Venezuela is experiencing sustainable economic growth this year as the government directs more funds to social programs
Housing solutions advance
Despite what critics had said, Venezuela’s economy is on the rise. The first quarter of 2011 saw a 4.5% increase over last year and a rise in most industry and sectors in the South American nation. Venezuela’s own Central Bank and financial institutions expect solid, sustainable growth throughout the year. As part of ongoing policies based on social justice, the Chavez government is investing heavily in social programs and national production and development. | page 2
Venezuelans nationwide are participating in the recently launched “Grand Mission Housing Venezuela”, a major housing program seeking to solve an inherited crisis that has been aggravated during the past few months due to heavy rains that have caused tens of thousands of displaced. More than 2 million new homes are expected to be built over the next few years, with the aid of allied nations, such as China, Argentina, Russia, Belarus and Iran. | page 3

No foreign military bases in Venezuela
he Venezuelan government denied rumors this week regarding the existence of foreign military bases in the country. The emphatic rejection of such claims was made by Elias Jaua, Venezuela’s VicePresident, as well as Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Nicolas Maduro. Jaua confirmed that no foreign military facilities would be built in Paraguaná, a peninsula in the northwestern state of Falcon, or anywhere else within Venezuela’s territory, since any such move would violate provisions of the nation’s Constitution.
“Our policy is not attacking but defending the homeland, whether by land, air or sea”, declared Jaua. In recent days, several international media outlets and right-wing think tanks based in Washington, have spread rumors claiming Iran is building a military base in Venezuela to house nuclear missiles, which could be used against the United States. Such outrageous and unfounded claims, for which no evidence has been produced, seek to demonize the Chavez government and justify some type of intervention or action against Venezuela.
This type of dangerous demonization campaign against the Venezuelan government, based on distorted and unfounded information, is a clear attempt to influence public perceptions regarding the South American nation and classify it as a “threat” to US interests and regional security. The Chavez administration has made clear that it does not now, nor plan to, build any foreign military bases, or host any kind of weapons that could present a threat to its neighbors. Venezuela is a country of peace.
enezuela’s Martin Prado, an infielder for the Atlanta Braves, and Victor Martinez, a Detroit Tigers batter, were named Major League Baseball’s players of the week for the period that finished on May 15. Originally from the city of Maracay, he tallied an .846 slugging percentage and .517 on-base percentage. According to the daily, this is the third time Prado has been recognized as Player of the Week. Martinez led the Young Circuit in five games last week with .579 average, reported Últimas Noticias. His performance also included four doubles and two home runs, four walks and 11 runs batted in. The daily highlighted that this is the fourth time Martínez was chosen Player of the Week; the first time was in 2005 when he played for Cleveland Indiands.
