A Message

from the Artistic Director

Exposure to the performing arts opens new avenues to learning and living. Multidisciplinary arts programs invite students to view the world and appreciate differences that make each of us unique. Our school-based and community-based performing arts programs challenge students to be creative and cooperative, while our Dance In Schools program offer new outlets for personal expression to students who might otherwise struggle to express themselves. Students schooled in the arts learn acceptance, teamwork and self-expression, and carry these lessons into their lives as young adults. Research demonstrates that the arts are vital to a well-rounded education because they promote critical thinking, enhance spatial and temporal perception, foster positive social skills and provide powerful motivation for students to excel in school. Such education calls for students to process information verbally, aurally, kinesthetically—so that every child can succeed in the classroom and in life. Through a culturally diverse array of performances, classes, residencies, and camps in everything from music and dance to film, literary arts and theatre, the Children’s Theatre offers children many possibilities for learning about the world through the arts. Our interactive classes, workshops, camps and initiatives spark children’s imagination and creativity, cultivate critical thinking and problem solving skills, promote selfdiscipline, and kindle a lifelong interest in the arts. Join us for a year filled with excitement.

outreach Season 2016 – 2017 Elementary school

The elementary school outreach program is an excellent opportunity for PAUSD children to enjoy the world of theatre right at their own school! Under the guidance of the Children’s Theatre professional staff, children learn how to fill all the roles essential to producing a play. In addition to acting, singing and dancing, students take on vital back stage duties such as stage managing, handling props, or running the sound and light boards. There are no adults in the wings at a Children’s Theatre outreach play … the children have it all under control! Developed by African slaves in Brazil centuries ago, today Capoeira is practiced by adults and children all over the world. In the class, youth gain flexibility, strength, and confidence as they become more graceful in the basic Capoeira movements, learned first in isolation and then put together in a “jogo” or game. The class is great fun and a good choice for children of all athletic abilities. Parents can enroll with their children! 10 classes. $132R/$151NR Tuesdays Tuesdays

Kids and Family Capoeira Class Capoeira is an exciting combination of martial arts, dance and gymnastics. 10 classes. $132R/$151NR Lucie Stern Ballroom

Arts Education is invaluable! The arts are an invaluable part of every child’s education! Studies show that students involved in the arts tend to have higher academic performance and better standardized test scores—nearly 100 points higher on the SAT than those not involved in the arts, according to a separate study conducted by The College Board. Academic gains are not the only benefits. Theatre brings about improved self-confidence, better public speaking skills, and the ability to work with an ensemble in cooperative ventures. Theatre also enhances a child’s ability to work towards a consensus, to navigate around differences or obstacles, and to achieve goals. Studying theatre can be a great starting point for careers in law, teaching, and politics. The ability to speak confidently in front of a group is an asset in any career.
