Big Bike rides again Alycia Douglass alycia.douglass@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - This weekend, teams will be pedaling through Cornwall in support of the Heart and Stoke Foundation. The 20-minute circuit will begin at the Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAFA) wing, heading right on Water, down to Cumberland and back. Teams will consist of a maximum of 29 riders, equipped with music, noise makers, and a
healthy dose of enthusiasm. In order to ride the bike, all cyclists must commit to donate a minimum of $50. With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death for Canadian men and women, riders are hoping to do their part in the fight against heart disease by raising funds. All proceeds raised through Big Bike will help support the Heart and Stroke Foundation, helping to fund critical heart and stroke research. Program Coordinator, Kasie Glenn says that these kinds of events help, not only by raising

The Big Bike for Heart and Stroke will take place this Saturday and Sunday.
While the event’s main goal is to raise money for a worthy cause, Glenn says that it’s designed to be fun for participants. “It’s a really great way for employees to come together, too,” said Glenn. “Physically, they have to work together, but I think it really goes beyond that.” For more information about the Heart and Stroke Foundation, check out their website.
money, but also awareness. “It’s really the perfect fundraiser, because it promotes a healthy lifestyle,” said Glenn. “It gets people out and moving, even if it is only for 20 minutes.” The event is set to take place both Saturday and Sunday Apr. 22-23, as well as a third ride on Friday Apr. 28 at La Citadelle, which will be the first time local high schools have been involved.

Cornwall Innovation Centre Announces First Participants in Lead To Win Program
The Cornwall Innovation Centre is proud to announce that three ventures were given “Green” ratings and are top contenders for the Lead To Win program. “We were very impressed by the level of pitches,” said John Rattray, a member of the fourmember review panel and co-chair of the CIC’s Board of Directors. “It’s a sure sign of the strength of ideas and the power of our local entrepreneurs.” A total of eight participants from six ventures pitched their business plans to a review panel made up of local business professionals including Rattray, Lesley Lang of the Community Future Development Corporation, Gerry Benson of The Benson Group, and Tom Kaneb of Gus-Kan ULC. Each entrepreneur had 20 minutes with the panel—10 minutes to present and 10 minutes to answer questions. The pitches came from entrepreneurs in varied fields, including agri-tech, digital media, consulting and tech. The review panel tallied results and rated each venture Green, Yellow or Red. “Green” ventures are now subject to a further and final review of their growth plans, and successful candidates will be welcomed into Lead To Win. “Yellow” ventures were directed to continue to build their business case and invited to return to pitch at future events. “Red” ventures were alerted to deficiencies in their plans and advised to rework their approach.

In light of the Fentanyl issue taking place across Canada, a number of community agencies from Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry as well as Prescott-Russell have come together to hold several forums during the month of May for parents and students about Fentanyl and other substances that young people may take. The forums, titled Fentanyl and Other Substances – Awareness and Prevention, will provide parents and students with information on Fentanyl and opioids in general, as well as other types of drugs. The presentations will also provide parents with tips about how to talk to their teens about drugs and strategies they can use to keep their kids safe. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the EOHU, encourages parents to attend one of the forums because they can really make a difference when it comes to keeping their kids safe. “Fentanyl has been found in a variety of both fake prescription pills as well as street drugs, so it’s very important for parents to have a discussion with their kids about the dangers of these substances.”

Discover Camp Kagama through the eyes of a first-timer Hanout from Camp Kagama
Lawrence River. I stayed in authentic cabins that really enhanced that outdoor camp feeling. And that wasn’t all. Every night I sat around a campfire with other campers, counsellors and staff and sang camp songs, I played games which had us all running around the camp campus, laughing while competitively trying to win for our teams. And I went on hikes to the Upper Canada Bird Sanctuary and to other nearby locations. Camp Kagama offered me lots of firsts and went above and beyond in delivering that authentic, traditional camp experience to a first-timer like myself. It was my first time completely on my own as well without my friends and family by my side, but that was accompanied with having the exciting opportunity to make new friends. What I came to realize at the end of the summer is that the people I met at camp are more than just friends. Camp Kagama is a place that easily becomes your second home - a place that will welcome you back with open arms year after year.
To end, I want to reveal that I am not, and never was, a camper at Camp Kagama or any other camp for that matter. I was the Camp Administrator and Waterfront Supervisor during the summer of 2016. That said, my experiences very much mirror those of a first-time camper who is worried about the prospect of staying at an overnight camp with people they do not know. I discovered Camp Kagama. And this adventure was the most enriching one I have ever had in my 21 years, and one which I would not trade for anything in this world. Beanie (Deena Zand Vakili)

The thought of being at an overnight camp for the very first time was a scary one. It was not something I had ever experienced before and I was not sure what to expect. As someone who lives in the city and always has lived in a downtown area, being out in nature
away from “city life” was a first for me. It was scary, but it was a good kind of scary. The best comparison I can think of is the good kind of scary you feel on your first day of school. When I arrived, my initial thoughts were on how open and green it was. Camp Kagama is on the St. Lawrence River and the location is breathtaking. At camp, I did things I have never done before. I went canoeing. I swam in the St.

CORNWALL, Ontario - There was something for everyone at the third annual Cornwall and Area Pop Event (CAPE) this weekend. The event is known for being one of the more family friendly conventions in the area, and drew in its fair share of young fans. Returning exhibitor, Dave Martin of KahBoom Komics says that seeing families come out is one of his favourite parts of taking part in smaller conventions. “There are more families, because it’s more obtainable for the price point,” said Martin. “We do shows that are more attuned to that sort of thing, and we try to have product for that.” Featuring celebrity guests, Sean Gunn, Yanic Truesdale, Michael Copon, Michael Koske, and Christian Potenza, to name a few, the weekend was chock-full of people and things to see. Another cool stop on the endless list of photo opportunities was the Jeep from Jurassic Park. New to this year’s event was the first-ever cosplay contest, as well as a beer produced for
sample at the event by Rurban Brewing. Organizer, Randy Sauve says that he’s floored by the community support he’s received to date. “It was overwhelming – I think just the sheer amount of families coming out is wonderful,” said Sauve. “And it’s something we try and promote year after year.” Sauve says that celebrity guests really appreciated having their younger fans out to enjoy the event – something they don’t often see at larger conventions. “There’s also a lot more cosplay,” said Sauve. “It’s grown by leaps and bounds this year.” Chris Leger, also known as The Vintage Toy Man, says that for a long time, the name of the game was collecting. “I used to attend all kinds of these conventions, and have obviously amassed a good collection,” said Leger. “My house looks like ComicCon all the time.” In terms of plans for next year’s event, Sauve says that the planning never really stops. “When it’s all over, we take a day off,” said Sauve. “Then it’s back to work as usual.”

SOUTH LANCASTER, Ontario - United States President Donald Trump took aim at Canadian dairy producers on Tuesday, April 18 calling the supply management system “unfair”. One Glengarry dairy business says however, Canada’s rules just encourages Canadians to buy domestic products. “The supply management system has been in place since the early 70s,” said Margaret Morris of Glengarry Fine Cheese. “It makes us buy Canadian.” Trump made his comments to factory workers in Wisconsin, a major American dairy producing state. “We are also going to stand up for our dairy farmers in Wisconsin. And I’ve been reading about it, I’ve been talking about it for a long time, and that demands, really, immediately, fair trade, with all of our trading partners. And that includes Canada,” he said. “Because in Canada, some very unfair things have happened to our dairy farmers and others.” The speech was made in part to promote Trump’s new “Buy American, hire American” Executive Order which is meant to encourage American citizens to not buy imported products. Morris said that levels of American dairy exports are decreasing. She said that the Canadian system of management, regulation and standards encourages Canadians to buy domestic.
Margaret Morris of Glengarry Fine Cheese in South Lancaster shows off some of her cheese products in her show on Wednesday, April 19 (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media). “The laws here in Canada protect farmers and the product,” she said. “It shows that we care. It is good quality milk because it is so regulated.” Morris also noted that American dairy producers use hormones and antibiotics while their Canadian counterparts do not. She went on to say though that there are deep connections between the two industries.
“The whole dairy market is really intertwined,” she said. “There are some Canadian companies that use significant American products. We use American ingredients.” Ultimately, Morris feels that Trump’s was playing to his audience. “He was standing in Wisconsin, a huge dairy state and he was saying what he had to say to stay popular,” she said.

If users fail to bring the device back before the agreed 10-day rental period, the data would be turned off. Library staff are currently undergoing training on the devices, and any issues that may arise once the project is officially launched. This program will allow users who do not have internet access at home the opportunity to use the internet for their various needs. It will also give users access to unlimited data, making school projects, job applications, and everything in between an easier feat for those
living without Wi-Fi. According to the World Bank’s 2016 World Development Report, 60 percent of the world’s population do not have access to the Internet. Funded by the United Counties, Wallwork says it’s an expansion on services already offered by the library. “We’re very excited to offer this to the public,” said Wallwork. “We think it’s an excellent way to continue providing information to those who need it.” Similar internet lending services are already in existence, and have received high praise from those using the service.

Continued marijuana prohibition will not stop “shatter” production Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Over the past month two different fires in the City of Cornwall were linked to the production of “shatter”, a wax or taffy like substance created from marijuana oil. To make shatter one has to heat it up with butane lighters, sometimes this process can get out of control and lead to tragic results, as it did in the case of the fire on Carleton Street in late March where a 67-year-old man lost his life because someone was making shatter in his building. In that case, the individual in question was trying to add Isoamyl to his mix of shatter, a type of clear alcohol. Later in the month, another fire, this time on First Street, was also attributed to the production of shatter. “Not only is the practice illegal, it is very dangerous and unpredictable. You are basically in your house with a time bomb” stated S/
Sgt Frazer of the Cornwall Community Police Service in a rare public warning from our police and fire services. In the wake of both fires, there were those in the comment section who remarked that the decision of Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to move to legalize marijuana would only encourage further dangerous behaviour. My opinion is that those who want to use marijuana to make shatter will continue to do so regardless of whether the base drug is legal or not. Prohibition creates a black market to serve a prohibited demand and the funds of that black market go on to fund more deadly criminal enterprises. With government regulation of marijuana, the proceeds of the sale of that drug will now at least go to the government rather than any criminal organization. Some critics say that government weed will be so costly and over regulated that the black market trade will simply continue, as it has with illegal tobacco and that is very
and buy your marijuana there, also there is the convenience of not worrying about becoming a criminal. When marijuana is legal, there will still be using it for illegal or dangerous purposes, but at least this legislation will be taking a lot of money out of the hands of drug dealers.
possible, but it is doubtful that the black market trade will still be as lucrative as it is now. After all, many people still buy their tobacco from the store rather than going through an illegal smuggler. It is more convenient in many ways. For one, if the local store is selling it, it is much more simple just to walk down
Honorary Canadian Citizen Malala Yousafzai The Pakistani education activist has become an honorary Canadian citizen. This rare honor was bestowed to her by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a ceremony full of pomp and ceremony two weeks ago. Yousafzai shot to fame after miraculously surviving a Taliban assassination attempt. She was shot by a Taliban gunman in the head in 2012 as she was leaving school in her native Pakistan’s Swat Valley, northwest of the country’s capital, Islamabad. She now resides in Britain, where she received medical treatment after she was shot.
Her dream is to finish her secondary education and then study philosophy, politics and economics at a university. Meanwhile, she actively continues to promote the rights of girls and women to go to school. Now 19, Yousafzai was the youngest person to win the Nobel peace prize in 2014 when she was 17. Yousafzai became the sixth person to be awarded the distinction of being an honorary Canadian. This impressive event marked the end of nearly four years of effort, first by the previous Tory government and then by the current Trudeau government, to recognize the young activist’s achievements in promoting the rights
of females to get education. Others who have been recognized with honorary Canadian citizenship include Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped Jews during the Nazi rule in Germany, the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader, South African freedom fighter and former president Nelson Mandela, His Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims and the founder of a charitable foundation to fight global poverty and the current Burmese leader Aung San Sun Kyi. What binds them all together is that they are leaders who have played iconic roles in world history. Yousafzai, on accepting the honorary citizenship, praised Canada throughout an inspiring and touching speech at the special joint
session of Parliament and the Senate attended by foreign diplomats and invited guests, who included the activist’s parents. The initial ceremony was cancelled by a gunman’s rampage on Parliament Hill. “The man who attacked Parliament Hill called himself a Muslim…but he did not share my faith. He did not share the faith of one and a half billion Muslims living in peace around the world,” emphasized Yousafzai. Islam, she said, is a religion of learning, compassion and mercy. “I am a Muslim and I believe that when you pick up a gun in the name of Islam and kill innocent people, you are not a Muslim anymore.”

opinion that the light switches were in the on position. While it was above freezing with a light rain the night of his disappearance it turned cold and snowed the next day, which would have covered any tire tracks. The canal also froze over erasing any evidence of something going through the thin layer of ice. Three days later hundreds attended the funeral service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Maxville. OPP and city police announced that the mysterious case of the missing reeve was closed. TRIVIA It is called the Ramada Inn today but when the Brookdale Avenue hotel opened with 118 rooms in the 1970s it carried this chain’s name. TRIVIA ANSWER Until Gerald Parisien was elected Cornwall’s mayor in 1974 - on his third attempt - it was considered a part-time position. Most of the mayors before Parisien were business people with another source of income. However, Parisien had to give up his job in radio when he was elected. Council voted to make it a full-time position which came with improved salary and benefits. Parisien held the job until 1985 when he retired. He died in April 1993. CIRCA THIS WEEK 1957 - The overnight theft of a 400-pound safe that was carried out the front door of the Dominon Store in Morrisburg had police baffled. It contained $2,500. The money was kept in the safe because the local bank was closed on Sundays. Based on footprints in the store, it was believed two people were involved in the theft. ... The local immigration office called the arrival of 21 Hungarian refugees a “serious situation.” Officials
said they were scrambling to find accommodations and jobs for the new arrivals. The latest arrivals brought the number of Hungarian refugees to 80. All fled their homeland after a ruthless Soviet crackdown. ... City firefighters were called to eight grass fires in a 24-hour period. ... J.J. Sones was made a life member of the Kinsmen Club. ... Canadian Cottons honoured long-service employees at a banquet. Melio Contant and Joseph Piquette received 45-year service pins. ... Howard Smith Paper Mill longservice dinner saw six employees receive 40-year pins. They were P. J. Gillie, J. H. Lefebvre, E.A. Sabourin, R. H. Tilton, W. Quenneville and T. R. Villeneuve. HSPM president E. Howard Smith presented the longservice pins. ... Edo Plant on Highway 2 at Grey’s Creek planned to hire 100 people. The plant would manufacture electronic navigational instruments. ... Three local Boy Scouts were selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in England. They were Otto Vass, Ian MacDonald and Don Duffy. ... W. L. Courville, city assessment officer, said 513 property tax appeals had been received by his department. Of those, 316 claimed they were over-assessed. ... The public school board was asked to approve additions to Gladstone and Vincent Massey elementary schools. The average class size at Gladstone was 41 while it was 39 at Vincent Massey. The board was told that enrolment in 1957-58 was expected to grow by 125 at each school. ONE LAST THING The fact that there’s a “Highway to Hell” and only a “Stairway to Heaven” says a lot about anticipated traffic numbers.

When prominent and much respected Maxville businessman William (Bill) MacEwen went missing on Jan. 21, 1957 one of the largest manhunts in United Counties history was launched. The 63-year-old founder of Maxville Feed and Grain had been village reeve since 1948. Not only winning every election but doing so unopposed. He was arguably one of the bestknown figures in Glengarry County. Police first thought that perhaps MacEwen had suffered a heart attack on his way home from Cornwall, where he was last seen around 9 p.m. in the United Counties building parking lot, Water and Pitt streets. Within 24 hours of the reeve being reported missing search parties fanned out in the Maxville area. Hundreds joined the search organized by Osie Villeneuve and Dr. D.M. Gamble. After the first two days when, as the Standard-Freeholder reported, “every lane and road” in the district was searched, police concluded that the reeve was the victim of foul play. An OPP inspector arrived from Toronto to assist Maxville village police chief R.H. Hawkeshaw and the local OPP detachment. City police inspector Edward Osler went to Maxville to assist. A helicopter from Rockcliffe airport joined the search. Thousands of pamphlets and posters with MacEwen’s photo were distributed in the Maxville area and in Cornwall. His photo was shown on CBC TV Ottawa. A $1,500 reward was posted.
Police reported that MacEwen was believed to be carrying around $300 in cash when he disappeared. This added to their theory that he was a victim of foul play. As days dragged into weeks with not a single clue unearthed, the search for the missing businessman/reeve slipped to the backburner. Then late afternoon of March 18 two Howard Smith Paper Mill watchmen, doing their rounds behind the mill, saw something just above the surface of the Cornwall Canal. Clinton Sayyeau tossed a rock at the object. He soon realized it was the roof of a car. His partner Bernard Terrance ran back to the mill and called police. Five hours later a crane brought to the scene pulled a grey Buick from the canal. MacEwen’s body was inside. The roof of the car, submerged in 15 feet of water, became exposed after the annual spring lowering of the canal water started that morning. As news of the discovery quickly spread, an estimated 1,000 people gathered near the scene. The next day, after and autopsy was performed, police announced that drowning was the cause of death. Police came to the conclusion that MacEwen missed turning onto Brookdale Avenue while travelling west on Water Street and found himself on the Water Street extension behind the mill. While trying to turn around his car slipped over the canal bank and into the water. Visibility was not good and the light rain made roads slippery. Police said the car was in reverse gear and

Three Cornwall Catholic schools proposed for closure Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) staff is proposing to close three cornwall schools in their final Pupil Accommodation Review report to their trustees for their May 2 meeting. The report proposes that Immaculate Conception Catholic School, St. Columban’s Catholic School and Sacred Heart Catholic school all be closed between June 30, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Students from Immaculate Conception would be sent to Bishop Macdonell and St.
f
Peter’s and that St. Columbans and Sacred Heart be combined into one Sacred Heart school in a new building possibly at a new location. The plan also proposes that all remaining elementary schools become Jk-to Grade 6 schools and that 7-8 students be sent to St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School. The report states that an addition to St. Joe’s may have to be added in order to accommodate all incoming 7 & 8 students. The report suggests that changes be made to the high school and elementary school boundries, so some students at schools not closing and who are not in Grade 7 & 8 might

still get moved under this plan. Maps on the proposed boundary changes can be found here. The final proposed suggestion in the report is that St. Matthew’s Catholic school be moved to a new, bigger location so that it too may accommodate grade 7 & 8 students from its feeder schools. If followed through, the report’s recommendations would eliminate 697 empty spaces in the CSDBEO in Cornwall, which translates into a 97 percent utilization rate through to 2029. The CDSBEO trustees will vote on this plan at their meeting on May 2.

To get rid of hard-water rust stains on commodes, tubs, and sinks, just squeeze a little tooth paste onto an old brush and scrub away. Or scrub the stain with a paste of borox and lemon juice or a solution of equal parts of turpentine and salt. Whichever method you choose, attack rust stains right away. The sooner you deal with them, the easier they are removed.

No memorial for Bob Turner, for now Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - It was revealed during the April 24 session of Cornwall City Council that a plan to name the pads at the Benson Centre after Bob Turner, Si Miller and Sewsy Lalonde would not be possible, this year. The rights to the names of the pads at the Benson Centre and of teh facility itself are owned by various organizations through term limited sponsorship agreements. Pads 1, 2 and 3 are named after Cornwall Professional Firefighters, the Rotary Clubs and Lahaie & Sullivan respectively for $125, 000, $100, 000 and $75, 000 respectively. The sponsorship deals are all in their seventh
year of 10 year contracts and cannot be renamed until these contracts expire. Administration offered the following alternatives as sites to be named after Bob Turner, or Si Miller or Newsy Lalonde Lamoureux Park Splashpad, Marina 200, Potential Future Benson Centre Facilities (ie. gymnasium, football field, soccer field), Broadview Park, Dover Heights Park, Heritage Park, Riverdale Park and Meadowvale Park. Bob Turner was the first black Recreation Director in the history of the City of Cornwall and of Ontario. The Bob Turner Memorial arena was named in his honour until it was torn down in 2013. Councillor Claude McIntosh originally floated the idea of renaming the pads at the Benson
Centre after the three famous Cornwallites. “Its with mixed emotions that I receive this report,” he said. “I’ve always been involved in Civil Rights. Was turned back at the border going to Selma. He was the first black Recreation Director in Ontario, possibly first black Recreation Director in Canada. There was a small group trying to drive him out. It was a defining moment for the City. Council held emergency meeting that night and said they would back him, kids outside begging him to stay. and in the end he said he’d stay. “We name buildings after people and then tear them down and forget about them,” he continued. “Perhaps a couple years down the road a couple of ideas will bear fruit.”
Fleeing violence, immigrant crosses into Canada illegally at Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - A Brazilian national living in the United States illegally was recently caught crossing into Canada at Cornwall. The CBC reported that the 32-year-old Brazilian man fled gang violence in his home country to the United States, but eventually felt the need to flee that country as well because of President Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric. The man decided to come to Canada. After traveling through the Northern U.S. via smugglers he was eventually taken by boat from Cornwall Island, across the St. Lawrence River to

the city. He landed at the wharf just across from the Monte Carlo Motel on Montreal Rd. He arrived in Cornwall on Feb. 2 and was almost immediately arrested by the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF). “The subject was arrested under Section 55(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA),” said the Canada Border Services Agency in a statement to Seaway News. “He was issued a deportation order on February 13, 2017, by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), which has been deferred under the IRPA as he is required to appear in court once a trial date
is set for the human smuggling investigation.” The unnamed individual was released on a bond with terms and conditions on March 24 and remains under a deportation order. The deportation order was suspended while the smuggling investigation is ongoing as the person in question may have to appear in court as a witness. The CBSA said that it cannot speculate on if this man’s life will be at risk if he is returned to Brazil. “The decision to remove someone from Canada is not taken lightly,” the CBSA’s statement reads. “Pre-removal risk assessment is one

Did you know that the pads at the Benson Centre have naming rights and that they have already been bought by local organizations? I didn’t and neither did Cornwall Council. It is a shame that a new site to be named in honour of Bob Turner has yet to be found, but I agree with Claude McIntosh’s original idea and I think the pads at the Benson Centre would have been perfect.
Kohen Paschek is a young boy who has suffered from brain cancer. He and his family are raising money for research into this devastating disease. Eight Zero Zero held an “Afternoon of Music in Support of Team Kohen” on Sunday, April 23. Eight Zero Zero donated the restaurant for the event, there was live music and donations accepted at the door. Be sure to stop by the Charity Yard Sale in support of Team Kohen on April 29 & 30. Donations for the yard sale can be dropped off at 104 Westmoreland. On May 6 there will be a charity car wash at the Brick Cornwall and the Cornwall Nationals Hockey team will be there to wash cars.
