CORNWALL, Ontario - Shoppers got an added dose of Canadian history as the annual Heritage Fair made its way to the Cornwall Square Shopping Centre this Saturday Feb. 18. “We’ve got a few more participants this year,” said event organizer, Debbie Ledoux. With the Akwesasne Kahwatsi:re Genealogy & Historical Society and the Bishop’s House taking part for the first time, Ledoux says she is happy to see new organizations get on board with the event. In addition to the two new organizations being added to the participants list this year, other presenters included the Friends of Crysler Farm, the SD&G Historical Society, Genealogie & Archives St. Laurent, and the Ontario East British Home Child Family, to name a few. While involvement has been strong this year, Ledoux says that the mall doesn’t generate the foot traffic it once did.

“The Cornwall Square is less busy now, and without the grocery store, we don’t get that influx of people that we used to,” said Ledoux. Despite the lower number of shoppers, she says that the event welcomes many returning history patrons. Kim McInnis is a member of Friends of Crysler’s Farm Battlefield, and has been involved with the event since 2014. “It’s sort of gratifying to get to showcase Canadian history,” said McInnis. “Kids are starting to learn a little bit more about their heritage, and we like to think we’ve had a small hand in it.” “We do tend to see some of the same faces from year to year,” said Ledoux. “They like to come out and see what’s new each year.” In addition, Heritage-Patrimoine Cornwall will be giving out Heritage Awards to building owners in Cornwall as part of their contribution to Canada 150. cornwallseawaynews.com - See the full story on our website The Cornwall Innovation Centre (CIC) has found a new home and is closer to its opening day after signing a leas with the Nav Centre in January. The CIC is a result of the University Steering Committee, a partnership project with Carleton University between the City of Cornwall, The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the United Counties of SD&G.

Benson Centre expansions get cut from budget

If passed by Council, the proposed budget would see an increase to the tax rate of 2.79 percent, or $62.61 for a $161, 899 home. Originally, the City’s administration had

forecasted for the committee an increase of over 4 percent to the property tax, but that number was brought down by some considerable belt tightening, including removing $300, 000 earmarked for new soccer fields at the Benson Centre.

Friends of the River returns to winter carnival

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) extended an invitation to the public on both sides of the St. Lawrence this Sunday Feb. 12. In conjunction with the 2017 Akwesasne Winter Carnival Committee, the MCA’s Department of the Tehotiiennawakon offered a day of activities and learning demonstrations with a focus on the health of the river, which took place during this weekend’s festivities.

Paramedics introduce “at home care” initiative

Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services is launching a new initiative to try and reduce the high demand placed on hospital and ambulance resources during influenza season. Over the next several weeks, a trained team of Paramedics, in collaboration with the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), will be providing ‘at home care’ for residents of long-term care facilities in Cornwall and SDG. This initiative will focus on identifying, treating and containing the influenza virus and preventing the number of resident transfers to hospital.

Pictured are (from left) Paramedics and at home care team members Leigh Wheeler, Alex Sapone, Elisabeth Hill and Trina Boisvenue.

Cornwall native injured in Kincardine fire Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

KINCARDINE, Ontario - Derrick Comstock, a Cornwall native, was injured rescuing his son from a fire at their Kincardine home on Friday, Feb. 3. The fire occurred that afternoon and Derrick got him and his son out of the building that was eventually destroyed by the fire. A friend drove them to the local hospital. Derrick’s son, Logan, was released a short time later after being treated for smoke inhilation, but Derrick was sent to a hospital in Hamilton. From Feb.3 until Feb. 16 Derrick was in a coma suffering from third degree burns over large parts

of his body particularly his arms and legs. As stated, Derrick Comstock is from Cornwall, but moved to the Kincardine area for work a few months ago. He still has many family and friends in the area and they have started a GoFundMe page to raise money during his hospital stay to support his family. As of the time of writing this article, the GoFundMe page has raised $2, 510 of its $5, 000 goal. A link to the GoFundMe page can be found here. “He will be in the hospital months and will be undergoing multiple surgeries,” the GoFundMe page reads. “He has made it through his first surgery

very well. He has burns on his body from his head to his toe, this will be a long recovery for him. Our mother needs fund’s to allow her to stay at a hospital in Hamilton with him for the next few months. Please give up your hearts any amount will do amazing things for our family right now. Even if you can only give prayers or sent love our way to help us get through this very difficult time.” His family have said that they have received a lot of support in the Cornwall area and are planning an online silent auction to raise further funds while Derrick recovers. The auction will be on Facebook and should begin in a few days. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Cornwall named Bicycle Friendly Community Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Share the Road Cycling Coalition announced today the latest Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) awards for Ontario. Cornwall is one of several Ontario cities to earn the Bicycle Friendly status, all at the Bronze level. “Share the Road is thrilled to recognize this new group of Bicycle Friendly Communities,” said Jamie Stuckless, Executive Director of Share the Road. With more Ontario residents attesting to the benefits of investing in cycling, Stuckless says its

operation and participating communities represent a cross section of Ontario’s 444 municipalities,” says Stuckless. “There is no community too big or too small to benefit from strategic investment in the five E’s of bicycling – Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation & Planning.” Many communities who were recognized this round succeeded through the continued work of residents working hand in hand with the municipality to build a strong cycling culture. “This type of partnership demonstrates how passionate residents can initiate real change in their communities” said Stuckless.

While there’s been undeniable progress made within Ontario communities, Stuckless says that we are still in the early stages towards Ontario’s big-picture community cycling goals. “Twenty-seven of Ontario’s thirty-six BFCs are at the Bronze level and no community has yet achieved a Platinum or Diamond designation,” said Stuckless. “The conversation about building great places to cycle is underway and with the potentially transformative investment of $150225 million in cycling through Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan, we hope to see many communities move up the rankings in the near future.”

Local lawyer offers support during US travel ban Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - In the wake of President Donald Trump’s travel ban, local lawyer, Gordon Scott Campbell has recently promised to provide free legal counsel to those impacted by the ban. The ban, which was proposed last month, is expected to prevent seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for 90 days, including Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The executive order also paused refugee admissions into the US for 120 days, while completely denying entry to Syrian

Wrinkled Wanda shows the lasting impact bullying can have Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - In the month of February, the Boys & Girls Club has really focused on bullying and are using artistic ways to show its effects. On Wednesday afternoon Boys & Girls Club members gathered at General Vanier to create Wrinkled Wanda’s and Wrinkled Wyatt’s/ Wrinkled Wanda’s and Wrinkled Wyatt’s are drawings of girls and boys respectively. The Boys & Girls Club kids then added hurtful names or other hurtful things that they have been told to the picture. The Wrinkled Wandas were then crumpled up and when they were smoothed out again, all of the creases and wrinkled stayed to show that when these hurtful words are

spoken, the damage can never fully go away and the words cannot be taken back. ““Bullying affects a lot of people’s lives and sometimes you don’t see it but its there,” said 11-year-old Bailey Duval. The Boys & Girls Club’s Trevor Smith said that this exercise was useful because it was made to show the kids the damage bullying could cause. “Whenever you do something that’s hands on they tend to remember that more and there’s more of an impact on their life,” he said.

Fantastic weather for hockey fun in Williamstown Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - The Williamstown was host to a charity hockey tournament on Family Day, Monday, Feb. 20. The event saw a good turnout of people and was lucky to have some unusually sunny and warm weather.

The 3v3 tournament saw around 15 teams compete for a good cause. Each team raised at least $140 to sign up and in addition to the hockey, got to enjoy some hot chocolate, a cash bar and some local music for entertainment. All money raised is going towards the Julie MacLachlan Foundation and Scotiabank has

promised to match the money raised by the tournament. The Julie MacLachlan Foundation works in memory of its namesake to provide funds where ever they are needed. in the community. Julie MacLachlan was a Char-Lan DHS student who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2005.

Great weather for Family Day at Summerstown Trails

Summerstown Trails Handout SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - With the temperature hovering around the zero degree mark, close to 475 persons came out to enjoy the Family Day activities at the Summerstown Forest trails. Right from the start at 10 a.m., there was a rush of activity with families wanting to try out the free XC ski and snowshoe equipment. The more than 20 volunteers were kept busy throughout the day, handing out the free equipment, the free food and giving directions to those who were visiting the trails for the first time. A few statistics: 97 families took advantage of the free equipment rental, for a total of 278 people; 25 dozen of hot dogs were consumed, plus uncounted marshmallows, hot chocolate, etc. The free offer of equipment was a real draw as there were families visiting from as far away as Morrisburg and Vankleek Hill in order to try out XC skiing or snowshoeing. Nine year old Emily, visiting for the first time with her family from Morrisburg said that “the forest was really nice and that she saw a lot of weird shaped trees.” The parking lot was overflowing throughout the day, with many cars having to park on County Road 27. The addition of a new and bigger parking lot to be constructed by SDG next summer will be a welcomed improvement at the trails. This was the 6th annual Family Day at

The Phypers family from Williamstown enjoying the Summerstown Trails on Family Day. Summerstown Trails event hosted by FOTST and for many families, it is a great opportunity to experience XC skiing or snowshoeing for the first time at no cost. The event was generously supported by Cardinal & Son Wholesale Meats, and Wendy’s Restaurant on Brookdale Avenue. The trails are situated on Summerstown Road,

1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401, and are open seven days a week. There is no charge to access the trails and donations are accepted to offset the cost of maintaining the trails. Rental of equipment on weekends only. More information at www.summerstowntrails.com or on our Facebook page.

kinette Community Café at the agape Centre

Seventy-five years ago on February 23, 1942 the Kinette Club of Cornwall was chartered. Charter President Mabel Sleeman and twenty-one other members laid the path for women to serve their community’s greatest needs. Today, the club is still twenty-two members strong and is very proud of their 75 years of service in Cornwall and the wider community. The Kinette Club of Cornwall is a member of Kin Canada. Kin Canada is an allCanadian association with Kinsmen, Kinettes and Kin Clubs across Canada. The Association was founded by Hal Rogers in Hamilton, Ontario in 1920. The first service projects of the Cornwall Kinettes included preparing supper for local soldiers every two months and supplying candles, magazines, knitted sweaters and socks for local troops abroad. They also supported the national Milk for Britain campaign. In 1946 two bombed out families in England were adopted by the Kinettes; they were sent food and clothing packages for the next three years. The Cornwall Kinettes also assisted the Red Cross with blood donor clinics and helped wrap bandages. In the early 1950’s the Cornwall Kinettes started the Seniors Citizens Club in 1953 and for fifteen years hosted weekly Euchre and card games and provided lunches. The Cornwall Kinettes were instrumental in the start-up of Moreau Place, a shelter for young girls in the 1980s. In recent years the Kinette club have partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG and sponsored the 506 Clubhouse kitchen known as the Kinette Kitchen for Kids; they are also proud supporters of their Pink Shirt Day. Another partnership is with the Agape Centre where the Kinettes have supported their capital building campaign, their once snowsuit drive and also sponsored their new Kinette Community Café Kitchen. The Kinettes continue to serve meals whenever there is a fifth Saturday in the month. Another major project was their millimeum project, the Lamoureux play structure where they partnered with the Rotary Club of Cornwall/Sunrise and the City of Cornwall. Other service projects included the Rick Hansen’s Wheels in Motion event, their Book in a Bag advocating children’s literacy, hosting the Santa Shop for children at the Festival of the Trees, participation in the Santa Claus parade. The Cornwall Kinettes started up the Car Seat Clinic to ensure cars seats are installed properly which now can be checked through the local fire department. Their longest service project is the Glen Stor Dun Lodge bingo fun nights which was started by the Cornwall Kinsmen in 1958 but soon was taken over by the Cornwall Kinettes. Other national service initiatives the Kinettes have been involved with is the Proud to be Canadian Tours, the Chosen Soldier project and the Portraits of Honour. The most recent service project is the National Day of Kindness; this year the Kinettes have put together twelve baskets with sundry articles and other goodies for various shelters and senior residences. As well they are delivering sweet treat trays to the first responders in the community. Through the national service project with Cystic Fibrosis Canada, the Cornwall Kinettes have been involved in the fight against cystic fibrosis (CF) since 1964. They have worked tirelessly beside the Cornwall CF Chapter members in their bake and craft sales, raffles and the Walk to End Cystic Fibrosis. Fundraisers to assist the Cornwall Kinettes to continue service work in the community include hall bingos, basket auctions, their signature event the Kinette Princess Ball and their longest fundraiser, the sale of poinsettias which started 40 years ago. Many members of the Cornwall Kinettes over the years have taken on leadership roles within Kin Canada at the zone, district and national levels. Leadership skills attained while in Kin have also played a key role in the workplace and the community. As a club the Cornwall Kinettes have a long and proud history. Today they come together to celebrate 75 years of working together in service, to grow, to learn and to make friends all the while “Serving our Community’s Greatest Needs”.

Cornwall Police push kids to succeed Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Throughout the week of Feb. 13, motivational speaker Mark Black spoke to students at all of the schools in Cornwall to tell the students about resiliency. “Anxiety amongst our youth seems to be a growing trend and we wanted to help provide them the tools to combat it,” said Cornwall Community Police Officer Jeff Lalonde. For 13 years, the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) has conducted these youth symposiums to promote leadership skills in Cornwall’s youth.

prognosis that if he did not receive a heart and double-lung transplant that he would not survive. Given that his chances of finding a donor to replace three of his major organs was dim, he began living life to the fullest. Mark was lucky, and he did get his life saving transplant, however he now must take a litany of medications in order to be sure that his new organs are not rejected. His expereince has taught him how to overcome the toughest of challenges and encouraged him to take on new ones. Where before Mark could not climb a flight of stairs without getting winded, now he is able to run entire marathons.

It all capped off with a final, smaller and more indepth seminar at the Best Western on Thursday, Feb. 16 where speaker Mark Black worked more closely with students on how to cope with adversity. Four students were selected by each of the high schools in Cornwall to attend this final session with Black. “Overcoming adversity is about learning adaptation and changing the way you think in a given situation or when your environment changes,” said Black. Black knows quite a bit himself when it comes to overcoming adversity. Before he began public speaking, he was given a bleak

Trustees review final staff report Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

NORTH GRENVILLE, Ontario - At a special meeting of the Upper Canada District School Board’s (UCDSB) Board of Trustees, the board and the public in attendance heard administration dissect the final draft of the Pupil Accommodation Review (PAR) report. Mostly rural schools in Cornwall and SD&G were slated for closure in the original version of the UCDSB’s PAR, with students at those schools faced with being sent out of their communities on long bus rides to and from school. The UCDSB staff accepted a lot of the feedback from the public that they heard through the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) process and chose instead to not close Char-Lan D.H.S., Williamstown P.S., Longue Sault P.S., Glengarry D.H.S. or Maxville P.S. anytime in the immediate future. Other schools and changes still remain in effect however. For instance, RothwellOsnabruck (R-O) could still see their grade 7-12 students moved to Tagwi Secondary School, 30 kilometres away from Ingleside where R-O is located. Jennifer MacIsaac, who served on the local ARC and also represents the Save Rothwell-Osnabruck group is not satisfied with this version of the PAR report. “I was truly shocked and disappointed when reading the final report to trustees,”

MacIsaac said. “Our community had a united solution for both LSPS and R-O Secondary from the beginning. This solution was thoroughly supported by residents, municipal leaders and the business community.” MacIsaac criticized UCDSB staff for not taking into consideration the feedback her community had presented to the ARC. “Our solution was quite simple, to bring French Immersion that was taken away back to R-O, and to keep the boundaries the same with LSPS feeding R-O which would result in our South Stormont Schools at 96% and 97% capacity,” she said. “The UCDSB’s issue was no longer funded, excess pupil spaces, we offered a solution to that problem yet our solution was ignored. From what I can see in the new report, the UCDSB is only filling 2,358 of their 10,000 empty spaces. In addition, the report proposes taking part of the R-O northern Elementary boundary away and sending those students to Roxmore which is over capacity and in need of an addition? Why would the board change this boundary?” MacIsaac explained that how Ingelside would be hurt by removing the high school. “We already know that the economic impact to our township is greatest if the high school is lost,” she said. “There are viable options for Tagwi also, they have three feeder schools already, all that we’re asking is that get to retain our two feeders and our existing boundary and give us back the French language programming the board

took away just a few years ago.” She also emphasized that sending high school students out of South Stormont did not make financial sense to the school board either. “This is a matter of dollars and cents and filling of vacant seats, not just an emotional plea for our beloved school,” she explained. “The Ministry recognizes value of community schools and protects them through Enhanced Top-up Funding, School Foundation Grants, and Supported Schools Allocations. Through their funding models, The Ministry is encouraging boards to move to K-12 schools as they are more affordable and efficient to run. Through these grants, schools like R-O are fully-funded. Why are we considering removing viable schools like R-O from thriving and growing communities? “ According to the school board’s own staff report, closing Rothwell-Osnabruck would cost $430, 619 with $160, 000 of that coming from busing costs alone. The Township of South Stormont received a presentation last month which forecasted a loss of $7.5 million annually for the township if the high school program ends at R-O. South Stormont’s annual budget is only $15 million. Jeff McMillan emphasized to the public who were present at the special meeting that no final decision would be made that night. “We’re not here to close any schools

OPINION

It’s not over yet Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

At the beginning of last week, some students and parents breathed a sigh of relief at the release of the final draft of the Upper Canada District School Board’s (UCDSB) Pupil Accommodation Review. At the same time others, stiffened their resolve. On Friday, Feb. 17, Char-Lan District High School and Williamstown Public School held celebrations in anticipation of Canada’s 150th birthday. Those celebrations I’m sure were all the more joyous knowing that their town’s high school would not be closed in five months. In other parts of the United Counties however, the presentation of the UCDSB’s final draft report just marked the next phase in the battle against the change the school board is trying to introduce. Rothwell-Osnabruck in Ingleside is facing the loss of their high school program and those students being bused to Tagwi Secondary School in Avonmore. This move will cost the school board over $400, 000 and $160, 000 of that will come from busing costs alone. The nearly half-million dollar hit to the

school board’s budget seems small when compared to the projected $7.5 million hit that will be done to the Township of South Stormont if the study by Doyletech is to be believed. Rothwell-Osnabruck’s high school program is one of the few schools in SD&G to still be mentioned under the closure list in the final draft report. Char-Lan, Williamstown P.S., GDHS, Longue Sault Public School and Maxville Public School have all been spared. S.J. MacLeod, North Stormont P.S. and CCVS and St. Lawrence Secondary School (which will be merged into a super-school) join R-O on the school closure list. Some of these schools will be closed by the end of the school year, like S.J., and some pending capital funding, like CCVS. The considerable grassroots network that formed around the schools that were saved can’t rejoice for long. At least I don’t think so. The school board is not finished. The problems that spawned the school board’s first draft still exist and are not solved in the final version. Remember that the school board said it had to eliminate nearly 10, 000 empty spaced across its system. The final draft report only

eliminates a little over 2, 500 of those empty spaces. The school board had to eliminate those empty spaces because of a funding change from the Ministry of Education that no longer provided financing for empty seats. Additionally the Ministry of Education will not provide funding to build new schools as long as there are empty spaces in old ones. With almost 7, 500 empty seats, the school

board will likely revisit the school closure issue sooner rather than later. MPP Jim McDonell pointed out in a recent public statement that it was the Ministry of Education’s funding scheme that has led to these cuts. Until the issue of funding for rural education is solved, the school board will be constantly pressured towards closures and consolidaitons. It’s not over yet.

my finger as I tentatively introduced it through the mesh. On subsequent visits, I noticed his bowls were always empty and there were tattered dog kibble bags strewn about. Someone was periodically feeding him. However, no one cared for him. He was not being combed, never taken for a walk, never played with and never showered with affection. His only companion was a visiting stray cat. Eventually, my research determined that his owner lived more than a hundred inconvenient kilometers away. I phoned him: “Oh yes, the dog. I’ve seen to it that someone is supposed to feed him.” I took it upon myself to visit the dog

periodically, placing some special treats in one of his bowls, putting fresh water in the other, and meting out as much affection as possible. I did not inform the OSPCA about this dog’s plight. I even toyed with the idea of adopting him. I decided to end my guilt trip number two by once again phoning his absentee owner, demanding that this time, something appropriate be done. As soon as I identified myself, he responded with, “Nothing needs to be done now. The dog is dead.” I hope there is no Christmas puppy out there that has now become like the two dogs that put me on my guilt trips. If there is, I hope there is someone who will act!

My two guilt trip dogs I’ve come across a couple of dogs that have put me on guilt trips. When I moved to the Williamstown area in 1976 I noticed a big dog anchored to a substantial steel post by a sturdy chain and a stout collar. Every time I cycled by his yard he would leap out of his minimal shelter and lunge toward me. I’m surprised that his neck didn’t snap. Then he’d run round and round in a circle. As a result, a bare circle in the grass, a chain length in radius, was created. During rainy periods, he had created the makings of a wading pool, then a muddy run. He was never taken for walks.

Eventually, I came to realize he wasn’t a vicious dog. He just wanted someone to stop and treat him like a cherished pet. Unfortunately, his negative behaviour was too ingrained to understand any friendly overtures. More unfortunately, I never spoke with the dog’s neglectful owner. The other dog that put me on a guilt trip was kept penned in a barely adequate chicken wire enclosure. I came across him one day when I had occasion to go up the long driveway of a rural home. There was never anyone home during several visits. Attracted by his whimpering, I approached his cage. I soon discovered he was somewhat elderly, but unkempt; friendly and starving for affection. His tail wagged. He licked

But tragedy struck on April 23, 1962 when Turner died a few days after suffering a stroke during a minor operation. He was 35. He left a wife and two young daughters. His funeral was as close to a civic funeral as the city has experienced. The Standard-Freeholder eulogized Turner in an April 25, 1962 editorial, “Bob Turner’s Life Work”: “Bob Turner is gone but the results of his work will survive among us. ... He took the time and devoted his energy to speak to young people of Cornwall and surrounding districts. He was a source of inspiration to young people, and his work in that direction will be remembered. He was able to speak to boys and girls and inspire them to be good citizens, to play well and to work well.” Within days of Turner being laid to rest, city council voted unanimously to rename the new youth arena the Bob Turner Memorial Centre. But there is more to the story. Shortly after Bob Turner arrived in Cornwall the ugly face of racism flashed its face. Turner started receiving calls in the middle of the night. The “N” word was used. He was told to get out of town. One night, on his way home, somebody tried to run him off the road. Fearing for his young family’s safety, Turner informed city council he was leaving. The next morning Mayor Archie Lavigne was on the radio condemning the hate mongers. A rally was organized at city hall. Hundreds of folks young and old - turned up with signs that urged Bob Turner to stay. An emotional Turner announced he would stay. It was a watershed moment for this city. Imagine the fallout if Turner had been run out

of town. Cornwall would have had to wear the racist label forever. It can be said that it was the city’s proudest moment. His widow, Dorris, became a tireless advocate for disabled persons. THIS WEEK IN 1963 The city’s traffic committee recommended to council that Seventh Street be extended beyond Brookdale Avenue to Hoople Avenue. .... Three men, all with no fixed addresses, found guilty in magistrate’s court of being intoxicated in public were given jail sentences. Two received 10 days, the third was given four days. ... A city man was given 20 days in jail for driving while his licence was suspended. ... Found guilty of passing worthless cheques, a city man asked Magistrate P.C. Bergeron for leniency. He told the magistrate he had an alcohol problem and was taking medication. Citing the man’s lengthy record, Magistrate Bergeron sentenced him to two years in Kingston Penitentiary. ... Cornwall Police Commission agreed to lease seven police vehicles from Cornwall Motor Sales for a total of $1,347 a month. ... Cornwall Gordon Refrigeration Royals downed Winchester Hawks 15-4 at the Bob Turner Memorial Centre to win the ODHA junior title. Rene Lauzon led the winners with four goals. Art Bergeron and Ron Branchaud had three each. Others goal scorers were Ray Barnes, two, Moe Whitford, Mike Murray and Ron Ward. ... Jacques Fournier’s scored with 1:35 left in the third period to give Holy Cross a 3-2 win over St. Francis de Sales in Holy Name Juvenile Hockey League playoff action. Tony Zappia and Gary Leroux also scored for Holy Cross. Eric Cooper and Barry Doyle had the St. Francis goals. TRIVIA The curtain came down on the Palace

Theatre in November 1983. The building reinvented itself as this business. TRIVIA ANSWER Dr. Ian Gourley who became Cornwall’s first pediatrician in 1934, practised medicine for 50 years. He died in May 1990. In 1968 he was one of several city residents awarded the Centennial Medal. Gourley was a tireless physician who put his young patients first. His office hours, after visiting both hospitals, often extended into the early evening. REMEMBER WHEN A kid would bend over to pick up a penny and finding a five-cent piece was like finding gold. ... Coins wrapped in waxed paper and baked in a birthday cake. Finding a 25-cent coin in your slice of birthday cake was hitting the jackpot. ... When doctors closed their practices on Wednesdays and the Standard-Freeholder carried an ad on Tuesday notifying the public which two family docs were available the next day. Many family docs had Saturday morning office hours. ... Nobody heard of eight-hour wait times in ER. Of course, nobody went to the emergency department unless it was an emergency FINAL THOUGHT Retired Cornwall police sergeant Lloyd McCullough who died last week at age 85 was one of the finest police officers I have known. The police department and the community were blessed to have him. Lloyd, who had a smile that could light up a room, enjoyed helping new officers learn the ropes. As retired inspector D’Arcy Dupuis said, “He was my mentor when I started at CCPS. His guidance and help served me so well in my career.” Said retired OPP officer Fred Carriere, “He was a true hero and a wonderful police officer ... and one hell of a hockey player.” RIP Lloyd.

As Black History Month winds down, some reflection on the contribution made to this community by a young black man is needed. His name was Thomas Louis Turner. We knew him as Bob Turner, a black man from New Jersey who broke a Canadian colour barrier in 1954 when the Ontario town of Colborne (population 1,500) hired him as its first recreation director. The first in the province. Turner was a graduate of New York City University where he obtained a bachelor of physical education degree. He chose to work in Canada. In 1958 he left Colborne to become Cornwall’s first recreation director. The city had just grown to 32 square miles from one square mile. The population expanded to 37,000 from 14,000. Remember, this was a time when blacks were being lynched in Mississippi, the Washington Redskins of the NFL refused to sign black players and blacks were not allowed to use the same washrooms or drink from the same water fountains as whites. The Our Citizens of Tomorrow (OCOT) program had served the smaller population base well but a new recreation program was needed for the expanded population base. Turner hit the ground running. Within a year he laid the foundation for a parks and recreation program that would become second to none. He is the father of Cornwall’s recreation program. He convinced city council to build a youth arena so minor hockey games - registration had topped 1,000 - didn’t have to be played outdoors at the whim of Mother Nature.

CORNWALL, Ontario - On a warmer than usual Feb. 19, 18 brave souls jumped into the still icy and freezing waters of the pond at Island Park to raise money for the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame. While it was a balmy plus seven degrees out of the water, those jumping into it assured the gathered crowd that it was still quite cold. The fundraiser managed to collect nearly $10, 000 for the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame, and that money will used for renovations and general upkeep of the building.

Laurie Filion was one of the fundraisers who jumped into the water on Sunday afternoon and said it was very cold and that it was her first and last time doing it. To warm up, Laurie and her team were going to head over to the nearby Atlantic Pub. South Glengarry Councillor Trevor Bougie was also happy to jump in. “I’m here today to represent South Glengarry,” he said. “The Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame is also something that is near and dear to my heart.” The top fundraisers were the team of Amanda Hope and Hailey Cholette and Jacques Lajoie and Laurie Filion were recognized for best costume.

Shar’s Tip of the Week

10 Ouellette Ave., Long Sault

Trying to wash a dish before scraping off the bones, crusts, and baked potato skins would seem pretty silly, as would mopping the floor before you sweep it. All cleaning should be done with this same logic of first removing the bulk of the mess-all the loose dirt and dust you can by sweeping, vacuuming, scraping, and so on. Doing so will expose the surface you’re trying to clean. The first principle of efficient cleaning is not to have to do it in the first place. Stopping the cause is the smartest thing to do.

Amazing 3 bdrm., 3 bath home in a quaint community! Features an open concept lifestyle ideal for a growing family. The family room is also equipped with a stunning fireplace, patio doors leading to an outdoor oasis for great entertaining! MLS1043344 home of the week

Diversity Cornwall shares the love at Valentine’s Ball Alycia Douglass

within the community.” Stephanie Nadeau is the organization’s director and president, and says that the group recently qualified for non-profit status, which she says will make a huge difference in the organization’s credibility. “It allows us to grow a lot without so many struggles,” said Nadeau. This year has been a busy one for the organization, which was reassembled following the Orlando shooting in June 2016. “After the shooting, I felt there was something missing,” said Nadeau. “When I found out that Cornwall had a small vigil, we started discussing the possibility of bringing the organization back to the city.”

alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Diversity was something to dance about this Saturday Feb. 18 as Diversity/Diversité Cornwall kicked up their heels at the organization’s first Valentine’s Ball, which took place at the Army Navy Club. Sophie Lepage, who handles the group’s media relations, says that the event provides the opportunity for everyone to enjoy an evening without judgement. “Cornwall has a large LGBT community, and to be able to come out and enjoy a slow dance is something we’re really happy to be a part of,” said Lepage. “To be able to do that is kind of a release – it’s so important to have a safe place

Nadeau says that the community has been extremely supportive of the group, and she plans on getting local schools involved in the future. “We’d like to have liaisons with the various committees to help build a stronger support system for the youth, and show them that there’s a place for them to come,” said Nadeau. “I think that openness and acceptance are so important,” said Lepage. “Love is love.” Sophie Lepage and Kelsey Anderson take part in the evening’s festivities at Diversity/Diversité Cornwall’s first annual Valentine’s Ball at the Army Navy Air Force Club. Counties supports SNC in the fight against Emerald Ash Borer Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The United Counties of SDG approved South Nation Conservation’s recommendation to extend the management and support of the County’s forest activities until Dec. 2021, coinciding with the end of the five-year-plan. SNC and the Counties have been part of an ongoing partnership for management of the County Forest and the County Roadside Tree program. With the existing MOU between SNC and the United Counties of SDG having recently expired, United Counties Manager of Planning and Forestry Committee member Alison McDonald says there are a number of reasons for the Counties to renew the existing partnership. “We saw some big loss in North Stormont

– about 5%, with lots of clearing going on,” said McDonald. “We’ve been invited to join an Agricultural Forest Loss Committee – they’re going to help us get some trees back in the ground and combat forest loss.” Committee members expressed concern over the area’s Emerald Ash Borer issue, with the city having spent nearly $34,000 in 2016 to cut down diseased trees within city limits. SNC claims that continued efforts to plant and maintain trees as well as control invasive species will help to mitigate losses. “Some of the roadside consulting services that we do get through this agreement as well will involve getting a professional forester to help us identify if the trees along the roadside are posing a risk – either diseased or dead,” said Stewardship Coordinator, Jim Hendry. “So, that’s another service we can draw on.”

Claudette Wanzer and Naomi Lamarche founders of the Girls Night Out group presented Danielle a Baldwin House representative with a donation of $3610.05. It was a great night and we are looking forward to next year’s event already. We have finally found the right size venue to host our event where everyone can be in the main area and feel a part of the event. A special thank you to all our singers, volunteers, entertainment dancers, sponsors and vendors that made this year’s event a huge success. We are looking forward to Girls Night Out#5 2018. Naomi says every year we have grown and expanded we ask for feedback on our event to make the next year even better we have already made plans for some changes in next year’s event including a change of date so we don’t fall on the Big Brothers and Sisters annual bowling fundraising event. The community in Cornwall love to participate in fundraising activities in Cornwall and therefore we have decided to host our event the week after so the community can take advantage of participating in two wonderful events no longer being held on the same date.

The Boulangerie Lanthier Bakery factory in Alexandria recently got a fresh new look and new expanded quarters. A donation from the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will provide patients with new portable x-ray machine valued at more than $190,000. The Auxiliary raised funds through a community dance, bridge clubs, the Gift Shoppe, among other fundraisers. In collaboration with Sand Road Maple Farm in Moose Creek, South Nation Conservation is once again offering its Maple Education Program, which provides a unique, hands-on history of the production of maple syrup.

Jean Patenaude is the kind of person who is always stepping up to the plate to help. In 2011 she began giving overnight care to someone who knew her as an aquaintance, but has since come to know her as the deeply caring friend that she is. This is just one example of the selflessness and community mindedness that Jean has displayed. She is also involved in many youth organizations as well as community organizations such as the Navy League and the Kinsman. she has also juggled two to three jobs to support her family while still being involved in her children’s activities. With all this going on, she still finds time for her community. Jean Patenaude is pictured in the centre receiving the award from Lahaie & Sullivan.

As part of National Cupcake Day, Seaway District High School will be holding a sweet fundraiser for SPCAs and Humane Societies on Monday, Feb. 27. They are inviting students and community members to participate in the event.

Toni Reidl has been volunteering at St. Peter’s school library for ten years. She started as the volunteer librarian when her grandson came to the school, but continued to do so long after he moved on. She has worked tirelessly to make sure the school has the best and newest books, she organizes, catalogues, and orders all of the library books. This is not a small job. She takes great pride in her work. Every year she sets up tutorials for each class and reminds them how to use the library and how to care for books. She also puts all the books back on the shelves after they are returned weekly, which amounts to hundreds of books. She never asks for praise, or a thank you. Sometimes the school doesn’t even know she has come in, except for a clean and organized library. She is truly an unsung hero. Toni Reidl is pictured in the centre receiving the award from Lahaie & Sullivan.

The waitress says, “Sorry, but the guy next to you got the last bowl.” He looks over and sees that the guy’s finished his meal, but the bowl of chili is still full. He asks, “Are you going to eat that chili?” The other guy says, “No. Help yourself.” He slides the bowl of chili over and starts to eat. When he gets about half way down, his spoon hits something. He looks down sees a dead mouse and immediately pukes all the chili back into the bowl. The other guy says, “Yeah, that’s about as far as I got, too.”

Off the Shelf: News from SD&G County Library Susan Wallwork Time is valuable – and we never seem to have enough of it! Busy lives have us running here, there, and everywhere. More and more, we face the challenge of balancing our lives, including trying to carve out just a little bit of time for ourselves. For some of us, reading can be one of the ways we relax, unwind, and even escape – if just for a little while. But this past hectic week got me wondering - is there more to being able to relax than just picking up a good book? Why on a busy week, was it less relaxing when time to read was limited to a lunch break? And then it hit me - part of the relaxation experience can be the place that you’re reading in. If you change the place, the whole experience can be different. Choosing the environment can be just as important and influencing as the book

you’re reading. However, it doesn’t mean that you can only escape into a good book when you’re reading in a certain place, but it can impact the results. And depending on what you’re looking for, you may pick a different place. For example, perhaps looking to wind down is best suited to reading in bed, while escaping fits in well with reading outdoors on a warm day. We all develop our favourite places to read, and subconsciously often tie them into what we’re looking to get out of our reading experience. Looking for your next read and a place to escape to? Visit any branch of the SD&G County Library to check out our selection of reading materials, as well as some of our cozy nooks that might just be your new favourite place to read.
