CORNWALL, Ontario - Having access to a regular medical doctor is something that most Canadians consider to be a basic need. However, a 2014 survey revealed that roughly 4.5 million Canadians reported they did not have a regular medical doctor. In this survey, 21.5% claimed that doctors in their area were not taking in new patients, while another 20.2% reported that their doctor had retired or left the area. While the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) has reported a slight drop in wait times since implementing Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) standards, many patients are still waiting up to 12.8 hours in the Emergency Department.

Community canvas adds colour to Maison Baldwin House ALYCIA DOUGLASS CORNWALL, Ontario - The ladies of OBO Studios were out in full swing at Pommier Square as they recruited volunteers to help them complete their floral canvas in support of Maison Baldwin House. Part of the Downtown BIA’s #momstheword initiative, OBO’s Emily Fourney MacLeod and Tracy Lynn Chisholm say that the idea to involve the city in a collaborative piece just made sense. “When we first started thinking about how we were going to raise funds, we thought about how we’re more servicebased at the studio, with a focus on teaching and coming together to create art,” said Chisholm. “The canvas came to us as the perfect idea.” Fourney MacLeod says that the first group to leave their mark this morning was a gaggle of Grade 1 students from St. Columban’s,

eager to add a splash of paint to the canvas. The canvas itself, was generously donated by the law firm of McDonald Duncan, but was brought to life by OBO Studios and community friends. Once completed, the canvas will be displayed in the communal living area of Maison Baldwin House. “It’s a reminder to the women who are there that the community cares,” said Fourney MacLeod. “We’re growing the garden.” Chisholm says she’s amazed at the support they’ve received from the community, which was visibly translated onto the studio’s canvas. “People come in and leave a nice little donation, and they get to add colour to this beautiful garden we’ve created,” said Chisholm. “For it to be housed at the Baldwin House just brings so much more life and love into the space.”

SOUTH NATION CONSERVATION REGION, Ontario - Ontario Environmental Commissioner Dianne Saxe spent part of May 9 being briefed by South Nation Conservation (SNC) specialists on several pressing issues. While Dr. Saxe’s primary objective was to learn more about SNC’s phosphorus management program, she was also informed about forest cover reduction, projects to address climate change, and controlled tile drainage. After hearing about widespread clear-cutting in the 4,384 square-km SNC jurisdiction, Dr. Saxe reinforced that her office supports a 30 per cent forest cover, the minimum seen as necessary to help prevent erosion, provide wildlife habitat and ensure healthy aquatic systems. The average forest cover across SNC territory was 28 per cent in 2014, with some municipalities much lower than that. Currently preparing a report that will contain a chapter on phosphorus trading, Saxe sought out SNC which has perfected that contaminant reduction technique over 20 years. Dr. Saxe told SNC chairman François St. Amour, General Manager Angela Coleman, retiring manager Dennis O’Grady and other senior staff, the topics discussed at SNC fit into her five-year mandate of improving the Environmental Bill of Rights and accelerating better environmental, energy and climate outcomes. SNC Stewardship Team Lead Ronda Boutz combined with O’Grady to describe how SNC was one of the first jurisdictions in North America to delve into the complex approach of allowing four-to-one offsetting in applying purchased credits to reduce the watershed’s overall

phosphorous load. The SNC program is the first of its kind in Ontario. Dr. Saxe wondered if there was follow up to make sure those who signed on carried through on their commitments. O’Grady explained there is a large trust component; phosphorus trading participants follow through because it’s good for the environment and good for business. Turning to forest cover, Communications Lead John Mesman said planting programs are only able to return 120,000 trees a year to the landscape, for a total of about three million since 2009, compared to one million trees lost annually. Mesman explained that a new committee comprising 17 regional agricultural producers has been formed to come up with recommendations on how to deal with clearcutting, with education on the value of forests being a chief priority. Dr. Saxe suggested landowners should already understand the implications of clearcutting. Boutz also underlined the Capital Region Hydrology Working Group combining conservation authorities overlapping within the City of Ottawa which is reviewing vulnerability of low lying sectors and municipal infrastructure such as culverts in handling heightened floodwaters as manifested this spring. New floodplain mapping projects being undertaken by SNC will be able to provide municipalities and emergency responders with more information than ever before. Clement draws Conservative support ALYCIA DOUGLASS

CHESTERVILLE, Ontario - MP Tony Clement addressed Chesterville residents with a positive outlook on the future of the Conservative party. Joined by interim leader of the Conservative Party, Rona Ambrose and MP Guy Lauzon, the Parry Sound-Muskoka MP told the crowd that while there are many years of experience within the caucus, over a third is brand new. “They add a different perspective, and they’re

the case is the leadership that Rona Ambrose gave us in our caucus which projected out to the party. It showed that the caucus was working hard, and would do anything for the team and for our values.” Clement says that despite widespread belief, Canadians are still attracted to what Conservatives are saying, as well as their candidates. “Is there more hard work ahead? Absolutely,” said Clement. “But I can tell you that we’re up for the challenge across this country.”

full of vigour, which is great,” said Clement. “We’re very proud of our caucus, but it wouldn’t happen to be good if we were disunited after the election.” Historically, the Liberals have faced challenges within the party, which Clement says they’ve only recently recovered from. Clement says that events such as the civil war between Martin and Chrétien have echoed with successive leaders, hobbling them for three election cycles. “That was the threat to us,” said Clement. “One of the most important factors for that not being

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - It was slim pickins by late Saturday morning as the Williamstown Green Thumb Horticultural Society wrapped up another successful plant sale. “We opened at 8, and half of our vegetation was gone in three quarters of an hour,” said Raylene Goulder, who is co-president of the group along with Susan Ramsay. The event has become famous for its rock-bottom prices and excellent quality plants. With more perennials, annuals, bulbs, and garden accessories than you could shake a stick at, Goulder says that the selection and price point are what bring most folks out to the annual event. “The prices are excellent, and we all know the quality of the plants,” said Goulder. “They’re all fresh

from the garden.” A word to the wise for those unfamiliar with the event: show up early. “I would say there were at least 50 people lined up outside when we opened,” said Goulder. “But when people leave, they know that they’re paying a fraction of the price it would normally cost them.” All money raised throughout the course of the day is allocated to filling garden boxes in Williamstown and Lancaster. Currently, the Green Thumb Horticultural Society has just finished with two lovely red and white tulip arrangements in the Lancaster Branch of the SD&G County Library, as well as in the front bed of the Nor’Westers & Loyalist Museum in Williamstown. “Any money earned goes right back to community planting,” said Ramsay. “We’re doing our best to beautify our community.”

OPINION

The free speech business NICK SEEBRUCH nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen calls in the comment section of our Facebook page to have certain individuals banned from posting comments. Now, as a journalist, I’m in the free-speech business. My whole job is predicated on the ability to freely report and comment on the news of the day and people might not always like what I say, but I’m within my rights under the law to say it. In short it would be hypocritical of me to ban someone because I disagree with their opinion. The moderator in me however, wants to cultivate a positive environment for constructive debate and sometimes that has meant deleting some comments. Comments might get deleted for a few reasons, but most often, when I delete a comment it is because that commenter is attacking someone else on a personal level rather than attacking their argument. Deleting comments and censoring debate is something I take seriously and so when it comes to banning someone from expressing themselves on our Facebook page, I weigh that very heavily.

I would only ban someone from commenting if they are only interested in being a troll. If someone is being libelous, slanderous or is purposely trying to undermine a constructive conversation, I would give them a warning that if they continue that type of behaviour then they would get banned. However, if an individual is arguing an opinion without descending to personal attacks, slander or libel then I won’t ban them or delete their comment, even if their point of view is deeply unpopular. My personal philosophy is in favour of as much free-speech as possible, and call me overly optimistic, but I believe that repugnant points of view will always be in the minority. If anything having opposing points of view expressed in the comments section can strengthen your own viewpoint by having to defend it. Sometimes, these types of debates can even adjust your outlook and open you up to a new way of thinking. There are some individuals who will consistently make the same negative comment on story after story and if they are willing to consistently play devil’s advocate and be shot down by the

majority, then that’s fine, but I won’t ban them from commenting. Having individuals who post consistently negative comments might be the price for freespeech online.

The intent of this article is to explain to our readers that Seaway News is dedicated to creating an environment conducive to healthy debates on issues affecting the community and to balance that with free speech.

…but you can’t fly a desk NICK WOLOCHATIUK ~ DANCES WITH WORDS Almost three dozen students from China are attending ground school while in residence at Cornwall’s NavCentre. More will be arriving later this year to study helicopter flight theory to meet the growing worldwide demand for commercial pilots. Ottawa Aviation Services is providing their classroom instruction. However, no matter how much you’ve been taught in a classroom, you can’t fly a desk. This is where National Helicopters’ flight operations at Cornwall Regional Airport (CYCC) comes into the picture. National, head office on Kleinburg, Ontario (north of Toronto) is providing the training helicopters that will eventually give those students the lift to become rotary-wing pilots. On hand already is Véronique L’Heureux, National’s pilot instructor, and four of the helicopters to be used for instruction. The air has already started to buzz with the sound of rotor blades. The day I met L’Heureux, she was giving a briefing to a local pilot who already had his fixed-wing licence and was interested in adding a helicopter

Besides flight training, we also play a major role in sightseeing flights (Niagara Tours), aerial photography, executive charters, surveys and exploration, film and television productions, medevac services and law enforcement support.” When invited to add anything to our interview, she eagerly continued: “We are also looking to promote flight training for the local population. rating to his resumé. Véronique is proof that anyone of any background can work their way into aviation. There was no history of aviation in her family. She described her non-aviation background this way: “I’m a country girl from the Eastern Townships, spent 17 years on my parents’ farm, in complete charge of the nutrition, breeding and health of a herd of one hundred Holsteins. I can’t explain why, but I was always obsessed with helicopters. In 2008 I enrolled in helicopter flight training, but there was a slump in demand, so I became an airport dispatcher at a small airport. Six years later I landed a job teaching helicopter ground school. That’s when my dream became a reality: National opened the door for me to fly commercially. I now have 1,500 hours’ flight time in helicopters.” Obviously, what’s needed to become a professional helicopter pilot includes determination, attention to detail, task management – and lots of experience in taking care of a herd of cows. When asked about the aircraft National uses for instruction, she explained:“We use a Robinson RH22, a two-place helicopter. At the present time we have four of them in the hangar, and we can carry out the basic 50-hour and 100-hour interval

OPINION

Our own St. Patrick’s Cathedral three months later. ... The anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project is coming up. Today, the project which destroyed thousands of acres of prime land, ripped up villages, wiped out the mighty Longue Sault rapids and displaced thousands of folks would never get off the ground. Seems odd to be celebrating that kind of destruction. HERE AND THERE Archbishop Terrance Prendergast recently returned from Rome where the Ontario bishops met with Pope Francis. No doubt the fate of Alexandria-Cornwall Diocese was discussed with Vatican officials. A decision is expected to be announced within the next two months. ... Poll carried out last week shows just one in 10 Ontario residents trust Premier Kathleen Wynne. With an election late next year the governing Liberals have just one card to play and that is the provincial credit card (aka buying votes). What’s bizarre is an uneasy feeling that Wynne and Co. will manage to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. One thing however; she is no Dalton. ... Remember when NHL playoffs wrapped up in midApril and players had offseason jobs selling cars or beer? ... This could be the election when the New Democratic Party moves up to second place past the Liberals in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. Hard to see veteran Conservative MPP Jim McDonell losing his firm grip on the riding. ... It is no coincidence that the Liberals lost so much ground to the Conservatives in S-D-SG after Jim Brownell retired. As one die-hard Conservative said,“Pretty hard not to vote for Jim.”... An OPP officer who started his career in Morrisburg 22 years ago has been promoted to staff sergeant and named commander of the Prince Edward County detachment. John Hatch, a graduate of Royal Military College, is a fourth generation police officer and third

generation to serve with the OPP. TRIVIA These three members of the 1980 Memorial Cup champion Royals spent this season as assistant coaches in the National Hockey League. Two are former NHL head coaches. TRIVIA ANSWER The two former reeves of neighbouring township councils who became mayor of Cornwall were Dr. Elzear Emard and current mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy who is also a former United Counties warden (1997). Emard was reeve of Cornwall Township (1952-55) while O’Shaughnessy was reeve of Charlottenburgh Township (1995-97). THIS WEEK IN 1960 A wedding gift from Canada to Princess Margaret was a framed photo of 150-yearold scenes from Cornwall and the United Counties. The scenes included the Cornwall Snowshoe Club, Trinity Anglican Church, Judge Pringle’s home, the convent at Williamstown, St. John’s Presbyterian Church and Canada Cottons Manufacturing Co. plant. ... A crowd of 5,000 from Cornwall parishes filled the Athletic Grounds for a faith rally sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 755. ... The Ontario Tourism Bureau on Second Street West opened for the season. Statistics from the previous year showed that 48,000 visitors registered at the bureau. They came from 32 foreign countries. There was at least one visitor from every state in the U.S. except Nevada. ... Baxter’s Cheese outlet in Long Sault just west of the Parkway entrance held an open house. ... Cardinal Shell service station at 1230 Brookdale Avenue offered 24-hour service, seven days a week. ... Several schools in the district had classified ads in the Standard-Freeholder looking for teachers. They included Rothwell Public School in Ingleside (2), Maxville District High School (three), St. Clair Roman Catholic Separate School No. 17 (2) and RCSS Nos. 11 and 12 in

Charlottenburgh. ... Canadian money was worth $1.05 at the Highland Hotel in Massena. .. A traffic consultant urged the city to increase offstreet parking spaces in the downtown area. ... City council and the police commission opposed a plan by CNR to restrict taxi service at the Cornwall station to one company. ... Colonial Coach was offering bus tours of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development. Tickets were $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for children. ... Local Best-Valu stores were Chez Claudette, 232 Guy St.; Blachet’s, 401 Seventh St. E.; Lemire’s, Alexandria; Markell’s, Ingleside and Roy’s, Ingleside. ... Cadet Lt.-Col. Claude Gladu was named the most efficient cadet at the St. Lawrence High School annual cadet inspection. Best girl cadet was Nicole Cardinal. Best boy cadet was Rolland Pigeon. Cornwall and the work of the Children’s Treatment Centre made a big impression on former No. 1 heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney (lost a 13-round slugfest to champion Larry Holmes on June 11, 1982) who spent the May 6 weekend in the city. Cooney arrived Saturday morning for the evening celebrity charity fisticuffs match between Dan“Big Boy” Allaire and Dave“Slugger”Murphy but he stuck around until Sunday afternoon. City lawyer Sean Adams played host to the former top ranked boxer and reported that Cooney was impressed. Not only did he attended Sunday morning mass at St. Columban’s, but he was one of the mass readers. Cooney called St. Columban’s a mini replica of New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral. “He really enjoyed himself,” said Adams, “and he wants to come back.” MUSING MUNCHIES There was a time in recent history - up to the 1980s - when the local court system managed to keep up with cases with two county court judges, a provincial court judge and three prosecutors who covered the city and the United Counties. Today with three times those resources, and a falling crime rate, the backlog is staggering. ... The only person to cheat the Cornwall Jail hangman was Henri Seguin. He was to be hanged on Jan. 19, 1954 but was found dead in his cell minutes before he was to be taken to the courtyard gallows. Five months earlier he had been convicted of murdering a Maxville man. An inquiry determined that Seguin had hidden a cyanide capsule in his rectum. Seguin would not have been the last man hanged at the Cornwall Jail. The next month Peter Balcombe was found guilty of murder and hanged

Used Vehicles: How to Make your Paint Shine Again Was buying a used car the only option that fit your budget? That’s not the end of the world! Considering that most vehicles depreciate as soon as they’re driven off the dealership lot, it’s often smarter to wait a few years and then buy the same vehicle used. You might also want to get a paint decontamination kit to remove the dirt. Once you’re finished washing your car, apply a sealant over the paint. This will protect it against the elements and bring the colour back to life. As an added bonus, most products available today are designed to reduce the appearance of streaks, so you can skip the expensive polish!

Five Must-do Steps when Shopping for a Used Car Buying a new car is virtually risk-free, but the same can’t be said for used vehicles. We all know a friend or relative who had terrible luck with a used car. Maybe it had a lot of issues—or worse, it was a total lemon. Maybe they were tricked by false mileage that inflated the sale price. Here are some tips that can help you.

Sylvain Raymond guideautoweb.com

- Do some research into the type of vehicle you’re looking for. There are plenty of used-car websites that will tell you about common problems and recalls. Armed with this information, you’ll be in a better position to make a smart purchase because you’ll know exactly what to check first. And never skip the mechanical inspection.

- Set a firm budget. This will help you keep your cool if you fall in love with a vehicle that’s selling for a lot more than you expected. Which takes us to the following point... - Never make an impulse purchase. You could close the deal too soon and, more importantly, forget some very important steps. Take the time to think it over—the 24-hour rule is tried and true. Resist pressure from the seller, even if they tell you that another customer is interested in the same vehicle.

- Go for a certified car. Numerous dealerships offer vehicles with a history report and documented mileage. It’s not a 100% guarantee, but it does make for a safer bet. - If you’re tempted by a luxury car at a relatively low price, keep in mind that these vehicles generally have higher insurance rates and maintenance costs, not to mention more expensive replacement parts. This is even truer for exotic vehicles.

How to Breathe New Life into the Cabin of a Used Vehicle Congratulations, you just bought a used vehicle! Oftentimes, a second-hand car isn’t everything you’d hoped for. If the colour and overall look aren’t your cup of tea, that’s one thing. But the cabin is really important, since that’s where you’ll be spending much of your time. Here are a few tips on how to spiff up your vehicle’s interior. Many of us don’t notice, but the top of the dashboard— often the resting place for maps and other stuff—can be become discoloured over the years due to sun exposure. Thankfully, there are numerous reasonably priced gels on the market that can not only revive the colour of plastic and other materials, but also protect them! This type of gel is also available for leather seats. Another option is a professional treatment. Though more expensive, the final result is quite impressive. Cloth seats absorb odours more easily than leather, which might explain that smell emanating from your cabin... The good news is that you can get rid of it with some simple products. And if the situation is worse than expected, you can always rent a small steam-cleaner, found at most supermarkets. In addition to cleaning your seats, you can also use it to make your rugs look new again! Finally, we recommend that you dust your car’s interior every week and make sure the cabin air filter is clean. Considering the number of hours you’ll spend in your car every year, it makes sense to keep it nice!

Used Vehicles and Reliability: Who can you Trust? In the used-car market, some brands have a better reputation than others. Toyota and Lexus, for example, are generally a safe bet. Honda is also very reliable, as is its luxury cousin Acura. The latter did have its share of problems in some very precise aspects, but remains a smarter choice than a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz. Marc-André Gauthier guideautoweb.com

But let’s say you’ve spent years shopping around for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Or what gets you up in the morning is the thought of getting behind the wheel of a used Jeep

Wrangler. How do you know what to look for? Lucky for you, there is no shortage of tools out there to help! Your first stop should be the internet. Simply type the words “Jeep Wrangler 2009 reliability” into a search engine and you’ll get countless websites with all the information you’ll ever need. And although forums—those old-school online discussion platforms—are slowly disappearing, some popular models have entire forums dedicated to them. With discussion forums, not only can you find everything you’re looking for, but you can also chat with other car owners! But your best friend when it comes to a vehicle’s reliability is the neighbourhood body shop. Over the years, they’ve seen lots of different cars come and go. They’re

Rachel’s Kids Small Moments of Joy 2017 marks the 13th anniversary of Rachel’s Kids and it continues to evolve with the ever-changing landscapes of philanthropy by writing a new chapter into its foundation via ‘Small Moments of Joy’ – a new initiative created in its 11th anniversary year. Small Moments of Joy is a program focused on local children battling life threatening or chronic illness. The program will grant wishes for these children – with the goal of allowing them to forget their illness or upcoming / ongoing treatments or surgeries, and for a moment or two focus on a moment of joy. Our goal is to aid in the recovery process by providing a positive and happy experience for the child and his or her family, but with a focus on the young person. Harboured in this program is the belief that positivity aids in the recovery and healing process. Rachel’s Kids first small moment was the purchase of a pool for a local boy, Joel Fast, who is living with developmental delays, as a result of cancer treatments. This year, Rachel’s Kids continues its Small Moments of Joy program by bringing happiness and safety to another local family. Quinn, 5 years old, was diagnosed with moderate to severe autism at the age of 3, as well as a cognitive delay just recently. He does not do well in crowds and as he gets older the family was finding it difficult to bring him to public parks. Reagan, 3 years old, suffered from a stroke at birth and has since been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Having a wide open yard with a nearby forest was not ideal nor safe for these 2 children who need constant supervision. Quinn often wanders or bolts out of the yard towards the forest, while Reagan needs someone with her at all times to help with physical tasks, it makes it very difficult/almost impossible

for one parent to watch both children. The play structure will provide Reagan with opportunities to develop her large muscle skills, while the fence prevents Quinn from running into dangerous situations.

Rachel’s Kids Helping Hands In 2014, Rachel’s Kids launched the Helping Hands program - an off shoot of Small Moments of Joy. There were many very young children suffering from serious illness but because of their age group, they were really too young to need or express their interest for a small moment. Rachel’s Kids quickly discovered that the stress, travel and time to take these young kids to treatment was placing huge financial burdens on these young families. Helping Hands stepped in and assisted with gas cards, food cards, prepaid phone cards and the like to help these families cope with basic living expenses while their children were undergoing treatment. (The kids all got something too!) One of the families we assisted this year was the family of a little boy named Riley. He was

born premature on Jan 2/2014. Although he was 10 lbs 4oz, he was in fact premature. His mom had gone undiagnosed with gestational diabetes, by the time they found out, mom had to be put on insulin and Riley kept growing until there was no room left in the womb. He spent his first month of life in the NICU. About 4 months ago Riley’s parents had some worries about his development when they compared him to nephews and friends around his age. On May 9th, after some testing, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The family has been struggling to pay for therapy sessions, gas, parking and respite care for Riley. Rachel’s Kids was able to donate grocery and gas cards to help cover the expenses of travelling to Riley’s therapy sessions.

Finding the right grip Having a good grip is important when hitting the ball, because the hands are the only contact with the club. In fact, the position of the hands has a direct influence on the trajectory and direction of the ball, as well as the distance it will travel. The two hands must work together in order to provide the maximum power and precision. To hold the club properly, place the shaft diagonally in the palm of your left hand; this is the hand that primarily holds the club. Then close your hand so that the knuckles of the index and middle fingers remain visible. The thumb must support the club during the back swing, so it should be positioned a bit right of centre of the club. As for the right hand, it is primarily the fingers which hold the club. Ensuring that the middle bones of the fingers are visible behind the shaft

will help with the follow through at the moment of impact. The left thumb should be covered by all of the right hand. There are three accepted grips - the overlap (or Vardon, after Harry Vardon, the great British player who popularized it), the interlock and the 10-finger (or baseball). With the 10-finger, all ten fingers lie flat on the club’s handle. With the interlock, the little finger of the right hand twines with the index finger of the left. With the overlap grip, the right hand ring finger butts firmly against the left index finger. The overlap is by far the most popular grip today. Taking courses with a qualified instructor will teach you how to hold your club comfortably and properly. These courses will also help you correct any errors in your grip, which will undoubtedly increase your performance.

The construction sign at the Marleau and Ninth Street intersection (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall has announced that construction will be resuming at the Marleau and McConnell instersection. The work began last summer, but paused in the late fall of 2016 for the winter season. Since that time, Ninth Street, which is what Marleau becomes after crossing McConnell, has been reduced to one lane in both directions. “The contractor is preparing to resume construction activities on the site and coordination is underway with sub contractors for electrical installation for street lights and traffic signals, utility relocation and construction of a retaining wall,” the City’s statement reads. “This work needs to be completed before continuing with final concrete work and paving.” The City announced that it expects the project to be done sometime in the middle of this summer and that so far it is on schedule and budget.

I thought of you today but that is nothing new, I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence I often speak your name, All I have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake from which I’ll never part, God has you in His arms I have you in my heart and always will.

Robert “Pete” Goulet February 28, 1939 – May 19, 2014

I remember the day I met you, And the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will till the end of time, We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, My whole world fell apart, Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe it’s true, That I can go on living, When I no longer have you, And the memories of the happy years, When we were together, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, Will stay with me forever. And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on.” Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday.” Lovingly remembered by your wife Cindy and family and friends.

People mean well when they bring them bread and crackers and it is difficult for them to understand that they are killing them with their kindness. Bread fills up the birds, swelling in their stomachs, but providing no nutritional value. They feel “full” so they go and rest and wait for handouts and forget to eat their natural food of grains, grasses, shoots of weeds, worms, snails and bugs. Birds fly to different areas for different foods, so they have a wide variety of foods, but plants and vegetation comprise most of their diet.

EXERCISE REGIMEN FOR PEOPLE OVER 70

This is for those who may find it difficult to maintain a regular exercise regime here is an easy way to gradually work up to a level of significantly improved conditioning. You just got to stay with the program! For those of us over 70 - this is a great exercise regimen - for you young’uns out there (under 70), just keep it in mind until you reach that magic 70 number! Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room on each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides. Hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags, and then eventually, try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m currently at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.
