FUNtastic Fiestas Calgary Stampede - Canada
T
his year Stampede will celebrate its 100th anniversary from 3rd to 12th July. The 10 days event - Calgary turns into one big Wild West city with people strutting about in their cowboy attire, wearing cowboy boots and donning Stetson hats. Dubbed the 'greatest outdoors show on earth', people pour in from all over and this year even Prince William and his Princess are scheduled to put in an appearance at the Stampede. It was conceptualized way back in 1912 by Guy Weadick, a vaudeville entertainer who believed it was important to preserve old western values. The tradition carried on and a century later today still manages to capture the imagination of thousands of people who come in from far and near to be a part of this event in Calgary. The event kicks off with a grand parade and the highlight is the Rodeo which attracts ace riders and ropers. A wildwest scene is re-created and there are competitions for saddle bare back riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling amongst others. It's a fun time to be in Calgary with all stops being pulled out to see that all have the time of their life where enjoyment is concerned.

Rath Yatra - Odisha, India
I
f you've ever wondered what a juggernaut actually looks like, this is where you can see it- in the great annual rath yatra (often referred to, rather prosaically, as the (Car Festival) of Lord Jagannath in Odisha. The venue for the festival is the town of Puri, famed for its temple to Lord Jagannath, as Krishna is known in this part of the country. The festival commemorates the journey of Krishna from Gokul to Mathura. For the rath yatra, three huge chariots - each with about a dozen wheels up to 7 feet in diameter are ritually pulled through the streets, from the Jagannath temple to the temple of Gundicha Mandir. This year rath yatra is happening on 18th July.
Wife-Carrying World ChampionshipsMarket Square, Sonkajarvi, Finland
T
his bizarre festival offers plenty of opportunities to prove manly prowess. Over a distance of 253.5m, contestants must tackle sand, grass and gravel surfaces, two dry obstacles and a 1m-deep water section. The only equipment carriers are allowed is a belt and they receive a 15-second fine if they drop their load. While runners-up are consoled with awards for the most entertaining couple, the best costume and the strongest carrier, the winning couple receives the woman’s weight in beer and a range of wife carrying memorabilia. Gluttons for punishment can also tackle the 100m sprint and the relay, in which men have to down a special ‘wife-carrying drink’ when they pass their man-sized baton. This year the championships will be held on Jul 3rd and 4th July.

Heiva I Tahiti- Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia
U
nlike other international festivals, Heiva I Tahiti holds its own in terms of cultural significance; attendance, and hip shaking, drum beating, dancetill-you-drop fun. During Heiva, groups from the various archipelagos of French Polynesia congregate in Tahiti for a month of festivities and competitions. The main draw of Heiva is the professional dancers. From the slow, serpentine hand-dance of aparima to the rapid, hip swiveling of ote'a, you'll find yourself mesmerized by these performers. You would feel that the dancers are telling a story with their bodies, and their costumes (or lack thereof) aid in telling that story. The amateur dance performances are also a popular attraction. You'll get everything from little boys and girls to older women and men, all passionately shaking their hips in the name of traditional dance. This year the festival will be held from 2nd July to 18th July.

Bhutan creates a Guinness World Records through ‘Maximum tree plantation’ 100 Bhutanese planted 49,672 trees in one hour on June 2, 2015
B
hutan set a new world record in plantation by planting 49,672 plants in one hour by 100 men. The previous world record was set in 2012 in Assam by planting 40,885 trees in one hour by 100 (men) army.
The plantation is in celebrating the 60th birth anniversary of the Fourth King of Bhutan who is considered as the ‘champion of environment’ worldwide. The plantation took place coinciding with the coronation of the 4th King of Bhutan and Social Forestry day. The plantation is PICSA’s (People’s Initiative in Celebrating the Sixtieth Anniversary) initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. Currently, more than 75% of the land is under forest cover and the constitution of Bhutan states that a minimum of 60% of the land shall be covered under forest for all times to come. Conservation of environment is one of the pillars of Gross National happiness (GNH), a unique developmental philosophy initiated by the Fourth King of Bhutan which makes Bhutan an example to cite across the globe. The event was initiated to pay a tribute for a King on a subject he has emphasized on and to set the world record means a big thing for me and my country. “If this record is broken, we will set it again,” said PICSA’s Project Coordinator, Karma Tshering.
