HARPENDEN BANKING HUB OPENED
Harpenden Town Council has announced that the new Harpenden Banking Hub opened on 11th December 2024. This vital facility will initially open as an Interim Banking Hub at the Town Hall, on Leyton Road, while its permanent premises on the High Street is finalised.
Banking Hubs are centrally located, convenient spaces with professional, face to face counter services provided by all the major high street banks. The Town Council lead the campaign to establish a Banking Hub for close to three years, following the closure of Harpenden’s Banks. Its work included public engagement conducted in 2023 which highlighted that the lack of banks in the town has significantly impacted local people and businesses.
High street footfall has reduced, banking services are no longer accessible and banking customers are not receiving the services they require.
Residents, business, voluntary and community organisations are urged to use the interim Banking Hub in the same way as their own bank. Cash withdrawals, opening an account, paying in cheques, financial advice and all other services are available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
Earlier this month the Town Council announced that work to deliver the permanent Hub is ongoing and, as the local lead in its delivery, it is committed to ensuring its successful opening as soon as negotiations are completed.
Further information regarding the permanent Banking Hub location will be announced when agreements are in place.

Tourism in St Albans District has recovered from the impact of the pandemic with spending and overnight stays both showing marked increases.
A study was commissioned by St Albans City and District Council and St Albans BID on behalf of Visit Herts - Hertfordshire’s Destination Management Organisation.
It revealed there were 274,000 overnight stays recorded in the District last year - a rise of 3% on 2019, the year before Covid-19 hit the hospitality industry.
The report undertaken by Destination Research, an independent analytics agency, also determined that those overnight visitors contributed £76 million to the local economy, an increase of 14% on 2019.
Total visitor numbers also showed strong gains with 2.1 million people visiting the District in 2023, up 23% on the 2021 figure and at 96% of 2019 levels.
In addition, the overall value of tourism to the District reached £217 million in 2023, which is an increase of 3% on pre-pandemic levels.
Tourism also boosted local employment, and now supports 3,755 jobs across the District, up 6% on 2019 and 5% of total employment.
The study used the Cambridge Economic Impact Model to measure the volume and value of tourism within a destination, as well as the effect of visits and visitor expenditure on the local economy.

St Albans City and District Council has agreed the sale of Harpenden Public Halls to ChristChurch Harpenden (CCH) for use as a permanent building for their church. CCH is a diverse church with a regular Sunday morning congregation of over 300 people including 120 children and young people.
Councillor Paul de Kort, the Council’s Leader and Chair of the Strategy and Resources Committee, said:
“I am pleased that we have reached this agreement after an open market sale process and will obtain a substantial sum for the benefit of our residents.
The Halls provided Harpenden with a lively entertainment venue for many decades, but it had become clear we needed to replace it with a much more modern facility.
We are proud we did so with the opening of the magnificent Eric Morecambe Centre with its theatre, backstage equipment, function rooms, bars and other assets.
Following the closure of the Halls, we considered several options for the future of the site, including redeveloping it ourselves.
But due to changes in the wider economic climate, we decided to explore the sale of the freehold as that seemed the best way forward.
The sum raised will help reduce the Council’s borrowing as was originally envisaged when we embarked on the project to create new leisure and cultural facilities for the town.
I’m pleased that the sale will see the Public Halls continue to be used as a community building, although that was not one of the sale conditions. I am sure ChristChurch Harpenden will make good use of the building and wish them well with the task of refurbishing it.”

Riverbanks Awarded Best Clinic for the 4th Time: a Legacy of Excellence
by Ella-Louise Jain, January 2025
For 16 years, Riverbanks Clinic has been a beacon of excellence in the field of medical aesthetics, resulting in recognition as the Best Clinic in England four times, most recently in October 2024 at the prestigious Cutera Awards.
Founded by Dr Ravi Jain in 2008, Riverbanks was born from his vision to create a state-ofthe-art clinic on the doorstep of Harpenden, offering a plethora of expert-led treatments, removing the need to travel to London to access world-class expertise.
Since opening, Riverbanks has provided facial aesthetics, body contouring, skin care, antiageing and hair loss treatments to men and women across London and Hertfordshire. Many of the techniques and approaches used by the clinic’s practitioners are entirely unique. Dr Ravi Jain has pioneered the R-Lift®, the Harmony Consultation and the concept of Invisible Aesthetics®, which are now being adopted all around the world. Riverbanks was also the first clinic to offer the famous Infinite Threadlift in the UK.
The clinic also provides IV therapy for enhanced wellness and effective hair loss solutions, as well as bioidentical hormone management and the ME-BELLA treatment, designed to treat weak pelvic floor muscles and improve bladder control, particularly beneficial for those who have given birth or have prostate disease.
Education and continuous development remain at the heart of Riverbanks’ success. Dr Jain not only stays ahead of industry advancements but actively contributes to the field, sharing his knowledge with practitioners globally, which has enabled the clinic to remain at the forefront of aesthetic innovation.
At the core of the Riverbanks’ ethos is a drive to uphold the highest standards in ethical aesthetics, always holding the patient’s best interests and health as paramount and adhering to General Medical Council’s Good Medical Practice guidelines.
Looking ahead, Dr Jain envisions Riverbanks Clinic continuing to commit to excellence and broadening the focus of the clinic to include regenerative medicine and preventative treatments that promote healing and enhance patient wellness. This approach will see a greater offering of medical treatments including PRP for hair loss solutions, IV therapy and ME-BELLA for stress urinary incontinence.
Patients should therefore expect a holistic experience at Riverbanks Clinic. When you walk through the door, you enter a centre of excellence in both aesthetics and overall health, where patient wellness is put first.
Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?
As the foremost domestic glass replacement company in the UK for more than 18 years, Cloudy2Clear Windows are the leading name in the industry. There is now no need for you to risk your windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the street. You can join over 340,000 happy customers and replace your glass ethically and affordably. If you have a failed glass unit it may not provide you with the protection you need, or be as energy-efficient as it once was. Why not take a minute to check your home to see if any double glazing has failed? Taking action now can prevent future financial problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Stephen Moon it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for
a number of years. In addition since starting the business in 2005, Cloudy2Clear have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

Films TO L K OUT FOR!
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy - Released: February 14th
Renee Zellweger returns to her signature role as the lovelorn, and utterly loveable, Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. In the previous film Bridget Jones’ Baby, the title character gave birth to her son, the father being Bridget’s on-off love interest Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).
The latter is now tragically out of the picture and Bridget faces the end of her hedonistic singledom as middle-age looms. Unfortunately for her (but fortunately for us the viewers), Hugh Grant’s hilariously caddish Daniel Cleaver is about to re-enter the scene...
Snow White - Released: March 21st
Captain America: Brave New World Released: February 14th
Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues with Captain America: Brave New World as Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), formerly the Falcon, takes over the Captain America mantle from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
The fourth Captain America movie appears to be taking its cue from 2014’s acclaimed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, conveying the air of a paranoid conspiracy thriller as Wilson clashes with President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), later to become the rampaging Red Hulk.
Disney’s live-action remake machine continues apace with its glossy take on the groundbreaking 1937 animation.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves cemented Walt Disney’s house style after initially being written off as a folly – indeed, it won seven Oscars in a special Academy Awards presentation. Now, Rachel Zegler portrays the plucky Snow White while Gal Gadot plays the cackling Evil Queen who will stop at nothing to see the title character dead.
Minecraft Movie - Released: April 4th
The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld. Everyone’s favourite ‘Peaches’ vocalist Jack Black takes the lead role in this adaptation of the world-conquering video game franchise. Black plays Minecraft character Steve and Aquaman’s Jason Momoa plays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Will Minecraft mine the success of similar app adaptations like Angry Birds?

DRY JANUARY
Dry January is the perfect way to reset your relationship with alcohol. It only takes three weeks to break a habit, so this could be your route to happier, healthier drinking long-term.
Alcohol is linked with more than 60 health conditions, including liver disease, high blood pressure, depression and seven types of cancer. In fact, alcohol is the biggest cause of death for people aged 15-49 in the UK. Cutting back on alcohol reduces your risk of developing these conditions.
The UK’s top doctors (they’re called the Chief Medical Officers) recommend drinking no more than 14 units per week, spread over three or more days, and with at least two days off.
The good news is that Dry January is the perfect training ground for helping you cut down from February onwards!
Cutting down permanently is, for many people, very hard, because habits are hard to break. Dry January is an excellent way of learning what your habits are and how to break them, enabling you to cut down longer-term.
You can think of it as a bootcamp for drinking self-control!
Here’s a few of the benefits:
1. You may lose weight
It’s no secret that alcohol is loaded with calories. At 7 calories per gram, a standard glass of wine (5 ounces) can contain about 130 calories, and a serving of beer (12 ounces) nearly 330 calories.
2. You’ll get deeper sleep
It’s true that a nightcap can help you doze off faster, but according to a 2013 study, alcohol disrupts the most restorative phase of sleep that occurs later in the night.
3. You could kick a cold faster
Alcohol can suppress your immune system, which might hinder your ability to fight off an illness. Even one night of too much drinking—in this case, drinking until you’re drunk—can interfere with your body’s ability to produce cytokines, or chemicals that help fight off infections.
4. Your skin might look younger
Alcohol can act as a diuretic, which can increase fluid loss and lead to dehydration, possibly damaging the skin, plus, when people stop drinking, they get more calories from foods; this tends to improve their vitamin intake, which can also make their skin appear healthier.
5. You’ll get better at resisting peer pressure
The participants in a Dry January study, not only drank less later in the year, but also felt more confident turning down drinks.
6. More money in your pocket
The average person spends £50,000 on booze in their lifetime

Start Fresh in 2025: Boost Your Health and Wellness with Acupuncture
As the New Year begins, why not explore a natural way to support your health? If you struggle with fatigue, chronic pain, menopausal symptoms, stress, infertility, headaches, or long-term health challenges, acupuncture may be a transformative option for you.
Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, involves the gentle insertion of thin, sterile needles at specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow. Modern research shows that acupuncture can help regulate the nervous system, improve blood circulation, enhance tissue healing, and strengthen the immune system.
It also triggers the release of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins - natural chemicals that elevate mood, boost energy, improve sleep quality, and support hormonal balance. Beyond its physical benefits, acupuncture offers a deeply relaxing experience that restores balance and reduces stress. When performed by a trained professional, it’s a safe and effective approach to wellness.

BLEEDING A RADIATOR IN TWO STEPS
1. Give it a feel
Turn on the heating and then go around the home and feel the radiators. Be careful not to burn yourself! Check for any cold patches and listen out for odd gurgling sounds. If a radiator is cold at the top, then it needs bleeding. If it’s not, then just leave it be – you don’t want to bleed a radiator that doesn’t need bleeding.
If you decide you need to bleed the radiators, remember to turn the heating off before moving on to the next step.
2. Release the pressure
• Keep your old towel and container handy for each radiator you go to
• Locate the valve and use your radiator key (or screwdriver) to open it by turning it anticlockwise. If it’s tough to open, use the cloth to get a better grip
• Only open it slightly until you hear the hissing noise – that’s air escaping
• Once the sound stops and water starts streaming out, make sure you catch the water in the container
• Now it’s time to re-tighten the valve
• Clean up any excess and move on to the next one!
Once you’ve finished, you’ll not only be an expert in bleeding radiators, but your home will almost be back to full heating efficiency!

Today we have started to celebrate the beauty of them and with number of beautiful designs you can see why!

With such a huge choice of designs, finishes and colours, you can have a radiator placed in pretty much any area or space in your home without any problems. That awkward space in your hallway, the small downstairs loo that nobody uses because it’s minus 15 degrees
or that spare room that only your guests have to endure, now can become enjoyable spaces.

The Copper Comeback!
Copper is certainly no newcomer to the world of design, but after a long season of cool metallics and chromes dominating interiors, this warm material has started to reemerge.
It’s almost impossible to believe that copper is back after 15 years of being out of favour, but that’s the feeling by leading designers for 2025.
From Kitchen Worktops and taps to plug sockets to Lights the copper comeback is on! We’ve come full circle and are using warm metals again, as well as warm colours, so jump on the Copper train when considering a new look at home!

HELPING WILDLIFE THROUGH THE WINTER MONTHS
There might not be so many animals out and about to spot at this time of year but with little effort, you can make it an easier season for them.
1.
Leave the leaves
An easy way to look after wildlife in winter is actually to do less with your garden.
Avoid pruning berry or fruit-bearing bushes or trees in your garden, as these provide indispensable food for birds over the next few months. Allow leaves, twigs and sticks to pile up under hedges or in borders. This can provide a cosy home for hedgehogs and dormice to hibernate. The leaves will also shelter insects – which will become food for those insects as the leaves decompose. If you do need to move piles of leaves or wood, especially to light a bonfire, make sure you check for small mammals first.
2. Finding food
The winter months are especially tough for animals that don’t hibernate, such as birds, squirrels, badgers and foxes. They have to keep their body temperature up by eating sufficient food, but it is scarce at this time of year. You can be their lifeline by making or buying them food.
Fat balls, sunflower seeds and (unsalted) peanuts are appreciated by many birds. You can put these up in a tree, or in a standalone birdfeeder if you want to stop the squirrels from getting there first. Birdfeeders make great gifts for birdwatchers or general wildlife lovers.
3. Don’t forget the water
It’s also important to supply wildlife with water, especially in freezing temperatures. A plant saucer with a few differentlysized stones in it will allow a variety of birds to bathe. If you place the saucer at ground level, many other animals will also be able to drink from it. Make sure you break the ice if it freezes. If you have a pond, and the surface is frozen, you may want to melt or break some of the ice to allow animals to drink from it. Melt the ice by placing a hot saucepan on the surface, or gently poking a few holes. Avoid breaking the ice with any force, or by pouring boiling water in, as this could harm any fish, frogs or newts living inside. Ensure you clean birdfeeders and saucers before refilling them, to avoid spreading diseases.

Recycle your Christmas Tree in aid of charity
The Hospice of St Francis is providing a hassle-free Christmas tree collection service straight from your door! You don’t even need to be in on the day. Simply leave your tree outside your house the weekend the collection starts.
From 4th January 2025, teams of our fabulous volunteers will be out in and around Harpenden and St Albans collecting your trees. For a donation, your tree will be recycled, and all the money raised will contribute to the over £6 million the Hospice needs every year to fund its free care. Generously supported by Veolia, the Harpenden Lions Club and St Albans Lions Club, the Hospice’s tree collection service has raised a truly tree-mendous £146,000 over the last 7 years. That’s enough to fund our community nursing service for almost 5 months or enough to fund one of our Inpatient Unit nurses for 3 and a half years!
The Hospice’s care, which supports over 2,000 people, will never come at a cost to the patient or their loved ones. The community are at the heart of what the Hospice does, and the support of fundraising initiatives like this are vital to ensure the free care continues. In an average year the Berkhamstedbased Hospice supports around 150 patients and their families from the St Albans and Harpenden area. Arranging collection is easy, just visit stfrancis.org.uk/ treecollection and leave the rest to the Hospice!
BRIDGE VALLEY
W ONDERFUL WISTERIA!
Gardening experts recommend that your wisteria be pruned twice a year – first in January or February and later in July or August.
Pruning wisteria in winter will help to sort out any tangled stems before the growing season when leaf buds begin to open. If you’ve trained your wisteria to grow along a fence, pergola, wall, or arch, February’s also a good time to do any maintenance to these structures or add any extra supports that are needed. This can be much more convenient than doing it later once the plant is heavy with new growth.
Pruning techniques will vary depending on whether your wisteria is young or mature. For example, young wisteria stems can be cut back to around 75cm and untangled from side branches. The rest of the plant can then be cut back by one-third. In contrast, mature wisteria plants can be cut back to just two or three buds to keep the plant neat and tidy ahead of the upcoming growing season.

DEMISTING YOUR WINDSCREEN
Demisting your windscreen is a necessity before setting off, not doing so can impede your vision while driving which means you will be driving illegally.
The cause of your car windscreen misting up is actually down to water vapour in the atmosphere that occurs when your body heats the air inside the cabin – as does your breath –increasing the amount of moisture it can hold. This means when it comes into contact with your windscreen it cools and condenses, forming a ‘mist’ that can make winter driving a challenge.
Here’s how to clear your windscreen in double-quick time.
1. Heater – Start the heater off cold and direct at windscreen and windows, then slowly increase the temp.
2. Air-Con Turn on the air-con to keep the atmosphere dry.
3. Windows – If you don’t have air-con roll down the windows.
4. Climate Control – If there’s a handy setting for demisting your windscreen, USE IT! For more information & some handy tips visit: www.rac.co.uk
