Belgium A Sensual Journey!
O
ne fine morning my manager at office invited me for a meeting and asked me if I liked to travel. Excited, I said yes, in a heartbeat! On a second thought though, this will be the first time I’d be living away from my family in an unknown country. Yet, the excitement was prevailing the anxiety and a month later I prepared to leave everybody I knew behind for a long time.
The destination was Belgium – the cockpit of Europe! When the day arrived, with lot of enthusiasm, I boarded the flight to Paris and after an hour journey in a high speed train I reached the final destination - Brussels! There are direct flights but this was a more romantic route. The sun was shining, the air was fresh and everything seemed just right until the moment when the driver gave a scare by asking me to be careful in this area. To add to the unease, being the business district, the roads were totally deserted on weekends – not a single soul in sight. This is how my journey began in Belgium, landing at the deserted “Rue du Progrès” and taking a walk at the contrasting “Rue Neuve”, crowded with all kinds of people, surrounding by a mix of traditional and modern buildings and of course my friends. The best way to explore Brussels is either in the red bus called “Hop On, Hop Off ” or by walk. I explored most of the Brussels on foot and occasionally on metro. Starting with “Rue Neuve” or New Street, which is one of the busier shopping streets in the center of Brussels, was bursting with young crowd due to close proximity to the colleges and universities. A visit to this street on any day can light up a boring evening. This being center of the city attracting many tourists, the streets were lined with all kinds of shops - from big brands selling luxury items to small shops selling handmade items like embroidered linen, purse or handbag. 8 Corporate Outbound | August 2015

The most popular attraction at the center of the city is Grand Place, which is the city’s Central Square. The square was surrounded by medieval buildings, containing City’s Town Hall and Museum of the City of Brussels. The buildings were oozing luxury and character with several buildings adorning golden engraving. We took a bag of frites with mayonnaise, sat among the crowd in the middle of the square and gazed at them long enough for the night to fall and to notice the imperfection of the main Town Hall building. Apparently legend has it that the architect committed suicide after realizing that the building’s entry arch doesn’t quite line up with the tower. Grand Place at night was indeed magical. Belgium is famous for Frites or French fries which actually originated in Belgium and is not France as the name suggests. Note: The square was venue to several yearly events like flower carpet (once in two years), jazz festival, fireworks etc. The next day, as it was a Sunday, we went to the city center again to visit another famous landmark. A few minutes from Grand Place, I was taken to a statue of a small boy pissing into a fountain. The place was jam-packed with people and we had to wait for several minutes for our turn, to click a photo. Manneken Pis is a very popular tourist attract. But, I didn’t quite understand the appeal of a tiny boy pissing into a small fountain at first. But the more time, I spent in Brussels and the more legends I heard, the more I realized what the boy symbolizes. It captures the calmness and spirit of resistance of the people of Brussels. One of the legends on this statue goes like this - a little boy named Julianske, happened to be spying on the enemies who were preparing to attack the city. Sensing the threat, he urinated on the burning fuse which eventually saved the entire city. 10 Corporate Outbound | August 2015

Belgium produces the greatest variety of bricks in the world.
Without missing, we did try out Belgium Waffles near Manneken Pis. There was variety of topping to choose, from simple chocolate sauce to more exuberant whipped cream with strawberries. Life is like a box of chocolates. I’m sure we all have heard these words, but to understand the meaning of these, I’d to travel a thousand miles to Belgium, literally! Belgium produces the best chocolates in the world, ranging from a simple plain chocolates bars like Dairy Milk to a more assorted surprises which “you will never know what you’re gonna get”. The world's biggest chocolate selling point is Brussels National Airport. Next we headed towards Royal Palace of Brussels which is located just a few minutes’ away. This is the official palace of the King and Queen of the Belgium. The palace faces Brussels Park which is the largest of its kind in Brussels. We took a walk like the kings prior, around the park, glancing at the numerous beautiful sculptures and fountains. Brussels Summer Festival This one-of-a-kind festival takes over the city, which has a great time in all kinds of ways and at great prices. When Manneken-Pis picks up his guitar, everyone starts rocking'n'rolling in Brussels during the BSF! It takes place in a giant stage beneath the windows of the Royal Palace and another at Mont des Arts as well as more than 30 indoor concerts and after-parties. The next week, the first weekend trip we took in Brussels was to Atomium. This place is at the other end of the city in Laeken, but 12 Corporate Outbound | August 2015
not very far – again a few minutes in metro. Atomium is a modern wonder with nine huge spheres connected to form a shape of an iron crystal atom – hence, the name Atomium. The top sphere provides a good panoramic view of Brussels.
Express Info Currency 1 EURO = 70.1701 INR
More interestingly, located at the foot of the Atomium was Mini Europe. This is the famous miniature park with reproductions of popular monuments of Europe, from Eiffel tower to the leaning tower of Pisa. We spent the entire day clicking pictures of every monument on display and of course admiring the detailing that has gone into making each of them. Sadly, I heard this place is closed now! By now you know that Belgium is known for Waffles, Frites and Chocolates. But felt grown up for these. And for our luck, no other country in the world produces more number of beers than Belgium. There are over 800 kinds of beers made in Belgium. Reports say that Belgians consume in average 150 liters of beer per person per year. There are several assortments of beers available but the king of all is the Trappist variety. Few of my colleagues had visited a monastery and brought back Westvleteren XII, a rare Trappist beer. With the World’s best beer in hand, rest of the evening was spent in its name. With 10.2% alcohol, the beer was pretty strong but at the same time, quite flavorful. The rich aroma and smooth taste with a hint of caramel/ vanilla, was one of the better tasting beers I've ever had. . The weekends continued with other beers. Rochefort 10 - at 11.3%, by

far is the strongest of all Trappist. Achel & LaTrappe tripel, relatively mild - 8% alcohol content. They all taste different but somehow feel related. If you were wondering what the link between monasteries and beer is – the Trappist beers are brewed by monks for their livelihood in their monasteries in Belgium and Netherlands. The next beer, Westmalle tripel, in contrary, at 9.5% alcohol content is very strong. A glass or two of this will definitely knock you down. The final Trappist beer which defines dark beer for me - the Chimay Bleue. It is also a strong beer with 9% alcohol but has a great blend of rich dry fruit and brown sugar taste. This is the beer that helped me acquire taste for dark beer.
Getting THERE Brussels Airport (Brussel - Zaventem) is an International airport of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. There are direct flights to Brussels from New Delhi and Mumbai. The fare starts from INR 52000 (round trip) From Brussels Airport, you can either take a taxi which costs around 50-60 euros or train for around 10 euros or bus for 4 euros to the city. Visa & other related queries: log on: www.vfs-be-in.com.
As I explored places, I treated myself with more tastes like Flemish Meat Stew, Mussels etc. With so many diverse experiences to offer, I’m happy that I got an opportunity to spend some years of my life in Belgium. There may be more romantic and better known places in Europe, but for me there’s something about Belgium that still excites me. And if given an opportunity again, I will accept it yet again! Rishikesh & Haridwar The Gateway to the Himalayas
Ganga - Aarti: A Gesture To Honour And Say Thanks A pleasant ritual of worshipping river Ganga is a spectacular sight that one absolutely can't miss. The Aarti on the Ganges takes place every evening after sunset. Thousands of people witness the Aarti on any day. You can sit quietly in a corner and witness the ritual or join the crowds singing bhajans . During this religious ritual, worshippers of the Ganga chant shlokas and mantras while immersing a burning lamp (diya) into the waters. This tradition is believed to rid you of your pains and sins. Aarti at Triveni Ghat - A confluence of three holy important Rivers the Ganges, the Yamuna and the Saraswati, is a most revered sacred bathing spot in Rishikesh and is situated on the banks of Ganges River. It is of belief that those who take a dip in water at this ghat washes away all the sins and purifies the soul and will have salvation. Daily in the morning and evening there are thousands who take bath here and enjoy the Maha Aarti being performed. Take a walk around the beautiful bridges of Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula, buy wheat balls and feed the Masheer fish which can be found in big groups in Ram Jhula, shop for some stones, gems or necklaces, and much more.
Ram Jhula
Also referred to as the Shivananda Jhula, this suspension bridge across the Ganga was once just a hanging jute rope across which Lord Rama is said to have crossed the river. The Government built Ram Jhula with help from the Sivananda Ashram Divine Life Society in 1980, and today this 450-feet suspension bridge serves as the connection between Muni ki Reti and Swarg Ashram.
Lakshman Jhula
Legends state that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king of Lanka; and Lakshmana, his younger brother, crossed the river Ganges, at a point, where the present 'Lakshman Jhula' bridge stands today, using a jute rope bridge. Laxman Jhula is a quiet and serene place that is separated from the noise and hurry of the town of Rishikesh just a few kilometers away. The Jhula itself is a cable stayed bridge across the Ganges. Laxman Jhula has a few temples located around it, including the tall Trayambakeshwar temple. Temples apart, Ganges and the surrounding scenery look beautiful, with the river flowing out from the mountains into the plains of North India.
Accessibility: By Air: Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun is the nearest airport to Rishikesh which is approximately 35 kilometres away. Popular carriers like Air India, Spice Jet and Jet Airways often have daily flights from New Delhi. Apart from Delhi, there is a flight from Lucknow to Dehradun as well. The second nearest international airport for Rishikesh is New Delhi. It is well-connected with different cities across the globe. One can opt for cab to Rishikesh, a good option for a hassle free traveling especially for foreign tourists who are traveling to India for the first time. It's a 6 to 7 hours journey. Note: Try and leave Delhi between 4-5 am as driving time increases beyond 6 hours due to morning congestion in towns like Modinagar and Roorkee. By Bus: Being a popular tourist destination, Rishikesh has a good network of buses connecting across major cities such as Dehradun, New Delhi, Mumbai and many other places.

Rishikesh, the Land of the Sages, has been a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand' (the present day Garhwal). It is believed that when Raibya Rishi undertook rigorous penance, God appeared in the form of ‘Hrishikesh’ and 16 Corporate Outbound | August 2015

Though just 45 mins away, Haridwar and Rishikesh are very different in their entire look and feel. Haridwar thrives on Indian pilgrims and religious beliefs, poojas, donations. In Sanskrit, Haridwar stands for Dwara of Hari or Gateway to God, where 'Hari' means God and 'dwar' means gate. Rishikesh apart from the religious aspect is also acquiring greater significance as a center for white water rafting, revering sports, a base for treks and hikes in the beautiful Garhwal Himalayas. Har Ki Paudi
Regarded the most sacred and auspicious point to bathe in the Ganga during the Kumbh which is held every 12 years, and taking a dip is a sacred practice. This is one of the main attractions for those traveling to Haridwar and Rishikesh for religious purposes. The ghat is also known as Brahma Kund, and was built by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Brithari who often meditated on the banks of river Ganga. History records an imprint of Lord Vishnu's foot on one of the stones present on the ghat, which is where this religious site takes its name from.
Rafting
Rishikesh is also a hub for adventure sports in North India. Every year, between September to April, millions of people gun for Rishikesh for white water rafting. There are several gushing rapids ranging from ferocious to mild along the stretch from Shivpuri down till Ram Jhula. Shivpuri, Marine Drive, Brahmpuri and Kaudiyala are the four hottest spots to pick between. At one point you have the option of disembarking for the cliff jump which looks tamer than it is once you're at the top. Then Araku Valley is your answer. So, this is the time to pack your bags and escape to Araku. Araku is also called as Andhra’s Ooty (unofficially). Araku Valley, nestled in Eastern Ghats, gives you a much needed peaceful break from city. One would get lost in the beauty of nature at Araku. It’s a cool and scenic destination for nature lovers. Situated 120 kms north-west of Vishakhapatnam, this hill station makes a good option for people opting for off-beat holidays. It is best visited post-monsoon, i.e., from November to February. The valley is surrounded by mountains like Galikonda, Raktakonda, Sunkarimetta and Chitamogondi.

TYDA - An eco-tourism project
This nature camp located at a distance of 75 Km from Vizag (on the way to Araku valley) is the place for bird watching, rock climbing, trekking and overnight stay. Araku is famous for its coffee plantations and is a home to a large number of South Indian Tribal’s. One would not fail to notice the culture and traditions of the local tribes who still reside here and practice ancient traditions. They are approachable and are known for their hospitality. Occasionally they also perform their traditional dance to entertain tourists. Their ancient culture is also summed up in a tribal museum here. The best thing to do is to get down at Borra caves (the way to Araku from Visakhapatnam) and cover this place first. Later you can hire a cab at Borra caves to see other places around Borra caves and then proceed towards Araku valley.
Borra Caves
There are many places around Araku Valley which one shouldn’t miss. Borra Caves in one of them. Discovered around 200 years ago, the cave and its water puddles would keep your eyes glued to its beauty. According to geologist the humic acid in the water reacts with calcium carbonate in the limestone and dissolves the minerals breaking the rock gradually, resulting into a huge hole or the cave. In fact “Bora” means hole in Oriya. One would be surprised to find magnificent Borra Caves in nondescript place like Araku. Caves are large, spectacular, well maintained and full of beautiful formations. The Borra caves will be well worth the time and travel.
Galikonda view point
The view point is next to the main road before Araku. Beautiful views of hills and the valleys can be seen here.
Tribal Museum
The museum unlike others is not historical, but instead showcases 24 Corporate Outbound | August 2015
the orthodox lifestyle, along with the social, economical and cultural norms and customs of the native tribes of the region. The museum itself is built with mud and various metals that give it an authentic tribal feel and lend more credence to the artifacts that reside within. Aimed at preserving and displaying the dominant traits of original tribal culture, traditional handicrafts, and fine arts of ancient tribes, the display of beautiful artifacts’, intricate ornaments and exquisite textiles of the tribes of Northern Andhra Pradesh is a sight to behold.
Coffee- from coffee plantations to cafe
Organic Coffee cultivated at Araku and Anantagiri in Visakhapatnam district has earned a name for itself in the international market. Tribal’s lack access to pesticides in some remote areas; therefore the yield from those areas was free of chemical residues and being marketed as organic coffee. Tones of coffee are exported to European Countries, as a try to build a brand. Buying some filter coffee here is highly recommended as the coffee is delicious and pure. At the Araku town behind APRTC bus stand there is a coffee House district’s only café. Do note their interesting tribalart inspired iron furniture- and readymade coffee flavors like the ever-favorite Cappuccino, the mocchacino and the South Indian staple - The filter coffee. This cafe also houses a coffee museum. Here the entire history of coffee is beautifully documented via ethnic sculptures. Right from the Kahwa of Africa to the Java of Indonesia and including our own plantations in Araku, Nilgiris and Chikamaglur, coffee history and associated folklore from across the world to be sampled here. One can also buy assorted coffee powders, various cafe merchandise and special caffeineflavored chocolates at the cafe.
In and around Araku
Ananthagiri hills, Bheemunipatnam Beach, Chaparai waterfalls, Mamanduru Trekking, Irrukam Island Camping, and Krishna River Lighthouse are some of the places to visit. Also, one must not miss tasting the Bamboo Biryani.

Adventure lovers can trek through the valley and visit the hill top. People can even trek till Katiki to enjoy the view of the waterfall. It would definitely make up a memorable journey There are two railway stations at Araku on the Kothavalasa-Kirandul railway line of Visakhapatnam division of the East Coast Railway, on the Indian Railways network. By Bus: APSRTC runs plenty of buses between Visakhapatnam and Araku. Araku is just 3 hours away by road from Vishakhapatnam.

Kuliya chaat Kulle, or kuliya, as they are often fondly called, are made by scooping out one of several vegetables into cup shapes, which are then filled with chick peas, pomegranate seeds, various tangy spices and a dash of lemon. The most popular vegetables and fruits used to make these cups are potatoes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, banana, apple, pineapple, mango. one can use boiled potatoes, and sweet potatoes . My favorite though, is the banana, which is split lengthwise to allow space for the fillings, and provides the ideal sweetness to the sour masala. You could call it an authentic, All-Indian Banana Split!. There are several places in old delhi area where one can find such Kuliya Chaat. The best kuliyas are available at Hira Lal Chaat Waale, who is located in Chawri Baazar.

Birdsville Races, Birdsville, Australia
B
irdsville Races is 140 + year-old horse race. It is an annual celebration of a bygone era in the Australian Outback. Founded in 1882, the Birdsville Races have run annually except during WWII and in 2007. Usually, the races take place annually on the first weekend of September and around a dozen competitions participate on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, Birdsville has become a popular tourist stopping point for adventurers who trek through the heart of Red Country. In addition to the races, there is also the air of a traditional country carnival. Men dress up in their finest cowboy duds—not ersatz, these are real cowboys, and women doff fancy hats and more turn-of-the-century dresses. It would be less haute couture and more of western wear Ascot races. Prizes are also awarded for the best dressed attendees, so plan on participating like a local. This year the festival will be held from 4th August to 5th September.
