These natural treatments can be used to address different varieties of issues, ranging from chronic pain, chronic gastrointestinal complaints, fatigue, prostate problems, stress, mood disorders, and many other medical ailments. Dr. Novy has completed a pre-medical sciences bachelor degree and a four year naturopathic medical degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. “Naturopathic medicine has always been a strong passion of mine,” said Dr. Novy at the opening of her new clinic. “It became apparent to me early on that there is a need for other treatment perspectives. TORONTO, Ontario - A disciplinary hearing held by the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA) on Monday, Nov. 28 handed down a $900, 000 fine to former Cornwall mutual fund dealer Gilled Latour and banned him permanently from the securities business. In a conversation with Seaway News Latour slammed the MFDA process. “They decided to suspend me, ban me and fine me without any input from Gilles Latour,” Latour said. “They put me on hold for five minutes and came back with this number of $900, 000.” Latour said that other oganizations, like the Chambre Financieres de Quebec have chose to wait to rule on his case until after his criminal proceedings are settled. In a decision on June 7, 2016, the MFDA that Latour had taken $651,946 from at least three “vulnerable” clients between 2007 and 2014 and never paid the money back.

The MFDA also ruled that Latour had obstructed the investigation into those accusations. “I told them that the information that they were seeking would come out in the criminal trial,” Latour said. “I’ve been told by my lawyer not to comment on anything related to the criminal proceedings.” Latour is also facing 43 criminal charges and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9.

The burning Yule log on the hearth gives a sense of winter warmth and Christmas cheer. To keep the home fires burning safely, follow these safety tips: √ Gift wrapping, boxes, cartons, and other types of packing must not be burned in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate far too much heat for that type of structure. √ Don’t hang Christmas stockings from the fireplace mantel when it is in use. √ Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to protect against flying sparks. √ Never use gasoline or any other flammable liquids to start a fire. √ Use only seasoned and dry wood. √ Clean the ashes regularly. Place the ashes in a metal container and store outside away from flammable materials. √ Don’t use Christmas trees for fire wood.
- When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant.” Although this label does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. - When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green; needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. - When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and radiators. Because heated rooms dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of foot traffic and do not block doorways. - Tree disposal after the holidays: When you’re ready to get rid of your tree, please do not burn it in the fireplace or wood stove. The rapid burning and excessive heat can damage the firebox and chimney creating a serious fire hazard. Instead, find out from your municipality the day when trees will be picked at your curbside. Many municipalities recycle Christmas trees into mulch.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Fire Service has received a $10,000 donation from Enbridge to assist with the establishment of a local training centre for Firefighters. Enbridge Senior Land Agent Norm Cassidy presented a cheque to Fire Chief Pierre Voisine and Training Officer Murray Fenton on Monday at the main Fire Hall on Fourth Street. The training centre, to be built on the site of the old soccer bubble on Saunders Drive, will house shipping containers with gas-powered simulators to provide real-life training scenarios. “We will be able to simulate car fires and tank fires in a controlled setting,” said Chief Voisine. “Having this type of equipment will make for a safer training environment.” The training centre – which could be operational by the spring – will provide a venue for year-round training for Cornwall firefighters as well as those in the neighbouring townships of SDG. “This funding from Enbridge is critical to making this project a reality,” the Fire Chief added.

Crooked Christmas Market raises big haul for Rachel’s Kids CORNWALL, Ontario - It was a holly jolly day at the Crooked Cashé nightclub on Saturday, Dec. 3, as the bar hosted a family event featuring local craft vendors and raised nearly $4, 000 for Rachel’s Kids. Along with unique crafts available for purchase, the Christmas Market featured photos with Santa, a children’s activity area, a wrapping centre manned by Cornwall Community Cheer (a local organization that spreads goodwill throughout the city), a hot chocolate bar, and delicious holiday themed adult beverages. “We really wanted to put a different spin on the
regular craft sales that have become a bit monotonous” said event organizer Shannon Ferguson, of Rhoice Marketing & Events. “We wanted people to be able to enjoy a drink while they did their Christmas shopping and really see how great this space is”. The Market also featured a unique downtown sleigh ride, allowing people to view the city centre while being pulled by two large Clydesdale horses. The horse drawn carriage drew the attention of many passerby as they waved and took photos from their cars.

“It was an idea we came up with to try to showcase downtown in a different way. Everyone is always saying there’s nothing going on in Cornwall so we wanted to give people something cool to do” said Ferguson. Giving back to the community was the main goal of the event organizers, which also included Kate Dwyer, of Kate Dwyer Designs, and Matthew Girgis, owner of the Crooked Cashé nightclub. “A lot of people in Cornwall need help during the holidays and we wanted to make sure families, and especially kids, could have a Christmas to look forward to” explained Girgis. The organizers decided to donate their proceeds to Rachel’s Kids, an organization that helps fund programs and care for local area children. The event also received food and clothing donations for the Agapé Centre, in exchange for free entry.
Dwyer was excited with the local support and the turnout. “We are so happy that we could help the community and that we raised this much in only the first year! To hear the great feedback from people and how much they enjoyed the day really makes it a true success”. The total amount raised includes a matching from Scotiabank, as well as entry and sleigh ride fees, hot chocolate bar donations, a Silent Auction, a raffle, and a 50/50 draw. Said Ferguson “The amount of support is amazing to see. From local businesses who donated prizes all the way down to the volunteers, the vendors, and the people who attended, we really proved that Cornwall does have great holiday spirit”. The Crooked Cashé is located behind Kastner’s and regularly runs as a nightclub for those 19+.

OPINION
All that our city has to offer this holiday season Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Somehow, there are still those who think that there is nothing to do in this city, especially young people. I have to admit, I used to think that way myself when I was in high school. On a typical evening my friends and I would walk around the mall. Then, when we got bored of that, we’d walk around Wal-Mart. The City of Cornwall however, has pulled out all the stops this holiday season to ensure that there are fun activities for young and old. Just last week someone told me that Cornwall was a hockey town and looking at all of the hockey related activities coming up, it must really be true that the people of Cornwall enjoy their hockey. This coming Monday, Dec. 19 a World Juniors Exhibition game is taking place here in Cornwall at the Ed Lumley Arena. The game will see Sweden facing off against Slovakia. Slovakia will be around Cornwall before the game and they will stay for a while after. Slovakia and Denmark will be honing their skills on a daily basis on the ice at the Benson
Centre starting on Dec. 15. The full schedule of the practices is available at the Benson Centre and the practices are free to watch. If you want to get out onto the ice yourself, the Benson Centre has plenty of skating opportunities coming up. There is public skating at the Benson Centre on Friday and Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons for $3 for adults, Seniors skating is Monday mornings and Friday afternoons and parents can take their tots for a skate on Wednesday mornings. On top of that, Tim Horton’s is sponsoring Holiday Free Skates from Wednesday, Dec. 28 to Friday Dec. 30 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and again from Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Thursday, Jan. 5. By the way, public skating makes for a good winter date idea. If there are any up and coming hockey youths looking for a more competitive skating experience, the Benson Centre’s Stick & Puck program is open to all future Gretzky’s aged 5 to 14. The program lets young stakers get on the ice in full hockey gear and practice
fundamentals like passing, puck control and skating drills. Stick & Puck is from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. every Saturday in December and continues in January, February and March. There is still more to come this winter season, especially with the great work that Cornwall’s Canada 150 Committee is doing in Lamoureux Park. In January, sleigh/ wagon rides are going to
be offered in the park and will continue until the end of February. There might not be any better way to see the transformation that Lamoureux Park has undergone for Canada’s 150th birthday than from a horse drawn sleigh. So don’t say that there is nothing going on in Cornwall. Get out there and enjoy all that our city has to offer.
Christmas from three fresh points of view Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words I’ve written a Christmas column every year since 1994. That’s 22 different columns about Christmas. Here’s a different point of view, Christmas from the point of view of three animals that have been a significant element of my life. First, there was Matza, the cat that came from Vienna, Austria in 1974. That delightful tabby stayed with us for about 14 years. Then there was Wimpy, the miniature poodle, a.k.a. ‘HTD#1’. He was adopted as a member of our family, also for 14 years. Finally, there was Keesha, the American Eskimo miniature, known as ‘TLWD’, who was my constant companion for a dozen years. That gives me 40 years of fourlegged perspectives on Christmas memories. Let’s hear from Matza first. “Really, my name should be ‘macska’, the Hungarian word for ‘cat’, just as Santa Claus’ should really be called ‘Saint Nicholas’. When we left Vienna 1n 1974, I was just a little kitten. Until our Westfalia spent
never could figure out why the choir sings, “Oh come, oh come Emmanuel...”, then, when He comes, they change His name to ‘Jesus’. I don’t know why, but what I do know is that Christmas is when all sorts of people come to our place. They come to eat, to sing and to tell stories about other Christmases.” Finally, Keesha’s take on Christmas. “ Wimpy is right on: Christmas is about those people of long ago, that one special person, His mom and dad, that kind innkeeper, those three travellers from afar and the angel who
advised them to take a different route home. It’s also about the people of today, those who have no place to rest their weary head, those who travel great distances to be with loved ones, those who bring gifts from afar, those old ones who are alone on Christmas, who cannot travel to be with loved ones, or those who were close to them and are now waiting to be with them again in some place unknown, a place that is not a dot on any map. I hope that someday, some Christmas and more, I will once again travel everywhere with that special guy I spent a dozen years with. Then it’ll be a Merry Christmas, a very Merry Christmas.” There can be are all sorts of people in the Christmas tableau: there’s Mom and Dad; brothers and sisters; your life partner; sons and daughters; grandchildren; aunts and uncles; cousins, nieces and nephews. We must also save some room for Santa, Rudolph, the Little Drummer Boy, Good King Wenceslaus… but let’s not forget the reason for the season. Season? No, not winter; no, not just the holiday season. It’s the season of Christmas.

some time in Budapest, I was just called ‘kitty, kitty, kitty…’ However, whenever little Hungarian children saw me, they’d excitedly cry out what sounded like ‘moytch-kah, moytch-kah!’ From then on, Nick called me Matza, because he is clueless about proper Hungarian pronunciation.” What’s Matza’s fondest memory of Christmas? “Nick wasn’t a linguist, but he’s a good enough crèche-maker. The barn board one he built for me was big enough for me to snooze in. I just had to push aside the three guys and the donkey that were already there. To me, Christmas is crèche-time.” Let’s hear from Wimpy: “Christmas is supposed to be all about baby Jesus, Mary’s little boy child. I

for Badin, who spoke little English. However, at the insistance of Salhany, a translator was provided for her husband when he took the stand. In a nutshell, the defence said Gero forced Wahbeh, who had his wife and young daughter with him, to drive to the scene of the shooting from Montreal. Gero, the defence added, had forced his way into the family’s car when it stopped for a red light. Wahbeh testified that Gero pretended to have a gun in his pocket and that he feared for the safety of his wife and child. Wahbeh testified that Gero had him pull off Highway 401 just west of Cornwall, then tried to sexually assault Badin in a field about 30 yards off the highway. Wahbeh took a loaded .22-calibre revolver he just happened to have in his trunk and went to his wife’s defence. Somehow, in the struggle with Gero, the revolver fired twice. Wahbeh said he had no intention of shooting Gero. He was just trying to scare him. Wahbeh said it was his habit to carry the loaded revolver in his trunk. Police said they found the weapon under a floor board that was covered by a bag of potatoes when they searched the family’s apartment. The accused said he didn’t flee the country, that he left for a planned visit with family in Jordan. Gero’s story was that Wahbeh pulled the gun on him in the car and ordered him into the field. He was shot twice after being robbed and left for dead. He said the two had met for the first time in a Montreal cafe a few days earlier. After being left for dead, Gero said he managed to stumble to the nearby accident scene. Medical evidence said that if not for the nearby accident about the same time as the shooting, Gero would have bled to death. Even Judge George Brennan, who had clashed

Claude McIntosh When Const. Eric Riddell arrived at the scene of a 4:30 a.m. minor single-car traffic accident on Highway 401 just west of Cornwall on July 12, 1967, he found a man bleeding from the mouth. The driver thought he had struck the man when his vehicle slid off the highway in heavy rain. Realizing the man was badly injured, the officer placed him in the cruiser and rushed to Cornwall General Hospital. At the hospital, the OPP officer learned that the 25-year-old injured man was anything but a traffic accident victim. He had been shot twice, through the back of the neck and in the stomach. It was the start of an intriguing investigation that stretched to Montreal and the Middle East. The victim, Watson Gero, survived thanks to the skill of city surgeon Dr. Raymond Aubin. Gero, who worked for a Montreal floor cleaning firm, told police a man he was with earlier in the evening in downtown Montreal had shot him after robbing him of $70. A few days later an arrest warrant was issued for Karry Wahbeh, 48. Police discovered he had left for his native Jordan the day after the shooting. Wahbeh was arrested three months later when he returned from Jordan. He was charged with intent to cause bodily harm and robbery. The trial started Dec. 7 (the justice system moved much faster in those days) and appeared to be a slam dunk for the prosecution. Defence lawyer Michael Salhany agreed that Gero had been shot by his client. However, Salhany said it was in defence of Wahbeh’s 28-year-old wife, Badin, their four-year daughter and himself. Incredibly, the court did not provide a translator

Can you please bring me some activity learning toys, some cool clothes, goodies so I can share with everyone, dogie treats for my puppy “Mo”, and something very special for Mommy & Daddy too. Dear Santa, I’m sure you remember but my name is Ava Fae Charlebois and I’ll be 4 years old in March. This past year has gone by very quickly and was full of joy and laughter and the occasional temper tantrum but c’mon, I’m just a kid! As always, my mommy and daddy have worked very hard to give me everything I need and most of what I want, I’m a pretty blessed little girl! My mommy told me that if I stopped needing diapers by Christmas I would DEFINITELY make it on your nice list and guess what: I’ve been diaper free for months now! So, let’s get down to business, Big Guy. This year I would love to find the My Little Pony Crystal Empire Castle and a Play Doh ice cream shop under our tree on Christmas morning because while I may be stubborn at times I’m also very kind and am a wonderful big sister to Gracie so I’m hoping you and the elves will find time to make those toys for me, please. I’ve been baking with Mommy (she says I’m her favourite sous-chef) so we will leave some goodies out for you and the reindeer. I love you very much Santa. Have a safe trip and don’t forget your toque because “Baby, it’s cold outside!” Thanks Santa! Love Ava

Dear Mr.Claus, Hi! My name is Gracie Lu Charlebois but you may know me as LuLu or Grumpy Cat or one of my other nicknames. Things are very different this year Santa because, as you may have heard, I turned 1 back in September! I walk like a champ, have popped one tooth and while my hair may not be growing, my personality sure is! When I’m out with my family, one minute I’ll be waving happily at everyone I see then the next minute I’m scowling and being totally grumpy but that’s just part of my charm...I’m a little lady with many layers! Our house is full of toys and books and while my sister Ava and I are very good at sharing, I would really love something that’s just for me. So this Christmas I’m asking for a beautiful Dolly that I can take care of...one with long, blonde hair just like my Mommy’s please. I’m really excited for this Christmas since I’m such a big girl...ripping open my gifts will be so much fun! Thank you so much Santa and please don’t forget to give Mrs.Claus a big, sloppy kiss from me! Merry Christmas! Love Gracie Lu

Shar’s Tip of the Week
Smoke is composed of tiny particles of oils, tars, resins, nicotine, and water vapor floating in the air. When washing, we’re usually talking about the yellow film that builds up on surfaces where these particles come to rest. A degreaser works well for cleaning walls, ceilings etc. Add 1 part isopropyl alcohol to 5 parts window cleaner to help cut the oily film on windows or glass.

How is Norma?
A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph ‘s Hospital. She timidly asked, “Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?” The operator said, “I’ll be glad to help, dear. What’s the name and room number of the patient?” The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, “Norma Findlay, Room 302.” The operator replied, “Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse’s station for that room.” After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, “I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal, and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow.” The grandmother said,”Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.” The operator replied,”You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?” The grandmother said,”No, I’m Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me anything.”

Cornwall Spine Care Plus’ annual Coat Drive is in full swing this winter season. Every year, Cornwall Spine Care Plus collects winter coats, mitts and boots at their office at 117 Eleventh Street West in Cornwall and donates them to the Salvation Army. The drive this year began on Nov. 1 and will continue right up to New Year’s Day. All winter clothes collected stay in the area. So far they have made three drop offs to the Salvation Army and have collected over 500 warm garments to date. “The Salvation Army does a wonderful job of identifying individuals and families who may benefit from a winter coat donation and will distribute the coats based on need throughout the winter season,” said Cornwall Spine Care Plus in a statement.
