CORNWALL, Ontario - With the Blazersí season just around the corner, team coaches recently banded together in support of a new initiative. The Seaway Valley Blazers recently kicked off a new charity event. (Alycia Douglass/TC Media) This Sunday, March 26, the Benson Centre hosted the first ever Blazers Kick for Charity Soccer Tournament. Coach of the U15 Girls team, Angela Aubin says that itís a great kick start event to open the season. The Blazerís season is starting officially in the next couple of weeks, so we thought this would be a good way to kick off the season,î said Aubin. ìItís also a great opportunity to get the kids to work together and get to know one another and not just be stuck with the same team.î

Coaches presented various charities to the kids, and from there, teams narrowed down their options. From there, teams would face off in support of their charity, with all proceeds being donated to the winning teamís charity. Among those selected were the Childrenís Treatment Centre, Beyond 21, the Canadian Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall and SDG, and Rachelís Kids. While only one charity will benefit from proceeds, five will receive increased awareness through the event. ìThis the first time weíve had this event, but it already looks like weíll be repeating it in the fall at the end of our season, and hopefully again in the spring,î said Aubin. ìIt shows the kids that they can give back to the community while still having fun and getting practise time in.î While the spirit of competition was alive and

Nationals first season in the books The Cornwall Nationals inaugural season in the Federal Hockey League came to an end on Saturday night at the Civic Complex. The Berlin River Drivers skated to a 6-3 victory over the Nationals in front of 713 fans. Jay Croop opened the scoring for the Nationals 5:06 into the contest when he pounced on a rebound and finished with a backhanded shot over a sprawling Cory Simons. Berlin quickly leveled the score when Yuto Osawa, left all alone in front of Josselin St. Pierre, buried a wrist shot at 7:30 of the opening frame.

The River Drivers took a 2-1 lead when Patrick Harrison trickled over the goal line for a powerplay marker with 4:36 to play in the first. Moments later, with 2:03 remaining in the period, Jan Salak banged in John Celli’s rebound to give Berlin a two-goal lead. Mitchell Porowski fired an absolute blast past Simons with 3:07 to play in the second period as Cornwall crept to within a goal. Harrison beat St. Pierre with a nifty deke for his second of the contest at 4:02 of the third, but MJ Graham got the goal back for Cornwall just

The Big Leagues Cornwall has never had a Major League pitcher to cheer for but Jim Deshaies, a starter for 12 seasons, comes close. The Massena native who was drafted by the Yankees in the 12th round in 1982 has a strong connection to Cornwall. His late mother (nee Fox) hailed from Cornwall. He has relatives living in the city. He was first drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1978 while pitching for Massena Central High School but he elected not to sign. Instead, he took a scholarship from Le Moyne College in Syracuse. The 6-foot-4 southpaw appeared in a couple of late season games with the Yankees in 1985 before being traded to Houston Astros for Joe Niekro. In his rookie season with the Astros he set a team record with 12 mound wins. On Sept.

23, 1986 he set a Major League record by striking out the first eight Dodgers’ batters he faced. Another Major League milestone he has claimed ownership of is for most at-bats without an extra base hit - 373. From 1986 to 1991 he was one of the Astros most reliable starters. His best season came in 1989 when he went 15-10 with a 2.91 ERA and 153 strikeouts. After the Astros he played for four teams then retired in 1995. But he soon found himself back with the Astros, this time in the broadcast booth where he spent 17 season. In 2010 Deshaies received the Lone Star Emmy for Broadcasting Excellence. In 2013 he joined the Chicago Cubs’ TV broadcast crew. His contract runs through 2019. In high school he acquired the nickname Ace which he quietly shelved when he turned pro. In an interview with the Watertown Times, Deshaies said growing up in Northern New York

State was an advantage for him. “Because of the winter weather, I wasn’t out there playing baseball 12 months out of a year,” he said. “I think my arm was able to last a little longer.” TICK OF THE SPORTS CLOCK This week in 1965 the Smiths Falls Bears, Central Junior Hockey League champions, lost 5-3 to Quebec Junior Hockey League champion Lachine Maroons in the final of the Eastern Canada Memorial Cup semifinal round-robin in Sydney, N.S. The Bears added three Cornwall Royals Jean Payette, Ron Ward and Ray Barnes - to their line-up for the series. Ward’s season was extended when Lachine added him to its lineup for the Eastern Canada final against Niagara Falls Flyers. ... Norm McCrimmon, president of the Cornwall Wildcats, announced that the team was leaving the Seaway Junior Lacrosse League for the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League. He planned to add three or four senior players to the lineup. ... Ed Blue (908), Ernie Hamel (905) and Dick Legault (905) had high triples in Men’s City League play at Olympia Bowl. ... Harvey Villeneuve was elected president of the North End Fastball League. Pat O’Neill was past president. ... Kenny Wharram scored the game winner as Chicago Blackhawks defeated Montreal Canadiens 3-1 to prevent the Habs

from taking a 3-0 stranglehold in the Stanley Cup final. Phil Esposito and Chico Maki scored the other Chicago goals. John Ferguson had the Montreal goal. BITES AND PIECES Jesse Winchester has launched a new career. Brockville Braves of the Central Canada Hockey League have hired him as the club’s third head coach is as many years. ... You can count on one hand the number of times there has been no hockey - junior or professional - played at the LumDome in earlyApril. ... Los Angeles Kings have won two Stanley Cups in the last five seasons with Darryl Sutter behind the bench. Yet they fired him for missing out on a playoff birth this season. That is setting the bar pretty high for the next coach. ... Travel won’t get any easier for the Federal Hockey League Nationals in 2017-18. WinstonSalem, N.C. is set to join the league next season. That’s an 800-mile, 14-hour (by bus) road trip. ... Well, you gotta admit, it is a bit weird but nevertheless touching. Some of Bob Probert’s ashes were sprinkled in the Joe Louis Arena penalty box by his widow, Dani, following the Detroit Red Wings final game in the building. The exceptionally talented tough guy spent a lot of time in the penalty box in his playing days in Motown. The Wings will play in new digs next season.

On Sunday’s semi finals the Typhoons faced the Whitby Wolves winning the game 4-1 and advancing to the Provincial Championship gold medal game. The undefeated Typhoons faced the undefeated South Huron Sabres. The game was exciting and intense as both teams battled hard to win the Provincial banner after the 1st period the game was 0-0 but a couple of penalties against the Typhoons in the 2nd period resulted in a 2-0 deficit. Regrouping for the 3rd period the Typhoons came out strong and scored a goal making it a 2-1. The Typhoons battled hard, pulling their goalie to try and tie up the game but in the end the Sabres netted an empty goal to make it 3-1 and captured the Provincial Championship Gold banner. The Cornwall Bantam B Typhoons are the OWHA Provincial Silver medalist. There were 58 Bantam B teams in Ontario this season and only 24 teams can qualify for this Provincial tournament. Just qualifying for the tournament is a great accomplishment on its own and this team finished 2nd in the Province of Ontario. The Typhoons had a very successful 20162017 season. The team competed in 62 games with a record of 42 win, 12 loses, 8 ties and an impressive 146 GF/54 GA record. The Typhoons attended 5 tournaments and won Gold in 4 of these tournaments. The team had a very successful regular season and playoff run in ODWHA league play. The Typhoons ended up tied for 1st place in the playoffs and qualified to play for the ODWHA Championship on April 2nd. The game would be tied 1-1 after regulation play, resulting in overtime and no winner, a shoot out would be needed to determine a winner and the Typhoons lost this game 2-1. The coaching staff would like to congratulate these young ladies on a great season.

The Cornwall Bantam B Typhoons have completed their season at the Ontario Women`s Hockey Association Provincial Tournament (OWHA) in Toronto. This season there were 58 Bantam B hockey teams in Ontario and all with the same goal of qualifying for OWHA Provincials. Only 24 teams can qualify and in order to qualify each team must compete against other teams in their Region in a Playdown series. For the Typhoons their Region is along the 401 highway from the Quebec border to Napanee. The opponents for the Typhoons were the Napanee Crunch. The Playdown series was a best 2 out of 3 games which the Typhoons won 6-0 and 4-0, qualifying the team to participate in the OWHA Provincial tournament. The Typhoons competed in the OWHA Provincial tournament on April 7 - 9, 2017 in Toronto and their first opponents on Friday were the Barrie Sharks and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The second opponents on Friday were the Wallaceburg Lakers and the Typhoons won 3-2. On Saturday the Typhoon faced off against the Stoney Creek Sabres and would emerge victorious with a 4-1 win placing the Typhoons 1st in their Pool. This quarter final game on Saturday would be the Typhoons 3rd game of the day and the opposition would be a league rival, the Nepean Wildcats. whose right hand had a deadly effect on him, giving him the knockout before the end of the first round. Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for. The excitement, palpable in the arena as Luis stepped into the ring, embracing fans along the way. A resounding chant of ‘Tony! Tony!’ echoing through the Civic Complex, Luis looked stoic. Stepping fully into the role of coach, father, Jorge Luis had to rein Tony in a few times during the first and second rounds, reminding him to ‘stay small,’ and pace himself.

In the third round, Luis’ deadly combinations sent Nuñez to his knees, whose final attempts were dashed by Luis’ incessant body shots, ultimately costing him the fight. With a knockout into the seventh round, Luis successfully upped his record to 23-3. “I think my opponent was one tough customer,” said Luis. “I think he might have given some other guys a pretty long night.” After the fight, Luis gave an honourable mention to long time boxing promoter and mentor, Bob Miller who had been paralyzed in a car accident, and was ringside at the event. “He’s in his own fight now and he’s deter-

mined to get his body back,” said Luis. Father, Jorge Luis could not have been any prouder, but he was certainly relieved to put the fight behind him. “I died a hundred deaths this past week,” said Jorge. “I was so stressed leading up to the fight, but Tony was well-prepared and we worked as a great team out there.” Daughter, Vanessa Luis was also present in the singing of the National Anthem, which admittedly, had Jorge ‘pretty choked up.’ “I’m very lucky to have such great kids,” said Jorge. “I couldn’t be happier.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Civic Complex was alive with energy this Saturday, Apr. 15 as thousands came out to enjoy an evening of live professional boxing. Headlining the Liveco Boxing card was hometown hero, Tony Luis – fighting perhaps the most difficult match of his career against Mexican Noe ‘El Dengue’ Nuñez. Another local on the card was Akwesasne native, Ronnie ‘Rocket’ Robidoux fighting Jesus Ortega. Opening the card was 19-year-old California-native Brandon ‘El Pantera’ Andujo up against P.G. Tondo of the Philippines fighting in the Super Flyweight division. After four intense rounds, a draw was called, with Andujo receiving majority vote, scoring 39-37. Up next was Mississauga’s Michael Brandon fighting Mexico’s Michell Polina, as welterweights squared off for a four-round bout. Chris Johnson is known to be one of the more vocal trainers in the league, and reminded Brandon to ‘keep dancing’ around his opponent before concluding in a unanimous 40-36 victory. With local fans supporting him, Akwesasne’s Ronnie ‘Rocket’ Robidoux stepped into the ring against Jesus Ortega. Picking up the pace heading into the fourth round, Robidoux put up a relentless fight, leaving him undefeated at 4-0 2KO. Next on the card was Albany native, ‘ILL’ Will Madera against Mexico’s Omar Valenzuela, who took a protection count in the first round before being down for the count in the fifth of a scheduled eight rounds, bringing Madera to 9-0. The next eight-round match featured Mexican powerhouse Alfredo ‘Matador’ Chavez against Canadian Olympian, Custio Clayton of Nova Scotia. Hoping for redemption after two losses, Chavez was no match for Clayton,
