become recluse, under-nourished and unhappy. His family feared for his well-being and luckily he accepted their offer of assistance from Meals on Wheels. His daughter was relieved to know that he was receiving not only a nutritious meal per day but more importantly a much-needed social visit from the wonderful delivery volunteers. As fate would have it, it was those same volunteers who one day recognized a problem with the gentleman’s health. His daughter was immediately notified and her father was rushed to the hospital. Doctors informed her that had he not been brought in when he was, he would have died within hours. Instead, thanks to the care he received, his family were all able to visit his bedside before he passed ten days later. Thanks to this man’s community he did not die scared and alone but rather with dignity, surrounded by a reunited family. Together we can provide positive change in our community; together your dollars can help local people in our community; together we can impact our community significantly. Together we are possibility.

OUR community will come together November 26th at the NAV Centre for the United Way/Centraide of SD&G Holiday Wine and Gourmet Tastings. Our signature event will launch the holiday season with an evening of fine wine, gourmet food, live entertainment and so much more. If the popularity of this event in past years is any indication, this year’s event is sure to sell out. Tickets are $90 and are available at Scotiabank and the United Way Centraide office (405 Fourth St W). We are extremely thankful for the continued support of our tireless volunteers, generous business sponsors, steadfast partners and our many loyal guests… all of whom we consider community heroes! Parents applaud GDHS students for taking a stand Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario - Students at Glengarry District High School (GDHS) walked out of their classes on Tuesday morning to protest the Upper Canada School Board’s (UCDSB) proposal to close their school as a part of their Pupil Accommodation Review. Pending funding from the provincial government, GDHS could be closed and its students sent to Vankleek Hill C.I. and Tagwi Secondary School. The UCDSB expressed their disappointment at the protest and warned that the students put themselves at risk by leaving their classes. The Board also reminded the public that students can express themselves through their web survey on the Building a Future Pupil Accommodation Review. “We are both concerned and disappointed that GDHS students who organized today’s event disregarded requests by the school’s administration to use other opportunities to share their concerns about the pending accommodation review

process,” read a statement from the UCDSB signed by Superintendent Tim Mills. “In no manner can we accept others advocating that students – some as young as 12 years of age – are properly cared for by walking out of their school rather than being in class. Our staff will continue to bring to the attention of our students the appropriate channels available to express their views, so that we can maintain a balance between the interests of our students and our obligation to safely operate the school and supervise pupils.” Parents however, feel that the students have been left with little meaningful recourse other than public protest. “We understand that the Board is concerned for student safety, however the students at GDHS felt that they needed to publicly support their school, which is not something that can be accomplished by filling out the Board’s survey,” said Chris Diraddo, who is on the GDHS Steering Committee and has a student at the school. Diraddo also is a member of the Glengarry SOS group that is a collaboration of members of the Glengarry public who are against the proposed school closures.

Protest at GDHS over proposed school closures on Tuesday, October 25 (Photo courtesy of the Glengarry SOS Facebook page).

Diraddo was not alone however. On Tuesday afternoon, the UCDSB posted their statement against the walkout on their Facebook page however, at that time most parents commenting on their statement saw the protest in a positive light in one way or another. “I can relate to the safety issue factor of the students, but just maybe if the board is so concerned about the issue at hand, maybe they can understand where the students objective was

and that being actions speak louder than words,” commented one Kim Parker. “I don’t condone actions which put students at risk. But I actually get a little excited when I see students acting as critical thinkers, taking on causes that are important to them and making their voices heard,” wrote one George Cooke. “I hope they also participate in this dialogue using the structured avenues offered by the board,” he added.

Change is Sparked at Community Living Campaign launch

news

Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The bandshell at Lamoureux Park was alight with sparklers and smiles despite a frigid drop in temperature on Tuesday night as people came together to incite change and promote inclusion. Community Living Ontario held a provincewide launch of its Spark Change initiative on October 25 and all three area branches came together to celebrate the kick it off. “We thought it would be great for Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry to come together and hold this launch here in Cornwall” explained Councillor Maurice Dupelle, who is a Community Living Glengarry board member. Community Living is a non-profit agency that supports people with intellectual disabilities, providing residential services, as well as employment support and home-share programs. “These are people who are doing great things and helping people with intellectual disabilities and they will have a chance to be recognized” said Dupelle. “Each agency will also be able to pay tribute to the Sparks within their own community”. After invigorating speeches from Community Living Executive Directors Debbie Boardman (Dundas), Danielle Duranceau (Glengarry), and Michelle Alguire (Stormont), members of the

Duranceau explained “This program is very important because it brings awareness to the community and celebrates the existing Sparks that are already identified and also helps to find new champions for inclusion”. “Every day we work at bringing down barriers and advocating for people to make sure they’re part of an inclusive community” added Dupelle. Séan McCann comes to Aultsville Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Séan McCann will be returning to Cornwall on Nov. 25 for an intimate, fun and heartfelt show at Aultsville Theatre. McCann, formerly of East-Coast folk band Great Big Sea, says that the music he is creating now feels more real to him than anything he has ever done. “We are so happy to have Séan back with us,” said Janet Martel, General Manager of Aultsville Theatre. “Cornwall audiences thoroughly enjoy his music and people get to experience Séan in a way that is missed when listening to him on the radio or on CD. He’s incredibly engaging and entertaining.” McCann said that so far, the tour has been wonderful. “It has been a great big tour,” he said. “We’re finding small halls and theatres and we’re melt-

ing hearts wherever we go.” McCann said that this tour has allowed him to work through some personal demons and create some beautiful music. “I allow for the darkness, I’ve allowed for my past and I’ve overcome it,” he said. McCann had struggled with alcoholism, but will be celebrating five-years sober this Nov. 9. He says that his show does tug at the heartstrings at points, but that it has its joyful moments as well. He has really appreciated how involved the crowd gets in his shows and how they sing a long, which is why he says he has chosen very intimate venues for his tour. “We are losing so many people to social media and the artificial light on those little screens,” he said. “Turn off your screens, get off Facebook and come out to the show. Come out I’ll grab you by the heart and it will hurt a little, but you’ll sing.” McCann has been to Cornwall on previous occasions and was at Musicfest at the Nav

Centre this summer. He said he really admires the geography of Cornwall and was impressed by its strong bilingualism. “I love the river, it reminds me of home,” he said. “I could see myself spending more time in Cornwall.” Séan McCann will be performing at Aultsville Theatre on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $26.50 (plus applicable surcharges) and can be purchased in person at the Cornwall Civic Complex box office or by calling (613) 938-9400. The evening of Nov. 25 marks the beginning of Aultsville Theatre’s 2016-2017 season of its Seat Sponsorship program. “The Seat Sponsorship program is a fundamental campaign that goes towards the refurbishment of our theatre,” said Felicity Svenson, President and Chair of Aultsville Theatre. Empty Bowls: New fundraiser for Agapè Centre Agapè is bringing the popular Empty Bowls fundraiser to Cornwall for the first time on Sunday November 13. Event-goers get to choose a unique handcrafted bowl, fill it with gourmet soup by local chefs paired with a fresh bun and apple crisp for dessert. After sitting and eating the meal with friends, each guest takes home their one-of-akind bowl, all for a $30 ticket. “This fundraiser brings people together to share in a hearty meal, so it dovetails nicely with our mission,” said Johanne Gauthier, Operations

Manager at the Agapè Centre. Ann Marlin, local potter of over 40 years, and founder of Marlin Orchards, volunteered to gather 100 bowl donations from local and area artisans, each piece valued at $25-$40 each. “Empty Bowls is a project that is quite familiar to potters. They are very earthy people and close to nature using natural resources to make a bowl, which symbolizes the importance of the work of the Agapè Centre to keep the bowls filled,” said Marlin. “The response of the potters in my recent show was tremendous! They were

all so enthusiastic and generous.” Gourmet soups will be prepared and generously donated by local chefs Tony Lakroix of Love, Love Food, and Luc McCabe of NAV Centre, along with the Agapè Centre’s chef, Ludwik Piotrowski. The event takes place Sunday November 13 upstairs at the Agapè Centre, with three sittings: 11am, 12pm and 1pm. There will also be a silent auction. There are only 90 tickets available, and they can be purchased at Scotiabank (690 Brookdale

Ave., Cornwall). The bank has partnered with the food bank, and will be matching ticket sales, turning every ticket sale into a $60 donation to the charity. Proceeds from the event will help the local food bank continue to serve the more than 500 families a month, and the soup kitchen to provide more than 100 nutritious meals 6 days a week. SD&G Organizations team up to Shine the Light on women’s abuse Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - November is Women’s Abuse Prevention Month and the Community Action Network Against Abuse has teamed up with Cornwall Lighting and Home Decor in their

new Shine the Light campaign. The Community Action Network Against Abuse is made up of five like minded organizations from SD&G and Akwesasne. The network is composed of Victim Services of SD&G and Akwesasne, Baldwin House, Naomi’s

Family Resource Centre, Interlude House and Sexual Assault Support Services for Women. The Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign was begun by the London Abused Women’s Centre in 2010 and is participated in by countries worldwide. The campaign tries to raise awareness about violence against women by encouraging individuals, schools and businesses to decorate themselves and their homes, buildings and stores in purple. The Community Action Network Against Abuse says that the colour purple was chosen for a very specific reason.

“Purple is the colour of survival honour and courage,” reads a statement from the Network. “The colour of bruises, purple has been transformed to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse.” Purple lightbulbs in support of the Shine the light campaign can be bought from Leo Sabourin at Cornwall Lighting and Home Decor for a donation of $10. Additionally, there will be a Shine the Light campaign launch party on Nov. 3 at Schnitzels European Flavours. RSVP for the launch party by calling 613-937-0340.

Ingredients

Tony Lacroix Harissa is a spicy and aromatic chile (often smoked) spice blend or paste that’s a widely used staple in North African and Middle Eastern cooking. Other key ingredients include; garlic, olive oil and other spices, like cumin, coriander, caraway and mint. Tomatoes and rose petals are also common ingredients. Even if you’re a “make it extra spicy” kind of person, harissa packs quite a punch… a little goes a long way.

OPINION

Political slugfests When it comes to Cornwall mayoral election rivalries it is pretty hard to find one as hotly, and bitterly, contested as the slugfests between Nick Kaneb and Dr. Elzear Emard. It was electioneering’s version of hand-tohand combat. Thanks to two-year terms, they battled for the mayoral title five times between 1958 and 1966. They both lost to incumbent L.G. “Archie” Lavigne in 1958. Lavigne, an alderman, had replaced Emile Menard who died within months of defeating long-serving mayor Aaron Horovitz. Kaneb came back to defeat Lavigne and Emard in 1960. Kaneb won again in 1962, beating his old nemesis Emard. Finally, in 1964, after four tries, Emard beat his familiar foe. This time he had a major ally, CJSS Radio, which he had purchased. Some claimed that he purchased the station as a valuable campaign tool. A case could be made that the station’s coverage of the election campaign was slanted in favour of the owner/mayoral candidate. A talented commentator hired by the station dished a steady diet of favourable Emard commentaries, while firing scorching salvos at the Kaneb administration. However, Emard’s term was limited to two years when Kaneb overcame the station’s bias and reclaimed the office in 1966. It was their last mayoral battle. But it could be said that despite the win on election night, Kaneb came up short. Emard was about 5-foot-6 standing on his toes. Kaneb was a towering 6-foot-3. When Kaneb arrived for work on his first day back in office, he discovered he couldn’t tuck his knees under the desk. It was too low. That was because about six inches had been sawed off the legs of the desk. Kaneb was convinced it was the doc’s way of having the last laugh. Kaneb would hold office until December 1971 when a young businessman named Ed Lumley and a ragtag, inexperienced campaign team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in

Cornwall mayoral history. It was the last election under the six-ward system. Voters put a stamp of approval on elections at large. Days into the election battle, the young mayoral challenger got a lesson in Old East Cornwall Politics 101. Lumley got a frantic call from an east-end resident. A member of his campaign team had just left her home after trying to convince the widow to put a Lumley campaign sign on her front yard. When she said no, it was suggested she might not receive her next welfare cheque. A very unhappy Lumley called in the campaign worker and read him the riot act. The worker’s logic, “Hey, that’s politics in the east end.” Lumley became mayor. The widow never missed a cheque. *************** A budget chill is being felt in Sault Ste. Marie where city council has voted to freeze the salaries of 127 non-union employees. It will save the municipality $227,395 in 2017. Underlining the economic challenges the city is facing, Mayor Christian Provenzano said, “I don’t think city hall can be insulated from the challenges that are in the community.” “If our community isn’t growing, our municipal bureaucracy shouldn’t be growing.” In Timmins, city council is looking at a possible 2% cut in all departments. However, Mayor Steve Black said it could be a tough act given collective bargaining agreements that will increase costs in 2017 and the wish list submitted by councillors. *************** In Belleville, where the city is pushing pedal to metal with multiple major capital projects, the debt has climbed to $102.3 million with another $60 million expected to be added in 2017. It will cost Belleville taxpayers $9.1 million to service the 2017 debt. That is projected to reach $9.9 million in 2019. The city is spending $20 million on upgrades to the Yardmen Arena to accommodate its recently acquired American Hockey League team owned and operated by the Ottawa Senators. The city is expected to start work on

a $20-million police headquarters in 2017. *************** Norfolk County (Southern Ontario) council members have voted themselves a $5,000 pay increase for 2017. It increases their annual stipend to $30,755 (one-third tax free). They have been receiving regular annual cost of living increases but felt it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Joneses. Next door in Haldimand County, councillors are paid $38,579. Norfolk councillors dragged out that worn-out, ridiculous defence that the higher pay scale is needed to attract “better candidates” along with the boring lament about not receiving proper compensation for all the hard work they do. That kind of nonsense usually breaks about three strings on the taxpayers’ violin. TRIVIA A number of family owned dairies once delivered milk six mornings a week to Cornwall and area residents. One of the dairies was in the east end and was owned and operated by the Deschamps family. What was the name of the dairy? TRIVIA ANSWER Msgr. Rudy Villeneuve was named Cornwall’s first citizen of the year in 1972. In 1996 he was named Lancaster’s citizen of the year. He died in 2011 at age 87. In Brockville, where the provincial force will be submitting the cost of replacing the municipal force, residents have been told that the basic cost does not include a municipal station that is open 24 hours a day. That’s an extra. SPORTS STUFF Doug Gilmour`s ``Offensive Player Award`` plaque presented to him by the Cornwall Royals Fan Club at the end of the 1982-83 season has turned up on ebay with an asking price of $267.38. Be interesting to find out how the plaque found its way to the current owner. .... Gilmour`s junior hockey card is going for $1.66. Others include Owen Nolan $26.73, John Slaney $4.35 and Jeremy Stevenson $1.34. A Royals’ lapel pin is listed at $13.36. ... Cornwall Aces’ memorabilia includes a sweater at $121.66, a Rene Corbet card for $1.66 and an unused game ticket (plenty of them) for $8.02. ... Local minor hockey numbers continue to drop. Some divisions struggle to put together one house league team. Little wonder. House league registration fees now top $500 per player. Couple of decades back it was about $50. AND FINALLY Watched a terrific interview (on CNN) with Vice-President Joe Biden. He just might be one of the best presidents the Excited States of America never had. Heads and shoulders above the choices on the Nov. 8 ballot.

OPINION

Dogs have a divine purpose Nick Wolochatiuk ~ Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com

A whole day without a dog is not a whole day. During our recent weeks of canoeing in the Adirondacks, thanks to three very special dogs I encountered, my days have been whole. The first was Max, the protector of a remote cottage beyond the far end of a 14-mile long lake. (That’s why it’s called ‘Long Lake’.) As we approached the shore, he barked loudly, bounding down the steep slope that overlooks the Raquette River. I was preparing to fend him off with my paddle. Only when he abruptly halted next to us did

I see his doggy grin and a tennis ball in his mouth. He dropped it into the water beside our canoe. He was greeting us with, “Hi! Want to play ‘Throw the Ball and I’ll Fetch it?” We did. Several days and 14 miles later we again met Max, this time at the town boat launch. As soon as he saw our canoe approach, he emerged from the water with a stick in his mouth. He invited me to play ‘Throw the Stick and I’ll Fetch it’. We did. The next dog of the day was a big shaggy white mutt gazing in our direction from an approaching pontoon boat. To my surprise, her owner carried her in his arms to a waiting truck. Can’t the dog walk? Only later, when we were invited to go on a boat ride with them, did I learn that she was an albino, deaf and nearly

A small triptych of the three dogs, MAX, ALBA, KEIRA (Nick Wolochatiuk). blind from birth. Despite those known limitations, she was adopted and lovingly cared for the last eight or so years. Then came Keira, a wily, playful border collie. She and owner Barbara Linsley were getting a real workout playing ‘Throw the Stick and I’ll Fetch it”. The dog was tireless. Barbara wrote a

beautifully-illustrated book ‘My Life In Dogs’; she kindly gave us a newly-published copy. As with Max, the combined hurling efforts of Juliet (my wife) and I were unable to satisfy Keira’s enthusiasm for her doggy job. The reason why God put dogs on earth was to introduce strangers to each other.

LETTER

Remembering War Amps this Remembrance Day to all men and women who have served in Canada’s military, and especially those who lost a limb or limbs in war. I was born with an amputation affecting both my arms, and have learned to overcome this challenge thanks to programs put in place by amputee veterans of The War Amps.

War amputee veterans that founded The War Amps changed the futures for all amputees. I consistently strive to push myself more and more because I know war amputee veterans never let their amputation stop them from achieving their goals of creating opportunity for amputees young and old.

On Remembrance Day, please take a moment to remember those who have and continue to serve. We commemorate their lives and share their stories so that their sacrifices will never be forgotten. Sincerely, Samuel Giberson, 23, Ottawa, Ontario

When losing is still a win Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media BONVILLE, Ontario - The Cornwall Township Lions Club surprised Cierra Lalonde by presenting her with a cheque for $500 on Sunday October 30th for her team’s competition in Washington D.C. The 15 year old St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School student is a member of the St. Joe’s Panthers ladies’ rugby team, as well as a student volunteer for their club. Lalonde explained in September, the St. Joe’s Panthers had competed in the Cornwall Lions Club Bed Race, hoping to win and put the prize money toward their trip. “Although we tried our hardest,” she said, “we didn’t win.” When asked about receiving the equivalent to the prize money anyway she said, “I was really surprised, Al (Jodin, President of the Cornwall Township Lions Club) has done a lot for me and my family.” With a team of 51 players on the roster and a

cost of approximately $320 per person, Lalonde knows the funds will benefit the team greatly. She said, “Girls who can’t pay for the trip, can now go because the trip will be less Andrew Maloney a member of the Cornwall Township Lions Club and a teacher at St. Joe’s, explained the partnership between the Lions Club and the girls’ rugby team started when he choose them to represent the Lions Club in the Bed Race. With Lalonde working as a volunteer and because he works with Francys Harrison, the team manager, he knew the Panthers needed help to fund their trip. Harrison says the fundraising is just getting started. There is a Christmas fundraiser involving St. Albert Cheese and a spaghetti dinner planned in February. Casey Leger, Panther’s coach said that with school board (The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario) approval the team hopes to go to Washington D.C. to compete the last week of March 2017.

Listed from the strongest to the weakest, they are: Chlorine bleach: Liquid sodium hypochlorite bleach, such as Clorox or Purex. It is a potent bleach and powerful oxidizer, useful in the laundry to whiten and remove spots from whites and colourfast fabrics. Color removers: Designed to prepare fabrics for re-dyeing, color removers can also be effective stain removers. Very useful in removing unwanted dyes from whites that have been washed with coloured items by mistake. RIT Color Remover is a common one, available at drug and grocery stores.

Prayers / thank you cards

Mona Lebano 1915-2016

The family of the late Mrs. Mona Lebano would like to thank the staff of Chartwell Lancaster Long Term Care Residence for their excellent care during mom’s final years. Words cannot express our gratitude for the wonderful care she received. Also, to Dr. Tom Forson, the volunteers of Chartwell and to Father Marc Piche. Thank you to Wilson Funeral Home, especially Denis Aube, for their professionalism and loving care, to Roy’s Florist, to the St. Columban’s CWL for their tribute at the funeral home and Honour Guard at the church, to Father Kevin Maloney for prayers at the funeral home, celebrating the mass and mom’s 101 years of life and for the graveside prayers. Thank you to the four altar servers and to the readers Doreen Lebano and Carolyn Cox, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 297 for their Honour Guard and to soloist Candy Provost. Special thank you to Piper Dwight Grant and to all of mom’s grandchildren who acted as pall bearers and honourary pall bearers and great- grandson Andrew Doyon who acted as pall bearer. Thank you to all who sent flowers, mass offerings, St. Columban’s Foundation offerings, other religious offerings, the out-of-town visitors, those who sent sympathy cards and who offered their condolences. Thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion who catered to the lunch after the funeral and to Fred and Marlene Smith who provided our family with a wonderful home-cooked meal. Mom contributed a lot of her time to volunteer work. The love and affection she had shown for others came back to us during this sad time in our lives. Vince, Don, Elizabeth and Louis 6994257

Cornwall Regional Airport receives support for expansion Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - With an eye on the future development of the Cornwall Regional Airport a check for $20, 000 was presented to the Township of South Glengarry on Friday Oct. 28. The Cornwall and Counties Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) held a press conference at the Cornwall Regional

Airport where they made the announcement. The support received will be put towards a business plan. During the press conference Guy Lauzon, MP Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, expressed enthusiasm for the project. He said he was excited to see the plan on how the airport would be expanded. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said, “This (business plan) was an initiated by the City of Cornwall and Township of South Glengarry to help guide the commission on how to move

forward, upon approval provided by the respective City and Township.” South Glengarry Mayor, Ian McLeod, explained why a business plan for the airport was needed when he said, “Before we make any changes, we wanted a third party review.” He also said, “Sometimes when you look at something for a long time, you don’t see all the opportunities.” There is a draft of the business plan, but O’Shaughnessy said, “It is still in raw format. It needs to be reviewed by the administration.”

news

Lesley Lang, Executive Director for the Cornwall & the Counties Community Futures Development Corporation, explained how the plan for expansion of the Cornwall Regional Airport, which was established in 1984, would benefit the area by promoting both small and medium sized businesses. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy summed up the sentiments of expanding the Cornwall Regional Airport when he said, “Growth brings growth.”

Members representing the Battle of Glengarry, War of 1812 Reenactment at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum was on hand last Friday to receive a cheque for $3, 000 from Scotiabank Alexandria. The cheque is for support of the 7th Annual War of 1812 event, which was held on September 24-25, 2016. The highlight of the weekend is the War of 1812 Education Day for area students and Scotiabank’s generous contribution is well received. Appearing in the picture from left-to-right are: Gerhard Mittman (Glengarry Light Infantry and 1812 committee member), Karen Davison-Wood (1812 committee member), Audrey Kennedy (Scotiabank), Cheryl Baron-Ingola (Scotiabank), Michelle Simard (Scotiabank), Renee Homiak (Interim curator, GPM) and Jim Mullin (1812 Event Chair).

Mrs Jones was proud of her pumpkin patch, so she was real disappointed when some of the the local kids were taking them to make Jack-o-Lanterns. One evening while Mrs Jones was soaking in the bath, the answer to the pumpkin thefts came to her. After supper she went out and put up a sign: ‘Beware, one of these pumpkins is coated with a special colourless rat poison!’ A day or two later when Mrs Jones checked out her pumpkin patch she was pleased to see that no more had been stolen. Then she saw a second sign next to hers which said: ‘NOW THERE ARE TWO!!’
