This was one of my resolutions for this year, to see and experience Bangalore more. So I have been walking around a lot, this time with the WOW (Women On Wanderlust) group. I registered for a walking trip with WOW- a touring company, run by women for women. The idea was to explore old Bangalore from a historical and hopefully, a slightly different perspective and in the process, make new friends as well.

I

have lived in Bangalore for a decade now, and in the busyness of everyday life, doing things, making ends meet and so on, I have never seen Bangalore. Sure, I have had a drink at all the pubs and found every nightclub the night it opened, but never had I ventured into the city. While I am largely to blame for this debauchery, the fact remains that the historical buildings and landmarks have fallen to neglect and disrepair, largely because Bangalore isn't really considered a touristy city. It is the city where you come to find a fine paying job or to make something of yourself, but not a city where one assumes there to be a whole lot of history.

We started bright and early at 8 am, meeting just outside the north entrance to Tipu sultan's summer Palace. The palace is in the heart of the city, an area known as ChamrajpĂŠte. PĂŠte, in Kannada, stands for market, and as it happens, this is the area that used to house the trading centres back in the day of the Wodeyars and Tippoo Sultan. The palace, the associated armouries, and the pĂŠtes or the markets used to be enclosed within the walls of the Bangalore fort, most of which is now lost. The Summer palace, which is where we started out walk, has largely been assimilated into the Bangalore medical college and Minto Hospital, and the ASI has done a rather shoddy job of restoring what remains. We entered via the north gate, which wasn't the main gate of the palace, as it were. The east gate, the one right next to the temple was the main entrance, and that leads to the durbar halls. The two durbar halls, one facing north, and the other south are both mirror images of each

other, and this is where the king and the queen would hold court. The whole palace was supposed to have been covered by paintings, murals and artwork. The mural paintings on the walls and ceilings were made on canvas which was then applied to the walls. However, instead of restoring this art, ASI has simply peeled off the canvas from most places and covered the walls with a synthetic brown paint. Some remnants of the murals are still visible. The rose wood pillars which hold up the roof were brought in by the French, were then soaked and conditioned in the river Kaveri so they would be water resistant, which is why they still stand, nearly 500 years later. However, these pillars are also falling apart with holes gouged into them. Most of the gardens have now been taken over by BBMP roads. The Venkatramanna temple, which the Muslim Ruler Tippoo Sultan build for his Hindu subjects, to win over their fielty still stands. Back in the day, the palace had five attached armouries which held the arms and ammunition, and were usually build either underground, or at a depression, to keep them cool, as well as hidden from view. However, today, only one armoury remains, the rest have been destroyed. This last standing one, funnily enough, isn't even on the ASI list of preserved monuments because it wasn't included in a survey conducted in 1950- which somehow validates ASI's claim that it was erected after 1950!!! It is now part of a dilapidated house in a part of town which isn't easily navigable and the owners of April 2016 | Corporate Outbound 9

the house allow a few groups of tourists like us, but mostly because the college student and our guide leading our walk was on friendly terms with the owners of this home. They, of course, do not allow for photography, because they fear the loss of home and hearth in the process of preservation of this important archaeological remains. There are moral and ethical arguments that need to be considered, but morally and legally speaking, this little piece of history definitely needs to be preserved, for the future. There are now some efforts to preserve this little piece of history, but there's a long way to go. The old fort is largely gone, save for a few ramparts and the dungeons where the prisoners were housed. These little bits stand a short walk away from the summer palace. If one walks westwards, via the Minto hospital, one will arrive at the inside face of the Delhi gate, which is gate which opens in the general direction of Delhi, and hence the nomenclature. We saw what remains of the north gate or the Delhi gate, which is always locked. There were 24 gates manning the walls of the old fort, only five remain. Near the Delhi gate are also the dungeons, which can be accessed following special written permission from the ASI, and the head of the dungeon, a two-headed eagle, depicting both sides of a story, or justice can be clearly seen. Also clearly visible is the part of the fort wall that Wallace attacked. The damaged part of the wall which was later on sealed off is clearly visible.

We entered the pĂŠte through the spice market and walked a large part of the flower market, including all the way up to the third floor, where the garlands are woven. In the middle of a summer day, the place smelled like a garden, with tonnes and tonnes of roses and jasmines, literally littered all over the place. Many families come together to string together these garlands, and the place makes a for a soothing sight for tired eyes. This is where we ended our walk, exchanged numbers and cards, with promises to stay in touch. I am completely enamoured now, with this city that I have come to call home. As it always happens, change is happening to what remains to Bangalore, and these changes are inevitable for a growing city. However, no matter what the change, Bangalore still retains its old-world charm, and deep within, the nostalgic memories of music, fresh air, charming houses, women sitting in verandas cleaning rice while gossiping remain etched in time.It is our job, as residents, to preserve this, for our future generations to feel and see.

The fort used to open, via the Delhi gate, into the PĂŠte or the market, chikpet and doddapet (now called avenue road). The market had various other sections, such as flower market, spice market, rice market and so on. The markets of course flourish and are the central business hub in the Bangalore of today. 10 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

Argentina By Garima Singhal

12 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

A

rgentina is the eighth largest country in the world and one of the most popular places to visit in South America. And if someone from India is looking for something a little off the beaten track, Argentina is a wonderful destination. The country with its colorful Boca, musical Tango and rich history is a delight to the senses. The country is quite the revelation, once you get there, with the European, almost French Café culture flourishing in Buenos Aires to the frozen waterfalls to the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Pampas grasslands and the old world, colonial charms of Bahia Blanca. All of this, of course, if you can steal yourself from the capital city, the one of a kind, a combination of the eclectic and ethereal, Buenos Aires.

Getting to Argentina is easy. Most national and international airlines now run flights which connect to the capital city of Buenos Aires, usually via Rio de Janerio or Sao Paolo in Brazil. It is a long journey, but certainly worth the wait. Arrival in Buenos Aires is hassle free, and the customs and immigration fairly simple. And then you get to step out, and breathe in the fragrant Argentinian air. Sexy, stirring and fearless, this city, with its European flair with melancholic Latin American twist gets under your skin, and you are never, ever rid of the memories you'll make here. The Porteños (the city's residents) are passionate, opinionated, almost a study in contrast with their European flair and Latino intensity, and once you get past their hard-metropolitan facade, very friendly. The city is just like its residents, contrasts displayed right next to each other, with wide boulevards of Puerto Madero and Microcentro to the cobblestone alleys of La Boca, Steamy tango and rock and roll, sidewalk cafés and soccer fanatics, bejewelled ladies in fur coats and children rummaging through trash for cardboard scraps, the vista of humanity. The centre of the city is the very friendly and pleasant Plaza de Mayo, which is lined with manicured lawns and stately building, basking in their Spanish architecture, including the Casa Roasda or the Pink Palace. This is the presidential palace, open to the public on all days and overcome with memories of the country, of the legendary Evita- Eva Perón, Maradona and the art of Quinquela Martin. Located right next to the Casa Rosada is the Bicentenaries museum, also on the Plaza de Mayo. This museum is an old port to Puerto Madero, connected to the pink house, and has been converted to a museum showing the past 100 years of Argentina's rather turbulent history. It houses, what was to be the original royal seal of the Argentinean state as well as the original plan for Puerto Madero. The old constitutions of the states of Argentina and Cordoba are also on display here. The other place to go to is the Microcentro, or the Florida street, which is the place to buy anything and everything you could ever want. If you, however, are interested in handmade goods and flea markets, San Telmo, in Puerto Madero is the place to go. This leads, via a busy thoroughfare, to the Plaza San Martin, a busy park now, and once the main bullfighting arena. Also close by are the Obelisc, the El Ateneo- one of the most beautiful libraries to ever exist, and the Teatro Col贸n, the third largest, and the best opera house in the world and the fifth best acoustic experience in the world, both according to the National Geographic. The Teatro Col贸n is a treat to all the senses. Once inside, one is pulled into a world that comprises only of the Col贸n, and the outside world ceases to exist and the spectator almost forgets to breathe, encompassed in such humbling grandeur and beauty. Catching a performance there is almost impossibility, as it is booked, not months, but years in advance, so plan, if you really want to. How can one talk of Buenos Aires and Argentina and not talk of La Boca and the Tango. The streets of La Boca, as history has it, was the place where impoverished artists first settled, and as the place got more touristy over the years, 16 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

became the most sought after place. Today, its stands proud, with colorful walls and houses and knick knacks that can be bought all over. And then there's the Tango, possibly, Argentina's greatest contribution to the world, a steamy strut that has been described as making love vertically, and made famous by Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Folklore says it began in the bordellos, or the slums of Buenos Aires, where men, waiting for their lovers, would dance amongst themselves. The city is littered with endless venues and artists who will teach you, and help you perfect the moves for very little, and has now evolved to shows of grand feats of extreme athleticism. The Madero Tango, located on the river at the Puerto Madero is a great place to catch a breathtaking show. Oh, and when in Argentina, do not miss out on eating a lot of Dulce de leche icecream from Freddo's.

Express Info Currency: Argentine Peso = 4.57 INR Travel: Emirates, Quantas, Etihad, Malaysian, Thai airways. Air India will fly you from Delhi and Mumbai to a codeshare destination in Europe and European airlines fly from there. All the above will have two stops, change of planes or more, with fares starting from 1, 05,000 INR. Buenos Aires is the main airport, but airlines will also fly you to Cordoba and Bahia Blanca. Air, road and train connect the cities well domestically. Buses run between cities at frequent intervals.

Dharamshala By Garima Singhal

T

he snow clad Dhauladhar ranges form the backdrop for the gorgeous Dharamshala, which is in the upper reaches of the Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by cedar forests, this little hilly town is the summer home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile, and the influence of Tibet and Buddhism can be seen all over this quaint little town and it makes for a perfect little weekend getaway from Delhi.

Getting to Dharamshala is fairly easy. The Dharamshala Gaggal airport, which is about 12 kms south of the town of Dharamshala is now fully operational and most commercial airlines run flights, or you can opt for a slightly long bus journey from ISBT, which will take you to the scenic Shimla, via the very well organized Chandigarh, from where, you will have to take a car to reach Dharamshala. The last leg of the drive is bumpy, and the car can get stuck at places. But it will get you there. And once there, you will be in a haven of your own! Until the British Raj, Dharamshala, and the surrounding districts were ruled by the Katoch dynasty of Kangra, a royal family that ruled the valley for two millennia. They still keep a residence in Dharamshala, known as the Clouds end Villa. The British annexed Kangra, and its provinces and well as the majority of territory ruled by the Katoch dynasty into the then state of Punjab. After Independence, upon congress with Sardar Patel, the Kangra valley went to Himachal Pradesh. The suburbs of Dharamshala include McLeodganj, Bhagsunath, Dharamkot, Forsythganj, Kotwali bazaar, kachahari adda, Ramnagar, Sidhbari and more. The village of Mcleodganj houses, and is famous worldwide, for the presence of the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan exiled administration set up in the North Indian hill station in 1960, led by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. This was followed by the Tibetan uprising and a large number of Tibetan refugees who settled in Dharamshala and other cities all over India. The Buddhist seat of power as well as that of Tibet has since stayed in Dharamshala and has become a place of pilgrimage for 20 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

Buddhists and students of Tibetan culture from the world over. The Karmapa, the head of the Karma Kagyu, the largest sub-school of Tibetan Buddhism is housed in Sidhbari. Upon reaching Dharamshala, it is advisable to take a few hours off to get used to the surroundings and get used to being in the higher altitudes, especially if one is prone to mountain sickness. Once acclimitized, you can proceed to absorb the enchanting, picturesque surroundings and the spiritual atmosphere, inspired by the heavy presence of Buddhism in the town. It is advisable to stay around McLeodganj if one is spirtually and religiously inclined and wishes to imbibe some of the Buddhist art, culture, handicrafts and temples. Namgyal monastery is close by, and this is the seat of the Dalai Lama. Norbulingka institute, for the study of Buddhism is close by and works primarily towards carrying on Tibetan traditions and heritage by providing training, education and employment to Tibetans in the region. They also produce high quality artifacts, clothings and home furnishings, a great place for souvenir shopping. The Kangra fort and the Masrur temple ruins are located about 20 kms outside of the town of Dharamshala, and offer a view into the Katoch dynasty, and more so, into the Indo Aryan heritage in the rock cut temples of Masrur. Bhagsu falls are a beautiful, snowy white falls located behind the temple of Bhagsunag in the small village of Bhagsu. The waterfalls and the village of Bhagsu are situated on the main road connecting McLeodganj and the Dharamshala town. This is one of the major tourist attraction, made up of its pristine, fresh water spring, the stone cliffs, a mecca for rock climbers and the slate quarry. Tourists take a dip in the holy water and visit the Shiva temple of Bhagsunag. The adventure seekers then continue on to Triund, spectacular hilltop, only approachable by a trek. The stunning snowline of the 22 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

Dhauladhar ranges start just 5 kms from Triund, and this is a lovely spot to come and take in the vista and be amazed by its majesty, with the Dhauladhar on one side and the Kangra valley on the other. There are several other attractions in the various suburbs of the hilly town, but the one thing that binds the all is that they are all away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and a weary traveller, tired from his days and nights in the city and just come to this singular little town, sit in the little cafĂŠs and just unwind, slow down, and watch the world go by.

Express Info Travel: Dharamshala is reached by air by the Dharamshala Gaggal Airport, and there is good connectivity via road from Shimla, Chandigarh or Pathankot. There is also good train connectivity to Pathankot, from where, road can be taken to reach Dharamshala. Dharamshala is a municipal corporation in the district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as the residence of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile. At an average elevation of 1457 meters above sea level and being situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar ranges, the temperatures can dip to freezing in the winter months. Summers are very pleasing, but can be hot at times.

Method: For the Duxelles: Add mushrooms, shallots, garlic, and thyme to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Add butter and olive oil to a large saute pan and set over medium heat. Lamb wellington The most infamous traditional British dish -Beef Wellington consisting of a seared filet mignon smothered in a whole-grain mustard and wrapped in layers of salty prosciutto, an herbed crepe, duxelles (mushrooms that have been pulverized into a paste), and puff pastry. The whole package is then baked until the crust crisps up and the meat reaches medium-rare perfection. Here I have replaced beef with lamb which is easily available and acceptable as far as Indian culture goes. Don’t be afraid to experiment and this meat could be replaced with any fresh ocean fish or shellfish. Happy Cooking.

INGREDIENTS For the Duxelles: 400gms white button mushrooms 2 shallots, peeled and roughly chopped 4 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped 2 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves only 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper For the Lamb: 2 kg lamb leg trimmed Extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 sprigs of fresh thyme 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 pound puff pastry, thawed if using frozen 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt Minced chives, for garnish 24 Corporate Outbound | April 2016

For the Lamb: Debone the lamb leg and tie so it holds its cylindrical shape while cooking. Drizzle with olive oil, then season with salt and pepper and sear all over, including the ends, in a hot, heavy-based skillet lightly coated with olive oil - about 2 to 3 minutes. Using a rubber spatula cover evenly with a thin layer of duxelles. Season the surface of the duxelles with salt and pepper and sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves. When the lamb is seared, remove from heat, cut off twine and smear lightly all over with Dijon mustard. Allow to cool slightly, then roll up in the duxelles using the plastic wrap to tie it up nice and tight. Roll it up tightly in plastic wrap and twist the ends to seal it completely and hold it in a nice log shape. Set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to ensure it maintains its shape. Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius On a lightly floured surface, roll the puff pastry out to about a 1/4-inch thickness. Depending on the size of your sheets you may have to overlap 2 sheets and press them together. Remove lamb from refrigerator and cut off plastic. Set the lamb in the center of the pastry and fold over the longer sides, brushing with egg wash to seal. Trim ends if necessary then brush with egg wash and fold over to completely seal the lamb - saving ends to use as a decoration on top if desired. Top with coarse sea salt. Place the lamb seam side down on a baking sheet. Brush the top of the pastry with egg wash then make a couple of slits in the top of the pastry using the tip of a paring knife — this creates vents that will allow the steam to escape when cooking. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until pastry is golden brown and lamb registers 65 degree celsius on a thermometer. Remove from oven and rest before cutting into thick slices. Garnish with minced chives, and serve with Green Peppercorn Sauce, Roasted Potatoes with Fresh Herbs and Garlic, and Warm Wilted Winter Greens.

Millions of people (more than 3 times the population of Rabat) attend the festival’s more than 100 concerts. Since Mawazine’s debut in 2002, big-name headliners have included Stevie Wonder, Kylie Minogue, Quincy Jones, Elton John and Whitney Houston, and musicians and singers from across Africa, India, Europe, the Caribbean and South America have rounded out the roster. Opening and closing acts tend to be internationally famous artists, but the bulk of the festival highlights artists who are best known in their own countries.

Galungan is the most important feast for Balinese Hindus, a celebration to honor the creator of the universe and the spirits of the ancestors. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and encourages the Balinese to show their gratitude to the creator and sainted ancestors. The whole island sprouts tall bamboo poles called penjor - these are usually decorated with fruit, coconut leaves, and flowers, and set up on the right of every residence entrance. At each gate, you'll also find small bamboo altars set up especially for the holiday, each one bearing woven palm-leaf offerings for the spirits. Troupes move from village to village and temple to temple to perform this classic dance that describes the fight between good and evil - Barong and Rangda.

his 4-day celebration of art, sustainability, music, performance and life aims to spread the proverbial lightning beyond the bottle and into the daily lives of all its participants. Produced by the Do LaB, a creative collective based out of Southern California, LIB began in 2000 as a private birthday party in the Santa Ynez Mountains outside Santa Barbara and has grown into a public event. While many festivals brag about being “more than just a music festival,” LIB actually delivers. LIB was one of the first in a genre of “transformational festivals” that combine personal-growth workshops with electronic beats in a mind-expansive setting. Here you’ll find three-dimensional interactive art installations, yoga and meditation services, a colorful cityscape of vendors, performers and games, and a vibe that’s more like a chill psychedelic circus sideshow than a big-box music festival.
