“People are starting to acknowledging it more now,” said Ferguson. “It feels good to help the people in need and bring out the awareness.” The Walk for ALS began as a cross-Canada initiative in 2004 and is currently the ALS Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Regional Manager of the ALS Society, Lianne Johnston says that this morning, online funds were already at $10,000, expecting to reach their year-end goal of $35,000. “We are very reliant on the money that comes in from the walks,” said Johnston. “Sixty percent of funds raised goes to help the clients directly, which includes home visits, support groups, and most of the equipment they’re going to need as they go through the disease. The other 40 percent goes towards funding research projects.” So far, McIntyre is still able to shower on his own with the help of a shower chair donated by the ALS Society. “What I can’t do, my wife helps me with,” said McIntyre. “The support, the love, the friends, and From left, nieces, Marina St. Marseille, Annie St. Marseille with the 2017 face of the neighbours has been pretty humbling.” Cornwall Walk for ALS, John McIntyre, Laura St. Marseille, and Victoria Cotnam. CORNWALL, Ontario - John McIntyre has been an advocate for ALS for a number of years after losing a dear friend to the disease. After being diagnosed with ALS last November, McIntyre is this year’s face of the Cornwall Walk for ALS. “I’m glad to be this year’s face of the ALS Walk, but it is bittersweet,” said McIntyre. Praising the ALS Society for their commitment to clients, McIntyre says that everyone he’s been involved with has been wonderful. “From the ALS Clinic to the ALS loan cupboard - anytime I need something, somebody is there to make my day-to-day life easier,” said McIntyre. Event coordinators, Melanie Brisson and Melissa Ferguson have been organizing the event for the past six years since Ferguson lost her brother to ALS in 2011. “It runs in her family, so it means a lot for us to do it,” said Brisson. “Every year, it seems to be getting a little bigger.” Ferguson says that prior to the viral Ice Bucket Challenge, many people were unfamiliar with the disease.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids Garden Party has done a lot of growing since it began 13 years ago. The event, which helps to raise money for children on a local and global scale, with the House of Hope being the newest venture to benefit. “We’re raising money for children - a lot of it is going to the House of Hope,” said Dr. Rachel Navaneelan. “ It takes a village to raise a child. Whether they are healthy or whether they are not, they all need our help.” Hoping to top last year’s total of $150,000, Dr. Navaneelan said she was ‘optimistic’ that they would reach their goal. With over 600 people in attendance, she praised the community for their unwavering support throughout the years. “It’s getting bigger and bigger, and as usual the community has come out even though the
weather is not the very best,” said Dr. Navaneelan. “I’m not surprised - that’s what this community is like.” Co-chair for this year’s event was none other than 13-year-old Alex Tourangeau, who beat cancer and has since become somewhat of a local hero. With Tourangeau being at the forefront of the event, he says the special attention has been ‘different.’ Local non-profit organization, We 3 Girls also had an exciting announcement to make at the Garden Party, revealing that Rachel’s Kids and House of Hope had been chosen as this year’s benefiting charity for their annual Trunk Sale fundraiser. “After a long month of processing and reviewing applications, selecting finalists, and meeting and touring facilities, we presented our findings to our panel last Monday,” said Julie Hickman of We 3 Girls. “We very much look forward to working with Dr. Rachel and her team to help raise a very large sum of money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Handout from Summer Beer Fest For the third summer in a row, Summer Beer Fest will showcase craft beer, local food and great music. But the team behind the popular event, held on June 24th at Lamoureux Park, wants to make sure the festival’s overarching theme isn’t lost. Celebrating the community has always been the main driver for event founder and organizer Sebastien “Mani” Manigat. “Cornwall is a tight community and we’re proud of that,” he says. “The proof is in the number of businesses and organizations, small and big, from here and from afar, that have contributed to making this the best Summer Beer Fest so far.” From government partners to luxury brands to small, local businesses, Summer Beer Fest’s partners and sponsors’ list is deep: - The City of Cornwall - The Government of Ontario (Ontario 150 program) - Ontarioeast - Oris Watches - Seaway News - Connect & Go - Dunet Communications Network - Axxis Optical - Ramada Inn - Best Western - Comfort Inn - Cristill Rock - Aleienated.ca - Truffles Burger Bar - Limelight Entertainment - Manchee Media - Nectar and Mixology - Framed Photography - BAM Laser Works - Kings and Little Ones - Farm + Forest - Here Not There - Ground Soap - Yoga with Franny - Cornwall Transit - Enterprise Rent-A-Car - Active Transportation Group - Fence Depot - Rhoice Marketing Through this event, Summer Beer Fest is working hard to shine the spotlight on our region’s diversity and dynamism. “Cornwall comes together at Summer Beer Fest,” explains Justin Towndale, Community Partnerships Coordinator for Summer Beer Fest . “It’s our time to have fun and celebrate who we are and what we have to offer as a city, and to share that with other who might not know much about us.” But Justin reiterates that Summer Beer Fest’s success comes as a result of the community’s backing. “This event is nothing without the people and partners who pitch in and push us to be bigger and better. We’re so grateful for everyone who believe in this event!” Summer Beer Fest takes place on June BLEED 24th at Lamoureux Park. Tickets — $25 for early bird, $30 for general admission and $90 for deluxe tickets — are on sale at www. summerbeerfest.ca.

Cornwall’s Little Historian petitions for House of Refuge recognition and prominent Canadian figures. We often forget to shine light on the every day common folk who played a part in shaping Canada into the nation we live in today, no matter how big or small their contribution may have been. People that stayed in these “Poor House” facilities were Canadian Citizens from every walk of life. When people hear the term “Poor House” or “Asylum” they often associate these places with people they deem “less than” others in society. The goal in commemorating “Poor House” facilities is to remind our current and future generations that the people who stayed in these facilities were human. These citizens mattered, and I believe a day to commemorate the lives of these people will show current and future Canadians exactly that. When creating a petition for the House of Commons, it cannot be passed until it is supported by five persons, and then it needs to be sponsored by an MP. I’d like to thank Guy Lauzon for sponsoring this petition, and for seeing the importance behind it. In order for a petition to be considered, it needs at minimum, 500 signatures. The petition has 120 days to obtain that amount. I am asking every citizen living in Canada to Cornwall’s Little Historian Sara Lauzon at the House of Refuge monument sign this petition. Let us honour these people, and have this special day considered during the lives of Canadians who suffered at the hands of the House of Commons website: same year we celebrate Canada’s 150th. Let us https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/ add a new chapter to Canada’s history; hon- destitution. Handout from Cornwall’s Little Historian Sara Lauzon CORNWALL, Ontario - On May 23, I started a petition to the House of Commons. On June 1, it was approved and published. I am asking the House of Commons to recognize April 14, of every year, as Poor House Commemoration Day in Canada. This day will commemorate and celebrate the lives of Canadian Citizens and Immigrants that died or lived in an Asylum, a House of Refuge, or a Poor House facility in Canada. The date I have chosen for this holiday is April 14 due to the “Act respecting the Mentally Incompetent Persons and their Estates” being passed in Alberta, in 1937. This Act sounds pleasant, because “respecting” is in the title, however, it was beyond demeaning. This Act marked a growing intrusion of the state into the lives of those they deemed “mentally incompetent or unfit.” Canadian citizens in an asylum were no longer capable of managing their economic affairs. The government stripped these people of their own property. Nine years prior, the government of Alberta stripped their citizens of the ability to reproduce. This disgusting sterilization law was directed at “individuals living in designated state institutions deemed to have undesirable traits.” As Canadians, we discuss, celebrate, and commemorate the lives of famous politicians

given to a person who has trained a few days to study more specific treatments such as laser hair reduction, or microdermabrasion. Many technicians offering these services are not estheticians, they are technicians but call themselves a “skin specialist”. Unfortunately, there are no requirements which force a laser technician to be more educated in the anatomy of the skin. Our prices are always of market value here at NAV Spa. We strongly believe that experience and good results go hand in hand. Our staff has accredited diplomas, is continually taking courses to better themselves, and rest assured: if we don’t know the answer to your question, we will do all the necessary research to find it. These treatments are specialty treatments which require state of the art equipment. We are often asked “how many treatments will I need?” There is no way of guessing the amount. Medications, hormones, stress, are all factors which influence results. After researching for many years, I can assure you that the treatments you receive here at NAV Spa will be of superior quality.

Feel the Experience … I’d like to take this opportunity to inform you, the consumer, on what you can expect when you choose NAV Spa at the NAV Centre as your place to relax, unwind, and indulge yourself... I am speaking to you with 33 years experience in the Esthetic industry. All consumers who enter the Spa to receive a service, to buy a gift card for a loved one, or to simply ask a question, leave happy, feeling a sense of “I went to the right place. They really know their stuff and really care about my needs”. It is something we hear frequently, and we are very proud of it! When asked about competition, well, it’s everywhere and it’s getting fierce!!The consumer today, needs to be careful when choosing an esthetician, laser technician. Here are a few helpful hints which are essential to find a qualified provider. It is very important to consider a technician’s schooling background. There is a difference between a diploma and a certificate. Someone who holds an Esthetics Diploma went to school between 1 to 3 years, studying the skin in depth. An esthetician will have taken courses in facials, manicures, pedicures, electrolysis, waxing, massage, etc... Certificates are generally

The week provides the opportunity to introduce youth to coding and provide educators the resources they need to bring coding education into the classroom, strengthening digital literacy across Canada. “Technology can level the educational playing field, creating farreaching opportunities for all members of our society to develop their talents into skills that will drive innovation.” said Melissa Sariffodeen, CEO of CLC.

Youth achievement recognized Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – On Monday, June 5, CogecoTV’s Cornwall and the Cornwall Optimist Club held the annual Youth Achievement Awards at the Cornwall Legion. “I think it’s a chance to recognize youth in the community for things they might not get recognized for,” said CogecoTV’s Calvin Killoran. This is the fourth year of the event and there were 18 awards in total given out to three
different grade groups across three different categories. The categories were Caring is Cool, At my Best and Difference Maker. “We partnered up with Cogeco and purchased the plaques for the finalists and semifinalists,” said the Optimist Club’s Ralph Brunton. “Our mandate is “friends of youth” and this fits with us. Tonight’s slogan is “Bringing out the best in youth.””

OPINION
Minimum wage and poverty Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
There was a lot of controversy this past week when the Ontario Liberal Government announced their intention to increase the minimum wage by almost 30 percent to $15 an hour. While this is first and foremost a political move by a deeply unpopular Liberal government, ultimately, it is something whose time has come. Let’s consider a few studies on a $15 an hour minimum wage that have been done in the United States. First is a study out of Purdue University done in 2015 that shows how a minimum wage increase would affect the fast-food industry, a primarily minimum wage industry. According to this study titled ‘The Minimum Wage, A Competitive Wage and the Price of a Burger: Can Competitive Wages be Offered in
Limited-Service Restaurants?’ a $15 an hour minimum wage would increase the cost of a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese at McDonalds by 4.3 percent, or $0.21. Is that really too much for the average consumer to bare in exchange for a living wage for thousands? A second study conducted over the course of decades by National Employment Law Project (NELP), an American organization found that most often wage hikes increased employment. The NELP analyzed government data from 1933 to 2009 and found that employment was higher 12 months after the wage hike. You can find the CBC’s analysis of that study on their website. So if a $15 an hour minimum wage will not cost jobs or dramatically increase consumer costs, then what is the reason for opposition? There will always be jobs that are paid Finally, consider this, the minimum wage has and yet can still barely feed themselves and not kept up with the cost of living. If a person is keep up with bills, let alone consider buying a according to the minimum wage, but do workers in those jobs deserve to live in poverty? working a full-time job, 40 to 50 hours a week house, then that is the real problem.
In praise of winter Nick Wolochatiuk ~ Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com
Everyone, including farmers, campers, ice cream vendors, gardeners (and you) is complaining about this year’s cool, wet and windy spring. There’s a big change in the weather on the horizon. You’ll soon be complaining about the oppressive heat and humidity. It wasn’t that long ago that you were griping about winter, so let me remind you about winter’s admirable qualities. Right now, as you mow your lawn and weed your garden, you are beset by mosquitoes and black flies. The Canada geese despoil your lawn. Ever have those problems in winter? During the summer, some properties are littered with discarded toys, broken lawn furniture,
half-finished carpentry projects and an accumulation of left-over roofing material, paint cans, bald tires and abandoned bicycles. However, that same property looks absolutely pristine after a blizzard. Next weekend promises temperatures in the mid-20s and sweltering humidity. Your shopping will have to be done in a hurry because the dog can’t be left in the car anymore. You’ll have to hustle right home to get that frozen pizza, milk and ice cream into the freezer. In the winter you can fish in the middle of the lake without a boat. All you need is an auger. No need to lug an ice box with you. Those lake trout will keep just fine in the plastic bag you brought along. Want to chill the beer? Just stick the cans in the hole. No tornadoes, thunderstorms or hurricanes in
winter. Florida and Texas have air-conditioning costs that are as high as our winter heating bills. Summer utilities are expensive. Night comes early and stays long during the winter. In the summer, it’s hard for the kids to go off to bed if the sun doesn’t set until 9pm. On a sunny Saturday morning, they’re rise-n-shine two hours before you’re ready to get out of bed. If you’re into astronomy, the winter nights come early and stay long. If you’re getting some night flying lessons, darkness comes early. There are no thermals to give you a bumpy ride at 2,000 feet. When flying at night, the highways below are like a route map magically hi-lited with red and white marker pens on black. The street lights and neon make every town light up like a Christmas tree.
ake-off and payload performance of a bush plane takes a quantum leap when the drag and weight of its pontoons are swapped for skis. At Christmas, I feel sorry for the Aussies and the Kiwis. No magic flakes flutter down from the heavens to decorate their tannenbaum. Santa’s sleigh runners will generate a shower of sparks as they drag along the sand or bare asphalt. Many people are tempted to plan an outdoor wedding, only to have it drowned out by a thunderstorm. There is no such temptation to do that in winter. There is absolutely no temptation to paint the deck or re-shingle the roof either. Above all, a snowman is far easier to build than an inukshuk; the raw material is delivered free of charge. To build an inukshuk means a trip to the quarry. See! Winter wasn’t that bad after all!

Spending time in the ER
It’s time for a Second Opinion on your investments.
MONTHS DOWN
no where is this more visible than in the overcrowded ER waiting room. It has come down to this sad fact: It is easier to for a pet to see a vet at an animal hospital than it is to see an ER doctor for a non-life threatening situation at the hospital. Walk-in clinics can set limits on the number of patients seen in one day. Public hospitals can’t. But there are things the hospital could do to provide more dignity to the waiting room wait. Things like making sure there are enough chairs. A separate area for people who have to use one of those shallow “vomit trays”. Put more distance between one of the triage stations and the public. I don’t need to know a stranger’s medical history. There has to be a better way of summoning a patient than bellowing out a name in train conductor “all board” fashion. And why not level with the patient on approximately how long it could take to be seen? Unfortunately, with an aging population and a family doctor shortage, waiting room wait times are not going to improve anytime soon. As one doctor told me, “It is going to get worse before it gets better, if it ever does.” TRIVIA ANSWER Lucien Lamoureux was first elected to the House of Commons for Stormont as a Liberal MP in 1962. It was the closest local federal race ever with Lamoureux defeating Progressive Conservative incumbent Grant Campbell by 70 votes. The next year his margin of victory was more convincing, re-taking the seat by 3,627 votes. He kept the seat in the Liberal fold in 1965 but won the 1968 election as an Independent candidate. As Speaker of the House, Lamoureux felt he should not be a member of a party. He won a

Nobody gets up in the morning and says, “Think I’ll pack a lunch and head over to Cornwall Community Hospital emergency department waiting room and knock off a few hours to get this hangnail checked out.” With few exceptions, the folks who fill up the waiting room are there because they believe they need medical attention. It might not be a lifethreatening situation, but they are concerned enough or in enough discomfort to make their way to the hospital, pay the parking fee and wait up to nine hours to see a doctor. I know, I’ve been there. Back in December I slipped on a patch of ice and bounced my noggin off the civic complex parking lot pavement. A friend drove me to the hospital. Seven hours after picking a number (an idea taken from a meat counter) and a chat with the triage nurse, I still hadn’t been invited through the “Magic Door”. By coincidence I had an appointment with my family doctor later that afternoon, so I checked out. My doctor checked me and said it was probably a mild concussion. Early the next morning I was back at ER ( 4 a.m.) after waking up dizzy and feeling nauseated. This time I was ushered straight through the “Magic Door” and given first-class care. Only a handful of folks were in the waiting room. The rush doesn’t start until about 7 a.m. Cornwall Community Hospital, like so many front-line health-care facilities in Ontario, is struggling to do more with provincial funding that doesn’t keep pace with increased expenses. How to achieve more distance with your shots with proper clubface contact. And likewise, the best contact won’t do any good for distance if there is no speed on the clubhead. In order to acheive distance, you need both. Clubhead speed is controlled by a number of factors and they all need to be working together to get the results you want. The most important factors to remember are: -The speed of the body rotation

This is why even smaller players can punch out a long distance shot as compared to larger, stronger players. The strength in your arms plays little past in gettnig that clubhead up to speed. In fact, those stronger players who feel as if they can just muscle their way through are often disappointed. Don’t let that happen to you. Lastly, when you swing, use about 80% of your strength. Anything above that and you’re probably going to be losing distance rather than gaining it.

-The speed of the arm swing -The speed and timing of the hand release Your leg drive determines the speed of the body rotation, which determines the speed of the arm swing. Proper focus and relaxed arm and hand muscles determine the timing and speed of the release. Turning the legs and hips toward the target will initiate the arm swing and fast loose hands complete this integrated system of movement. The legs are the only part of the motion where strength is critical. The muscles of the upper body should be transmitters NOT generators.

There’s an old adage that says that distance is related to two things: Clubhead speed and correct ball contact. Put these two things together and you have distance. As with many things in golf, this is not an either/or proposition. Both areas have to be in sync for the desired results to occur. The fastest clubhead speed in the world won’t do much for your distance (or ego) if it isn’t accompanied

Learning the rules of the road CORNWALL, Ontario - The bikes were out in full-force this Saturday, June 3 as members of the Cornwall Community Police Bike Unit taught young cyclists about the rules of the road. With helmets and safety equipment being handed out to the first 70 kids registered, it was safety first at the fun-filled event. Warming up with a little bit of Zumba, the kids moved and grooved alongside instructor Christal Bowen and smooth-movin’ Cons. Brian Langlois. In its fourth year, the event has grown tremendously. “We started out with 40 kids in our first year,” said Const. Casey MacGregor. “This year, we’ve had over 100.” After finishing their warm-up, cyclists were split up into three stations, where members of
the CCP Bike Unit taught them useful cycling skills such as steering, signaling and avoiding road hazards. “We call it muscle memory,” said Const. MacGregor. “Typically, once you get used to something, you tend to do it the same way all the time.” Aside from the obvious bonus of bike safety, Const. MacGregor says that cycling is part of a healthy lifestyle, which should be celebrated. “I love to go out and see all the kids on the bike path - Cornwall is great for that,” said Const. MacGregor. “We’ve got bike paths on the waterfront all the way up to Long Sault. It’s great exercise and it’s very scenic.” Summer Terry, 5 and sister, Autumn Terry, 7 were eager to learn the rules of the road at the fourth annual Bikes & Badges event this Saturday, June 3, 2017. Streaks are embarrassing evidence that we didn’t get it clean—they’re dirt or soap left on the surface, and they really stand out because they reflect light differently from the clean, well-rinsed rest of it. Streaks can also result from too much cleaning solution, always follow the recommended amounts and directions. From missed areas while washing, and even from an over wet rag. I’ve avoided streaks by following 1. Clean thoroughly and rinse thoroughly; 2. Overlap strokes when wiping, to make sure you don’t leave any missed areas; 3. All reflective surfaces should be dried with a cloth, not left to air dry.

South Nation Conservation Authority www.voyagesdmcinc.com recently acquired 8.5 acres of forest from the Oschmann family of Ormond. Through the Land I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learnDonations Program, the family has entrusted SNC with the land between downtown Ormond ed her colours yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what colour and their farm. it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door, saying, “Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!”

Golf Cart aCCident
Many years ago during my married days, just prior to my divorce, I accidentally overturned my golf cart. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out: “Are you okay, what’s your name?” “It’s John, and I’m okay thanks,” I replied as I pulled myself out of the twisted cart. “John, she said, “forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll help you get the cart up later.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, “but I don’t think my wife would like it.” “Oh, come on now” Elizabeth insisted. She was so very pretty, very very sexy and very persuasive ... I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed but thought to myself, “my wife won’t like it.” After a couple of restorative Scotch and waters, I thanked Elizabeth. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset. So I’d best go now.” “Don’t be silly!” Elizabeth said with a smile, letting her robe fall open slightly. “She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?” “Still under the cart, I guess.”

Auto Loan Services and Endless Roads RV & Marine Centre is greeting the season with their great selection of cars, pontoons and trailers. Family owned and operated since 2003, a lot has changed since Lawrence and Joanne Cayer got their start. Coming from a new car store, Lawrence used his knowledge and 10 years of experience to venture out on his own with a small used car lot specializing in financing. Joanne was able to keep their then 3 small children at home and manage the paperwork. That was over 15 years ago and together this couple has never looked back. Today they have more than tripled their car inventory. In 2011 Endless Roads Rv’s began in Ingleside with the great Rockwood and Sierra lineup and after 3 years the couple consolidated their businesses into one large location on Cornwall Centre Road. Today, they employ 5 full time employees and you’ll often find family members around helping out. Never slowing down, new this year to the lineup are the beautiful SouthBay Pontoon Boats, and a spacious indoor showroom. When shopping customers can not only expect great value for their money, but also great selection, and incredible customer service. “It’s really simple, we treat everyone lots o with the respect and fairness that we would f selec expect when shopping” says Lawrence. The tion knowledgeable sales team will ensure your experience is relaxed and enjoyable. Call, click or stop by, their team is ready to put you into the car, rv or boat of your dreams!
