Merry Christmas to everyone of Cornwall & SD&G
CORNWALL, Ontario - On Monday, Dec. 5 Cornwall’s Ed Lumley Arena was announced as the host of the 20th annual Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects game. The game will be taking place on January 25 and will feature 40 of the top NHL Draft eligible players from across the entire 10-league CJHL. “The CJHL Prospects Game brings together the top draft eligible Junior ‘A’ prospects from throughout Canada for on and off-ice testing and an East versus West game,” stated NHL Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr. The rosters will be divided, with 20 coming from
the CJHL’s eastern based leagues and 20 coming from the western ones. The host committee is being headed up by Shawna Mecteau and David Murphy. “We are both honoured and excited to be hosting the Prospects Game and we look forward to creating a dynamic event for the CJHL players being recognized and to continue the proud tradition of Cornwall as a welcoming host City,” said Mecteau. Tickets for the CJHL Prospects Game are now on sale and are available via the Cornwall Colts (CCHL) office by contacting them at (613) 930-9300. The cost for tickets is $10 each; $9 per-person for groups of 20 or more, while children 12 and under are $5.
When Gord Wood held his breath breath. The three-time Memorial Cup champion Royals were two picks - sixth overall - from landing one of junior hockey’s most prized prospects and giving the Royals a lethal one-two scoring punch.

- as their one-two punch in the 1982-83 season. Belleville’s gamble wrecked Wood’s plan for the draft. Instead of drafting the best junior prospect, the team made defenceman Dave Sikorski its number one pick. At best, Sikorski was a mediocre prospect who probably would have been available in the 12th round. Available for the Royals were Dan Gratton, Jeff Beukeboom, Bruce Cassidy and Todd Gill, all taken after Sikorski. In his bid to land LaFontaine, Wood had boxed himself into a corner.

The healthiest alcohols for the holidays JASON CHRISTOFF Sometimes people are curious about what the healthiest alcohols are to consume during holiday celebrations. If someone is standing at a bar, what choices are best? First avoid drinking on an empty stomach. There are negative effects on the body when alcohol is consumed and those negative effects are maximized if the alcohol sits in an empty stomach. Smaller quantities of meat, nuts, cheeses, olive oil, vegetables, wild rice etc and other fat/protein/fiber choices work best to tame alcohols’ negative effects. Avoid drinks with pop or juice mixes. The juice and pop
maximizes various disease causing changes in the body. Darker alcohols like rye, dark rum and whisky are more unhealthy compared to clear alcohols like vodka, gin and white rum. Vodka and Perrier (with real lemon) is a healthier choice for example. Don’t consume alcohol within 24 hour of taking any pain killer, as that can cause extreme liver damage. Drink responsibly. Have a safe and happy holiday.

This image should bring back memories of great times at the rink for some of our readers. The Cornwall Royals left a big mark on the Canadian junior hockey landscape, ultimately winning the Memorial Cup – junior hockey’s greatest prize – on three separate occasions, in 1972, 1980 and 1981. This 1960s era Royals jersey was worn by player George Rodney, who currently resides in Ottawa. The jersey is housed in the Royals Gallery in the main concourse of the Civic Complex.
Future National Hockey League hall-of-famer Pat LaFontaine had been passed over by the three clubs selecting in front of Belleville. The Brantford Alexanders, picking fifth, said they would not take a gamble on LaFontaine. Brantford instead wanted a sure bet, left winger Jeff Jackson. Only Belleville was standing in the way. LaFontaine had announced that he would not play in the OHL unless it was with the Royals. Belleville, foolishly, called his bluff. LaFontaine wasn’t bluffing. The player and his parents would not even talk to the Bulls. Instead of joining the Bulls, he exercised his right as an American prospect to sign with any major junior team. He was born in St. Louis and raised in Detroit where his father was a Chrysler executive. Three days later he signed with Verdun Canadiens of the Quebec Junior Hockey League. The Quebec league couldn’t believe its bonne fortune. It now had LaFontaine and Mario Lemieux, two of the hottest pro prospects in the world. It should have sent Belleville Bulls a thank-you card. In his first and only season with Verdun, LaFontaine scored 104 goals and added 130 assists for a league-leading 234 points. He won just about every award available, including Canadian Hockey League player of the year. His 234 points were 50 more than runner-up Mario Lemieux, a second-year player with Laval. If the stars had aligned for Woods, the Royals would have had centres LaFontaine and Doug Gilmour - who piled up 70 goals and 107 assists

Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media The Seaway Valley Rapids PeeWee B team took to the ice to take on the Akwesasne Wolves on the evening of Friday, December 16 at Cornwall’s Benson Arena, ending the game with a 1-1 tie. It was a hard fought matchup, and both teams put in a lot of effort. But, Seaway’s, goalie Eli Seguin, now on his second year with the team, proved he’s at home in front of the net. “He’s just a wonderful goalie, I think he’s one of the top in the league. He always works hard and he plays very well,” said coach Miguel
Delisle. Coach, Delisle was also impressed with his team’s overall performance. “This season is going pretty good, we’re playing well as a team,” said Delisle. “The kids are working hard, and we’re definitely having fun that’s for sure.” Tonight, the Rapids will be joining most of Cornwall’s hockey fans at the Benson arena for the World Junior’s game. “We’re going tonight as a team, it’s going to be fun to watch that level of hockey.”

TRENTON, Ontario - In the sport of Olympic style weightlifting the term ‘six for six’ refers to a lifter being successful on all six of their attempts. At the recent Bayside Holiday open, the Cornwall Weightlifting Club went six for six, with all six of their athletes successfully winning medals. Barrett Walker was the -77kg junior champion. The 16 year old snatched a personal best 55kg and clean and jerked 75kg for a 130kg total. Meagan Ellis had a great day at her first ever competition, making all of her attempts and setting personal records all around. She snatched 36kg and clean and jerked 49kg, producing an 85kg total which was good for the bronze medal in the women’s -75kg class. Her teammate, Chantal Crowl grabbed the silver medal in the same category. She also made all of her attempts and had best lifts of 58kg and
72kg for a 130kg total. Kevin Hartwick was back with CWC from his job in Alberta and did not disappoint, taking the gold medal in the men’s -85kg class. He had a best snatch of 118kg and clean and jerk of 141kg to produce a 259kg total. CWC had both Thorin Gault (-94kg) and Mark Sicard (+105kg) lifting in the final men’s session and both earned silver medals in their respective categories. Gault battled an early shoulder injury to snatch 108kg and clean and jerk 134kg for a 242kg total. Sicard snatched 117kg and clean and jerked 145kg before narrowly missing a massive 160kg attempt, ending with a 262kg total. Next up for the club will be Abby Jurchuk lifting at the Junior Nationals in Montreal in January.
