Treasure Hunting The Thrift Store Way
Dr. Rachel Navaneelan Finding a hidden Treasure is part of many people’s dreams. Some may search for gold off sunken ships, but for others, treasure hunting happens at thrift stores and consignment shops. Everyone always wants a good buy, especially in these times. Local consignment, second hand and thrift stores offer everything from clothes to furniture to jewellery and gift items. Although bargain hunting is key, it isn’t the only attraction. Shoppers like the variety, convenience and novelty. Many people like thrift store shopping because of the friendly atmosphere in the stores and the chance of finding an unusual item. They have lots of neat stuff in thrift stores often you find what you can’t find in the mall.
M o s t thrift store items are slightly used but some are new and all are in top condition. Unlike thrift stores, consignment stores are usually smaller and tend to carry more upscale labels. Consignment stores tend to keep items for 60 days so the inventory changes often. First-time shoppers, both at consignment and thrift stores, are often surprised at the labels and the prices. If you could find a Burberry leather handbag valued at $1200 for $500 plus an additional 20 percent discount, you would probably be hooked. If you have a daughter and can’t afford to buy her a bag like this at retail prices, then check out your local thrift store. At least there is a possibility of finding a fantastic deal. It could become your new favourite place to shop. How about going to the local Salvation Army Thrift Store and buying a dozen items -
like linen skirts, blazers, shoes, jewellery and a purse - from Ralph Lauren, Eddie Bauer or Dana Buchman for about the retail cost of a new Dana Buchman skirt. People find labels here they’d have to drive to Montreal or Ottawa to find, all at a fraction of the price. Or how about a Duncan Fife table or antique Silver Service set for a mere fraction of its value. The Salvation Army offers their customers everything they need in one location. You can get the whole outfit with shoes and accessories. This shop is like a mall in one. And it’s not only the bargain hunters who shop in thrift stores, there are the marginalized of the community, those in a financial crunch as well as those who are considered the “mucky mucks”. But then, maybe that’s why they have more money - because they spend less. Being thrifty has its good points, eh?

Having lived in several different cities and towns, I must admit that this slogan drives the point home… Cornwall is a great place to live. So too are the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, the area surrounding the city. The townships that make up the counties are unique, and visitors that pass through find out how much fun they can have here. Cornwall is one of Canada’s oldest settlements, predating Confederation by 83 years. We plan to party this year, and in doing so, we will also celebrate that St. Lawrence College has served us well for 50 years. I am one of the 20,000 alumni who have graduated from the Cornwall Campus. Amongst those graduates are people who have gone out into the world and achieved some amazing things. Some people have built up businesses, while others have succeeded in science, engineering and the arts. One particular success story is Melanie Brulée, who graces our cover. Melanie is just one of many young people who are leading the next generation to new heights. As pretty as our little corner of Canada is, we must remember that we

are connected to the world at large. These days, it is much easier to reach someone in Europe, Africa or the Far East. As we connect, we must remember to let people know about Cornwall, and of the wonderful opportunities that our community provides us. The news cycle is often dominated by world business leaders and stories of conflict and disaster. These issues deserve our attention, but they can distract us from the good news that is much closer to home. This is our 24th edition, and the 10th anniversary since we changed the name from Cornwall Business Magazine to Cornwall Living. We did so because we wanted to shine the light on the people and organizations that make our area such a great place to be. LA BELLE CHANTEUSE Melanie Brulée is making a name for herself in the ever-changing world of music. » BY BOB PETERS
Life is a blur for Melanie Brulée. Over the past few months the singersongwriter has been to Nashville, Austin and New Orleans – in addition to touring across Canada. “Sometimes it seems like I am living out of my suitcase, but life is good, and I’m loving it!” Critics and fans are also loving it. Melanie’s last album Débridée, continues to receive lots of airplay on CBC Radio, Sirius XM and Galaxie. The disc has earned her a Stingray Music Rising Star Award, as well as three Trille Or nominations for Best Song, Best New Artist and Best Female Artist. She was featured on an episode of Balade à Toronto, and is involved as a judge/coach for Planète BRBR, a cross Canadian competition

for upcoming artists. Melanie was asked to sing the French version of the Ontario 150 remake of the famous 1967 Ontario anthem, A Place to Stand. It has played countless times on TV and in school rooms across Ontario.
A new album is in the works (mostly in English with a bit of French), and word is that it will have more of a country feel. “Much of the material was written along Route 66 across the USA,” says Melanie. “My goal is to build a bridge between Canada and the USA with this new project, a natural progression from my last album which was a bridge-builder between QC and Ontario.” The first single from the album was co-written with Grammy-winning producer Peter Groenwald and will be released this fall. Medical Arts owners/pharmacists Suzie Pilon, Harry Haramis and Josée Lemay, along with their more than 50 employees, celebrate 61 years of serving community families in 2017.
medical arts: Community pharmacy with a “difference” Stepping through the doors at Medical Arts – the locally owned, two-location pharmacy launched in the 1950s – one immediately notices a difference. It’s the pharmacists. They’re up front and at eye level without having to walk through aisles of groceries, gift items, greeting cards or cosmetics. “That’s because our focus is entirely healthcare,” says pharmacist Harry Haramis, as he begins to explain differences “unseen” by the naked eye. Broadly, Medical Arts has two healthcare business units: The community pharmacy team (what you see when you walk in through the door) and the nursing home team, which you never see because it’s active in a private workspace dedicated to serving 18 personal care residences. “Personal care residence” refers to the many kinds of facilities Medical Arts serves: Longterm and complex care – such as St. Joseph’s on York – as well as retirement homes and Cornwall Hospice. Medical Arts specializes in all
these, supporting nursing teams and residents in Maxville, Cornwall and Akwesasne. But the pharmacists also make house calls for people who need help in their private homes. In total, Medical Arts serves hundreds of customers daily. No wonder the pharmacy employs more than 50 people, including six fulltime pharmacists, some of whom are also certified geriatric specialists, diabetes educators and menopause consultants. Putting down roots and finding balance Cornwall – the ideal place for work and leisure. Cornwall Honda’s Dealership Owner, Bill Woolley couldn’t agree more. Having grown up in Brampton, Bill began working as a Sales Manager at one of the country’s biggest dealerships, Classic Honda back in 1994. “I always idolized people who lived in a community like Barrie or Cornwall and who could enjoy a decent work/life balance,” says Bill. “In a bigger city, you’re running around all the time, and at the end of the year, wondering what you did with your time.” Having worked as a Sales Manager at Classic Honda for 10 years, he later spent three years at Thornhill’s Sisley Honda before receiving the phone call that would lead him to Cornwall. “Back in late 2006, my phone rang with the opportunity to be a General Manager and run Cornwall Honda,” says Bill. “So, in February of 2007, we took that opportunity, packed up our

Andy and Karen Rorabeck have a runaway hit on their hands with Rurban Brewing. Not only has feedback been extremely positive on the taste and quality of their beer, demand has required a significant increase in production. “Things are definitely going well,” says Mr. Rorabeck. “The challenge now is to continue to satisfy our customers by keeping up with demand.” Rurban has just installed six new process tanks, which brings the total up to twelve. It represents a tripling of the brewery’s original capacity, and an increase in floor space at their Cumberland Street brewhouse. One of the unique aspects of Rurban is the simple fact that the lineup of available beer changes on a weekly
basis. Whereas other craft brewers like Steamwhistle may stick to one or two beers, Andy Rorabeck likes to experiment, and in just over a year he has introduced 36 different beers to his
customers, including stouts, bitters, IPAs and wheat beers. One beer, however is emerging as a clear favourite. Cornwall Golden Lager is a traditional lager – balanced in taste and not too hoppy. “It is the beer that people keep asking for,” says Mr. Rorabeck. “After a couple of tweaks to the recipe, we branded it as Cornwall Golden Lager. It is a nod to the original Cornwall Lager brewed by the old St. Lawrence Brewery over 100 years ago.” As Cornwall celebrates Canada 150, it is comforting to note that one of the city’s favourite beverages is once again being brewed locally. DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE By Katia Audet
Located along the picturesque shores of the St. Lawrence River is Cornwall’s largest urban park, Lamoureux Park. At well over 90 acres, the Park is a place where people can enjoy the waterfront in all sorts of ways. One of the more popular activities in the park is strolling along the Waterfront Trail, which meanders its way along the shoreline. The Waterfront Trail is also popular with runners and cyclists as it stretches for many kilometres beyond the city to the east and west. Additional pathways take you to other points of interest in the Park, including a playground, outdoor gym

and the very popular splash pad. A small canteen is open in the summer months to provide light refreshments. Lamoureux Park was created in the 1970s after the Cornwall Canal was decommissioned and filled in. The
canal had been an important part of the cityscape, but civic leaders had a vision for improving access to the waterfront in the heart of the city. The Civic Complex was built in 1976 providing a focal point for recreational activities and the park would begin to take shape over the next three decades. Portions of the old canal wall can still be seen in the park near the splash pad, and adventurous visitors can discover the remaining portion of the canal by heading west along the Waterfront Trail past the International Bridge. Cornwall’s heritage is on display in the park via a number of historical plaques and monuments, most notably
the Clock Tower, which features the clock rescued from the ruins of the old post office. A focal point is the Cornwall Community Museum which is open seven days a week during the summer and offers a glimpse into what life was like in the area decades ago. From the museum, wind your way through the park, past the Clock Tower and immerse yourself in the history of the city by taking the newly installed Historic Walking Tour. Of course, any mention of Lamoureux Park is incomplete without talking about the St. Lawrence River. At the eastern edge of the park is Marina 200, which offers respite for boaters plying the waters of one of
Canada’s most historic waterways. Boats can be launched from the free boat launch at the RCAF Wing. The Wing is a great place to stop by on a sunny afternoon to enjoy a drink and watch the river. Be sure to drop by on Friday evenings for their wings and Karaoke night. Lamoureux Park hosts a number of outdoor events and festivals, many of which are centred on the all-season bandshell. Arts in the Park is a free concert series that runs the length of the summer season and features a variety of talented local artists. A list of events is available on CornwallTourism.com. Lamoureux Park is big enough to
accommodate large groups, making it a perfect place for a family picnic. Those who aren’t inclined to packing a meal can take advantage of the close proximity to downtown restaurants along Pitt Street. Be sure to check out the other great downtown merchants while you’re there. In the heart of the bustling city, Lamoureux Park is a welcoming place that allows people to reconnect with nature. It is a wonderful spot to read a book and people watch. Golfers treat each other like family – and at Summerheights Golf Links, that couldn’t be more true. You see, at Summerheights, family comes first. The course began as a nine-hole operation created by brothers Dwayne and Ken MacLennan in the early 1960s. What was once farmland was further developed into Cornwall and area’s first public golf course. Over the last 55 years the course has expanded, to include 18 holes by 1976, 27 holes in 1987 and ultimately 36 holes by 1997. In that time family has always been a constant. “I remember working in the pro shop at the young age of 13,” said owner Rory MacLennan. “And I then proceeded to earn my business credentials from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall followed by the Turf Management certification from the University of Guelph. I joined my dad and together, we began growing Summerheights in both size and popularity.” No kidding. Today Summerheights can boast of being one of the top golf courses in all of eastern Ontario. It’s facility is regularly booked for special tournaments and corporate events – but because it offers two 18-hole courses, regular members and others who purchase green fees can still enjoy a relaxing day on the links. “We strive to be able to cater to the needs
of individual customers – be it larger events, or individual players, “ said MacLennan. “We have the philosophy because our family-first mentality has been a mainstay from day one.” MacLennan assumed more leadership responsibilities at Summerheights as his father advanced in age over the years. Today MacLennan’s daughter Katie and son-in-law Nathan Andrews are likewise taking on more and more from both he and his wife Kathy. The MacLennan family tradition of golf expertise, combined with solid customer service is what keeps golfers returning years after year. They’ve even had newcomers who have moved to the Cornwall area specifically because of the fine experience they enjoy golfing at Summerheights. “The recent years of the challenging economy have tested us but we do our best to be at the top of our game,” said MacLennan. “It hasn’t been easy, and some years are easier than others but as a family we have stuck together and tried to move ahead. In the end, it is worth it when you see each other pulling together for the same outcome: trying to make Summerheights Golf Links and our family the best they can be. “There are over a dozen golf courses within 45 minutes of Cornwall but Summerheights remains one of the more popular links to enjoy a round of golf. The Gosling connection to Cornwall started 150 years ago and thousands of kilometres away.
Everybody knows Ryan Gosling - or think they do. The 36-year old actor has had leading roles in a string of films that have been seen by millions of people around the world. He has on-screen charisma with his fellow actors that connects with audiences, and his roles are often ones that invite an intimate glimpse into the character’s psyche. Yet there is one thing about Ryan Gosling that many people don’t know - he grew up in Cornwall. And in numerous interviews, he talks about how his hometown sparked his interest in acting. An important influence was his uncle Perry, who performed locally as an Elvis impersonator with Ryan and other family members helping out with the show. “I was six so I didn’t really know what I wanted but I’m sure that had to have something to do with it,” said

Ryan in an interview in 2013. “He taught me how to build a character.” Ryan first took to the stage in Lamoureux Park with his sister Mandi at a very young age. He would develop his dancing and singing skills

On one episode, he introduced his hometown in a video segment that included him walking his dog Smidgens in Lamoueux Park. “You never really know all the special jewels in your hometown until you leave,” said a young Ryan. “Then when you come back and you notice all these different things... I think you need to be away to really appreciate what goes on.” Ryan would go on to appear in TV shows such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps, Breaker High and Young Hercules, before moving to the silver screen in a number of well received films including The Believer and Murder by Numbers.

CORNWALL’S MUSICAL GOSLINGS Ryan Gosling has a connection to Cornwall that dates back over 150 years and spans two continents. His great-greatgrandfather, George Edward Gosling, was born in Cornwall, England in 1867. He served with British troops as a bugler in the Egyptian campaign and was presented with an engraved bugle by Queen Victoria. He emigrated to Canada, arriving in Cornwall Ontario in 1889. His son, George Percy Gosling, was an accomplished organist and played in churches throughout Cornwall and the region, in addition to running Goslings Travel Bureau on Second Street. His son George Bigelow Gosling was Ryan’s grandfather. Ryan’s father Thomas, his mother Donna, and his sister Mandi round out the Cornwall connection.

In the spring of 2017, six ventures (three from Cornwall, one from Akwesasne and two from
Chesterville) pitched their ideas and three of them started operating out of the centre’s co-working spaces, and tapped into high-level mentorship, capacity development events and funding. With regular LTW intake sessions scheduled over the course of the year, many more local ventures are expected to join the centre. As Cornwall and area communities continue to build the innovation
agenda and foster stronger relationships with Carleton to deliver niche post-secondary programs in Cornwall, the region can expect a brighter and stronger future. “We know we need to try new things and help people pursue their dreams right here at home,” said Rattray. “The CIC is the place to make that happen.” www.cornwallinnovation.ca

“Competition has it’s place. It keeps everyone fresh and hungry. But by collaborating, everyone goes further. As entrepreneurs, it’s beneficial to understand that you can’t do it all by yourself. Surrounding yourself with people with a complementary set of skills benefits you and your clients. I definitely see this kind of teamwork happening in Cornwall and that’s fantastic.” Ryan Seale, 29, completed his university degree in Nova Scotia then pursued adventure and opportunity in Western Canada. He returned in 2011 to be near his family and start one of his own. His company, Seale Strategies (sealestrategies. com), helps companies become more effective at what they do by using digital tools.
Cornwall Living sat down with five local entrepreneurs who are quietly changing the face of the city. Here, they share their top-line observations about what shapes innovation in the area. LOOK TO THE FUTURE.
“Why would someone want to start an innovative company in Cornwall? There are the usual reasons: quality of life, low cost of living and proximity to the big cities. Do these things breed innovation? I don’t think so. Do they encourage young people to move here and give them a chance to thrive? Absolutely. There are really cool people pushing innovative ideas in Cornwall. I love that. But I think we’re just scratching the surface and as a city, we need to keep helping people move forward. If we do, then in two or three years from now, there could be 50 new innovative companies here.” Eric Bergeron, 40, is somewhat of a serial entrepreneur. For the the last 17 years, he has founded and led his own companies. He is currently President of Cornwall-based Smart Greens (smartgreens.co), a network of hydroponic farms that grow fresh leafy greens year-round in shipping container farms.

“It’s obvious there’s been a lot of change in Cornwall. I think it’s happening mainly because many people who left for school or work came back. They’re asking the question, “How can we make this a better place?”. If we want the kind of city that attracts new talent, we need to keep innovating. Of course, there’s always going to be push back when you come up with good ideas. But if we don’t speak up and act as disruptors, then we might as well give up on the community. And that’s not an option.” Kelly Bergeron, 38, came home in 2016, after nearly two decades of living in big cities across North America. Since her return, the 38-year-old dynamo founded Code Heroes (codeheroes.ca), a digital literacy program, partnered with the Social Development Council to teach code in schools, helped establish the Innovation Task Force, and organized three Hackathons.

“At some point if you want to grow your business, you’re going to need help. It’s really important to be aware of and to reach out to organizations like Community Future Development Corp, the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre and the Cornwall Innovation Centre. They exist to support small businesses and startups, and to help them grow into larger enterprises. More companies in the city means job creation and new talent. And that’s good for everyone.” Brayden Girard, 25, is the latest returnee to the area. Aside from running Daydream (daydreamdev.com), a new digital solutions provider, he is also project coordinator for the recently launched Cornwall Innovation Centre, an ecosystem that provides resources to boost businesses.

“If you never get out of your own pond, you don’t know what’s out there. People who travel, even if it’s just to Ottawa and Montreal, are more open to the differences in the world. Without some perspective, it’s very difficult to come at a problem in a different way, which is the essence of innovation in all fields, whether in tech or education or social development. It’s important to get out there and bring back what you learned.” Joey Gault, 35, runs Webtech Design Co. (webtechdesign. co), a company that helps businesses strengthen their digital presence. He left Cornwall to pursue a three-year diploma in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and returned to the city just as social media and the web were gaining force.

Pommier Jewellers history in Cornwall dates back to 1937 when Armand Pommier moved his jewellery store from Rockland to Cornwall on Montreal Road, then in 1952 Georges Pommier moved the store to Cornwallis Hotel, and opened the house of gifts. Later, Georges moved to the King George building and entered into a partnership with his brothers John and Harold Warren to create Warren-Pommier in
1965. Georges and Jackie Pommier continued the jewellery store selling jewellery, watches and fine china. Then came their three children Rosanne, Maryse and Andre. All three worked at the store and in 1986 with the passing of their very special Mom Jackie, Georges, Maryse and Andre decided to reopen a new modern Pommier Jewellers across the street at 6 second Street East. KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY “I was born into the jewellery business says Andre Pommier. We came from a jewellery background, so we worked as kids and it morphed into a career for my whole family. I grew up sweeping the floor, vacuuming, doing windows and taking out the garbage,” he recalled. Over the years Andre’s passion for the family business and the jewellery industry only grew, inspiring him to take a three year graduate Goldsmithing Degree. Now the family tradition is celebrating 80 years. “That’s why the people keep coming back.” added Pommier. “Not only are we the fourth generation, but so are our customers.” CREATING A COMMUNITY Andre Pommier, the family and staff make sure when a customer walks into Pommier’s they feel welcome and are in good hands. CANADA 150 The year 2017 marks Canada’s 150th birthday. Here in Cornwall, it’s a journey we’ve followed since birth - and then some. » BY KEVIN LAJOIE
One of Ontario’s oldest settlements, Cornwall was founded in 1784 nearly a century before Confederation gave birth to our great nation. As Canada grew and matured, Cornwall did as well, from a sparse Loyalist settlement along the St. Lawrence River to a modern city with progressive businesses and worldclass amenities. Along the way, Cornwall and her people have helped shape the fabric of Canada in many ways. Here are some noteworthy examples of Cornwall’s contributions to Canada as she reaches the 150 mark. Raise a glass Cornwall, we have plenty of reason to celebrate.

The Canada Flag It is fitting that the iconic Canadian maple leaf flag flies proudly in Lamoureux Park. The waterfront

park’s namesake, Lucien Lamoureux, played a crucial role as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons during the 1964 debate over the new flag’s design. The original maple leaf flag stayed with Mr. Lamoureux after his time in politics and it was returned by his family to the Government of Canada in 2005. Coincidentally, it was a Cornwall native, Gaetan Secours, who raised the first ceremonial maple leaf flag on Parliament Hill in 1965. The War Effort Cornwall has a proud military history and record of responding to the call during times of conflict. This was especially apparent during the Second World War. While members of the SD&G Highlanders served overseas,
local factories and mills retooled for the war effort and produced a variety of items including uniforms, barrack bunks, field ambulance beds and fabric for parachutes. Residents showed their support in a big way. In 1941, Cornwall purchased more War Savings Stamps per capita than any other community in Canada and nearly $11 million worth of Victory Bonds were purchased. Newsy Lalonde When Canada was coming of age, hockey and lacrosse dominated the sports landscape. And there was no bigger name than Cornwall’s Newsy Lalonde. A star in both stick sports, Newsy is regarded as one of the greatest hockey and lacrosse players of the first half of the 20th century. The tenacious goal scorer was a member of the first Montreal Canadiens team to win a Stanley Cup in 1916 and he helped pave the way for professional
hockey as we now know it. He is immortalized in the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Sports Hall of Fame of Canada. The St. Lawrence Seaway The St. Lawrence Seaway changed the face of the Cornwall area - and Canada. A monumental engineering and construction feat, the creation of the Seaway marked the realization of a decades-old dream to connect the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean and open up new economic opportunities for the country. The project’s biggest champion was Cornwall’s Lionel Chevrier, who later became the first president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. The other John Macdonald John A. Macdonald is the founding father of Confederation, the first Prime Minister of Canada, immortalized on Canada’s $10 bill. But there was
another John Macdonald who played an equally significant role in the founding of our great nation. Cornwall lawyer John Sandfield Macdonald (no relation) served in all eight Assemblies of the United Province of Canada prior to Confederation. Sandfield Macdonald was initially an opponent of confederation, but he came to accept it and became an ally of Sir John A. He would go on to become the first Premier of the new province of Ontario, helping to set up the initial machinery of government from 1867 to 1871. Canada’s 150th birthday is a cause to celebrate, especially here in Cornwall. In addition to a number of events throughout the year, the Cornwall Community Museum will be profiling our heritage with a series of artifacts, photographs and stories. The Rachel’s Kids House of Hope is a hub of Cornwall and the surrounding area that has been a long time goal in the making. For many years, the House of Hope was a dream of Dr. Rachel Navaneelan and that dream was realized this past January when the centre opened with a strong showing of community support. Dr. Navaneelan’s drive to provide support for children in the community began over
ten years ago with her first Garden Party, which was held in her back yard in support of the children affected by the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. Since then, the now annual Rachel’s Kids Garden party has grown. Last year was its 12th anniversary and it raised $148, 000. “Once again this amazing community surprised me with its generosity,” said Rachel’s Kids Executive Director Kim Lauzon.
“It was overwhelming to see the amount of individuals that attended this year’s garden party.” “Cornwall has been good to me and I want to encourage others to get involved with helping kids,” Navaneelan said. The next Garden Party is on June 3, 2017 at the Ramada Inn. 80 percent of the money raised at the Garden Party stays in the community.
Dr. Navaneelan was recognized in February by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year. “Coming from afar, our winner and family arrived in the City close to 25 years ago and set up what would become a thriving business, one that provided outstanding service to literally hundreds of people,” Bill Hallman, one of the MC’s of the Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, stated in his presentation speech. “Even though our winner was pleased with the success of the business, the community and its needs beckoned. And so, our winner embarked upon a humanitarian journey that would see hundreds more receive a myriad of benefits. Not only that, there were all manner of agencies throughout the Cornwall area that were blessed by our winner’s dedication commitment and generosity.” “If I’ve set examples to others and they get involved, then every small bit helps,” said Dr. Navaneelan after accepting the award. “If everyone does a little bit it builds into a big impact.” In 2017, Dr. Navaneelan opened the

hoped the new facility would help make the lives of parents of children with disabilities a little easier and a little more joyous. “The parents who stick out in my mind are the ones whose children have disabilities,” she said. “My heart feels for them because their journey can be a long one. I heard them tell me that they wanted a place where they could go to meet other parents with children with disabilities who understood what they were going through.” Kim Lauzon is excited to say that since opening, membership at the House of Hope has steadily increased as parents and children are eager to take advantage of what the state of the art facility has to offer. “The House of Hope is a place where all children can come to learn, have fun and grow,” said Lauzon.
MUSIC MATTERS Davey Bedard and Jason Mitchell have been leaders in Cornwall’s music scene for over 10 years. Partners in Limelight Music and Arts Academy, the pair have helped hundreds of kids unlock their musical talents in addition to booking countless live acts and launching Cornwall’s MusicFest.

St. Lawrence College is celebrating 50 years of education this year. “St. Lawrence College is a great place to study and to work,” says Patrick Finucan, a retired College administrator. “Over the past halfcentury it has made a significant impact in the community and brought thousands of people into satisfying careers and successful lives.” In 1965, Ontario introduced legislation that provided for the establishment of community colleges, each responsible for a designated area of the province. St. Lawrence College was created to serve the far east of Ontario and established campuses in Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston. The Cornwall Campus opened its doors to the first class of 148 postsecondary students enrolled in Business and Polytechnical programs in Cornwall on October 2, 1967. Classes were first held in portable classrooms and in rented promises at General Vanier Secondary School on Cumberland Street.

Classes were first held at Windmill Point overlooking the St. Lawrence River in September 1968 in the former Cornwall Classical College. This building, now known as Moulinette Hall, was purchased from the Clerics of St. Viateur in 1969. The Cornwall Campus was officially opened by the Honourable W. Ross MacDonald, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Ontario, on September 20, 1968. In 1971, construction was completed on Wales Hall, a new structure built to house the Retraining Department and the skilled trades programs. Health Sciences education moved
from hospital based programs into colleges in 1973. The College built on the strong tradition of outstanding Nursing Education that had been established by the Regional School of Nursing. For many years the Cornwall Campus led the province in success on registration exams. The College of Nurses changed the requirement for registration of Nurses to a baccalaureate. After a hiatus the College established a partnership with Laurentian University and now offers the entire four year degree program. In the mid-1970s, the Royal Canadian Navy was looking for a marine engineering program to educate sailors for the new Iroquois-class destroyers. The Cornwall Campus, with its superb thermodynamics lab and strong instrumentation program, was selected to deliver the Marine Engineering Technology Training Program. The campus would welcome 60 new military recruits from across Canada each year through the late 1990s.

In 1976, a new building was built to house the library, labs, cafeteria, community theatre and student services. Keeping with College policy to honour the Lost Villages, the building was named Aultsville Hall. Very early in its history, the College recognized the need to serve the Francophone population in the area. Bilingual staff and faculty members were hired and a number of programs including Early Childhood Education, Behavioural Science Technician, Nursing, Electronics Engineering Technician, Business - Accounting, Autobody Repairer and Fabricating and Welding were in operation by the mid1980s. In 1981, the Cornwall Campus Engineering Technology and Trades department launched its Microcomputer Engineering Technology program. The program included six semesters of study and three full-semester work placement opportunities with industries operating in Eastern Ontario’s growing high tech sector. Advanced for its time, the program acquired the first educational UNIX licence in Canada to run on the department’s
new VAX computer. In the early 1980s, the College entered into a five-year Canadian International Development Agency contract to support Morne Fortune Technical College in Saint Lucia. A number of faculty members spent an academic year teaching on the tropical island often with their families in tow. In response to a request from the City of Cornwall the Cornwall Campus developed a Paramedic program, which was so popular it was immediately oversubscribed. The University of Ottawa had been offering continuing education courses in Cornwall for some time before a formal arrangement was made to share classroom, library and office space on the Cornwall Campus. One of the highlights at the time was the acceptance of college courses (Introductory Accounting, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Data Processing) by the university for credit. When the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences was created by community leaders in 1994, the College invited it to
build on the Cornwall Campus. The Institute has emerged as a recognized leader in river science, and the Environmental Technician Program was added to the College’s portfolio. In 2011, the College reopened Moulinette Hall following a $14 million renovation project that breathed new life into the Cornwall Campus, with major physical improvements to campus labs, classrooms and amenities. “One of the highlights over the years is the success of our athletic programs,” says Don Fairweather, who retired in 2015. “Both men and women Sharks hockey teams won Ontario championships.” As the college moves into its next half-century, the future looks bright. “Enrollment remains strong in Cornwall and we continue to modify our course offerings to reflect what is needed in our community,” says Deb Stava, current Campus Dean. “We are proud that our students leave here with a solid education and excellent prospects for work in their chosen career.” www.stlawrencecollege.ca

Having solid dental habits as an adult begins with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of tooth care as a child. At Dr. Steven Deneka’s Cornwall Dental Arts practice that sentiment couldn’t be more true. Dr.Deneka and his smiling staff have made it a priority to begin planting the seeds of dental health early in a child’s life – and make the experience of visiting the dentist as comfortable as possible. As children get older and transition into adulthood they continue to return to Dr. Deneka’s office for checkups and other procedures. “We’re proud to have patients of all ages, infants to seniors, who enjoy dealing with our courteous staff and are made to feel comfortable because of the family atmosphere in the practice,” said Dr. Deneka. The children’s program at Dr. Deneka’s office focuses on children beginning at age one and lasting well into their teens. The priority is to establish a good relationship with parent and child to make them feel relaxed and comfortable in a child-friendly setting. Each child is unique and is treated accordingly. Dr. Deneka and his team set aside 50 minutes to an hour for each child’s check up
and cleaning. This allows them to know how important they are as an individual. “Interaction is relatable and fun,” said Dr. Deneka. “Trust is essential. Ultimately, the goal is to abolish dental anxiety and to have all children look forward to each and every dental visit for a lifetime. “It’s the same thing with baseball. The players start in the minors developing fundamentals and work their way up. Well it’s the same thing here – we start fundamentals with the kids and we want them to work their way up so they have strong dental habits as adults.” And when it comes to baseball, Dr. Deneka knows what he is talking about. The son of a minor league pitcher, Dr. Deneka was immersed in baseball beginning at a young age. His father Stan pitched in the Dodger organization and had plenty of friends with the Montreal Expos – the team Dr. Deneka cheered for as a young man growing up in Laval, Que. When his father, in 1974, helped secure Dr. Deneka a job as a ball boy for the Expos, it was as if his sporting dreams came true. “My dad had a lot of friends in baseball – so I got to be ball boy,” he said. “We had to be there about 4 hours before the game. We would just make sure equipment was set up. I would
make sure to get the game balls to the umpires before the game. They would have to rub them down with a special mud to make sure they weren’t shiny. After that we would hang out in the outfield and catch balls during practice,” he continued. “Then throughout the game I would retrieve the ones that did not leave the field, often catching balls off the net behind home plate while the organist played his signature tune,” he said. “It was a great experience for a teenager. with RICK CRONEY
We took some time to catch up with Rick Croney from the Cornwall Multisport Club to chat about running. Rick has coached young track athletes as well as learn to run groups and those looking to improve their personal best race times. Why Run? There are a lot of good reasons to run: to get fit, lose weight, reduce stresss. It is an inexpensive sport, and one where you get to meet new people. Running, however, is not necessarily fun. It can be tough and at the end of a run, you end up back where you started. But for many of the growing number of runners (it’s one of the most popular pastimes in Canada), the reason to run is the sense of accomplishment that comes once you’re done. Whether you have run a 5k or just jogged around the block, reaching the end means doing what you set out to do. And that is a feeling that never gets old. Can anyone be a runner? Absolutely! There are terrific entry level running programs to get you from the couch to a 5k distance in a 10 week period. It is all about alternating walking and running over one minute intervals. Does running require any special gear? A comfortable pair of running shoes that suit you and your feet, along with a positive attitude are all you need to get you started. It also helps to have a running partner, to keep you motivated knowing that you will have someone out there with you. A basic watch will help keep track of your run intervals. Which is better - running on a treadmill, or running outside? Running on a treadmill is a bit easier than running outside. The moving belt helps you along, and there is no wind resistance. It rarely rains or snows inside, so even the most dedicated road racers find some value in treadmills. However,

running in one spot can be boring, even if the treadmill comes with a TV. While there is no subsitute for running outdoors, adjust your treadmill to a 1% incline - that will equal the calorie burn of an outdoor run. Are races only for experienced runners? Races may seem intimidating, but they are for everyone including walkers, newbies and inexperienced runners - of all ages. Races provide an environment of comradery and excitement - and the challenge is there to race against yourself for a personal best each time. Not to mention receiving a finishers medal always makes you feel proud of your accomplishments while providing you with a great piece of memorabilia. Should you warm up before a run? No matter how young, old, or fit you are, muscles will always work better if they are warmed up. Stretching before running will reduce the chance of injury. Just as important is stretching after the race this will aid in recovery time. Simply
put, you won’t be as sore and will feel much better. What does a running club offer someone who is just starting to run? Lots! You can begin by starting with a learn to run program and meet people who are just like you, a beginner. Club veterans run with the beginners at every level, it provides great encouragement and it also helps that they keep track of the time intervals, and you get to focus just on breathing. A race event is always held at the end of the program, allowing you to see the results of your training and hard work. You are able to end the program with a support system and a new family of running friends. What does the Cornwall Multisport Club have to offer new runners? There are 5650 kilometres between Cornwall and Madrid, yet for Gonzalo Paul, the two cities might as well as be one. The 15 year–old Spanish exchange student has lived in Cornwall with my family and me for the past 10 months. Gonzalo, or G, as his Canadian friends and family call him, is attending Cornwall Collegiate Vocation School on a high school exchange program. Life in Cornwall took some getting used to, but G has come to embrace his new community. “Everyone is so nice and helpful,” he says. “I love that I can walk everywhere; it is safe and beautiful, with so much green.”

Cornwall may be a smaller city on another continent, but there are similarities in the life of an active teenager. Gonzalo attended a private school in Madrid, followed by soccer practice each night. At CCVS, teachers
and school mates have encouraged G to take part in many extracurricular activities. Word of his soccer skills reached the football coach and next thing we knew he was recruited as the team’s new place kicker. Gonzalo’s biggest hurdle was improving his English skills, which he says was the primary motive in deciding to study abroad. Over the past 10 months, G’s love for life and openness to try new things, like football, has helped him learn our language in a fun and non-threatening environment. “Life in Madrid is busy, yet my days here are full as well,” Gonzalo says. “Everybody takes the time to know
my name, and really care that I am doing well.” Each year dozens of foreign exchange students study in Cornwall at area high schools and St. Lawrence College. Dozens more from around the world are enrolled in aviation related courses at the NAV Centre. It is an activity that promises future community growth in addition to the short-term economic benefits. Gonzalo’s experience is that Cornwall is open to newcomers and that recent arrivals to Canada can have a place here. The cost of living is a fraction of major urban centres, and the small town feel can really make the difference between success and failure. Cornwall Economic Development has created a new website (www. immigrationcornwall.ca) to help newcomers find answers to some of
their questions about living in Canada. The website provides information on housing, careers, as well as rules and tips in dealing with government bureaucracy - basically everything you need to know before, after and during the immigration process. proud of my community for welcoming him the way they have. Having experienced the transition of Gonzalo first arriving here and being new to Canada to seeing how my community has embraced him, I can undeniably say that Cornwall is ready, open and welcoming to immigrants. In June, Gonzalo will return to Madrid. He assures me that he will be back after he finishes his studies. He loves the freedom and flexibility he has in Canada. home makeover » By Brian McCourt The word ‘Home’ means so much more than the poured foundation that the 2x6 frame sits on. To me, the word ‘Home’ means family and memory and sentiment. Home is more than where the heart is. It is where we spend the majority of our lives with the people we care for most and renovating your home adds value in more ways than one. That’s a lot of pressure, isn’t it? The truth is, tackling a home renovation project can be daunting. Planning a new layout is difficult. Especially, when you’re unsure of what you’re able to move and what has to stay - what’s supporting and what’s just for show… not to mention the blind cost of it all. Then there’s the infinite amount of material choices that can leave you overwhelmingly-overwhelmed. You’ve been there, staring at the same 4 samples for an hour, not knowing if it works with the hardwood floors, counters or wall colour. “Is this green a blue-green or a yellow-green? Is that beige or grey? Can I use black hardware if my floors are brown? ” No, you’re not colour blind and yes, it’s normal that your brain hurts with all of these uncertainties. Fortunately there is help out there. Hiring a professional is always a good idea. When hiring a contractor, the age old rule of acquiring 3 quotes and checking references is still the best practice. My best advice is not to automatically hire the cheapest. You’ve heard it before but I have to say it again - you get what you pay for. Hiring a designer is a bit more subjective. You’ll want to see their portfolio and may only consider hiring them for a short consult to make sure you’re on the right track. My parents hired a designer

when I was 14 years old and those meetings are what sparked my interest in home renovation and design. That’s where I learned the difference between a ‘blue-green’ and a ‘yellow-green’. If you’re like me and you feel like you can do anything on your own, then buckle up and enjoy the ride. First, evaluate your lifestyle. What are the shortcomings of the space you’re in? Is it hard to entertain? Are you lacking storage? Is it dark and divided? Or is it just plain ugly? It seems simple but these are important questions you need to ask yourself before getting your hands dirty.
Inspiration photos can spark ideas to help solve the issues you’re having with your space. They also provide reference to help you stay on track and stick to one style. A common mistake I see is when homeowners buy things they like but never consider how they would look together. There are a number of home renovation and ‘diy’ resources out there, from books to magazines to TV shows and a ton of online videos. Of course I recommend hgtv.ca for the latest trends, most entertaining shows and the coolest homegrown hosts ;-)
Once you identify the problems with your space and you’ve chosen a style, it’s time to start planning. The more you plan, the smoother the renovation. The most common renovations nowadays involve removing walls and creating open concept living. It’s the best way to create more useable space without adding space. Open concept living is conducive to our fast paced, modern-day, multi-tasking lifestyles. It’s how we get so much done in a day! Think about it; being able to supervise the kids in the family room while you make dinner in the kitchen
or pay bills at the counter can shave minutes off your work day. And a more functional kitchen could shave 5 minutes of food prep from your day between breakfast, lunch and dinner. If your home became 5 minutes more efficient, everyday, for 1 year, that’s 1820 minutes or 30 hours of quality time that you’ve just gained with your family. So when you are renovating your kitchen, make sure the cooking utensils are close to the stove and the eating utensils are next to the dishwasher. You might as well put

the coffee filters next to the coffee machine and anything else you can think of, because it all adds up to the most important thing that money can’t buy - time. Renovations have a tendency to evolve and grow after you get started. You’ll love your new kitchen when it’s done but it will make the rest of your home look even more tired and dated. Plan a 20% contingency fund and if you’re tackling a full home renovation on your own, map it out in stages. (Phase 1: kitchen and foyer. Phase 2: washrooms and hardwood throughout. Phase 3: basement). If you are making alterations to the structure of your home, you must get a permit with proper drawings stamped by a qualified engineer and approved by the city. Also, you must pull an ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) permit when making changes to the
electrical panel. You may have trouble selling your home in the future if it has been renovated and no ESA certificate is provided. Now that we are past the serious talk, lets move on to the fun stuff choosing finishes. The kind of materials we use in our homes has an impact on how we feel. Natural products such as wood and stone can create an organic aura that lifts the spirit and helps us relax. For a long time, beige and brown were trendy paint neutrals. Then things turned to blue-greys. Now, we are seeing a lot of ‘Greige’ as I like to call it. It’s a mix of grey and beige - warm greys and light neutrals. A crowd favourite is ‘Intense White’ by Benjamin Moore (no, it’s not white). Taupes have been in style for a long time. It tends to have a slight green tint to it but is mostly a

saying it’s the embarrassing ‘mullet hairstyle of tomorrow’ but every trend has an expiry date. You do want to consider the value your renovations add to your home but if your plan is stay for 10 years or longer, my advice is to customize it for you. Tailor it to your lifestyle because it’s all about making your house into a home. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about the backyard. After all, I’m the host of an HGTV show called Backyard Builds. You can watch my show on hgtv.ca for what to do to your backyard but here are 5 things you want to watch out for when taking on the backyard. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is starting your build before grading your property. I’m not talking about the A’s and B’s that measured our high school careers, rather, the slope of our yard. Grading is the work involved to ensure your property is level or sloped away from your house. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I see a property that is sloped away from the house because I’m already one step ahead! Grading reduces
muddy grey. Recently, white walls and trim has been very popular but is not practical for the average homeowner (Cornwallian). If this is your first time choosing finishes, you might want to stick to more neutral committals. Meaning, anything that is attached to the house and would be expensive to change keep neutral. Throw that personality in by creating a feature wall or going with a bold print on the curtains or pillows. Then it’s easy to switch out when you get tired of it.
Gone are the days of using a contrasting paint colour as an accent wall. Today, it’s all about adding texture. Shiplap is a great example but even wild ideas like installing vinyl records on an entire wall (leaving them natural or painting them white). Barn board has been a really popular for the last decade. While I do love the rustic natural texture of it, I think the market is oversaturated with this look. Don’t worry, it’s still in style but moving forward, I would think twice about installing it as I think it only has about 5 years left on trend. I’m not

the risk of basement flooding or ‘ponding’ near the house and prevents foundation deterioration. If you build before grading, then you won’t have the proper access to grade your yard properly. We do things in a certain order and grading is top priority before anything else. Setting support posts directly into concrete is very common. There’s a common misconception that pressure treated wood will not rot - wrong. It does rot but at a much slower pace. The problem with putting your posts directly into concrete is that concrete shrinks as it cures. Essentially, you’re creating a void between the post and the concrete for water to fill and eventually, rot the base of your supports. To get the most life out of your build, pour your concrete footings, then secure post saddles (u-shaped hardware) to stabilize your supports that sit on top of the concrete footings. I do make the exception for fence posts because they don’t bear a ton of weight. If you want to take an extra step, then seal the bottom of
your fence posts to further protect it from moisture damage. You just built a beautiful new fence around the perimeter of your yard and you’re so proud. Winter comes and those shady neighbourhood kids ripped out your fence posts while you were sleeping! Wrong, you’ve been victimized by frost heave. Frost heave occurs when the ground freezes and pushes your supports up out of the ground. Think about when you put a few room temperature beer bottles in the freezer to get them extra cold after mowing the lawn. Crap! You forgot them in there and they’ve shattered. I hate when that happens… but there’s a lesson here; When liquid (or moisture) freezes, it expands. So much so that it can break through glass and even extract your footings from the ground! To avoid this, we dig our footings a minimum of 48,” below the frost line. And for the beer, set a 20 minute alarm on your phone as a reminder. People spend a lot of money on outdoor furniture. Then the hustle of
fall comes and they forget to cover or store their furniture before the first snow fall. While it’s not the end of the world, it significantly reduces the life of your outdoor furniture. Put a reminder in your calendar yearly, when the clocks turn back an hour, to winterize your backyard. You’d double the life of your furniture. If you have a painted or stained deck, you’re probably coating it every year or every other year. That seems excessive, doesn’t it? Make sure you properly prepare the surface before you paint or stain. That way you can stretch to that 3rd year. You may consider a natural wood product or a composite decking that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. Inside and out, renovating your home can be a very rewarding project. Completing it will not only give you a sense of pride and accomplishment, but your new and improved home will free up more time to make more sentimental memories with your family and those that you love. brianmccourtdesigns.com

DESIGNING dOWNTOWN The heart of Cornwall is made up of vibrant neighbourhoods, thanks to ongoing revitalization efforts. » BY TODD LIHOU
Cornwall’s downtown is bridging the past, present and future with a series of moves that continues to build upon the solid foundation of small business success already enjoyed in the heart of the city. The Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) is in the midst of executing its grand plan to beautify the district with the purchase of new lighting and outdoor furniture, as well as renew efforts to declutter the quarter in conjunction with municipal partners. “It’s important to maintain the beautification work we have undertaken in recent years,” said DBIA chair Brenda Campbell. “Our

plan is to work closely with the city on a program of decluttering and improvements to signage and lighting.” The work includes broad

improvement to the downtown shopping and dining experience for new and returning patrons. Dozens of pieces of new outdoor furniture, from benches to bicycle rack and trash receptacles, are being erected downtown, to provide a fresh uniform look to the district. During the day shoppers can enjoy the sights and smells of 50 new planters to be filled with red and white flowers, to help mark Canada’s 150th birthday, while at night the twinkle of new lighting will add to the accents of downtown. Summer in Cornwall is a great time to enjoy one of the many outdoor patios that dot the downtown district.

En partenariat entre la communauté et CogecoTV, Franco-hebdo ressemble à JeanMarcel Lemoëligou et Michel Lamarche : ensemble ils reflètent bien l’effervescence francophone régionale. Les spécialistes de CogecoTV assurent la réalisation et la diffusion de l’émission Franco-hebdo à la télé communautaire. Née de la rencontre d’intérêts du diffuseur et de plusieurs personnes-clés de la communauté francophone, l’émission s’appuie sur l’entraide d’une petite équipe créative assez stable : quatre recherchistes principaux entourent les deux animateurs réguliers. Ces six curieux touche-à-tout participent à toutes les étapes depuis la planification jusqu’au tournage : programmation des entrevues, textes (rédaction et révision), communication et contacts avec les invités. Diffusée depuis le 19 mai 2015, Franco-hebdo représente 126 entrevues figurant dans 54 émissions, sans compter les reprises. Franco-hebdo vise à informer et divertir la communauté francophone locale, en présentant des sujets d’intérêt général et d’actualité dans les domaines de la vie économique, sociale, culturelle et sportive. À l’inverse du début, des représentants d’organismes contactent de plus en plus les membres de l’équipe pour leur proposer des sujets. Franco-hebdo prévoit augmenter l’implication des élèves du secondaires de la région et créer un volet artistique. L’émission offre une importante occasion de favoriser et de promouvoir la vie en français chez nous.
Créé par l’Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario — Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry (ACFO-SDG), avec le soutien de la Fondation canadienne pour le dialogue des cultures, le Concours LOLMort de rire! s’adresse aux Franco-ontariennes et Franco-ontariens âgés de 14 à 18 ans qui souhaitent découvrir l’univers humoristique au travers de l’écriture et de l’interprétation d’un numéro d’humour en français. Sous la houlette d’humoristes professionnels de Gestion Juste pour rire et de l’École nationale de l’humour, les jeunes francophones inscrits à ce concours participent, accompagnés par des animateurs culturels et des enseignants locaux, à des ateliers de formation portant sur l’écriture humoristique et l’interprétation scénique. À l’issue de leur formation initiale, les artistes comiques en herbe appelés à présenter leur numéro sur scène bénéficient d’un accompagnement personnalisé qui leur permettra ensuite de se produire devant un véritable public, lors des différents galas des finales régionales, puis de la grande finale provinciale du Concours. Les lauréats de la finale intègreront la Troupe LOL qui participera à des spectacles auprès d’artistes professionnels partout au pays. historical walking tour It’s like taking a step back in time – literally. » BY TODD LIHOU
The Cornwall Historic Walking Tour was unveiled in 2016, and is set to grow again this year, with 30 plaques dotting the Seaway City’s waterfront and both business districts, that document the rich history our community has dating back to before the founding of this great country. The Founding of New Johnstown (which later became Cornwall), the evolution of the Cornwall Canal and waterfront, as well as the history of industry and small businesses is detailed in a walking tour that stretches from the R.H. Saunders Generating Station, all the way to the city’s downtown and Le Village districts.

work,” said Dr. Michel Dubuc, chair of Le Village and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the tour. “The walking tour is an excellent example of the great things that happen when organizations enter into partnerships.” Indeed, the Cornwall Historic Walking Tour is a collaborative effort that came about through an agreement fostered by Le Village, the Downtown Business Improvement Area, the City of Cornwall and Heart of the City. All of these agencies, with the help of senior government grants, have funded or otherwise lent expertise and resources to make the project a reality.
The plaques feature art work created by Cornwall painter Pierre Giroux, who with some help from historian Lily Worrall, delved into the city’s past through archival material and historic photographs. What resulted was original art work for each plaque that provides a rich mosaic with everything from the interior of the Capitol Theatre, to the smoking ruins of the Great Fire of Pitt Street and the tapestries of Nativity Church reproduced in stark detail. The tour was unveiled in 2016 with 20 plaques along Cornwall’s waterfront, and Le Village specifically. This year another 10 plaques were unveiled in downtown Cornwall, to add to the story of our past. “We want local residents, and
visitors to our community, to know about the role downtown landmarks like the Capitol Theatre and Cornwallis Hotel played in building the foundation of our city,” said Brenda Campbell, chair of the Downtown BIA. “It is important to pay tribute to the individuals and businesses that helped put Cornwall on the map.” While passersby can enjoy the tour in any location, and from any direction, the fun begins along the Recreational Path in the west-end of the city with an illustration depicting Gleason’s Lock, or Lock 19 – an integral part of what was once the Cornwall Canal. Stops along the tour include illustrations representing the paper mill, Hotel Dieu Hospital and the
Cornwall Orphanage, to name a few. “I’ve already heard from young people who have enjoyed the tour and get excited about the history of Cornwall,” said Cornwall city councillor Denis Carr, another champion of the walking tour. “These are the kinds of relationships we want to build – to ensure that our traditions live on through future generations.” Information on the tour can be found online, at downtowncornwall. com, as well as levillagebia.com. The NAV’s distinguished Above and Beyond award took place in the CENTRE’s principal banquet room during the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce’ distinguished Business Excellence Awards banquet. The Chamber’s most prestigious event, it attracts well over 200 of the Cornwall area’s leading business professionals. This past year’s recent banquet,
one with a haunting ‘Phantom of the Opera’ theme, the NAV culinary team gained outstanding reviews for the amazing, four course gourmet meal set in front of the guests. Chamber personnel were showered with praise for the quality of the meal, all thanks to the NAV CENTRE team of Chefs. Clearly, the award was well deserved. Then, there was the ‘Wonderful
World of Whisky’, an event that clearly went above and beyond. Cornwall Concrete Products was founded by Howard Lough in 1954. He managed and operated the business, along with his son Allan for many years, until 2003 when ownership was acquired by David Kinnear. Kinnear has sought to maintain a strong connection with the past by retaining its well-established business name and original building site on Seventh Street West. Beyond 21 is the dream of a parent who saw a need to address a gap in services for adults with developmental disabilities as they moved from high school to community. It was a simple yet profound dream. This dream was to create a center that would become a Hub. This Hub would be a meeting place where adults with developmental disabilities could gather and learn new skills, continue to build on existing skills, meet friends, engage with their community, and move forward with life. A place where adults with developmental disabilities could come together and connect … connect with each other, connect with community, connect with jobs, connect with learning, and most of all connect with their role as valued members of our community. And that is what “The Hub for Beyond 21 Foundation” became. Beyond 21 currently serves over 40 families throughout SD& G. Beyond 21 gives back to the community each year through our fundraising partnerships including the Cornwall Food Fest, Cornwall’s only street festival celebrating our downtown on the third Saturday in August (Saturday, August 19th, 2017); the House Tour and Spring Market (June 25th in partnership with Scotiabank), Lolo’s Chili Cookoff, Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race, and the Moon River Run! For the past 20 years the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre has been assisting local residents to maneuver through the process of opening their own businesses “Our services and programs are open to anyone in Cornwall, SD&G and Akwesasne,” says Candy Pollard, Business Consultant. “Each

entrepreneur has a different skill set yet common to success is a viable business idea, the drive to act on it and a solid business plan.” Two of the more popular programs have been Summer Company and Starter Company, programs designed to assist entrepreneurs turn their dreams into reality by providing mentoring as well as initial start-up funds. Over the last few years 38
local residents have participated in the Starter Company Program, while 50 students have operated summer companies. Both programs are funded by the Government of Ontario and administered by the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. One successful entrepreneur is Garrett Vanderburg, owner of Sharp V Mfg near the Cornwall Regional Airport. Mr. Vanderburg purchased a tool and die shop and has taken advantage of available programming. “Starter Company has been a great help with accessing funds to upgrade some of my equipment,” says Mr. Vanderburg. “It has helped ensure that Sharp V Mfg will be around for years to come.” Crystal Primeau took part in the Summer Company program in 2013 selling handmade jewellery. Upon graduation from her esthetics course in 2016 she visited the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre and applied to the Starter Company Program for assistance in opening her own day spa, Beautique. “The Business Enterprise Centre is an amazing resource in the community,” says Ms. Primeau. “Sometimes you don’t know where to go with starting your business so
it is really nice to have someone to help you step by step through the whole entire process.” This year, Starter Company evolved into a more accessible program called Starter Company PLUS. Open to anyone 18 years of age and older, it offers the same training, mentoring and access to capital as the previous Starter Company did. John Primeau is the owner of Rolling Road, a company providing motorcycle testing and performance upgrades. “I am a certified auto-technician with a passion for motorcycles - putting the two together is a dream come true for me,” he said. “The Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre has helped me to develop a business plan, a start-up budget and financial forecast. I’ve been able to access information on government regulations, HST and other business topics. What is new in Akwesasne? Many new projects and initiatives are underway or have been recently completed, including an A’nowara’kowa Arena grounds development project (soon to be announced), new community walking trails, a fiber optic broadband system, an outdoor rink at Generations Park, and expansion and improvement to the Thompson Island Cultural Camp. What are some cultural foods? Peace tree trade Centre, a centre of growth Since 1992, the Peace Tree Trade Centre has generated economic growth for the people of Akwesasne and has helped small business owners and entrepreneurs realize their dreams. A 25 year anniversary celebration will take place this summer. “It began as a project to assist Akwesasne community members to incubate and grow their businesses,” said Nola Benedict, Project Development Officer for Economic Development with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA). “Business operating at the Trade Centre have to be at least 51 percent owned by a member of our community with exception to the Bank of Montreal, who has a special agreement with the MCA to provide financial services to the community.” There are a variety of stores that call the Peace Tree Trade Centre home, one such store is Akwesasne Sports. Owner Doreen Mitchell opened the first Akwesasne Sports store in 1998, and opened the location at the Peace Tree Trade Centre in 2004. Akwesasne Sports is a family business run by a sports minded family that still design their own apparel for hockey and lacrosse and are able to produce custom designs on demand. They also have in house embroidery. Currently they outfit
local sports teams like the Akwesasne Storm lacrosse players and the NAHL hockey team the Akwesasne Wild. When shopping at Akwesasne Sports you will find name brand apparel like Traditional Lacrosse and Under Armour. They are also a Maximum Edge location for sharpening skates. If you want to look good on and off the field, then head a few doors down at the Trade Centre to Babes Cosmetic Company. Tisha and Kiera Thompson, co-owners of Babes Cosmetic Company are a mother and daughter team. They produce, design and sell cosmetics which are cruelty-free as well as all natural. Glamour make up classes are also offered. Tisha has five years of experience working with makeup, but 26 years total in beauty care that she spent as a hair dresser. The business is named after the daughter who is nick named, “Babes.” Besides their home store they travel to trade shows. Babes Cosmetic Company is expected to open their doors on July 1st of this year. Other tenants at the Trade Centre include AEDA (Akwesasne Economic Development Agency) who offer business support services and Mohawk language classes and learning materials to community and anyone interested
in learning. Purple Ribbon Gift Shop has been a long term tenant at the Trade Centre since 2001 and offers moccasins, clothing, jewelry, tobacco products and other unique gift items, some of which are locally made. The Trade Centre family continues to grow as it is getting ready to welcome another new tenant, “Ionkwanikonhriiosne” Creative Sewing Centre. Quilters and sewing enthusiasts will have another destination to find quality fabric and inspirational sewing classes. They are expected to open their doors by June. “We’re at the stage now where we want to give the Trade Centre more attention,” said Benedict. “It is an aging structure and we are excited at the possibility of upgrading in the upcoming few years.” One future plan would see a redesign of the parking lot to accommodate permanent outdoor market stalls. As it is now, the MCA has already upgraded the lighting in the parking lot by changing them to energy efficient LEDs. The Peace Tree Trade Centre will continue to support Akwesasne’s entrepreneurs and invites all shoppers to come and take a look!

10 YEARS OF SMILES Dr. Mohamed Sharbin shakes his head and smiles. For this seasoned dental surgeon, it’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since he first opened a clinic in Cornwall and today, from his beautiful clinic in the shadow of the Benson Centre. “When I first visited Cornwall, I was struck by the friendliness of the people and thought to myself — this is a community I would like to call home,” smiles Sharbin. “And during my visit, I discovered that Dr. Norman Roy, a highly respected dentist in the community was planning to retire and that his practice would become available.” This positive first impression of the community, the serendipity of a practice being available, and the belief that Cornwall was a perfect place to raise his family, Mohamed acquired Dr. Roy’s practice and he has never looked back. Sharbin’s journey to Cornwall covered many thousands of miles. He first graduated with a degree in Dentistry in 1994 and after moving to Canada,
earned a second degree in 2003 from the prestigious Dental school at Dalhousie University in Halifax. After practicing in the Maritimes for a few years, Dr. Sharbin moved to Ontario and more specifically, the Bay Quinte region. 2007 saw him arrive in Cornwall, and the rest is history.
Today, the Smiles On Seventh dental clinic operates out of a spacious and well-appointed building adjacent to the Brookdale Mall. It offers a full range of dental services including preventative, restorative, cosmetic, and orthodontic services, as well as extractions and implant dentistry. Dr. Sharbin has put together an enviable roster of dentistry professionals. “Each member of our team come equipped with the state-of-the-art skills so essential in today’s environment of dental health and I’d like you to meet them.” He then continues with a chuckle. “I should point out that many of our patients meet Abdoul and assume he’s my son,” smiles Sharbin. “In actual fact — he’s my much younger brother.” Liliane Malczewski, a Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) hails from Pointe Claire, Quebec. After earning a Health Sciences degree from College Brébeuf, she continued her studies at Université de Montréal in Dentistry and
after a successful internship in Public Health Dentistry, she was awarded her Doctorate in 2011. Abdoul Sharbin, DMD, also comes from the West Island of Montreal. After earning his doctorate in Medical Dentistry, he practiced in the National Capital region before joining Smiles On Seventh. Of note is his ongoing commitment to the most recent advancements in dentistry and he regularly attends professional development seminars. Ryan El-Majzoub earned his Medical Dental degree from Université de Montréal before travelling to New York where he completed a General Practice Residency at the Montefiore Medical Centre. He first set up a practice in Northern Ontario, becoming the only full time dentist in the entire region, but eventually, he decided it was time to put down permanent roots and happily for the community, he settled into both life and a professional career in Cornwall. Along with his three associates, Dr. Sharbin was pleased that Dr. Roy, from whom he acquired the practice, remained in a consulting role until his retirement in mid-2016. Roy, well known in the community, was a valued asset to Smiles On Seventh, and while he has been
missed, the entire Smiles On Seventh team wished he and Maryl well in their retirement. In support of the practicing dentists, Sharbin has put together an impressive group of hygienists, dental assistants, and administrators. All told, this team of more than 12 professionals are always poised and ready to meet their patient’s needs. Adding to the team is the clinic itself. Colourful and beautifully appointed, patients arriving for their appointment are immediately calmed by the warm and comfortable ambience. Fairview Garage Ltd. has always been, and still is, a family-run dealership. “One thing that hasn’t changed is the way we do business,” said Karl, who received his bachelor of arts in automotive marketing from the Canadian Automotive Institute, as well as a BA in automotive management from the University of Western Sydney. “The products often change, and the
way vehicles are marketed to the public. “We still continue to provide our customers with a wide range of vehicle options. But what also hasn’t changed is the way we do business. It’s important for our customers to enter our dealership and know they only have to deal with one point of contact for all of their questions and business dealings. Located in the heart of Cornwall’s downtown core sits Commerce Court, home of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. The voice of the city’s business community for over 125 years, the association advocates for business from its own professional office building. Recently, Commerce Court has seen a sharp boost in activity as economic development and entrepreneurial agencies have combined under one roof. Along with the Chamber, Commerce Court is now the professional home for the Community Futures Development Corporation and the Business Development Bank of Canada. These agencies, while each having separate mandates, have a common purpose: to promote the economic growth and prosperity for business in the regions of Cornwall, the United Counties, and Akwesasne. “The Community Futures Development Corporation or, the CFDC is a federally funded, not for profit agency,” states Executive Director, Lesley Lang. “Our mission is to deliver financing, business support, community planning and economic development solutions. We’re an independent organization governed entirely by volunteers.” Joining the Chamber and CFDC is the local office of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), a federal crown corporation exclusively
Lezlie Strasser, Lesley Lang and Rose D’Amato devoted to entrepreneurs. “Our purpose is to help develop small and medium-sized Canadian businesses through a combination of financing and advisory services,” says Senior Account Manager, Rose D’Amato. “Being located in Commerce Court gives both CFDC and BDC strategic advantages,” declare Lang and D’Amato. “We provide complementary services for entrepreneurs and being under the same roof, it allows us to effectively collaborate in helping business owners succeed.” Overarching these agencies is the Chamber itself, directed by its Executive Manager, Lezlie Strasser. “Both the CFDC and BDC provide valuable services to the small business sector,” notes Strasser. “The Chamber, as the voice of the area’s business
community, can provide the link between the two and that enhances our mutual effectiveness.” Strasser goes on to describe Commerce Court’s location. “From our building on Second Street in the downtown core, we’re minutes from City Hall, Cornwall’s administrative offices, and S.D. & G’s County seat,” she states. “Coupled with other businesses, financial institutions and restaurants, all immediately accessible, Commerce Court is not only strategic for our tenant partners, it is close to all manner of convenient services.” These business focused agencies, along with the Heart of the City offices, also housed at Commerce Court, provide an enviable suite of services, all combined to help the community prosper.

However, amid any misfortune, it’s important to have someone to turn to. “Most people don’t want to see us, because if they’re seeing us, it’s because they’ve had some sort of disastrous event happen,” says Carolyne. “But it’s nice to be there and help get them out of it.” One of their proudest moments was being the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award. Winmar Cornwall is proud to help, not only when you’re in a pickle, but also through continuous support of charitable efforts and community groups. They are proud supporters of the Benson Centre, Rotary Club, Cornwall Community Hospital and Seaway Valley Theatre Company, to name a few. “It’s a difficult business we’re in, but it’s very rewarding when you can help people,” says Carolyne.
