Big year for Beer Fest Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Summer Beer Fest is in its third year and this is the year that they plan on going big. For the first time, Summer Beer Fest will be held in Lamoureux Park. This larger venue will accommodate representatives from 15 breweries, eight market vendors and eight food vendors. Gates will open at 11 a.m. on June 24 and the party will continue until 11 p.m. that evening. There will be musical performances throughout the evening, with the show being headlined by Canadian hip-hop artist Classified, who recently won Song of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards. “Summer Beer Fest is excited to bring big things to Cornwall,” said organizer Sebastien Manigat. “Our event headliner, Classified, is one of the biggest shows Cornwall has ever seen.” Going big, innovation, and connectivity are

all important themes of this year’s Beer Fest, which is why Summer Beer Fest is proud to have Ontarioeast as a major sponsor. “We’re happy to have Ontarioeast on board as our title sponsor,” said Manigat. “Ontarioeast is an exceptional local company and community supporter. With this relationship, we’re able to have the cool and connected event our community has asked for. Our goal is always to enhance the guest experience, and having Wi-Fi available in the park during Summer Beer Fest helps us achieve that.” Manigat is also proud to have a strong, diverse team around him who are helping him make this year’s Beer Fest a huge success. “We brought together a strong bunch of young, local people,” he said. “They came to Summer Beer Fest with great ideas and lots of passion for putting on this fun and innovative event for the people of Cornwall.” General Admission is $30 and deluxe is $90. Attendance is projected to be 2, 500+.

The Cornwall Summer Beer Fest crew is working hard to bring the best party of the summer to Cornwall.

Getting a good look at the world Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Ayden Brunet, 11, suffers from a rare congential eye defect which severely limits his field of vision and ability to focus. Nystagmus prevents Ayden from seeing more than 20 feet in front of him. He needs to sit in the middle of the front row in class at school to see the board and needs to be only a few feet away from the TV. Ayden said he realized how bad his vision was while playing the popular game Minecraft, where everything in the world is shaped like blocks. “I realized that without my glasses, to me things look like they do in Minecraft, all pixelated,” he said. Ayden’s mother Amanda, said that her father had Nystagmus, but at the time, they did not

know he could pass it on to Ayden through her. Ayden’t family hopes to raise more than $13, 000 to be able to buy special glasses for Ayden. The glasses, made by eSight, are battery powered digital devices that will auto-focus Ayden’s vision for him. It will also allow him to play computer games or use tablet devisces without looking at a screen as the lenses of his glasses can act as a display. Ayden also will no longer need to sit at the front of the class as his eSight glasses would have a 24x zoom. To raise the money for the glasses, the Brunet’s are hoping to hold three fundraisers. The first is a car wash and BBQ on June 3 at HG Wells in Ingelside. On June 10 they will be holding a scrapbooking convention at the Optimist Club in Cornwall and on June 21, they will be having a paint night at the Grand Hotel

in Martintown. Donations raised from these events will go to help cover the cost of Ayden’s new glasses. Ayden’s father Eric has said that they have already seen support from the community and from other parts of Canada. “We have had cheques dropped off at our front door anonymously,” he said. “Also we’ve had emails of support from places like Alberta from people who have also dealt with this.” While the new glasses wil greatly assist with Ayden’s vision, there currently is no surgical cure for his eye condition. It is estimated that 1 in 3, 000 have Nystagmus, but Ayden’s case has created a buzz in the local medical community and some local doctors are currently discussing future treatment options for Ayden and others. “There’s not a lot now, but who’s to say there won’t be in three to four years,” Ayden said.

Ayden Brunet, 11, is hoping to get glasses that will substantially help his vision (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

Almost, Maine continues into final weekend Alycia Douglass CORNWALL, Ontario - Ah, love. Is there anything more wonderfully blissful? For the past two weeks, the Seaway Valley Theatre Company (SVTC) have been challenging this notion with their newest production, Almost, Maine. The play is comprised of nine vignettes, and promises to give audiences something to chew on when it comes to the various ways we experience love. Borrowing from a range of theatrical styles, the play mirrors the ebbs and flows of real life. Director, Paul Aubin says it’s a slight departure from the more popular comedic productions SVTC has performed in the past. “It’s very different from the laugh-outloud comedies people may be accustomed to,” said Aubin. “It’s very quick, and tends to

generate a different kind of laugh.” Aubin says what he finds most interesting about the play is its crossover of comedy and drama to more accurately depict the joys and perils of love. “It’s very real, and I think audiences will leave with something to think about,” said Aubin

*Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous year-end. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield.

This cut will leave a scar Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

At a special meeting of Cornwall City Council on Monday, May 15 Cornwall City Council passed a residential property tax increase of 1.74 percent. There are those who say that no one likes paying taxes, but I do, as long as my tax dollars are being spent wisely. What is not wise are the spending cuts that were required to achieve this low tax increase. Councillor Carilyne Hébert put it best when she pointed out that this tax increase is even lower than last year’s despite the much rougher financial seas that the City is now facing. What did we as a City have to sacrifice in this cut? How much blood did it draw out of our future prosperity? In a closed meeting council decided to extract $480, 000 from wages and benefits of municipal employees; how exactly this money will be found has yet to be determined. My fear is that this decision will be detrimental to municipal ser vices,

and therefore will reduce the value of the tax dollars that we pay. With less staff, hours or other resources that will be affected by this cut, the City’s ability to deliver service that we pay for will be compromised. Additionally, how will this decision affect municipal managers? Assuming that this $480, 000 cut is only intended to affect nonunionized employees, will municipal managers have the resources necessary to negotiate with their unions come bargaining time? Going into this budget season, as an observer, I knew that there would be cuts coming to avoid a large tax increase. As I stated before, if I pay taxes, I want that money spent properly by the City, so there is a place for financial review and budget cuts, but what was the goal here? Who decided that 1.74 percent was the ideal golden number that had to be reached? Councillor Elaine MacDonald was in favour of a 2.78 percent increase, why was this not thought of as ideal? The Mayor was in favor of the 2.78 percent increase over the 1.74 because he felt it would leave the City in a more stable financial position.

“I’m going to support 2.78 and why? Because that doesn’t even address the problems we have this year,” said Mayor O’Shaughnessy. “We’ve accomplished nothing to tackle this $3 million deficit. There’s no one who dislikes raising taxes more than me. Cutting for the sake of cutting makes it harder for future years. I can just see this compounding and it is just getting worse and worse. This is just an illusion to the people

that we are saving them money, but we’re not.” $3 million dollars, that is the deficit that the City is facing this year and it will be more next year, because council did not address it. Next year inflation and interest will drive that number up. What sort of financial situation will the City of Cornwall be in from now and how deep will the scar of this year’s cut be?

They agree heavy rains and terrible flooding were certainly caused by global warming. According to Paul Beckwith, a climate systems scientist who teaches at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, there is a very clear picture emerging of changes to the chemistry of the atmosphere with more greenhouse gases. Record amount of rain this spring saturated the soils and could not absorb all the water. St. Lawrence River was higher than it normally is. Also Lake Ontario hit the highest recorded

level since 1880. Beckwith said connections to climate change were “very clear.” Scientists and environment experts say all the hardships people in Quebec, Ontario and other parts of North America experienced because of flooding may finally hammer home the urgency to tackle greenhouse gas emissions. Countries around the globe must take global warming seriously. If drastic steps are not taken, we will continue to see global warming at an alarming rate.

Countries like China, India and the United States have to work in unison to tackle carbon emissions. President Trump and his staff are currently deciding whether to keep America in the nearly 200-country Paris Agreement negotiated a couple of years ago. Scientists predict floods will become more frequent as global temperatures continue to rise. Spring weather is arriving earlier and fall weather is arriving later than ever before. This is reality.

Sultan Jessa Parts of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have been devastated by never before seen floods. It will take many years and unbelievable expenses for people to get their lives back to normal. The recent floods should serve as a warning to everyone. Many of us blame the gods and our own bad luck for the floods. But, reputable scientists and experts on the environment stress the main culprit for the floods is global warming.

Carrier was an army reserve sergeant at the same base. The pretty young woman had fallen in love with the dashing Balcombe who had quit medical school to join the army. She thought he was single. When she discovered he was married, she broke off the relationship. The last person she was seen with was Balcombe who had started a three-week leave the same day. Balcombe’s preliminary hearing started on Dec. 17 before Magistrate Fred Cass in a tiny make-shift Morrisburg court room. There were 14 reporters and four photographers covering the hearing. One was from Great Britain where Balcombe’s parents lived. At the end of the two-day hearing, defence attorney J.M.P. Kelly of Ottawa told Magistrate Cass he should dismiss the charge because there wasn’t a shred of hard evidence that connected his client to the murder. There were no eye witnesses and no fingerprints. DNA testing didn’t exist at the time. Cass agreed that the evidence was “very circumstantial” but that he was moving the high profile case to trial. Cass, who would become a politician, took the unusual step of thanking members of the media for their “fair coverage and fine co-operation.” When Cass delivered his decision, Balcombe clicked his heels, snapped to attention and said, “Thank you, sir.” Two bizarre instances, once at the preliminary hearing and again during his trial, occurred when a smiling Balcombe was allowed to pose for photographers. On Feb. 27, 1954 the murder trial jury delivered its verdict: Guilty. The judge set the execution date for May 25.

Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings Stacked against today’s lumbering court system in which it can take years to get to trial, the arrest, trial, conviction and execution of Peter Balcombe, the last person hanged in Cornwall, travelled the speed of light. Four months after Balcombe was arrested on Oct. 18, 1953 while having super with his wife and two young children at his in-law’s farm house just outside London, Ont., the 24-year-old Canadian Army lieutenant was found guilty of murdering 21-year-old Marie Anne Carrier of Bienville, Que. He was hanged in the jail court yard on May 25, three months after the jury found him guilty. And that included an appeal. On Oct. 15, 1953, Carrier’s nude body was discovered face down in a ditch on a county road just north of Iroquois by 14-year-old Dale Hutt who was riding his bicycle home. An autopsy showed she had been stabbed five times, once through an eye. There were signs that an attempt had been made to strangle her and that she had been thrown from a moving vehicle. In a strange twist, several local folks, thinking they might know the victim, were allowed to view the remains stored at Keck’s Funeral Home in Morrisburg. The mystery of the victim’s identity was solved two days later when three of her brothers identified the body as that of their missing sister. Ontario Provincial Police quickly made the connection between Carrier and Balcombe. He had been transferred to Val Cartier from Wainwright, Alta. a few months earlier. His wife and two children were living with her parents until he could find accommodations for the family in Quebec City.

Mayor’s Picnic brought to life for Canada 150 Alycia Douglass CORNWALL, Ontario - The Canada 150 Committee breathed a collective sigh of relief as the rain held off for most of the celebrations at the Mayor’s Picnic, held at Lamoureux Park this Victoria Day Monday. Drawing from the tradition of Mayor Horovitz’s annual Children’s Picnic of the 1940s and 1950s - the year, venue, and mayor may have changed, but much has stayed the same. “We wanted to do a community picnic, and the Mayor’s Picnic has such a great history in Cornwall, and we wanted to continue the tradition,” said Lorne Taillon, who spearheaded planning for the event. “Our parents and our grandparents talk about the traditions, and it’s always something that’s on the committee’s mind.” With all the signature freebies of Mayor Horovitz’s Picnic, no hand was without a hotdog, no face left unpainted. With activities ranging from air

t-ball to kingdoms of bouncy castles, guests were free to catch a horse and wagon ride, or simply relax and enjoy the day’s entertainment. “It’s great to see so many people out here this morning and this afternoon on somewhat of a dreary day,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “But this is not a mayor’s picnic - it is a community picnic.” MP Guy Lauzon was on hand to speak at the event, noting how lucky residents are to call Cornwall home. “We’re so lucky to live in this wonderful community,” said Lauzon. “One of the best assets we have are the wonderful people of this city. Despite the moody skies, Taillon says he was pleased to see so many locals out enjoying the event. “We’ve had a lot of great partners, and if Mother Nature would have partnered a little better, we would have been happier, but you take what you can get,” said Taillon. “We’re hoping to have a few more events the community can be proud of for Canada 150.”

Public funds turn into private profits Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - LCBO employees were picketing outside of the LCBO on Brookdale Ave. in Cornwall on Thursday, May 18 to raise awareness about their concerns over the privatization of the liquor industry in Ontario. The Liberal government of Premier Kathleeen Wynne began allowing some grocery stores t sell wine, beer and cider two years agoon a limited basis. In February, the government expanded the program and currently 210 stores in the province can sell alochol. “The LCBO makes $2.4 billion in annual profits,” explained Jeff Scobie, Local President of the 4100 chapter of the Liquor Board Employees Division (LBED) outside of the Brookdale LCBO. “That money goes to Ontario social programs, roads and infrastructure. This privatization means that instead of that money going to the people of Ontario it is going into the pocket of Wal-Mart and other private hands.” Scobie stressed that Thursday’s action was an information picket and that they were not protesting the LCBO. Several passers-by honked in support. the LCBO unionized employees are members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). In March, the union’s contract expired and they have since been in heated negotiations with their employer. In late April LCBO employees voterd overwhelmingly in favour of a strike, but OPSEU is still negotiating and has not yet followed

LCBO employees were outside of the LCBO on Brookdale Avenue in Cornwall on Thursday, May 18 to raise awareness about the privatization of alcohol sales in the province (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media). through on that mandate. “Our position is that the LCBO is a public instituion for the control and safe distribution of a drug,” said Warren “Smokey”Thomas, president of OPSEU. The OPSEU bargaining team have been in negotiations since the end of March, and they have made stopping privatization a key part of their strategy. “You would think the LCBO would be looking to strengthen itself to oppose further privatization. Instead, the employer’s proposals are

designed to make it easier to further privatize our work,” OPSEU said in a statement on their website. The government plans to expand the list of stores that can sell beer and wine to 450. “Until recently, the Liberals had highlighted the fact that they hadn’t opened new agency stores since their election - but now, the LCBO’s actions suggest the government might be looking at expanding the program again,” the OPSEU statement reads. “On the other hand, our team knows that a better LCBO starts with stopping

privatization. That’s why we’re proposing strong new anti-privatization language at the bargaining table. “After watching what happened with Hydro One, we know this government can’t be trusted to look out for the public’s interest when it comes to our public assets,” the statement continues. “So we’re proposing language that would mean the government can’t move ahead with privatizing the LCBO without the public’s approval. We think Ontarians should get the say they didn’t have on Hydro One.”

SPEC3237614

SASS celebrates strong women Alycia Douglass CORNWALL, Ontario - This Friday, May 19, Cornwall Ramada welcomed guests to the first annual Strong Female Performances for SASS event. With Sexual Assault Awareness Month wrapping up shortly, the evening featured a wide range of performances - all in celebration of the female experience and the education of sexual assault. Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) Executive Director Angela Vinet says that she’s impressed with the support of women in the community. “It’s really nice to see them supporting us and having a voice,” said Vinet. With funds from the event going directly back to the organization to support programming, organizer, Amanda Marini-Rohde says she’s hoping to ‘make it really big’ next year. Marini-Rohde had previously been involved with the Vagina Monologues and says that she was on the hunt for something new. “The mission of the Vagina Monologues really resonates with me, and there was an empty spot in my heart for it,” said Marini-Rhode. “I had to fill that void and give people a platform to talk about their personal experiences.” Having the connection with the arts community was helpful in the planning stages of the event, allowing guests to learn more about sexual assault through song, dance, poem, and even comedy. “Sexual assault is something that most women have dealt with to some degree in their lifetime,” said Vinet.“But I think great things can happen when women get together.”

Comedienne, ‘Joa’ brought some levity to the first annual Strong Female Performances for SASS event. (Alycia Douglass TC Media)

Disinfecting Means “killing microorganisms”. The microorganisms we want to control include bacteria, viruses, and fungi (molds, mildews, yeast, and true fungi). Liquid chlorine bleach (such as Clorox) is a good disinfectant. Chlorhexidine is used extensively by vets, dairy farms and pet handlers. It’s the safest disinfectant to use around animals, and is available at vets.

Historic SDG Jail open for tours Handout from the Historic SDG Jail SD&G, Ontario - The Historic SDG Jail is pleased to announce tours will begin on May 23, 2017, and run until August 25, 2017, for the summer season. At an affordable price of $10 for adults and only $5 for children, tours will be available Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. The tours will be lead by a tour guide and give guests an interactive and historical journey through the facility, which dates back to 1833. “It’s a brand-new program for us and we are thrilled to be able to offer it,” said Shauna Baggs, Tourism Coordinator for SDG. Although tours have been available in the

past through various organizations, this will be the first year SDG will be independently offering the tours under the newly formed SDG Tourism division of the Corporate Services Department. In addition to the tours, an in-house visitor’s centre has been created inside the jail to promote tourism throughout SDG. “Tourism is a vital part of our local economy”, said Tim Simpson, County Chief Administrative Officer. “The visitor centre will promote all the great attractions and events throughout SDG as we look to build and enhance our tourism network.” Jail tours will run every 20 minutes and interested individuals and groups are encouraged to call 613-935-4891 to book. Bookings can also be confirmed via email at jail@sdgcounties.ca.

The SDG Jail will be open for tours starting on May 23 (Gina Dragone)

CORNWALL, Ontario - The desire for one student at St. Anne’s Catholic School to play softball has led to the creation of a new space at the school where students can play together safely. Recently, Julia Murphy was told that she would not be able to play catch with a softball due to fears of injury to other students. Julia’s father, Councillor David Murphy, said that his daughter loves the teachers and staff at St. Anne’s, but he fellt that this policy diminished his daughter’s ability to gain experiences that many children have had over the years. “To say someone could get hurt with a softball is true,” he said in an email to Seaway News. “Then again, a pen can be used as a projectile…does that mean we should ban pens? This is not an attack on the teachers or support staff at St. Anne’s or any other school. My daughter, Julia, looks forward to going to school every day (that speaks to how she and the other students are treated by their teachers and support staff ). My issue is with the “system” that has limited opportunities for children to experience some of the things we did at their age in the name of safety or hurt feelings.” Fortunately in this case, Murphy and the school were able to work together on a

Lawyers should never ask a Southern grandma a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied, “Why, yes, I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.” The defense attorney almost died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, “If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you to the electric chair.”
