Grant to be on the ballot in October

Glen Grant, elected by his colleagues to succeed Bernadette Clement after she was named to the Canadian Senate, will be on the mayoral ballot for the October municipal election. “I have submitted my nomination papers, confirming my MAYOR GRANT decision to seek a four-year mayoral mandate,” said Grant. Grant had indicated he planned to retire from politics when the current term of council concluded but, after much thought and consideration, he has decided to seek a four-year term as Mayor. “My decision to run in October comes after spending 11 months as Mayor and realizing the need for a firm and experienced hand on the reins of the office. There are also some very exciting projects on the go in Cornwall that I would like to see to successful completion,” he said Grant said his time in the Mayor’s office has given him much insight into the demands of the position. “It is not a part-time job,” he said. He said the support of his family played a big role in his decision to run for mayor. Grant, who spent 14 years as a Councillor, said he now has an even better appreciation of the dedication of the Chief Administrative Officer, her senior management team and city employees. He paid tribute to his colleagues on Council for putting their faith in him and appreciates the support he has received from the community. “I have had a lot of positive feedback. I’m looking forward to that continued support in the October election,” he said.

Masks will remain in place at CCH

The United Way Centraide SDG launched a new video at its AGM on June 8, pushing the community to have an honest conversation about the realities of poverty across our region. This 12-minute video addresses misconceptions about poverty through the perspectives of three people with lived experience: a young man who fell into addiction and fought to get his life back on track, a single mom who suddenly had to raise her kids on an unstable single income due to unforeseen circumstances, and a young woman who struggled for years to get the help she needed, and once she did, she was finally able to thrive in a way she never knew was possible. The video, launched at the United Way SDG Annual General Meeting, was shared after it was announced that the organization invested more than one million dollars into the community last year which included the 16 agencies and 19 programs it

traditionally funds along with new programs such as the Last Report Fund, Food Hampers, and Hope Bags that were three programs developed with local agencies to address the immediate needs of individuals facing food insecurity and homelessness. “While we are extremely proud to have developed new partnerships and invested so much more into our community programs this past year, we can’t ignore the reason why these increases were needed. This past year highlighted the social inequities we always knew were present but were, for too long, hidden. We hope this video is the first step for all of us to start looking at poverty differently and breaking through the stereotypes to have an open and honest conversation. We want to work together with the community to ensure ours is one that everyone can thrive in.” Watch the video at: https://www.uwtalkspoverty.com/

On June 8, 2022, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health announced that provincial masking requirements in hospitals and other indoor settings will expire as of June 11. However, provincial guidance continues to recommend masking in acute care settings, and that organizations are encouraged to implement their own rules and policies related to masking. Therefore, at this time, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) will not be changing its masking policies and procedures, which apply to visitors, patients (as tolerated), and all staff and physicians. This approach is consistent with other hospitals across the province. This means even after June 11, anyone entering the hospital will still be required to wear a medical-grade mask. Medicalgrade masks are provided to anyone entering CCH. “As a hospital, we have a duty to care for and protect our patients, staff, and communities. We know masks are one of the most simple and effective tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a virus which could be devastating to our high-risk patients,” explains Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and Chief Executive Officer. “We understand that infection control measures, including masking requirements, may be frustrating, however we ask that individuals remain polite and respectful,” adds Despatie.

Education on intimate partner violence In the Know with SASS SEXUAL ASSAULT SUPPORT SERVICES

On Monday, June 6th, an inquest into the triple homicide that took place in Renfrew in 2015 began. This inquest is looking into the homicides of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk, and Nathalie Warmerdam. These women were murdered by Basil Borutski, a man known to them who had a history of domestic violence. The focus of this inquest is an exploration of the circumstances of these women’s deaths, with a focus on the

happens. At SASS, we actively educate in the schools to ensure that our youth have a thorough understanding of consent, healthy relationships, and warning signs of abusive relationships. The hope is that the more kids understand about consent, the better they will be able to hold their boundaries. We also hope that we can educate our youth to understand that it is not acceptable to push people’s boundaries or not get proper consent. Discussing boundaries, healthy relationships, and warning signs of abusive relationships also give our youth vital information that they need to make good decisions in relationships moving forward. Theodore TOO coming to the area MORRISBURG – The Municipality of South Dundas is excited to announce that Theodore TOO, the life-sized tugboat based on the animated television character Theodore Tugboat is coming to visit on July 3, 2022. Crowds flocked to the waterfront last summer to watch Theodore as he travelled from Halifax, NS to his new home in Hamilton, ON. After a year in the making, South Dundas is pleased to host the tugboat and crew for an interactive day at the Morrisburg Public Dock. The fully operational 65-foot tugboat will dock in Morrisburg, and visitors will be able to interact with the crew throughout the day

on July 3. “This is an amazing opportunity for South Dundas to host Theodore TOO and we are thrilled. The support we received from the Tourism Advisory Committee and at the Council table have helped bring this one-ofa-kind attraction to South Dundas,” said Rob Hunter, Economic Development Officer. “Our thanks go to our staff and the staff of Theodore TOO for organizing this event. These types of events work to put South Dundas on the map and bring visitors to South Dundas who get to experience all of the wonderful things it has to offer. It’s sure to be a great and busy day, we hope to see you there,” said Mayor Steven Byvelds.

youth know what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, they are more likely to gravitate toward healthy relationships, and leave unhealthy relationships. We also give youth the tools they need to end relationships that are not healthy, and where to find resources if they need help. dynamics of gender-based, intimate partner violence and femicide in r ural communities. According to peter Jaffe, a psychologist and former academic director of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children, told the inquest this week that there’s a clear need for more public education around Intimate Partner Violence in Ontario – specifically in our schools. This is a topic that is very important to SASS’s mission. We strive to ensure that we are educating the next generation in hopes that they can make positive change in the future. Dear Editor, The dangers of highway 138, the doctor shortage, our deteriorating service of Via rail, haven’t we been plunking on those same notes for years. On June 2nd the predictable voters corralled themselves once more into the Conservative pen. I myself hold NO allegiance to any political party and even less so to any POLITICIAN, but how hard would you really “work” if your boss didn’t care what you did. Seems to me the only asset you need in this area as MP is a giant pair of scissors to cut the red ribbon in front of a new store. My neighbour was the first to tell me that Quinn could not be bothered to show up at the candidates’ debate, and why would he. Mr. Quinn does not have to “Hit the ground running”, he can, at best, coast, he and his

colleague Eric Duncan, are what you call a sure thing. What would motivate our politicians to do anything IF they don’t have to worry come election time. The ease at which our sure things are elected could only manifest a false sense of entitlement, like a teenager getting an allowance even though he continues to do little around the house. Had Mr. Quinn come to my door (the only candidate to do so was Jacqueline Milner of the Green Party), I would of told him this- get yourself a couple of nice suits, a good pair of sensible shoes, maybe plan a few exotic trips, no need for expensive sunglasses though, cause Good Sir, you got it made in the shade. It’s time to say good bye and thank you for the many years (May 4, 1982 – May 31, 2022). I was given the privilege to serve the people of the City of Cornwall, both francophones and anglophones, the population of Cornwall Island, the residents of SDG and beyond. Thank you to Seaway News for graciously allowing me to express my deepest gratitude to the people who supported me for so many years. Among all, I also want to recognize Monsieur Pierre (comme il aimait se faire appeler), Pierre Landry, the Godfather du « Programme de Santé Mentale pour enfants et adolescents francophones » and its first Executive Director. He did a good job selling me his program and Cornwall. The proof is I am still here after 40 years, long past his retirement. He delivered on his promises; he gave us, my family and me, all the support we needed. He saw my children grow up and he participated in many events in our family life. When the torch was passed on to the 2nd Executive Director of l’Équipe psycho-sociale, Mrs. Denise Therriault, my association with l’Équipe psycho-sociale remained the same; nothing changed. Thank you Pierre and Denise, I will be forever grateful for 40 years of association and collaboration without a conflict. “Il faut le faire”. I can’t ignore and will not forget the various members of the Community who have served on the different CA “Conseil d’administration” (Board of Governors). They gave me their support from day 1 and that never wavered. During my 40 years, I have seen and had to collaborate with a great number of staff from various programs; psychologists, social workers,

in need of mental health services would have had a much harder time. All have been valuable partners in Mental Health. They all have played a significant role in improving the living condition, of so many mentally ill. Thank you! Without you, it would not have been possible to provide the services and the help so much needed. Thank you to all the colleagues who have trusted me, supported me and referred their patients to me. All my gratitude. Thank you to my colleague psychiatrists for their understanding, their collaboration and cooperation. Together it was much easier. I want to make a special mention of the “unsung heroes” that we find in Emergency rooms and the psychiatric unit. They are too often victims of verbal and emotional abuse, physical threats, if not physical aggression on occasion causing disabling injury. I commend them for their dedication and their attempt at times to protect me. Thank you all! I will not forget my colleagues in Cornwall who have taken care of me over the years starting with the late Dr. Corbeil and Dr. Taylor. It is often said that “Doctors make the worst patients”. I can testify to that with all the consequences of such bad behaviour. Since 2014, I have another medical team to which I am very grateful: Dr. Shah, Dr. Ghaly, Dr. Youssef and Dr. Gottlieb of the eye institute. Thank you to all of them. They are taking great care of me, despite my delinquent behaviour as a patient. I can’t forget my 2 pharmacists, Suzie (Medical Arts) and Paul (Jean Coutu). I want to thank them for their good service and their availability. I consider that I have been blessed to have

therapists, educators, teachers, play therapists, behaviour therapists, etc. To all, I say thank you for their past cooperation. I am also grateful to the 2 hospitals of that time, the General Hospital, site of the psychiatric program and the Hotel Dieu Hospital run by the Grey Sisters. I was granted privileges in both hospitals, and I worked at the CCH (Cornwall Community Hospital), which had become the amalgamated Hospital of Cornwall in 2013-2014. I left the hospital in 2016. I have also appreciated the collaboration and cooperation I received from the Glengarry Memorial Hospital and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital. I am thankful also to the Brockville Hospital, we developed over the years a protocol that facilitated the transfer of patients from either hospital and greatly improved services to the SDG residents. I will not go through the long list of all agencies, organisations, associations (professional and volunteer) that have offered us full collaboration and cooperation for many years. Remember that Mental Health is everybody’s business, involving all sectors of our community. I have to mention our close collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) the Cornwall Community Police, The Social Services, the Schools, the legal system, the enterprises, the correctional services. The Children’s Aid Society, Developmental Service, Dual-Diagnosis programs, Community Living, all the long-term care facilities (Nursing homes, the different residences (Riverview, Royal, Marlborough Place, Parisien Manor, Primrose Manor, Long Sault Manor, former Lisieux Manor, etc. Without all of them, those

been able to work for so many years (40) in Cornwall and SDG. I came to Cornwall by choice, and I remained by choice, not because I couldn’t make it elsewhere. I hope that I have been able to contribute something to the life of some of the many people I have seen. I am sorry and I apologize to those I have not been able to help. I hope that I have not caused them any harm. The old Hippocratic Oath “Primum, non nocere”. First do no harm. Finally, I wish to thank all patients, staff, co-workers, collaborators, etc. for what you have contributed to my becoming, to get to know myself better and acquire a bit of wisdom. One more time, to my secretarial staff, throughout the last few years, they had become “my eyes” and also my “watch dog”; making sure that I take a lunch break that I didn’t always use, making sure that I eat something, to the point of bringing me some food. To all, I wish that you continue to take charge of your life. Every so often, check how you are treating your life. Continue your journey, make sure that you know your destination and take the right direction making “one small giant step one after the other”. Remember, if you don’t start, you will never finish. Respect and appreciation, thanks and gratitude. Claude C. Manigat, Psychiatrist (Retired)

Mayor makes (an honest) mistake Mayor Glen Grant stepped in it recently and we understand why. We asked Grant to provide us with a media release outlining his election campaign for mayor. Grant, you’ll recall, was appointed as mayor following the resignation of now Sen. Bernadette Clement. Grant had initially suggested he would not seek election in the future as mayor of Cornwall, but has since changed his mind. We reached out on that basis. The problem for the mayor, is he issued the media release via his City of Cornwall email account and computer. His email included the city’s logo and other municipal hyperlinks. That is a no-no according to the Municipal Elections Act, which forbids such an action during a campaign. Grant should have sent the material from a personal or campaign email account and should not have included the city’s logo and other municipal materials. This was pointed out last week via a report from Cornwall Newswatch. The online media outlet quoted Grant as being unaware that he had contravened the rules. We believe Grant - this was an oversight.

LEROUX WHO? His name is James Leroux, and he is the third candidate running for mayor in Cornwall. Leroux has wasted little time in jumping into the campaign. Leroux, a small business owner in Cornwall, has been spotted at a number of locations in the Seaway City, including grocery stores, handing out his campaign business cards and chatting up voters. While his chances of being elected appear slim at this early juncture, we have to tip our hat to Leroux for having the courage to put his name forward, and getting to work. All politics is local, and at the very least Leroux is trying to understand the electorate. TOWNDALE MEETS BENEDICT Mayoral candidate Justin Towndale held court with Akwesasne Grand Chief Abram Benedict last week. Towndale, also a city councillor, met with Benedict over breakfast at a downtown eatery. According to Towndale’s social media post highlighting the breakfast, the two chatted about how “Cornwall and Akwesasne can work together as partners, neighbours, and of course friends.”

You can bet they also talked about something else - The Portlands. The Portlands was formerly called the Cornwall Harbour, and it’s the sizeable chunk of prime waterfront real estate that the city, and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne jointly own and administer. It’s a huge file, and there must be agreement between both parties on any developments involving the land. It doesn’t take much of a leap to suggest that after all the pleasantries and positive talk about

working together as friends, the two men also discussed the status of things on the waterfront and the partnership between the city and Akwesasne. We’d like to believe that both parties are in agreement on every facet of the plans to administer the property - but that’s probably unlikely to be the case. If Towndale wins the mayoral race this fall, both he and Benedict are likely to have even more one-on-ones involving The Portlands.

Have you passed it forward lately?

DANCES WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

What’s the one thing more difficult to do than getting toothpaste back into the tube, or settling the differences between Israel and Palestinians, or solving the climate change conundrum? If your answer is installing new windshield wiper blades on a 1995 VW Eurovan, you’re right. That was the first of several delightful situations we were involved in last week during our 1,200 km road trip. Juliet and I were parked at Brockville’s Bockhouse Island (which hasn’t been an island since c.1850). We had tried every permutation and combination of installing the new wiper blade before the rumbling black clouds unleashed a torrent. Along came a young man with his wife and toddler. “Need some help?” With the dexterity of a pickpocket and a magician, with an instantaneous click, click, he snapped it into place. Then came the rain. Later, as Juliet struggled to descend out of

the van outside a grocery store, a lady almost as old as her said, “At our age, it’s difficult, isn’t it? Need a hand?” That gesture made me realize it was time for me to ‘pay it forward’. By the time Juliet was back with the bananas, oranges and salad makings, I’d been able to help two women load their groceries into their cars, and return five carts to their corral. Then, at Johnstown Harbour, the sight of CSL’s bulk carrier Whitefish Bay enticed us to pull over to take a photo of the enormous mountain of road salt it had unloaded. There, inside the confines of the high security gate was a solitary figure, one of the crew, being drenched by a downpour. “What you doing out here?” “I’m trying to go to the Giant Tiger over there to get some sodas and snacks, but I can’t get out. Someone was supposed to come to open the gate, but they’re a no-show.” Once again, it was time for us to pay it forward: Juliet explored the several port buildings. Unlocked door; lights on; a radio blaring, discarded safety gear – but nobody there! It was as if The Rapture (Matthew 24:37–40) had taken place. Eventually, a service vehicle arrived and released the would-be shopper. “The Giant

WHERE THERE’S A GAP, THERE’S A WAY – Shopping done, it was time to find a way to get back to his ship. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) Tiger you can see is their mega distribution centre, not a retail outlet. We’ll take you into town to do your shopping.” His errands done, we took him back to the fenced-in port. The photo shows what he had to do to get back to his ship. I then explained to my wife, “I’ll drop you off at Tim’s so you can use the washroom.” Unfortunately, it was the exit door. The entrance was at the far side of the building.

At once, a gentleman, noting the rain, left his place at the table and opened the door for her. I parked the van. Instantly, a teenager at another table gestured to me and opened the door for me. I told him, “Your mom and dad sure did a good job of bringing you up.” These incidents reminded me of the pleasure of passing it forward.

OPINION

The good old days Claude McIntosh

MAC’S MUSINGS

INFO@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

The other night while our group— coined Mutts of the Round Table by member in good standing Rick “Nash” Kalil—was enjoying a sumptuous Italian dinner at Billy Petepiece’s pad on Island 17, talk, as it always does, got around to the good old days, or as Brian “The Cat” Rouleau likes to say “Back in da day.” As the song goes, those were the days my friend. That got me thinking about the question presented by one of the rug rats few years back, “What’s a baby boomer?” Well, a baby boomer, or someone in the older division, remembers soft drink machines that dispensed glass bottles. Milk was delivered in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers. Kids “smoked” flavoured candy cigarettes. Two cents got you a wax Coke-shaped bottle filled with coloured water. We drank Kikk cola. Having to write out “I will not be bad in class” 100 times, standing in the corner for 20 minutes, receiving a detention or not being allowed out at recess was doing “easy time”. The real punishment was arriving home and learning your parent(s) received a call from the principal. That’s because, in almost every instance, parents sided with the teachers. It is why the pupil-teacher ratio wasn’t an issue. When a kid headed out in the morning on a non-school day and didn’t return for lunch, nobody considered organizing a search party. They were having too much fun over at the park. Everything

was okay as long as you were back when the street lights came on. The city had a curfew for kids under 16. A kid with a pocket knife didn’t cause a school lockdown. The “weapons” of choice were pea shooters and sling shots tucked in a back pocket. Friends weren’t collected by the dozen on Facebook. Friends were earned. Texting was slipping a classmate a note. We had party lines and telephone numbers with three digits. After 20 minutes, a mother would yell, “You’ve been on the phone long enough.” The Bell Telephone Co. was nicknamed Ma Bell. Clothes were washed on Mondays in a wringer washer—Beatty was the big seller – and hung to dry clothes on a clothes rack or clothes line. Thursday was grocery shopping day when the bread winner was paid by cheque. Families bought potatoes in 50-pound bags. Being old was anyone over 20. And the older we got, the smarter our parents got. THIS MONTH CIRCA 1958—one of Cornwall’s oldest family-owned and operated businesses was sold to two Cornwall businessmen. George Kaneb and Ralph Whitehead were the new owners of Beach Furniture, established at Sydney and Eighth streets in 1908 when C.A. Beach purchased Cornwall Furniture Co. At its peak, the company had 88 employees turning out bedroom and dining room furniture. … It’s not every day a prime minister shows up for a wading pool ribbon cutting, but Prime Minister John Diefenbaker cut the ribbon for the new Kinsmen wading pool at Memorial Park. …After several weeks of gingerly digging on Cameron’s Island

in the St. Lawrence River, a team led by Royal Ontario Museum archeologist Walter Kenyon uncovered three ancient native settlements. The dig recovered dozens of artifacts that included pottery, arrowheads, and flints. Kenyon believed the settlements were hundreds of years old. … Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 held the official opening of its new hall built at a cost of $90,000. …North End Fastball League pitcher Doug Taillon was in fine form as he hurled a three-hitter and slugged two home runs, as Brookshell Motors routed Hodgins 20-0. …Bob Turner, a former professional baseball player, was Cornwall’s new recreation director. The 31-year-old Turner, a graduate of New York University, was recreation director in Colbourne, Ont. for four years before landing the Cornwall job. He had a stint with the Chicago White Sox as a catcher, one year after Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier, and played in the Mexican and Pacific Coast leagues. 1958 PART TWO—A busy weekend for the Cornwall Police traffic department saw all three of Cornwall’s ambulance ser vices used. Exclusive Ambulance, Miller’s Funeral Home and Boulerice, and Payette Funeral Home ambulances transported injured persons to hospital. In one incident, a fouryear-old girl was transported to Montreal Neurological Hospital with head injuries. In the day, funeral homes provided ambulance services as a sideline. … Billed as Cornwall’s only dine and dance club, the Oasis (former The Wonderland) held its grand opening with the Jimmy Thompson Orchestra performing. The club was owned by Ed Andrews and Eric Richardson. … The new community of Long Sault had a new restaurant.

The Long Sault Restaurant in the shopping plaza was owned by John Touchette, Lionel Touchette, and Jimmie Hickman. They also owned the Long Sault IGA and Paul’s IGA at 854 First St. E. in Cornwall. … The Brunet brothers, Gerald, Arcade, and Agnos, opened the new Cardinal Motel at Highway 2 and Power Dam Drive. … Louis Emard Gas Bar on St. Andrew’s Road re-opened with gas selling for 38.9 cents a gallon. Montreal Road east of St. Felix Street had the heaviest peak-hour traffic with 1,323 vehicles. … CKSF on-air personalities included John Larocque, George Heath, George Williamson, Bill “Night Train” Gallant, Bill LaSalle, Don Passerby, and Hall Lee Jr. Heath later became the voice of the Cornwall Royals, calling the 1972 Memorial Cup victory. HERE AND THERE: The other day at the gas station a guy filling up his pickup truck yelled over to me, “Do you have a cell phone?” I said yes. He said “Will you call 9-1-1.” I yelled back, “What’s the problem?” Pointing to the pump, he said, “I want to report a robbery.” …A local conspiracy theorist claims Queen Elizabeth died just prior to the big anniversary celebration and news shots of her attending a couple of the events were faked. Hey, why spoil a good party. TRIVIA ANSWER: ESSO used the slogan “Put a Tiger in Your Tank”. TRIVIA: This event on July 1, 1958 in Cornwall attracted a crowd of 70,000 people and received national and international media coverage. QUOTED: “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.” – Winston Churchill.

My experience with BBBS

Carol-Ann Allen

BIGS Blog BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS

Eight years ago, my youngest child moved away to university. At the time, I was happy for him but it left a huge space in my life. My husband and I were used to going to his events and having him home. It was at this time that I started looking for something to do with my spare time. As an educator, it seemed like a natural fit to become a Big Sister. After contacting BBBS Cornwall and District and going through their application process, I took out a couple of children until I ended up taking Brigid out for supper at East Side Mario’s. She was 10 years old and we had a great time and decided to make the match official. The first part of the match is the get to know you phase. We spent a great deal of time doing a variety of activities including pottery painting, games night, making pasta, baking, going out for dinners and just hanging out. As we got to know each other, we found we enjoyed many of the same things but could still joke about things like which is better, books or the movies they are made into. For the record, I still say that books are the best! Over time, Brigid and I also began to spend time with my family and my daughter, Stephanie, in particular. Steph would join us on outings or take Brigid to activities I couldn’t make it to. We would have Brigid out to our house every year for our annual Christmas Cookie decorating, where she put us all to shame with her artistic abilities. Brigid was becoming an integral part of our family. Stephanie was in the concurrent education program at Nipissing University and needed to do an alternative placement. She was able to do her placement at Big Brothers Big Sisters Cornwall and that led to a fundraising coordinator position that she did for several months before taking the plunge into teaching full time. During this time, Brigid and I continued to see each other almost weekly. As she got older we tended to spend more and more time just hanging out, sharing a meal (usually at Boston Pizza) and just talking. When Stephanie was getting married in 2019, she asked Brigid to be a bridesmaid in her wedding party so we spent time wedding planning, and bachelorette partying, ending with the wedding in November. The pandemic brought its own challenges and Brigid and I didn’t see each other for several months but would occasionally text. As soon as we were able, we started having porch visits (with a DQ treat, of course) and have been able to go back to our weekly dinner meetings last year as things opened up. This year I saw an opening at BBBS for an in-school mentoring coordinator and, having retired recently from education, decided to apply. I started working here last September part time and have been enjoying the work, the staff, the families we serve, and the Bigs and Mentors we work with. Brigid turned 18 this year and is graduating high school at the end of the month. That will mean that our time as Big and Little at BBBS will come to an end; however, although we will officially be done with the agency, we will not be done with each other. I am excited to continue to be a part of her life and can’t wait to see where life takes her.

The important month of June Todd Lalonde

Education Matters

CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD OF EASTERN ONTARIO

June is a significant month, where the Board recognizes and honours many important observances. June is Pride Month, and CDSBEO is deeply committed to supporting the dignity, worth, and safety of our LGBTQ2S+ students, as evidenced by our board spiritual theme “I Belong Here – Together we are God’s good news!” In keeping with years past, CDSBEO will recognize Pride Month through various school initiatives which honour and recognize our LGBTQ2S+ students. These initiatives include honouring

significant leaders and events, holding awareness activities, offering professional development for staff, and prayerful support for all of our students who identify as LGBTQ2S+. June is also National Indigenous History Month. As part of National Indigenous History Month, the board will collectively reflect on and show gratitude for the teachings and support of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit community partners that guide the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario in our work. Resources have been distributed to our schools which bring focus to notable Indigenous historical figures. Additionally, and in honour of the Month of the Sacred Heart, CDSBEO

will recollect the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for all people. The CDSBEO will be praying a novena to the Sacred Heart every day starting June 15. As well, on June 24, for the Feast of the Sacred Heart, a boardwide virtual liturgy will be held for all staff and students. As we wrap up the school year, we continue to move forward as a Catholic community of hope and accompaniment. We have much to be grateful for. I want to conclude in saying thank you to all who work within education no matter the board you may be employed by. What you do is truly a blessing . For our students and their families across all boards. Enjoy a safe and healthy summer!

Cornwall Police Service goes hybrid

Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) has added three new hybrid vehicles to its fleet as a means of becoming a more environmentally conscious police service. Three 2021 Hybrid Ford Explorers have been added to the fleet, replacing older police vehicles that need to be cycled out of circulation. These new vehicles are identifiable with a “Hybrid” logo on the back gate of the vehicle. “The Cornwall Police Service recognizes the need to reduce our carbon footprint, while also being conscious of rising fuel costs and their budgetary impact,” said Staff Sergeant George Knezevic, Officer in Charge of Infrastructure Services. “This is a first step towards eventually transforming our remaining vehicle deployment to a fully-hybrid fleet.”

“We have a responsibility to be leaders in our community by making sure that we appropriately allocate our funds towards purchases that are sustainable and beneficial to the community we serve, while ultimately keeping officers and members of the public safe,” he added. Though light on fuel, these vehicles are just as powerful and effective as the gas-powered police vehicles. The Hybrid Ford Explorers are specifically built for police, offering heavy-duty suspension and brakes, as well as a more robust powertrain. The move towards hybrid vehicles aligns with the Cornwall Police Service’s strategic priority of organizational excellence through modernizing infrastructure, as we work towards our vision of “A Safer Cornwall.”

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and a time for all Canadians to honour and celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. The celebrations taking place across the country are varied. Some communities choose to mark the holiday with barbecues and dancing, others host large events with musical performances and activities for children. Additionally, some bands choose to hold powwows to commemorate the

For example, the AFN is currently involved in addressing the urgent issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada, advocating for compensation and support for survivors of residential schools, investigating instances where Canada has violated treaties with First Nations communities and campaigning for Indigenous language rights. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a national political organization that represents First Nation citizens in Canada. This includes more than 900,000 people living in 634 First Nations communities and cities and towns across the country. The organization was created in 1982 to serve as a nationwide assembly of chiefs who could serve as a collective voice for First Nations in Canada. The AFN is composed of First Nations chiefs from across the country who are elected to the assembly by their local communities. The organization is led by the National Chief, who is elected by the chiefs-in-assembly for a three-year term and an executive committee made up of 10 regionally elected chiefs. The current National Chief is Perry Bellegarde. The AFN also has three special councils that help shape its agenda: the Elders Council, the Women’s Council and the Youth Council. The chairs of these committees also sit on the AFN executive committee. The National Chief and executive committee work closely with the federal go-

No matter where you live in Canada, winter can be rough on your car, even if it was stored in a nice, dry place. Indeed, any vehicle that has been kept unused or, worse, one that has been run during the harshest season of the year needs to be carefully detailed before we hit the warm days of summer. Of course, each and every mechanical maintenance chore has to be done every spring, from the oil change to the tire - Air Conditioning inspection, and don’t forget the visual inspection for any loose - Exhausts or missing parts or burned lights. Cars and light trucks that were subjected to winter usage require even more attention. - Brakes They, too, need to see their drive train maintained, but more - Suspensions time must be spent cleaning and detailing the body. Even - Tires unseen parts of the car might be covered with salt, sand, and - Tune-ups road dirt that have accumulated in the undercarriage and the trims. Ron This kind of detailing requires a complete wash of the vehicle, starting with a going-over or two in a no-contact car wash (a 1520 Vincent Massey Dr.,Cornwall 613-932-3111

this year. Our event will be composed of 4 major components: an Heritage Fair, major entertainment shows inside the arena representing our 3 cultures, including a full Highland Military Tattoo in an arena like the one in Hamilton or Halifax using light and smoke special effects, the UELAC National Conference with lecture series in conferences room about Loyalist history by University professors and book authors as well as FrenchCanadian history, and Indigenous/Mohawk history such as the Great Law and Wampum from local elders and traditional Chiefs. We plan to invite the North American British Brigade (re-enactors) which is composed of about 400 muskets from various American and British units of the War of Independence 1775-1783. The Lamoureux Park would be divided into two parts from the RCAF Wing to the Civic Centre, to the north would be all military camps of approx. 250 tents and the south portion would be utilized for re-enacting the battles and maneuvers. If you interested in participating in organizing or volunteering for this event, please contact Jean-Yves Lemoine at the Cornwall Community Museum.

Nevertheless, such an operation always leaves behind a film of dirt or some light deposits behind the trim. That is where a manual wash comes in handy. Only the human eye can detect hidden dirt and give the vehicle the tender loving care it needs to stay nice and shiny for years. And only the human hand can give a car the super detailing touch it deserves for longer years of reliable use. Remember that next Saturday morning — if Mother Nature cooperates!

A Celebration of Friendship held in Lamoureux during the May long weekend was a first for Cornwall and a great success. The SD&G Historical Society (SDGHS) would like to express its gratitude to the Cornwall Tourism Development fund, Desjardins, Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario SDG (ACFO SDG), Cornwall Business Development, Rotary Club of Cornwall, Richelieu Cornwall, Ontario Power Generation, SD&G Counties, and the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada (UELAC) for their generous contributions in sponsoring this event. This event was only possible through the amazing partnership between the SD&G Historical Society, ACFO SDG, the Centre Charles-Émile Claude, the North Native American Travelling College (NNATC), the Glengarry Highland Games, the Canadian Regiment of Fencibles Infantry (re-enactors) and the Heritage-Patrimoine Cornwall. We would like to acknowledge and show our appreciation for the 200 performers and 100 volunteers that participated to make this event a great success. With the use of our drone, we estimated than over 3000 visitors attended the event over the 3-day period. Visitors enjoyed the entertainment and the Heritage Fair composed of 40 displays representing 27 organizations of our 3 cultures. The heritage and cultures of the Mohawks, French-Canadian and Loyalists were in full display through entertainment, interactions in the Heritage Fair or with the re-enactors in their encampment. We are hoping to make Cornwall 1784 a Marquee event for the City of Cornwall, Akwesasne, and the SD&G Counties. This event is about all of us because it celebrates the lives of the ancestors of our region as a whole. We are already planning the 2024 edition of the Cornwall 1784 event. In order to minimize the impact of the weather on the event, we are exploring the possibility to host it inside the Civic Complex. We will apply the same inclusion and diversity principles as of

Cornwall Fire Service donate suits

The Cornwall Fire Service recently donated more than 30 bunker suits to Firefighters Without Borders. These will be distributed to impoverished countries in the near future. According to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Stephenson, the decision to donate the bunker gear was an easy one. That’s because Ontario regulation dictates that bunker gear such as the one donated, only has a lifespan of 10 years.

“Instead of throwing it out, we’d much rather donate it to fire service departments in other countries who may need it,” he said. “The equipment is still fully functional. We’re just required to get rid of it.” The bunker gear was just a start however — the service will continue to look for opportunities to donate equipment to Firefighters Without Borders.

RRCA hosting Open House The Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) and its community partners are inviting the public to join them on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for an open house event celebrating the reopening of the Visitors Centre at Cooper Marsh Conservation Area in South Glengarry. “Visitors dropping in throughout the morning will be able to help build and install duck nesting boxes, participate in educational workshops, take in new taxidermy displays, learn about the many bird species found at the

Marsh, and discover how they can take part in the Cooper Marsh Biodiversity Project through citizen science biodiversity monitoring,” says RRCA Nature Interpreter, Ashley MacCrimmon. Visitors attending the open house on June 18 can also explore the Marsh’s 12-kilometre nature trail network, which includes boardwalks and viewing blinds and towers. Recently installed wayfinding signs and markers make it easy to navigate the trails. For more information, visit rrca.on.ca or contact (613) 938-3611 or info@rrca.on.ca.

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan will ring with the sound of hammers hitting anvils during its fifth-annual Smith-In Blacksmith Festival on Saturday and Sunday, 18-19 June 2022 from 10am-4pm.

Local blacksmith, Pat Taylor, working the forge in the Olivier Hamelin blacksmith shop. More than eighteen blacksmiths from across Ontario, Quebec, and the USA will come together to share their skills and products with patrons of the museum and fellow smiths. In the timber-framed Williams Pavilion, Smiths from across Ontario and Quebec will be demonstrating using a variety of portable forges. In the

blacksmith shop, visiting smiths will be demonstrating historical blacksmithing. In the past, they have forged reproduction gun barrels modelled closely on a musket discovered in nearby Apple Hill as well as a reproduction of a ship’s anchor. Get more info at www.glengarrypioneermuseum.ca

The Canadian 358-Modified Series postponed to 2023! Cornwall Motoro Speedway—After several discussions with race teams and promoters involved, it was decided to postpone the series that included 9 events to 2023. The uncertainty with the tire shortage for the upcoming months along with the gas prices that are continuing to rise at a record pace was the main part for promoter to

postpone to next year. The interest from race teams in following the whole series had also declined significantly in the last few weeks mainly due to gas prices. The promoters from all 9 tracks will reconvene in early Fall 2022 to build a schedule that will be solid and without any date conflict to maximize participation by all teams.

Renaissance Assoc. Meeting June 6, 2022—Mark MacDonald introduced special guests, mayoral candidate, Justin Towndale, and Jeff Weber, Fire Chief, and attendees and explained the origin of the association, its goals and challenges. Attendees included homeowners, condo owners, a landlord, new business owner and several Adopt-a-Street volunteers. An update was provided regarding the March 30 meeting with the city to discuss the PILOT PROJECT which would target substandard buildings in the district. The city has yet to respond to this request which is simply to assign a bylaw officer to work with our association for 6 months to deal with problematic properties that we identify. We have already presented a handful of cases and will provide the city with our assessment regarding its service delivery. Ray Carson spoke about Kingston and how this city has addressed its substandard properties through its STREETSCAPE PLAN that was launched in 2011. Its aim is to improve the look of the streetscape and to stop further deterioration of buildings on a given set of streets. Jeff outlined his plans to raise awareness about the value of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors which include several special events that will take place this summer. Pam Carson asked the Fire Chief if the association could arrange to have district homes and apartments inspected for fire code compliance [smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, other] who agreed our district was a suitable area to concentrate its efforts. A further meeting will take place to flesh out the details. Pam outlined the status of the NO SMOKING bylaw, explaining why it was raised by the Great River Network several years ago which requested a sufficient number of signs be placed along the WATERFRONT TRAIL and HARBOR which was endorsed by city council. Justin offered to follow up on its status. Justin indicated he was aware of the efforts of the association and its objectives. He agreed to make an immediate site visit to one of the unsafe and crumbling buildings, at the request of the homeowner who lives next to this property. Mark indicated Shawna Spowart, Chief of Police, accepted our invitation to meet and we expect to meet with her in the next few weeks. He indicated our detailed report produced in April 2021 would be used as a framework for discussion at this special e meeting. The report covers issues from traffic on Montreal rd. to safety issues on the trail, mischief, theft, etc. The next meeting will allow Glen Grant, mayoral candidate, an opportunity to share his views on the district and for attendees to pose questions and provide suggestions. Meeting was adjourned at 1:50. Next meeting. Monday June 20, 2:00 pm. Napoleon’s Restaurant. Special guest. Mayor Glen Grant.

SUPPLIED BY CAREFOR CORNWALL Eastern Counties & Akwasasne, ON - As June 15th is observed as World Elder Abuse Prevention Day, it’s important to recognize not all seniors are in the best of circumstances. It’s estimated that 7 to 10% of older Canadians are victims of elder abuse. Physical, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse and can result in distress, impairment, or bodily injury. Every senior deserves the right to feel safe, and live free from abuse. The theme of World Elder Abuse Prevention Day for 2022 is “Rights don’t get old.” Basic human rights of older Canadians are

challenged and undercut every day and, tragically, this has never been more true than over the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s estimated that 1 in 6 seniors are victims of elder abuse. Within the Eastern Counties alone, the Carefor Elder Abuse Prevention Program has seen an increase of over 40% in elder abuse cases since March 2020. Tanya Mayich, Carefor’s Elder Abuse Prevention Coordinator, and Community Network Chair for the Prevention of Elder Abuse for the Eastern Counties and Akwasasne shared, “Seniors who lack capacity or have serious medical issues can

be taken advantage of by the people closest to them. It is key to have good support around these seniors.” It is imperative within our local community that we educate ourselves of the universal warning signs and the associated risk factors concerning elder abuse, and advocate for the rights of seniors. Tanya explained, “This day is celebrated to advocate for seniors so their voices can be heard. We must acknowledge elder abuse as a public and human rights issue throughout the community and around the world. Every older adult deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we can only make a difference if we mobilize together as a community.” Seniors have the right to live free from abuse and you can make a difference. If you know a senior experiencing any type of abuse, if you need support, or have any questions or need further information call Carefor’s Elder Abuse Prevention Coordinator at 613 932-3451 ext. 4244 or visit www. elderabusepreventionservices.com.
