Tremendous turnout for Trunk Sale Alycia Douglass, Special to TC Media SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - Marlin Orchards was abuzz with artisanal exuberance this weekend, as folks flocked to shop in support of Maison Baldwin House. In its 7th year running, organizers Julie Hickman and Debbie Burns of We 3 Girls have it down to a science. “What we love to hear from our guests is that every year, we blow them away,” said Hickman. “We want to make sure that it’s a different show from year to year.” With that in mind, Hickman and Burns hand-select their vendors with quality being of the utmost importance. After being approached by We 3 Girls several years in a row to vend at the event, Ottawa-based Kendall Valerio of Sadie & June was finally able to set aside time to sell her handembroidered heart maps. “We’re always on vacation, but came back early this year so we could do the show,” said Valerio. “We’re constantly impressed with how much they’re able to raise for different charities, and were eager to get on board.” Having raised $85,000 for the MS Society

over the course of 5 years, We 3 Girls decided it was time to turn their attention to other organizations. “We went through a little bit of a process,” said Burns. “First, we asked people to submit their application, and had a panel review the applications, which were then narrowed it down to four. We met with the four groups, and voted. Baldwin House was the winning recipient for this year’s event, and we’re really happy to be working with them.” Debbie Fortier, who is the executive director at Maison Baldwin House, says that they were thrilled to learn that they had been chosen as this year’s recipients. “We were absolutely over-the-moon excited,” said Fortier. In addition to organizing a free hourly shuttle service out of Cornwall, Maison Baldwin House was also able to get Scotiabank on board, who agreed to match funds up to $5000. “One of our goals is to do more fundraising and become more visible within the community to be able to cover our operational costs,” said Fortier. “This event is going to help put us right where we need to be.” The event has grown a great deal since its humble beginnings in 2009. “It was an unbelievable event - people showed up in

droves and we realized we needed a bigger venue if we were to grow,” said Hickman. In its second year, Diane Lunan, owner of Marlin Orchards offered We 3 Girls space in the orchard greenhouse. “We had donated apple cider in their first year hosting the event and got chatting,” said Lunan. “It just came about that we had a greenhouse that has plants in the spring, and nothing in the fall, so it worked.” Allison Gibbs of Knot by Design has been

vending at the event for 4 years, previously attending as a guest. “Many of us have two jobs,” said Gibbs. “Everyone vending is an artisan, but they’re also perhaps teachers or nurses as well.” The event itself raises funds through ticket sales, raffles, and vendor sales, of which a percentage is donated to the cause. In short, by attending and purchasing products from the event, shoppers are helping to support Maison Baldwin House.

Hospice Cornwall shoots past telethon goal Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The fifth CogecoTV telethon for Hospice Cornwall was a resounding success, raising over $20, 000 more than the set goal of $145, 000. The final tally of the telethon was $167,000 once all the money was counted as some was still coming in after the telethon went off the air. “The telethon always has one lady from Nova Scotia who calls in after hours. She gave $500 and then another one called right after her with another $500,” said Cornwall Hospice’s Fundraising Co-ordinator Sandy Collette. In the first year of the telethon in 2009, Hospice Cornwall raised $45, 200, since that start the fundraiser has grown and as of 2015 Hospice Cornwall has received nearly $732, 000 from the event. Since its creation, Hospice Cornwall has provided care to 100, 000 residents, free of charge to

those with an OHIP card. Some of the guests lined up for this year’s telethon included Lionel Lauzon, who organized the Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Tournament for Hospice Cornwall. Other guests include Hospice Cornwall Board Chair Ruth Pollack, and charity organizers and other supporters of Hospice Cornwall. Cornwall, November 8, 2016 – The Cornwall Chamber’s Commerce Court building on Second Street has welcomed two new agencies. The Counties Community Futures Development Corporation and the Business Development Bank of Canada, have joined with Heart of the City at the downtown site in making it their centre of operations. The announcement was made jointly by CFDC Executive Director Lesley Lang and Chamber Executive Manager Lezlie Strasser. “We are pleased to join with BDC, the Chamber and Heart of the City in a downtown location,” states Lang. “Being co-located with like minded organizations promotes more partnership initiatives and makes accessing business funding and support simpler for our clients.” Executive Manager Strasser was also pleased that the CFDC and BDC has become part of its Commerce Court group. “Each of those organizations has a business focus, just like the Chamber of Commerce,” she notes. “Having this kind of business centre in downtown Cornwall is good for both our members and the business community as a whole.” The CFDC is funded through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (Fed Dev Ontario). It delivers a broad range of programs and services to support community economic development and small business growth. BDC is Canada’s business development bank, one dedicated exclusively to entrepreneurs. Its mandate is to help create and develop strong Canadian businesses through financing, advisory services and indirect financing, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. Heart of the City is a community improvement initiative created by the Chamber more than 15 years ago and has spearheaded close to $50 million in revitalization projects throughout Cornwall’s urban core. Established in 1890, the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce has been an advocate for the business community and the entire Cornwall region for over 125 years.

guests…all of whom we consider community heroes! By supporting this year’s $700,000 community campaign, you too can be a hero to someone like Beth who benefits from a United Way/ Centraide supported program: “Losing one’s hearing is scary and isolating as there are no solutions that restore normal hearing. Canadian Hearing Society helped me - for the first time, I met others with a hearing loss and we could discuss the challenges we all face. We learned coping strategies, and the types of devices and other supports available. I no longer felt alone”. Beth received technical devices to help

manage the new challenges she faced: an amplified phone which enabled her to speak to clients, a pillow shaker alarm clock as she is unable to hear wake-up calls or normal alarms, an FM microphone meant she could continue to conduct interviews, provide facilitation and hear at team meetings for her work. She sums up the impact on her life like this, “Today I am a volunteer for CHS because I want to give back to the organization that has done so much for me”. Together we can provide positive change in our community; together your dollars can help local people in our community; together we can impact our community significantly. Together we are possibility.

M o re ove r, “The government’s current approach forces school boards into a pattern of over-crowding boards such as the UCDSB have to fulfil their and closures, which is totally unacceptable as it mandate to provide public education to all studoesn’t just encourage, it imposes reckless dents, regardless of the cost – the only Board

with an obligation to do so. The Ministry of Education must stop offloading the Government’s mismanagement and waste on our children. They should instead take charge by engaging all rural school boards, school communities and municipalities in the development of a sustainable rural education strategy. While this happens, any accommodation reviews being conducted under today’s flawed guidelines must be put on hold”. A petition to save rural schools in Eastern Ontario is available at www.jimmcdonellmpp. ca/petitions and at the constituency office at 120 Second St West, Cornwall, ON K6J 1G5.

The motion reads as follows: That, in the opinion of this House, the Government should place a moratorium on rural school closures and suspend Pupil Accommodation Reviews until it has developed a long term plan for rural education by consulting with all local rural school boards, school communities, students, and municipalities and that it considers the value of local education, ensures students receive a quality education that includes access to important extra-curricular activities and after school employment, and that it establishes a stable, sustainable funding formula for rural areas.

School closures could see housing prices drop Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Upper Canada School Board (UCDSB) has proposed to close 12 schools categorized as Category 1 in their Peer Accommodation Review. If the plan is passed by the school board in March, then those 12 schools would close on June 30, 2017. Some of the schools proposed to be closed under the plan include Char-Lan District High School, S.J. MacLeod and Longue Sault Public School. Rothwell-Osnabruck will be turned into a K-6 school under the plan with all students Grade 7 and above being sent to CCVS.

Students currently at Char-Lan will be bused to Cornwall to attend CCVS and St. Lawrence Secondary School. For students who already live near the school in Williamstown, and further East, this will significantly increase their time riding on the bus to their new school. Not only will this greater distance from a good school affect travel time for those students living around Williamstown, but it will also affect the property values of not just their parent’s homes, but of all homes in the area. According to a study conducted by the realty firm TheRedPin from January 2014 to March 2015 the average price of a townhouse in the Greater Toronto Area, that was close to a good

school, was 34 percent higher than townhouses located in other parts of the city. While the housing market in Cornwall and SD&G is not as hot as the Toronto market, the correlation between good schools and housing prices could translate. “One of the top priorities we see is proximity to a school and ease of transport,” said Andrew Ouellette a local Broker/ Manager with Royal LePage. “Typically, buyers pay more for houses close to schools they want to send their children to.” The closure of schools like Longue Sault Public and Char-Lan could affect more than just students and parents, but entire communities.

School closures could affect the price of your home if you’re trying to sell.

City plans for better service for seniors CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is taking steps to make Cornwall a more senior friendly community. This was one priority identified by City Council in its Strategic Plan which was updated earlier this year. Building on this, over 700 Cornwall seniors were consulted to determine what the City could do to meet this objective. Through the consultation process, suggestions for a Senior Friendly Implementation Plan were formed. A common concern of Cornwall seniors was a need for the consolidation of information about opportunities, programs and services specific to seniors. To address this concern, and as part of a new grant from the Provincial Government, Jordan Ann Kevan de Haan has been hired as Cornwall’s Senior Friendly Community Liaison Officer. The role of Mrs. Kevan de Haan is to collect

and communicate information for seniors within the City of Cornwall and to advance Cornwall’s Senior Friendly Implementation Plan by encouraging specific, practical recommendations that will ensure Cornwall remains a safe, accessible and enjoyable city for everyone. Mrs. Kevan de Haan is excited about her new position. “Cornwall is my home, and I love that this job will help me connect seniors with the many opportunities and services we already have within our community,” she said. “I am also looking forward to acting on the advice of Cornwall’s seniors and assisting in making our city even more age-friendly.” Mrs. Kevan de Haan’s first tasks will be to initiate a new section of the City of Cornwall’s website called the Senior Friendly Community Initiative and to produce a newsletter specific to

seniors. Residents can access the new website section by visiting www.Cornwall.ca/Seniors. Materials and information relevant to seniors will be added on an ongoing basis in the coming months. Local community partners with information that may be relevant to seniors are encouraged to contact Mrs. Kevan de Haan via email at

Jdehaan@cornwall.ca. In addition to the hiring of Mrs. Kevan de Haan, a Senior and Dementia Friendly Community Implementation Committee has formed. This committee, made up of community members and City staff, will meet on an ongoing basis to help advance the Senior Friendly Community Implementation Plan.

* Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing. ** An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior measures (Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-in-noise situations applying advanced features such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield.

Newspapers rule of thumb was one newsroom staffer for every 1,000 paid circulation. The current paid circulation is believed to be around 6,000. The next move could be to eliminate the Monday print edition, or go to three days a week, which is what some large U.S. metro dailies have done. The across-the - chain job cutting announcement was followed by a news release that Postmedia president and CEO Paul Godfrey had been given a contract extension, which no doubt included a pay raise. Be interesting what Godfrey could have received from the company if it actually made money instead of drowning in a sea of red ink under his watch. Couple of weeks back one of the country’s best newspaper columnists, Christie Blatchford, penned a piece on hockey legend Bobby Hull - “Flawed Hull did wonders for hockey”. Blatchford noted that a Winnipeg writer recently brought attention to Hull’s off-ice problems that included allegations of domestic abuse. The column acknowledged that Hull had a dark side, usually connected to overconsumption of alcohol, but he is a charmer and has been a tremendous hockey ambassador. I saw Hull’s charm at its best after his business partner invited me to join them for dinner at a restaurant just outside Potsdam in March, 1988. A peewee hockey tournament was being played in Potsdam and the restaurant was filled with players and their parents. We had a table in a back room but several times during the meal the waiter arrived with an autograph request. Hull didn’t hesitate. He was enjoying it. Finally, the waiter brought a stick to be signed. Hull told him to go back and get the youngster. “So, this is your stick,” said Hull. “Know what, if I had had a curve like this, I might have made something of myself.” Near the end of the meal, somebody from Cornwall came to Hull and asked for a favour. He knew Hull was staying overnight in Cornwall and asked if he could visit a chap named Emile Fournier who was terminally ill with cancer. Fournier was a huge Bobby Hull fan. He also had one of the biggest hockey card collections in the country. A collection that at the time was worth at least $30,000. (A Toronto hockey card collector bought it for the bargain price of $18,000). Hull told his partner to get the address. “We’ll be there in the morning. Around 9 o’clock,” said Hull. “Don’t tell him we are

coming.” I figured there was no way Hull, who had polished off most of a bottle of J and B whisky, would show up. Years later I remembered to ask my friend, who lived in Toronto, if Hull had visited the dying man. “Yup. Sure did,” he said. My other up-close exposure to the Hull charm was in Toronto Union Station, back when the Golden Jet was playing for the Blackhawks. The Hawks had just beaten Toronto 1-0 and the players were boarding the train for Chicago around midnight, which is the way teams travelled in the six-team era. An elderly women, probably in her eighties, came up to Hull and ask if he would take time to say hello to her husband who was sitting on a bench. He was too frail to make the long walk to where Hull was busy with a bevy of autograph hounds. Without hesitation he walked over to the gent, sat down beside the man and put his arm around him. The man’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. Several minutes later somebody from the Hawks yelled at Hull, “Billy (coach Reay) says to move it, or else...” Hull, in no rush, got up, shook the gent’s hand and said, “Sure was nice meeting you.” Vintage Hull. *************** The Standard-Freeholder staff will be cut by at least one, probably two, in the latest round of Postmedia reductions that go into effect this month. One of those cuts could be in the newsroom which is down to three editors, two general assignment reporters and a sports writer. Putting out a six-days-aweek newspaper along with the occasional specials with a five person newsroom would be an immense, if not impossible challenge. Back in the early 1990s, the S-F had a newsroom staff of 20. Daily circulation was hugging the 20,000 mark. The Thomson

Excellent choice for United Nation’s new Secretary General Sultan Jessa United Nation’s new Secretary Antonio Guterres of Portugal will face colossal challenges when he replaces Ban Ki-moon of South Korea early next year. Many expected the job to go to a woman. Among more than a dozen contenders for the top job of the world body were seven women. Guterres is most likely to select a woman as deputy secretary general. He is on record saying “gender parity” is crucial at the United Nations. Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal,

is an excellent choice. His immediate tasks on assuming the leadership of the 193-member United Nations general assembly is to find solutions to ease growing tensions between America and Russia, bring an end to many regional wars, restoring peace in Syria, the climate change and a horde of other world problems. The new UN secretary general has experience, endless energy and determination and also diplomatic finesse to tackle many of the problems, among them the refugee crisis. Guterres served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. He also served as prime minister of Portugal

from 1995 to 2002. There is no doubt he has experience in dealing with world problems. He effectively dealt with the displacement of millions fleeing wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere by providing food and shelter and finding them refuge in other countries. The refugee problem continues to mushroom and is almost out of control now with more conflicts around the globe. Guterres has shown determination and courage in pressuring western nations to accept more refugees by hammering out agreements in difficult circumstances. Many experts believe Guterres could change

directions the world body has taken so far. The UN needs a new direction and Guterres maybe the person to do the job. Guterres was born in Lisbon in 1949 and studied engineering and physics and later joined politics. The new UN boss is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. He will continue to get the world’s richest nations to do more for those fleeing conflict and disaster around the globe. Guterres will try to restore United Nations lost credibility and take the decision making body in a different direction with his vision and versatility.

South Glengarry Landowners up in arms Our Mayor and Councillors plus our General Manager of Infrastructure have never walked this Unopened Road Allowance to see what’s going to be destroyed. They made their decision in a room. The Township hired a qualified Ontario Land Surveyor (as they say). He should have known that you need a legal Plan of Survey done, not a fly-by-night one. What he did is not legal. Also, the Township Surveyor stated to a landowner that there is a gray area and there should be a legal Plan of Survey done. This is the

Township’s own land surveyor stating this himself! The Township should step back and reconsider their decision before an accident happens and the Township will be liable (what’s wrong with using Paragon Road?). We do not need another disaster like what happened last year in North Glengarry at Dan Lanken’s property on First of Kenyon. They trespassed on his property and destroyed his trees. If the Township still considers to go forward with this, they need to do a legal Plan of Survey

if they do not then it shows the Township is corrupt by not following legal procedures. They tell people one thing and they do the opposite. For instance, our General Manager of Infrastructure stated there would be a survey done. He’s playing on words. When a person hears the word survey, they take into consideration in means a legal Plan of Survey, not something else. If the individual has to follow the law, so should the Township. Landowners are up in arms with South Glengarry Township. For allowing the Glendalers Sports Club to re-open an Unopened Road Allowance off of County Road 27 to Paragon Road which should be classified as wet lands and wildlife area, not an ATV trail. On Oct. 27 2016 the Glendalers started clearing the Road Allowance and were stopped by land owners and the O.P.P. because the Glendalers did not have proper documentation.

Get your vehicle winter ready

16 - Thursday, November 10, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

Tim Houle Auto Talk

The Tires: Winter isn’t a good time to have bald tires. If they’re completely worn out or don’t have a lot of tread left, it’s time to replace them. If they look good, have your tires rotated to extend their life. If you have to replace your tires, replace all four because your tires are only as good as the worst one. Coolant/Antifreeze: We don’t put a lot of thought in to that odd smelling green stuff that cools our engines but over time it gets dirty and inefficient eventually damaging critical systems. Ideally, your radiator should be flushed and refilled with fresh coolant once per year but most of us don’t do that. How long has it been since you’ve flushed your radiator? You might want to get that done with your next oil change. Windshield Wipers: If they aren’t doing a good job with rain, they’re definitely not going to do well with

sleet, snow, salt, and dirt. An all-purpose wiper will normally do the job but for those living in regions with an extra helping of winter, buy a higher priced winter wiper. Also don’t forget your washer fluid. The cheap, summer mixture will freeze just when you need it most so buy the higher quality washer fluid. Even better, purchase the winter mix that is guaranteed not to freeze.

confidence in what I’m writing,” says Below. “I wanted to be municipal liaison because I wanted to give that feeling to other people, the feeling of community, because writing is such a solitary activity. I like to be able to bring people together and know that you’re not alone in this and that you get the proper encouragement, which is something that a lot of writers need sometimes.” The site also includes many writing tools such as word-count helpers and pep talks from established authors. The main challenge for many would-be authors is to turn off their inner-editor, focusing more on achieving the high word count first rather than having a completely polished manuscript. Malboeuf, who has won the event six times, says participants need to work solely on writing, not worrying about how certain aspects of the book play out until the task is completed. “If you have a story in mind that you’ve never written, it’s a good time to try it,” says Malboeuf. She encourages writers to set personal milestones regardless of whether they reach the set word count. “If you only wrote 20,000 words last year go for 21,000. If you can’t get the 50,000 just do your best, do what you can. You might not get the winner title but you’ve accomplished a goal and it’s satisfying (…) I like to look at it as smaller goals, aim for a smaller amount, once you hit that goal, increase it,” says Malboeuf.

“We’re happy to celebrate smaller goals,” adds Below, “If you walk up to us and say your goal is 10,000, we’ll celebrate with you!” For those who reach the goal of 50,000 words, not only do they have their novel-length work, but NaNoWriMo offers a host of prizes through their sponsors, such as creating free physical copies of completed books or discounts on writing software. Local writers who are eager to participate but may be worried about finishing a whole novel are still encouraged to take part in the event. “Come out, write with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays, have fun. Connect with people who do the same thing that you do, and who knows, maybe you can get 50,000 words, maybe you’ll just end up getting halfway through your book and you didn’t think you could,” says Below. Though it is the first year working as co-municipal liaisons for the pair, Malboeuf and Below aim to be on hand to give advice and urge participants to keep plugging away at their work throughout the entire month. “Hopefully we can encourage people along the way to not give up and try it!” says Malboeuf. CORNWALL, Ontario - This month sparks the beginning of quite the undertaking for many dedicated writers. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an international event that takes place in November, wherein writers across the globe attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. It was created in 1999, and has grown to the point where in 2015, there were over 400,000 participants. Around 25 novelists from the SD&G area have already committed to participate in NaNoWriMo.

Lindsay Below and Kim Malboeuf are co-municipal liaisons for the SD&G region, which was originally established in Cornwall in 2010, and then expanded to incorporate a wider area. “For a lot of people they find 50,000 words to be daunting, but when you break it down, it’s 1667 words per day,” says Below. “Depending on how fast you write that can be an hour, it could be two hours, three hours…it does take time obviously, you’re going to be pledging a big chunk of your November to writing this novel.” The local group meets at the Cornwall Public Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursdays at The Grind from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is also a marathon writing day scheduled at the Cornwall library on Saturday, November 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For those located in Chesterville, write-ins are held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chesterville Branch library. Those not able to attend write-ins in person can participate via virtual write-ins held on the NaNoWriMo chat rooms. While all ages are welcome to participate, it is generally aimed at adults, as there is a Young Writers program offered through the NaNoWriMo site that works with teachers to bring in NaNoWriMo as part of the curriculum, and also lowers the chosen word goal because of the students’ age level. Below started participating in the event in 2008, going on to publish many of her completed NaNoWriMo work as official books. She credits the NaNoWriMo forums as being a great source for feedback and inspiration. “It’s really a community, which helped me gain

The Township of South Glengarry and the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) held a joint press conference on Saturday, November 5th to unveil four new interpretive signs which will be installed at various locations on the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at the Summerstown Forest. The unveiling took place at the beginning of the annual Clean-Up Day organized by FOTST to remove trash and complete maintenance work on the trails in preparation for the upcoming winter season. The production of these signs was made possible through a grant obtained from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TDFEF). Leigh MacDonald, Branch Manager of the TD Bank on 9th Street in Cornwall, was in attendance representing the TDFEF. She explained that funds collected from employee and client donations, and matched by TD Bank, are granted to local organizations in support of environmental projects. While the TDFEF is a national charity, locally raised funds remain in the region. The interpretive signs were developed by the FOTST to inform trail users about the birds, trees and wetlands of Summerstown Forest, specifically targeting the thousands of grade school students who visit the trails every winter on school outings. The signs also include a message about conservation. “The Township of South Glengarry is pleased to partner with the Friends of the Summerstown Trails and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation on this initiative,” stated Mayor Ian McLeod, “The trails are enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the region and these signs will certainly enhance the experience of trail users.” “This initiative was achieved by a coming together of the private sector, local government and the Friends of the Summerstown Trails, but the most important thing is the message on the panels,” added FOTST President Paul Couture. “I hope the information contributes in some way to raise awareness of the importance of the natural world in our local community.”

The archives at ST John's Presbyterian Church on Second St. E. in Cornwall holds a poster displayed during WWII. It lists the names of all 147 members of the congregation that who had volunteered for active service with Canada's fighting forces plus one in the USA. Designed by A.J. Casson of the Group of Seven, printed in colour, inscribed by hand, the poster is 37" high by 23"wide. No doubt it was a weekly reminder to the congregation of all those absent from the Sunday service. Inscribed–For King and Country, it includes the Canadian coat of arms and those of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Of interest, in the left lower corner is US President Franklin Roosevelt, with his black hat and umbrella on his arm. Sadly, the Canadian PM, King and France’s deGaulle are just out of view. My father, Sergeant, Francis Thomas Lariviere from the RCR’s was the lead bugler. He can be seen in the front row of buglers sporting a moustache, directly behind one of soldiers with a rifle. By the way, I still have the bugle that he used in that ceremony!

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Fourth Annual Crafting a Cure Brews up $25, 000 SHANNON FERGUSON, SPECIAL TO TC MEDIA CORNWALL, Ontario – Close to 300 people tickled their taste buds with craft beer from across Ontario on Friday, November 4 as twelve different breweries and a cidery set up shop at the Agora Centre to craft a cure for Type 1 diabetes. In its fourth year, Cure raised over $25,000 for JDRF and the beer tasting fundraiser continues to bring attention and public support to Type 1 diabetes. Commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes the disease affects children well into adulthood. Organizers Jeff and Cherie Lalonde have two children with Type 1 diabetes and decided four years ago that they wanted to get involved with the cause. “We want to help fight the good fight” said Jeff “It’s really doubled in size since we started this and we couldn’t be happier”. A unique fundraising addition has been created this year with Sawdust City Brewing from Gravenhurst, Ontario coming on board. Their

1105 beer now includes the Crafting a Cure logo and they will be donating one dollar from every sale during the month of November to the cause. Sawdust City brewmaster Sam Corbeil has an eight-year-old daughter with Type 1 diabetes and was eager to get involved. “We wanted to do something that added a splash, something big that allowed us to donate as much money as we possibly could to the cause” said Corbeil. He is impressed to see so much support adding “It’s fantastic, they’ve really done such a great job getting breweries from all across the province to be here and it’s nice to see so many people out. Beer can do good things too”. Local brewery Rurban was on-site for the second year but owner AJ Roraback has been involved since the inception of the fundraiser. “It’s a local cause started by local people and Sawdust City Brewing’s James Edgar and Sam Corbeil with the organizers of Crafting is very personal to a lot of people here. It’s abso- a Cure, Cherie and Jeff Lalonde. (Shannon Ferguson/Seaway News). lutely amazing that we could pull the whole area together and raise so much money”. throughout the night. The fundraiser also place throughout the year leading up to Beer aficionados were able to sample an included a massive silent auction as well as a live Crafting a Cure. Said Jeff “We’re just so happy array of beer and cider while listening to the auction and door prizes. that all this money keeps coming in and we musical stylings of Reverb Syndicate An assortment of local JDRF fundraisers took know it is making a difference”.

Born in Calgary, developed in Ontario, the Stampeders return to Aultsville Theatre NICK SEEBRUCH

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Stampeders are no strangers to Cornwall and many will be familiar with their classic rock sound. Last playing in Aulstville Theatre four years ago, guitarist and vocalist Rich Dodson says that he best remembers playing with the Trogs in Cornwall in 1974. The band first formed in Calgary in 1964, but soon made their way East, playing gigs along the way.

“We Partridge Familied ourselves across the country,” said Dodson. “We had to get to Toronto because that’s where the action was.” In Toronto, the modern band line-up of Ronnie King, Rich Dodson and Kim Berly formed. Since then, the Stampeders have kept up a high work rate and have played with some of the biggest acts of the past 40 years. Dodson estimates that throughout the 70s, the band played about 298 dates a year and shared the stage with such names as The Beach Boys, Joe Cocker, Sunny & Sher and KISS. Dodson contributes they staying power to

their visits to small venues. “All the time after shows I have people come up to me saying “You came and played at my high school,”” Dodson said. Dodson said that he and the band are looking forward to returning to Cornwall. “We’re going to do some classics and we have some new stuff and we look forward to hanging out with everyone,” he said. Rich Dodson, Kim Berly and Ronnie King of the Stampeders.

Whitening Agents, also known as fluorescent brighteners, give laundry an added blue glow in sunlight and fluorescent light, making garments appear brighter than they otherwise would. Enzymes help break down complex soils so they can be more easily removed. All-Fabric Bleach is an addition to some detergent powders.

You should install the shelves in a vertical direction rather than horizontal direction as there is much more space available in the upward direction. Marvel comic artist makes stop in Fantasy Realm Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s hub for all things fandom, Fantasy Realm, was buzzing on Saturday, Nov. 5 with the return of famed comic book illustrator, and movie man, Geof Isherwood. Fans familiar with his work had the opportunity to meet him earlier this year at CAPE, and again today as he hung out at the comic book shop on Pitt St., taking requests for unique comic book covers from anyone who showed up. Originally from the United States, Isherwood has called Canada home since the age of 11, when his family moved from the eastern US.

Isherwood began illustrating for Marvel in 1983, just after completing his education at John Abbott College and Concordia University in Montreal. Some of his early work included Conan, Doctor Strange, and the Silver Surfer. “I did that until 1999, and then the industry shrunk quite a bit. Living in Montreal, I got into the film industry. I ended up getting an interview for Battlefield Earth. People have different opinions about how that movie came out, but for me it was a terrific experience,” said Isherwood. Now residing in the Ottawa area, Isherwood teaches at Algonquin College on a part-time basis, while also working on projects in the

booming film industry, as a storyboard and concept artist, where comic book adaptations appeal to a wider audience than ever before. “Drawing comics is not easy, and i did a lot of drawing as a kid. This is something I’d like to stress to people who think drawing is just something that comes out of your head, and it’s easy, but it’s not. A lot of practice, a lot of back and forth. Many trips, or sending work down and getting critiques.” His most recent project, Dr. Strange, was released earlier this year. For the first time in Isherwood’s long career, he got to experience the red carpet treatment in Los Angeles, California, where he was invited to the premier,

along with his wife, Amanda Muise. “We were invited to an after party...I got to meet Benedict Cumberbatch, who was great to talk to,” said Isherwood. “We talked for a few minutes...he was interested in the fact that I drew the comic, and asked if his portrayal fit with how I drew the comic.” Some of his previous work includes two of the recent X-Men movies, where Isherwood provided storyboard work. Fans who could not make it today to meet Isherwood will have another chance next spring, as he returns to the Seaway city for the third installment of CAPE pop culture expo, slated for mid April 2017.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Nine members of the Cornwall community, both those in uniform and not, turned up at the Cornwall Cenotaph on Friday, Nov. 4 to show solidarity with soldiers by completing the 22 Push-up Challenge. The 22 Push-up Challenge is a fundraiser by Wounded Warriors Canada to honour the memory of fallen soldiers and to raise money

for those soldiers still suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The social media fundraising campaign swept Canada this past fall with participants encouraged to take videos of their attempts to complete the challenge and in turn, challenge someone else. One such participant was Andre Pommier of Pommier Jewellers, who helped organize Friday morning’s gathering. Pommier had previously completed the challenge by doing his

push-ups on a canoe. “The main reason I wanted to do this was that I really enjoyed doing the challenge,” he said. “I felt it brought me closer to our veterans, because to me, a veteran is a 93-year-old man. That’s not the case anymore though, veterans are young now and all serve to protect our country and its a big undertaking. Today was all about paying respect to our veterans young and old.”

Open Hands First Annual Ladies Night Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media

Open Hands held its First Annual Lady’s Night on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Best Western Hotel. The highlight of the evening event was the themed tables, which rented at $25 apiece. Each table decided on their theme, which was incorporated into the table decorations, costumes and food. Organizer Christine Ouderkirk explained the

Theme” to give us ideas for next year.” Ouderkirk was happy with the turnout for the event. She said, “We got 10 tables of eight this year. My goal for next year is 20.” The Slumber Party actually gathered enough team members to require two tables. The team captain Ashley Foreman, who works for Open Hands, said, “Christine dared me to make a double.” Ouderkirk later said, “It’s great to see a lot of people from the community coming out to help us.”

$25 per table went directly to the agency. Cornwall Open Hands operates residences and programs for developmentally handicapped children and adults. It is a division of OttawaCarleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OCAPDD). The tables were a wide range of themes included Ugly Christmas, Cottage Life, Slumber Party, Women in History, Hollywood, Autumn Fall, Hula Party, Commando, Party Animals, Bubble Bath Party and Wine Fairies. Ouderkirk said, “I figured it would be an “Open

Judges Pam MacDonald and Barb Armstrong walked throughout the lively crowd accessing the tables to determine the winners in each category. Commando Table got the Most Creative, Women in History won Best Costumes, Best Table Decoration went to Hula Party, and Most Original was Party Animals. The winners of The Best of the Best went to Women in History. After the live auction and judging of the tables, David James of Crazy Dave’s D.J. Service provided the music that had the women up dancing.

Faceoff for fun in Le Village CORNWALL, Ontario - The Fourth Annual Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge will be held on Saturday Nov. 19, 2016 on Montreal Road between McConnell Avenue and Baldwin Street, in the heart of Le Village. The tournament, which sees hundreds of local children hit the street to enjoy Canada’s favourite game, is played in a 3-on-3 format with no goalies to make sure the pace is quick, and the fun lasts all day. “We believe that having fun is the most important part of sport and every player who participates will receive a tournament medal,”

Let’s

said street hockey challenge co-organizer Jeff McCullough. The event has become synonymous with the popular Santa Claus Parade that takes place in Cornwall later in the evening on the same day and likewise attracts families from across the city and region. “We are hoping for a good turnout this year, and in addition to our open division, we have a school challenge for Grades 1 to 8,” said co-organizer Robin McIntosh. “Schools will compete for prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500. The criteria for the

Celebrate

competition are school spirit, sportsmanship, and the number of teams entered.” Teams can still enter by contacting McIntosh at cstmcintosh@yahoo.com. Santa’s Street Hockey challenge is a free tournament to enter. The costs associated with this tournament are covered by local, national and international corporations and individuals. The proceeds go back into the community; to schools, the Children’s Christmas Fund and other local charities. Anyone wanting to donate can contact McCullough at jwmccullough1@cogeco.ca.

Pictured from left are Pierre Lefebvre (Le Village vice-chair), Robin McIntosh (street hockey challenge co-organizer), Frédéric Dubuc, Jeff McCullough (street hockey challenge co-organizer) and Michel Dubuc (Le Village chair).

Sarah hadn’t been to church for many many months. She always promised to go, but never did. One day, the pastor was astounded when she suddenly showed up for Sunday service. Thereafter, she was at every Sunday service, every prayer meeting, every home group meeting, etc. Three months later, one Sunday after the service, the pastor asks her, “What happened to you? You always dodged church and now it looks like you can’t get enough of it?” Sarah replied, “It’s this new car of mine, pastor; they told me the warranty will lapse if I miss even one service!”

Pet Tip of the Week: Roaming cats, as well as other household pets and wildlife, may climb under your vehicle’s hood for warmth or find shelter under the car during cold and wet weather. Be sure to check under the hood before starting your engine and honk the horn to scare animals away.
