*Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous year-end. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield.

LAUNCH PARTY 2017 Nick Seebruch - nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc CORNWALL, Ontario - The Nav Centre was full of excitement last Wednesday afternoon after the much anticpated cover to the tenth edition of the Cornwall Living Magazine was revealed. Melanie Brulée, a born and raised musician from Cornwall, graced the cover of the magazine this year. “She is a great example of what Cornwall can offer people and where they can go given the opportunities
offered here,” said Bob Peters of Choose Cornwall. “Everywhere she plays she is an ambassador for Cornwall.” Seaway News General Manager Rick Shaver explained the goals of this year’s edition of the magazine. “In today’s edition, the 24th in our series of business magazines and the tenth anniversary of Cornwall Living, we celebrate what makes you want to choose Cornwall,” he said. He also highlighted some of the great stories to come out of Cornwall that the magazine was able to tell.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For 23 years the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Cornwall have been holding their annual golf tournament, the funds of which go towards supporting the many programs that this organization offers local children. “This program helps us to serve over 400 children in our community in seven different mentoring programs,” said Amanda Brisson, Executive Director of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall. This year, the tournament will be at the
Cornwall Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, July 19 and will start at 12:30 p.m. Every year the event is a complete sell-out with 144 participants, those interested in signing up can call the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters office at 613-933-8035. This event raises on average $20, 000 every year for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters which helps them deliver their programs to more of the children who are currently on their waiting list. “Right now there are 119 children waiting to be brought into our program,” said Brisson.”That’s why events like this are so important so we can get through our waiting list.”

Allister MacDonell
South Glengarry son sowing seeds for the future Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
At 18-years-old Allister MacDonell has plans to grow his future and actively participate in his home community. Since graduating from Char-Lan District High School last year, Allister has been working hard on getting his real-estate license. On May 1, he also took a job as the new Event Coordinator and Member Services coordinator at the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. Being fresh out of high school is a time in the life of most people when they search for what they want to do with their future and where they want to live, but Allister has his career goals set and knows that he wants to spend his time in the community where he
grew-up. “I just decided to get down to the work and spend time with the people. I’m more of a hands-on person,” he said. “I like talking to people and I want to find the right home for them,” he said of his decision to enter the real-estate business. Allister explained that he wanted work for the Chamber of Commerce because he wanted to start building connections and relationships with the local business community now. “I wanted to get involved with businesses in Cornwall and get to know more people from the Cornwall area,” he said. “I love working here. I’ve get to meet a bunch of new people every day and the people here are great to work with.” Allister grew-up on his family’s farm in South Glengarry, he plans on working on that
farm and starting up his own real-estate brokerage in the future. He’s been involved in sports, organizations and charity events in South Glengarry. He’s served on the Williamstown Farm Board, he’s helped out at the Highland Games and has helped out with the Char-Lan Junior B Hockey team. In February he helped organize a charity hockey tournament in Williamstown that raised money for the Julie MacLachlan Foundation. “The reason I choose to stay in my home town of South Glengarry is because I feel privileged to in live in an area that holds a lot of great opportunities for me to prosper personally and professionally,” said Allister. “I take a lot of pride in my values, such as family, friends and commitment towards my community.”
Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry awarded AMCTO 2017 E.A. Danby Certificate of Merit Handout from SD&G Tourism UNITED COUNTIES OF SD&G, Ontario - Chief Administrative Officer T.J. Simpson announced today that the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) has been awarded the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) 2017 E.A. Danby Certificate of Merit under the Municipal Administration Category (Municipal Population 20,000 or more) in recognition of SDG’s innovative Tourism Information Sign Management Program. “This merit certificate, awarded to SDG by one of Ontario’s premier municipal staff organizations, recognizes the quality of products and services that the County continues to develop and
deliver. These services are designed to enhance the quality of life for our residents, businesses, and visitors. It is quite an honour to be recognized in this fashion by AMCTO, especially when one considers the breadth and quality of submissions made for these awards,” said Mr. Simpson. “Designed by SDG staff, the Tourism Information Sign on-line application is a simple fillable form used by businesses and organizations to efficiently request and locate available tourism signage. The program streamlines signage requests, makes information easy to search, manages internal data and provides users with an interactive mapping tool which is accessible through multiple devices, greatly improving the customer experience,” explains SDG Tourism
Coordinator Shauna Baggs, who was responsible for developing the new program. This innovative project was a collaboration between multiple County departments/divisions, most notably the Regional Tourism division of Corporate Services and the GIS division of the Transportation and Planning Services Department. This collaborate effort created a web-based data management tool that also provides users with the ability to visually locate identified tourism signs or request new signs on a real-time map. SDG staff will formally accept the certificate of merit at the AMCTO Conference Opening Ceremonies, slated for June 12th, 2017 in Huntsville, Ontario.

schools,” said Bancroft. In a close decision, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) voted in March to close the secondary school program at R-O and send those students to Tagwi Secondary School in Avonmore. The school board also re-drew the boundary map in South Stormont so that in future only students from Ingleside would be sent to R-O, which casts doubt on the school’s future ability to sustain itself. During the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) process, parents and supporters of the school formulated a plan to fill empty spaces at R-O, which included re-introducing French Immersion, but that plan was rejected. “I felt like the chairman of that committee made up his mind a long time ago on R-O,” said Bancroft. “It wasn’t about the students and it wasn’t about the empty spaces, it was a political decision.”
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
INGLESIDE, Ontario - Parents and students of Rothwell-Osnabruk K-12 school gathered across the street from the schools parking lot to rally and show their desire to save their secondary school program is still strong. South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft spoke to the crowd and explained that the fight will continue. “I want to emphasize to the students, the parents, the friends that this is not over, not over by a long shot,” he said. He pointed out that on May 21, their request for an appeal was successful and that a government appointed facilitator will be coming to Ingleside to assess the situation, but he cautioned that this did not guarantee success. “Niagra Falls, Lincoln County tried everything they could and they are still losing three
Proposal tackles cellular dead zones across Eastern Ontario
UNITED COUNTIES OF SD&G, Ontario - The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry is pleased to support efforts by the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) to seek federal and provincial support to improve cellular coverage in the region. Gaps in cellular services are standing in the way of the region’s economic growth and public safety. EORN is proposing a $213 million publicprivate partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cellular data services in the region. According to an engineering study commissioned by EORN: • About one quarter of the area where there are homes, businesses or major roads in the region cannot access any cellular services. • Depending on the cell carrier, another 28% to 40% of the area has inadequate capacity to provide high quality mobile broadband service given the demand, which continues to grow. The gaps are the result of market failure. Rural areas don’t generate enough revenue for
cell carriers to build adequate services. The CRTC recently designated both mobile and fixed broadband as basic services for all Canadians. A public-private partnership would reduce carriers’ infrastructure costs, creating a stronger business case to improve services and meet the CRTC’s basic services goals. EORN has submitted a detailed business case for cell expansion to the federal and provincial governments. The proposal also includes a dedicated, public safety broadband network to seamlessly connect first responders regionwide. Building both networks together would cost about $299 million, saving about $47 million compared to building them separately “In my view, this is the most important project EORN is currently work on,” said United Counties of SD&G Warden Jim Bancroft. “Expanded mobile broadband access and capacity will ensure that Eastern Ontario remains competitive with other regions, not only in Ontario or Canada, but the world.”
South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft tells R-O students not to give up (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).
Champions oF WorkForCe Development The Eastern Ontario Training Board has been helping the people of Cornwall, SDGPR and Akwesasne augment their employment skills for nearly 20 years. Hundreds of individuals looking to enter the workforce, return to work or improve upon the skills and assets they possess have turned to the EOTB to make a splash in the local labour market. The mandate of the EOTB has remained consistent since the agency was incorporated in 1998 – to ensure access to quality local
labour market information; engage employers to help identify skill gaps, employment opportunities and training needs; support stronger linkages among employment services, including the Akwesasne Area Management Board, to help workers find jobs and careers. The agency has branched out to address the needs of newcomers to our community, including individuals who have moved to the Cornwall area from other communities and countries.

Info warped Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Some might look at the state of political discourse in the States and be repulsed by the name calling, pointless posturing over something as simple as a handshake and lack of intelligent conversation. Some might ask why a weekly, local, newspaper journalist should be concerned over something that doesn’t happen here, but it does happen here. Thanks to the availability of media, partisan politics can and has seeped into every level of society across the world. The truth is that there are media outlets out there who have no interest in informing their audience with facts, only in winning political points for whatever cause they’re selling. I’m not here to rail against so-called “fake news” I’m here to warn against believing that your neighbours, friends or even family are the “enemy” just because they believe something different. Media outlets that use tactics like name calling, or absolute statements, or who paint those
who believe something different as the enemy do a disservice to public discourse and public good. If I’m right leaning and my neighbour is on the left, that doesn’t mean that I need to think that he is my enemy, or that all of his ideas are wrong. That would be a weak and close-minded way of thinking. Again the reason I’m talking about this as a local journalist, is because I deal in the communication of information, so being open minded to information is important to me and so is constructive debate. Believing a person who disagrees with you is trying to attack you, and responding with name calling shrinks the possibility of co-operation and promotes division. Don’t accept everything at face value, always do your own research, but don’t get offended if someone presents a set of facts that disagree with your worldview. Approach others with empathy, approach new information with an open mind, do your own research, and reject those who promote division and degradation
Canadians have to get used to more frequent floods Sultan Jessa Parts of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have been devastated by never before seen floods. It will take many years and unbelievable expenses for people to get their lives back to normal. The recent floods should serve as a warning to everyone. Many of us blame the gods and our own bad luck for the floods. But, reputable scientists and experts on the environment stress the main culprit for the floods is global warming. They agree
heavy rains and terrible flooding were certainly caused by global warming. According to Paul Beckwith, a climate systems scientist who teaches at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, there is a very clear picture emerging of changes to the chemistry of the atmosphere with more greenhouse gases. Record amount of rain this spring saturated the soils and could not absorb all the water. St. Lawrence River was higher than it normally is. Also Lake Ontario hit the highest recorded level
Dear Editor, The medical officers of health several Canadian cities are discussing the merits of adding fluoride to their municipal water, to prevent cavities in the teeth of young children. Adding fluoride to municipal water corrodes the pipes at the water plant and for a city the size of Cornwall, the fluoride costs around $50,000 per year. However, as the Mohawk community on Cornwall Island is well aware, it is
possible to use industrial smoke stacks to give a mega-dose of fluoride to an unsuspecting community. The pro-fluoride advocates may actually be creating possible business opportunities for interested Mohawk entrepreneurs. Some 2-years ago, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) releases some information that cheap tea from India and China contains elevated levels of fluoride. In some municipalities, giving the kids home brewed
alarming rate. Countries like China, India and the United States have to work in unison to tackle carbon emissions. President Trump and his staff are currently deciding whether to keep America in the nearly 200-country Paris Agreement negotiated a couple of years ago. Scientists predict floods will become more frequent as global temperatures continue to rise. Spring weather is arriving earlier and fall weather is arriving later than ever before. This is reality.
(decaffeinated) tea would provide them with the required amount of fluoride. Herbal teas grown in soil that contains fluoride, like the soil on Cornwall Island, would also contain fluoride. Mohawk entrepreneurs who wish to grow fluoride herbal tea could contact the pro-fluoride activists in many towns and cities in the USA and Canada, to offer the option of Cornwall Island grown herbal teas. It may be cheaper for municipalities
to distribute fluoride herbal teas to interested citizens instead of adding fluoride to their municipal drinking water. Cornwall no longer adds fluoride to their municipal water and that situation may open the door for Mohawk entrepreneurs to meet with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit about promoting locally grown fluoride enriched herbal tea in Eastern Ontario. MUSING MUNCHIES: Talk about taking a financial hit: Sudbury (aka traxpayers) has been ordered to pay a woman badly injured in a car accident during a snowstorm seven years ago $14 million. The lawsuit claimed that the municipality was too slow in cleaning the road and that caused the accident. The judge agreed. When the tax man comes calling Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings It finally happened. After reading and hearing about it, I finally got THE CALL. A man who identified himself as officer Greg Williams of the tax department left a message on my voicemail. Officer Williams said I owed the federal government a lot of money and if I didn’t pay up pronto the cops would be at my door to take me away in handcuffs. It is, of course, a scam. But what the heck, I had time on my hands, so I called “Officer Williams”. He thanked me for calling back and announced that I owed the Canadian government $5,000. (The call came from a North Carolina area code). Told him I lived on a small pension and didn’t have that kind of money. He put me on hold. Came back a few seconds later and said how about $2,500? Still too much. On hold again. Came back with his “final” offer - $1,500, or else the cops would be at my door within the hour. Told him I didn’t want to be arrested, so would he give me a couple of hours to try and scrape up the cash. Okay, he said, but don’t delay. That was two weeks ago. Haven’t heard back from Officer Marshall. Perhaps it has something to do with the telephone number I gave him, the one where he could reach me when he called back - 1-888495-8501. That is the number for the RCMP anti-fraud squad.

Getting that tomato sauce stain off your counter top is easier than you think. Simply wet the stain with lemon juice, let sit for 30 minutes or so, and them sprinkle baking soda on the abrasive-side of an all-purpose sponge and scrub the discoloured area. Most stains will vanish.

Buddies on a bench CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids House of Hope is installing Buddy Benches in Cornwall and SD&G. The Buddy Bench is a way for children to let others know that they need a buddy. “If a child doesn’t have anyone to play with, they can sit on the bench and other kids will know they don’t have anyone to play with and come and play with them,” said House of Hope Executive Directior Kim Lauzon. “We saw the idea online and thought it would be a great fit with Rachel’s Kids.” Rachel’s Kids conducted a poll of six locations for where the place their two Buddy Benches.

Cassidy Vaillancourt, 6, and Amy Vaillancourt, 4, hangout on a Rachel’s Kids Buddy Bench at Rachel’s Kids House of Hope on Thursday, May 18
Ultimately, Williamstown Public and Eamer’s Corner’s Public School were selected as the two locations for the Rachel’s Kids Buddy Bench. Events like the Rachel’s Kids Garden Party help make programs like the Buddy Bench possible. The Garden party is entering its 13th year and will be held on June 3 at the Ramada Inn. Last year the Garden party raised $148, 000. Every year, the Garden Party features fun food, entertainment and a live and a silent auction. Tickets are available at Dr. Navaneelan’s dental office on Ninth St. near the McConnell intersection and at Rachel’s Kids House of Hope at the Boundary Rd. and Tyotown intersection.

Terry Boissonneault is Lahaie & Sullivan’s Pay it Forward winner for the month of May for all of the time she donates to St. Peter’s Church. “Terry is an unsung hero here at the church.” said Father Matthew Brunet. “She donates so much time and talent here at the parish: She visits the sick in their homes, goes to both schools at lunch time to do crafts with the kids, meets all parents for baptisms and makes each of them feel welcome, especially if they haven’t been to church in a while. She handles the kids groups, makes cards for everyone from scratch and is always available to help in any way she can. When I was sick, she took care of me here and ran the parish. She’s amazing!!” She was presented the award on Mother’s Day after mass at St. Peter’s.

We would like to highlight some of our Big for a Days. These Bigs are assets to the agency and help us out by taking out Littles who are waiting for their permanent Big. Christine is one of our loyal Big for a Days and often takes out 2-3 littles for us. She is an amazing Big and once had her own match that was 5 years long. Now that she’s a busy mother of two she helps us out once a month taking out any and every kid she can possible to come and experience some fun with the agency. Not only does she take out our littles she’s often one of the first to reach out when we need volunteer help. Thank you Christine for being an amazing mentor to our youth!

Seeds of change at Incredible Edible Festival
$25
The Incredible Edible Festival has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception in 2012. Bill Carriere is one of the founding members of Transition Cornwall and says that what began as more of a giveaway has evolved into a family-oriented day of garden-related activities. “One of the things we try to do with Transition Cornwall is form partnerships,” said Carriere. “More and more partners came on and we began to expand what the event was.” Speaking of partnerships, the Ontario Trillium Foundation was on hand at the event to present Transition Cornwall with a grant for their New Community Garden Network. From left, Alex de Wit and 18 month old daughter, Adalynn, Kat Rendek, and Bill Carriere at the fifth annual Incredible Edible Festival. (Alycia Douglass/TC Media)
