and with Petro nailing the convert, the Vikings were back in the game, down 12-10. Georgian countered with an attack that lead to a Grizzlies try and convert to take a 19-10 lead, but SLC wasn’t about to let the game slip away as another veteran, Harry Tibbs, found the try area for five points and with Petro kicking the
convert, the Vikings still found themselves down but not out. With the score 19-17 and the game still up for grabs, the Vikings would continue to push to retake the lead, but a late Georgian try and convert put the game to bed, resulting in the 26-17 final score.

The St. Lawrence College men’s rugby team played a hard 80-minute game against the Georgian College Grizzlies in the OCAA semifinal game, but a late Georgian try and covert proved to be the dagger, giving the Grizzlies the 27-17 victory and advancing them to the OCAA Gold Medal game. The season isn’t over for the Vikings, as SLC will take on the loser in the other semi-final between Conestoga and Fleming College in a battle for OCAA Bronze. This is the first time the Vikings have been in contention for a medal since the program won Gold back in the 2008-09 season. The Vikings opened the scoring, thanks to Mark Petro kicking a successful penalty kick, putting SLC up 3-0. It didn’t take long for the first place team from the OCAA West Division to respond, as the Grizzlies scored back-to-back tries and kicked one covert to take a 12-3 lead at halftime. The SLC veteran, Nick Taylor would score a crucial try in the early minutes of the second half

confidence boosting drives that went unrewarded. Fleming kept the pressure coming, scoring two more tries before halftime to take a 24-0 lead. Pasic encouraged her players that there was plenty of time to pick away at the score but needed a solid start to the second half to set the tone. The Vikings got the ball deep into Fleming’s end but once again, the Knights were able to strip the ball and score a gritty try just four minutes into the final half. With Fleming in full control, the Vikings were able to showcase themselves in the final ten
minutes with a gutsy finish that saw Amanda Blair breaking the Knights shutout with a penalty kick, followed by Samantha Gourdier going nearly the full the length of the field for the try, followed by Blair kicking the convert. That would be as close as the Vikings would get as Fleming would go on to win the OCAA Gold medal by a score of 41-10. “I proud of the way we finished the season. Our rookies played hard with the returning players, giving our graduating players a solid chance at OCAA Gold this season. Myself and the other coaches are fortunate to have this special group of players this season” said Pasic.

can hope for from your team.” The Knights scored first by getting the ball to the winger on the outside who was able to push the ball through the Vikings defenders. Fleming missed the convert, taking a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. SLC would march the field on a great drive but couldn’t capitalize as Fleming would force the first of many Vikings turnovers in the game. With the ball deep in the Vikings end, the Knights would capitalize on an attempted clear by SLC, scoring a try and covert. Now down 12-0, the Vikings still looked to be in the game as the players made a number of big tackles and

In the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Gold medal women’s rugby match, the Vikings fell behind early against a talented team from Fleming College and despite a strong finish from SLC, the Fleming Knights were able to come away with the 41-10 victory, capturing the OCAA Gold medal. “I’m really proud of our effort not from just today, but the entire season” said head coach, Kait Pasic. “The girls made this program not just another varsity team. They treated each other like family, playing their hearts out for a full 80 minutes every game. As a coach, that’s all you

Luis breaks through in tough battle important step for him. He recently signed with a new promoter this past week who booked this fight for him. “They got me in the ring and it helped me shake off some ring rust,” he said. Luis said that going forward he would be heading back to the gym and getting back to basics. In the New Year he hopes to win more fights on the West Coast, where his new promoter is based.

Cornwall’s Tony Luis has won his fight against Christian Urusquieta. The bought took place on Saturday night in Mississauga and was decided in favour of Luis in an eight round decision. Luis’ record now rises to 22-3, but he said that he knew going in, that this would be a tough fight. His opponent, Urusquieta, had taken few
losses over the past five years and was on a 10 fight winning streak. “I was faster and a little stronger,” said Luis. “I was never able to relax in there with him though, he was very durable.” Luis said that afterwards in the dressing room that he could tell that the fight took its toll. “He (Urusquieta) was complaining of headaches and vomiting in the dressing room,” said Luis. “In the ring he had a good poker face.” Luis said that getting back in the ring was an

Hectic week for Cornwall Nationals
CORNWALL, Ontario - A hectic weekend for the Nationals was also a productive one, as Cornwall picked up two victories in three games. The Nationals defeated the Watertown Wolves 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Civic Complex in front of 620 fans. Maxime Guyon, playing in his first game for Cornwall, led the way offensively with three goals and an assist. John Schiavo opened the scoring for the Wolves with 3:59 to play in the opening period, beating Nicolas Delongchamps with a nifty wrist shot. But, the Nationals leveled the score with a buzzer beater at the end of the first as Joel Trottier squeaked a shot past Ed Zdolshek with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. Tristan Elie one-timed a perfect feed from Guyon
to the back of the net at 3:39 of the middle frame before Lou Dickenson added a shorthanded marker at 5:13 to open up a two-goal lead for Cornwall. The Nationals took a 4-1 lead as Guyon tapped in a feed from Sylvester Bzdyl for a powerplay marker at 8:45 of the second. Trottier then beat Zdolshek through the legs with 6:43 to play in the second. Jeremy Akeson’s shot from the point beat Delongchamps with exactly two minutes to play in the second. Guyon batted the puck out of the air and past Zdolshek for his second of the game 65 seconds into the third and he then buried his third of the contest on a pretty feed from Elie at 12:27 of the third. Anthony Mezzagno took off on a breakaway and
undressed Denis Tasaruk, in to replace Zdolshek midway through the third period, with 4:50 to play. Jesse Facchini scored two late third-period goals to round out the scoring. Cornwall outshot Watertown 38-35. Guyon (first), Jason Dolgy (second) and Mezzagno were the announced stars. PROWLERS EDGE NATS: On Saturday night at Port Huron, Myles McCauley had a hat trick to lead the Prowlers to a 6-4 win over the Nationals. Marley Keca, Anthony Mezzagno, Lou Dickenson and MJ Graham had the Cornwall goals. Jason Dolgy and Bzdyl had a pair of assists each. Brandon Billie was tagged with the loss in goal for the Nationals. GERVAIS SOLID IN WIN: On Friday night in
Watertown, Dickenson had a four-point night to lead the Nationals to a 6-4 win over the Wolves. Olivier Gervais was outstanding in goal for Cornwall with a 52-save performance. Dolgy had two goals and assist for the Nationals. Mezzagno and Graham also scored for the Cornwall, while Bzdyl chipped in three assists. UP NEXT FOR NATS: It’s a lighter schedule for the Nationals next weekend with a pair of road contests. Cornwall travels to Danbury to take on the Titans on Friday, Nov. 25 (7:15 p.m.) and the next night, the Nationals are in Berlin to face the River Drivers (7 p.m.). Cornwall has a pair of home games the following weekend. The Nationals host Berlin on Saturday, Dec. 3 and Port Huron on Sunday, Dec. 4.
