CHAMBER MEMBER
honor roll
Thank you for all your continued support!
Dear Coronado, The holidays just shine brighter in Coronado and it promises to be another spectacular year for the annual Coronado Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade as we celebrate our 44th anniversary. This hometown tradition is my favorite night of the year. Our parade is packed with all manner of local organizations from sports teams, scout troops, marching bands, military entrants and church groups. As is only proper for our little town, our police department gets top billing but look for the Nado VW vans and surfing association to energize the crowd in the first wave. Over 1400 people will participate (plus several dozen dogs!). And the Parade wouldn’t be complete without Lil’ Mac, our fully restored fire truck #80 that has answered the bell here in Coronado since 1939. This has been an exciting year for the Chamber, with a newly launched Chamber website and new partnerships working together to revitalize Orange Avenue, we have loved helping our businesses succeed so that our community prospers. The Chamber has welcomed new restaurants, non-profits, and amazing new local businesses. We celebrated Military Spouses and Celebrated Coronado’s heroes and first responders. We cannot wait to show you what we have in store for 2020!
Crown Island Insurance
Before heading to Orange Avenue on the night of the parade, enjoy Snow Mountain at the Ferry Landing. The kids will enjoy watching Santa arrive on the Ferry and slide down the tons of snow that the City imports just for this occasion. Time permitting Santa and his Elves will be available for photos. The Parade begins at 6 pm, but head to Rotary Park around 5 pm for a Parade Preview and holiday sing-along with musical accompaniment courtesy of Mariah Gillespie on the public piano. Santa brings up the rear of the Parade so that he can stop by to help us light the Christmas tree and Menorah. The Coronado Community Band will be providing a holiday concert immediately after the Parade. It is also our pleasure to collaborate with the City to allow for free metered parking from November 29th – December 25th! Remember that Orange Avenue will remain closed after the Parade to encourage everyone to hang around downtown, visit with friends, knock out some holiday shopping (#ShopLocal) and enjoy dinner. Thanks to EDCO for being our Title Sponsor again this year! The Chamber also wants to extend a huge thank you to all of the behind-the-scenes work of the City Departments – Police, Fire, Recreation, Public Works and more! Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a magnificent New Year! Sue Gillingham Executive Director Coronado

Away in a Manger Away in a manger No crib for His bed The little Lord Jesus Lay down His sweet head The stars in the sky Look down where He lay The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay
Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman Was a jolly happy soul With a corncob pipe And a button nose and Two eyes made out of coal Frosty the snowman Is a fairy tale they say He was made of snow But the children know How he came to life one day
The cattle are lowing The poor Baby wakes But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky And stay by my side ‘Til morning is nigh
There must have been some magic In that old silk hat they found For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around Frosty the snowman Was alive as he could be And the children say He could laugh and play Just the same as you and me
Be near me, Lord Jesus I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me, I pray Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care And take us to Heaven To live with Thee there Deck the Halls Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la! ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la… Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la… Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la… See the blazing yule before us, Fa la la… Strike the harp and join the chorus, Fa la la… Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la… While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa la la… Fast away the old year passes, Fa la la… Hail the new, ye lads and lasses, Fa la la… Sing we joyous all together! Fa la la… Heedless of the wind and weather, Fa la la…

Frosty the snowman Knew the sun was hot that day So he said, “Let’s run And we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away” Down to the village With a broomstick in his hand Running here and there All around the square Saying “Catch me if you can” He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler “Stop!” Frosty the snowman Had to hurry on his way But he waved goodbye saying, “Don’t you cry I’ll be back again some day”

Confessions of a Perfect(ish) Mom by Hattie Foote
A Note to Santa Dear Santa, It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and I know this is your busy season, but I wanted to make sure you didn’t leave a very important person off your list. Mrs. Claus doesn’t get nearly enough credit, but we all know she is really running the show. She is the ultimate hype woman and she bakes killer gingerbread cookies. She is an expert elf wrangler, a friend to all reindeer, and always knows where the keys to your sleigh are. She is very nice, a little naughty (wink wink) and she deserves to be celebrated!

Might I suggest a trip to paradise, sunny Coronado, California! Christmas at the Hotel del Coronado is magical, you both will feel right at home. Give your sleigh a break and pop over to Coronado Golf Cars to ride around the island in style! Send her to the spa at the Loews or the Marriott, while you plan your routes and then head out to a cozy dinner at Primavera. The whole community would be thrilled to have you both attend our Holiday Parade and Open House! Another Santa will be present, so maybe you guys could take the night off and go incognito in some Urt gear. Finish the night off by sampling some holiday cheer at Coronado Brewing Company!

The next day, leave her relaxing on the beach and go start your Christmas shopping. I’m assuming you will need something a little stronger than hot chocolate, and luckily for you there are a ton of places to get caffeinated; Tartine, Claytons Bakery and Bistro, and Café 1134 to name a few. Don’t forget the real mission, finding Mrs. Claus the perfect gift. I will confidently say she will love anything and everything from Lumo. They have something for everyone, including a stunning Mama necklace, which is perfect for the Mother of Elves (doesn’t have the same ring as Mother of Dragons, but that’s beside the point). You can also get her initial rings, bracelets, and earrings to represent her favorite family members. Coronado Magazine

If you go into Seaside Papery, I’m sure you will run into some kids buying fancy stationary, trying to butter you up with their letters to you. They carry awesome stocking stuffers, lots of items that show Nado pride! Coronado Fitness Club carries Lululemon now, have you tried it? It makes sliding down chimneys a breeze! Once she gets a taste of a life in leggings, she will toss that dress and apron out the door; a true Cali girl now! You will need bags to carry all of your loot and you are in California now, so time to get on board with reusable bags! Bungalow 56 has the best Coronado tote; it is a local favorite. Adorn has the perfect elf sized bag to match her, environmentally friendly and chic! Coronado has such fun shopping but remember to put thought into it. Book a family photoshoot, or a gift certificate to indulge in some selfcare. Heck, even a coupon book for some weekend sleep ins! She will love the personal details and effort you made to make her feel special. Hopefully you will feel nice and relaxed after your visit, but it’s time to shake that sand out of your beard and get to work. Have a safe trip home and enjoy that mistletoe with your Christmas Queen! Candy cane kisses and holiday hugs! XOXO, Hattie

CHRISTMAS VILLAGE
Many
of us who enjoy having a Christmas village in our home for the holidays wish we could be more creative and have more space to have a larger village. Some people are lucky enough to have a big village like Penny Mason. She started with a small village 25 years ago and as her children grew the village grew as well. Today’s dimensions of her village is 8 feet by 4 feet in size. It takes a long time to create a large village like this year after year. In addition to being beautiful and imaginative, it never looks the same.

The world seems lighter and brighter at Christmas time. There are trees, twinkly lights and the spirit of giving is all around us.
This Christmas bring some magical light into your house with your own white Christmas. Bringing white into your home will add extra sparkle. It’s a clean and fresh look, both serene and simple. Our ocean shore is full of pale sand, shells, driftwood and sand dollars that have been bleached white by the sun. You don’t have to live in a place that snows to have a white Christmas.

According to folklore, German immigrants brought the concept of the indoor “Christmas tree to the United States in the mid-19th century. These immigrants also brought the concept of fake trees made of feathers, chenille and other materials. These artificial trees answered the purpose of real trees and could be folded up to do their joyous duty the following year. In 1918, Sears catalog listed an artificial tree for 98 cents, complete with a candle cup on each branch. Later in the late 1950s, it was discovered that brush making machines could be adapted to make bottle brush Christmas trees. This was quite a startling discovery that was perhaps the most important moment in the history of artificial trees.
An ivory white bottle brush tree stands in front of white coral with a little seahorse attached. This display is sitting on a cake pedestal.

Add some small beach touches to celebrate the beauty of living by the sea. You can do this by decorating with shells, driftwood, starfish or coral. You can buy or make ornaments inspired by the beach. Add a fishnet skirt to a beachy-themed tree or place shell trees or garlands of driftwood on the mantle or on tables. These ornaments make your holiday enchanting because they are gifts from the sea. Here, ocean inspired Christmas trees made of shells and sisal, are each topped with a star.

The differing textures and materials here make for a peaceful white winter scene. Christmas trees made of chenille wire and pipe cleaners are topped with clip-on vintage glass birds. The trees are surrounded by a white bottle brush wreath and are next to a felt swan wearing a holiday crown.

Homemade Christmas Cookies by Linda L. Austin
Along with the trees, ornaments, bells, and gifts, the holidays must include cookies and not necessarily ones that look like cut out trees or stockings with lavish coloring or artfully placed frostings. Taste is, of course, more important than the aesthetics for food. Green or red sprinkles, a dab of green frosting, maybe frosting buttons and eyes for gingerbread figures, that is the extent of my decorative ability. Most of my cookie dough simply plops onto the baking sheet and makes me happy. I am not a perfectionist. Baking is my enjoyable hobby, but not when it includes decorating cakes or cookies. Simple is good. Most people appreciate a delicious, homemade cookie anytime they are offered one. My family will love all four of these cookie offerings since their sweet taste is their main attraction. Coronado Magazine

Chocolate Surprise Cookies
My sister’s Chocolate Surprise Cookie recipe is one of her favorite company treats. They are delicious. These are good with frosting and without. 12 ounces milk chocolate chips 1/4 cup butter 1 can 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 bag Hershey Hugs with Almonds In saucepan over moderate heat, combine chips and butter. Stir until chips are melted and smooth, but do not overheat. Remove from heat and add condensed milk. Beat with a mixer until well blended. Add flour and vanilla and mix until incorporated. Batter will be stiff. Make small balls and wrap around an unwrapped Hugs chocolate candy. Place on parchment paper lined pans and cook for 6 to 10 minutes at 350º. Cool slightly before removing to rack to complete cooling. When cool, frost with cream cheese frosting drizzles. For the Frosting: Use either canned cream cheese frosting or your own frosting and drizzle through a frosting press (icing piping, small tip) back and forth on each cookie. For Christmas, drizzle a Christmas tree shape with tinted green frosting. Page 42

These cookies are fun, easy, and a great substitute for fruitcake. 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup light brown sugar 1 large egg 2 tablespoons water 1 1/2 cup sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 3/4 cup mixed candied fruits and peels, chopped 1/2 cup dates, chopped 1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped Cream together shortening and brown sugar. Add egg and water; beat well. Whisk dry ingredients together; stir into creamed mixture. Stir in fruits, dates, and nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake at 375º, about 10 minutes. Cool slightly before removing from pan. Makes about 3 ½ dozen cookies.

Date Pinwheel I made this for the first time for Christmas 2004 when I expected many guests for the holidays. My Aunt Lo Lyles Liverman sent it as her favorite cookie recipe, and she's a great cook. It has become one of my favorites, too. In the past, they had turned out beautifully, pinwheel effect in tact. The swirls are a bit tipsy here, but they are still captivating and they taste amazing.
1 pound pitted and chopped dates 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup pecans, chopped
Combine dates, water, and ½ cup granulated sugar in saucepan. Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream butter and remaining sugar; add egg and beat well. Add vanilla and mix. Combine dry ingredients and add into mixture. Stir until smooth. Divide dough into thirds. Roll on floured surface until 1/4 inch thick rectangle. Combine date mixture and nuts and divide into thirds. Spread evenly on dough. Roll like jelly roll. Wrap in waxed paper with seam on bottom. Repeat for remaining dough. Chill overnight. Remove from refrigerator and cut into 1/4 inch slices. Place on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 400º for 8 to 10 minutes. Yields 5 dozen. Coronado Magazine

A Vacation in Your Own Backyard at 1906 Lodge
Coronado Magazine
Page 51
The 1906 Lodge has a uniue history important to Coronado’s splendor. Throughout its past, it has been signiicantly transformed and provided many with lodging throughout the years. As it has passed through many hands and had its ups and downs, we are proud of the beautiful restoration and its return to a luxurious lodge. The architecture alone is signiicant and stretches beyond Coronado. The Lodge is the design of renowned San Diego architects, Will Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. Throughout its restoration, every step was taken to maintain its integrity and preserve the architect’s original vision. The two-story lodge was originally named the Grey Court Inn and is described as an Italian Eclectic Villa. Until more recent years, it served the community as a lodge for room and board. Built in 1906, the exterior rough stucco, the major box dormers, and hipped roofs are typical of Hebbard styles— which he brought from this expertise in Europe and major residences elsewhere in the country. It was designed utilizing reinforced concrete exterior walls and load-bearing interior walls 8 ⁄ inches in thickness. The interior smooth milky white walls, the Mission-style ireplace with spiraled leaded glass windows, and the “inglenook” or box-benched seats on either side are several of the Irving GiIl elements in the interior. The stairways railing and the coffered ceiling above the second loors are special design attributes of the residence. It should be noted that as an apprentice to Hebbard, Gill studied the special concrete construction at the Scripps Laboratories at La Jolla. Their partnership was seemingly unlikely, due to their vastly different personalities and work style, but has resulted in some beautiful work. The Lodge’s irst owner was Florence C. Roper and members of her family, who held possession of the property from 1906 to 1920. Little records of this time exist, yet their contribution was signiicant as this form of a residence for room and board with eleven bedrooms was uniue to Coronado. Some of Mrs. Roper’s earliest boards included students of the School of Aviation at North Island. The Winchester family, still living in Coronado (and elsewhere) acuired the Lodge during the 1920’s and retained it into the 1930’s renaming it the “Bay View Lodge.”
Page 52
Coronado Magazine
Other rooming houses in Coronado were available to Hotel del Coronado employees. These other Coronado rooming houses provided a room only, the board was not provided. This allowed the “Bay View Lodge” a one-of-a-kind living arrangement that was very desirable at the time, especially for workers on the island. Throughout the century, the Lodge had a certain appeal not found in other parts of the island. One even remembers the Lodge as the “First bar to serve drinks after prohibition,” according to an old photograph caption. Yet despite the lack of city documents throughout its past to conirm memories such as this, it has been a staple in Coronado’s history. In 1942, the Lodge was purchased by James J. Trant and renamed Trant Manor. It was used for years as a boarding house, and after years of decline and disrepair it was purchased and restored by the previous owners. The restoration was a complete labor of love for them.

BOOKSHELF
From My Shelf to Yours: Books For Every Winter Mood
By Alex Brady
For the Story-lover...
“The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruis Zafon
Set in Barcelona shortly after World War II, “The Shadow of the Wind” is both a gothic mystery and an ode to readers. At the onset our bookloving protagonist Daniel is initiated into the Cemetery of Forgotten Books—an eclectic library of neglected books managed by a handful of rare book dealers. Inside the dark and winding shelves Daniel finds a copy of “The Shadow of the Wind” written by one Julian Carax. But, to much intrigue, Daniel discovers that someone has been systematically searching for and burning all of Carax’s novels. Daniel’s newfound copy is one of the last in circulation and he’s determined to protect it. At its heart, “The Shadow of the Wind” is really a celebration of storytelling both through its well-wrought characters, twisting plot, and riotous dialogue, (“People talk too much. Humans aren’t descended from monkeys. They come from parrots.”), and through Daniel’s fight to discover the author Carax’s past and defend the future of his work. Curl up with this one by a bookshelf and light a candle—you’re in for a literary ride.
For the Introspective…
“Three Women” by Lisa Taddeo
The product of over a decade of immersive journalistic reporting, “Three Women” tells the story of three American women each at a different crossroads in their marriages, sexuality, and identity. There’s Sloane, a woman whose husband is only attracted to her when he watches her with someone else. Maggie, whose life is in shambles after a solicit affair with her high school English teacher. And there’s Lina. She craves intimacy desperately, but her husband won’t even kiss her. This is a perfect read for the New Year. It takes you deep into the minds of these three women and will have you reflecting on the relationships in your life as well as your relationship with closeness and intimacy. Not to mention Taddeo’s level of deep reporting is impeccable. She tells each woman’s story from their perspective with such specific, personal detail that it feels as if all three women are speaking to you directly.
For the Windswept Adventurer…
“The Luminaries” by Eleanor Catton
Set in a small town on the rugged coast of New Zealand circa 1866, Walter Moody has come to make his fortune in the country’s Gold Rush. On the night of his arrival he wanders into a pub where he finds 12 local men discussing a curious series of events. This one’s a bit of a doozie at 848 pages, but it’s entirely worth it. The plots unspools slowly, but deliciously. It’s an enigma of missing persons, hidden identities, and large fortunes—all told from the distinct perspectives of the 12 men, Moody, and a prostitute entrenched in the mystery. “The Luminaries” feels like you’re taking a chilly walk through the moors, Irish coffee in hand, while something tantalizingly eerie lurks in your wake. Not to mention Catton is an insightful descriptor and wordsmith. When one character mourns the impossibility of forgetting all of his old lovers, in Catton-speak, he gets lost “in that reflective maze of endless comparison, forever disappointed, forever turning back.” Exquisite.
For the Curious Skeptic...
“The Wonder” by Emma Donoghue
You might recognize Donoghue’s name from her other famous title “Room” which tells the story of an abducted woman living in a shed in her captor’s backyard, raising their child. “The Wonder” is a quieter novel, but it possesses the same sort of slow burning unease as its predecessor. In “The Wonder” young nurse Lib Wright is called upon to observe an enigma, one Anna O’Donnell who has claimed to have fasted for months. Tourists, religious zealots, and a journalist descend upon Anna’s small Irish town to witness what they claim to be a miracle. Lib isn’t so sure. But as she spends more time with Anna, and a tentative kinship sparks, the lines blur. Is Anna a miracle child? Or is something more sinister afoot? “The Wonder” is a psychological thriller for the dark days of winter. It’ll keep you enamored late into the night, spooked, and possibly a little chilly with suspense. But you’ll want to sit with the feeling until the end—that’s what a good reading blanket is for, right?
For the Romantic...
“Bel Canto” by Ann Patchett
This book. This. Book. Patchett (“State of Wonder,” “Commonwealth”) is truly a master of her craft. She weaves sentences together that build an image so clearly she may as well be installing a film reel in your brain. What better way to wile away a winter afternoon? “Bel Canto” is no exception. In South America, the vice-president opens his mansion to foreign diplomats, influencers, and a world renowned opera singer for a lavishly successful Japaneese businessman’s birthday. But what starts as an extravagant evening, turns horrific when 18 terrorists enter through the air conditioning ducts and take all the guests hostage. But this seemingly violent hostage situation breaks down in surprising ways. As they detain guests over a series of weeks, kept at a distance by countless language barriers, the captors and their hostages begin to find communion. Alliances, friendships, and even romances form—people take solace in the opera singer’s transcendent voice as well as each other’s company. That which begins in terror turns ultimately to a story about the idiosyncrasies of human connection forged in tight, tense spaces. Page 56

What’s in Season?
Fresh and Comforting Soup At the end of a busy day, or right smack in the middle of one, why not enjoy a delicious bowl of soup? While some soups are served cold, this is the season for warm soups. And with the variety of soups available, there is sure to be one that will satisfy your appetite. The history of soup goes far, far back to possibly 20,000 BC and was probably enjoyed even before clay containers became the norm. Through the years, the benefits of soup have been extolled and rightfully so. Soups have many health benefits. Vegetables slowly cooked in a broth retain much of their nutritional value and can be high in vitamins. Lean meats or seafood can add protein. Broth soups are low in fat; cream soups offer calcium and vitamin D. Added grains or pasta make a soup high in fiber. It is a good source of fluids and can keep you hydrated. As a main course, soups fill you up with fewer calories and create a feeling of fullness. Hot soups will warm your stomach, keeping you warm on those brisk, cool evenings here in Coronado. Soups can easily be made at home and adapted to your personal tastes. It’s a great make-ahead meal. No time to cook? Purchase some fresh made soups, or even open up a can. Soup is inexpensive to make or buy. Store in the refrigerator or freeze. Just reheat when you’re ready. This is a perfect meal to indulge in amongst all the holiday food this time of year.

Make your
Season Comfy and Cozy by Krysta Murray
Sometimes with the chaos of everyday life, the added stresses of military life, and holiday business, we all just need to take time to pause and be grateful. To take a moment, or a day, to reflect and relax and focus on the simple things. Fortunately, this can be done easily and almost anywhere you find yourself. The Danish have a word for a feeling of contentment, comfort and coziness that basically encompasses how I feel about winter and the holidays in general and that word is hygge (hoo-ga). Essentially, it is a word that cannot be translated into just a single word because it is a feeling of well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. Ideally, this should be a concept we all practice throughout the year, so consider it for your list of resolutions this year. What I love about hygge is that it requires very little to accomplish but can make a huge difference in one’s state of mind. Most likely every person at some time has experienced hygge and not even realized it, mostly because it is feeling we are all familiar with but a term we are not. So what does one need to create this feeling? Primarily it is about awareness of your environment and setting the ambiance. Simple items such as blankets, a worn in pair of sweatpants, candles, warm beverages, a fireplace, a book, board games, comfort foods or all of the above, can set the mood. Those are some basics for an indoor hygge environment. Creating a snuggly, comforting space. Connecting with nature is also an important aspect of hygge. This can be accomplished inside with views of nature out a window or decorating with indoor plants. If weather permits, and usually in Southern California this time of year it does, take a walk outside and breathe in fresh air, noting the scents and observing the sights around

Regardless of how you feel about taxes, you are still required to pay them. Every year, an estimated two million individuals and families overpay their federal income
Tax Questions You Should Ask Before the End of the Year Should I defer more into my retirement accounts? If you are employed, or have a spouse that is employed, one of the easiest ways to reduce your taxes is to contribute more into your pre-tax retirement accounts. account, as this choice can change your future tax liability substantially.
Do I qualify for any tax credits? Tax credits are the cream of the crop when it comes to tax savings because they are a dollar-for-dollar reduction from taxes owed. These credits are designed to incentivize taxpayers to accomplish a specific goal that the U.S. Government deems important. If you were involved in any of the following in 2019, you should ask your tax professional if

Ask your financial professional if you are close to a credit. Being close to a credit means your income is close to the income limits or the cut-off that would allow you to take advantage of the credit. If you are close, ask how you can reduce your income to

What is the best way to give to charity and receive a tax benefit? The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 may have changed the tax benefits when donating to your favorite charity. If you are now taking a standard deduction, then you may not be receiving a tax benefit when you give cash to charity. There are a couple of fixes that can help your situation. If you are over age 70, and you have retirement accounts, then you may qualify for a Qualified Charitable Distribution. This donation method will allow you to give your annual required minimum distribution to a charity of your choice directly and also receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your income, which will reduce your taxes. Another strategy is to open a Donor Advised Fund account. These accounts are like a personal foundation; you contribute to the account now, receive the tax benefit in the year you donate, and then you have the luxury of giving to any charity of your choice at any time in the future. A Donor Advised Fund may make sense for you if you regularly give to charity, because you can contribute a lump sum to it this year for your next few years of donations.
Does a Roth Conversion make sense for me? An often overlooked strategy is a Roth conversion. This strategy may help you transfer your retirement accounts that are taxed 100% as you take money out, to a tax-free retirement account such as a Roth IRA. This is beneficial because, once transferred over to the tax-free account, the investments inside the account will grow tax-free for future needs. A further benefit of a Roth Conversion is that Roth accounts aren’t subject to RMDs (forced taxable distribution from your retirement accounts), allowing you to keep your assets growing tax-free until you need them or until you pass them to your heirs. This strategy may be a great option if you are retired and have low taxes. It also makes sense if you are in a sabbatical year or college and have lower than normal income for the year. This strategy is not for everyone so consult with your financial professional to determine if they may be a good fit for you. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” This may be true, but as long as we are intentional and follow rational tax advice from a professional, we can accept the certainties of life with a bit more grace. ‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE GLOWING!’
$45 December spray tans!
About Last Month’s Cover For the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we thought about the warmth of being at home with loved ones and how we could put that into a photo. Gold was the color of the season when it came to November, at least according to our writer/stylist Denise Lyon. Gold lent to the inviting warmth we were wanting to portray on the cover.

We set up a few homey touches with a photo of the Del and some older books, a few of them Oz books. The red hues of the flowers in a gold-toned vase, gold pumpkins and magnolia leaves were nods to the autumn season.

But something was missing. The table was full, but we added small votive candles and lit them. Their ethereal glow created an inviting warmth that we found magical. We hope you all enjoyed your own warm and magical Thanksgiving.

Coronado and the Ill-fated LTA Dirigibles by Christina Bulow, Community Education Coordinator Following World War I, military aviation grew by leaps and bounds. By 1916, construction and testing began on lighter-than-air (LTA) dirigibles, or blimps, designed after the German Zeppelins that had been seen during the war. Coronado’s North Island made its case to become the permanent LTA station for the Pacific Fleet. These preparations made North Island the perfect landing point for LTAs, including the ill-fated USS Shenandoah. In January 1919 the North Island Commanding Officer began to push for Coronado to become a permanent LTA base. The first balloon hangar, Building 17, was constructed to house a blimp up to 250 feet long and 140 feet wide. Additional support buildings were added, including an expeditionary kite balloon hanger, hydrogen plant, gas holder, and blower hose. To celebrate, a barbecue and dance were held inside the hangar on April 13, 1919, before any dirigibles even arrived on North Island. By August 1919, the first non-rigid dirigible was shipped to North Island via freight. The twin-engine C-6 arrived damaged and immediately underwent repairs before it could be inflated. Only five qualified dirigible aviators were stationed on North Island. Lieutenant Roman J. Miller, an expert in dirigibles, set up a successful flight school for pilots and crew.
USS Shenandoah moored to the specially-built mooring mast on North Island. Coronado Historical Association Collection. The C-6, along with the dirigible B-18, was based out of North Island. These balloons helped with military exercises. The B-18 aided a Torpedo Flotilla exercise and exhibited great skill in locating and recovering torpedoes. Dirigibles also conducted promotional activities, such as when the C-6 and B-18 flew to Los Angeles to land at Goodyear Field. Despite the success, all LTA activity ceased at Coronado in August 1921. The permanent airbase was to be located across the country, and North Island would serve as a terminal point for LTA crafts as they passed through the West Coast. One LTA to pass through Coronado was the ZR-1 USS Shenandoah. The Shenandoah, her name meaning Daughter of the Stars, was the first of five large dirigibles operated by the Navy. The airship was constructed in 1919 in Lakehurst, New Jersey. It was 680 feet long and 78.7 feet at its widest point. The top speed was 60 mph and it could carry up to 33 tons. The Shenandoah completed the first transcontinental flight by

an LTA dirigible under the leadership of Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansdowne. The flight ended at North Island and moored

Dine. Shop. Play.
Two days later, the airship left for Camp Lewis and returned for a second visit on Oct. 22, 1924. She departed Coronado on Oct. 24 to return to Lakehurst. The Navy’s LTA dirigibles career would prove brief. On Sept. 2, 1925, USS Shenandoah departed Lakehurst on a tour to conduct fly-overs above 40 Midwestern

cities. As the airship entered Ohio, it ran into a line of storms. It was tossed about in updrafts until the ship broke apart. Of the 41-man crew and two passengers, only 29 of the crew survived. Following the Shenandoah incident and the crash of three of the four other airships over the next few years, the era of the LTA dirigibles came to an end. The Navy,
