Concussion? Dizziness? Headaches?
Women’s Canoe added to Olympic Canoe Kayak program CANADA WIDE - Canoe Kayak Canada is pleased to share the news that for the first time in Tokyo 2020, Canoe Kayak Sprint and Slalom will have a gender-balanced Olympic program. The International Olympic Committee has approved the International Canoe Federation’s proposal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Program. This program includes women’s canoe events for the first time in Olympic history. “I think it is really a good day for women canoe,” Laurence Vincent-Lapointe said. Vincent-Lapointe has won seven world championships since women’s canoe was added to the world champion program in 2010, and has just finished a strong world cup performance where the sprint women’s canoe team won a total of 9 medals. “We finally get the opportunity to be seen as the athletes we are, and get the place we have been waiting for all this time” VincentLapointe said. “ Having just come back from the world cups tour, I have seen many incredible women canoers and I’m proud of what we have all accomplished until now. Now we will all be striving towards the highest form of recognition, the Olympic Games. It is with a lot of emotion that I received this news and I’m happy to share it with everyone who have supported us all this time.” Women canoers will compete at the Tokyo Olympics in Sprint C-1 200m and C-2 500m, as
well as in Slalom C-1. “I am proud to say that we will finally be able to follow our dreams to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020” Haley Daniels, Canada’s top Women’s Canoe Slalom paddler said. “This announcement is history in the making where we can truly say that Canoe Slalom is gender equitable and moving forward.” Women have a long history of racing canoes of many types in Canada. Races between women’s war canoes have been a regular fixture at championship regattas as early as the turn of the 20th century. Yet the road to equal competitive opportunity in the sport has not been short or easy for women’s canoe athletes. Through years of advocacy, and sometimes disappointing setbacks, pioneering athletes and leaders within the Canoe Kayak Canada community have led the way in the push for equality in the sport. Canadian marathon nationals were gender equitable across all events from their inception in 1980. The sprint discipline followed by adopting a full women’s canoe race card in 1995, and finally 2009 saw the inclusion of women’s canoe at the whitewater nationals. Canoe Kayak Canada led a concerted and sustained push through our representatives at the International Canoe Federation level for gender equity, specifically through the inclusion of women’s canoe events. “It has taken 72 years for women to be included as full participants in our sport,”

Laurence Vincent-Lapointe - 2017 Madeleine Hall, chair of Canoe Kayak Canada’s Sprint Racing Council, said. “Kudos to the International Canoe Federation and the International Olympic Committee for taking this significant step.” Hall, who was a canoe athlete herself, shared on behalf of Canoe Kayak Canada, a special thank you to our Canadian women
canoers who have led the way nationally and internationally. “You put your hearts and souls into canoeing in spite of its absence at the Olympic Games,” she said. “It is thanks to your skill and excellent performances that this dream has come true. Now enjoy the rest of the road to the Olympic Games!”

Wreck MMA came to Cornwall, and for the second time, brought out droves of people. (Alycia Douglass/TC Media) walked away with the first home win of the evening by unanimous decision. Travis Nutbrown was the second local on the card, fighting Big Country’s Tyler Telford. Nutbrown came at his opponent with a series of blows, and a deadly combo in the final round, earning him the unanimous decision of 29-28 on all three scoring cards. Cornwall’s Garret Dagenais came out strong, but so did his opponent, Tommy Yi, of Angry Monkey Gym. Delivering some wicked kicks, Yi was later pinned to the ground and tapped out 1:56 into the second round. In the 166-pound fight, SAMA’s Matt Therrien battled Jamie Naddiwan of Fear the Fighter Gym. After pinning Naddiwan and delivering a continuous stream of blows, Therrien won the round by referee stoppage just short of a minute into the round. Climbing the cage in celebration, Therrien’s victory delighted crowds, offering one of the most intense bouts of the evening. In the last non-title fight, SAMA’s Joel Brazeau took on Dawg Jiu Jitsu’s Matt Sheppard. With an impressively active first round, Brazeau took the 135-pound bout, choking out his opponent 2:55 into the first round.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Just two short months after his hometown debut, lightning struck again in Cornwall, with Tony Luis facing off against long time rival, Cam O’Connell this Saturday, June 17. Making good on their promise to offer more live professional boxing to Cornwall, Liveco Boxing delivered a great card to the the Civic Complex. After 10 arduous rounds, Tony won by unanimous decision, walking away with the NABA Lightweight Championship. Tony said his game plan was just to keep it simple. “Just box, be smart, use my speed, and be patient,” said Tony. With O’Connell throwing some shade at the community in a recent podcast, this fight was personal for Luis. Luis family patriarch and coach, Jorge Luis says that O’Connell went too far. “Building up the game and doing a certain amount of trash talking is one thing,” said Jorge. “But insulting a whole community crosses the line.” Throughout the fight, Tony struggled with O’Connell’s unsportsmanlike conduct. “He was coming in with his head a lot - the ref missed that all night,” said Luis, following the fight. Encouraging Tony to ‘be the boss,’ and chastise his opponent, Jorge said he didn’t want
O’Connell to gain any confidence during the fight. “On the outside, it went exactly as planned,” said Jorge. Despite a few nasty kidney shots and head butts, Jorge said that Tony ‘dominated with the jabs.’ “It was a sweet victory,” said Jorge. “But he biggest victory was being here and giving this to Cornwall, because we couldn’t have done it without the city’s support.” Also on the card for the evening was Daniel ‘El Pantera’ Andujo, beating Ramon Parro by knockout in the third round, moving up to 5-2. Next was super welterweight, Michael Brandon, taking on Rene Fernandez. Brandon dominated, cutting the scheduled six rounds short by four, bringing him up to 6-0. Middleweight, Ronnie Robidoux was next to step into the ring, facing off against Ivan Kanach. Coming out swinging, the Rocket delivered some healthy blows to his opponent. Winning by unanimous decision, judges scored the fight 40-36, with Robidoux now sitting at 4-0. Lightweight “Ill” Will Madera was next to step into the ring, fighting Rolando Mendivil in a scheduled six-round bout. Winning by technical knockout in the fourth round, Madera saw his record rise to 10-0. Light Heavyweight ‘The Irish’ Cronin faced off against Louisbert Altidor, who gave him a run for his money. With some visible bloodshed on Cronin’s part, the crowd was not impressed by his split-decision win, elevating him to 10-1-1.
CORNWALL, Ontario - It was one for the books as Wreck MMA returned to Cornwall this Saturday, June 4 after last year’s tremendously successful event. With a full house and 10 fighters on the card for the evening, the energy inside the Nav Centre was palpable. Headlining the fight was Cornwall’s Deven McIntyre against independent fighter, Adam Gladue for the title of Wreck MMA Amateur Fighting Championship Featherweight. After taking a few good kicks, McIntyre kicked it into high-gear, pinning Gladue to the ground and delivering a ferocious series of punches. With countless hours of training having gone into his hometown win, McIntyre says that ‘it’s still surreal.’ “This has been a long camp, it’s been a hard camp,” said McIntyre. “I’ve worked with some amazing trainers along the way. I’m thankful it’s because of them that I’m becoming better every day.” Having worked alongside Quest Personal Training’s Thomas Irvine; also McIntyre’s first sponsor - he says that his structured workouts really helped push him to his limits. “He’s been a great support,” said McIntyre. “I’ve worked with him in the past, but he really took it to a different level with me this time.” “I still can’t believe I got this thing. There’s been a lot of hard work to get here,” said McIntyre. “I work full-time, train twice a day, I’m doing MMA every single day of the week. It’s not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of sacrifice in my personal life, but it’s what I love to do.” Opening the main card was Seaway Academy of Martial Arts’ (SAMA) Pat St-Pierre vs. Big Country MMA’s Rob Davidson. The fight went on for the full three rounds, and after a relentless battle in the red corner, St-Pierre

CMC Kids Day 2017
4 of 8 - Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - Seaway News—8 Page Wrap - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
Handout from CMC CORNWALL, Ontario - All youngsters come away winners during the Cornwall Multisport Club Kids’ Day. From tiny tykes ages 6 and under, through to 16-year-olds, this year’s popular event will be held Saturday, July 8 at Lamoureux Park and is free to everyone in the community. “We really want to encourage parents to bring their youngsters down to the park for it,” encouraged Jim Peace, co-race director. “The event is meant to encourage kids’ to become physically active, but it also promotes important qualities like good sportsmanship and fair play. “Plus, it’s tons of fun, too.” The CMC club has organized the event for several years, and members eagerly look forward to it every summer. It is a kid-friendly morning that is specifically designed to encourage participation in a positive, non-competitive atmosphere geared towards all levels of physical ability. Rafeek Mohamed, who is co-leading the event with Peace, spoke about the inclusiveness of it. “For instance, not only do we have awards for each age group, but every participant who crosses the finish line receives a finishers’ medal,” Mohamed added. “They take such pride in this, it’s a real sense of accomplishment for them, and they’ll end up wearing it the whole day. “It’s great to see them running across the finish line with big smiles on their faces.”

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Kicks for a Cause is returning for a second year. This year the soccer torunament will be held in Rozon Park in Williamstown on Saturday, June 24 and the cause this year will be Beyond 21. Last year, the event raised $900 and organizer Colton Gallant is hoping to raise more this time around. Teams are encouraged to sign-up at the Kicks for a Cause Facebook page.
Teams must be co-ed and have a minimum of five players. The cost to sign-up is $20 per player. Gallant has said that the Township of South Glengarry is helping him with the cost of renting the fields and getting some soccer nets. Colton explained why he was interested in supporting Beyond 21 with the soccer tournamnet this year. “I got to learn about Beyond 21 and it stuck with me and I wanted to help out,” he said. “I like helping local causes and thought that Beyond 21 was fitting.”

Irwin Sports celebrates 80 years of service Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Tom Irwin and Leslie Irwin
royal Hall of famers CLAUDE McINTOSH - Three players who wore the Cornwall Royals’ uniform over the years are members of the Hockey Hockey of Fame. They are Billy Smith, Dale Hawerchuk and Doug Gilmour. There could have been a fourth. Back in 1968 a lanky 17-year-old was invited to training camp. The Royals, with three consecutive Central Junior Hockey League championships, felt they had outgrown the league. They moved up the junior hockey ladder to the Montreal Metro Junior Hockey League. The 6-foot-3 defenceman didn’t look out of place in the first two days of training camp. But there was something general manager Norm Baril and his sidekick Larry “Red” Lascelle didn’t like about him. His hair was too long. Baril and Lascelle decided to remedy the “problem”. A barber was brought to the Water Street Arena and the young prospect was taken to the dressing room for a “trim” which rendered
the teen-ager nearly bald. Years later, in his autobiography, the player recalled the haircut episode. “I was almost bald when I emerged (from the dressing room) and I was doing a slow burn. The more I thought about it, the hotter I became. I eventually just walked away from Cornwall, vowing never to play for those idiots.” He ended up in Brockville and played the 1968-69 season with the Braves. The next year he was signed by the Kitchener Rangers where he became one the top defencemen in the Ontario Hockey League. So good that the Montreal Canadiens made him their secondround draft pick, 20th overall in the 1971 draft. This was the year the Habs had three first-round picks. They took Guy Lafleur first overall, Chuck Arnason seventh and Murray Wilson 11th. Montreal also had three picks in the second round. Of the six players Montreal drafted in the first two round, only Lafleur, Wilson and Robinson played more than a handful of games
with the Habs. He played 20 seasons in the NHL. He won the Norris Trophy (outstanding defenceman) twice and the Conn Smythe prize as best playoff performer once. He played on six Stanley Cup winning teams, all with Montreal. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995. The Canadiens retired his number in 2007. Last year he was named one of the 100 greatest players of all-time. Perhaps you have heard of him? A guy called Larry Robinson. Pity the Royals didn’t like his long hair. TICK OF THE SPORTS CLOCK CIRCA 1968 The Cornwall/St. Regis junior all-stars took on the best team in all of junior lacrosse in an exhibition game at the Water Street this week in 1968 and didn’t fair too badly. They lost 19-11 to the Oshawa Green Gaels of the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League. Mike Henri and Bill McCrimmon scored three apiece for the allstars. John MacDonald, two, Rick Robillard, Jack
Joncas and Charlie O’Brien also scored. Former Cornwall Wildcats star Chuck Li had one for Oshawa. ... In a North End Fastball League game at King George Park, Domtar pitcher Neil Gallinger’s rbi single in the bottom of the seventh gave his club a 2-1 win over Massena. Gallinger had 16 strikeouts and held Massena to four base hits. ... Cornwall’s Pierre Guindon, a first-round Canadian Football League draft pick, was expected to crack the Winnipeg Blue Bombers lineup. He played at University of Ottawa and Classical College in Cornwall. ... Two local players were among the 20 left at the Ottawa Rough Riders high school camp. They were fullback Glen Hooker of Cornwall and halfback Don Blaney of Maxville. The camp started with 90 prospects. ... In an interview with the Standard-Freeholder, Hockey Hall of Famer Cy Denneny called Maurice “Rocket” Richard the greatest player of all-time with Gordie Howe a close second. ... Goaltender Jacques Plante signed with the St. Louis Blues.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Back in 1937, Tom Irwin’s grandfather founded Irwin Sports in Cornwall. An Irish immigrant who raced motorcycles back in his home country, his business would eventually pass to his son and then his grandson, but Irwin Sports has always been guided by the same dedication and love to motor vehicle sporting. “We participate in every product we sell,” said Tom Irwin when asked what made his business unique. “We don’t sell a product we don’t believe in.” Each Irwin that has run the business has been an avid racer. Tom’s father used to race street bikes and Tom himself has been racing off-road bikes for 44 years. Irwin Sports is also active in promoting outdoor sports culture and hold annual demo days.
The last demo day they held was on May 27, which also served as the day they celebrated their 80th anniversary. The next demo day will be in late September or early October. “We’ve always tried to be the leading dealership in Eastern Ontario,” said Tom. “We’ve always thought if you’re going to get something out of this industry, you need to put something into it.” Irwin Sports is the oldest store of its kind in Eastern Ontario and second oldest in the province as a whole. Irwin Sports has factory trained technicians and are rated as a five-star dealer. They are ranked as number three in Ontario for Yamaha customer satisfaction and have been in the top ten for the past 15 plus years. “We want to give a huge thanks to our customers and community for all of the years of support,” said Leslie Irwin.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The 21st annual Heart and Stroke Golf Tournament will be teeing off on Friday, July 28 at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. The Heart and Stroke Foundation expect to have 30 foursomes out on the green that day. It is $500 for a foursome to sign-up and $125 for an individual. The Foundation is hoping to raise about $10, 000 for their programs through this important fundraiser. “This event really ties our community together,” said Ashley Manwell, one of the
tournament organizers. “Its a great way heart and stroke can use the support of the community.” There will be a silent auction along with prizes for things like the Longest Drive and the male and female putting competitions. Manwell says she hopes they can give a prize to each foursome. At some holes, there will also be educational quizes on the importance of heart health and on learning the signs of heart attack or stroke. “Its a way to get them thinking about their own health,” said Manwell. At one whole, there will also be a blood pressure test.
