Director’s Statement

In May of this year I went with my partner, brother and sisterin-law to New York; the epicenter of the art world for a reconnaissance trip to rejuvenate my soul.

Also joining our fold of artists is Kate Bergin, releasing fabulous limited editions. Her Tabletop Variations are composed with the complexity of Bach’s own Goldberg Variations; just sublime.

After being in the art world for 30 years, I still get inspired by what I see every day, giving gratitude constantly. I am writing this dialogue as I walk the streets in New York. Yesterday we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was like a kid in a lolly shop!

The magazine features articles about how to master the elusive French Hang and What’s Hot in the Art World, by Gallery One’s Karen Spooner.

In New York I spent three hours with the inspirational Lia De Feo, Vice President of Getty Images which further cemented FINEPRINT co’s relationship with this international company. Artists talk about immersion. Our very dear friends David and Yuge Bromley slept on site at West Village when they painted the old Ice cream factory (see page 32). That is what we would like to offer you with FINEPRINT co, immersion in the art world, the experience of diverse artwork and photography. The team at FINEPRINT co are very proud to bring you this new collection of artwork. This quarter we are proud to say we are releasing the most beautiful limited editions and also wallpaper featuring the work of Diana Watson and soon David Bromley!

In the last couple of months we have opened in New Zealand, bringing further stockists into our family. As I write, the printers at our sister company Corporate Art are madly printing canvases for The Westin Hotel in Brisbane. The selected artist for the project was Jo Olive and mixing along side her work in each room is photography by Ross Spencer. It is never a dull moment at our HQ at Burleigh on the Gold Coast. I am very proud of our hard working team. It is not about one person as it is a collaboration of artists, photographers, graphic designers and our clients that endeavor to bring The Total Art Solution.

The earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word is constructed from Greek petra, meaning "stone" and chor, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods. Dawn, the newness slowly rouses, the smell of the earth permeates the wind, the freshness of the rain just fallen lingers in droplets on the sunlit grass, nostrils filled with this life. The velvety earth is luscious and rich, its weight found in sentience. The hues saturate senses and evoke emotions, deep and tranquil at times and light and airy at others. Here we can live, here we can be, promising the meandering of collective being. Each individual yet all in unity, all connected. The juxtaposing nature of nature. Air fuels fire, water douses fire, water swallows earth, earth is held by space, air makes life in space possible. The interconnectivity of life and the integration of the senses.

Petrichor, take a breath. This overarching feeling of textural engagement goes from velvet, to lava, gossamer wings of dragonflies, to the crunch of different terra underfoot, think visuals that evoke emotions and senses. Can the visual make you smell or hear? Elemental themes, fire, earth, wind, space, water and all the permutations that those allow for. From flora to fauna, the scenes of nature, the micro the macro, the detail and simplified. 5

KATE BERGIN

“Brahms’ Variations are better than mine, but mine were written before his. “ Franz Liszt

The Variations by Bach however are at play in these fantastically fanciful works. At first glance it is impossible to overlook the vitality of Kate Bergin’s compositions. Animals seem poised to leap from the canvas, birds to take flight. And then, little by little, more details emerge: an upturned teacup, a pair of spectacles, a tiny revolver and teaspoons - so many teaspoons! - some balanced precariously on tabletop edges, others raised aloft trophy-like and yet more attached to beaks, horns and feet by dainty little pieces of string. 10

Upon a tabletop draped with a white cloth, Bergin directs her creatures in a playful series of ‘tableaux vivants’, uniting the feral and the domestic, the everyday and the exotic. Affectionately describing them as her ‘tabletop variations’, Bergin explains, ‘The Goldberg Variations, JS Bach’s celebrated work for harpsichord, is a much-loved and frequent accompaniment to my painting. A series of diverse melodic lines unified by a single bass line and chordal structure, Bach’s Goldberg Variations closely reflect my own approach to composition. These tabletop variations transpose the musical form onto the visual plane - the tabletop provides the ‘bass line’ and the birds, animals and various household objects become the “variations”.’ Bergin’s artistic influences are vast and varied ranging from 17th century Dutch and Spanish still life painting to Australia’s John Brack all having a profound impact on her work. Much like Brack’s depiction of inanimate objects, such as knives, forks and pencils, to reflect contemporary human themes, Bergin’s paintings are strongly grounded in the here and now.

Interlocking ideas from current affairs, history, poetry and music, her tabletop variations represent a journey, a hunt perhaps for meaning, through the squawking and rummaging and all distraction of our daily existence. Kate Bergin’s works revel in the unusual, the precarious and the unexpected. Far from ‘still’, these are paintings that quiver with movement, laughter and life - in all its variations. The previous pages showcase the limited editions of her work that we have on offer, with only a run of ten prints per work. They are available beautifully framed as per Kate’s specific instructions and have been named and signed by the Artist herself. A rare and beautiful edition to any collection. Their sizes and any further information about the works can be found in our Catalogue Index, or more comfortably on our website fineprintco.com Also found on our website are the poetic and insightful essays by Kate about each work, worth the read!

DIANA WATSON

“The Rose is without an explanation; She blooms, because She blooms.” Angelus Silesius

As an only child, Watson was happy in her own company growing up and spent endless hours drawing, painting, learning to sew and making tiny sculptures. “I am driven to paint, to work or to create something that has meaning’ she says. ‘Being creative is who I am.” That childhood creativity led to an art education under eminent West Australian artist Robert Juniper. Watson then launched her own art career after working for several years in fashion. “I had a boutique that provided a wonderful necessity to travel to Italy regularly,” she says. “This was a major influence on the painting I am doing now.” That painting comprises exquisitely melancholic still life ruminations on nature, flowers, death and renewal. Evoking a sense of romance and abundance akin to 16

the early masters, Watson’s paintings have made her one of Australia’s most popular still-life artists with numerous exhibitions to her name and work in private collections in the UK, Italy, Germany, Dubai and America. “I capture and record the fleeting beauty of everyday life,” she says. “There is a need to share this beauty in a world that is not without its foreboding. My hope is this imagery provides the viewer with a sense of hope and peacefulness.” Diana is busy working on exclusive paintings for FINEPRINT co and our sister company Gallery One, these will be available very soon as Editions of 20, watch this space!

“Love is the flower you’ve got to let grow.” John Lennon

Stephanie Têtu is an emerging self taught artist originally from Montreal, Canada and is based in Sydney where she burst onto the art scene just last February with a first show at Richard Martin Art in Woollahra. Her thoughtful studies bring the viewer a sense of intimacy and enchantment. Stephanie manages to capture the ephemeral beauty and fragility of flowers and create a sense of drama as well as delicacy, a skill that belies her relatively young career. “I love painting flowers, they symbolise sex and femininity, the cycles of life. Viewing them in large scale, you can’t deny their fleshiness. You discover intimate details revealed in their full splendour.” 18

James Ainslie

You can take for granted that people know more or less what a street, a shop, a beach, a sky, an oak tree look like.A Tell them what makes this one different. Neil Gaiman

20

“As an artist my paintings are often a direct result of a location. It is the colours, textures, smells, patterns, in fact the essence of a place that inspires my images. The interpretation may be realistic, but often may develop more abstractly.” James Ainslie’s preferred palette is acrylic paint on paper, with the occasional use of mixed media. His forte is modern realism, although he also produces abstract art. “Frar tahylie a wegite goer lorem heye”

Ainslie’s paintings resonate with an inherent passion for the country’s unique beauty, particularly the sandy dunes and reflective waters of Queensland and South Australia.

matter, David’s work is enduringly figurative, daringly coloured and executed with a graphic intention that is striking and memorable. David’s practice has extended to significant work in sculpture, creating in both bronze and resin to bring to life the characters imbued within his paintings. His work, both in painting and sculpture have become cornerstone pieces for several of the key interior projects undertaken by Bromley & Co in recent years. We are also proud to announce that FINEPRINT co will soon have Bromley and co wallpaper. Completely bespoke, these pieces are standout and will be a bold statement in any space. We are also featuring the work recently done by David at West Village, Where he painted an entire ice cream factory! Outside and in, with astounding results, Bromley and co’s space in West Village is very unique and we are proud to have limited edition prints showcasing key works in the project.

Born in 1960 in Sheffield, England, David Bromley immigrated to Australia with his family in 1964 and emerged as a painter in the mid 1980s. notoriety in Australia and internationally. He has exhibited on nearly every continent including Asia, Europe, Africa and America. In his practice, David has developed distinct themes and unique styles of painting; his best known are the nude female portraits and children’s series, but he often explores with various mediums and imagery that portray a certain whimsy. WHAT’S HOT IN THE AUSTRALIAN ART WORLD By Karen Spooner

we strive for in artist representation, fine art sales and building strong client-gallery relationships. In recent times, I have seen a lot of changes in the commercial art gallery sector and art world. In particular, I have seen a more astute awareness of an artists’ investment value by our clients. Clients want to see financial results in the artists they decide to purchase and this does influence our selection of represented artists. We can’t afford to be indulgent in our own personal aesthetics or artistic preferences when it comes to selecting artwork. We have to keep our clients and potential clients purchasing history in mind, their own exposure and knowledge and artistic tastes in mind while keeping a strong aesthetic vision and policy for the Gallery –one that is importantly consistent with the broader art world trends and sales. We are successful in establishing an artistic and creatively diverse, award-winning, highly collectible selection of represented artists. Our top tier artists are recognised nationally and internationally in the art world and hold regular exhibitions, some frequently hold sell-out exhibitions with Gallery One. A sell-out exhibition is a result of hard work, clever marketing strategies and most importantly the skills to create an engaging and uplifting experience with the buyers, many first-time, and known collectors of art. Social media is a useful tool for this purpose especially among a younger demographic who are art enthusiasts, but it is the interaction our clients experience when they are in the Gallery that holds the most value and influence over their purchasing decisions.

I have been working in Australian galleries for 30 years. Eight and half of those years have been at Gallery One, Southport, QLD. As the founding Gallery Manager of Gallery One it has been my favourite journey especially in being able to select the artists that we represent, a task enjoyed alongside Gallery One Director Leanne Pearce. As well, you need a great team to run a gallery and I work closely with Lucy Miles, Fine Art Consultant, to achieve the results 30

Our top tier artists who are achieving in Australian Art Awards, collectability and engage with a commercial audience who purchase and collect their artworks. Dean Home - A career that spans almost 30 years , Dean’s bold and opulent paintings depict various chinoisserie, magnolia flowers, pomegranate fruit and Chinese calligraphy brushes that interweave the image between still life and landscape genres. His work is held

in numerous public and private collections including National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Leeuwin Estate Collection and the Perth City Collection.

LUMINOUS FOREST SCENE Dean Home 75cm x 104cm Acrylic on Watercolour Paper

Kate Bergin -Highly sought after, with seven consecutive sell-out shows, Kate Bergin has established her reputation creating paintings where the exotic meets the everyday in a world that teeters on the edge of the possible. Kate has been selected as a Sulman Prize finalist at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1995, 2011 and 2013 and is the winner of the 2010 Albany Art prize. In 1994 Margaret Olley gifted one of Kate’s works in the Art Gallery of NSW. Kathrin Longhurst - Growing up behind the iron curtain in East Germany (East Berlin) and then relocating to Sweden, this jarring transition from a totalitarian regime to democracy has sparked Kathrin’s passion for exploring concepts of freedom of speech and propaganda. Her portraiture has recently received many accolades and award selections and in 2018 Kathrin was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize for Portraiture, AGNSW, with a self portrait. Winner of the ‘People’s Choice in the 2017 Portia Geach Portrait award, Kathrin’s work is collected widely in Australia and overseas. Diana Watson – Diana’s elegant still-life paintings have earned the Sydney-based artist great repute locally, and now it seems the rest of the world is

catching on, with selected works set to appear on the silver screen, in Hollywood production Collateral Beauty, as well as in celebrity chef Rick Stein’s new restaurant in Marlborough, Wiltshire (UK). Her paintings resonate with a sense of warmth, nostalgia, depth and intrigue – at once beguiling and comforting. Cynthia Breusch – Cynthia’s atmospheric paintings convey other world timelessness and evoke universal themes of meaning and purpose, memory, dreams and the transcendent. The art critic Elwyn Lynn wrote of her work, ‘What a sensitive, quiet, restrained artist in Cynthia Breusch....she can give mystery and fleeting significance to the most mundane. Even the darkest works have an engaging luminosity and richness of seductive hues.... she can exact tenderness without exaggeration.’ Cynthia has held over 35 solo exhibitions around Australia, Tokyo and California. Cynthia has been a finalist in many art prizes including the 2018 Salon des Refuses, 2017 Portia Geach Memorial Award, the 2018 Tattersalls Club Landscape Art Prize and the Paddington Art Prize. Her work is held in both public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

HEROIC DAY Cynthia Breusch 91cm x 110cm Acrylic on Board

Ken Done - Done takes inspiration from diverse sources - the ebullience of the sea and sky, the transcendent emotions of a quiet garden, aboriginal art, Japanese poetry, the urban shout of Sydney, where he makes his home - but the sensibility that underlies his work is uniquely his own. This original art has become the creative source of a unique and now famous Australian brand. It began with a small run of t-shirts printed with a beautifully simple, bold drawing of Sydney Harbour. This original image caught the attention of Sydneysiders and visitors alike and has gone on to become an icon of Sydney and an icon of Done. Ken Done has been a finalist in the Archibald, Wynne, Sulman and Dobell prizes at The Art Gallery of NSW and the Blake prize at The Casula Powerhouse Centre, Sydney. Ken Done’s work is held in public and private collections in Australia and Overseas.

Ken Johnson – With an art career that spans over 40 years, Johnson’s imaginative and grand contemporary paintings of the Australian, Italian and Spanish landscape represent a fusion of recent encounters and familiar travels. His coastal and outback representations characteristically incorporate flowing curvilinear and geometric forms with a keen sense of fractured light. Man–made and natural phenomena pervade his landscapes creating both a moody and serene feeling. Johnson has been a finalist in many well known art prizes including the Archibald and Wynne prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW. His work is held in important private collections including JP Morgan Bank, Rothschilds, Malcom turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia, Rupert Murdoch etc as well as Tweed Regional Gallery, Newcastle Regional Gallery and the Australian Embassy in Moscow.

“Wherever you are in the world, there’s always something about the Australian light. There’s something about the sharpness of it, something about the clarity of it, something about the colours of Australia. And, hopefully, something optimistic about Australian painting too.” Ken Done

David Bromley – David Bromley emerged as a painter in the mid 1980’s and early in his career held solo exhibitions in Sydney and Adelaide. Bromley has developed a distinctive style infusing his colourful graphic works of birds, butterflies with an unexpected painterly application of silver and gold leaf, layered with delicate floral motifs. Over time, Bromley’s nudes have become iconic works on the Australia art scene, exploring the provocative allure of ‘models’ and their seemingly inaccessible beauty and charm – Bromley has developed three distinct and unique styles of painting- the female portrait, the Children’s series and birds and butterflies. Bromley has been an Archibald Prize Finalist numerous times, a finalist in the Doug Moran portrait prize and the prestigious Moet & Chandon award. He is one of Australia’s most successful artists and is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

Ken Done - Paintings you probably haven’t seen before 2017 exhibition - Gallery One

Paul Haggith - Paul is a contemporary realist painter whose work is based on water, landscape, figurative and cityscape themes. Haggith’s paintings represent the water and light so accurately that they closely resemble the observed world. It is a realist technique that Haggith has mastered over the years spending a great deal of time painting directly from life and in the outdoors –‘en plein air’. Most recently Paul collaborated on the 2017 ‘The 5 Lands Walk Mural’ for the Crowne Plaza, Terrigal and ‘First contact’ at Tuggerah Lakes Paul was shortlisted for the 2007 Wynne Prize for Australian Landscape Painting at the Art Gallery Of NSW for his painting “The Rising Tide”. Paul was also selected to hang in the 2009 and 2010 Wynne Prizes and the 2014 Sulman prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. His work is held in both public and private collections both in Australia and overseas.

RETURNING TO SECRET BAY Jennifer Riddle 33cm x 33cm Acrylic on Wood

32

Jennifer Riddle - Jennifer’s commitment to painting is driven by the pastoral land and sea that surrounds her on Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula. The low ambient Southern light from this region, is captured in Riddle’s work with her sublime shrouds that soften and filter the clarity from the land. It’s the subtle and evocative nature of this light that Riddle has characterised and encapsulated within her work. The vistas are transformed in a poetic fusion between the land and the sky, offering a place of spiritual refuge, solace and tranquillity.Jennifer is a finalist in the 2017 Paddington Art Prize and 2015 Glover Art Prize and was awarded ‘People choice and Children’s Choice Winner in the 2017 Glover Art Prize. She was selected for the 2016 Salon des Refuses, S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney and was awarded Winner of the Mornington Peninsula acquisitive Art Prize, Red Hill. Her work is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas including The Parliament House of Australia, Canberra, ACT, Mornington Peninsula Shire, VIC and Epworth Hospital , Melbourne, VIC. Christopher McVinish - Contemporary realist painter Christopher McVinish is a passionate painter of light not just space and form. It is essentially this element of his work, which invites us to see the commonplace as special and suffused with potential. While McVinish’s urban landscapes tell intriguingly oblique narratives revealing contemporary life as a kind of half-remembered dream, his still life paintings convey a reverence for the Dutch Masters and draw attention to how memory and a sense of the divine can be evoked by ‘ordinary’ objects. Christopher is a finalist and award winner in the 2013 Holding Redlich People’s Choice Award, Finalist 2017 Salon des Refuses (Archibald Prize) S.H Ervin Gallery, with his portrait of actor Colin Friels . He is represented in public and private collections including the Gold Coast City Council, Toowoomba City Council ; Griffith University ; Redcliffe City Council ; Maroochy Shire Council ; County Court of Victoria (portrait commission of Chief Judge Desmond Whelan) ; Australasian College of Surgeons (portrait commission of ‘08 –‘09 President) ; University of the Sunshine Coast to name a few.

Stephen Glassborow - Stephen’s objective is to give classical figurative bronzes a more contemporary edge via a process he fondly calls ‘slice and dice’. Through the action of construction and deconstruction he transposes the reality of a piece, creating an object rather than a subject. By either slicing or cutting up the figure and adding bold colours to what is usually a dark medium, Stephen objectifies the sculpture and creates his own unique, contemporary look He is represented in public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas including Hilton, Shanghai, China ; Shangri-la hotels Shanghai & Bangkok ; Pasir Ris Centre, Singapore ; Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur ; Crown Casino, Melbourne ; Qantas, Melbourne ; Walker Corporation, Sydney ; State Chambers, Sydney ; Hilton Hotel, Soeul, Korea ; Sheraton on the Park, Sydney ; Star City Casino, Sydney ; and McFarlane Burnett Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne.

FISH MARKET Christopher McVinish 62cm x 76cm Oil on Linen

Craig Parnaby - Craig Parnaby creates a unique visual iconography of coastal living. His imagery pays homage to the architectural forms and easygoing lifestyle of the urban coastal landscape. Craig’s perspective is positive, youthful and essentially humanist in its celebration of life’s simple pleasures. Parnaby’s strong sense of colour and form capture everything we love about the beauty of the coastline and the pleasure of being near the water. The tonal variations of umber beach figures in contrast to the turquoise sea and raspberry reds and oranges of bathers’ beach apparel create warmth that glows on the canvas. Craig’s work is held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and overseas. “One day I suddenly realised that an object could tell a story inside a story by providing a pictorial boundary. On further reflection I saw that an object like a decorated bowl could provide a nexus, become an embodiment of a range of cultural elements that could extend into history, nature, society and psychology – address the entire mindscape.” Dean Home

Suey McEnnally - Suey is renowned for her large, luminous, light filled landscapes that entice the viewer with a richness of texture, line and mood. Mastering the luxurious medium of oil pastel, McEnnally covers the picture plane with sweeping gesture - building up layers and delineating space as she creates enormous energy across the surface. Deep Prussian blues, opalescent whites and turner golds are hand created with pigment mixed with mica and temper. Whilst her Australian flowering deserts twinkle like stars in the desert sky, the strength of her line recalls Japanese calligraphy and woodblock print. Suey is a finalist in many prestigious art prizes including the Dobell and Sulman at the AGNSW, The Blake Prize, The Paddington Art Prize and the Manning and Country Energy Prizes. Suey is a five times finalist, Peoples choice winner in 2006 and Winner in 2012 in the Paddington Art Prize for Australian landscape and also a Winner of the Eco and Hunters Hill Art prizes

Mel Brigg - Mel Brigg has been built an impressive career in his art practice over the past 30 years. Across several continents his work is impressively held in significant embassy, government and corporate collections. Brigg states “I am moved by the complexities of the human condition, the vastness of our beautiful country, the mix of cultures, and the spirituality of our nomadic indigenous people and enjoy sharing my thoughts, through painting, with those who expect a work to have some meaning, a connection, that moves them…’. Mel’s work is held in public and private collections both in Australia and overseas including SA Embassies in Singapore, Canada and Belgium,Queensland State Government; Grain Corporation, Sydney. Housing Loans, Insurance Loan Sydney; Sister of St Joseph, North Sydney; Amnesty International, Victoria; Opus Communications, Australia.

Goompi Ugerabah – Goompi and the last few generations of his family were born and bred in the Ngnarangwul tribal area (Gold Coast) and the Minjungbal tribal area (Tweed Heads) . The stories of Goompi’s tribe are expressed in detailed intricate dot patterns and fluid line work combining neutral tones with the vivid and colourful hues found in the lush rainforests of the Gold Coast hinterland. Goompi’s work is found in collections such as HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark, The CIA in Virginia, US and SAAB Defence and Security, Australia and John Deere Pty Ltd. Leans is a 23 year old artist based in Brisbane, Australia. Through his work he strives to fabricate an entity that can be seen by the viewer on numerous occasions and enjoyed in alternative ways on each visit. The way in which Leans creates his artwork is much like an ecosystem. There is no plan. There are only reactions and evolutions on what came before. Starting with one element, the piece adapts and unfolds. Colour and form must interact with each other until there is harmony between everything.

Pamela Honeyfield “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Aristotle

Pamela says; “I would best describe my work as digestible abstract, a landscape with hints of the obvious. I work on mostly large scale canvas and linen in oils and also enjoy working on paper and board in mixed media. My work attempts to capture the mood, atmosphere and raw energy of places traveled and experienced. I rely on memory to recreate scenes and play with colour to entice the viewer and evoke a response. I don’t always have set rules for painting, the work will often dictate my next move and as we enter this dance and relationship I allow the colour and the movement of marks and shapes to play and interact. There are many variables when creating a work and you have to be willing to lose and regain images until it’s resolved. The best marks made and paintings created are when I seemingly disappear for a while in my work, and when I return I know that I have had some kind of ‘happening’ with the canvas.”

JO OLIVE

“What I dream of is an art of balance.” Henri Matisse

Home SKU - AE-JO-003

An artist and multidisciplinary maker from Northern N.S.W Australia. Her work is characterised by an enduring interest in the mapping of place, the fugitive nature of memory and the documentation of her emotional and historical connection to land. Her work favours intuitive mark-making, abstraction and the automatism of line. Largely self-taught, Olive’s work is an intensely personal, cathartic process in which visual elements are simultaneously lost and found through the physicality of scratching, sanding, puncturing, concealing and disclosing. Heavily concerned with process, these works ultimately produce a palimpsest, a recording of time. “As a maker, I am also able to interpret elements of my arts practice into utilitarian objects that transform the everyday, objects such as textiles and letterpress paper-goods.” 44

Fran Miller “Instinctively I enjoy taking photographs that leave the viewer with more questions than answers. I am a surfer and I am passionate about the ocean, but I crave creating pieces that explore moods and feelings rather than being solely documentation, whilst still using surfing and the ocean as my medium. I take diverse and somewhat incoherent inspiration from a wide spectrum of artists such as Caravaggio, Bernini and Munch as well as photographers like James Welling and John Chiara. Going forward, I am truly excited to test and explore the evolution of photography in surfing, and hopefully leave my audience perplexed, questioning and reflective.

“The painter constructs, the photographer discloses.” Susan Sontag

Spending many hours immersing himself in the natural environment, Ross Spencer captures the special effects of light that are crucial to the colours and patterns of nature. Drawing on emotion and sensitivity underscored by a fine sense of composition and keen awareness in observing the elements rather than the broad landscape, Ross has created an extensive portfolio of Australian images where he transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary; photography becomes art. 58

His passion to merge art and photography has recently led him to develop his unique style of ‘Ethereal Abstract’ images. These images are taken in-camera using various techniques with only minor software adjustments. The more difficult it is for the viewer to determine if it is a photo or watercolour painting, the more successful he considers the image. This style, when printed on Fine Art and other specialty papers, is particularly suitable as art for installation in most project types.

Ross Spencer is also featured in a separate catalogue found on our website, with his wide array of work. We have curated a catalogue of Ross’ work from his ZenFolio from EcoArt website, please see the website for more of these spectacular images. Ross Spencer has been a mainstay at Corporate Art and FINEPRINT co and his work has been featured in many large scale projects.

THE FRENCH HANG Although very on-trend right now, the French hang actually originated in 17th century Parisian cafes, where struggling artists such as Renoir and Matisse and other art graduates would hold public exhibitions. They would have to hang their paintings from floor to ceiling to fit them all in the small cafes and salons. It resulted in some very well dressed cafe walls full of small canvases that made for an energetic mix with plenty of colour and life! There are many ways to approach a French hang. Some like to have a common theme running throughout the entire hang such as a colour or a subject matter, but many like to approach it with a no rules, no holds barred school of thought creating a rarefied pinboard of sorts. The best thing about hanging your artwork in this way is that you can work on it organically adding to it until your eyes are content and your walls full! To avoid mayhem here are some rules of thumb when creating your own French hang: Start with five artworks. Any fewer and the pieces wont have enough substance on your walls. Even if you plan on progressively adding to 60

your hang you will still need to start with a solid base number of pieces to avoid it looking lazy or lost. Before you begin, decide whether your framed pieces will have the same size or colour of frame or if your are going to mix it all up. Either works beautifully but you do need to decide this important piece of information from the outset, otherwise it will become difficult to build your hang in the future. Always remember that there isn’t any need for your frames to match, thats entirely up to you, however to make the composition more appealing to the eye, blend the colour and rhythm of your artwork with objects around the

room such as a lounge, lamp or table - ideally something more permanent that you’re not likely to change up very often. Choose an anchor piece for your hang. This is your centre work. It doesn’t need to be particularly impressive in its subject or worth but it does need to be quite large in scale in comparison to the other pieces you are adding. The purpose of this piece is not to attract all the attention but to work as an anchor for the other pieces and as the main shaping point to construct the rest of your hang around. Once the centre piece is decided, the rest of the works can be added. Whilst the beauty of this hanging

style means that the artworks don’t all need to be hung in grid like unison on the wall, it is important that a balance and random cohesion is still evident throughout the hanging. You can do this by selecting textures, colours and dimensions that all work in harmony. One of the easiest ways to ensure you get a french hang right BEFORE you hammer any nails in, is to blu-tac pieces of paper cut to the shape and size of your artworks and into formation on the wall. That way you can move them about until you are happy with the placement and position of each piece. This technique also allows you to be able to step back and survey the hang from a distance to make sure

you have the proportions in scale to the rest of the room and its furniture. Remember a french hang is a work in progress, eclectic in style and forever changeable. Switch artworks out and replace them‌the possibilities are endless and the results always breathtaking. That truly is the beauty of this style of hanging so let out your inner creative beast and unleash its magic until your hearts, walls and eyes are blissfully happy!

VAPOR “Life is a vapor. It passes in the blink of an eye. Sarah Louise Delany

A diptych (pronounced diptick) is a piece of art created in two parts. It may be a painting, drawing, photograph, carving or any other flat artwork. The format of the pictures may be landscape or portrait and they will usually be the same size. If you were to add a third panel, it would be a triptych. 70

Vapor I SKU - OE2-011-014

Diptychs have been a popular choice among artists for centuries. Typically, the two panels are closely related to one another, though it may also be the same piece that is continued on a separate panel. In other instances, the two panels may be different perspectives on the same subject or share color

Vapor II SKU - OE2-011-013

or composition with different subjects. You will often see, for instance, portraits painted of a married couple with one person in each panel using the same technique and color palette. Other diptychs may focus on contrasting concepts, such as life and death, happy and sad, or rich and poor.

FIRN “Be like snow - cold but beautiful.” Lana del Rey

The word diptych comes from the Greek root “dis”, meaning “two,” and “ptykhe,” meaning “fold.” Originally, the name was used to refer to folding writing tablets used in ancient Roman times. Two boards, most commonly wood, but also bone or metal, were hinged together and the inner faces covered with a layer of wax which could be inscribed. In later centuries, the diptych became a common way to display religious stories or honor saints and other important figures. The hinge made them into easily portable altarpieces and prevented any damage to the artwork. These two diptychs VAPOR and FIRN are textural and create depth with their careful composition.

Colour trends come and go but some don’t always make a splash on the home front. This year everyone is talking about earthy shades, sage greens, warm neutrals and dashes of red. As the weather cools down, these colours are a natural go-to option to freshen up the home and are making the leap from interior design magazines and websites to the living room. Grey-green is the new IT colour, according to some experts. Add in terracotta, russet, maroon and natural materials and you have a cosy space for the cooler months.

The big paint companies are mostly opting for these autumnal colours, which are an easy fit in Australian homes. Of course, designers say if you stick with warm neutrals on your walls, you have the flexibility to play around with colour and give your rooms a fresh new feel. “Most home enthusiasts are comfortable with earthy shades as we see these natural colours in everyday living,” says Dulux colourplanning expert Andrea Lucena-Orr.

“Simplicity is not about making something without ornament, but rather about making something very complex, then slicing elements away, until you reveal the very essence. Christoph Niemann

Not only the usefulness but also the beauty of the minerals have been coveted since the beginning of times. Although these have also been used as decoration materials, a clear trend has arisen towards more than the creation, the adaptation of minerals and rocks that have been formed and extracted from the earth. 76

Using these to become objects of decoration, these pieces stop being only simple minerals, to transform through their hardness, transparency, geometry and color into desirable pieces for design lovers and collectors.

“A successful life is an authentic life. Happiness and creativity rest on a foundation of transparency to yourself and others. Knowing your own heart and speaking clearly to others keep you on the path. Gay Hendricks

Pellicle is a synonym for transparent, the idea of transparency is both physical and emotional. These prints are transparent in their stripping down of the subject matter to its lineal essence. The celebration of Australian natives is proudly but subtly showcased here.

JACQUARD The Jacquard weave is one that in its complexity offers the melding together of patterns, the embedding of layers and the knitting together of threads. This action philosophically can be interpreted as the way ideas and art come to life. The weaving together of many different threads to make the whole, the rhythm of the loom.

“A good life is like a weaving. Energy is created in the tension. The struggle, the pull and tug are everything. Joan Erikson

“A tree is beautiful, but what’s more, it has a right to life; like water, the sun and the stars, it is essential. Life on earth is inconceivable without trees.” Anton Chekhov

Trees are the pathway to paper and FINEPRINT co uses exemplary paper from Hahnemuhle in Germany. A company that prides themselves in the very best of processes and manufacturing standards, they make everything from bamboo paper to more traditional variations.

MULBERRY “I put everything I can into the mulberry of my mind and hope that it is going to ferment and make a decent wine. How that process happens, I’m sorry to tell you I can’t describe.” John Hurt

Just as monarch caterpillars depend upon milkweed, silkworms eat mulberry tree leaves (trees of the genus Morus). The mulberry is a large, deciduous tree, that can have black, red, or white edible berries, or it can be fruitless. While mulberries live in many different warm temperate regions throughout the world, most mulberry species are native to Asia, home to the silkworms. The delicate and intricate patterns of a cocooning silkworm are what inspired our in-house designers with these prints.

FINEPRINT co offers premium quality photographic prints from the Slim Aarons Archive, owned and housed by Getty Images. All photographs are printed and authorised by the Getty Images Gallery London. Increasingly heralded for his influence, Slim Aarons established his place in the Pantheon of great post-war photographers. It was Aarons who perfected, if not invented, the environmental portrait while photographing the international elite in their exclusive playgrounds during the jet-set decades ranging from the ‘50s to the ‘90s, carrying out his self-described mission: to document “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” Here we have featured a black and white image of the “Travelling Star”, this is one of many Slim Aarons images FINEPRINT co offers exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. Also featured are a few images from our Open Editions, a large range of prints that are posed at the trade and wholesale market in the region. Please see our website for the dedicated Slim Aarons catalogue, as well as all other catalogues of the products available, alternatively give us a call. We are always happy to help curate a selecton of artwork that suits your requirements.

Soho We are proud to present this exclusive Exhibition’s prints directly from Getty Images Gallery in London. Surrounded by the international wealth of Mayfair, St. James’s and Fitzrovia, Soho was a dark labyrinth of alleys populated by seedy clubs, neighbourhood cafes and intimate music venues. Intrinsically linked with sex, fashion and music, its streets and bars were the haunt of gangsters, prostitutes, pimps, artists, musicians, writers and revellers alike. The area’s bohemian character attracted anybody who dared to venture in whatever their predilection, making it one of the capital’s most risqué and bestloved hangouts. Venues such as the Windmill Club, The Raymond Revue Bar, Cy Laurie’s Jazz Club and the Marquee Club attracted the likes of Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones to name but a few. The exhibition stemmed from the discovery of an original glass plate negative taken in 1910 entitled ‘The Smallest Shop’.

The image shows a space six feet long, five feet high and two feet deep, occupied by a cobbler, at 4 Bateman Street in the heart of Soho. Curiosity piqued, researchers at Getty Images Gallery began a year-long project to mine their archives for more images which would reveal the history of this much-loved area, uncovering rare photographs of The Windmill Theatre and The Raymond Revue bar.

#sohoexhibition #sohothenandnow

Delving into the murky depths of Soho’s past, the viewer is taken on a fascinating tour down narrow streets and pavements bustling with nightlife. We take furtive glances into basement clubs, corner cafes and tiny shops where we meet the diverse faces who helped establish Soho as one of London’s best-loved villages. The exhibition illustrates the importance of preserving the area’s rich architectural and cultural history into the future. Please see our website for FINEPRINT co’s curated selection from the Exhibition.
