Alex Tourangeau announced as co-chair of Rachel’s Kids Garden Party CORNWALL, Ontario - Alex Tourangeau has been selected to chair the 13th annual rachel’s Kids Garden Party which will be taking place on June 3 at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall. Alex, who is 13 years-old, is a cancer survivor, having recently completed his treatment for childhood Leukemia. Rachel’s House of Hope has wanted to have Alex as the chair of the Garden party for the past few years, but Alex has previously been to sick

to take the job. “We wanted someone who’s been very brave and courageous,” said Dr. Rachel Navaneelan. “We look for someone who’s been through a difficult time and persevered,” said Rachel’s Kids Executive Director Kim Lauzon. Now, with his treatment finished, Alex is excited to help host this popular event. He will be helping Dan Allaire and Bill Halman welcome the guests to the Garden Party and MC the evening. This Saturday, Apr. 30, Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm hosted their third annual Bowling for the Animals event at Nativity Bowling. The event is a fundraiser for the organization’s spay and neuter clinic, commonly known as the TNR program, which stands for trap, neuter and release. Angela Parker is the Founder and Director of Operations with the organization, and says that the issue of stray and feral cats is increasingly problematic in Cornwall.

Anglican Church hosted a full course dinner for residents typically unable to afford a sit-down meal with friends and family. The dinner was organized as an extension of the Trinity Drop-In Day Program, which offers free breakfast to community members in need. Rev. Peter Cazaly, Pastoral Associate with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa says that he was initially approached by a local mosque, as well as the Social Development Council to put together a dinner for those who regularly use the drop-in centre.

The Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) is training the manufacturers of the future. The manufacturing sector has been an important part of the make-up of Cornwall since its very beginning. Cornwall has always been a town where things get made and the EOTB is working to ensure that this continues to be true by making opportunities for future employment. EOTB started their new manufacturing skills training program in partnership with St. Lawrence College. The two organizations approached local manufacturers to see if there was an interest and a need for this type of program. Given the aging population, local manufacturers were concerned about having skilled workers here in Cornwall going into the future. “Manufacturers in town expressed their concerns about the 25 percent of their workforce that will be retiring in the next few years,” said Sylvia McDonald the program’s coordinator. With that in mind, the program is geared towards youth and anyone under the age of 29 without full-time employment can apply. St. Lawrence College, the EOTB and local manufacturers collaborated together to formulate a program that would meet the needs of employers. With funding from the provincial government under the Youth Skills Connections

program, they launched the Manufacturing Techniques Training for Youth project. St. Lawrence College used its resources to organize and host the 12 week training program. The College’s program involves 12 weeks of training, and then four weeks of work placement with a manufacturing company. The goal is that the combination of the skills training and the work placement will help to foster a seamless transition between the classroom and fulltime, permanent employment. “We have tried to build a lot of personal relationships with as many local employers as possible,” said McDonald. “We’re trying to lay the groundwork so that our students have the best opportunity for permanent work.” One student who has gone through the EOTB’s skills training program and is on the cusp of full-time work in a new career is 25-yearold Megan McRae. “I was actually already seeking employment and I wanted to learn more skills,” said McRae. McRae is graduating from the program in May, she was a part of the first round of students and the second round is set to begin May 22 with 15 spots currently available. McRae said she learned important skills for entry level general labour, like use of electricity in manufacturing and quality control. When she spoke with Seaway News she is excited to begin her placement at Cantech’s tape manufacturing plant in Cornwall.

Love Sick Char-Lan students provide comic relief Alycia Douglass

alycia.douglass@tc.tc

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Ah, young love. A time of innocence, excitement and complicated situations. Last weekend Char-Lan’s spring production, ‘Love Sick,’ came to life at Char-Lan District High School. The musical comedy was written and produced by grade nine student, Emma Charpentier, and puts a comical spin on the trials and tribulations of relationships. “It’s a love story that will make you laugh – everything about it is wild,” said Charpentier.

The play goes a step above love triangle with its series of intertwined romances. “It’s more like a love square,” laughed Charpentier. Having first sat down to write the play in the summer, rehearsals began in Sept. Much like high school, audiences are going to have to really pay attention if they want to keep up. For instance, Tommy and Billy are best friends,

and Billy has a crush on a girl named Mary. However, Tommy also likes Mary, and their friend, Stephanie has a crush on Billy. Still with me? “There are a lot of little stories within the play,” said Charpentier. “It’s one thing to write a play, but to see it come to life is the most exciting part for me.” While tonight is the play’s official opening

night, students had the chance to perform a sneak peak for their peers at lunch, as well as a full performance to students at Williamstown Public School. “We’re all so excited to show the audience what we’ve been working so hard on,” said Charpentier. “I never would have had this chance if I would have gone to any other school, and I think that’s really exciting.”

opinion

Regardless any budget constraints innovation is a smart investment future and as a city, Cornwall needs to start thinking how it can innovate a new economy now while things are relatively stable. Bergeron mentioned a few things that the City can start doing now that would help promote this future economy. The City could actively court tech companies to hire employees in Cornwall who can work remotely, or even encourage them to move their offices here. The City had success last year bringing Xplornet to Cornwall and hopefully this is a good sign of things to come. She also suggested the idea of having a CIO, Chief Innovation Officer, for the City of Cornwall. This could be a person who promotes innovation projects throughout the City and coordinates innovation projects with the private sector. Another project that the Code Heroes has been thinking of is publicly accessible wireless internet in Cornwall’s Downtown. This especially, I believe, would be a strong and beneficial commitment from the City. Having internet access in this day and age is a must. It allows us to access infinite information, co-operate with each other to generate new ideas and deliver those ideas to the

This year’s budget season has been a turbulent one. Fears about MPAC settlements and passing on a tax increase to residential property owners has created an atmosphere of belt tightening around City Council. As the ultimate custodians of tax dollars, Council should never waste a cent, but there are always things that should be invested in, even during lean times. The investments that pay the highest dividends are education and innovation. Over the past year alone, Cornwall has made big leaps forward in innovation. Code Heroes has really gotten off the ground and their coding and tech classes are growing in popularity. Just last month, the Cornwall Innovation Centre opened and promises to be a major generator of growth in Cornwall. Kelly Bergeron founder of Code Heroes has said that the City has funded some of her hackathons. This is a great start, but a dedicated commitment of investment in innovation now will bring future success. More and more factory jobs, and warehouse jobs are going to become automated in the

community. Bob Peters, Cornwall’s Division Manager for Economic Development said that there are no capital projects related to innovation planned for 2017 that he is aware of, but pointed out that in the past, the city has invested in regional projects that lead to better fiber optic coverage in the area. He explained that the downtown wireless idea has been considered and that there have been instances of extending internet coverage in Cornwall and the area. “In recent years, public Wi-Fi hot zones have been added to the Complex and the Benson Centre by the private sector, at little to no cost to the City,” he said in a statement to Seaway

have to hurriedly remove the 28 and fumble with the 150. After missing that shot, I’d decide to leave that telephoto lens on. You guessed it: a gargantuan Boeing 747 would taxi by in front of me, its wing tip towering above my head. Another great shot missed. These days, I’ve solved that problem by having just one lens for my digital SLR. It can be zoomed from 28 to 250 mm in an instant. There’s a second 35mm film photography problem, the ‘At the End of 36-exposure Roll Default’. Just as I’m changing the film, a siren shrieks. A masked gunman jumps into a car as it speeds away from the bank. A few moments later, the cop asks, “You got a picture of the guy, or the car, right?” Digital photography sure solved that problem: a 32 GB SD card can hold thousands of

There’s the natural, almost inevitable way things are. That’s called the ‘default’ situation. I’m sure you’re familiar with the ‘Electrical Plug Default’: all the AC outlets in the old house you just bought are for two-prong cords. One slot is wider than the other. Yep! You always have to twist the cord to get the wide prong lined up with the wide slot. Photography has lots of default situations. First of all, there’s the ‘Lens Default’: I used to have three screw-on lenses for my 35 mm SLR (single lens reflex) camera: a 28mm wide angle, a 55mm normal and a 150 mm telephoto. At air shows, if a Piper J-3 Cub was next to fly by, I’d

images, enough for a lifetime of shooting for most people. For me, a February trip to Spain or an air show at Oshkosh will just about fill a card. The ‘Snow Tire Removal Default’: the first sweltering day of the year comes on March 31, so that’s the day you chose to have the snow tires removed. At the same time, you chose to take the snow shovel, traction mats and windshield ice scraper out of the trunk. Yup: April 1big snow storm. April Fool! The flipside of the April 1 Snow Tire Installation Default is the December 1 ‘Snow Tire Installation Default’. Why put them on any earlier than that! We never get a blizzard before then. (However, I’m sure you know what usually falls out of the sky on Remembrance Day, and it ain’t poppies.) ‘Gardening Planting Default’: it’s always safe

to plant nursery stock any time after Queen Victoria’s birthday, right? In 2017, we’ll be setting off the fireworks on May 22. Long-term weather forecast: killing frost May 23. ‘Air Travel Default’: if your flight departs on time, you had to endure a nail-biting traffic jam. However, if you got two speeding tickets en route to the airport, your flight will be delayed two hours. Last, but definitely not least of life’s defaults, is the ‘Keep-It Default’. If you disposed of it last week, a guy will appear at your door and ask, “I hear you have a beat-up 1973 VW Westfalia eyesore sitting in the weeds out in your back forty. I’m restoring one, but I’m missing a few essential parts. I’m desperate; I’ll pay you big money just to let me tow it away for you.”

News. “A similar arrangement may see the addition of a Wi-Fi zone in part of Lamoureux Park this summer.” It is great that the private sector is willing to deliver services like free Wi-Fi in public areas, but I think that during this budget season Council should make becoming a leader in local innovation a priority. Kelly Bergeron explained that now is the time to start preparing for the future. “We need to start preparing for the future workforce, there is no question about it,” she said. “Forty percent of manufacturing and production jobs are at risk of being automated.”

Just as interesting is how a drug charge against a former prime minister’s son never became public while a belch in the Oval Office or Prime Minister’s Office hits the 6 o’clock news. TRIVIA ANSWER The Ramada Inn on Brookdale Avenue started out as the Holiday Inn. TRIVIA This future President represented his country at a ceremony at the international Robert Saunders Generating Station on June 27, 1959. The ceremony helped mark the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Queen also took part in the ceremony, a day after she officially opened the Seaway at St. Lambert’s Lock. RETRO 1962 A week after his funeral in a jammed packed St. Paul’s United Church, city council started its meeting with a minute of silence in memory of parks and recreation director Bob Turner. The first order of business was to rename the new community centre the Bob Turner Memorial Centre. Turner was described as the person who revolutionized the city’s recreation program in just four years. ... Wally Garand was named acting manager of the new centre. Rudy Payment was named acting parks and recreation director. ... Production at Howard Smith Paper Mill was shut down by a wildcat strike. ... A banquet at Nativity Hall kicked off the St. Bosco Parish fundraising drive. The parish, with 1,360 parishioners, hoped to reduce its debt. ... Stormont Mill’s 150-foot smoke stack was demolished. The Canadian Cottons factory on the south bank of Cornwall Canal had been destroyed by fire on Halloween night 1961. The empty mill had been closed for several years.

Arson was suspected. ... Marjorie Ball, wife of St. Paul’s United Church pastor Frank Ball, was nominated as the NDP’s federal candidate in Stormont. This created controversy among the conservative congregation. ... The Capital Record Shop moved to 17-A Second St. E., the Elco Electric Building, from the Capitol Theatre building. However, the silence by the left was deafening when just as many women made more serious allegations against President Bill Clinton. In fact, the allegations (and at least one monetary settlement) did nothing to harm Clinton’s popularity among feminist groups. His popularity increased with every allegation. It was the Clinton charm. As Barbara Bush once said, “You just can’t help but like Bill.” ONCE UPON A TIME When folks carried a lucky rabbit’s foot on a key chain. The “lucky” horseshoe was all that was left when a neighbour’s garage burned down.HERE AND THERE Steelworkers Union speaker at the Massena Workers Memorial Day Saturday pointed out that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was fined far more for deflating a football than any company convicted in a worker’s death. It cost Brady about $1 million. The fine for a company convicted in a worker’s death usually runs around $30,000. “Time to get real,” he said. ... Between 1918 and 1983 a total of 28 workers were killed on the job at the village’s Alcoa operations. The youngest was 20. The oldest 59. So, according to Justin Trudeau, former night club bouncer, drama teacher, and confessed pot smoker, the justice system has a double standard - one for the regular joes and one for the rich and powerful. How does he know this to be true? Well, as revealed in a recent television interview, his father, Pierre, used his connections in the “legal community” to facilitate the “disappearance” of a drug charge against Justin’s younger brother. “My dad had a couple of connections and we were confident that my little brother wasn’t going to be saddled with a criminal record for life,” he said. (That slight earth tremor you might have felt was the late father doing a double roll in his grave.) Not exactly a pronouncement that calls for a screaming Third World War kind of headline, but The Younger’s revelation does raises questions about who in the “legal community” made that charge “disappear.” What about those “couple of connections”? Sure The Elder was able to use his money to hire the best legal team available but this alone couldn’t make the charge “disappear.” Somebody with a foot firmly planted in the system had to be “encouraged” to pull the charge. It would be interesting to know how high up this went? Flashback to when Pierre was running the country and Maggie was driving the RCMP nuts while smoking up with Jack Nicholson and the Rolling Stones. There was no way the PM’s wife

If you’re there for socializing, looking good, and telling jokes, you’re socializing; you’re wasting the time of many golfers who are there to practice golf! You want to have fun while respecting others? All you have to do is follow the group in front of you. Be ready to hit your ball at all

times. This way, you won’t take longer than the good golfers, whatever your handicap. Have you ever thought that if you delay the game, especially at the end of the day, some players behind you will be overtaken by darkness? You will appreciate your golf game even more if you respect the time limit, which is

#momstheword to benefit Maison Baldwin House Handout from the Cornwall DBIA CORNWALL, Ontario - More than a dozen downtown businesses are joining forces to help a local women’s shelter in the name of motherhood. The first annual #momstheword campaign officially kicked off Monday, May 1 at a media event at Pommier Square. #momstheword will take place Thursday, May 11 in downtown Cornwall. On that day participating businesses will be offering special promotions, special services donating proceeds of sales, making blanket donations, selling tickets for gift baskets and other initiatives to draw shoppers downtown and collect funds for Maison Baldwin House. “We’re trying to organize events throughout the year downtown to draw shoppers to our small

businesses, while also helping out worthy local charities and agencies,” said Todd Lihou, Centretown Coordinator for Heart of the City. “We felt this was a natural fit, with Mother’s Day just around the corner.” The list of participating businesses downtown includes (check our event page for an updated list): • Life’s Little Pleasures Mindful Cookery • Laser Advance Spa Pommier Jewellers • Gordon Jewellers OBO Studios • Schnitzel’s European Flavours Dreamland • Kid’s Corner Echo Trends • Cottage Blue Home Squire Shop • Fantasy Realm Cailuan Gallery • Truffles A Facebook event page has been created that will provide updates, in real time, of the different

coordinator at Maison Baldwin House, said the downtown initiative speaks to the caring nature of Cornwall and its small business community. “We will be setting up a tent at Pommier Square on May 11 to meet with members of the public and hand out literature concerning Maison Baldwin House and the work we do,” she said. “We’re so appreciative of the hard work and generosity of downtown business owners who are doing this on our behalf.”

SPEC3217368

Prominent citizens jailed CORNWALL, Ontario - Several prominent citizens of Cornwall were hauled into custody by the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) and the RCMP on Wednesday, April 26. Radio personality Dan Allaire, United Counties Warden Jim Bancroft and Mayor of Cornwall Leslie O’Shaughnessy were all clapped with cuffs brought before the judge Rev. Ruth Draffin. It was all for a good cause though. Beyond 21 organized the Jail N’ Bail event as a fundraiser

Let’s

and good nature fun was had by those citizens that were brought into the jail. Beyond 21 encouraged people to secretly nominate their friends, family and co-workers to be arrested and brought into their “jail” at the Cornwall Square. The accused would then be informed of the charge against them by Judge Draffin as well as the amount they needed to raise for bail. The inmates were then taken to their cells and had an hour to call friends and raise their bail amount. Mayor O’Shaughnessy was booked for “being a busy body and for knowing everything that is going on in Cornwall,” and was given a

eC lebrate

bail amount of $200. The Mayor managed to raise his bail with one phone call, but then was given a further charge of “contempt of court” and his bail was raised. In total 24 people were brought to the Beyond 21 jail on Wednesday and in the first hour of the day they had raised over $1, 000. The Square donated the former location of Tip Top as the site of the jail and it was decorated by volunteer CCVS art students. By the end of the day Beyond 21 had raised over $11, 000. All money will stay in the area and go to fund Beyond 21’s growing activities and programs.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy works to make bail for the Beyond 21 Jail N/ Bail fundraiser (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

These two have been through a lot together and prove that having a Big Sister can be an amazing Match of thing for a youth the Month in our community. When Monica moved away for a year it was devastating, but the two carried on and met when they could. Monica came back to Cornwall this year and if you can’t tell by this picture they still have an amazing connection.
