NORTH GLENGARRY NEWS

The North Glengarry plan to save Maxville P.S. Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

MAXVILLE, Ontario - The Maxville sportsplex was packed on Wednesday night for the North Glengarry Township meeting, the bulk of which was dedicated to informing the public on the future of their local elementary school. What they heard was that Maxville was on the cusp of growth and revitalization, which was being put in jeopardy by the threat to their local public school. Maxville Public School was identified as a school that the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) would like to close pending provincial funding for a capital project to expand Roxmore Public School. If the plan as laid out in the UCDSB’s Peer Accommodation Review (PAR) is followed through with, students from Maxville P.S. and North Stormont P.S. would be bussed to Roxmore. The gathered assembly heard how businesses and groups in the area depend on Maxville Public School and its students. The Home Hardware on Main Street benefits from the school because they buy supplies from that store. Maxville Manor has a peer mentoring program dating back 20 years that has bridged the gap between generations. The young get to learn from the old while at the same time, the students help to bring the seniors out of isolation. In a bid to save the school, the Save Our School committee helped organize a solution to

counter the school board’s proposal. The stated reason for the school board’s move to close schools like Maxville Public is to reduce empty spaces across the school board. In total, the UCDSB has 10, 000 empty student spaces. Save Our School Committe has suggested three steps to reduce empty spaces at Maxville Public School. The first being the disassembly of modular pre-fabricated buildings that are no longer in use. This would reduce empty spaces at Maxville P.S. by at least 100. The second step is to introduce the French Immersion program to every school in the board. As it stands now, only a few schools in each area offer French Immersion. North Glengarry Township Councillor Carma Williams said that the school board acknowledged that their introduction of French Immersion was poorly thought out. “It pitted school against school,” she said. The final step that was suggested was to incorporate the residents living in PrescottRussell North of the 417 into Maxville Public School’s district. Currently those students go to Plantagenet, but the school there, with 30 some students is proposed to be closed with those kids being sent 50km away to Rockland. One resident at the meeting asked “is the school board concerned about us withdrawing our students and sending them to another board if they close our school.” “From what I understand their thinking is that those parents who leave usually come

back,” replied school board Trustee Wendy MacPherson. “That seems to be their thinking so I would say no, they’re not worried about that.” Carma Williams stated that the school board’s attempt to close the school really took the rug out from under the community. “We heard tonight that we are making progress on bringing water to this community,”

she said. “This community is set to grow but it won’t do that without a school.” North Glengarry CAO Don Gagnon had previously told the assembly that the Township had hired lobbyist Roman Kinsella to advocate to the provincial government on their behalf to get more drinkable water to Maxville.

CCH to offer Medical Assistance in Dying Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - At a meeting in November, the Cornwall Community Hospital’s (CCH) Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the Medical Advisory Committee to allow Medical Assistance in Dying at the Hospital. The move conforms with a February 2015 Supreme Court of Canada ruling that found that it was unconstitutional to barr doctors from assisting patients in ending their lives if that was the wish of the patient. On June 17, 2016, the Liberal Government passed legislation to allow Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) in Canada. Under the law, citizens over the age of 18 who are mentally competent and are suffering from a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” are eligible to ask a doctor to assist them in ending their lives. “We have prepared a policy and process that

is consistent with the new legislation that has legalized MAID and defines how we would respond to a request,” said CCH CEO Jeanette Despatie. “Our policy is clear that any healthcare provider may refuse to participate in the provision of the service. We are currently working to ensure that information is readily available to staff, patients and their families.” A fact sheet distributed to CCH staff expanded on the hospital’s stance. “At CCH we believe that exploring the nature of a person’s request for Medical Assistance in Dying is completely consistent with our moral and ethical values,” the fact sheet said. “We are committed to compassionately and respectfully engaging with that person in non-coercive conversations about all treatment and care options available at CCH to help alleviate his or her deep suffering, which could include Medical Assistance in Dying.” The hospital says that they have prepared a step-by-step guideline for patients and healthcare professionals including a 10 day reflection period after the patient has signed the consent

Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) form. Additionally, the hospital notes that any healthcare professional may refuse to participate in administering MAID under religious or conscientious objections under the law. “Information that CCH has prepared for patients and their families emphasizes that

people who choose to have a medically assisted death may change their minds at any point,” the hospital fact sheet states. “It also provides a list of questions to consider and recommendations including discussions with legal counsel and insurance representatives.”

Santa shuffle full of hustle Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - At 10 am on Saturday December 3rd at the Civic Complex, Cornwall joined 41 other cities across Canada to hold the Salvation Army’s Santa Shuffle Fun Run and Elf Walk. This is the 3rd year Cornwall has participated in this event. The 160 racers, which included a group of Cornwall Community Police members, took the 5k fun run or the 1k elf walk along a scenic race route, which included the bike path along the St. Lawrence River toward the gazebo and turned around just past the bridge. Oren Cole, Pastor and Executive Director of the Salvation Army Cornwall, explained the Santa Fun Run and Elf Shuffle is one of three fundraisers the Salvation Army puts on. He said, “We only do three fundraisers, the Santa Shuffle, Carols and Brass and of course the Christmas Kettles.” These events help local individuals and families in need during the holiday season and throughout the year. Cole also said the income from the Thrift Store stays in our community as well to help fund community and family services year round. Thrift Store Manager and Race Director, Julie Leroux said she was excited to organize the event. She said, “I’m excited. I was a runner before. It’s fun to be on this side of it.” Leroux said she was grateful to all the volunteers and sponsors, which included her staff, their families and friends, Mobile Gamerz, Cornwall MMA, Alba Automotive, Axxis Optical, Rick Boyer, Wholesale Club, Cardinal Meats, Cornwall Multisport and Running Room for their help and support.

Dallaire North Stormont and La Nation fight wind farm project Cash only

*Images are indicatives only.

Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario - In his office on Friday, Dec. 2 Jim McDonell promised to ask Premier Kathleen Wynne to withdraw her support for the Nation Rise wind farm project. The project would see wind farms constructed in North Stormont and South Nation. Representatives from both areas say they do not want the wind farms and w have thousands of signed petitions to back them up. Representatives of Save the Nation and Concerned Citizens of North Stormont said that they were opposed to these wind farm projects that were being forced upon them without consultation. The gathered groups also said that their neighbours and their community had been subject to bullying tactics from the wind farm companies EDP Renewables and Leader Resources. “We were told by one of the wind companies “support us and you’d get a cut, oppose us and you’ll get nothing,”” said Margaret Benke, a representative of Concerned Citizens of North Stormont. Leslie Howard of the Save the Nation group said that in his area, residents were being badgered to give up their land. “One lady said she would get calls 50-60 times

a day with them asking her to hand over some of her land,” he said. “Surveyors would come by in the middle of the night and some people were told to give up their land because their neighbours had already, but they hadn’t, they were being lied to.” In North Stormont, the proposed wind farm being constructed by EDP Renewables is scheduled to break ground in 2019 and would affect 1, 196 resident and cover the western half of the township. MPP Jim McDonell explained that the project would not be benefiting the residents of the area. “We really don’t need the power,” he said. McDonell went on to explain that the most daily electrical usage recorded in Ontario did not reach the total capacity that the province could provide. While the project is not scheduled to break ground before the next election, by then it will be too expensive to cancel. McDonell hand-delivered thousands of letters opposing the projects to the Premier and to Minister of Energy Glenn Thibault on Monday. He also stood up in the legislature and asked the Premier to cancel the project. In a written statement, McDonell slammed the project further. “The Nation Rise wind project was approved by the Independent Electricity System Operator

despite meeting none of the rated criteria,” McDonell said. “The community, including abutting landowners, opposed the project from the get-go, and the township declared itself and unwilling host. Despite these clear messages, the IESO allowed the project whose power is completely unnecessary to meet declining power demand in Ontario. Recently, the Government

suspended its second stage of wind and solar procurement because it realized the over-paid power would not be needed in our grid and would have to be off-loaded to our neighbours, again, at a cost. Nation Rise should face the same fate - the community doesn’t want it and the Province doesn’t need it.”

United Way receives generous donation at St. Andrew’s annual banquet Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual St. Andrew’s Day Feast celebration was held at at the Cornwall armoury on the evening of Saturday, December 3, 2016, as the SDG Highlanders regiment put together another great evening of fine dining and entertainment. The annual dinner is a tradition for Highlander regiments across the globe, “It’s a tradition celebrated in many countries around the world, and because we’re a Highland regiment we honour that tradition every year,” said SDG Highlanders regiment spokesperson for the evening, Justin Towndale.“It’s a chance for us to get together as the holidays are approaching and celebrate a great Scottish tradition. We get to get together as a unit, and with members of the public,

and have a good time.” The St. Andrew’s Feast banquet organizers and Highlanders regiment are proud of their Scottish roots, and it shows in the itinerary for the evening. Maintaining the longstanding tradition of haggis eating, singing the ode to the haggis, and bagpipe playing are just some of the ways that the evening keeps our regional heritage alive. “It’s a roguish good time,” said Towndale. The event was originally organized as a formal ball, however, in recent years organizers have turned more towards a banquet style set up. However, one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the Highlanders commitment to the SDG community through generous donations. This year’s recipient of the Highlander’s charitable giving is the United Way campaign. We were really pleased to find out we’d be the

OPINION

Christmas for kids Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

These past few weeks I’ve been highlighting some of the groups and people who take time out of their schedules during this busy time of the year to help make Christmas happen for those who are less fortunate. Christmas can be a difficult time of the year for those who are alone, or have fallen on hard financial times, or both. These things become magnified for a child. It is not a child’s fault if they are alone, or cannot afford to have a full Christmas; all that they know is that their friends have a very different holiday experience than they do. In our community though, for many years, there have been groups dedicated to making Christmas special for kids. The Children’s Christmas Fund has been around since 1948 and every year, year round,

it raises money and resources to make sure that kids don’t go hungry on Christmas. Each member of the Service Club Council contributes to the Christmas Fund. This year Dr. Navaneelan is donating peanut butter, various businesses are donating Christmas hams. The Christmas fund has four different menus based on family size and this year they expect to distribute $75, 000 worth of food to 1, 300 families. Christmas would not be Christmas for any child however without presents. Every year, the Optimist Toy Drive tries to make sure that every child has a toy under their Christmas tree. This year they hope to collect 3, 000 toys to give to 1, 500 children. Send an unwrapped gift to the Optimist Club of Cornwall by December 14 to help a child have a Christmas this year.

Squirrels are a real nuisance Sultan Jessa

All my previous columns have been on serious issues on local, provincial, national and international issues. This column is very different and also on an unusual subject. Like many of you, we have been both entertained and extremely annoyed by those pesky squirrels. Yes, these pests come in all shapes and size and also colors depending on where you live. Squirrels with bushy tails and large piercing eyes are a real nuisance. We have been dealing with little monsters since moving to a new abode which is surrounded by old homes with giant trees where these squirrels find refuse during cold winter. Squirrels are a natural part of the environment

but they can cause real damage to your homes. We have tried everything under the sun to deter these creatures from our property. Nothing seems to work. We are nature lovers and we don’t want to hurt them They attack and chew up our garbage cans and electrical wires. With the advent of spring, we ponder if we should plant flowers and start a vegetable garden. We try planning different vegetables each year, hoping squirrels won’t go after the newly planted vegetables. Nothing is safe. They dig up the ground to and flower pots to hide their loots from other areas of the

neighborhood. They gobble up tomatoes and egg plants and even the fiery, hot chilies are not safe. And the mess these squirrels leave behind is something else. In our area, it is not permitted to feed squirrels. But, many people ignore this. We are nature lovers and have a variety of bird feeders. These squirrels have a way to get to the bird feeders. We even tried petroleum jelly on the poles to prevent squirrels from getting to the seeds. Nothing seems to work. I was reading a news story on a Chicago politician who spoke out against squirrels and was later hospitalized by —— you guessed it – a squirrel.

Howard Brookins Jr. was hospitalized when a squirrel wrapped itself around his bicycle in a“freak accident”. This alderman for Chicago’s 21st ward had publicly spoken about a toothy menace plaguing the city’s garbage carts. Brookins now has another reason to dislike the rodents. One recently sent him to the hospital with a skull fracture in a freak bicycle accident. He was cycling when a squirrel darted into his path. “I can think of no other reason for this squirrel’s actions than that it was like a suicide bomber, getting revenge,” he said. The squirrels have been gnawing through the garbage cart lids at a cost of $300,000 to the city. Is there a lesson for me here?

without a television set and an ugly aerial perched on the roof or running up the side of a dwelling. The survey also found that 74% of Cornwall men smoked. The national figure was 69%. When it came to coffee, 86% of city households purchased coffee (no Tims in those days), five percent higher than the national number. Also this week in 1953 - Canadian Cottons Ltd. announced the closing of its Stormont Mill in Cornwall. The mill, built in 1878, employed 385 people. The mill remained vacant until it was destroyed by fire on Oct. 31, 1961. .... Three Toronto men were arrested and charged with the armed robbery of the Brewer’s Retail outlet in Morrisburg two days earlier. They made off with the day’s receipts of $220 and $363 from store manager William Pride, clerk Ted Smith, cashier Gordon Smith and customer Harry Tindal. ... League play. Ron Quenneville and Gib Wilson also scored. ONE LAST THING Few months back we mentioned that during construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway (circa 1950s) local singers/songwriters Loretta and Morris Burgess of Cornwall came up with “The Seaway Song - 40 Miles of Cool Water”. City resident Dave Varin tells us he has two copies of the vinyl 78 rpm. These might be the only surviving copies. The song went like this “Come down to Cornwall the Seaway Town, there is a lot of activity going around, where they’re digging big ditches and pulling up ground, come on all you people to the Seaway Town”. It didn’t make the Top Anything but got a fair bit of play on CKSF. TRIVIA ANSWER Sylvania manufactured colour television sets at a plant on Vincent Massey Drive. TRIVIA Where was Parc Dollard Park? HERE AND THERE The London Free Press has reported a major break through in the public school system. Not only is London lawyer Matthew Reid, 28, the youngest school board chair in Ontario, he’s also the first openly gay chair of an Ontario public school board. ... In Brockville there is a major push against the proposed Ontario Provincial Police takeover of the city’s municipal force. The group opposing the move (an OPP costing requested by city council is under way) has given out 700 lawn signs and has to ordered more signs. ... One of the myths shamelessly painted by the provincial government supported television ads is that casinos are full of attractive folks having a lot of fun.

families can’t afford hybrid cars and expensive energy-saving upgrades, if they own a home. They can’t afford to put one kid, let alone two or three, in a house league hockey program. They can’t escape to Florida for the winter. So, despite the public relations baloney pumped out by the Wynne government, the capand-trade tax will be a double whammy for consumers, especially for those at the middle and lower links of the food chain. The cap-and-trade tax will make goods and services more expensive. It will cost a lot more to produce and transport goods. Throw in annual inflation and a low Canadian dollar and it is going to cost a lot more to feed a family. It is a strange way to fight poverty. ************************ How things have changed. In November 1953 a Canadian Consumers Survey reported that the number of Cornwall households with a television set was far below the number of Ontario and national households with the new living room fixture. The survey found just 4% of Cornwall households owned a television set, while the Ontario number was 26%. The national number was 17%. This was a time when kids spent most of their spare time playing outdoors and had real, authentic facetime with their friends. Cornwall’s population in 1953 was about 13,000 living within a square mile - Water to Ninth, Cumberland to Marlborough. Five years later the television boom caught up with Cornwall and it was hard to find a household

If you think the demand on Ontario food banks - especially in Cornwall which has one of the lowest average household incomes in the province - is going through the roof, despite the generous federal child payments, just wait until the full impact of the province’s cap-and-trade billion dollar heist, set to begin Jan. 1, is felt. A recent study reported that Ontario families are expected to spend at least $420 more on food in 2017, and that doesn’t take into account the bump that will be created by cap-and-trade. The added cost is being soft-pedalled by Kathy and the Wynettes who have lowballed the firstround financial hit, claiming that it will “only” add $165 to the annual energy and gasoline bill for the average Ontario household. It doesn’t take into account any spike, or even slight increase, in price increases driven by supply and demand and passed along by the energy companies, increases that affected just about sector of the economy. Hardly exciting news for exasperated folks on fixed incomes and the working poor trying to keep up with a barrage of tax/ fee increases and skyrocketing energy prices. Studies show that energy cost increases over the last 10 years have outpaced income increases. Not too bad for somebody with a six-figure income; a struggle for family households under $50,000. This has created energy poverty, where the dreaded hydro bill keeps gnawing at the food budget. You can only turn down the thermostat so far. Lower income

Merci ! Xavier Labrecque xo

Offer is not transferrable or assignable, except to the current owner’s spouse or a co-owner/co-lease of the existing vehicle (either of whom must reside within the same household as the intended recipient of the offer). Individuals who purchased/leased a vehicle under a business name can qualify for the program provided that the new deal is not a fleet deal and that the individual can provide valid documentation that they are the registered primary owner of the business. If the eligible customer elects to lease or finance a new and previously unregistered model year 2016 Nissan brand vehicle (excluding NV, Fleet and daily rentals) (an “Eligible New Vehicle”) through Nissan Canada Finance Inc. (collectively “NCF”), then he/she will receive a specified amount of NCF Loyalty/Conquest Cash, as follows: (I) 2016 ALTIMA ($2,000); (II) 2016 MICRA/VERSA NOTE/SENTRA ($500); (III) 2016 JUKE/ROGUE ($600); (IV) 2016 PATHFINDER ($800); (V) 2016 TITAN XD ($1,000); (VI) 2017 TITAN HALF TON ($1,000); (VII) 2017 MICRA/VERSA NOTE/SENTRA ($500); (VIII) 2017 ALTIMA ($1,250); (IX) 2017 ROGUE/JUKE ($600); (X) 2017 PATHFINDER ($800). Loyalty/Conquest Dollars will be applied after taxes. Offer is combinable with other NCF incentives, but is not combinable with the Nissan Loyalty program. Offer valid on vehicles delivered between December 1-31, 2016. ▲Models shown $38,524/$28,029 Selling price for a new 2017 Rogue SL (PR00)/2017 Sentra SR (RL00). Shar’s Tip of the Week

If you live in a hard-water area, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that your toilet will form a ring on the inside of the bowl, right at the waterline. The ring is simply minerals left behind at the point where water meets air and evaporates. The longer you let it go, the

heavier it will grow. When a ring is young and tender, an enthusiastic brushing with acid bowl cleaner will do. An old ring is a real encrustation that calls for mightier measures. Bleach isn’t the solution because it may take the color out of the ring, but the ring itself remains and keeps on building up and coming back. Take a pumice stone/bar, wet it in the toilet water, and rub it on the ring, being sure to keep it wet the whole time. Do not use on coloured or plastic fixtures.

Dear Santa, Hi, my name is Dominick Caine and I am 11 years old. I tried really hard to be good this year. My mom says that Iam being nicer with my neices Lyla and Jersey. This year I would like talking Jessie from Toy Story, a big fire truck, and some puppies from Paw Patrol and can you please bring a talking Woody, one for Lyla and one for Jersey. Just so we don’t fight anymore. Mom says I have to share but then Lyla and Jersey still fight over Woody so if they each had their own they could try and be good to. I will leave you some milk and cookies and carrots for Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and 2 for Rudolph because he’s the leader and needs to make sure he can see good so he doesn’t crash into a chimney. This year my Christmas wish would be that they find a cure for DRAVET Syndrome. Love Dominick and Merry Christmas

I would like to thank the lovely lady who bought my groceries at Food Basics on November 29. I would like you to know I’ve called the Agapé Centre to donate the amount of my bill to them. Once again it was a very nice thing you did and I’m paying it forward.

“Thank you to the folks at Panoramic Towers for giving so generously to our 10th Annual Christmas Food Drive. This year Agape was the recipient of our food and cash donations. Thank you for sharing in the Christmas spirit! Merry Christmas everyone!”

SEAWAY NEWS PET CORNER

The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group got into the festive spirit early by giving away 150 Christmas trees to families in Lindsay, Alexandria and Perth last Saturday. The Commonwell staff handed out 50 trees in each community in exchange for a cash donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations in Lanark County, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, and Cornwall and District. The Commonwell’s Alexandria office raised $850.00 from public donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District. After the local insurer boosted the public funds raised with an additional $500.00 donation, the total raised for the charity was $1,350.00. Pictured are: Monique Tourangeau, Nathalie Chalifoux, Lynne Hurtubise (The Commonwell), Rachelle Joanette, Scott Daprato, Amanda Brisson (BBBS), Denis Miller, Brittany Hagen (BBBS), Mary Ranallo, A. A Year of Christmas Joy for Shut-ins Got someone special in a nursing home or retirement community? Buy an attractive twelvemonth calendar with pockets. Fill each month with treats and include a sealed greeting card for each holiday of the year. Suggested items are bookmarks, sealed tea bags, notepads, pens, special poems, compact disks of favourite music, photos of grandchildren or important events, a decorative handkerchief, lapel pins, very small inspirational books and stationery. Since mail is often rare for shut-ins, why not subscribe them to an inspirational magazine?

The Seaway Lions Club in conjunction with the Cornwall Lions Club presented a cheque to the Children’s Treatment Centre for $10, 000 with some of the profits from their last summer’s Ribfest. Pictured in the photo are Tim Beach from the Seaway Lions Club, Andy Graham, a CTC board member and Cornwall Lions Marcel Lapierre and Bill Swinden. Caller who works at YIG would like to send a “basket of cheers”to the Brownies who were at the store last Wednesday evening shopping and picking items, probably to earn their badges. They then donated the items they chose to the Food Hamper set-up at the store for the less fortunate.

What Does GoD Look Like?

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, ‘’I’m drawing God.’’ The teacher paused and said, ‘’But no one knows what God looks like.’’ Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, ‘’They will in a minute.’’
