Local pharmacy offering Naloxone training Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s Medical Arts Pharmacy is offering Naloxone kits and training to those who might have a chance to save a life. Naloxone is a drug which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Opioids are the family of narcotics that include morphine, heroine, oxycontin and fentanyl. Fentanyl is a very powerful opioid that has been linked to a rash of overdoses across North America over the past year, so much so that the government of British Columbia has declared a health crisis to deal with the overdose issue. A true danger of the drug is the fact that other narcotics have been found to be laced with fentanyl. Those who use drugs like heroine or cocaine might not know that their dose is laced with the powerful fentanyl. In late 2016, the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) and the Eastern Ontario Health

Unit (EOHU) issued a warning about fentanyl in the area. “Illicit Fentanyl can be found in any street drug and its concentration will vary from one pill to another due to the lack of quality control,” said Daniel Parkinson, Chief of Police in that statement. “Even a small amount of illicit Fentanyl can be deadly, which explains why it has caused hundreds of deaths throughout the country.” Opioids work by attaching themselves to receptors in the brain, Naloxone has a greater affinity for these receptors and blocks them preventing or even reversing an overdose. However, the effect of Naloxone is short and if the opioid is still in the person’s body, then the person can overdose again. Naloxone was made a Schedule 2 drug in June, which meant that pharmacies could give kits to patients without a doctor’s prescription. Harry Haramis of Medical Arts Pharmacy said that at first, there was not much of a demand for

the Naloxone kits, but that once people started to catch on, the demand slowly began to increase. “Almost everybody is eligible if you are a person who could potentially save a life,” said Haramis. Those eligible for Naloxone kits have an Ontario Health card, are opioid addicts, former addicts who may relapse, or someone who is a family member of friend of someone who they are concerned could overdose on opioids. Those seeking a Naloxone kit can go into pharmacies like Medical Arts who are offering them and simply ask for one. The pharmacy is required to instruct the recipient of the kit on how to properly use it, and also what to do in the case of an overdose. For addicts pharmacists will offer instructions to avoid an overdose, like testing their drugs before taking a full dose, never taking drugs alone and having a plan in case of an overdose.

Naloxone can prevent someone from dying of an opiod overdose. TC Media file photo.

Ministers Hunter and Chiarelli pen letter to municipalities

CORNWALL, Ontario - In a joint letter sent to school boards and municipalities on Sunday, Ontario Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter and Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli called for more co-operation on rural education. In the letter, Hunter describes how she will promote co-operation between co-terminus boards “particularly if doing so will maintain a school presence in a rural or isolated community,” the letter states.

Forests Ontario offering tree planting funding

Spring is for new ideas. Do you have idle land or extra acreage that could be enhanced? Planting trees is an excellent way to add value to your property and has never been easier. If you have 2.5 acres or more of open land, you may be eligible for the 50 Million Tree Program, and the trees are planted for you! If you are considering a large-scale planting on your property, the 50 Million Tree Program can help by providing both funding support to cover a significant portion (up to 80%) of the total planting costs and technical assistance. A local planting partner will work with you to develop a site plan that suits your property’s unique needs; they will do the planting and conduct follow up assessments in subsequent years. The landowner can relax while the work is conducted by experienced professionals.

CCPS to more closely monitor bridge traffic

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Community Police Service will be closely monitoring traffic along Brookdale Avenue and the Seaway International Bridge as a result of an increase in reported incidents of dangerous and aggressive driving coming from and going to The Seaway International Bridge.

TC Media’s first Google Partners Connect event took place on Weds. March 15 with a focus on real estate.

Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - TC Media hosted their first Google Partners Connect event on Weds. March 15 at the Nav Centre. The event aimed to assist in growing a real estate business online. “We are a proud Certified Google Premier Partner,” said Patrick Larose, Media Strategy Manager for Seaway News. “What does that mean? It means we follow Google’s best advertising practices.” TC Media is Ad Words Certified, which involves completing and passing a comprehensive exam. “We manage a significant Ad Words investment, and have proven our ability through performance to help businesses succeed time and time again,” said Larose. Nada Kovinich, Sales Representative at RE/ MAX Cornwall says that the seminar helped her assess the platforms already at her disposal. “I think in terms of online marketing, using Google for ad searches and bumping your ad are going to be really useful,” said Kovinich.

“The other thing that really stood out to me was online booking. Very few agents in Cornwall use online booking.” Jean Leger, Real Estate Broker, at RE/MAX Cornwall said that the conference helped illuminate some points of improvement. “I already use social media, but I think the seminar gave me some strategies that will help me make better use of those tools,” said Leger. “I’m going to have to do a little more homework, because it gave me a lot to think about. There’s a lot more involved than I’m currently using.” Larose says that this will be the first of many events to come, with Google Partners Connect events planned throughout the year designed with specific industries in mind. The next event will be held Apr. 17, focusing primarily on providing useful tools for the Automotive industry. “We look forward to hosting and sharing this valuable information with all our clients moving forward,” said Larose. “There are so many great things ahead for us and our clients.”

Green thumbs up for third annual Seedy Saturday Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - While all signs of winter are still present and accounted for, the third annual Seedy Saturday event kicked off this Saturday, March 18, giving residents a glimpse into spring. Hosted in partnership with Transition Cornwall+ Food Action Group and the All Things Food Network, this free community event hopes to plant the seed for gardeners of all skill levels to get better acquainted with their food, specifically how it’s grown. In previous years, the event was hosted at the Agape Centre, but thanks to the Social Development Council, vendors and guests were able to spread out a little more at the Benson Centre. “When we were at Agape, people were either going for our event, or not at all,” said John Towndrow of Transition Cornwall+. “At the Benson Centre, there’s a lot more foot traffic, which is good for us.” Towndrow says that there are some exciting changes in the event’s demographic. “I think we’re starting to bring in a broader audience,” said Towndrow. “We’re seeing a lot more younger people getting more interested in gardening because I think they realize it’s important to know where their food is coming from.” Coordinator of All Things Food Network, Kat Rendek says that this spike is due to the rise in concern for how food is grown, making the move to the Benson Centre an even more obvious choice. “We want to get people more invested in their food system, and one of the best ways to do that is to encourage gardening,” said Rendek. “This is the first of many other gardening events that provide opportunities to help people plan their garden, but also help people learn more about gardening in general.” The event featured a wide variety of seed vendors, local

Jordan Bouchard of Green’s Creek Farm talks seeds with a guest at the third annual Seedy Saturday event on March 18 at the Benson Centre (Alycia Douglass/TC Media). food vendors, community exhibitors, as well as free children’s activities. Throughout the day, guests were encouraged to take part in any number of

the free workshops on topics from garden layout planning to vermiculture. Workshops were offered for both beginner and advanced gardening enthusiasts.

Donations raised during the event will help support future events by Transition Cornwall+ Food Action Group and All Things Food.

A glass half full: local brewery on the grow

Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

Andy and Karen Rorabeck of Rurban Brewing stand next to the brewery’s new tanks. (Alycia Douglass/TC Media)

available in the coming weeks, owner/brewer Andy Rorabeck says that good things take time. “I’d rather have someone upset about their beer not being ready than release something that I know I’ve rushed,” said Andy. In addition to the brewery’s expansion, they

MARCH 23 - 26

are also slated to release their beloved Kentucky Smooth Amber Cream Ale, which will be available just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. “Kentucky Smooth is just a really easy-drinking amber-coloured beer,” said Karen. “It’s a style that was lost in prohibition, and now some brewers are trying to bring it back.” Karen says that they are always on the hunt for a mid-range beer to add to the brewery’s assortment, and Kentucky Smooth was just the ticket.

Typically, the brewery has between 10-14 beers in-stock, with their five staples being Stops and Goes, New Johnstown, White Tail, Alestake & Evergreen, and their Palentine Pale Ale, with the Cornwall Golden Lager soon to be added to the docket. “Our philosophy is to have a variety for people, so even if they don’t like all of the beers, there’s probably something that they would like,” said Karen.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s been a good year for Rurban Brewing. Having recently received the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Small Business of the Year, the brewery has just completed a highly-anticipated expansion. “Everything is hooked up as of yesterday, and ready to go,” said brewery matriarch, Karen Rorabeck. “That will give us a 300 percent increase in volume, which puts us about two years ahead of where wanted to be. We basically just want to get the beer flowing and see where we go with it.” Karen says that the expansion came following the tremendous success of the newly launched Cornwall Golden Lager, which was announced this past Dec. at Team Cornwall’s Year in Review Meeting. “The Cornwall Golden Lager is kind of the reason for our expansion, and is easily one of our more popular beers already” said Karen. “If that was the only beer we wanted in shop, we’d tie every single tank up keeping it in shop.” The expansion, which includes the addition of several new tanks and fermenters, will allow the brewery to keep up with the demand of the tasty new brew. “It’s a beer that takes a long time to make – anywhere from six to nine weeks.” While the lager takes slightly longer to produce, Karen says it’s a worthy feat, with the last batch selling out in less than a week. Mayor defends city in letter to counties Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mayor, Leslie O’Shaughnessy recently responded to the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry’s letter to the City of Cornwall regarding shared services. O’Shaughnessy expressed that while sharing their frustration, he does not believe that the City of Cornwall is the sole reason for the stalling of negotiations. The Counties’ original letter outlines the history of shared services between the municipalities, namely about how City Council has yet to ratify a new agreement, thus prolonging the process. “We understand the reason that the City has not ratified the agreement is because it is not in agreement with the inclusion of a dispute resolution clause which includes the right of either party to arbitrate if necessary,” reads the letter. “This is frustrating and disappointing to the County, as the right of parties to arbitrate is a universally accepted concept designed to protect the interests of each party in the event that a dispute cannot be settled directly or through mediation.” In response, the mayor stated that the letter ‘seems to blame the City for further delays.’ At the Counties’ regular meeting on Dec. 16, 2016, a motion was passed to approve in principle a draft Consolidated Municipal Service

Management Agreement. However, according to O’Shaughnessy, the City never received a true copy of the document that was passed. “On the morning of January 17, 2017, I had a meeting with a representative from the Counties in my office where I indicated that we had not received a true copy of the agreement that was passed in principle by Counties Council and we could not move forward until it was reviewed,” reads the mayor’s letter. “Counties staff indicated that we already had a copy in our file. We do not. As you can see, we have done all we can to obtain a true copy of the document you wished us to consider but for some reason, you are not prepared to give it to us.” The letter reiterates that the city never received a true copy of the motion, having searched email accounts and regular mail registry but to no avail. “Yet the suggestion is made that the City is stalling. I think not. Further to this, if you have sent the document to us and it was misplaced or accidentally deleted, I would be more than happy to apologize on behalf of the City and if you cannot provide us with the date that you sent notification, I would expect an apology from you for making false allegations against us,” states the mayor. Despite frustrations, the City of Cornwall continues to recognize the importance of the Counties, and hopes they can work together to resolve current and future obstacles.

OPINION

What to do with dirty laundry Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Over the past two weeks, the media and public have been privy to the dispute between the United Counties of SD&G and the City of Cornwall. At issue are shared services between the two municipalities. On the one hand, we have the Counties who are accusing the City of rejecting an arbitration clause they desire in the joint agreement, and of dragging their feet. In response, the City says that the Counties want to micromanage shared services, that they do not have their paperwork together and that they are making, what boils down to false accusations. The question is, how and why did it get to this point? Why was this neighbourly dispute taken to the public and not resolved through co-operation? Co-operation is at the heart of this whole issue, it is a dispute over shared services after all. What this argument shows, is that elected officials from the same region, representing citizens who live side by side, cannot learn to

co-operate long enough to negotiate a deal about co-operating. One side, or hopefully both, should have been able to see the red flags that this particular negotiation was not going well. When things like this happen, our leaders should be able to look at what they need to get out of a deal, and what they can live without. Take a walk for a mile in the other person’s shoes to use a tired idiom. As a member of the press, I like to know what our political representatives are doing, but as a citizen, I can’t say that this is a good look for our municipal governments. We like to see smooth operations and to know that our elected officials can work together on issues that matter to people in different municipalities who see each other and do business with each other every day. If a sign of co-operation between elected officials inspires confidence, this battle of words between neighbouring municipalities does not. Is one side in the right and the other in the wrong? It is hard to tell. Readers you will have to ask yourselves,

should both sides accept arbitration on any issue and is that necessary? My feelings on this are that at the very least, both sides are responsible for the issue being in the public eye. I refuse to believe that this is not something that could have been resolved behind closed doors to the satisfaction of both

parties. It wasn’t, and now the issue of shared services, which is something that citizens would not have spent a lot of time thinking about otherwise, is at the forefront of the local news and their inability to co-operate has damaged the image of both municipal councils.

Sailboats list; so should travellers Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words In scripture, Luke 10, 2-9, the hard-to-follow travel advice given is “Go on your way…Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road…Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you…” I also don’t follow the advice given in the song ‘Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag’. Better to leave them behind. Then there’s Ole Saint Nick’s packing advice: make a list and check it twice. Same for this Nick too: I make lists, all kinds of packing lists; no list

My longest trip consisted of three months by bicycle, followed by nine in a VW Westfalia camper, taking me through 15 countries in Europe and North Africa, from autumn, winter, spring and summer conditions, from bathing suit to parka. That was one heck of a packing challenge. A more recent one began with a flight from Ottawa to Vancouver, my dog and bicycle travelling in the Airbus cargo hold. Dog and I then hitchhiked and bicycled back all the way home, continued on to St. John’s, Nfld, then back home again. We were on the road from April to October. Carrying just the basics and a 17 pound dog on a bicycle did not leave room for

a tent. Because of that, most nights were spent under the stars. These days, packing for an airline trip without checked luggage is a challenge. Carry-on luggage cannot contain a nail file, scissors, aerosol cans, or even a container of water barely adequate to brew a cup of tea. After each trip, I revise my packing list as necessary, including deletions, additions and modifications. I end up with a fresh list of items, items I could take, but would not necessarily take. Oh yes, “Don’t leave home without it!” What is ‘it’? Your credit card. Try booking a flight or checking into a hotel without one.

covers all seasons, or all modes of travel. In the course of my over sixty years of independent travels, I’ve learned a lot. Much is based upon my mistakes. To err is human, but to make the same mistake again and again is just stupid. I have packing lists for wilderness hiking, whether it’s day hikes or multi-day ones. Needs differ for every season. The same can be said for wilderness canoeing and bicycle trips. In some ways, packing for car trips is far easier than the three previous modes; if you forget something, just pop into the closest corner store. OPINION

Being Wise Meanwhile, at the other side of the country, another Cornwall resident is riding out a extremely harsh life sentence in a federal prison that is never going to be labelled Club Med. Michael Woods was accused of being the ring leader of a drug trafficking outfit that operated out of Cornwall. He was extradited to the U.S. where he was put on trial. It is the kind of conviction that would have fetched no more than five or six years in Canada. Life in a U.S. federal prison usually means just that - life. Any where but the U.S., which has a tough approach to drug dealing that isn’t going to soften under the Trump administration, such a sentence for a first-time offender would be considered cruel and unusual punishment. Woods is doing his time at Hazelton, a maximum security prison in West Virginia. The 650,000-square -foot fortress, surrounded by three rows of barbed wire and six guard towers, has 1,300 inmates housed in 768 general cells and 120 special cells for real bad dudes. All are doing hard time. Back in November the joint was on lock down after an inmate was killed. According to a crime expert, the prison is infested with gangs. “It (prison) holds a lot of serious convicts. It can’t be any fun.” THIS WEEK IN 1948: Armed with search warrants and help from the Ontario Provincial Police, Cornwall Township police busted up eight illegal drinking establishments in East Cornwall, most of them south of Montreal Road between Marlborough Street and St. Felix Street. Police said the raids came after weeks of surveillance and undercover work. Police said they hoped the raids and arrests of operators and found-ins would send

a message to other illegal watering holes operating in the east end that it was time to close up shop or face the consequences. • A traffic signal was installed at McConnell Avenue and Montreal Road. • Cornwall Township Police Department was looking for a town constable. The starting salary was $1,600 a year, climbing to $1,800 after three months. Applicants needed at least one year of high school and be under age 35. • A 13-year-old boy was sentenced to an indefinite term at Alfred Training School after pleading guilty to stealing a family allowance cheque. •A 14-year-old convicted of stealing money from the alms box at Nativity Church was placed on one-year’s probation under the supervision of Joe St. Denis of the Our Citizens of Tomorrow (OCOT) program. • Construction of 20 new homes in the Riverdale subdivision was approved. The homes constructed of polished cement blocks would sell for $7,000 to $11,000. • Morris Merkley was given a building permit for construction of an auto accessory store on Pitt Street near Fifth Street. Estimated cost was $18,000. • Fire Chief Cory Moore ordered that three electric hot plates used in the refreshment booth to make french fries be turned off during hockey games. He said they were a fire hazard. TRIVIA ANSWER: Courtaulds (Canada) Ltd. put the lock on the gate of its east Cornwall plant in November 1992. Opened in 1924, the plant for many years was the city’s largest employer before falling on hard times. TRIVIA: In the early hours of July 14, 1970 this 4,000-ton laker sank in the St. Lawrence River just east of Morrisburg. Nine members of the crew, including the captain, died in the accident. HERE AND THERE: Hey, what happened to the

do-not-call list? ... Well, how did it feel to shovel 25 cm of global warming last week? • Why shouldn’t Cornwall Electric customers be part of the Wynne government’s 25% hydro bill reduction that will kick in this summer? In the long run, we are all going to be paying for it. •More evidence that there is life after death. Disgraced television evangelist Jim Bakker is back on TV with a half hour show that uses most its time begging for money. • Note to terrorists: Canada has a new law that forbids endangering cities and airports by flying drones in restricted air space. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: The Hollywood bombshells called Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Bo Derek, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch. They weren’t great actresses but who cared? • Bee Hive corn syrup hockey cards. • Wishing Well soft drinks. • Dow Kingsbeer. • Hillbilly Hoedowns at the Water Street Arena. • The Wonderland Pavilion just north of the city. The J. & S. Club in Massena. • When folks canned vegetables from backyard gardens at local canneries. Before the popularity of deep freezers folks kept meat in a rented locker at Stormont Cold Storage on Eleventh Street. •Jack’s Place and perch rolls in South Lancaster. • Old Chum pipe tobacco. •The $2.50 French buffet at the Cornwallis Hotel. In 1957 it was Cornwall’s first French buffet. • Bob Eadie’s weekly cartoon “Jest Around Cornwall” in the Standard-Freeholder. ... Harold Snetsinger’s grocery store in Ingleside. It was the first store in the new town and operated out of the front room of a home on Elm Street. He had been a grocery store operator in Dickinson’s Landing, which was wiped out by the St. Lawrence Power and Seaway Project.

Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings If you have to spend 21 years in the slammer, Terminal Island Prison just outside Los Angeles would be high on anyone’s list of mailing addresses. That is where Willie Wise, former Cornwall lawyer, city councillor (his campaign slogan was “Be Wise, Vote Wise”) and major junior hockey team, (Royals owner), is doing his time. Wise pleaded guilty in 2012 to his role in a $129.5 million Ponzi scheme that robbed many ordinary folks of their life savings. He was given a 262 month sentence. Terminal Island is a low security prison that once earned the moniker “Club Med”. As prisons go, it is pretty decent digs. In the 1980s, to make it look more like a prison than a resort, guards started wearing side arms and a barbed-wire fence was installed. This was about the same time six prison officials were charged with bribery, cover-ups and selling marijuana to inmates. One was the prison’s chief investigator. Charles Manson, Al Capone and Timothy Leary all did time at Terminal Island. Before the Helter Skelter killing spring, Manson was convicted of car theft and cheque fraud. He served two years. This was before Capone forgot to pay his income tax. Leary, a Harvard professor and LSD guru, was convicted of drug trafficking. It is not uncommon for a Canadian doing time for a non-violent crime to be shipped back to Canada, followed by early release, after one-third of the sentence in the U.S. is completed. Wise is about two years from that possibility and a get-out-of-jail card.

Global tech panel weighs in at local hackathon Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

From left, Kevin Lajoie moderated the Hack to the Future tech panel which included Sean Scrivener of Salesforce Ireland, Sage Franch of Microsoft Canada, Mark Rossetti of Code for America, Jason Shim from Pathways to Education, and Jessica Bredschneider of Benefits by Design (Alycia Douglass/TC Media).

CORNWALL, Ontario - After a week chock full of digital march break activities, Code Heroes hosted their largest hackathon to date. Featuring a tech panel from San Francisco to Dublin, the event allowed participants and spectators the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from industry professionals. “A lot of these kids were at the March Break Camp, and were really enthusiastic about it,” said Code Heroes founder, Kelly Bergeron.“So we encouraged them to come out and do the hackathon.” This time around the event featured two age groups; 8-15 and 16 and up. “Usually our hackathons are 12 and up, but we wanted to get some younger kids in to cultivate the interest at a younger age.” In an industry where women are still vastly outnumbered, Bergeron said that another happy feat was an increase in female participation. “At a certain age, girls do tend to drop off, so we’re just trying to keep the momentum,” said Bergeron. “It was really important for me to show some really successful, awesome speakers that were women so the girls can see that they can do that as well.” Panellists included Sean Scrivener of Salesforce Ireland, Sage Franch of Microsoft Canada, Mark Rossetti of Code for America, Jason Shim from Pathways to Education, and Jessica Bredschneider of Benefits by Design. Public Information Coordinator with the City of Cornwall and Pearl Jam enthusiast, Kevin Lajoie was on hand to moderate the panel, which touched on everything from advice to young tech enthusiasts to the future of technology.

“In the tech industry, the proof is in the pudding,” said Rossetti. “So when you reach a certain point, you’ve got to go make some pudding.” Franch said that one of the things she enjoys most about technology is its ever-changing nature, laughing that her job title of tech evangelist didn’t even exist when she was younger. “There’s so many jobs that you may work in the future that don’t even exist yet,” said Franch. The event wrapped up with presentations, with the youth award going to team Food World, winning $500. In the 16 and up category was team JOLT, also taking home a combined $500 in prize money.

Pancakes for a good cause

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Rotary Club of Cornwall is getting ready for their annual Pancake Breakfast this Saturday, March 25. Doors open at 7 a.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church and it is all you can eat for a full and delicious breakfast. Just $5 for adults and children under six are free. There will be around 40 volunteers made up of Rotary Club members and their family and friends who will be working hard to feed the scores of hungry supporters who come to the breakfast every year. This year in addition to the food there will also

be a silent auction with more than 100 items up for bid. The Pancake Breakfast is a tradition that goes back more than 35 years and has raised money for the Rotary Club that they have used to support projects in Cornwall, across the nation and across the world. The Rotary Club has supported the Benson Centre, they are also responsible for the outdoor gym in Lamoureux Park and they also have supported schools for children in Zimbabwe. These are just some of the more recent examples of the Rotary Club’s legacy of charity. Rotary Club Treasurer and Past President Tom Wallace wants everyone to come out for a good meal in support of a good cause. “Eat cheap and help the community,” he says.

Glengarry Memorial Hospital receives top marks Glengarry Memorial Hospital Handout ALEXANDRIA, Ontario - Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) has been awarded exemplary accreditation status from Accreditation Canada, an independent reviewer that assesses and recognizes organizational excellence. This year, the process was coordinated by Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and Project Manager Louise Quenneville, who deployed a passport framework to challenge staff to strengthen their awareness in six areas related to accreditation, including communications, safety culture, medication, and others. Biweekly prizes and a prominent display documenting the hospital’s progress through the accreditation “road trip” helped to cheer the organization on to success. Understanding the concept of “Reconciliation” Although often difficult to talk about and harder to accept, death is a natural part of our lives. It is a stage of the cycle of life. As death is natural, so is grief. It’s a normal reaction to loss, not a disease or a condition. It is part of our human existence. Often mourners are referred to as “recovering” from grief. This term is damaging because it implies that grief is an illness that must be cured. It also suggests that grief can be cured. Mourners don’t recover from grief. They become “reconciled” to it. In other words, they accept the reality of the death

and learn to live with it. Grief is not something that goes away like the measles. It forever remains with the mourner. Reconciliation comes in learning to live with the grief while being eternally changed by it. The words “recovering” also implies a return to the way things were before the death. This is impossible. The grief of a death is life altering. It is not something that one “gets over”. It affects people in varying degrees but the journey through grief impacts the mourner forever. Although mourners learn to live with grief, this does not mean that they live a life

1964

of misery. Reconciliation takes time, with growth often accompanying the healing. The bereaved person may not become truly reconciled to the loss for several years and even then will have “grief bursts” forever. The sense of loss remains, but mourners often find their lives potentially deeper and more meaningful after the death of someone they loved. No one wishes to take the journey through grief. But by understanding the concept of reconciliation, it is easier to understand the journey and its ultimate goal.

What to do following a death Death is a fact of life we must all face at some point. Dealing with the death of a loved one is difficult. Whether the death is anticipated or unexpected, we will be confronted with diverse emotions and critical decisions during a difficult time. Government issued death certificates contain the individual’s full name, gender, date of death, place of death, place of birth, marital status, usual residence of the deceased, registration number, and date of registration. Without a death certificate, you cannot legally remarry, arrange for disposition of remains, file for benefits, or access the financial accounts of the deceased. We hope the information and resources gathered on this site will be of assistance to you. - Call the attending physician if there is an expected death. If the death is unexpected, there is no doctor available and no emergency services in your area, or you are concerned or uncertain about the circumstances surrounding a death, contact your local coroner’s office or the Office of the Chief Coroner at http:// www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca/english/ DeathInvestigations/office_coroner/coroner. html. - If your arrangements will include a funeral or a direct disposition you may contact a

funeral home or a transfer service. All funeral homes must offer an inexpensive service known as ‘direct disposition’. Transfer Services are companies that may only offer the ‘direct disposition’ option. This option includes the removal of the deceased from the place of death, the placement of the body in a container or casket, the delivery of the body to the cemetery or crematorium and the filing of necessary documentation. It does not include visitation or services with the body present. Funeral directors can help you make all the arrangements for funerals. For more information, contact the Board of Funeral Services (416-979-5450 / 1 800 387-4458). - Should your arrangements also include burial or cremation the cemetery or crematorium you choose can help you make the necessary arrangements. If you have questions relating to cemeteries and crematoriums and the services and supplies that they offer, contact the Ministry of Government Services, Cemeteries Section (416-326-8393 / 1 800 268-1142). - There are organizations such as Bereaved Families of Ontario, the Ontario Psychological Association, and Distress Centres who can help you through this time.

If a person dies in Canada, the death must be registered with the government of the province where the death occurred. A funeral director usually oversees the process of death registration. To register a death, the funeral director submits two completed documents to the applicable provincial authority: (1) the death certificate; and (2) a statement of death. (The title of this form varies between provinces.) Information that is gathered from death registrations about causes of death can be used for medical/health research or statistics. The Death Certificate: When there is a death, the attending physician, a nurse practitioner or a coroner, completes an official form indicating the cause of death. He or she gives the death certificate to the funeral director with the body of the deceased or sends it to the funeral director after the body has been collected. The Statement of Death: The funeral director completes this form with help from a person who knew the deceased, typically a family member. If a relative is unavailable, an adult that lived with the deceased or knew the deceased may be able to supply the required information. The form asks personal information about

Washing painted walls is faster and cheaper than painting them. If you have your walls professionally washed, you’ll probably spend a great deal less than you would for a professional paint job. Practice the two-bucket technique to make your cleaning solution last longer. Rinse and sqeeze the dirt from your wall-washing rag into a bucket of water before dipping it into the cleaning solution bucket. Rinsing will help prevent streaking. Use only white, offwhite or color-fast cloths to wash walls and celings; some dye in colored cloths may stain the surface. As a resting place for lint and other residue, baseboards are usually the dirtiest part of the room. Wash them last after you have washed the walls.

Billards takes aim against epilepsy Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rack-Em-Up Billiards hosted their first annual Break 4 Epilepsy event this Saturday, March 18. The 9 Ball tournament drew 36 competitors and managed to raise $1100.00 in support of epilepsy research. “All the funds raised today are going to Epilepsy Ottawa,” said owner, Doug Disotell. “In previous years, we’ve held this event for Did it for Heart and Stroke, but this year, we opted to support a cause that was even closer to home.” Disotell’s neice, Tiffany Boucher, says that this tournament ‘means the world’ to her. Boucher’s six-year-old daughter, Payson was diagnosed with epilepsy, and suffers multiple seizures per day. “Epilepsy Ottawa really helps give families in need the support to deal with the illness,” said Boucher. March 26, 2017 is Purple Day; an international effort which hopes to raise epilepsy awareness

by encouraging people to wear purple. Boucher says that the tournament was a great way for people to acknowledge the cause in a way they could enjoy. “I’ve been wanting to do something for Purple Day, but each year, my daughter has been in the hospital with seizures or other medical issues stemming from the seizures,” said Boucher. Disotell says that he was impressed with the turnout. “We’ve got people coming from all over,” said Disotell. “The people that are here are diehard pool players, and the support we’ve received throughout the event has been overwhelming.” The event wrapped up Sunday, March 19 with Disotell already discussing next year’s tournament. “We threw this together in about three weeks,” said Disotell. “Now we’ve got a full year to work on the next one. “I see what my niece goes through,” said Disotell. “This is a cause we want to continue supporting.”

EOHU cutting office space to save costs Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - At a meeting of the United Counties Council on Monday, March 20, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) explained that they would be reducing their office space in four of their locations. “We are downsizing our offices to cut down on occupancy costs, but we are in no way reducing

our services,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, the EOHU’s Medical Officer of Health. “We will be investing more in mobile technology and I see this as us being in the community more rather than less.” The EOHU will be reducing its office space in Winchester, Alexandria, Hawkesbury and Rockland. Dr. Roumeliotis explained however, that the location of some of these offices will remain essentially the same. “Our building in Cornwall is

old, but I have good news,” he said. “If we are building a new building, all of that money will be funded from the Ministry (of health). For the first time ever, the Health Unit’s are being treated by the Ministry like hospitals.” It was then brought up that if the EOHU was looking for a new building, then maybe they should be looking to move to a new community entirely.

“If they serve all of SD&G, maybe they should move to a more central location for their main office, like Monkland or Finch,” said Councillor Chris McDonell. Councillor Duncan pointed out however, that the EOHU owns the land next to their current location on Pitt St. in Cornwall, so it would be unlikely that they would be looking for new real estate.
