A Celebration of Coronado

What is 92118 Day ? 92118 Day is a rare occasion where the Coronado zip code (92118) matches up with the calendar date September 21, 2018 (9-21-18). Local resident, Steve Johnson, noticed the “date meets zip” connection a few years ago and started dreaming up a community celebration worthy of this centennial event. The goal: bring together Coronado neighbors to highlight and enjoy the best of the 92118! And, Steve wanted this community celebration to take place on Coronado’s award winning beaches, which was completely unprecedented! The City Council unanimously approved Steve’s vision and, with the participation of hundreds of local residents, businesses, organizations, and City leaders, this once-in-a lifetime celebration has come to fruition. 92118 Day will include Coronado’s most popular live bands rocking a stage on Ocean Blvd, surrounded by a tent city-esque row of the Island’s favorite restaurants, bars, philanthropic organizations, and merchants, all enjoyed by the best part of Coronado: the residents. September 21, 2018 conveniently lands on a Friday and occurs during the season locals affectionately refer to as “Second Summer”, when the tourists leave and the Island is returned to the locals to enjoy. What better way to kick-off the last Summer weekend before Autumn arrives? Let’s make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime event and celebrate Coronado with our neighbors!

Thank You, Coronado! Thank you City of Coronado! A huge thanks to the City of Coronado for approving, funding and supporting 92118 Day with your amazing staff. This event could not have happened without the City's generous and valuable assistance. We have so much respect and appreciation for the individuals who lead and serve this community. Thank you Local Businesses, Organizations and the Navy, Putting on an event only works with the support of the key assets in a community. This celebration includes over 100 businesses, organizations and one of Coronado's biggest and best neighbors, the United States Navy. We are so fortunate to have the presence of so many of our extraordinary local entities at 92118 Day, whether selling goods, serving drinks, playing music, showing off Navy vehicles, hosting activities, or coordinating games on the beach. A heartfelt thank you to all of you for participating in this once-in-a-lifetime Coronado celebration! Thank you Volunteers! Hundreds of our Coronado residents answered the call to volunteer their time, energy and talents to make this celebration happen. It takes a “Coronado Village to put on an event like this and we are so thankful for the thousands of hours dedicated by so many to make 92118 Day a success. Sincerely,

Rob Crenshaw, Steve Johnson and Alisa Kerr 92118 Day Planning Committee

The Planning Team Being part of 92118 Day has been an absolute pleasure and at times, surprisingly complex!! I had no idea that this “zip code celebration” would become such a huge undertaking - but the arduous journey has overall, been a positive one. By far, the best part of this adventure has been making new Coronado friendships and deepening existing relationships. It’s an important reminder for me to get out of my comfort zone, turn off technology and get more involved in my community. 92118 Day has already been a success for me personally and I can’t wait to celebrate on 9-21-18.

Steve Johnson Publisher, The Coronado Times Board Member, Coronado Chamber of Commerce 92118 Day Planning Team

When Steve Johnson first approached me about planning 92118 Day I was instantly “all in” solely because I absolutely love living in Coronado. Now, having had the opportunity over the last year to work closely with the City administration, a wide variety of local businesses and organizations, and hundreds of residents, I have a new level of pride in being a member of such an outstanding community. The amount of talent, generosity, and enthusiasm on this little Island is truly impressive. It makes 92118 Day even more meaningful and exciting. I’m looking forward to celebrating Coronado with each of you at this once-in-a-lifetime event, and always!

2018 Coronado Magazine - September

When Steve Johnson first approached me with this wild idea about commemorating Coronado's Zip code with a crazy celebration this September 21, 2018 —or 9/21/18, I was thrilled and honored that he requested my assistance. I enjoy the challenge of being part of a team planning something that's never been done before. We billed this as a “Once-in-a-100-Year Event," but I predict that in five to ten years Zip codes will no longer be used as technology advances and the mail services as we know them will render Zip codes obsolete. I know the event will rate as a "Once-in-a-Lifetime” celebration and that truly excites me. We have assembled a fantastic team who will esure this event will be classy and memorable. Please pass the word and let all your neighbors and friends know to join us on Ocean Boulevard and at Central Beach for this once-in-a-lifetime community celebration. We look forward to seeing you there on 9/21/18!

The History of 92118

Christine Stokes, Museum Director Vickie Stone, Registrar & Curator of Collections Coronado Historical Association

With 92118 Day coming this September, we started to wonder about the history of our zip code. Today there are more than 40,000 ZIP codes in the United States. It’s hard to imagine how mail could function without them, but ZIP codes weren’t always around.

In the early days of Coronado, there were no street addresses and so few residents that mail was addressed without a street number or street name. Residents were required to go pick up their mail at the post office which frequently changed locations. Occasionally, cross streets would be included on mail, but there was no postal delivery until 1914.

Not all Coronado residents complied with the implementation of the address numbering system in a timely manner. Postmaster Robbins wrote in The Strand newspaper, “mail will positively not be delivered at houses unless the number is displayed prominently on the dwelling.” After a few years, use of the building and street numbering system became routine. According to the United States Postal Service, thousands of experienced postal employees left to serve in World War II. To offset the loss, in May 1943 the federal Post Office Department began a zoning address system in 124 of the largest cities. One or two numbers between the city and state identified zones. For example, Birmingham was Birmingham 7, Alabama. The new employees used these zones to separate the mail quickly.

9·21·18

Twenty years later, the Department implemented an even farther reaching plan, the Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code. In June 1962, after a study of mechanization, the presidentially appointed Advisory Board of the Post Office Department made several recommendations. One was the development of a coding system. Postmaster General J. Edward Day announced that the ZIP Code would launch July 1, 1963. In order to promote the idea of ZIP codes, “Mr. Zip” appeared as the cartoon mascot for the campaign, touting “Put ZIP in your mail!”.

So, why 92118?

92118 is a standard zip code, meaning it is not a unique code assigned to one high-volume address, a P.O. Box only zip code, or a U.S. military zip code. Zip codes are assigned by geographic zone. The first number, nine (9), is assigned to the most western geographic regions: Alaska (AK), American Samoa (AS), California (CA), Guam (GU), Hawaii (HI), Marshall Islands (MH), Federated States of Micronesia (FM), Northern Mariana Islands (MP), Oregon (OR), Palau (PW), Washington (WA), Army Post Office Pacific (AP), and Fleet Post Office Pacific (AP). The next two digits represent the sectional center facility (SCF), and the fourth and fifth digits represent the area of the city (if in a metropolitan area), or a village/town (outside metro areas). Like area codes, ZIP codes are sometimes divided and changed, especially when a rural area becomes suburban. Coronado has always been 92118 since it was assigned.

Coronado residents seemed to take more time to adapt to the addition of the ZIP codes in comparison to the implementation of building

numbers of earlier times. The postmaster’s holiday tips of 1964 included a gentle reminder about how the ZIP code expedited shipping. This was especially important for holiday packages to arrive on time. Marketing about ZIP codes was used well into the 1970s.

Use of the ZIP code system has regulated mail processing for 55 years and has even sparked community pride. On 92118 Day be sure to celebrate the special place that is Coronado but also the achievements of postal efficiency!

The Coronado Public Library and the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission will announce the 2019 Coronado Community Read selection during festivities for 92118 Day! A subcommittee of the Literary Arts Working Team read through the sixty-five titles nominated by the community and narrowed the field down to five finalists shown above. Coronado’s Community Read is a program that encourages residents to join together in the shared experience of reading and discussion of one book. The idea to read a single book is credited to a librarian at the Seattle Public Library who in 1998 began a program called “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book.” Since then, numerous communities across the country have begun their own reading programs, including San Diego’s “One Book, One San Diego,” held annually since 2005. In Coronado, the Community Read began in 2017, as a partnership between the Coronado Public Library, the city’s Cultural Arts Commission, and other community partners. Its goals are to promote literacy and a vibrant literary culture in the community; introduce and draw people to the library, and bring residents together with shared experiences through planned events related to the book. The community has voted for their favorite and now is the time to stop by the Coronado Public Library Tent at the 92118 Day Festivities for your chance to win a copy of the 2019 Coronado Community Read Book. Be sure to visit CoronadoARTS.com for more information on the selection and a list of community events scheduled to begin in late February 2019. The Coronado Community Read receives generous support for this project through the Friends of the Coronado Public Library.

9·21·18 The Coronado Island Film Festival, now in its third year, attracts makers and lovers of movies to our unique seaside village, to share and celebrate the magical art of visual storytelling. Coronado’s enduring love affair with Hollywood began back in the earliest days of filmmaking, when “movie people” were irresistibly drawn to the still-legendary hospitality of the iconic Hotel del Coronado (the Festival’s Presenting Sponsor), built right on the sand in 1888. Coronado’s world-class beaches, perfect weather, and proximity to Hollywood have made it a favorite go-to spot for the stars since those halcyon days when Errol Flynn, Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin strolled the Avenue.

Well over 140 films have been filmed in Coronado. They include the following nine films. One stars a future President and First Lady. Several have military themes from WWII to the SEALs who train in Coronado. Comedic geniuses such as Jerry Lewis, Rick Moranis and Steve Martin worked on the island and of course the iconic “Some Like It Hot,” filmed in the shadow of the Hotel del Coronado is celebrating its 60th Anniversary and considered by many as the best comedy film of all times. Joan Brown Goldberg, A Coronado 9·21·18 Gem

By Toni Trinidad

I met Joan in June 2018, on the last day of school at Village Elementary. The building was empty; the children gone. Just teachers and staff remained to say goodbye to the end of another year. As I walked out of school, feeling free, I noticed a woman talking with our office staff about music. Joan Brown Goldberg was like a little sparkle one might notice in the sand - there was just something about her that caught my attention. Joan wanted to speak to someone about reviving a lost song she had written years ago - “Growing Up At The Village School” - at the request of former principal, Maureen McGrath. So I asked if I could help. And just as a child who finds a sparkling treasure on the beach, I held on. I listened. That afternoon, I could have just kept walking through the office on my way into summer; but instead, I chose to sit with Joan right there, listening to her story, and learning about the musical gifts she had given our town. Remarkable gifts that had somehow been lost and buried, like important treasures in the sand. By the end of the hour, I had promised to help her. Joan Brown came to Coronado from New Jersey at age nine with her parents, Frances and M.J. Brown, sisters Lois and Marjorie, and brother Ken. The family is well known for their landmark Orange Avenue shop of 57 years which still bears her father’s name. Joan graduated from Coronado High School in 1961, then attended Stephens College for Women, receiving her B.A. in Theatre from SDSU. Later, Joan married attorney, Russ Goldberg, and had two children: Lotus (CHS 89) and Henry (CHS 98). She also earned an M.A. in Holistic Health Education from The University for Humanistic Studies. Joan’s son married Dr. Nitzan Roth, and together have a son: Joan’s grandchild, Tal Goldberg. Joan has written over 40 songs; three of which she gifted to Coronado: The Coronado Song, Growing Up At The Village School, and Keep Your Eye on a Star. After 62 years, Joan still lives in Coronado, her favorite spot on earth. Listening to a sermon earlier this year which urged “don’t die with the music still in you”, Joan was moved to action. Coming off a few health scares, she wanted to be sure Coronado still had its songs. And it was that moment that would inevitably bring Joan and me together on that June afternoon. The anthem which declared Coronado as a town where “the crashing waves will set you ablaze, and launch you into a dream” was Joan’s first song for Coronado. Listening to it transported me back to a timeless Coronado, summoning my imagination with its lyrics and tune. Most recognized as the song played at the grandstands before the 4th of July parade, “The Coronado Song”, was written in the 1970s. At the time, Joan loved to walk along the beach. Each day she went to the ocean, the melody and lyrics would reveal themselves to her in pieces as she admired the beauty of Coronado. She would return daily until the song was complete. It quickly became a big hit, being performed twice at Concerts in the Park in the late 1970s, by local singers Lynda Balkam and Marcia Banks, with musical accompaniment by The Mesa College Band under the arrangement of John Wyman. Anyone who was there would remember the excitement as lyric sheets were passed out and the whole crowd joined in a sing-along. The song earned many awards and had been performed by local musicians at the Del and Mexican Village restaurant, and by area college band ensembles. For years the sheet music was sold at The Hotel Del, MJ Brown’s, Perkins Bookworm, and Central Drug Store. The original artwork on the cover was created by Doug Kipperman, local artist and former CHS Teacher. It’s no wonder that Village Elementary principal, Maureen McGrath, knew of Joan in the early 1990s. When McGrath asked her to write a song for the school, Joan wanted to help; but said she couldn’t write on demand. She promised, however, that if a song came to her she would share it. Nine months later, Joan woke up and the song, “Growing Up At The Village School” arrived in its entirety. She never once had to work it out on the piano. The song proclaims the virtues of our school. The second stanza begins “In my classroom at the Village School, my teacher’s teaching me, That everyone

was born with talent, For their own great destiny. So I don’t compete with anyone, I just compete with me. And instead I’m working to become the best that I can be.” McGrath would have her song, and Joan always felt it was a gift that 48

came through her for the school where her own children had attended. In 1992, the whole school sang it to Joan at their annual “5th grade Olympics”, a tradition which has since moved to the middle school as “The 6th Grade Olympics”. The song, however, was somehow lost over time. Another song, Keep Your Eye on A Star, was originally written for her daughter, Lotus. The song tells its listener to stay their course and be true to their own direction in life. “Keep your eye on a star. Keep your heart reaching far. Keep your

ship on its course. Be the captain, of course. All the journeys you know, Just adventures to grow. You’re aboard life’s crew - let the talent within you shine through.” When Joan’s youngest, Henry, was in 8th grade, the song was played at the graduation ceremony for him and his Coronado Junior High classmates of 1994. Joan’s husband, Russ, designed the “Star” sheet music, and the Goldberg family passed out a personal copy to each graduating 8th grader as a memento. Joan is not the only musical Brown. Her brother, Ken Brown, won the Bank of America Music Award for the CHS class of 1964. Ken went on to establish the “M.J. Brown Family Performing Arts Music Award” at CHS in 1997. Coincidently, the first recipient of the award was Matt Heinecke (CHS 97), Coronado Unified School District’s current Music Director. In a uniquely-Coronado connection, Matt now carries on the love of music in our schools with students at Village, CMS, and CHS. Matt is also a popular local performer. The M.J. Brown Family Performing Arts Music Award is in its 22nd year, being awarded annually to a deserving graduating senior. As I sat in the Village office with Joan that June afternoon, I knew something special had come to me. Joan simply wanted her songs to be enjoyed by the people of Coronado, for whom they were written. I promised I would share it with our school, and with the Coronado Community. I’m working steadily with some teaching colleagues to bring the songs back to our students. A large poster of the song’s lyrics hangs prominently in my CSF-Funded Computer Lab where I teach STEAM-focused lessons with all students in grades TK - 5. The students have been wide-eyed with intrigue about our long-lost songs. In order to share the music with our community, I reached out to Kelly Purvis, Contract Arts Administrator for the City of Coronado. To my delight, Kelly was as thrilled about the music as me. I wanted to bring the songs back to our schools; but it was Kelly’s vision to bring Joan’s music to “92118 Day”. Mariah Gillespie, Music Commissioner with the Coronado Arts Commission will be leading the song on piano with the original “Coronado Song” singer, Lynda Balkam, on vocals at the festivities. Lyric sheets for Joan’s songs will be available to the crowd to sing along. Meeting Joan and hearing her story made me feel hopeful and happy on that day back in June. On 92118 Day, you can feel it too: the sparkle of music written expressly for us by our own local gem, Joan Brown Goldberg.

CORONADO, Where the sun shines, Where the grand Hotel meets the sand, and the crashing waves will set you ablaze And launch you into a dream. CORONADO, LiƩle island, With skies as blue as can be … I long to walk on your tanned California sand And sit by your sparkling sea. I miss your cold windy days, That grey winter haze, And fog horns blowin all night; Your summer perfume of jasmine in bloom … Your seaside seagulls in ight. CORONADO, on a sea breeze, You know you’re haunƟng me so, You are the Queen of the Coast, You’re the mariners’ host And the most lovely Lady I know.

9·21·18 Cultural Arts Commission Art by the Numbers

The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is sponsoring two art‐themed events during the upcoming 92118 Celebraon. A community public art project “Art by the Numbers” is in partnership with the Coronado High School Visual Arts Department. A team of CHS student arsts (alumni and current students) have designed a ve‐panel art piece to mark the celebraon of this once in a lifeme occurrence of our zip code on the calendar. Each panel features a digit of the Coronado zip code with iconic images of Coronado to create a vintage postcard effect. The designs have been drawn on the wood boards in a paint by numbers format. The community is invited to paint during the fesvies and everyone is welcome to be a contribung arst on this project. The art work was conceived by the Commission and a visual arts team led by Coronado High School art teacher and alumni Karrie Jackson. Her team of arsts are Angel Jimenez, Gina Aguirre, Alyssa Agarwal, Summer Haddaway, Sokline Peterhans, and Emily Williams. The Cultural Arts Commission will have all ve panels displayed in their tent starng at 3 p.m. Student arsts will be volunteering to engage and assist the public in compleng this project. The painng will be completed the day of the celebraon and the panels will return to the high school for nal touches. The Commission will determine a site to recommend to the City Council for temporary display in the community.

Book Club? The concept of book clubs has been around for some time and these days, you can find a wide variety of them ranging from local, to nation-wide, even international groups, and getting involved in one may seem fairly common. Perhaps less common is stumbling across the book club – the one that demonstrates beyond a doubt the power books have to bring a group of diverse people together. The one that becomes a second family through years of shared experiences and deeper discussion. Coronado is home to not one, but three long-standing, tightly knit literary groups: “The Coronado Women’s Book Club,” “The Above Average Book Club,”and the “Boo-K Club.”

Lei Udell joined “The Coronado Women’s Book Club” in 1995, a few years after its creation as the club is celebrating its 25th year anniversary. “It sounded like fun to me, since I’ve always loved reading books and talking about books, and once I learned there was wine involved, well!”

As 23 years have passed since she first joined, lifetime friendships and bonds have been formed, prompted each month by a shared reading experience. “Together, we have discussed every topic there is, including the tough ones like religion and politics—and of course child-rearing. In the background, we had some babies, raised our toddlers, preened over our children’s high school, college, and then career achievements, celebrated some weddings, analyzed our marriages, endured remodels, battled our own health and career issues, aided our failing parents, and cried at some incomprehensible tragedies. We have entertained and educated each other, celebrated and comforted each other. In short, we’ve shared so much more than the books.”

Above: The Coronado Women’s Book Club traveled to England in to a long time member Amanda Preston who had recently moved back. The trip coincided with their 20 year anniversary in 2013. Top left: The Coronado Women’s Book Club, standing from left, Renee Brinkman, Ann Wilson, Cindy Pitttman, Narelle Pettee, Stacy GomezHall Susie Clifford, Jenny Moore. Sitting from left, Nancy McRae, Laura Taylor, Lei Udell, Kim Stewart and Marva Cappello.

Tippy Thibodeau was one of the two founders of “The Above Average Book Club,” having formed it with Meg Helgerson – another new Coronado arrival at the time – in 1972. Their shared love of books and desire to meet others in town with a similar passion for reading sparked the idea of creating a book club. It took a year for the idea to become a reality, and the result was better than they could have expected. “The original group were from varied professions, many states, and mostly new to Coronado. That was the idea--lending the discussions to many opinions and viewpoints.” Starting with “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” by Dee Brown, this group has made their way through hundreds of books since and remained a tightly knit community. Members that had to step away due to jobs or family have remained connected to the club and join in when they can. “Many came back to the club when possible. At some point, ‘The Book Club’ became ‘The Above Average Book Club,’ and after all these years there are many loyal and faithful members from the very early days of 1972.”

56

2018 Coronado Magazine - September

In October 2004, the book “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire was being discussed at Sheila Roberston’s home. Members dressed up as characters from the book, with one good witch, more than a few bad witches and a scarecrow for good measure. After meeting for more than 45 years, member Carol Grimaud said, “We’ve had babies together, now we’re grandparents together. Through all of this, we know each other so well. Our book club meetings give us a safe environment to share our lives.” Beginning from upper right and working downwards, Sheila Robertson, Judy Kissell, Adrienne Phillips, Elizabeth Smith, Mary Kerley, Mary Ussery, Brenda Kolassa, Dixie McCarthy, Louise Cate and Cindi Saunders.

In December of 2001, Coronado resident and literary enthusiast Malu Fernandez started the “Boo-K Club” (pronounced “bouquet”). Margaret Wright is among the eleven women that are the backbone of this nearly 18-year-old group, and she can still recall many of the striking discussions and fond memories she’s shared over the course of the 185 books they’ve read together. “One of the books identified as unusual and quite memorable was ‘Conquest of Copper Mountain: A Vivid, Personal Account of the Discovery and Development of a Spectacular Outcrop of Ore in the Remote Peaks of Irian Jaya, Indonesia’ by Forbes Wilson. A variety of comments led to new understanding and appreciation for a book that may not have been read by some of us had we not had the opportunity to openly discuss the genre…We have never been just a book club. We have explored great literature, involved ourselves in tremendous discussions, enjoyed a camaraderie that is outstanding, and look forward to the future.” The women of the “Boo-K Club” incorporate a variety of other activities when they can to complement each month’s reading selection. “We have enhanced the understanding of the literary selection by involving invited guests, attending a movie on the subject of the book, and designing our refreshments or light dinner to reflect the content or ethnicity of the book.”

Trip to Berlin, 2011

The Boo-K Book Club met at Christmas Brunch 2017 at Carol Sloan’s home. “We all show a children’s book that we purchased to donate and review the book and explain why we purchased it. Margaret [Wright] finds a worthy organization to receive these books each year. No member is willing to miss this meeting,” said Sloan. From left, Marcia Hughes, Gwen Hovland, Margaret Wright, Chris Sloan, Doris Besicoff, Jackie Mullin, Malu Fernandez, Diane Kueny, Heidi Erdmann, Laurie Bella, and Joy Kleber.

Book clubs are wonderful ideas in and of themselves – an encouragement to take time out of our busy lives to read more and discuss new ideas with others? Yes please! But moreover, a book club is a starting point, an opportunity for something so much deeper. What begins as a way to meet people or bring together a group with a shared passion can blossom into close bonds of friendship. The “Coronado Women’s Book Club,” “Above Average Book Club,” and” Boo-K Club” are each made up of members from different backgrounds and careers, and book clubs are a perfect place to broaden horizons through discussion stemming from diverse perspectives. Two of these Coronado groups have had the opportunity to travel to Europe together, and members of all three are finding ways to connect as a group beyond their monthly meetings, planning outings to the movies or even escape rooms together. So what’s in a book club? So much more than a monthly book to read; that’s just the beginning!

At a joint book club meeting with the Lydia’s Book Club, the Coronado Women’s Book Club met this August at the Coronado Yacht Club. From left, Merrie Mebust, Julie Stansell, Cindy Pittman, Kim Stewart, Jenny Moore, Laura Taylor, Marva Cappello, Narelle Pettee, Susie Clifford, Sylvia Shaughnessy, Lei Udell, and Bette Ruzevik.

What is the Value of a House? 1116 Tenth Street

Part III- From Residential to Business Property - 1960 - 2018

In the mid 1940’s the property of 1116 Tenth Street, now with two homes on it, had been owned by Maria Schram and Elsie Griffin. Elsie eventually came to own the entire property – both lots – when, upon Maria Schram’s death, Elsie Griffin, who was also executor of the estate, was transferred the property through a termination of the joint tenancy. It is not clear how or why Elsie came to jointly own the property or how she was chosen to be Executor of Maria’s estate.

Several of Elsie’s tenants over that period stand out. One is Mrs. Dorothy Scott whose two sons, in 1960 “made Air Force history recently when one of them refueled his brother’s plane in the air, completely by chance. Both are members of the 70th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base. Capt. G. H. Scott was commander of a 70th Air Refueling Squadron KC-97 which refueled the RB-47 in which his brother, Maj. William L. Scott, was instructor pilot for the 26th Strategic

Reconnaissance Squadron,” according to the Eagle and Journal. She lived in the house from 1958-1963. Another couple that stand out are Ruth and Milburn Taylor. Ruth and Milburn were married in Texas in August of 1963 and moved to Coronado and into the house that same month. Milburn was in the Navy and had been sent to Coronado for training. Ruth said that this was their first home together. She said, “It was a duplex. There 2018 Coronado Magazine - September

Street until he was in the fourth grade at Village Elementary. Aldo believes that his family was able to rent the house somehow through their connection to the Hotel Del. His father was a lead landscape architect at the Hotel Del, who was responsible for developing “a lot of the front view of the hotel.” Aldo said that his father worked “a very long time at the Del.”

was another young couple who lived in the back half [and we lived in the front] … we would go out into the mountains together and we would stay up late playing games all night.” Ruth also recounted that her landlady – “she was a great little landlady” – was Elsie Griffin, who lived in the shed out back that was connected to the garage. When asked what she remembered about Elsie, Ruth said, “The thing I know – she was very conservative – and she liked her apricot brandy!” About Coronado more generally, Ruth said, “We loved Clayton’s Café … and the library. The joke was that my husband went down there to check out books on improving his memory, but then forgot to take them back … And, of course we loved the Hotel Del. We didn’t get to stay there then (we were too poor, on an enlisted Navy salary), but later in life we did, when we were living in Los Angeles while my husband went to school, my husband took me there when I turned thirty. And, when I ordered a glass of wine, they carded me!” Ruth continued, “We liked the dime store there on the corner, or the Variety Store [Troxel’s], and … as you go down Tenth to the corner and to the Del [along C], there

was a little set of fancy retail shops. I bought a piece of clothing - a wrap-around split skirt/pant … I still have it today. It came from one of those stores … And, all of the things you learn as a new bride … to cook … I learned it all in that house …” Ruth said that if she could choose any place to retire, when that time comes, it would be to Coronado. “Coronado got into our souls.” She and Milburn were shipped out to Japan after just five months in Coronado, but they have come back many times to visit. Eventually, they made it back to Texas where she became a professor of Marketing and Milburn became a cartoonist. There they raised two sons. In fact, one son has visited Coronado with his wife and visited the little house where his parents first began their marriage. Finally, as the house became began to fall into disrepair after Elsie left in the 1970s (she died in 1980), a number of families and later businesses shuffled through. One of the very last families that lived in the house was the Ochoa family – Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Ochoa, who brought home their new baby boy, Aldo Ochoa, in 1980. Aldo grew up in Coronado and his recollection is that his family rented the house on Tenth

2018 Coronado Magazine - September

Aldo’s recollection of the house was that it was in “poor condition,” with “some kind of plant that covered the whole outside wall growing in through the walls.” But, he had happy memories of his time there, with his sister “walking me down to the park – Spreckels Park – and making chocolate chip cookies for me.” Aldo also said that he spent a great deal of time at the Del. He said that, besides his father, several other of his relatives worked at the Del and so he spent many hours wandering the hallways, exploring and even going into the “haunted room,” although he says he never saw anything there. Aldo was a good student – his name shows up many times as being on the Coronado Middle School honor roll. However, he only stayed at Coronado High School into 11th grade. Sometime before that, his father had lost his job at the Del. Aldo says that the Del had been sold and the new owner decided to outsource the landscaping. While his parents stayed in Coronado for a little while after that, they eventually moved away. Aldo ended up living with a godparent and finishing High School at Mar Vista. Of Coronado High School, he said, “I missed the school a lot. Everybody that I went to school with – I went to school there from kindergarten on - everybody that I knew was in that school.” While Aldo went to Mar Vista to pursue the ROTC program and has since joined law enforcement, a job that sent him to Arizona, he says, if his job hadn’t moved him, “I probably never would have left.”

These are a few of the more personal stories associated with 1116 Tenth Street. But, the house had a substantial business past as well. Not only did it house the Eagle and Journal for the last 25 years, but it was also home to Aquarius Home Furnishings and Elf Valley Shoe Repair. And, it has become associated with some of the biggest business transactions in history as part of the accumulation of commercial acquisitions of Nina and Clark Hartwell, who also owned the Fitch Mansion on Ocean Boulevard. It is now one of the buildings that was acquired by Bruce Kleege as part of the “Shops at Coronado.” So, what is the value of a house? The value of the Eagle House is intrinsic in these stories and who knows how many other stories there are that we have yet to uncover? But, what we know so far is that the house tells the story of Coronado from many perspectives, but primarily from the perspective of the common citizen. While many of our historic homes are associated with the wealthy and powerful, theirs is not the only history of Coronado. The history of Coronado is also that of a new town where a painter can come and find his fortune as a commercial developer. It is that of two women, both without husbands, who support each other and manage businesses and tenants. It is also the story of the military – the widow (whose husband died while testing attack planes) whose sons make military history achieving a “unique” feat in the air. And, it is the story of the people who built the hotel Del, who made it what it was from the inside and out. The Eagle House, whatever it represents to its new owner, stands for all of us. And, it has stood for over 120 years. That is something. It is likely the case that Elisha Babcock never stepped foot in it (although, who knows?), but without it and all of the other houses like it that are now gone, but which housed all of the workers of Coronado, his grand hotel and his grand vision of Coronado would not have been built.

What’s in Season? Oh, the scent of garlic! That small, pungent vegetable is part of the onion family and enjoys it’s own place in the kitchen and our hearts. Popular belief has garlic diminishing colds and high blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, building up the immune system. It has anti inflammatory properties and can help athletes. While some test results point to these healing properties, the jury is still out. What is known is that garlic does contain antioxidants, manganese, Vitamins B6 and C, selenium and fiber - all good things for you.

Aromatic Garlic What’s in season?

Store garlic cloves in a mesh bag, wire basket or small bowl with lots of ventilation. Plastic or sealed containers can cause mold and sprouting. Stored right at 60-65 degrees in moderate humidity, garlic can last up to three months. Be warned - heated winter homes can cause garlic to dry out and shrivel. Storing in the fridge will help with humidity, however it will begin to sprout with the coldness within days of being brought out to room temperature. Bring on the garlic!

When choosing bulbs of garlic, look for those that are completely dry, plump and firm and has a papery sheath. Avoid bulbs that are soft, damaged or have begun to sprout. Each bulb contains about 10-20 cloves. There are many varieties of garlic, with “culinary” garlic the one found most often in grocery stores. Elephant garlic can also easily be found and is milder and more closely related to the leek.

9·21·18 “Sit a Spell and Play a Tune”

The Cultural Arts Commission will have the Adella Plaza “Sit a Spell and Play a Tune” piano in their 92118 tents along with a Big Electronic Keyboard (Think “Big” the movie with Tom Hanks), to allow residents an opportunity to enjoy the public art piano and make their own music during the fesvies. Sit a Spell and Play a Tune” is an interacve arsc and musical public art program of the City’s Cultural Arts Commission that places brightly wrapped pianos at outdoor locaons around Coronado. Now in its second year, the program has expanded to include three pianos, up from one, and acvely involves the community. The pianos, donated by residents, are wrapped in artwork by local arsts Jody Esquer, Tina Chrisansen and Karrie Jackson. They are located in Coronado Rotary Plaza, Adella Plaza and the Coronado Ferry Landing. The pianos provide access to musical opportunity, foster creavity, and build a sense of community among the public and, in the process, raise awareness for public art and music iniaves. Cultural Arts Commissioner Mariah Gillespie will be manning the booth and encourages local pianists to come by the tent and Sit a Spell and Play a Tune!
