During the consultation process, the community asked for better access at the interchanges along the expressway. The community highlighted the need for greater access at Curtis Road, Two Wells Road and Angle Vale Road. This has resulted in a decision to fund construction of additional ramps at these locations as part of the initial project, rather than at a later time.

This positive approach developed for the contract was a ‘first’ for a major SA Government contract and has been embraced by the project’s lead contractor, Fulton Hogan York Joint Venture. The Northern Expressway Project will bring significant benefits to South Australia and particularly the northern areas when the project is completed in 2010 and the local area is realising some of these benefits during construction.

The Northern Expressway Project is exceeding its targets for generating employment for young people and Aboriginal people in the Northern area.
people now, and generating interest in future careers in the engineering and construction industry with our schools and universities programs.”
The project’s target was for 10% of the workforce to be young people and Aboriginal people and a level of up to 13% has been achieved in some months.
The expressway team believes that employees and young visitors to the project will discover opportunities and a career path that will generate skills which can be used in building future projects.
The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) project team established the target within its formal contract to ensure the successful contractor made a commitment to provide local jobs for local people, and to establish contacts and methods to support the initiative.

Retired road builder Max Cooper of Salisbury East had a special interest in viewing the expressway construction site in close-up detail. For around 30 years prior to retirement Max was a Works Manager with Councils in the mid north of SA. Among projects he supervised were road re-alignments and safety upgrades on the old Main North Road around Gladstone, Georgetown and Clare. Max said he was amazed at the technology and global positioning equipment being used by machinery operators, as well as the digital animations showing a completed road based on engineering data.

“I am most impressed with the planning that has allowed works to move ahead so rapidly,” Max said.
If you would like to know more about the community room please contact the project team on 1300 658 621 or by email at northernexpressway@saugov.sa.gov.au
“People never see all the hidden things that must be done in advance like the undergrounding of services, water mains and power. “Good engineering is about minimising impact on local residents and I can see the fundamental work the managers have done in the planning. Max has one major regret that he was no longer building community infrastructure. ”I just wish we’d had satellite and aerial images and a computer road animation like they have today.”
“The successes we are achieving on this project will support the department’s recruitment campaign for a raft of future transport projects,” said Minister Conlon. “We are working in partnership with the Fulton Hogan York joint venture to provide real jobs and skills development for local
Among the delivery crew were Mario Cirillo, of Waterloo Corner, a sub contract prime mover driver with Andrews Transport, of Helps Road Burton and Justin Llewellyn, of Macclesfield, also a prime mover sub contractor. Workers with York Civil, the project partner with responsibility for bridge construction, included Casey Cullen, of Salisbury East, a leading hand carpenter and Mick Forrestal, a carpenter of Valley View. Completing this first Northern Expressway heavy lifting team was Barossa Valley based company AllTerrain Lifting Services of Tanunda. The DTEI careers campaign has a website to promote SA as a growth region for employment on major transportation projects. Link to this via www.northernexpressway.sa.gov.au The campaign message is: Get on board to help us drive SA’s transport revolution. It highlights SA Government plans to build Adelaide’s transport infrastructure over the next decade and the need for trained engineers, planners, project managers and other professions. It also promotes SA’s great lifestyle and work-life balance. www.northernexpressway.sa.gov.au

THE OF PL CITY AY REMEM FORD BER THE FALL S EN.
Caleb has lived or studied in the North for most of his young life. In the past year, he’s spent a lot of time in the Elizabeth Regional Centre, pursuing his passion for music at the Northern Sound System (NSS).
For younger people particularly, leisure options had been limited but these new developments have opened up opportunities that many young people, anywhere in Adelaide, could only dream of.
It’s there that he noticed first hand changes in the area.
Caleb agrees, “I don’t know what I’d be doing without this place (NSS). I want to be involved in music, cos’ hip hop and R’n’B are my thing. There was nothing around until this came about.
“The new cinemas and entertainment areas surprised me. It’s all good stuff, he adds.

Caleb’s talking about the growth in non-retail activities in Elizabeth – cinemas, bars, cafes and other dining options have provided a new and local experience for residents who previously had to travel outside of Playford to see a movie or eat at certain cafes. For residents further north, Munno Para now offers a variety of dining options too.
NSS provides young people, and any aspiring musicians, with the opportunity to participate in music training programs, lay down their own CDs and utilise rehearsal space. For the punters, the NSS provides a live music venue to hear local and interstate bands. All this is ‘music to the ears’ of Matthew
Pears, General Manager at City of Playford. The developments Caleb highlights have contributed to “ensuring that Elizabeth Regional Centre retains its position as the North’s most significant retail, commercial, community, education and regional hub, states Matthew.
These improvements have made it easier for people to get around in the area. There are exciting things happening in the Elizabeth Regional Centre, and even more exciting times to come with a new and improved Aquadome on its

Economic Prosperity
Community gets hands-on at Adams Creek wetland Janie Johnson practically bubbles over with enthusiasm when talking about the learning opportunities the Adams Creek wetland offers her St Thomas More School students. “Apart from learning about the water cycle and volunteering with the Waterwatch program, having this valuable resource right on our doorstep adds to the fun. We can get the children out and about on the spur of the moment, and they just love that, said Ms Johnson.
“It’s great to get support from local residents, and groups like Playford Landcare and Greening. It just shows that wetlands provide environmental and community benefits. As well as removing pollutants from stormwater, and providing wildlife habitat, this wetland is an attractive landscape feature with great recreation options.
Classes visit the site at least once a term, and conduct a water-testing program for Waterwatch. These visits have let the children see first hand an increase in both bird and insect life as the wetland further establishes itself since its 2006 launch.
“Another great benefit is our ability to harvest 80–100 mega-litres of stormwater per year, which is the same amount of water that it takes to fill 50 Olympic swimming pools. We inject captured stormwater into an underground aquifer, and later use it to irrigate reserves and parks such as Ridley Reserve and Fremont Park, said Adrian.
Adrian Swiatnik, capital works engineer for the City of Playford, has seen the local community take increasing pride and ownership over the wetlands.
Mark Temme, Group Manager for civil works, knows just how important projects like this are for short and long-term water management in the North.
“Reducing our reliance on the River Murray, and becoming more sustainable are just a few of the many reasons we’re so committed to the Waterproofing Northern Adelaide Project, which features Adam’s Creek as the first of 5 planned wetland sites, said Mark.
“Apart from learning about the water cycle and volunteering with the Waterwatch program, having this valuable resource right on our doorstep adds to the fun. Local students undertake water testing at Adams Creek.
Other Playford wetland sites will be in Andrews Farm, Munno Para and Andrews Farm South. “Let’s hope we can give the community even more opportunities to get hands-on with their own wetlands, and reap the rewards from the hard work of all the partners involved. These partners include the City of Salisbury, Adelaide and Mt Lofty Rangers Natural Resources Management Board, the Australian Government through the Sustainable Regions Program, and our State Government through the Catchment Management Subsidy Scheme, said Mark.

You’ve probably heard that the ‘Clipsal’ site in Bowden has been purchased by the Land Management Corporation (LMC).
Developing the Master Plan
Clipsal’s consolidation of operations into a new site in Gepps Cross has presented the opportunity to create a unique and exciting development on the 10.25 hectare site.
1. Strategic framework
Titled ‘Bowden Village’, the project will showcase international best practice in green sustainable living and transit-orientated development. The LMC has recently commenced a master planning process which will harness the skills, expertise, energy and creativity of a range of stakeholders and deliver on the State Government’s high aspirations for the site. Image below: An artist impression of the potential transformation of Third Street looking towards Park Terrace and the Adelaide CBD.
2. Area plan
The LMC is a State Government Corporation responsible for managing South Australia’s portfolio of land assets.
This is the first of a number of newsletters which are designed to provide information about the project and promote opportunities for you to become involved in the planning process.
“Dici beritati di dolorem imostrum facepror aut et tiae n tiae non sed tiae non sed on sed iteliquis rerum venis. Dici ber tiae non sed itati di dolorem im.
The Master Plan process comprises four defined stages which will be delivered between May and October 2009. These four stages are defined as:
As a local resident or land owner, your ideas and feedback will be important in the development of a plan for the future use of the site.
In October 2008 the Premier of South Australia, The Honourable Mike Rann, announced that the Government of South Australia would acquire the ‘Clipsal Site’ at Bowden and transform it into an inner-city, medium and high density, mixed use village.
www.lmc .sa.gov.a u/bowde n
LMC’s primary aim is to provide social, economic and environmental benefits to all South Australians, by creating, facilitating and developing a range of land-based opportunities.
About the project team
The study area
The Bowden Village Master Plan will be delivered in collaboration with the City of Charles Sturt, the Department for Planning and Local Government (DPLG) and the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI). Together with the LMC, these stakeholders form the Principal Stakeholder Group (PSG) for the project. A consortium of Hassell, a leading Australian architectural, planning and urban design firm, and Parsons Brinckerhoff, an international planning, environment and infrastructure firm, has been appointed to work on the Master Plan with the principal stakeholder group led by LMC.
Although there is an obvious focus on the Bowden Village ‘Clipsal’ site, it is important that the planning process considers the neighbouring environment.
3. Site plan 4. Implementation strategy Each of these stages will explore a range of questions which guide the design process. The graphic below outlines the questions, appropriate study area and community engagement activities assigned to each stage.

VISIONING WORKSHOP PLANNING WORKSHOP OPEN DAY
To achieve this, a broader study area (approximately 20 hectares) has been identified between Port Road, Park Terrace, Chief Street and Second/ Seventh Street.
Engagement with key stakeholders and the broader community is crucial to the successful planning and delivery of the Bowden Village project. During the first stage of the project, we are keen to meet with local residents and property owners. An initial Information Day is being held at the Hindmarsh Library on Saturday 23 May. Please drop in anytime between 1pm – 4pm to meet with members of the community engagement team and find out more about the project and how you can be involved.
An additional wider study area will also provide greater focus on issues such as transport networks, retail catchments and stormwater and will allow greater opportunities for the design of Bowden Village to enhance the local community. The map below shows each of these areas:
This will be followed by a Visioning Workshop, open to all members of the public, being held at the Woodville Town Hall on Tuesday 2 June from 7:00pm and 9:30pm. Our international experts… TBC… will help set the scene by presenting opportunities for the site. Community members will then be invited to share their vision for Bowden Village. To register your interest in attending this workshop, please contact the LMC on 1800 993 439 during office hours – is there an answering machine xxxxx Or email xxxxx@xxxxx.com.au

The Graduate School
A plan for success
In September the Faculty of Arts launched the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences takes shape (more on page 1)
Dean’s welcome Welcome to the second issue of ARTiculation for 2009 The largest and most exciting development for the Faculty of Arts this year is the creation of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was launched in September. Our new Graduate School will convey the prestige of the University of Melbourne and reflect the unique purpose of our graduate degrees - to help students learn to deepen and apply their knowledge and skills to real world environments and challenges. In that sense, we aim to have teaching, learning, research, collaborative work and social
spaces that signal to our students, staff and potential employers that the Graduate School is a bridge between university study and future careers. We also want to provide our staff and students with a dynamic environment for inquiry and learning through the provision of custom-designed and fitted teaching and learning spaces. You can read more about the graduate school later in this newsletter, but I hope you can visit our website or even the campus throughout the next twelve months to learn more about these exciting developments. Prof Mark Considine
In July, the Asia Institute hosted the two-day 2009 Melbourne Conference on China. More on page 7.
The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will offer a new and unique experience to students who have elected to specialise in Arts at the graduate level. It has been developed to create leaders with the knowledge, skills and passion to make a positive contribution to the world, while keeping ethics and the community in mind. Contemporary programs provide professional skills and training for careers in the public, private and community sectors. Its programs will foster social, political and cultural understanding, critical and creative thinking, and allow students to apply their skills and knowledge to real world situations.
Located in the historic Old Arts building at the heart of the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus, the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will provide a study environment to encourage collegiality and debate. Collaborative work and social spaces will allow students to network, exchange ideas, and socialise with fellow students. The Faculty hopes this will foster a strong cohort experience. Dedicated professional staff will provide high-level support and enrichment services to graduate students.
of Humanities and Social Sciences Old Arts in 2010 This summer, when students have finished their exams and handed in their final essays, builders will move in to start the Old Arts building’s first major construction project in 50 years. While being considerate of the buildings heritage listing, they will to create the physical site of the new Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. This will include purpose-built facilities and flexible learning environments to reflect the graduate school’s contemporary approach to teaching and learning. The Faculty of Arts looks forward to seeing graduate students occupying the centre and engaging in active debate.
The Executive Master of Arts The professionally focused Executive Master of Arts (EMA) will prepare students for a career in any area of leadership. It is the first of its kind in Australia and was developed in consultation with the business, government and community sectors. With Melbourne’s EMA, students can:

Step 4: Seeking Contrary Evidence
Step 5: maintain Control of the Interview
Remember Brian, my co-worker, who said, “I can tell within five minutes whether or not I’m going to hire them”? Brian had a gut feeling about people. There’s nothing wrong with having a gut feeling unless you let it guide all of your hiring decisions. Gut feelings are important but they can also lead to poor hiring decisions.
Equip your recruiters with pre-written and prepared questions (See Figure 2). In addition, use or create an evaluation form that lists each of the attributes along with an area for the recruiter to rate each of the student’s responses.
If, for example, you feel that the candidate you’re interviewing is arrogant, there are questions that you can ask to test your theory. For example: “John, tell me about a time when your confidence served you well during a recent internship.” Don’t stop there. Seek contrary evidence: “Okay, John, tell me about a time when your confidence hampered your success.”

WHAT’s HAPPENING
Eighty-six per cent of respondents to a recent survey were members of at least one social network and visit it four times a day.
Theme of ‘from island to global’ and international keynote speakers feature prominently throughout three-day conference.

The professional standing of career development practitioners is steadily advancing as a result of a number of important milestones and developments in Australia.

This is called seeking contrary evidence. You never want to get a one-sided picture of a candidate. Be sure to incorporate questions to balance the positive with the negative. Each time you ask a question that may reveal something negative, ask the student “What did you learn from that?” (See Figure 2 for information to better understand attributes, BBI questions and contrary evidence.)
Walking into an interview with a list of prepared questions is the best way to maintain control of the interview. Following are some tips to help you: • Be certain that all answers contain situation, action, outcome and learning.
Attribute
Behaviours
Questions
Contrary Evidence
Strong work ethic
Adheres to an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs during both good and bad times; acts in line with those values.
Can you tell me about a time when you felt you had to make an unpopular decision based on your beliefs and values?
Describe a situation in which you went against core values to accomplish something. What did you learn?
Team player
Able to create strong morale and spirit in her/his team; shares wins, successes, responsibility and accountability; fosters open dialogue.
Tell me about a time when you were able to find common ground when working in a team to achieve a result.
Tell me about a situation where you were unable to motivate a team to achieve a goal. What did you learn?
Creative
Comes up with new and unique ideas; easily makes connections among previously unrelated notions.
Tell me about a time when you looked beyond the obvious to find an unusual solution.
Can you tell me about a time when you were unable to come up with a creative way to solve a problem?
Honest, trustworthy and demonstrates integrity
Is widely trusted; is seen as direct, truthful individual; keeps confidences.
Describe a time when you told the truth when it would have been easier not to.
Tell me about a time when you didn’t admit to a mistake. What did you learn?
Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons to use behaviouralbased interviewing (other than its ability to help your organisation make better hiring decisions) is that students have come to expect it. If your recruiting team comes on campus unprepared and untrained in interviewing, students will know. Besides, candidates would rather get a job with a company that truly evaluated them rather than a company that simply ‘liked’ them.

• Seek contrary evidence. • Use silence (answering a BBI question takes time; don’t try to fill the space. Let the student think). • If the student rambles, interrupt and tell the student that you’d like to continue on with your questions so that you don’t run out of time. • If the student avoids direct answers or is silent for an extended period of time, you may move to closed questions and return to open-ended questions once he or she has regained composure.
HIGHLIGHT – BEHAVIOURAL-BASED INTERVIEWING According to Katharine Hansen, creative director and associate publisher of Quintessential Careers, behavioural-based interviewing is 55 per cent predictive of future on-the-job behaviour while traditional interviewing is only 10 per cent predictive.
