Starbucks supports hospital in Grand Opening Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Although the first Starbucks in Cornwall has been serving customers for a few weeks, they held their official grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 14. As a part of the day’s celebration and to show their appreciation to their customers, the Seattle based coffeehouse chain at 1232 Brookdale Avenue offered free beverages with any complimentary cash donation to the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation and the Community Addiction and Mental Health Centre between 9 a.m. and noon. The Store Manager of the newest Starbucks, Dan White was pleased with the turnout. He said, “I’m amazed at the number of people who have come in and embraced our brand.” Deryk Heroux the District Manager said Cornwall had expressed an interest in having a Starbucks for some time. He said Cornwall has been very welcoming. “We’re very excited to be

here,” he said. Along with give-aways for the first 100 customers after 9 am, free cake was offered to the patrons and live entertainment was provided by local musician Nathalie Desrosiers. Tracy McLellan and her daughter Sarah were two of the many customers who came to Starbucks this morning. Tracy said, “We came to check out the new Starbucks in Town.” She explained she and Sarah often look for a place to stop for a drink and a snack Saturday mornings to recharge their batteries between soccer and swimming. White explained the set up in the café included a “Community Table” which encouraged groups to gather, while using their laptops, and connect to the free Wi-Fi. He also pointed out the cozy “Conversation Area” in front of the fireplace. White said he is looking forward to the spring when they can create the patio outside with even more seating. He said, “Starbucks is the place to meet. That’s what we strive for.”

Cornwall Hospital at 138 percent capacity Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - In a press release to the media on Friday, the Cornwall Community Hospital announced that they were currently sitting at 138 percent capacity. The hospital cited an increase in Emergency Room visits, doctor’s offices being closed for the holidays and the Cornwall area being hit hard by gastroenteritis, influenza and pneumonia. The hospital said that patients are still being accepted despite the overflow. “To accommodate this overflow, patients are

being admitted to the hallway, in off service units, others are being transferred and as a last resort, some surgeries may be postponed,” the CCH press release reads. The hospital is recommending the following steps to the public to help deal with the increased patient intake. - Avoid visiting loved ones in the hospital if feeling unwell. - Keep the Emergency Department for true emergencies. Symptoms of the flu or gastro are manageable at home with plenty of rest, liquid and over the counter medication. (Unless complications arise or symptoms are severe.)

- Respecting other patients who require the bed by ensuring timely transportation when patients are discharged. The acute care wing of the hospital has been at over 100 percent capacity for over six weeks with extra beds opening daily. This week the acute care wing reached its peak with 50 additional beds added. “The strain on our resources, both financial and human, is significant,” declares Jeanette Despatie Chief Executive Officer. “We are fortunate to have staff across the entire hospital working extra shifts and hours to ensure patient needs are met.”

New programs on the move at Beyond 21

Ontario - With the New Year, Beyond 21 is busy developing exciting new programs and events to help developmentally disabled adults better integrate into the community. One such program will pair Beyond 21 participants with volunteers from the community, much in the style of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. The program will help create connections between the participants of Beyond 21 and the greater community. “We want to be a hub for the developmentally disabled,” said Beyond 21 Executive

Director Jane McLaren. “What we don’t want to be is an isolated centre from the outside world.” Beyond 21 is also in the process of developing workshops and learning materials to help the developmentally disabled with things like dealing with the police, cyber bullying, and having safe and positive relationships. Learn more about these programs and all of the events that Beyond 21 has planned at http://www.cornwallseawaynews.com/community/2017/1/11/new-programs-on-themove-at-beyond-21.html.

Cornwall business gets the Holmes stamp of approval CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall business has received the stamp of approval from legendary Canadian home builder Mike Holmes. The Menard Bros. & Associates are now a HOLMES Approved Homes Partner Builder. The recognition means that they are building homes to the Mike Holmes standard. “We take great pride in the way we build

homes. It’s a 60-year family tradition,” says Guy Menard, President of Menard Bros.. “That’s why we’re very honoured and grateful to be recognised by Mike Holmes as a trusted builder who cares and ‘does things right the first time.’” HOLMES Approved Homes is a project that Mike Holmes launched in 2011 to create a standard of quality and a certification program for home building in North America.

“I’m always getting emails from people who want me to build their home,” says Holmes. “The truth is they just want a home built right. This program is about that—building safer, healthier homes built right the first time. And we do this by partnering with builders who care about building better, so they get my guys to come in and inspect their homes as they go up.” These homes go under a stage-by-stage inspection process to assure that quality is

maintained at every level. “Building beyond code has always been a way of life for us, which explains why this partnership is a perfect fit,” added Guy Menard. “From the beginning, we understood that some minimum building codes are just that – minimum – and we’ve exceeded them to create higher durability and superior performance. Third-party verification adds to new homeowners’ peace of mind, both now and whenever they choose to sell their home.”

Princesses and Princes on show at Kinette’s Princess Ball Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Hear ye! Hear ye! The Royal Court was in town during the afternoon of Sunday, January 15, and it was jam packed with princesses, princes, Ladies, and Knights, all raising money for a good cause. The 3rd Annual Cornwall Kinette’s Princess Ball took place at the Civic Complex to raise money for cystic fribrosis and Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG. “It was a magical idea that we came across... It’s an excellent chance to raise funds for cystic fibrosis and the Boys and Girls Club here in Cornwall,” said lead organizer Lynn Riviere. “It’s a sold out event, it sells out every year. We have

Queen Elsa and Princess Anna showing up later as well, from Dream Birthdays.” Thanks to the tireless work of 50 volunteers completing approximately 1,500 man hours, this year the event managed to raise $6,000, and also saw more Kings, Princes, and other male participants than in previous years. “We’ve been coming since the beginning. My daughter has been watching this stuff since she was a kid. The first year there wasn’t a lot of fathers, so this is incredible. “We look forward to this every year,” said returning ‘King’ Daniel Brisebois. “It’s the one day of the year where I make sure it’s all about her. It gives us an opportunity to live as royals.

It’s their day, nothing else matters.” The young royals were entertained throughout the day, with various princess characters, from many of their favourite films, on hand. The children also managed to make a pumpkin turn into a carriage where they were able to have their photos taken. The young princesses Tenly and Taytum MacKinnon, and Stella Desjardins were holding royal court at the Civic Complex for the third annual Kinettes Princess Ball to raise money for cystic fibrosis and the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall (Marc Benoit/ SeawaY News).

OPINION

Talking taxes Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Citizens of Cornwall must have a say in this year’s budget process, one which will likely see significant cuts to City services. However, these discussions have to be based on informed discussions of real numbers and I feel that many residents will need to be shown what is really at stake this year. The City of Cornwall is facing a perfect storm that has made budget season more turbulent than usual. Looking at a potential rise in residential property taxes of 4.11 percent, or $92 per household, councillors have raised serious questions about the City’s immediate and longterm financial future, but there are no solid answers in sight. Questions before council include whether to pass the tax burden onto the rate payers, offset it by “borrowing” from reserves or to make cuts to services and whether those cuts should be permanent or temporary. At the last meeting of the Budget Committee, Councillor Bernadette Clement suggested that in depth consultations be held with the public on the budget and on cuts to service (which is the most likely outcome of this process).

As stated, I believe that this is something that must happen. If taxes are raised without input from the citizens who are paying them, then they will have every right to be upset and the same is true if cuts to services are to be made to offset that tax increase. I know that when it comes to money that every single person in the City is interested in how their money spent on some level. How much the general populace is interested in the workings of the budget is another matter. The metric I use to measure public interest in a story is based on the feedback I get on Facebook. I take into account other sources of feedback as well, but instead of a letter or two to the editor I get every week, Facebook shows me hundreds of comments on stories that Seaway News publishes. For example you, the readers, are very interested in the issue of possible school closures. Every story published on school closures gets commented on with criticism of the school board or possible solutions to the problem. When it comes to the ongoing City budget meetings however, the response has been almost crickets. In fact, there has been almost no reaction whatsoever from the readership to

the news about the steep residential tax increase this City is facing. Again, I doubt the readership is uninterested so much as unsurprised. Whether it be at the federal, provincial or municipal level, the ongoing narrative has been about increasing expenses and rising taxes. The jump in property taxes this year stems more from the assessments of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation rather than

any drastic increase in spending from the City. Regardless of where the blame for the tax increase can be laid, it will take cooperation from as many people in this city as feasible to soften the blow as much as possible. However, if the City wants to be an equal partner with the taxpayers of Cornwall in the formulation of this budget, it will have to make a genuine effort to get them interested and informed to get real and valuable input.

border and will also have a significant economic impact on both the United States and Canada. Unions are in favor of the project because it will create many much-needed jobs. This project will move western oil and encourage the oil sands industry. For Canada’s western provinces, this is the most important project ever created to create wealth and prosperity. The pipeline will transport 830,000 barrels of heavy oil from the oil sands and from shale oil fields in Montana and North Dakota to Gulf Coast heavy oil refineries in Texas. The main argument against this project is the pipe line will allow oil sands to expand and destroy the environment. However, on the other hand, many argue the pipe line is good for both countries.

Athabasca. But, Fonda stressed her love for the Alberta workers who “go where the money is to feed their families,” and reassured them that they could all find new work in alternative energy. President Barack Obama initially showed some interest in approving the pipeline but changed his mind as opposition to it grew. The oil sands project is important to Canada. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apparently favors the 1,900-kilometre pipeline. The pipeline has been discussed for nearly eight years at a considerable cost. Many Republicans are in favor of the pipeline. The Keystone is a $7-billion project. It will create a lot of jobs on both sides of the

Oscar winning actress Jane Fonda told Albertans that oil is bad and they should get other jobs. Her message was not well received by many Albertans who are currently going through hard times because of the current oil crisis. The visit by the American actress, fashion model and the political activist to Fort McMurray comes at a questionable time. United States President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated Jan. 20, has indicated interest and support in the Canadian Keystone XL pipeline. After a helicopter tour of Alberta’s oil sands region, the long time activist met with indigenous leaders and staunch environmentalist.

Fonda is an outspoken critic of the oil and gas industry. The open-pit bitumen mines fuel the oil sands industry and pump billions of dollars each year into the Alberta economy. “It’s like someone took my skin and peeled it off my body over a very large surface,” Fonda said. “It made my body ache to watch it.” The Fonda visit came soon after a massive wildfire forced about 90,000 residents to leave the city and surrounding communities. A pro oil sands group spokesman said Fonda was kicking them while they are down. Fonda was in Alberta at the invitation of Greenpeace. Jason Kenney, a Progressive Conservative leadership candidate, noted on Twitter that Fonda’s Beverly Hills home sits atop an active oil field producing “dirtier” oil than much of

OPINION shoulder. As a school kid in the 1940s Art often played in the LaFayette Hotel stable yard across the street from the feed store/mill. He remembers farmers who arrived at the mill with horsepulled sleighs to get their wheat ground into flour. Some would slip over to the hotel for a brew or two. On occasion a horse trotted homeward with the bags of ground flour and the farmer curled up on the wagon and covered by a buffalo blanket. Art also recalls Acheson Lumber works at Gloucester and Second streets. ... Another reader recalls the old First Street East hotel and the stable at the back where patrons would keep their horses while inside. One man made his way home with his horse and wagon. Next morning his wife asked about the “new” horse in the barn. He came home with the wrong horse. THIS AND THAT If that taxpayer-funded political plum called lieutenant-governor is so important for the province, why is that 99.9% of Ontario residents couldn’t name the current holder of the office? ... According to a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) television commercial aired the other night, persons suspected of operating a boat while drunk should be reported to the police. In minus 20C weather a better idea might be to call the guys with the strait jackets. ... Sgt. Georges Levere has pulled the plug (aka retirement) on a 33-year career with Cornwall Community Police Service. ... Can’t imagine this passing the political correctness test today, but in the mid-1950s an African American doo-wop vocal group out of Philadelphia was called the Turbans. The four

members wore turbans. The group had some modest success with a few tunes, the biggest hit - 1955 - was “When You Dance”. It reached No. 3 on the R and B charts and No. 33 on the pop charts. AROUND AND ABOUT Veteran city editor Len Hooper latest cost-cutting casualty at the Standard-Freeholder. He has taken a voluntary buyout. He’s finished on Jan. 27. That brings the newsroom down to five (managing editor, sports editor, sports writer/general assignment reporter and two general assignment reporters). The overall staff count is down to 11. In the early 1990s, the newsroom had 20 bodies. Hard to see the paper remaining a six-day print operation. Few years back Sun Media considered cutting out the Monday edition and replacing it with the Monday Ottawa Sun. TRIVIA ANSWER Dr. Arthur Battista, a Cornwall Collegiate and Vocation School graduate, was a New York City neurosurgeon. He left $1 million to the collegiate. Since 1998 Arthur and Anna Battista scholarships of $4,000 and $3,000 have been given to graduates. TRIVIA History was made in the Dec. 9, 1946 Cornwall municipal election. What was the milestone - 1) Election of the city’s first Jewish mayor, 2) First woman elected to city council, 3) Voters approved annexation of parts of Cornwall Township, 4) Ward system was eliminated, 5) Volunteer fire brigade was replaced with full-time department. AND ONE LAST THING Chap sez, “So when is this ‘old enough to know better’ supposed to kick in?”

The legal maxim that justice delayed is justice denied has been kicking around since the late 1800s. It was coined by British prime minister and statesman William Gladstone. Martin Luther King, while sitting in a Selma slammer, adjusted it to read, “Justice too long delayed is justice denied.” In today’s world of justice, at least in Ontario, the system lumbers along at a much slower clip than in Gladstone’s day. Back in 1962, Cornwall lawyer Stanley Fennell, who was president of the Canadian Bar Association, told The Canadian Press that something needed to be done to expedite court proceedings. He called for more court rooms and additional judges to get the system moving at a faster clip. He also urged the appointment of judges on ability and experience rather than political affiliation. Fennell was talking at a time when it took about a year to bring a person charged with a serious crime, such as murder, to trial. In October, 1953 Peter Balcombe was charged with murder. Five months later he was found guilty. On May 25, 1954, after an appeal was rejected, he became the last person hanged in Cornwall. Today, you can’t get a simple robbery trial up and running within a year. There are at least two fraud cases on the Cornwall court docket that are more than two years old and have yet to go

to trial. Last summer one was give a trial date of October 2017. There is no trial date for the other. It could take another year. Not long ago in Ottawa the public was shocked to learn that since it had taken four years to bring a man charged with murder to trial, the judge tossed the case. His lawyer actually lamented that his client didn’t have the “opportunity” to clear his name with a speedy trial. Ya, sure. The judge, in throwing out the case, was concerned that the man’s right to a speedy trial were violated. She glossed over the rights of the victim’s family to see justice served. Sadly, too many cases victims become the forgotten party in the stampede to protect the rights of the accused. This week in Ottawa the trial for a man charged with murder 32 months ago got under way. His lawyer tried to throw a legal hail Mary pass. He asked the judge to dump the case because it had taken too long to reach trial and thus his clients rights were violated. Nice try. Not all that long ago, a delay of several months was considered slow. Today a two-year delay is not unusual. In fact, under new guidelines aimed at “speeding up” the process, a twoyear delay is acceptable. Gladstone would not be impressed. Neither would Stanley Fennell. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Art Buckland shares some memories of Atkinson’s feed store on First Street East. He recalls Audy Atkinson, one of two brothers who ran the place, carrying 100-pound bags of grain on his

LONG SAULT, Ontario - The students at Longue Sault Public School have taken remembrance a lot further than just Remembrance Day. Principal Kieran Kennedy has pledged to make Remembrance Day everyday at his school this year, he told Seaway News. “I think as a country we owe the greatest debt to the sacrifice these men and women and their families have made in protecting democracy,” he said. “When you do a project like this you can see the kids have a heightened awareness about it. Children are our future and if we

instill these values in them now, then they won’t take them for granted in the future.” A part of this awareness came from learning about the artwork of David Sopha. A former truck driver, Sopha became an artist after suffering in a terrible traffic accident. In 2008 he began a project to honour fallen Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan by creating portraits of each one called the Portraits of Honour. Those portraits have toured Canada and copies were given to the students at Longue Sault P.S. The students got to study the portraits and the fallen soldiers in them. They learned about their families, regiments and service to Canada.

The Legion Dons their inner Italian for MS fundraiser Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Viva Italia! The smell of marinara, complete with basil, garlic, and other classic Italian flavours filled the air, and people’s stomachs, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 on Second St. W. the night of Friday, January 13, and it was all for a good cause. Despite falling shy of their ticket sales goal, the annual MS Italian Night fundraiser, returning for its 15th year in a row, packed the house once again, requiring the use of an overflow room to feed everyone in attendance. “The Italian Night started as a spaghetti night many years ago...It just keeps getting better. Rumour has it this might be the last one, but

we’ll see,” said organizer Karen Torrie-Racine. Entertainment for the evening included the rare performance of the Kealy-Greer band, featuring David Kalil, Tyler Kealy, and Graham Greer, who only play together for this event. “We are always thankful to our sponsors for making tonight happen,” said Torrie-Racine. The evening is sponsored by Roy Perkins and Perkins Rona, Cornwall City-Press, The Sign Factory, Casa Paolo, Scotiabank, The Royal Canadian Legion and TC Media. “We’d also like to add a shout out to Rick Shaver, who we miss very much,” said Torrie-Racine. Guests were served a full course meal with spaghetti, cannelloni, garlic bread, salad, and more. Proceeds for the evening go directly to support the MS Society of Canada.

Serving up Italian cuisine for a great cause, Claude Clement, Roy Perkins, Karen Torrie-Racine, Thom Racine, Vanessa Regnier, and Shannon Hardy volunteer to make the MS Italian night a success. (Marc Benoit/ Seaway News).

Ministry funding for Glen Stor Dun Lodge cut Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - City of Cornwall Chief Financial Officer Tracey Bailey explained to council that the City’s seniors home Glen Stor Dun Lodge would be receiving less money from the provincial government this year. The Ministry of Health will be reducing Glen Stor Dun Lodge’s funding by $42,000. The Ministry of Health reduction means that the

City of Cornwall will have to make up the difference in their budget in order to meet the Lodge’s needs. The $42,000 increase will be felt by Cornwall’s residential property tax payers. As it stands now, the Residential Property Tax rate is set to increase by 4.11% or $92 per household. Councillor Andre Rivette slammed the Province for taking funding away from some of the community’s most vulnerable members.

“We’re not getting enough money for the Lodge for our community,” he said. “Those residents are past pillars of our community. Someone needs to sit down with the ministry and say “What do you need to hear to give us the money we need.” They are not giving us the money we need to maintain our seniors.” Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy agreed with Councillor Rivette’s idea of taking the case back to the Province. He suggested that he, CAO Maureen Adams and other Council

members meet with the area’s Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). LHINs are Provincial organizations responsible for dispersing funding for healthcare at the local level. Councillor Claude McIntosh warned that petitioning the LHINs might fall on deaf ears. “The LHINs are being squeezed from the top,” he said. “The Province is basically broke. They basically need to cut millions and this is only the beginning.”

These lists can be both inspiring and overwhelming. They’re great tools to make you aware of titles that are out there, but where do you start? And how do you keep up? Don’t worry – there are no rules to using these lists! The great thing about these lists are that they not only provide you with suggestions of what to read, but they can also act as a reminder of a title that you’d meant to read. There are lists available on just about any topic – once you find the perfect source for your tastes, you can keep going back year after year. And, while it might be nice to finish an entire reading list, it is certainly not necessary. Whether you subscribe to reading lists, participate in book challenges or just choose your next read on a whim – we hope your 2017 is filled with plenty of good reads and armchair adventures. Check out the“Next Reads”section of our website (http://www.sdglibrary.ca/next-reads) or speak to any Library staff for some of our favourite reading list providers. Pet Tip of the Week: During the cold winter months, most Canadians retreat to the warm comfort of their homes. Wildlife is no different. They, too, need shelter from the cold northern winds. One way you can help backyard wildlife through the winter is by building a brush pile. Build brush piles out of woody debris, such as branches and clippings from pruned shrubs and trees. These protective shelters will help many birds and other animals through the long, cold winter and serve as summer nesting sites for small mammals and invertebrates. Also, setting up and maintaining a bird feeder is a kind act that will help our feathered friends who stay behind with us enjoying a Canadian winter. Just make sure that the feeder is located in a safe place, preferably where there is some shelter, but where cats and other animals cannot easily prey on the birds while they are feeding.

Way to go to the students at Glengarry District High School for raising $2, 000 for their school and Scotiabank’s Alexandria Branch matched the funding they raised. Did you know the Commonwell Mutual Insurance was behind this past Tuesday’s Day of Common Kindness? They donated money to local businesses around the Province to allow those businesses to give away items like coffee for free, with the hope that customers would pay it forward. The Grind in Cornwall and the Quirky Carrot in Alexandria both were giving out free coffees for the Day of Common Kindness. Did you get one? Did you pay it forward? The Martintown Chili Cookoff is coming up on January 28. What’s your favourite Chili recipe.

Bob was sitting on the plane waiting to fly to Chicago , when a guy took the seat beside him. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking in fear. “What’s the matter, afraid of flying?” Bob asked. “No, it’s not that. I’ve been transferred to Chicago. The people are crazy there, right? Lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor schools, and the highest crime rate in the nation.” Bob replied, “I’ve lived in Chicago all my life. It’s not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, and enroll your kids in a nice private school. I’ve worked there for 14 years and never had the slightest trouble.” The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, “Oh, thank you. I’ve been worried to death, but if you’ve lived and worked there all those years and say it’s OK, I’ll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?” “I’m a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck.”
