CTC big winner at boxing showdown CORNWALL, Ontario - Is Cornwall destined to become a boxing town? With tangible excitement filling the Nav Centre at this Saturday’s inaugural Boxing for Change event - it seems the city may really be hooked. A boxing event 13 months in the making, city councillor David Murphy faced off against local radio personality, Dan Allaire in support of Champs Eastside Boxing Club and the Cornwall Children’s Treatment Centre. World Class Heavyweight, Gerry Cooney was the event’s guest speaker, weighing in on the headlining fight, and his life in boxing. “You’ve got to be in tip-top shape when that bell rings,” said Cooney. “The secret is to bring the confidence you learn in the ring into your everyday life.” The event featured a total of eight bouts of Olympic style amateur boxing, which Cooney noted ‘reminded him of the past.’ It was anyone’s fight during the three intense rounds, with Murphy throwing some healthy blows and Allaire working hard to tire him out. Allaire found his fire at the tail end of the first round against his winded opponent. By the second round, Murphy gathered himself for a relentless attack on Allaire, who had to work to dodge and block Murphy’s

attempts. By the third and final round, Allaire seemed to be on top, throwing some mean blows against a visibly drained Murphy. In the end, however, Murphy was victorious. Having trained alongside Murphy for over a year, Allaire says that ‘there’s no shame in losing to Dave.’ “I never thought I’d get in a ring,” said Allaire. “But I’m glad I did.” Throughout those 13 gruelling months, the two trained under the skilled instruction of Champs’ Jorge Luis. “It turned out a lot better than I thought,” laughed Luis. “I put a little water in my wine when it came to my expectations, but they did good.” Hometown hero, Tony Luis was also on hand as an official during the fight, and says he’s proud of the two for their first and last appearance in the ring. “They fought pretty well for big boys,” said Luis. Following his win, Murphy said his respect for the sport has grown significantly throughout his training. The City of Cornwall has announced that construction will be resuming at the Marleau and McConnell instersection. The work began last summer, but paused in the late fall of 2016 for the winter season. Since that time, Ninth Street, which is what Marleau becomes after crossing McConnell, has been reduced to one lane in both directions.

Check your liquor cabinets, folks. The Liquor Board of Ontario (LCBO) recently pulled their Bombay Sapphire brand London Dry Gin from shelves due to an unusually high alcohol content. Consumers are urged not to drink the recalled product. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), one batch was bottled before dilution. Consequently, the affected batch contained a sky-high volume of 77% rather than the stated 40% alcohol content by volume.

Ottawa Aviation Services is in expansion mode as it continues to establish a Professional Pilot Training Centre of Excellence in Cornwall at the NAV CENTRE. The company expects to invest $8 million and hire up to 55 employees over the next two years. “Increasingly, Cornwall is the focus of our efforts as we transform our operations from a flight school to an international flight training management company,” says Cedric Paillard, President and CEO of Ottawa Aviation Services. “We are well along the way on a five-year plan that will establish OAS as a leader in the aviation industry in Canada.” Demand for new pilots is expected to continue to outstrip supply for the next several years, leading many airlines to look to foreign flight training programs for solutions. OAS is currently training 34 Chinese students in Cornwall to become helicopter pilots. The NAV CENTRE serves as the ground school and residence for the students and instructors, while the Cornwall Regional Airport is the base for flight training. An additional 30 fixed wing students are expected to arrive in Cornwall before the summer, with a further 20 rotary-wing students by the beginning of the fall.

The SDC exists to build and strengthen communities. Our mission focuses on the social and economic impact on individuals, families and communities at large.

CORNWALL, Ontario - This Sunday, roughly 250 participants dug out their raincoats and laced up their sneakers for the annual Hike for Hospice. The event is part of nationwide effort which brings people together in support of their local hospice to raise both funds and awareness. While the rain held off for the hike, the brisk air was just enough to put a pep in the step of participants. Beginning at the Cornwall Hospice, hikers headed west down Second Street toward the bike path, walking for roughly half an hour before heading back. Carefor Fundraising Coordinator, Sandy Collette says that most participants have emotional ties to Hospice. “It’s mainly family members who come out and participate and help us out,” said Collette. Almost 30 walkers were participating with Amber’s Angels; a group organized in honour of Amber Hickey Brunet, who passed away in

Participants were encouraged to write down the name of the person they were walking for, decorating the grounds’ trees with names of loved ones. While the forecast of rain may have been wrong, the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall was BBQing up a storm to wrap up the event. Hoping to match the previous year’s total of $59,000, Collette says that all money raised stays in Cornwall and assists with the operational budget. “It’s an annual event that kicks off Hospice Palliative Care Week,” said Collette. “In addition to our telethon, this is one of our largest fundraisers.” To learn more about Hike for Hospice, check out their website.

Annual Bark & Compost Day being held on Saturday CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall & District Horticultural Society (CDHS), in partnership with the City of Cornwall, will be hosting the 12th annual Bark & Compost Day at the Cornwall Landfill Site on Saturday, May 13th from 9 am to 1 pm. Wood mulch and compost will be sold prebagged or by the scoop. With the environment in mind, you may also recycle your bags from last year or bring your blue boxes or similar containers for filling on-the-spot by Society volunteers.

Suspension

Tim Houle Auto Talk

The job of a car suspension is to maximize the friction between the tires and the road surface, to provide steering stability with good handling and to ensure the comfort of the passengers. If a road were perfectly flat, with no irregularities, suspensions wouldn’t be necessary. But roads are far from flat. A bump in the road causes the wheel to move up and down perpendicular to the road surface. The magnitude, of course, depends on whether the wheel is striking a giant bump or a tiny speck. Either way, the car wheel experiences a vertical acceleration as it passes over an imperfection. Without an intervening structure, all of wheel’s vertical energy is transferred to the frame, which moves in the same direction. In such a situation, the wheels can lose contact with the road completely. Then, under the downward force of gravity, the wheels can slam back into

Bags (or containers) of each product will be sold for $3 each; buy 10 and get one free! Scoops will be $25 for the first scoop and $15 for each additional scoop. Two scoops fill the average pick-up truck. One dollar from the sale of each bag/container of compost will be donated to the Children’s Christmas Fund for the purpose of purchasing cereal and/or milk. The mulch, locally produced, is excellent for moisture retention and weed control when applied generously to flowerbeds and around newly planted trees and shrubs. It also helps maintain an even ground temperature so plant roots don’t bake under the hot summer sun. All the road surface. What you need is a system that will absorb the energy of the vertically accelerated wheel, allowing the frame and body to ride undisturbed while the wheels follow bumps in the road. The suspension of a car is actually part of the chassis, which comprises all of the imp-ortant systems located beneath the car’s body. It is very important to maintain and check the suspension of your vehicle to continue good handling.

of this means your plants will thrive with less effort and watering. Compost, produced at the landfill site, is a rich organic matter important for healthy soil. City residents’ leaf and yard waste is collected at the curbside and then composted at the landfill site. Eighteen months later, the most wonderful compost is ready to use. When worked into your garden earth the compost will help produce prolific plants and at the same time improve the structure of your soil. It is also an excellent natural fertilizer for your lawn. The CDHS, also known as Friends of the Garden, uses the monies raised on this day to not only fund its monthly meetings and special events, but also to give back to the community.

Past and present projects include community gardening at a number of venues around the city, donations of tulip bulbs for the cenotaph and container gardens given to local senior residences, planting at Habitat for Humanity homes, Cornwall Hospice and monetary donations and support to Seaway Valley Community Health Centre’s Community Gardens and The Children’s Christmas Fund (Cereal Drive). The Society’s Special Fund Project Committee is currently finalizing details on a special project to beautify the city. Specific details will be released in a few weeks. Please join us on Saturday, May 13th, rain or shine, from 9 am to 1 pm for Bark and Compost Day. The City’s Landfill Site is located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road West — watch for the signs!

You say you’re in shape and you believe that a small round of golf isn’t going to scare you. Okay, let’s go! For the first hour, let’s hit some balls on the driving range, then after, we’ll go work on our putting on the practice green. It’s a beautiful 30_C, so we’re going to play our 18 holes on foot. Here’s a considerable program, even for the strongest. Especially if you’re not really in shape. On the other hand, if you are in shape and you participate in regular exercise sessions, you’ll increase your physical and mental endurance. Be in shape and...at peace: that means, empty your mind of all your worries so you can concentrate better on golf. Positive thinking is an important asset. You must also learn to breathe, walk with a regular

pace, and develop an attitude of confidence. Whatever your age, better physical fitness and a good state of mind will allow you to play and perform better.

Strong voices and Strong Female Perfomances Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

On Friday, May 19, strong voices and powerful stories will be heard at the Adirondack Room in the Ramada Inn. May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Strong Female Performances, is a spoken-word show being organized by Amanda MariniRohde in support of Sexual Assault Support Services of Cornwall and the surrounding area. The show costs $20 a ticket at the door and there will be a silent auction. Right now, there are about eight performers who will be at the show that night, but more can

be added and anyone from the public is invited to perform. “It is open to anyone who wants to share their story of being a woman,” said MariniRohde. “Anyone who wants to participate can bring something they’ve written or even something someone else has written.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performances start at 7 p.m. Amanda Marini-Rohde behind the mic. She is one of the organizers of Strong Female Performances (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

Flooding shows we must adapt Nick Seebruch

its own. After experiencing these two “once in a hundred years” floods, the City’s administration went to Council with the message that it was time to adapt and that measures could be taken both publicly and privately to prevent a similar event happening in the near future. One such step that the City of Cornwall undertook was the Blueprint Program. “The Blueprint Program is basically our urban water management strategy,” John St. Marseille, Cornwall’s General Manager for Infrastructure and Municipal Works told me. “We recognized that we are incumbent as a municipality to not only maintain infrastructure, but also to reach out to residents and raise awareness about what they can do to protect their own property from flooding.” A part of this is the Flood Risk Reduction Rebate Program, through which the City will subsidize improvements to residential properties that reduce the risk of flooding. This includes paying $500 or 80 percent of the cost of a backwater intake valve in the

Municipalities must be prepared to deal with extreme weather events brought on by a changing climate. “It’s looking at it from a point of view that we have to be realistic and that climate change is happening,” said Dr. Jeff Ridal of the St. Lawrence River Institute. “The efforts going on at the international level are not happening fast enough, so municipalities must think about adaptation.” This past week saw heavy rains that devastated municipalities to the north of us. Champlain, Clarence-Rockland, Ottawa and the Gatineau area all have experienced moderate to severe flooding. Hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes and hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of property was damaged. While areas surrounding Cornwall were flooding, we were spared, but in 2010 and again in 2013 Cornwall experienced floods of

the Ottawa Valley. The lesson to learn here is that the federal government and the global community have moved too slowly to prevent climate change. Municipalities like Ottawa, Gatineau, ClarenceRockland, Champlain and Cornwall must now move quickly to protect their residents from these extreme weather events.

interior of a home and $1, 000 or 80 percent of the cost of a valve on a home’s exterior. In all, the City will subsidize up to $3, 600 to homeowners who take steps to reduce flooding risks on their property. These “flood of the century” type events already happened to Cornwall, and now it has happened to our neighbours in Quebec and

Trump has had second thoughts on many other issues. Let us hope he does change his views on global warming. An increase in global average temperature greater than 2C above pre-industrial levels would result in accelerated melting of glaciers and Arctic ice, continued rising sea levels, more frequent and extreme weather events, difficulties for agriculture and changes in plant and animal life. President Trump must be convinced to stay in the Paris climate agreement.

Scientific evidence is absolutely clear on this critical issue Climate change is one of the greatest threats of our time. There are already five times more jobs in America’s clean energy sector than there are in the coal and gas sectors combined. Prime Minister Trudeau is providing national leadership and urging provinces and territories to take action on climate change. Same action must be taken by all other governments. In recent weeks, more and more people in the United States are participating in large scale climate change protests hoping the message will reach the ears of President Trump.

China, India, Canada, the United States and other countries around the globe must do their share on climate change. Top notch scientists and environmentalist agree 2016 was the hottest year on record. If drastic steps are not taken, we will continue to see global warming at an alarming rate. Climate change is proving even more disruptive than even scientists’ most pessimistic projections. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is showing positive signs of taking concrete action to stop global warming.

Global warming continues to be linked to disasters around the world and costs billions of dollars. Let us hope America’s new President Donald Trump will change his mind on global warming. After all, the United States of America accounts for one-seventh of the world’s carbon emissions. President Trump and his staff are currently deciding whether to keep America in the nearly 200-country Paris Agreement negotiated a couple of years ago. The pledge at the Paris summit was to keep the global rise in temperatures below 2 C. Many agree the future lies in green energy.

OPINION

The No. 1 contender Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings The conversation has drifted off topic, away from his ring successes - the slew of knockouts and the humid night of June 11, 1982 outside Caesar’s Palace (ring-side temperature two hours before the fight was 100F) when he stood on the doorstep of the world heavyweight championship - to his life as a kid in Huntington, N.Y. “Now you’re making me become emotional ... you prick,” said Gerry Cooney, flashing a smile. The affable Cooney and his Irish charm spent part of the weekend in Cornwall as guest celebrity at the charity boxing card in support of the Children’s Treatment Centre. The man who as a six-foot-six, 225-pound heavyweight packed one of the most lethal left hooks in the fight game, pulls no punches on the mental abuse he endured/suffered at the hands of his overbearing father while growing up in what he charitably describes as a dysfunctional family. Years ago he told a New York City sportswriter, “He (father) was always trying to break me, always busting my chops. I was in bed every night at 10 o’clock, because my father said so. I liked to go out. I liked girls. But no way.” Cooney can’t recall one instance when his father praised him. It was all negative. He didn’t know what it was like to be loved and appreciated, which ironically made his success in the ring difficult to absorb. The silver lining in that dark cloud was that his father, Tony, a native of Newfoundland, pushed him toward boxing. After school it was to the local gym, then home for supper followed

by an early bed call. It was up at 5:30 a.m. with a workout that included a three-mile run. The pay-off was a 55-2 amateur record and two New York State Golden Gloves titles. The boxing world was taking notice. As a young pro, Cooney was unbeatable. He piled up a 25-0 record with 22 knockouts. The 22nd KO was a 54-second televised annihilation of highly touted Ken Norton. Suddenly, Cooney became the fabled “Great White Hope”. He was the No. 1 heavyweight contender. A year later the 25-year-old Cooney was in the ring against the world champion, Larry Holmes. The smart money was on Holmes. Some felt Cooney didn’t belong in the same ring as the mighty Holmes; he would be lucky to be around for the fourth round. The champ had all he could handle. It ended in favour of Holmes when the challenger ran out of gas. The fight was called. It was 2:52 of the 13th round. It was the longest fight of Cooney’s career, amateur or pro. Going back to 1977, when he started knocking people down for dollars, he had logged just 87 rounds in 25 fights. Larry Merchant, regarded as the greatest boxing analyst of the day, said of Cooney, “He showed (the boxing world) that he belonged in the same ring as Larry Holmes.” Early in his pro career a trainer told him, “Gerry, some day all this (ring career) is going to end (so be ready for it).” Cooney said it was one of the best pieces of advice he ever got. He never forgot it. When it was over, he was ready to move on. He didn’t retire from the ring with a tin cup and a spot on a busy street corner.

“I was never a big spender,” he said. He didn’t buy his first new car (a Buick Regal) until 1980. “When I bought a Lincoln Continental in 1982 I was concerned about the gas mileage. The salesman said, ‘Son, if you can afford one of these you don’t worry about how much you’re going to spend on gas’.’’ Life has been good away from the ring. He has kept himself in good physical condition. Doesn’t drink or smoke. He’s happily married with three kids. He has a radio show in New York City. A man with a strong Catholic faith, he doesn’t hesitate to mention that he prays every day. As the saying goes, you can take the boy out of the ring but you can’t take the ring out of the boy. Cooney loves boxing as much as he ever did. He has become a self-appointed ambassador for the sport. He firmly believes boxing is making a big comeback. The shady stuff has been snuffed out. Steps have been taken to protect the health of boxers. And, it is getting back on television in a big way. “That (TV) is important,” said Cooney. TRIVIA Since 1950, two former reeves have been elected mayor of Cornwall. Who are they? Hint - One was reeve of Cornwall Township, the other was reeve of Charlottenburgh Township. TRIVIA ANSWER Vice-president Richard Nixon, who would become president in 1968, took part in a ceremony at the Robert Saunders Generating Station on June 27, 1959 to help mark the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Queen Elizabeth also took part in the ceremony. THIS WEEK IN 1958 Faced with power rate increasing 35%, city council was eyeing the

possibility of purchasing Cornwall Street Railway Light and Power Co. Ltd. from Sun Life Assurance. However, preliminary studies showed that power rates would increase 10-15% under municipal ownership but the city would have to absorbed a huge annual loss to operate the bus service also owned by the utility. The company said it lost $86,000 on the bus operation in 1957. .... Lake Elizabeth was the reported front runner for the name of the lake to be created by the huge power and seaway project. The city’s bid to name it Bergin Lake was rejected. ... Two families in the Menard apartment building on St. Felix Street were the first in the city to be supplied with natural gas. Lakeland Natural Gas Co., which began installing gas lines in the city the previous fall, said interest in hooking up to natural gas was encouraging. ... Construction of a low rental housing project on the former Hebert farm property east of Brookdale Avenue and north of Thirteenth Street started. The first phase would build 100 units. Units would rent from $57 a month for two bedrooms to $77 a month for four bedrooms. To quality, family income had to be less than $3,000 a year. ... Hodgins Lumber received the City Senior Men’s Basketball League championship trophy at the league banquet. Team members were Don Russell, Art Murphy, Gerry Firth, Dave Kalil, Jack Murray, Bob Taylor, Frank O’Brien, Gerry Hughes and Allan Boosamra. ONE MORE THING Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf - Will Rogers.

work. For some, it is the perfect way to multitask – catching up on your reading list while driving can help to pass the time and entertain you. And it’s not limited to driving, other activities can also lend themselves to listening to books such as gardening, working out and house work. On the other hand, I’ve also heard of those that have a hard time focusing on the story when they’re driving. The open road allows them to completely tune out, drifting away from the story and they end up having to rewind it. Plus, there’s always the difficulty of choosing

something that everyone in the vehicle wants to listen to. For me, the idea of multi-tasking appeals, but doesn’t always work out. A combination of route and story, (and sometimes even the weather), has to be perfectly suited and then away we go! Where do you stand on listening to books while on the road? The SD&G County Library has a wide selection of books on CD, Playaways and eAudiobooks in our collection to help you find out. It’s that time of year – well almost. It’s almost road trip season! Planning and going on an adventure on the road can be very exciting. Whether it’s an annual trip or a new one, the experience is memorable, even when it doesn’t go as planned. Studying maps to plan a route, exploring new attractions, and making those random, last minute stops the road trip offers us an opportunity to become adventurers. As well, being on the road during a beautiful

day, with the windows down can also let your mind escape from the every day. Similar to escaping into a good book, the open road can help clear your mind from the norm and let in a whole new world. So what about combining the two? How does escaping into a story while exploring the open road fit together? Like most things, the impact is very individual and would depend on other factors. Over the years, I’ve had discussions with individuals about listening to books or podcasts while driving, usually related to commuting to

The downtown’s foundation for the future CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s downtown is bridging the past, present and future with a series of moves in that continues to build upon the solid foundation of small business successes already enjoyed in the heart of the city. The Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) is in the midst of executing its grand plan to beautify the district with the purchase of new lighting, as well as renew efforts to declutter the quarter. “It’s important to maintain the beautification work we have undertaken in recent Package #1 Express Manicure & Express Pedicure $80 (+hst) *receive a FREE Eminence Gift Package #2 Express Manicure, Express Pedicure, Wash n’ Blow Dry & “Touch Up” Makeup $125 (+hst)

Downtown business owners are excited for the promise that summer brings. clothing options, our locally-owned stores and boutiques stock items that can’t be found in larger centres.” On top of all this the DBIA, through its partners at Heart of the City, Le Village and city hall, is unveiling the downtown component of the immensely-popular Cornwall Historic Walking Tour later this summer. Ten more historic plaques from the 30-plaque tour will depict everything from the hustle and bustle of Pitt and Second streets, to the Capitol Theatre and Cornwallis Hotel, to name a few. “We want local residents, and visitors to our community, to know about the role downtown landmarks like the Capitol Theatre and Cornwallis Hotel played in building the foundation of our city,” said Campbell. “It is important to pay tribute to the individuals

and businesses that helped put Cornwall on the map.” To kick off 2017 downtown Cornwall has welcomed new businesses like the Josa Tea Company, as well as Cailuan Gallery. Business owners have strutted their stuff on the red carpet, with the likes of Josh Casselman, owner of Kings and Little Ones barbershop, being named entrepreneur of the year in Cornwall. “We are a growing community, and our downtown is a diversified collection of professionals and business owners who know what it takes to succeed and provide excellent customer service,” said Campbell. “We’re moving ahead with every intention of capitalizing on the successes we have already enjoyed.”

years,” said DBIA chair Brenda Campbell. “Our plan is to work closely with the city to that end.” The work includes broad improvement to the downtown shopping and dining experience for new and returning customers. Dozens of pieces of new outdoor furniture, from benches to bicycle rack and garbage receptacles, have been purchased by the DBIA, to provide a fresh uniform look to the district. During the day shoppers can enjoy the sights and smells of planters to be filled with red and white flowers, to help mark Canada’s 150th birthday, while at night the twinkle of thousands of dollars in new lighting will add to the accents of downtown. Summer in Cornwall is a great time to enjoy one of the many outdoor patios that dot the downtown district. A sparkling cocktail, fresh-cooked local table fare and the ambiance of a city on the move adds to the shopping experience in downtown Cornwall. “We know how important it is to focus on the viability of our downtown, which is why our members offer things that you can’t find in big-box stores, or chain restaurants,” said Campbell. “If it’s Cornwall’s own Rurban Beer which can be enjoyed on a patio downtown during an evening get-together, or the original creations you can only find at ESCA Gourmet Pizza + Bar, downtown has you covered. “And if you’re looking for unique gift and

Dearest Mom, on this Mother’s Day, let me tell you how much I admire and love you. Like most children, I haven’t always been very nice to you. I have often taken you for granted without recognizing everything you have done for me. Today I am older and wiser and I can see what a thankless task being a mother can be. I ask you to forgive me for all those times when I wasn’t deserving of you. It’s due in large part to your efforts that I have become the person I am today. Now that I have reached the age of responsibility, I’m beginning to realize just how much work is involved in raising a family as you have done. For all the sacrifices you have made, the strength of character and composure you have shown, I raise my hat to you. I regret all the times I was angry with you for saying no to me. I know now that it is much more difficult to say no rather than yes. I can never be grateful enough for

all the good advice you gave me between two loads of washing, advice which I still use today. I can’t help smiling when I think of all those times when I caused you to laugh till you cried or when you recounted all your mishaps of the day. Because you will always be a huge factor in my life and because in my eyes you will always be the strongest person I know, I wish you a beautiful Mother’s Day!

Is your mom “addicted” to her smartphone or tablet? On Mother’s Day, think outside the box and give her a high-tech gift that will surprise her. Here are some accessories that are easy to find and always appreciated.

• A protective case. She’ll be able to take her device everywhere she goes and it will always be protected from bangs and scratches. You can find any number of elegant and feminine protective cases in genuine leather, polyurethane or silicone. Some cases can even be personalized. • An activity tracker bracelet. If your mom is physically active, she’ll love to receive a bracelet that calculates the number of steps she takes, the distance she walks or jogs, her heart rate and calories burned. Some of these wristbands can be synchronized with a smartphone or tablet.

Spring Cleaning: Making cleaning easier Sharon Fortier

owner/operator Shar’s Private Cleaning Services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Where to begin? To see real progress fast, start with the areas that tend to go the fastest - the livingroom and dining rooms and the halls - they’re usually less cluttered and less dirty. Bedrooms would be next as they are usually more dusty then dirty. Entrance ways, kitchens and bathrooms are the more time consumming areas as they collect more dirt, moisture and cooking particles. Windows, patio doors including tracks and screens can be completed as a seperate job as this can be a time consuming task. No matter what area you start with, avoid redepositing dirt on the surface. Always use a clean solution. Mix up a new bucket of cleaner and water as soon as the first bucket becomes moderately dirty.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Participants walked on, despite the moody weather at the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District’s annual Walk for Alzheimer’s. The event was held at the Benson Centre this year to ensure that spring showers couldn’t dampen the walk. Campaign and Volunteer Coordinator, Roman MacDonald also said that this year, the organization wanted to make the event as accessible as possible. “We wanted a venue that could accommodate as many people as possible but still allow for them to stay out of the weather, and give access to people who aren’t as mobile,” said MacDonald. Planning for the event has been underway since Dec. and MacDonald says that the event’s chief focus was community, which is the greatest asset to someone living with the illness. “Cornwall has made such huge strides in dementia care in accommodating those living with dementia, as well as their families,” said MacDonald. Executive Director, Shelley Vaillancourt says that communities are the pillars which help support those living with dementia. “It’s time to get rid of the stigma and talk openly about dementia,” said Vaillancourt. “It’s

Roman MacDonald and Shelley Vaillancourt of the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District were sheltered from the weather at the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s this Saturday. (Alycia Douglass/TC Media) not just the person who has the disease, or the primary caregiver, it’s the whole family and the whole community.” Following last year’s success, MacDonald says that the organization began looking into areas of improvement which could be incorporated into this year’s event. One of the things that really stood out to them was the Wall of Memories, which was initiated in Montreal. “We encourage people to bring photographs and write their names or the names of their loved ones,” said MacDonald. “At the end of the day, we commemorate each one of the people we walked for during the event.” While the event itself is organized in efforts to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research, MacDonald says it goes deeper. “It’s about getting the community together in one place, raising awareness and saying ‘this is something we need to do together,’” said MacDonald. 7236771

CORNWALL, Ontario - Both Immaculate Conception and St. Columban’s elementary schools have been slated for closure after a vote by the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) Board of Trustees on Tuesday, May 2. The Board accepted the recommendations of the final staff report which in addition to closing two schools, also called for consolidation with others, the introduction of French Immersion at St. Anne’s and Bishop MacDonell and turning all elementary schools into K-6 schools. Immaculate Conception will be closed in June 2018 with its students being sent to St. Peters Catholic School and Bishop MacDonell Catholic School. St. Columbans will be consolidated with Sacred Heart in June 2019. The combined school will be housed in a bew building either built on the current Sacred Heart site or somewhere else. The exact nature of this consolidation will be determined by Ministry of Education funding. All grade 7 and 8 CDSBEO students in Cornwall will be attending St. Joes as of September 2019. The CDSBEO raised the possibility of installing additional class space at that school to accomodate the influx of students.

preventing violence and supporting survivors. According to the Ontario Ministry of the Status of Women, one in three women in Canada will experience some form of sexual assault in her lifetime. Germaine Jean-Louis is a survivor and has been coming to SASS for 24 years. “Nobody gets it like these ladies – you don’t have to explain it,” said Jean-Louis. “Feeling understood is more than half the battle.” Jean-Louis says that the staff have been instrumental in her recovery process. “You don’t just get over something like abuse,” said JeanLouis. From the staff to the environment, SASS emanates warmth and compassion. “It’s a comfortable place to land after a bad experience,” said Vinet. CORNWALL, Ontario - May is Sexual Assault Prevention Month, and the Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) for Women of SDG&A are encouraging residents to help them in raising awareness and empowering survivors. “We want people to know who we are as an organization, and what it looks like if you ever have been sexually assaulted and need counselling,” said Executive Director, Angela Vinet. “I think that’s huge because a lot of people have this stigma of it being a scary thing going into counselling, but we try our best to provide a home-like environment.” The province-wide awareness campaign hopes to shed light on the impact of sexual assault, with a focus on

The Deaf Wife Problem

Fred feared his wife Rhonda wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. “Here’s what you do,” said the Doctor. “Stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.” That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, “I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.” Then in a normal tone he asks, “Honey, what’s for dinner?” No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, “Rhonda, what’s for dinner?” Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, “Honey, what’s for dinner?” Again he gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. “Honey, what’s for dinner?” Again there is no response.. So he walks right up behind her. “Rhonda, what’s for dinner?” “For the FIFTH time Fred, CHICKEN!!”
