Preparations for 2017 Visitor Guide underway Work is underway on the production of a 2017 Visitor Guide that will introduce Cornwall and SDG to visitors. The guide will be the first project to mark the collaboration of the City and United Counties under a new model to deliver tourism marketing and visitor services. “Work began on the new guide several weeks ago,” says Bob Peters, Division Manager of Economic Development with the City of Cornwall. “Our goal is to encourage visitors to add additional stops while in the area, be it visiting shops, having a meal or staying overnight at one of our hotels.” The 2017 Visitor Guide will include information on accommodations, merchants, restaurants, attractions and and activities - in addition to having a calendar of events. “We are committed to ensuring visitors have a resource to help them explore the entire region,” says Terry Besner, Economic Development and Communications Officer with the United Counties of SDG. “The 2017 guide will be full of interesting photos and itinerary ideas.” The 2017 Visitor Guide will feature a number of changes from recent years, most notably a more compact size and the inclusion of maps.

news

“The digest size will make it more convenient for visitors to carry the guide and maps will help them find their way,” adds Mr. Peters. The Guide is a co-operative effort between the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SDG with all costs being equally split. The project is being spearheaded by Linda Wilson, new Tourism Co-ordinator for the City and Shauna Baggs, Tourism Co-ordinator for the United Counties of SDG. The cost of the guide will be partly offset by advertising, and TC Media will once again produce the publication. The number of guides produced will be increased this year. “Any company looking to reach potential customers visiting the area should consider supporting the Visitor Guide,” says Ms. Besner. A grant has been secured from the Cornwall and the Counties Community Futures Development Corporation to produce a French version of the guide. The guide will be distributed at various locations, including Ontario Travel Centres, area attractions, local hotels and merchants, as well as at three trade shows in the early part of 2017. The distribution date for the guide is March 2017.

Keeping cats out of the cold Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Khloe and her friend Amelie were heartbroken when they heard neighbourhood cats meowing out in the cold on New Year’s Eve. “I wanted to let the cat in, but mom didn’t want to so I went to the neighbour’s next door,” said Khloe. Khloe said that their neighbour gave them some supplies that let them make a cat shelter. “The kids were thrilled when they saw cats starting to use it. There are four or five of them out there now,” said Sara Arsenault, Khloe’s mother. The family already has two cats, Sir Fluffins and Sinimins, which is why Sara did not feel safe in letting the neighbourhood cats in the house to warm-up. She could not be sure if they carried fleas or diseases they could spread, hence the outdoor cat shelters. The original cat shelter was made of a cardboard box and a plastic garbage bag and did not hold up the best in the weather, but after

their story got out, Amelie and Khloe were soon sent more materials to make more shelters, which they were excited to do. Sara shared Khloe and Amelie’s story on Facebook and soon they were being sent donations, cat food, styrofoam boxes, and even a cat door. The girls said they appreciate any other donations that let them make more shelters. Sara and her family have always been strong supporters of the OSPCA, having adopted both of their cats from the organization. Sara said that everything that is leftover from when their project is done will be donated to the OSPCA. Amelie and Khloe are excited to make more cat shelters and to put out food to keep their furry friends warm during the winter. Amelie Matte, 9, and Khloe Neron, 7, sit next to some of the cat shelters that they made for their furry friends in their neighbourhood (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

CORNWALL, Ontario - On Wednesday, Jan. 11 Science and Nature on Tap launched its 2017 season when world respected environmental trail blazer, Larry McDermott came to speak in Cornwall at Schnitzels European Flavours. A member of Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation, Larry McDermott has a Masters’ Degree from the School of Canadian Studies and Native and Northern Studies from Carlton University. Executive Director of Plenty Canada, an organization dedicated to environmental protection and healthy communities, Larry is also co-chair of the Canadian Environmental Network Biodiversity Caucus. He also serves as a Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Larry provides an indigenous world view where people are deemed an integral part of the environment and that maintains that we can only sustain healthy lives when the environment as a whole is healthy. Plenty Canada maintains that the bio-diversity of our environment is a precious resource that we all need to care for together. Bringing both indigenous ways of knowing and western science to the table as a means of solving environmental concerns is something that the world actually acknowledged at the United Nations Earth Summit in June of 1992. In Canada we are striving towards determining strategies to protect the environment in ways that combine both indigenous knowledge and western science to create real world solutions to serious problems. To that end, Larry travels the

Giving away coffee and kindness Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - One Cornwall business has been selected to take part in the first Common Kindness Day next week. An anonymous business has made Jan. 10 Common Kindness Day. It’s a kind of unofficial holiday. Independently owned shops from around the Province have been sponsored by this nameless benefactor with the goal of spreading kindness across Ontario next Tuesday. There have been 10 locations in total in the Province that have been chosen. The Grind in

Cornwall is one of those locations. “I think it’s really nice,” said Susan LalondeMartin, of The Grind. “It feels great that they chose us.” The benefactor has given The Grind enough money to give out 100 coffees free of charge. The only thing asked in return, is that customers consider passing on the favour for the next person. When someone is handed one of the free coffees at The Grind, they will have the option of Ashley Bender, Kayla Martin and Susan Lalonde-Martin of The Grind Café are ready to paying a little bit back into the tab so that the free pay-it-forward, are you?

Taking stock of history Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

The locomotive on the corner of Brookdale and Ninth. Hotel, built in the late 1920s and torn down in 1982. Did you know there used to be an 18th century tower fort on the corner of St. Felix and Easton? How cool would it be if that was still around? Some of these buildings needed to come down for the sake of building space to accommodate a growing community, but

At the end of last month, one of Cornwall’s oldest institutions celebrated a very important birthday. December 26, 2016 marked the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Port Theatre, formerly The Roxy. Did you know however, that The Port was not always Cornwall’s oldest theatre? I didn’t. In 1991 the Cornwall Capitol Theatre was torn down on the site where the Cornwall Courthouse now sits on Second Street West. Built in 1928, if the building still stood and the theatre was still operational, the Capitol Theatre would be 90-years-old next January. One reason why I probably do not remember the Capitol is that I was 2-yearsold in 1991, but I learned a little bit about it following Cornwall’s Little Historian Sara Lauzon on Facebook. Lauzon showcases a lot of great historical photos from Cornwall’s past on her Facebook page and if you’re a fan of local history, I suggest you go and check it out, but something striking I learned from it is that a lot of Cornwall’s history has been torn down. Another lost treasure was the Cornwallis

bouquet of red roses on the grave, bowed her head and said a tearful prayer of reconciliation. Jane Fonda flew back to California later that day at peace with herself. Wade told the Watertown Times, “I mean really, what are the odds of meeting twice like that, and on opposite sides of the country.” TRIVIA ANSWER Progressive Conservative candidate Grant Campbell snapped the longtime Liberal grip on Stormont riding, crushing Liberal incumbent Albert Lavigne in the 1958 Diefenbaker sweep. However, in the 1962 election, Campbell lost his seat to Lucien Lamoureux. The margin of victory was a razor thin 70 votes. The Stormont election was deferred to July 16 when Lavigne, seeking to regain his seat, died of a heart-attack two weeks before the federal election. Lamoureux was nominated on June 25 to replace Lavigne on the ballot. Lamoureux was reelected when Diefenbaker called a snap election in 1963, this time beating Conservative candidate Ken Bergeron by a healthy 1,987 votes. A sidebar to the 1962 Stormont contest was New Democratic Party candidate Marjorie Ball, wife of St. Paul’s United Church pastor Frank Ball, who supported his wife’s decision. Her bold move to enter politics, especially under the NDP banner, caused a major flap in the mostly conservative congregation. TRIVIA In February 1998 this noted chemist in the field of polymer science left Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School left an endowment of $1 million to fund student bursaries. The New York City resident was a Cornwall native who graduated from CCVS.

SPORTS STUFF How nutty is the Federal Hockey League schedule? The Cornwall Nationals had to travel some eight hours from Port Huron, Mich. (across from Sarnia) Saturday to play a home game that night against Berlin River Drivers. The Nats played in Port Huron Friday night and stayed over, leaving Saturday morning. ... There was a time when some semi-pro hockey teams went with a playing coach to save a few dollars, but never heard of a playing general manager which the Nationals have in forward Basem Awwad. He took over the role when Mitch Gagne left the team in December. THIS AND THAT The judge had to be impressed with a Massena area’s man determination to make it to court last week to face a charge of driving a motor vehicle while under suspension. He had arranged for a friend to drive him the 12 miles to court but at the last minute the friend said he couldn’t pick him up. Not wanting to get in trouble with the judge, he went to the barn, saddled up his horse and rode to the court house. The downside was that the case had been put over to another date. AROUND AND ABOUT Another member of the “old guard” retiring from the StandardFreeholder. Peter Padbury, long-time S-F advertising manager and former Thomson Newspapers publisher, puts in his last official day on Friday. He is among the dozens of Postmedia veterans who have taken the buyout carrot. As one of the company lawyers told this scribbler, “Don’t retire ... wait for the buyout.” In the big papers, the chain has lost some of its most senior and best writers that include Cam Cole and Ken Fidlin.

Back in December, just across the St. Lawrence River and 30 miles or so west of Cornwall on Route 37, a famous American actress, who had arrived the day before from her California home, knelt at the grave of her mother, Frances Ford Seymour. Jane Fonda, 79, had come to the snow-covered Ogdensburg cemetery to make peace with her mother, and to close a decades-old tragic chapter in her life. Frances Ford Seymour, young and beautiful, was the second wife of Henry Fonda and mother of Jane and Peter. Frances was born into a wealthy family near Brockville. According to a report of her marriage to Henry in 1936, the Seymour family had a summer residence along the St. Lawrence River in Morrisburg before moving across the river to Ogdensburg. Frances committed suicide in 1950 on her 42nd birthday, a day after Henry said the marriage was over. Jane, 12 at the time, spent most of the next 64 years blaming her abusive, coldhearted, promiscuous mother for the toxic family environment and marriage break-up. That changed several years ago when, after gaining access to her mother’s medical records, Jane was horrified to discover that her mother had been abused sexually and physically as a child and that she had nine abortions before Jane was born. She suffered mental illness. The actress told a Los Angeles reporter, “The minute that I read that (medical records), everything fell into place ... and I was able to forgive her

and forgive myself.” The secret visit to Ogdensburg had a remarkable coincidence. Some might call it fate. Four years ago Fonda walked into a California shop and discovered that the owner, John Wade, was from Ogdensburg and that he was familiar with her mother’s gravesite. Before leaving the store the actress asked a favour. If he ever returned to Ogdensburg, would he visit her mother’s grave and say a prayer on her behalf. Just so happened Wade was planning to visit his former home in a few months and agreed to fulfil the actress’s wish. But Wade didn’t just return to Ogdensburg for a visit, he moved back to the village. He bought a bed and breakfast called Sherman Inn. He also made that promised visit to Frances Ford Seymour’s gravesite, and said that prayer for Jane. Even recorded it. Just in case.... End of story. Hardly. Last month Wade couldn’t believe what he was hearing when Fonda’s agent booked a room for one night for the actress. How, he probably wondered, did she know he had moved back to Ogdensburg and purchased the bed and breakfast? Turns out she didn’t know. It was, well just a coincidence. Or, was it fate? When she arrived he reminded her that he was the guy in the store four years earlier. The guy who promised to say a prayer for her at her mother’s grave. He even played the recording he made. The next day Fonda went to the gravesite. In an emotional few minutes the actress placed a

Sharon Fortier

Shar’s Tip of the Week Fabric softeners are waxy materials that are related to soap. They work by coating your laundry with waxy lubricants and humectant chemicals. The lubricants let fibers slide past each other, reducing wrinkling. They also separate a napped fabric’s fibers and stand them on end, which makes a towel, for instance, feel fluffy. The humectancts help the fabric retain moisture to dissipate the static charges that would otherwise cause clothes to cling and sparks to fly when you pull them apart. There are three basic types of fabric softeners. RINSE liquids are added to the wash during the rinse cycle. DRYER SHEETS are absorbed with softener. When you put a sheet into the dryer along with the laundry, contact and heat release the softener. DETERGENTS with FABRIC softeners are added at the start of the wash cycle. The most effective is liquid softeners but DRYER SHEETS soften to roughly the same degree and detergents with fabric softener is the lesser of the two.

Thank you to everyone who helped me look for my wedding band that I lost at Au Vieux Duluth on Dec. 24th. A special thank you to the man who wouldn’t quit looking even after I gave up. These people were so kind and tried so hard to find my ring. Also, thank you to the management of Au Vieux Duluth who said he and his staff would look for the ring once they close up. A gorilla goes into a bar and orders a martini. This totally amazes the bartender, but he thinks, “What the heck, I guess I might as well make the drink.” So he mixes the martini. He then walks back over to the give it to the gorilla, and the animal is holding out a twenty-dollar bill. Well, now the bartender is just at a loss for words. He can’t believe that a gorilla walked into his bar, ordered a martini, and then actually had a twenty-dollar bill to pay for it. So, in amazement, he takes the twenty and walks to the cash register to make the change. While he’s standing in front of the cash register he stops for a second and thinks to himself, “Let me try something here and see if the gorilla notices anything.” So he walks back over to the gorilla and hands him a dollar change. The gorilla doesn’t say anything, he just sits there sipping the martini. After a few minutes the bartender just can’t take it anymore. “You know,” he says to the gorilla, “we don’t get too many gorillas in here.” And the gorilla says, “At nineteen dollars a drink I’m not surprised.”

Give the birds in your backyard a treat this Christmas and throughout the winter season with Safflower seeds. Cardinals, these bright and beautiful birds absolutely love safflower seeds. Their shell is a bit difficult to break open but cardinals, grosbeaks, chickadees and doves manage just fine. They are also less appealing to squirrels, starlings and house sparrows!

On Dec. 28, BBBS received a great last minute gift for the year. The Old Car Club, headed by president Barry Cox, donated $500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters from proceeds of DQ treat sales at one of their events. NEWS

1.To start with, I must apologize for being so late with this “Dances With Words”. If it had been published before your annual commemoration of the birth of Christ, the following material would have been of use to you. If it had been in print before January 7, those who celebrate Ukrainian Christmas on that day could have used what you are about to read as entertainment, following the serving of your kutia, borscht, vushka, varenyky and holubtsi. (My mom used to prepare all of those dishes for us.) 2.Regardless, here it is. File it for use during your Christmas 2017 gathering. 3.Here’s what we did on Christmas Day 2016. We listened to “The 12 days of Christmas. Then, referring to a hard copy of the lyrics, we tried to estimate the current cost of each of the gifts, one by one. 4.Here are some examples of our calculations. The partridge in a pear tree would have cost only $7.00, but the transplanted pear tree it was sitting in would be about $500, plus $200 for the pot, for a total of $707.00. The seven swans a-swimming came in at $100 each, but the wading pool for them to swim in was $79.99 (off-season, on special). Total: $179.99. There would be considerable research costs entailed to locate the “Ten Lords a Leaping”. In Canada, we are very short of lords. My research informed me of the following Canadian Lords:

Dorchester (a street in Montreal, originally named Dorchester Boulevard, but in 1987 revisionists renamed it Rene Levesque Boulevard), Aylmer (municipalities in Quebec and Ontario), Sydenham (a river flowing into Lake St. Clair), Lisgar (as in a Toronto collegiate), Stanley (a wonderful park in Vancouver), Byng (the gentleman’s hockey trophy) and Tweedsmuir (commonly used place name in B.C.). Since all of the lords I’ve listed are dead, they could no longer do any leaping. We’d have to settle for any ten guys who could do some leaping for us. There was a lot of discussion about the eleven pipers piping. I nixed the idea of them being bagpipers, so we settled for much less irritating regular pipers. After considerable discussion we arrived at a $17.30 per hour rate for them, but felt that they should play for only two hours, at a cost of $380.60. The nine ladies dancing claimed that dancing for those same two hours would have been quite strenuous. Therefore, they demanded a higher pay scale. However, one member of our gathering, a male chauvinist pig, wanted their hourly rate to be less, as they were ‘just females’. But then, the women’s lib brigade rose to their feet and managed to get an hourly rate of $20.30 for the ladies. The eight maids a-milking introduced a completely different problem. In the “Twelve Days of Christmas” there were no cows for them to milk, so they were given a severance package of $750 each. We came up with a total twelve item cost of $4,853.24. Give this exercise a try next year.
