CORRECTION

The March 2 edition of the Cornwall Seaway News had an incorrect caption on page 8. In partnership with Quilles Nativité Bowl, Ottawa’s Ronald McDonald House officially kicked off their McBowl initiative this Saturday, Mar. 4. The newly launched fundraising effort helps raise money for a worthy cause all while enjoying a day of bowling. The event itself is set to take place on May 6, and will benefit families across Eastern Ontario with seriously ill children. Mallory Ouellette’s son, Darby was born weighing just 2.45 lbs, and after suffering kidney failure, was admitted to CHEO. Ouellette, her husband and their three children walked over to RMH to see if they could help, and were admitted the following day.

On Thursday, Mar. 2, the LCBO issued a recall on Georgian Bay Vodka. Further discussion with the Georgian Bay Gin Company revealed that the alcohol content listed on the product’s label does not accurately represent the product’s actual alcohol content.

Local students got the chance to showcase their skills at the 8th Annual Eastern Ontario Secondary School Skills Competition. The event took place at St. Lawrence College (SLC) this Tuesday, Feb. 28, featuring competition in trades such as Carpentry, Welding, Hairstyling, and Photography to name a few.

A community plumbing team Beehler said.“Plumbing is a demanding field. Most times when you have a problem, you have to deal with it sooner rather than later.” Beehler said that when he left high school that he did not want a job where he was put behind a desk every day. That is something that he values about the plumbing trade, that it offers something different and the possibility that each day might not be the same as the last. Beehler has 17 years of plumbing experience, starting in the trade right out of high school. In that time he has seen a lot and is prepared to tackle any number of pipe related problems.

“Anything and everything plumbing related we will do,” he said. “And if we encounter a problem, we figure it out.” Customers really appreciate Adam Beehler Plumbing’s dedication to service as shown by the many testimonials on the Adam Beehler website. “The service is above and beyond any experience I have ever had,” wrote one Dan Gange. “During the Christmas Holidays I had absolutely no water. Adam had personally returned my call our best interest. I would recommend Adam right away and within 20 minutes I had someone Beehler Plumbing to anyone who needs a over to get the issue resolved. Adam Beehler and his team of plumbers are well known in the area. It is hard to miss the bright, blue and orange vans as they travel around Cornwall and SD&G. Those trucks are a welcomed sight to see when someone is dealing with a plumbing emergency in their home. “We stand by our 24 hour emergency commitment,” said Beehler. “I was troubleshooting a problem on the phone with a customer at 12 a.m. the other day.” That is the nature of plumbing Beehler explained. He knows that it is a discipline where when a customer has a problem, it cannot wait. “Getting people out of a jam is always worth it,”

The Eastern Ontario region has recently been in a state of flux. There is ample discussion about recent expansion and contractions in the economy; rural exodus of talent continues to impact the region. Powerful external competitors are attempting to gain market share. Margins are being squeezed, competitors are aggressively targeting your clients & the expectations of today’s consumers are more demanding than ever before.

Dads tackle tangles for a good cause ALYCIA DOUGLASS alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dads are great - but they aren’t always pros when it comes to doing their daughters’ hair. This Saturday, Mar. 5, Kings and Little Ones hosted their second annual Daddy and Daughter Hair Survival Class with proceeds to Sexual Assault Support Services for Women of SDG&A. The hour-long crash course aims to teach fathers the basics styling their daughter’s hair, all while contributing to a worthy cause. Angela Vinet, Executive Director of SASS says that while the event is a fun way to raise money for

the organization, it also serves a crucial role in the relationships between fathers and daughters. “We thought in partnership with Kings and Little Ones, it would be a great opportunity for dads to get involved in their daughter’s lives,” said Vinet. “There was such high demand last year that we decided to do it again.” The event not only serves a practical role within the day-to-day lives of fathers and daughters, but also allows them to get in some quality time. “I think when it comes down to it, dads involvement in their daughters’lives play a big role in their self esteem,” said Vinet. “For us, it’s all about empowering women and hopefully reducing all

sexual assault...but that stems from having great role models.” Mark Vincent, who participated with daughter, Avelynn said that his new skill set may create some healthy competition in his household. “Now I’ve kind of got to compete with mom... everything I do with my wife, we compete, so this should be no different,” said Vincent. Button Ignition Having experienced tremendous Push success in its second year, there has been discussion of possibly Alloy Wheels upping the ante in the next year with the option Heated Seats of a second skill level. “I think this is going to become anSun annual tradRoof ition,” said Vinet.

Seaway News is moving up Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Starting next week, TC Media is making changes and they are excited for the future of their office on Campbell St. “We are introducing more positive changes at our office that involve all departments of TC Media in Cornwall” said GM Rick Shaver. Effective March 15, the Ad Bag will begin delivery on Wednesday. This will bring the Cornwall Seaway News, the Cornwall Express and the Ad Bag flyers to our readers one day ahead of our current schedule. “This is great for our advertisers and readers,” said Patrick Larose, TC Media’s Media Strategy Manager in Cornwall. “Now the paper will be delivered on Wednesday and we can begin planning for the next week that same day.” Eight hours of daylight will mean a cleaner and faster distribution and increased safety for our carriers. Our date of distribution is not the only thing that’s moving up at TC Media; our staff numbers are on the rise as well. Our editorial department has added, Alycia Douglass as a new reporter. Alycia has been with TC Media for about a month now and covers our counties and sports stories, as well as weekend

OPINION

Down the rabbit hole of electoral reform Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

How do you complicate something as simple as voting? Well, the Ontario provincial government has found a way. At the last meeting of Cornwall City Council, they received a presentation from a representative of the provincial government on their brand of Ranked Ballot voting and boy was it a doozy. Ranked Ballot voting is not complicated in theory. The key is in the name, you rank your candidates from most favourite, to least favourite. Yet, Provincial administrators have made their own brand of Ranked Ballot voting and have added a healthy dose of complexity to the process. With things like “exhausted” ballots, a vote counting process that could take days and an actual rule where you need to “pick a name from a hat” in the case of a tie the provincial version of Ranked Ballot voting takes what should be a straightforward process and sends it down the rabbit hole. “Pick a name out of a hat” in case of a tie? Are you kidding me? This is an election, not who gets to be captain of an elementary

school intermural volleyball team. If the only options available to the voters of Cornwall are First Past the Post and Ranked Ballot, normally, I’d recommend switching to Ranked Ballot voting as it is more representative than First Past the Post, but not in the form it is now. The burden of the complexity of the Province’s version of this voting system is a scarce improvement on the ease, but lack of representation offered by First Past the Post voting. There are better voting systems out there than the two choices that the Province has left its municipalities. In fact, a community should be allowed to elect their representatives however they want and that is a freedom that the Province should give back. In a pure Ranked Ballot voting system, a voter ranks their candidates in order of preference. The candidate or candidates that receive the fewest top ranked votes are eliminated. The process continues until all elected positions are filled. This system is more representative than First Past the Post, which is the system we use now, because it ensures that a majority of the public support the eventual winners of the election. It also discourages candidates from pandering to political extremes as they want to get the support of as many people as

important today than it has been in generations. There has been talk of holding a referendum on the issue of electoral reform in the City and on the number of Councillors that the city has and the possibility of returning to the ward system. All of these ideas are worth talking about and the people of Cornwall should be familiar enough with these issues to weighin on them. Democracy is not a “set it and forget it” process, it needs regular review and maintenance.

possible, unlike with First Past the Post under which a candidate can be elected by a small minority. Any system that promises more representation and less extremism I am in favour of, but why does it have to have exhausted ballots and names in hats? Regardless, the City of Cornwall is going ahead with public information sessions and this review process of our electoral system, which is absolutely a good thing. The voting process should be reviewed regularly as a way to ensure faith in the system, which is more

Everyone needs white stripes of some sort Have you ever gone somewhere where many of your friends were gathered, but nobody recognized you? I have. It was a pleasant early September day. A flyin of light aircraft was taking place at a small airstrip. On my arm was a new lady friend. For some reason we were travelling in her car. Intent on giving her my undivided attention, I left my camera and the dog at home. I had accidentally left my Tilley at home. As we circulated among the various Cessnas, Pipers, Stinsons

People still remember her.) Why did I choose this topic and share these narratives this week? Just so I could get my mug shot in again, even if it’s just one more time. The mug shot that accompanied my column every week made me recognizable, put people at ease, started conversations and opened doors. Anonymity is okay for a spy or a burglar, but not for a local columnist or photographer. I like being able to be identified. My mug shot serves the same as the white stripes that were painted on all Allied aircraft on D-Day, sixth of June, 1944.

On another occasion my public persona came to my rescue. I was in a small local town, my gas tank was almost empty. I had forgotten my wallet at home. I needed some money. I apprehensively approached the teller at the only bank in town, saying, “I don’t have an account with your bank, but I’d like to cash a personal cheque.” “Do you have any identification?” “No, everything’s at home.” I thought my request was going to be in vain. “We can cash that cheque for you, but we need some identification. After the Gaels, he called the signals for Ed Lumley’s Cornwall Chargers/Mustangs of the Interprovincial Junior Football League. He played for the Glens junior lacrosse team and later in life coached minor hockey. In 2011 Levert was inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame. He became a member of the Alexandria Police Department and when the force was absorbed by the Ontario Provincial Police, he switched uniforms. In total, he spent 29 years as a police officer, all in Glengarry County. Levert died last week after a lengthy illness. He was 70. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday afternoon at Glengarry Funeral Home, Alexandria. TRIVIA In August 1985 Nativity Co-cathedral was filled to capacity (an estimated 1,000 people) for the funeral of this former Ontario cabinet minister. TRIVIA ANSWER If you said the answer to last week’s question (The 44 homes in the neighbourhood known as Smithville were torn down in 1958 to expand this mill?) is Domtar, you are wrong. Sort of. As pointed out by former mill employee Nick Cox, at the time it was Howard Smith Paper Mill. HERE AND THERE Ottawa Senators fan and reader Jessie Ouderkirk is celebrating a birthday this week (March 9). She turns 89. She grew up on the family farm that was settled by the Tulloch family in the 1880s. As was the case with so many homesteads, the farm was swallowed up by the Seaway Project. It is now Woodlands Beach and the nearby campsite. THIS WEEK IN 1967 St. Lawrence College

The annual meeting of the United Counties Children’s Aid Society was told that the number of unwed mothers in its jurisdiction increased 116% over the previous 10-year period. ... Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph announced that a $1 million, 120-bed facility for the aged would be build next to Macdonell Hospital on York Street. St. Joseph’s Villa would replace St. Paul’s Home which had been torn down. ... Ald. Angelo Lebano proposed the city endorse legalized lotteries in Ontario as a means to reduce property taxes. ... City lawyers G. A. Stiles, C.J. McDougald and P.V. Rudden were appointed to the United Counties legal aid committee. ... Jim Cotnam scored with 56 seconds left in regulation time then scored with seven seconds left in the first 10-minute overtime period to give Cornwall Royals a 3-2 win over Pembroke Lumber Kings and a 3-1 stranglehold in the Central Junior Hockey League best-ofseven semifinal. The game in Pembroke was played in front of 3,487 fans.

It wasn’t the sort of earth-shaking rattle-androll event that had Cornwall residents thinking the end of the world had arrived when the ground shook under them in the early-morning of Sept. 5, 1944, but when measured on the political seismic monitor, what happened on Dec. 9, 1946 shook the local political landscape. East Centre Ward voters made aldermanic candidate Mary Mack their overwhelming choice to serve on city council. It was an historic event. She became the first female member of City Council. It was no fluke. She was re-elected by another wide margin in 1948. This a time when one could count the number of female members of Ontario city councils on one hand and still have a finger left over; a time when the Ontario Legislature had one female MPP; a time when there were no female physicians in all of the United Counties; and a time when police departments didn’t accept female applicants. It wasn’t until 1957 that a woman served in the federal cabinet. The first female MP from Quebec didn’t arrive in Ottawa until 1972, and one of them Jeanne Sauve, became the first female Speaker of the House and later the first female governor-general. It wasn’t until 1951 that a woman, Ottawa’s feisty Charlotte Whitton, was elected mayor of a city with more than 1,000 residents. The NDP, in 1989, made Audrey McLaughlin the first female federal party leader. That is the kind of break-through Mary Mack’s election to city council was in 1947. It is a pity that this piece of history, not to mention her community work, has not been recognized.

A gracious woman, who came from “old money”and who cherished the arts and studied in Paris, she was affectionately known as Cornwall’s Grand Dame. Mack, by modern definition, was a community activist. She worked tirelessly and quietly to help ease the burdened carried by the less fortunate members of the community. During the Great Depression, concerned with the plight of the community’s poor, she helped set up the Family Welfare Bureau which assisted those in dire need with the necessities of life. On this, the week International Women’s Day is celebrated some other firsts: Beth Davidson was not only elected the first female president of the Cornwall and District Labour Council in 1970 but became the first woman in Ontario to head up a labour council. On Dec. 2, 1963 Enid MacDonald, elected deputy reeve of Lochiel Township, became the first woman to serve on United Counties Council. In September 1961 Gladys Marcellus of Chesterville became the first female bank manager (Ottawa branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia) in Canada. And in the early 1980s, Cornwall hired its first female police officer. In his two seasons with the Cornwall Royals, Roger Levert proved to be a rugged winger who made a sizeable offensive contribution. A Cornwall native whose family moved to Alexandria when he was a youngster, Levert was a member of the Royals club that suffered a heartbreaking loss to Halifax Junior Canadiens in the seventh game (played in Halifax) of the 1966 Eastern Canada Memorial Cup semi-final. In the regular season, Levert contributed 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points with injuries limiting him to 20 games.

Blues legend set to rock the Port Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - This Thursday, March 16, the Port Theatre will welcome seasoned blues musician, Doug MacLeod. Having recently won the 2016 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist of the Year, as well as the Blues Blast Music Award for Male Artist of the Year, his rich, soulful vocals, which channel the old masters, are sure to appeal to local blues enthusiasts. MacLeod says that meeting people at smaller venues makes his performances even more rewarding. “Playing big old theatres is cool to do, but smaller venues really keep you in touch with your

humanity,” said MacLeod. As a travelling artist, MacLeod’s music is rooted in his life and experiences. Famed for his traditional approach to songwriting, his songs embody heavy elements of storytelling. His wizardry on guitar is part of his experiential charm, along with his wit and unparalleled live performances. At the heart of his performances is a knack for bringing folkloric characters to life through his music. “What people can expect from me is all original music, a little humour, and a lot of stories,” said MacLeod. “I like to think when people leave, they’re getting their money’s worth.” With authenticity being a vitally important

element in his music, MacLeod says that the secret to his success has always been “just sitting in front of the microphone and performing.” “This style of music is made by humans for humans,” said MacLeod. “Nobody walks through this world perfect.” Having spent years honing his skills, MacLeod’s playing style can be described as powerfully rhythmic. His incessant right hand produces a furious churning beat, masterfully accompanying his elaborate bottleneck and finger-style technique. It was this very style that earned him gigs with blues legends, George ‘Harmonica’ Smith, Big Joe Turner, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson, Lowell Fulson, and Big Mama Thornton. MacLeod’s

career, which has spanned 29 years, has included 20 studio albums, several live records, compilations, and even an instructional blues guitar DVD. Having had his songs covered by the likes of Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker, and Eva Cassidy, MacLeod has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success throughout the years. The perennial Blues Music Award nominee follows the rule-of-thumb learned from country bluesman Ernest Banks, who told him to “never play a note you don’t believe,” and “never write or sing about what you don’t know about.” “Banks was talking about being honest,” said MacLeod. “It’s sending out a feeling – that’s what blues is all about.”

Masquer-aid back for fourth year Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the fourth year, Cornwall’s Masquer-aid fundraiser in support of the Candlelighters promises to be a fun evening for a good cause. This year, this growing event will take place at the Ramada on April 1. Tickets are $75 and are available at Scotiabank. Over the past four years, Masquer-aid has raised about $70, 000 in support of the Candlelighters, a support program for parents who are helping their children fight childhood cancer. According to last year’s Masquer-aid Chairperson, Catherine Heenan, in our area, at least one child every week will be diagnosed with cancer. The Candlelighters help those families deal with that devastating news by helping remove some of the financial pressures. This year, the event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn. At the end of the evening, Miller Hughes is offering a shuttle service home for guests.

Spring Cleaning: Making cleaning easier Sharon Fortier

owner/operator Shar’s Private Cleaning Services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Where to begin? Always start from the top to the bottom. Remove all wall hangings, clean and set aside. Declutter your room and start washing the ceilings, fans and any hanging light fixtures. Then wash walls, window and door trims, doors,

baseboards, clean furniture as required and finally floors. Wash one room at a time and completely before moving on to the next room in order to stay organized. You can also include window cleaning per room or as a seperate job altogether including blinds and curtains. Just remember it took 6 months to get dirty and unless you hire a cleaning company to get the job done all at once, this task could take several days on your own.

Did you happen to buy any Georgian Bay Vodka in the past week? Well if you did you may bought more than you bargained for. The LCBO has recalled all bottles of Georgian Bay Vodka for not having the alcohol content advertised. Instead of being the standard 40%, Georgian Bay packed 81% alcohol into these bottles. Regardless of the danger this can pose to the unwary consumer, some citizens of Cornwall were clamoring to get their hands on a bottle of this high octane vodka.

I talked to a homeless man this morning and asked him how he ended up this way. He said, “Up until last week, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage.” I felt sorry for him, so I asked, “What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?” “Oh no, nothing like that,” he said. “No, no.... I was paroled.”
