In a site as difficult as the Bronx, resistance to change and gentrification, for this project we decided to create a blend of housing typologies and to challenge the definition of luxury and structural representation in a residential space. We sought to explore a variety of structural elements including the space frame, the truss, the box truss, the x-frame, and combined them with several housing types to provide an equitable living experience for those who reside not just in the tower, but also in the horizontal skyscraper and the bridge. Each element provides access to an original piece of program, from a pool, to an interior courtyard garden/walkway, to a variety of shared balconies. However, all of the program elements are shared by the residents. Semester: Fall 2016 Class: Core III Instructor: Hilary Sample Partner: Lincoln Antonio School: GSAPP

We attempted to explore a variety of model making techniques, replicating a variety of different materials to emulate real world weathering and textures to define luxury. We explored mesh and corten steel, seeking to create these materials out of wood, plastic, foam, and aluminum. We began to question if luxory was defined by light or material and how these things complimented each other. On the left are early prototype models of the final design showing our process.

Above is the first study model we made of the project out of paper and basswood. The red model represents a structural visualization of the final project. We made it entirely by hand out of basswood. The entire project is three feet wide and one foot tall.

The intention of the East River Aquarium is trifold. 1) To give the inhabitants of Stuyvesant Town a public aquarium in order to keep travel time to all age entertainment at a minimum, 2) to create a space that places the visitors inside the habitat so that they can view the fish, be viewed by the fish, and eliminate any and all barriers between observer, and observee, 3) to keep a visual history of the state of the east river and allow visitors of the aquarium to watch the reclamation of their river from literal “garbage dump to aquatic landscape oncemore. Additional goals, 1) to become part of a research facility to restore the east river, 2) to create exhibitions showcasing the prime state of east river aquatic life. CONCEPT: How were pioneering techniques in film first percieved by the original audience? More importantly, how can architecture be used to preserve, or emulate the sensation first felt that generated the emotion which provoked critics and audiences to place such importance upon certain momentsand scenes in film. INSPIRATION: Vertigo, by Alfred Hitchcock Vertigo is the perception of motion where none exists. Filmed in December 1957 with location footage of San Francisco, Hitchcock was one of the first directors to take advantage of the dolly zoom, now colloquially known as the “vertigo zoom to change perception and disorient the audience. STRUCTURAL CONCEPT: Use of the truss and cantilever to compress and expand space for privacy and the filtration of light. For this project, I began to consider the subway platform as a place for respite—how can one use the time before travel to center oneself before the journey at hand. I studied various modular projects in an attempt to reconcile my interest in large scale urban city projects that could be duplicated across various platforms with the desire to create various sized spaces for diffusion of energy. I began to think of the meditation pods as temporal interventions, linking the time before and after travel. Each pod adapts itself to the user, creating an atmosphere for the traveler of peace to either start or end their journey with.

The program of this building included a theater and a brew pub. We sought to include a variety of facades and sustainable techniques and created the project solely in REVIT to learn the ins and outs of the program. We worked on structure, facades, MEP, and detailing.
