MURSHIDABAD - LAND OF INDIAN HISTORY

M

urshidabad in West Bengal is undoubtedly a place loaded with ancient monuments and cultural heritage. In the late 17th century, one Deccan Brahmin was cursing himself. Due to poverty, and he was forced to sell himself into slavery and he was bought by a Haji Shafi Isfahani, who was a Persian Merchant from Iran. The merchant renamed him to Mirza Hadi and converted him to Islam. Later, Mirza Hadi returned to India joined the service of the Mughals. His active role in Aurangzeb’s warfare in the Deccan gave him the title of “Kartalab Khan”. He was now Aurangzeb’s most favored officer as he generated the maximum revenue. On 1704, Aurangzeb honored him with the title of Murshid Quli Khan. Murshidabad was a town and district of British India in the Bengal Presidency. He renamed the city Murshidabad after his own name. In 1716, he attained the title of Nawab (ruler) of the Sabah (province) of Bengal, and Murshidabad became his capital. The reign of Siraj-ud-daula marked the entry of Great Britain into the subcontinent's affairs. Later in 1757, the British, led by Robert Clive, retook Calcutta and plotted with Mir Jafar, Siraj-ud-Daula's general, won the vital battle of Plassey (now Palashi). Murshidabad remained the capital under the British until 1790 and is still the seat of the descendants of the Nawabs of Bengal.

Alternatively, many people prefer to take a private bus to Sasan Gir from Ahmedabad as it drops them right next to the Sinh Sadan Guest House and reception center. Travelouge

monsters, myth and the malt!

London..whats on?

In India its popularly said, one cant go wrong with Goa. In my limited experience of world travel, for me outside India one cant go wrong with London. The city has so much to offer but the purpose of my writing this travelogue is not to describe London. London Bridge wasn’t falling down –it was intact, Hrithik Roshan didn’t manage to steal the Kohinoor as he claimed he did in Bang Bang. So nothing dramatic except for one evening that will remain with me forever. A Chris de Burg concert in the Mecca of all venues, the Royal Albert Hall. But more of that in a while. Reaching London on 6th May 2015 and after spending a few wonderful days in the city, we visited St.Albans supposedly the oldest Roman settlement in UK. We were taken around the beautiful town by our lovely friends Meera and Vinay and their little kid Sarayu. St.Alban’s Cathedral which dates back to 1000 AD, a walk in the town park and sumptuous lunch made the day complete! Needless to say the company of our friends were a bonus. While in London how could we skip meeting another charming couple friends – Rrituraj and Pinakee? So that too happended. 11th May evening : Chris De Burg whose songs fascinated me in my growing years was performing live in front of me at Royal Albert Hall – this was beyond my wildest dreams! From the Lady in Red to the Borderline to many of his newer numbers, this evening is for keeps for my memory. Approrpiately, I was accompanied by a Lady in Red as well! One would have thought this was enough for a vacation. But truth to tell, the vacation was yet to begin in its entirety. Scotland awaited us!! After making our way from London to Scotland on May the 12th, by the Virgin Express Rail service and passing by some of the most scenic train journeys, an intensely cold and windy Edinburgh gave us a ‘warm’ welcome. Edinburgh, despite being a big city, is decisively different from London. It retains its old world charm – the stone buildings, the cobbled roads, the quilted men, the shops selling cashmere and bagpipers – everything added to its distinct identity. Come 13th of May, an entirely different world began to open up before us. Yes I knew Scotland was beautiful, that its terrain held in its bosom many tales – mythical and real – yet I wasn’t quite prepared to experience what I was treated to. A lot of the credit would go to our tour driver cum guide cum musician cum fiercely-proud-Scotsman, Allen. Allen was the person to guide us through Scotland the next three days conducted by Haggis Tours and Travels. From tasting Whis16 Corporate Outbound | May 2015

ky at the Tomatin Single Malt distillery to seeing the world’s oldest and youngest mountains standing next to each other to posing for pictures by side of an extinct volcano to going out in search of the elusive monster at Loch Ness to visiting the William Wallace Memorial–everything that I experienced made me feel like a wide eyed young kid (except tasting the Whisky ofcourse!) We also learnt that Allen was an extremely talented musician who played the saxophone for Phil Collins in his song True Colors and from him we learnt the roots of the Scottish desire to separate from England. The Scottish people, pretty much like Indians, had been victims of brutal suppression, deceit and bloodbath by the English. William Wallace was a hero for them and the movie Brave Heart based on his life. He was caught by the British and subjected to most horrific torture and a slow and painful execution process in public to serve as a lesson and reminder to other Scotsmen not to rise in revolt. These gory tales of bloodbath are generally overshadowed by the stunning landscapes of the place and enticing single malts that come out from there. I won’t begin to describe the beauty of Scotland here…I will leave some pictures to do the job. For ones planning to visit UK in future, I would suggest getting experience beyond the very touristy things. Outside of London there are many quaint little towns where tour guides won’t take you but an internet search would make it easy. In London, do take some time off to attend a few concerts and plays – they have some of the best ones happening. And finally – do visit Scotland and pray you get a guide like Allen. He is a real story teller!

Siddhartha Deb has been a long time resident of Bangalore but currently working out of Mumbai. Often bitten by the travel bug he occasionally succumbs to the bite and takes off , either alone or with family, to destinations beyond the very touristy trails. He fancies some good things of life - a nice single malt, colorful clothing and soft music. Beyond that he claims to be just another face in the crowd.

Scotland…the land of mountains,

One would have thought this was enough for a vacation. But truth to tell, the vacation was yet to begin in its entirety. Scotland awaited us!!

Quirky modes of transportation I

f you thought Trains, cars, Flights and buses are the only way to get around then, think again. Different countries have their own peculiar modes of travel, which will leave you enthralled and give you an exciting experience of a lifetime! In India auto rickshaw is an easy mode of transport within the city. A three-wheeled vehicle for hire that can take up to 3 passengers, Autos are a great means of transport to squeeze through the chaotic Indian traffic. These are the most common and popular travel modes in all Metro and tier II cities.

Quirky modes of transportation are on the itinerary around the globe; sometimes the form of transport travellers take isn’t so familiar to them. In some instances, they’re just downright peculiar. Right from navigating on a Longtail Boat in Thailand to racing the dog sleighs in Alaska there are thousands of strange and oddly intriguing forms of transportation around the world. Here is our list of the unique modes of travel around the world.

Jeepney, Philippines

A mammoth vehicle that is aptly called the “undisputed king of the road”; brightly decorated Jeepney are a symbol of Philippine culture and the most popular way of getting around in the country. When The Americans pulled their troops out of the country at the end of World War II, citizens were gifted surplus army Jeeps. This is how the original jeepney came into being. The Filipinos stripped them down, added roofs for shade and used them to re-establish public transport in the country.

Barco de Totora, Peru

Also called Totora Boats, they have become an icon of Peru these reed watercrafts are created by the locals that resemble the form of a dragon. They say that these boats were used to ward off the evil in primeval Inca times. At present, these light and resilient boats cruise on the tranquil lakes of Lake Titicaca offering visitors a delightful experience to get across the massive and attractive expanse of water.

Chiva Express, Ecuador (And Colombia) Longtail Boat, Thailand

Longtail boats are an icon of Thailand. Originally they were used in the canals that ran through Bangkok – and although the canals have now been filled and replaced with roads, the boats are still prolific in the country. As the name suggests, they are long and slim – the ideal shape for canal cruising – due to the long rod in the back of the boat which holds up the motor. Locals use these boats like public transport and riding one is an experience you can’t miss on a trip to the country.

A traditional Latin American bus renovated into a train, the Chiva Express is an amusing form of public transit that offer tourists a thrilling journey through some of the country’s most picturesque spots. The joy of riding the Chiva is combined with the Trans-Andean rail, which takes you through the famous Devil’s Nose in the Andes highlands. The frequently changing scenario, snow capped peaks, plush valleys and hastening streams will make this rail journey an enjoyable experience.

Dog Sleds, Alaska (Also Norway)

Near the Arctic Circle, embark on a dog sledding voyage through the magnificent winter backdrops while you glide your way through a frozen canvas of snow. Lead by a pack of 4 to 6 dogs trained for speed and endurance, swish across the charming tracks on a bumpy canter to create an unforgettable experience. Although not a means of transport for the locals, this interesting transportation is exclusively offered to the tourists.

Bamboo Train, Cambodia

Locally known as a ‘Nori’, these Bamboo Trains are built using an electric generator engine and a makeshift (bamboo platform) for seating space that run on railway tracks at a speed up to 40km/h. The unmaintained railway tracks make for a bumpy ride and the closest you’ll get to luxury is sitting on a grass mat.Gear up for a bumpy ride as these train rides are cheap and is a once in a lifetime experience that you can’t miss.

Felucca, Egypt

Couch Bike, Canada

Traditional sailboats of the Egyptian Nile, these wooden boats sail through the inshore waters of the Red Sea. These boats have lateen-rigged sails and are a great way to experience the river Nile at a slower and quieter pace. The tranquil rhythm of the river with occasional stops to stride through fields and villages will leave you absorbed as you nap on the deck and unwind under the canvas canopy of the sailboat.

An undeniable style and an unusual galloping, Couch Bikes are literally couches that are mounted upon a pedaling bike. This example of transport intends to poke fun at the sedentary life and culture of humans but also exemplifies the scope of human power. Looked upon as an eco-friendly means of travelling, couch bikes allows you to be seated and pedal your way across cities, although knowledge of legality and traffic rules should be gained before you engage in this amusing experience.

As per the legend behind, it is said that, once Pushkara prayed Lord Brahma and asked Him for a boon to live in the sacred waters of his Kamandalu with the intention of providing purity to all the Theerthas (Rivers). Cultural beliefs: Why dip at Rajahmundry during Godavari Pushkarams?

The Godavari originates near Nasik in Maharashtra. It flows for 1,465 kilometres, first eastwards across the Deccan Plateau then turns southeast, entering the West Godavari district and East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, until it splits into two watercourses that widen into a large river delta and flow into the Bay of Bengal. So many sub rivers merged to the Godavari till Papikondalu (Papi Hills) near Rajahmundry. But after Papikondalu the River called as “Akhanda Godavari”. So at Rajahmundry the river is more sacred and powerful. Lakhs of devotees are expected to come to Rajahmundry from all over the world for this year’s pushkarams. Andhra Pradesh state has many temple towns on the banks of river Godavari. Basara in Adilabad district, kalaiswaram, Dharmapuri in karimnagar district, Badrachalam in khammam district, Rajahmundry, Antervedi in East Godavari district, kovvur, pattiseema in West Godavari district are some places prominently connected with river Godavari in Andhra Pradesh.
