This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

‘Reflections- Diffusing Borders in Colour Motion and Form’
May 25th until Saturday June 22nd 2024
Monday - Saturday 10am -6pm at the Queen's Park Gallery
“Join us for a journey of ‘Reflections’, the first instalment of the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition at the Queen’s Park Gallery!
Under the overarching theme "Diffusing Borders in Color, Motion and Form", the first exhibition in our Season of Emancipation series bodies the principle of Sankofa. We look back to go forward.
We have on display a curated selection from the collection of the Central Bank of Barbados, the Barbados National Art Gallery, The Barbados Gallery of Art and Ms. Kathy Yearwood, a staunch supporter of the nation's Artists.
This beautiful exhibition meets nationally-approved conservation standards and features some of the best of the best in fine Art through the years, with a mix of media including drawings, paintings, ceramics mixed media and wood sculptures. The work spans the 5 decades. Our earliest piece on display is from 1976, by Edmund Gill called ‘The Dancers’ and our latest a 2023 Traditional Shaggy Bear costume by Michael Taitt.
Enjoy this collaborative showcase as we diffuse borders by working together. ℹ️For more details, contact us at 427-2345”
-National Cultural Foundation.
Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Exhibition Salutes 50 Years.
“The 50th anniversary of Barbados’ premier cultural festival is as good a time as any to reflect on its growth, its impact, what it means to the people, and how it has been able to breakdown existing borders among them. During this milestone golden anniversary of the festival, which falls within the Season of Emancipation, the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition takes centerstage.
The art being showcased in the series of three exhibitions at Queen’s Park Gallery under the overarching theme of “Diffusing Borders in Colour, Motion and Form” is “structured differently”. Reflections is the title of the first exhibition which opened to the public on May 25. It closes on June 22 and the public is being invited to view it at the Queen’s Park Gallery, Monday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The National Cultural Foundation’s Curator Oneka Small said this time around instead of an open call for artists, the pieces in this one focus on the work selected from national and a private collection.
“In this show, which is all collections, we’ve highlighted the past Crop Over winners from the Central Bank collection and they form the bulk of the collection that we have mounted. Along with that, we’ve included the work from the Barbados National Art Gallery, the Barbados Gallery of Art and Kathy Yearwood. This first show is like a look back at what went before and to highlight some of top work through the years,” said Small. The Curator also stated that over the last two years the focus of the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition was on trauma, slavery, the period of enslavement, and looking back. Reflections embodies the principles of Sankofa, one of which is looking back to look ahead.
“This year we wanted to look at where we are and determine how we could go forward as a multicultural society and so, we incorporated this into our planning. In executing those plans we took another step because we wanted to see how we could not only have the art but the collaborations and how we could diffuse borders by working together.
“The Barbados Gallery of Art, the Barbados National Art Gallery and the Central Bank have work in storage that’s not normally seen and we wanted to showcase it so people could see the work the different institutions and an individual have been doing for the good of art in Barbados, vis-à-vis collecting art,” Small said.
Seeing the idea come alive in Reflections which spans five decades, has been “a really good experience,” she added. The work includes a variety of art such as paintings, drawings, ceramics and mixed media centred around the theme. The second exhibition – Contemporary Offerings - officially opens later this month and while it is based at Queen’s Park Gallery, the Curator said other galleries, such as Caribbean Gallery of Art, Winifred Cumberbatch Gallery, Frangipani Art Gallery, and others, have been invited to participate in the celebration.
“This exhibition is also different because we usually invite artists to show in one space but again, we are promoting collaborative effort and will have people showing in different spaces. We have reached out to the different galleries to ask if they can curate shows with their group of artists on the theme so that we would have all the different art exhibitions across the island. Artists’ studios will also be open across the island during this third event. This exhibition ends on July 27.”
The third one in the series is Reconnections. (PR)

“The exhibition ‘Something to Say' is exactly as it presents itself. Every artist whether subconsciously or by intention is telling a story through their art. The exhibition 'Something to Say' is an opportunity for artists to get those words off of their chest and onto the walls. Titles that spark discussion have been encouraged. A single paragraph that gives the viewer a window into the themes chosen.”

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
