Hockey in Williamstown for a good cause Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Two local young men from Williamstown are organizing a charity hockey tournament on Family Day in support of the Julie MacLachlan Foundation. Colton Gallant and Allister McDonell are organizing a 3v3 hockey tournament at the outdoor rink in Williamstown. The event will be starting at 8 a.m. on Feb. 18 and they are hoping to get around 15 teams to participate.

It costs $140 per team to sign up and there will be entertainment and hot chocolate provided throughout the event. The Country Lads will be on-site that day to play some music while the teams battle it out and there will be a cash bar to celebrate when the dust has settled on the ice. The Julie MacLachlan Foundation works in memory of its name sake to provide funds where ever they are needed in the community. Julie MacLachlan was a Char-Lan DHS student who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2005.

It has been just over a year since Cornwall’s Syrian Refugee Task Force was established in response to refugees expected to make Cornwall their home in early 2016. With President Trump’s recent refugee and immigration ban, there has been a renewed interest in local refugee causes, with many Cornwall residents curious about the status of the task force, and what they can do to help. There has been a renewed interest in the Cornwall’s Syrian Refugee Task Force, which went dormant last year. Councillor Bernadette Clement discusses the ways the community can get involved in the effort.

president of CUPE 4155. “But after 12 bargaining dates and the impasse we reached yesterday in negotiations - even working with conciliators - we realized that, unfortunately, the time had come to take job action, up and including a full strike.”

Second race added to annual Summerstown Snowshow Race

Brennan Markell’s 17th goal of the season was the overtime winner as the Colts beat the Raiders 3-2 in overtime in Nepean. It’s the Colts fourth straight victory and vaults them in a tie for second overall in the CCHL standings at 32-13-2-3 (69 pts).

Members of CUPE 4155 announced that they were on strike as of the morning of Tuesday, February 7. The union represents janitors, librarian and IT technicians, support staff and administrators and has about 250 members. “We have been extremely patient with our employer, so that we could avoid just such a labour dispute,” said Raymond Giroux,

The snow has finally arrived, and just in time for the annual Summerstown Forest Dion Snowshoe Race will be held on Saturday, February 11, at 10 a.m. Last year, the race had to be cancelled due to the bad snow conditions that prevailed all winter long, but that will not be the case this year with Mother Nature finally coming through.

White Swan Linen forced to close Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario - Community Living Glengarry has announced that they have closed White Swan Linen due to financial reasons. In a press release, Community Living Glengarry said that the decision was made inline with guidlines issued from the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS). White Swan Linen will wind down between now and March 12. During that time, all participants and those who rely on the program will be slowly transferred over to the Meaningful Days Program. Currently, there are 30 individuals who participate in the White Swan Linen program. “Please be assured that the level of service and the same number of hours and days that are currently in place will remain the same, delivered through the Community Living Glengarry’s Meaningful Days ,” reads Community Living

Glengarry’s press release. The closing of White Swan Linen is also affecting employees of the program. There are 12 labourers who were issued notices of layoff on Jan. 23 and whose last day of work will be March 12. Three Full Time Support Workers will be reassigned to the Meaningful Days program and four Casual Support Workers have been notifed that there will be no-more casual hours available as of March 12. “Community Living Glengarry sincerely regrets the necessity of this closure and wishes to effect this transition as seamlessly and supportively as possible for our persons supported, their families and for our employees,” the press release reads. North Stormont raises funds for refugees

8 - Thursday, February 9, 2017 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - In hopes of providing a better tomorrow for one refugee family, the North Stormont Refugees Coalition continues to raise funds for the family’s resettlement process. With paperwork now in order, another $15,000 is needed to complete the proceedings. The Almunif family were bombed out of their village of Diraa, Syria and fled to the Lebanese village of Aroon in 2011. The family have since been living in a garage just below the Bekaa Valley on the Syrian border. Finch resident, Daad Elsaadi played a critical role in targeting the Almunif family for resettlement. While Elsaadi was finishing her studies in Lebanon, she approached one of her professors about families who would be well-suited for sponsorship. The father, who worked as a custodian at the college, and his family came highly recommended by the institution. “Because we had that contact, we could get the lines of communication open right away and move forward with the forms much more

quickly, ” said group chair, Janice Wright. “The PHARMACY PHARMACIE most difficult part of the entire process is the government forms. Identifying the family is the easy part – the Canadian government really puts the onus the group to choose a family.” North Stormont hopes to welcome the Almunif family in the fall of 2017, but Wright says she expects a lengthier process. “It’s a long, slow process,” said Wright. “From what we’ve been told, once the paperwork is submitted, the absolute minimum, best-casescenario is eight months.” Wright says what’s most frustrating about the paperwork is that it is not geared toward rural communities. Sponsors are required to submit a settlement plan, outlining budgetary needs like rent, hydro, and public transportation. “What becomes problematic is that rural areas don’t have public transportation,” said Wright. “So, we have to factor in things like purchasing a car, getting drivers licences, paying for insurance, and gas. Those things don’t fit in a form that assumes that everyone’s going to be settled in a city that has public transportation.”

The North Stormont Refugee Coalition continues to raise funds for a refugee family’s resettlement. Transportation is likely to be the biggest hurdle that the group will face once the family arrives, and Wright says although the community has been extremely supportive in offering to assist with driving in the first months, they are conscious that the commitment to the family is one year. In continuing with the group’s effort to raise funds, they will be hosting a traditional Lebanese 7-course-dinner, which Elsaadi and

her family will be catering, already expected to draw two hundred guests. “Two hundred people is a lot,” said Elsaadi. “But if we can help a family in need, why wouldn’t we?” The fundraiser will be March 4 in the Finch community hall starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Rona Home Centre on Marleau and Re/Max Cornwall Realty on Second Street East.

1,000 ways to say

The true origin of Valentine’s D ay is somewhat mysterious, but historians generally agree that the observance owes its name to S aint Valentine of Terni, a t hird-century R oman priest and martyr. Legend has it that under the reign of the emperor at the time, Claudius II (or Claudius Gothicus), soldiers were forced to take a vow of celibacy.

The emperor believed that this would discourage his men from leaving the army’s ranks. Valentine of Terni, a true defender of love, decided to go against this order by officiating clandestine weddings for the soldiers. As the story goes, his subterfuge was eve tually discovered and the daring priest was arrested and executed for his so-called crimes on F ebruary 14. It’s only around the year 495 that Valentine’s D ay was made official through a papal edict intended to honour the patron saint of love.

The oldest surviving valentine is said to have been penned by Charles, Duke of Orleans, in 1415. The missive—a love poem destined to his wife—was written while the young duke was imprisoned in the Tower of London after being captured at the Battle of Agincourt.

Paying it forward by celebrating life and the community Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local funeral home Lahaie & Sullivan are always impressed by the generosity and support of the community in Cornwall and SD&G and they have decided on a new way they can pay it forward. The idea sprung from Lahaie & Sullivan’s recent effort to deliver more personalization to their services. Lahaie & Sullivan consult with families to try and add a personal touch and show the departed’s personality at funeral services. This can be as simple as adding Christmas decorations to their hall in honour of someone who loved Christmas, to more complex

endeavours such as restoring a beloved tractor and wagon to serve as the carriage for the ride to the internment site. Some of these personalization efforts are undertaken by Lahaie & Sullivan, some are done by the family, but some require outside help. In the case of one young gentleman, his company Cornwall Gravel provided the dump truck he always drove to be on-site for a part of the service at Lahaie & Sullivan. “These things take time and money but they make all the difference for a grieving family,” said Lahaie and Sullivan’s Lori Hollingsworth. “It takes a community to support a family that’s grieving,” added Laurie Sullivan-Kennedy, Lahaie & Sullivan’s Family Services Counsellor.

To give back to the community and recognize the generosity of the people in it, Lahaie & Sullivan has started their Pay it Forward program. For the past month, they’ve been asking residents to nominate people that they know who are deserving of recognition. These unsung heroes could be the people who drive cancer patients to their appointments, help senior citizens at the store, go the extra mile for the kids in their neighbourhood or many others. Each month Lahaie and Sullivan will pick one of these deserving nominees to receive a gift and recognition in the Seaway News. Nominations can be sent to info@lahaiesullivan.com or can be dropped off at their offices at 614 First Street East or 20 Seventh Street West.

OPINION

Can’t afford Valentine’s Day Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Nowadays, everything is commercialized. Anything and everything is being exploited to make money and it is no secret that religious holidays have all been transformed into different reasons to shop. More than anything, each have become holidays for a different industry more than for real people. Christmas is for toy manufacturers, Mother’s & Father’s Days are for card makers, St. Patrick’s Day is for brewers and whiskey distillers and Valentine’s Day is for chocolate, flowers and restaurants. These all were once occasions where everyone was given a break from their daily lives to take time to reflect, whether that be on their relationship with their parents, the past year, or the good deeds they could have done for their fellow man. Valentine’s Day however, I feel has held up the worst when one looks at its stated

purpose against the reality of the occasion. The modern reason we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day is to show the significant other in our lives how much we love them, but we don’t necessarily need to spend a lot of money to do that. However, Valentine’s Day has become a huge marketing day. Singles rejoice on February 15 when chocolate reaches discount prices. Flower shops and restaurants see their busiest day of the year. The traditions of Valentine’s Day are buying chocolate, cards, flowers, going out for dinner and spending all of the money that goes with it. Why do it though? Why go to that expense? Valentine’s Day is not more or less special based on the amount of money spent. There are plenty of great Valentine’s Day ideas that do not cost a lot of money. Skating at the Benson Centre can be romantic and cheap, walking through

Lamoureux Park as it is all lit up and decorated for Canada’s 150th anniversary and grabbing some hot chocolate is another great idea. Above all what makes for a lovely Valentine’s Day is showing your significant other that you are interested in them, so maybe do something

that interests both of you. If you both like sitting on the couch maybe that’s a better idea than skating. Valentine’s Day shouldn’t and doesn’t need an expensive price tag and reader, I hope for your sake that your significant other feels the same way.

Emerging opportunities in the work world Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words As described in last week’s column, most in the following trades and professions have become redundant and are collecting pogey: ‘caboosers’, airline flight engineers and navigators; bank tellers; service clerks; cinema and theatre ushers; newspaper spellcheckers; gas station attendants; porters at airport terminals and train stations. Professionals are fast being replaced by citizen journalists, whose wobbly camera work and sketchy research provide us with what the White House dubs “alternative facts”. However, there are many new and emerging

We’ll soon need more tree planters to reforest and remediate the environmental degradation caused by over-enthusiastic land clearing. As soon as industrial arts classes return to our schools we’ll need instructors to teach today’s digital generation of students what the terms ‘counter-clockwise’ and ‘right-tighty’ mean. Will the up-coming generation of combat pilots know how to react when the group leader shouts, “Bandits at three o’clock”? Grammar teachers will have challenging jobs explaining why emojis aren’t acceptable in resumes and job applications. “Where would I find a 3/4 inch synthetic rubber 5 cm diameter bushing?” I’ve noticed that the clerks at Canadian Tire and Home Depot can

respond immediately, with something like, “That’ll be in aisle 37, right hand side, near the middle of the bottom shelf.” Whoever trained them should be given a leadership position on NASA’s program to get an astronaut on one of Alpha Centauri’s planets. Yes, new job opportunities do exist. I’m sure you’ve noticed that handles on tooth brushes and razors are constantly being improved, machined to exacting ergonomic standards? It is in the vast R&D departments of our major industries that former porters, cinema ushers, switchboard operators and stenographers now toil, 24/7, three shifts per day - except Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Bananas, oranges, apples and kumquats used to be sold naked. These days they come fully dressed with bar codes and brand names. Sticker-applying is now a growth industry. There will soon be line-ups at the offices of insurance adjusters to deal with claims involving ‘self-driving’ cars. More jobs. There must be a great demand for lawyers to negotiate diesel emission claims with VW owners and the government for the boys in the Wolfsburg head office of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.

OPINION

Pricey policing taxpayers). It isn’t outrageous to suggest that the recent “friendly” contract talks between the board and association which produced (sans arbitration) a five-year contract, one which could end with the cops paid a lot less than their friends next door at the fire department, was the result of concern, by the association, with an OPP costing and possible take-over. (Disclosure - I have a son who is a member of the Cornwall Police Association.) HERE AND THERE: Okay, who is going to be the first member of a championship team to refuse the traditional visit to the White House? ... The Trudeau government’s economic advisory panel wants to keep (ordinary) Canadians working longer by raising the age of eligibility for Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Plan. Hey, with cap and trade and skyrocketing Hydro One bills, Preem Kathy is doing just that. ... Gary Sutton, who played basketball for the St. Lawrence Saints back in the 1960s, passed away recently in British Columbia, where he lived. TRIVIA ANSWER: Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Premier William Davis took part in the official opening of the Cornwall Civic Complex in October 1976. The facility was built with infrastructure money provided by the federal and provincial governments. TRIVIA: In 1997 Canada Post issued a stamp in honour of this Cornwall native who was first elected to the House of Commons in 1935. He won nine federal elections. REWIND—THIS WEEK IN 1965: With Cornwall Collegiate and St. Lawrence High School facing enrolment increases in the fall that

investment. An argument could be made that the “threat” of an OPP take-over “encouraged” the municipal force to come up with thousands of dollars in savings which produced a $200,000 surplus in 2014, several months after the OPP process started. The big saving came in reduced overtime. In fact, the force will spend less money (aka tax dollars) this year than it did in 2013. Sgt. Dave MacLean, president of the CCP Association, who has been following the Brockville study, called the results, which favour a local force, “good news.” “It looks good for municipal policing in general,” said MacLean. CCP board chair Andre Rivette is more blunt. “I wouldn’t support wasting time and money (on an OPP study), knowing full well their cost would not provide the services that the residents (of Cornwall) expect and receive from CCP,” he said. “(Cornwall) taxpayers receive good value for their money from one of the best community police services in Ontario.” Rivette warns that once the switch is made, there is no going back. Not everyone agrees that an OPP option study would be a waste of money and would duplicate the Brockville experience. Brad Eamer, a retired OPP sergeant who lives in the city and who has written letters to the editor urging a study, believes, in light of the Brockville situation, that putting the provincial force option under the microscope would be beneficial. In some way, just the thought of an OPP study might have produced a benefit (for local

would crowd each school with 1,800 students, the school board and city hall urged the province to approve a third high school for the city. • Ald. Norm Baril asked the provincial government to carry out a study of the city’s “chronic unemployables.” Baril, chair of the welfare committee, said at least 130 men collecting welfare had less than Grade 5 education and stood little chance of being hired by industries that demanded a minimum of Grade 10. • Martha Quail, 18-year-old CCVS student, was crowned Cornwall Campus Carnival Queen. Princesses were Helene Gosselin, St. Michael’s Academy; Audrey Fox, Holy Cross; Lise Poirier, SLHS. • Cornwall Public Library asked city council to increase its annual grant to $64,000 from $50,000. The library noted that total salaries paid by the library had increased to $50,000 from $41,186. • George Sinfield of the Lancaster Dodgers was leading scorer in the St. Lawrence Senior Hockey League with 58 points on 21 goals and 37 assists. • Residents of Grand Allee asked city council to change the name of the street to Grand Avenue. • Charles Adams was named city engineer, replacing his father. R. C. Adams, who retired. • Rev. Frank Ball resigned as pastor of St. Paul’s United Church (First and Sydney streets). He cited a rift between himself and church officials. He said the rift was exacerbated by his wife’s decision to run as an NDP candidate. • Cornwall Classical College defeated CCVS 4-2 in the winter carnival championship hockey game in front of 2,000 at the Water Street Arena. Richard Lortie, Paul Prevost, John Sauve and Guy St. Jean scored for the College. Ray Barnes beat College goalie Pierre Guindon twice.

Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings So much for trying to save money by dismantling the local municipal police force and turning the job over to the Ontario Provincial Police. It can cost more for less. At least that is what Brockville taxpayers discovered when the provincial force delivered the projected bill last month after a lengthy costing study. Proponents of a switch to the OPP calculated, perhaps on a napkin, that the shift to the provincial force would save Brockville taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Turns out, the Brockville Police Service can do the job cheaper with a larger staff. An OPP take-over would have seen most civilian and administrative staff positions - chief, deputy chief, etc. - eliminated (aka bought out). The OPP model came in at around $130,000 more for the first year than what it will cost to run the municipal force, and then there is an estimated $1 million in OPP start-up costs that include a new station. During the costing study residents learned that an OPP municipal station would not be staffed by officers overnight and on weekends. Several other services would be disconnected. Mayor David Henderson, who pushed for an OPP costing back in 2012, told the Brockville Recorder and Times that the chances of the city switching to the OPP, in light of the surprising OPP numbers, are somewhere between zero and not at all. The mayor told the newspaper that it would take the community at least 10 years, perhaps 15, to see a “substantial payback” on the OPP

Tips to clean off your car in the winter Tim Houle Auto Talk Brush the snow off everything. Powdery snow left on the body will blow down and obscure your vision; wet snow is heavy, and you’re using extra fuel to move it around. Snow and ice falling off your vehicle can affect drivers behind you, too. A good brush will clean off snow without damaging your vehicle’s paint. Start at the top by brushing off the roof, then the windows, then the hood and trunk, and finally, clean off the front and rear lights. While we don’t normally advocate leaving a car idling, starting the car and turning these on will clear window fog before you start out. They’re not intended to melt snow or ice, though: you’ll still need to get out and clean off the glass. Far too many bad drivers think it’s enough to just clean that small section of the windshield in front of the steering wheel. Don’t be one of them. You need all your glass to be clean and clear,

We try to make it possible for low mobility and high mobility seniors to participate in the same classes.” The Senior Fit program focuses on strength training, cardio training, balance training, mobility training and fall prevention. “Its a good way to get the old body going and its good fun,” said Bodo Schimidt, a 10 year Senior Fit participant. “The teachers are fabulous and they make it fun and get you going.” Not only does Senior Fit provide a venue for seniors to improve their physical health, but Senior Fit also contributes to their social and emotional health as well. “They come here because no one feels intimidated because we cater to their age group,” said instructor Pam Lamarche. “We put a lot of emphasis on getting to know our participants, the social aspect is just as critical. A lot of seniors register on their own and after a few months, they know everyone in the program. If they feel welcome they will keep coming back.” and your car to be swept free of snow, in order to be a safer driver. In most jurisdictions, it’s actually illegal to drive with your windows obscured by snow. Choose a shorter-handled ice scraper, or the one on your snow brush, depending on what’s easiest for your height and strength. You need to scrape the glass, not the ice, so work the blade under the edge of the ice sheet. Be careful around the wipers, to avoid gouging the rubber with the scraper blade.

Shar’s Tip of the Week First of all, don’t let vacuum bags or canisters get more than 3/4 full. The function of a vacuum bag or filters is to let air pass through while trapping dust and dirt. As a bag or canister fills, there’s less surface area available for air passage. It’s that air movement that creates a vacuum’s suction, so when it’s cut off or reduced, the cleaning power of a vacuum drops dramatically.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Over 1, 000 bowlers came out to support Big Brothers Big Sisters at their annual Tim Horton’s Bowl for Kids Sake event on Saturday, Feb. 4. The event took place across two venues with all the lanes available being used at both Nativity Bowl and Olympia. Over 191 different teams signed up to participate including teams from TC Media, CogecoTV and other local businesses. As of 4 p.m. Saturday, more than $16, 000 had been raised at Olympia Bowl and nearly $9, 000 at Nativity.

“This is our bread and butter for our fundraising,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Executive Director Amanda Brisson. “It brings in one-third of our budget. The money goes to our 7 mentoring programs and helps the 110 kids on our wait-list to get involved.” This year the Cornwall Colts served as hosts for the popular event. This was the first time a team served in the host position. “They are perfect for us because they already care about what we do here,” Brisson said. Additionally, as a team, they were able to be at both locations at the same time, cheering all of the bowlers on. As perennial supporters, the Cornwall Colts

The Cornwall Golf and Country Club has lost its longest-standing member, Douglas Knight, who passed away on February 4, 2017 at the age of 97. He was a member of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club since 1928 and more recently an Honorary Member. His father, Dr. W.D. Knight, was a founding member. He was instrumental in the development of the 2nd nine holes at the club in 1957 and, in 1996, he authored the 100-year Anniversary History book. Although he did not reach that golf pinnacle of club champion, he often remarked that he could have with a little more practise. He will be missed by his wife Catherine and his children (Bill, Margaret, Jennifer, and Pamela), grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

. . . (With A Groan-Er) A local policeman had just finished his shift one cold February evening and was at home with his wife. ‘You just won’t believe what happened this evening, in all my years on the force I’ve never seen anything like it.’ ‘Oh ya, really? What happened?’ she asked. ‘I came across two guys down by the canal, one of them was drinking battery acid and the other was eating fireworks.’ Shocked, she replied. ‘Drinking battery acid and eating fireworks! , what did you do with them?’ He was ready for her question…. “Oh that was easy, I charged one and let the other off!”

Congratulations to Randy Sauve on the 32nd anniversary of his shop, Fantasy Realm. Randy and the fans of Fantasy Realm celebrated the event on Saturday, February 4. Randy had a few “freebies” on offer for his long-time loyal customers and Riley’s Bakery provided some cupcakes, which Randy says went fast. “32 is sort of an odd number to celebrate,” Randy said. “But I was 23 when I founded this store, which is 32 backwards and I had a few freebies to give away, so I thought “why not celebrate.”” (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

The Kinsmen presented a cheque for $3, 000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters Cornwall at Tim Horton’s Bowling for Kids Sake at Olympia Bowl on Saturday, February 4. Was that the best or worst Super Bowl ever? I guess it depends on what you think of Tom Brady. I think I saw someone on Facebook sum it up the best “I may not like you, but damn do I respect you.” Coming back from a 25 point deficit in the 4th Quarter to win in Overtime is an impressive feat. He’s no Aaron Rodgers, but its hard to argue that he didn’t play a fantastic game.

Learn to say no to things that are not a high priority. Stop procrastinating – take action. If you believe you perform better under pressure, you may be trying to convince yourself that you do. In fact, you may be making an excuse to procrastinate. Putting things off can be stressful. Instead, take action. Make decisions and be prepared to live with the consequences.
