I

t is hard to believe that we are already into the second month of 2011! In keeping with this traditional time of love, this edition of CITY is brimming with delectable delights to tantalise the romantics among us. There are tips aplenty for those planning a romantic outing for Valentine’s Day, while our features on gorgeous lingerie, bridal gowns and feminine footwear are sure to provide inspiration for the ladies. We take a look at pairing chocolate with wine, whisky and brandy, and offer some mouth-watering ideas to try on your own or with a loved one. Andy Mark recommends a choice of elegant wedding cars and Rose McClement treats us to tips for decadent boudoir décor in the bedroom. We also chatted to the delightful Hlubi Mboya of Isidingo fame about love and Cape Town, her summer playground. This month’s property focus is on the many gracious freestanding houses that can be found in the precinct. These range from the first homes to be built at Century City, west of Ratanga Road, to the luxurious three bedroomed villas on a private island neighbouring Intaka Island nature conservation area. On a celebratory note, we were thrilled to hear that the turnaround strategy being employed in recent years at Sinenjongo High School (reported on in January’s issue of CITY) has exceeded all expectations. At the school in Joe Slovo Park (down the road from Century City), 43 of the 44 matric students

3

of 2010 – just under 98 per cent – passed, with the one unsuccessful candidate having being granted supplementary exams in science and maths. This is a huge improvement on 2008 when only 27 per cent of learners passed matric; and 2009, when the pass rate was 44 per cent. It is also way ahead of the Western Cape Education Department’s target of a 60 per cent pass rate for the year, and bears testimony to the success of the public private sector joint initiative to turn Sinenjongo around. The quality of the results has also improved dramatically. Whereas most of the subject marks were in the 0-29 per cent (failure) bracket in 2009, only a handful are there now, with the vast majority being above 50 per cent and quite a substantial number achieving 60 to 70 per cent with nine subject As. Now that’s worth celebrating. CITY congratulates the staff, learners, the Western Cape Education Department and major sponsors, the Rabie Property Group, and wish this year’s 88 matriculants all the very best. Happy reading.

INTERVIEW

love is in the air

we speak to actress Hlubi Mboya

love

is in the air 8

Hlubi Mboya by Angelique Ruzicka

Actress Hlubi Mboya has nothing but love for her country and its people. Personally, she’s hoping that 2011 will also be a year filled with surprises and romance. Angelique Ruzicka catches up with the Isidingo star to find out what other projects she’s been working on and discovers that her passions reach beyond acting. Hlubi Mboya is best known for her role as Nandipha Sithole in the SABC3 soap Isidingo, which she has played since 2000. If she’s tired of acting in the same role for the last ten years she doesn’t show it. “It’s my bread and butter and I love the character very much. I’ve been playing her for several years now and I am still passionate about my role,” she said. She explained that her role has opened a lot of doors for her and enabled her to do much good. With her character diagnosed as HIV positive, it has put a spotlight on Aids and the actress has embraced her role of raising awareness and educating people about the disease. It’s enabled her to travel across the African continent to places such as Tanzania and Zambia as an HIV/Aids ambassador. “I have been approached as an agony aunt and I’ve been able to help out on a grass roots level. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart. It’s important to convey the positive aspects of the HIV virus, such as telling people that it’s not a death sentence anymore and demystifying it is very important to me.”

INTERVIEW

love is in the air

we speak to actress Hlubi Mboya

She also highlighted the need for awareness of HIV/Aids through her work for Nelson Mandela’s charity 46664 and is an ambassador for the United Nations’ World Food Programme. “I do a lot of charity work to feed the hungry and clothe the poor and to make the world a better place,” said Hlubi. Besides acting on the daily soap and her charity work, Hlubi has also landed roles in films. Her most recent film involved her taking on the role of prostitute Funeka Yeka in A Small Town Called Descent, directed by Jahmil Qubeka. It’s her fourth film and focuses on xenophobia. In December, Hlubi returned from Dubai where she was attending the Dubai International Film festival to promote her new film, which she started working on three years ago. “It is about xenophobic attacks in South Africa. It’s got a fantastic cast (she stars alongside veteran South African actor Vusi Kunene, Paul Buckby and Fana Mokoena). I am very excited about it and its release in May 2011 [in South Africa]. It’s a dramatic movie and really entertaining and that’s what I love about it.” She’s glad that her role was again highlighting a controversial issue. “As I am sure you realise, I am very passionate about my continent and Africa is for Africans. If I can show this passion through my art, then my job is half way done,” she added. She feels the South African film industry is also making an impact on the international stage and gaining more traction. “I believe we have just as much talent as the rest of the world. I am a positive person but I am also realistic. I think we have great African stories to tell and that we can be among the best,” she said.

“I believe we have just as much talent as the rest of the world. I am a positive person but I am also realistic.” In 2008, the talented star was one of ten celebrity contestants to star in SABC2’s Strictly Come Dancing reality competition. Her coach was dance partner Khutso Khunou and she describes her time on the show as the best time of her life. “You know I love to dress up and the costumes were amazing. I completely fell in love with Latin American dancing. It’s very good for the body and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

10

When she’s not on a film set, Hlubi relaxes at home in Johannesburg with her partner Kirsten Arnold and her adopted pet cat Tigga, which she said one day took a liking to them and moved in. “It sleeps with us, eats with us and it gets washed. It’s our adopted baby and eats the best food.” But Hlubi is Cape Town born and bred and she makes sure she makes a trip back down to the Mother City as often as she can. “I am from Langa in Cape Town and went to Rustenberg High School and studied at UCT. I studied Third World politics and labour law and dropped out because I fell in love with the city of Johannesburg. I fell in love with its people and potential and here I am ten years later in the City of Gold.” She affectionately refers to Cape Town as her “summer playground”. This summer she made her way down to Cape Town from Joburg together with her brother and boyfriend in her Freelander. “It absolutely kicks ass,” she said when asked about its performance. “When I went down to Cape Town for my holiday, it was an absolute beast on the road and I think I may have got a few fines as I really put my foot down on the pedal.” She said her 4x4 is good for now but that she is really looking forward to the launch of Range Rover’s Evoque, which she is promoting as a ‘City Shaper’. “My latest campaign for Range Rover and its new Evoque 4x4 is helping to put Johannesburg and South Africa on the map. The crux of the campaign is to promote the people and the vibe of Johannesburg. Three other phenomenal people and I (fashion entrepreneur Craig Jacobs; Siphiwe Mpye, deputy editor of GQ magazine; and Dr Sarah Britten, a strategic planning director, blogger and writer) from Johannesburg are called City Shapers and we represent Joburg in this global campaign. [Being on the campaign] has opened my eyes to social networking and people being able to get hold of others on Twitter and Facebook,” she said.

When asked what she hoped this year would bring, she insisted that happiness was most important as well as good health, fame and fortune. She hinted that things could get more serious between her and her long-time boyfriend of eight years and that she is already getting some pressure from family to have children. “My parents love him to bits and they want more grandchildren (her sister currently has two children). That’s the pressures of family life, but it’s all good. Family life is very much a part of me.” But it’s clear she’s not one for letting the man do all the work when it comes to romance. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, she is planning something special and intent on using her skills in the kitchen. “I love the fact that the world is celebrating love on the same day. I don’t want to buy into the whole commercial aspect so I am going to spoil my man with a three-course meal instead with some chocolate for dessert and a seafood dish as a starter. I am convinced I was a chef in my previous life as I love to cook and eat. I have a gut feeling this may be a very special year for the both of us, so hold thumbs for us Cape Town, hold thumbs!”

Romance

roma and the City

Top 10 activities for couples this Valentine’s Day

T

o many, Valentine’s Day conjures up images of love, romance and decadence. It is a time when couples embrace their love and devotion to each other, while singles run for the hills. Indeed, Valentine’s Day can be an emotional day for many – whether coupled or not. While Paris boasts the title of most romantic city in the world, Cape Town basks in its own glow of being one of the most beautiful and enchanting cities. With the majestic mountain at its helm, it is easy to fall in love (or in lust) in this magical place.

A simple drive around the coast can turn even the most discerning customer’s heart to jelly. Hot air ballooning is popular in the winelands, and offers a unique and romantic adventure in one of the most beautiful locations in South Africa. For more information on winelands ballooning, visit http://www. extremescene.co.za/ballooning.php 4. Scuba diving Another extreme sport combining love with adventure is scuba diving and is an ideal way to get your blood pumping this Valentine’s Day. The waters of the Western Cape are teeming with marine life, and scuba diving presents the perfect opportunity to explore this unknown world in ‘depth’.

2. Horse-riding in Noordhoek Noordhoek is popular for its miles of sunkissed sands, pristine waters and, of course, its horse-rides. Nothing says romance more than galloping down the beach with your loved one, wind in your hair, and the glow of another perfect African sunset in the distance. The Noordhoek area is also popular for

Contact the Cape Town Carriage Company at 082 575 5667 or e-mail info@ctcco.co.za.

6. Boat cruise Book an intimate boat cruise and enjoy your most cherished moments at sea, sipping bubbly and listening to the call of the seagull in the distance. 8. Chocolate and wine tasting Combining two of life’s greatest pleasures, Waterford Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands introduces this incredibly unique and tantalising experience. Chocolate and wine tasting offers the connoisseur a uniquely flavourful experience with custom-made chocolates complemented by Waterford’s red and dessert wines. For this decadent experience, telephone the Waterford Wine Estate on +27 021 880 0496, e-mail info@waterfordestate.co.za or visit the website at www.waterfordestate.co.za.

7. Helicopter flights Helicopter flights offer a unique experience to couples – sightseeing from a different perspective. Whether you are taking in the tapestry of colour flying above the winelands, or enjoying the fresh sea breeze along the coast, a helicopter flight with your loved one will open your eyes, and your heart, to greater things. Contact Huey Helicopter Flights at +27 021 419 8951 for more information.

9. Pampering at Century City Century City is home to numerous health and beauty spas and salons, so offer your loved one a beauty treat at Anniques, Century Spa, Tres Joli, Life Day Spa, Perfect Reflections, Premier by Dead Sea or DNB Dream Nails, to name a few.

10. Bridal Fair at Canal Walk Canal Walk celebrates the 10th annual Bridal Fair this February, and while it may be a little late for Valentine's Day (it takes places 25-27 February), it is a must-visit for engaged couples looking for romantic and unique ideas for their wedding. With over 150 wedding displays and great prizes up for grabs, including one of five designer wedding gowns, this bridal fair is not to be missed. For more information on the Bridal Fair at Canal Walk, contact Cheryl Wade Events at +27 021 914 2852 or e-mail cheryl@cwe.co.za.

Portable

pleasures

Nobody can deny the deliciousness of strawberries, champagne and fine quality chocolate – not to mention the brownie points these treats will score. Use this guide to create your own date with decadence.

22

Portable pleasures Why not pack a basket and head outside in the gorgeous Cape Town summer weather to the beach, Kirstenbosch Gardens or a find a spot along the canal? Picnic checklist: • Tablecloth to spread out on the ground for your picnic snacks. • Blankets or pillows for comfortable seating. • A sharp knife, serving spoons and eating utensils. • Plates, cups and glasses. (Champers tastes infinitely better in a pretty fluted glass.) • Can opener and corkscrew. • Matches and candles if you are planning to be out after dusk. • Plastic bags for the bin and some jiffy bags for leftovers. • Paper towels and wet wipes. • Hats and sun umbrella.

Loveable tart From fruity and sweet to spicy and cheesy, baked goods make wonderful gifts this time of year, and are suited to sharing. (Get your date to kiss the crumbs off your lips.) Pop into Limnos Bakers, 156 LL (+27 021 555 4681) at Canal Walk, to stock up on confectionery items ranging from desserts, pastries, cakes and tarts.

The Century City Ferry operates from 10h00 until 16h00. For more information or to book a boat ride (at R30 each it’s a bargain), contact +27 021 552 6889. Bubbly Champagne by any other name would taste as sweet. Bubbles in your drink go straight to your head, but then that’s the point, isn’t it? Stock up on sparkling wine and your favourite spirits at Aroma, 277 LL, (+27 021 551 7511) or The Liquor Store, 131 LL, (+27 021 551 7563/7) at Canal Walk Shopping Centre. Spice Indian food is sensual and fun to eat. You can – in fact, you are encouraged to – use your hands for the naan, sambals and so on. So lick your fingers and let the spiciness get your serotonin levels pumping; perfect date food. Book a table at the new Passage to India restaurant, 427 La Piazza at Canal Walk, by calling +27 021 555 4790.

Oysters Casanova, the legendary lover, would eat 50 raw oysters for breakfast. Oysters, especially the ones plucked straight off the rocks (instead of cultivated in a tank), are excellent sources of several minerals, including iron, zinc and selenium, and Vitamin B12. The role of these minerals in certain bodily functions (ahem) may explain the humble oyster’s saucy reputation. Raw oysters are also high in D-aspartic acid and N-methylD-aspartate, which increased testosterone levels in one study on male rats. Um, yeah. So while science is not conclusive, snack on a freshly cracked oyster anyway. Try oysters from Cape Town Fish Market, 485 UL (+27 021 555 1950) at Canal Walk.

Chocolate If the answer is chocolate, the question is irrelevant. The proper stuff, while expensive, is definitely worth it. Cocoa solids contain alkaloids such as theobromine and phenethylamine, which have been linked to serotonin levels in the brain. Some research found that chocolate, eaten in moderation, can lower blood pressure. Any excuse, really! Get your sweet stash at the supermarkets or look in Sweets from Heaven, 61 LL (+27 021 555 3195) or Sweet Centre, B5 LL (+27 021 552 0016) at Canal Walk. Strawberries Some nutritionists believe that strawberries are as close as you can get to the perfect fruit. They are high in antioxidants, have little sugar, contain no fat and have a low GI. They are reputed to boost energy levels, slow the signs of ageing, prevent colds, hay fever and asthma, and help with hangovers; plus their alleged aphrodisiac qualities. Go strawberry picking at Woolworths Foodstore Colosseum +27 (0)21 526 2011, or Woolworths, 267 LL (+27 021 555 9911), Pick n Pay, 129 LL (+27 021 555 0255) or Checkers, 11 LL (+27 021 528 7040) at Canal Walk Shopping Centre. Irresistible Buy a punnet of seasonable strawberries. Halve each strawberry and drizzle them with balsamic vinegar (it sounds odd, but trust us) and sprinkle sugar over the top. The vinegar brings out their tartness and the sugar keeps them sweet. Let them marinade for about 30 minutes and serve with mascarpone cheese or thick cream.

Espresso with

a kick

One of the many bonuses to living in the Mother City is its proximity to world-class winelands. A little further afield, however, is De Krans, situated in the heart of the Klein Karoo. This award-winning port winery in Calitzdorp recently added to its range of dessert wines with the release of the De Krans Espresso. Prepared using the two main port varietals of Touriga Naçional and Tinta Barocca, Espresso has a sugar content of 92g/â„“ and underwent extended wood maturation in 300-litre French oak barrels before bottling. This unique wine has a deep ruby red colour with aromas of freshly ground coffee and dark berry fruit. It has a solid structure with a lingering, aromatic finish. It is best

served slightly chilled in summer, but a bottle will last you ages so you can sip it at room temperature this winter, too.

This unique wine has a deep ruby red colour with aromas of freshly ground coffee... De Krans Espresso is not quite a port, even though it is has been produced using

29

the classic port varietals, and it contains no coffee. Nevertheless, this distinctive combination of complementary flavours and aromas is the perfect dessert to end off a delicious meal. The De Krans Espresso, in a 375 ml frosted glass bottle, is available at most retail outlets nationwide and retails for approximately R55. Wedding day

wheels by Andy Mark

It’s your big day and getting to the church on time is a priority. While your wedding day wheels should fit right in with the theme you (along with your wedding planner and your future mother-in-law) have come up with, it is vital that you balance practical issues with romantic rationale. Uncle Vic’s restored 57 Chevy might fit in perfectly with the retro-Cuban themed reception, and be the very car your folks sprayed ‘just married’ onto, but do you really want to take a chance on the ancient starter motor refusing to budge on the morning of your wedding? And while a horse-drawn carriage evokes old fashioned elegance, somewhat less elegant is the fact that horses do their business whenever they feel the urge. Add to the mix a swinging tail ... and I don’t think I need paint that picture any further. This is the one day when calmness and reliability is paramount; you have enough on your plate as it is. Bearing this in mind, CITY motoring editor Andy Mark selected two premium rides for our brides in February.

Mercedes S350 BlueTEC and BMW 740i

Mercedes s350 bluetec

Mercedes s350 bluetec

First off is the magnificent and ecofriendly Mercedes S350 BlueTEC. With plenty of grunt to get you to the chapel on time, this popular S class Mercedes, now with the latest BlueTEC ... err ... tech, will ensconce the bride in comfort and safety. Naturally, the idea is to look good too and here the Merc doesn’t disappoint. Masses of rear seat space mean that even the biggest bridal train is accommodated with ease. The leather seats and climate controlled air-conditioning provide the perfect environment no matter what the weather is doing outside, and the class-leading sound system will play Chris Cornell’s Euphoria Morning with such clarity, it will calm the most shattered of nerves. The biggest talking point of the BlueTEC diesel S350 is its unbelievably low emissions, nitrogen oxides in particular. The engine boffins at Mercedes-Benz designed a system to inject an aqueous urea solution (urea can be found in urine, sweat and blood but theirs is called Ad Blue

38

and is synthetically manufactured by heating ammonium carbamate) into the exhaust flow from a tank situated under the rear seat. The result is a process that converts up to 80 per cent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The upshot of all this is a car that accelerates to 100 km/h in a whisper over seven seconds, runs to an (electronically governed) 250 km/h top-end and puts out a massive 650 N.m of torque – all while meeting the strict European emission goals under EU6 due to be implemented by 2014. The trick, of course, is for the bride to find which family member has one in his garage! The car is so much fun to drive that getting your favourite uncle to play chauffeur at the wedding shouldn’t be a problem at all. If you can’t find an uncle with an S-class in his fleet, you could always point him to the Mercedes dealership in Century City. There he could be driving away with one of his very own for around R21 000 pm* over 60 months.

BMW 740i

The next wedding chariot of choice is the BMW 740i. The big beemer has loads of room in the rear and is crammed with high-tech goodies designed to keep our favourite uncle and blushing bride entertained and in comfort all the way to the chapel door. Just a word to the wise: leave home early. This BMW with its startling 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds, (electronically governed) top-end of 250 km/h and race-car handling is sure to leave our bride breathless and begging Uncle Vic to take the long way around – just one more time.

Hire If your shake of the family tree has failed to turn up suitable uncle/car combinations, an alternative is to hire something truly exotic for the day. MK Exotic Cars and Lifestyle Centre situated in the Gateway Centre in Century City offer both car rental and chauffeur-driven options from an array of exquisite automobiles.

The 740i is something of an anomaly in the range. The sweet twin turbo in-line six puts out prodigious amounts of horsepower and yet, because it is so much lighter than the top of the range 7 series hybrid, delivers near the same or better fuel economy.

drive. I would love to see it slug it out with the 760iL around a tight racing circuit like Killarney, where I suspect the 740i would hold its own easily against the more powerful V12. The BMW seven series sports the latest version of the BMW i-Drive system which has come of age and is intuitive to use, placing controls, entertainment and information in the palm of the driver’s hand. The dashboard is easy-to-read, and when considering the technology built into the seven series (from four-wheel steering to those incredible engines), one can appreciate how the engineers have kept things simple for even the most technophobic driver. This superb sedan will set you back around R19 200 on a straight 60-month lease.

And while the in-line six from the 740i can’t match the flagship 760iL 12-cylinder big brother for outright getup-and-go, it feels agile and exciting to

Decadent ornate, opulent and sensuous

boudoirs

boudoirs Rose McClement | Interior Design Expert – Design Monarchy | rose.m@designmonarchy.co.za

T

he dictionary definition of boudoir is ‘a lady’s private sitting room or dressing room’. Interestingly, the term is derived from the French verb bouder, meaning ‘to sulk’. Apparently young ladies were sent to their boudoirs to go and mope in private. Who would have thought of that association today? More intriguing though is how the interpretation of a boudoir has come to denote a style of bedroom furnishing that is ornate, opulent and sensuous. The look is heavily inspired by the Renaissance and particularly French bedroom styles, and more recently includes French country cottage style.

40

The boudoir style In the boudoir it’s all about ambience, ambience, ambience. Images of over-thetop glamour, sensuality, intimacy, dark chocolate, red roses and the like come to mind. Your mind is swept away to scenes from Moulin Rouge and Marie Antoinette. Layering To achieve a really effective boudoir style, layering of textures, objects and tones is essential. Your floor covering would be one layer; the paint colour or wallpaper another; and patterns on fabrics would complete the look. Art on the wall, collections of objects d’art on tables, lamps, books, bed linen – all of these add further character to the room. Textures/tones and furnishings A more classical boudoir would in the Versailles Moulin Rouge style, with plush, deep velvet fabrics (patterned and plain); rich silk fabrics on lampshades, scatter cushions and bed throws; and not forgetting that damask wallpaper (nonnegotiable). The furniture, such as a deep-buttoned headboards, pedestals and ottomans are very much along the lines of Louis XV. Chairs will have a slightly curved leg, otherwise known as cabriole. The decadent finish on these pieces is gilt, dark stained wood or rich paint. The last layer will be the accessories: decadent mirrors with curly frames; silver and reflective ornaments; lamp bases; vases and all manner of collectables. Fragranced candle collections in varying sizes, colours and holders will enhance the sensuousness of the space. Allow your creative instincts to surface, take the time to group your accessories together, and don’t forget the chandelier! The floors should be covered in deep piled rugs which embrace the feet. Look at applying deep red colours, rich burgundy, pink, royal blue, grey and gold. For a more masculine touch, work with black, silver, white and purple.

French country style If you find the strong textures and tones of the classic boudoir style too overwhelming you can always opt for the fresher French country style. The fabrics are soft, flimsy voiles and natural linens and silks, complemented by delicate floral patterns. The furniture is similar but utilises paint tones in creams, very pale yellows and off-white with an antique finish.

41

Linen has neutral tones but soft, muted colours can be introduced or a glimpse of glamour added with a touchable throw and scatter cushions. Now that you’re inspired, go shopping and create your perfect bedroom chamber.

W

hile many are familiar with the high rise apartment blocks at Century City, not all are aware that the precinct also boasts many gracious, free-standing family homes. Five-hundred and fifty-three of them to be precise. The first homes to be built in the Century City precinct were in Century Place, a security village of 49 two- and three-bedroomed freehold units set in landscaped gardens which were developed on the western side of Ratanga Road in the late 1990s. This was before Century City had become an established and sought-after residential destination and homes were competitively priced at between R375 000 to R425 000 to lure buyers to the then relatively unknown

area. These buyers have enjoyed substantial capital returns on their properties which now easily fetch between R1.6 million and R2.5 million on the resale market. Century Place was followed by Century View, a development of 365 free-standing homes also on the western side of Ratanga Road which were developed over a number of years with initial selling prices of around R650 000. These properties are now changing hands at around R1.4 million to R1.6 million with the highest price realised being just over R3.7 million. The next development to include free-standing homes was the award-winning Bougain Villas which comprises 85 houses and 312 sectional title apartments in 16 blocks of varying heights and configurations. Here buyers had a wide choice of designs by leading architect Gisele

43

Vanderstraeten who tailored each home to maximise the potential of its individual erf and, wherever possible, to provide northfacing patios and pergolas. These homes, which were initially priced from R950 000 through to just under R2.2 million, are now worth around R1.3 million and R2.6 million respectively. The development, by the Rabie Property Group, was named the top residential development in the 2009 SAPOA Awards for Innovative Excellence in Property Development. There is no doubt that the most exclusive address for free-standing homes at Century City is Waterstone Isles, a development of 54 contemporary villas on a private man-made island neighbouring the unique 16-hectare Intaka Island wetlands reserve. John Chapman of developers, the Rabie Property Group, said that the value of these rare properties will benefit not only from their unique relationship to the wetlands reserve and the water, but from their scarcity. “There will certainly be no similar residential project at Century City again – this really is a one-off. That rarity alone will ensure solid capital appreciation. However, it’s only when you fully understand the lifestyle benefits of this location and the architectural excellence of these houses, that the real growth potential can be grasped.”

44

Century View

Accessed by a bridge manned round-theclock by security personnel, and set in the greater security network of Century City itself, Waterstone Isles is a sanctuary of safety and tranquillity, yet it shares in the convenience of a model new urban estate, being in easy walking distance of all the amenities of Century City. The houses have been expertly designed by MAC Architects to create the intimate relationship between home and water that makes Waterstone Isles so special. Cleverly designed for maximum use of space, views and light, these homes can be tailored to suit the specific needs of individual buyers, both in the layout and the finishes. The contemporary nature of the architecture is expressed in its clean, uncluttered lines, harmonious spaces that open into each other, and in its choice of materials that combine modern, high-tech substances like steel and glass with natural materials like timber and stone, which lend richness and warmth.

Waterstone Isles

Century View

Waterstone Isles is part of the larger Waterstone development which includes 182 sectional title apartments and 13 townhouses which also picked up the top residential development award from SAPOA in 2010. It is sold on a plot-and-plan basis and, although working off one of six basic plans, every house is unique, because the developers have worked with each of the buyers to configure the space to meet their individual requirements. The basic choices include two or three bedrooms (all en suite), and single or double storey. A typical three-bedroomed villa includes an open-plan entertainer’s kitchen with scullery, a dining room opening into a living room with great flow through to an outdoor entertainment area. They are all built on the banks of the canal overlooking the water, with optional swimming pool and jetty. The first floor consists of a workspace, suitable as a sewing room, studio or home office, and three magnificent en-suite bedrooms.

Sizes range from single-storey homes of 180 square metres to the double-storey villas at 366 square metres. All houses include a double garage and generous visitor parking. Only 11 opportunities remain for purchasers – eight plots and three built showhouses. Initial selling prices were between R2.4 million and just over R3.8 million with homes currently been sold for between R3.2 million and R4.7 million. Buyers looking for an ideal spot to raise the family should move in on the action in Century City soon.

Right in the heart of Century City, opposite the banks of Intaka Island, is a hive of activity burgeoning with things to do, places to see and people to meet. If you have not already, don’t wait to discover the hub of Century City and all it has to offer. The focal point is Central Park, a 4500m² grassed oval, where a wide array of sporting events, corporate gatherings, family recreation and other lifestyle happenings take place including the Century City Natural Goods Market which is held on the first Sunday of every month.

Bordering on the park is the Century City Clubhouse that plays host to a range of sporting activities, including the: • • • • •

Then there is the jewel of Century City - Intaka Island - our 16ha award winning wetlands conservation area. This green lung of our city now boasts a state - of-the art Environmental

Education Centre to assist the wetlands nature reserve to fulfill its enormous educational potential. From here you can also take relaxing boat trips on the canals, which is a great way to take in the picturesque scenery of Century City. In close proximity to Intaka Island and the Clubhouse is Century City House, the home of the Century City Property Owners’ Association, which maintains the pulse of all of this activity. C

entury City is probably best known for its sprawling shopping centre Canal Walk, Ratanga Junction Theme Park, and its numerous awardwinning residential developments, including the Island Club, KnightsBridge, Manhattan and the Oasis Luxury Retirement Resort. But, nestled in the heart of this superlative property, business, leisure and retail hub lies Intaka Island, a natural wetland conservation area and ‘green lung’ of Century City. Often referred to as the jewel of Century City, this lush natural area offers a haven for rare and threatened fynbos. Together with providing this threatened and rare vegetation with a natural habitat, Intaka Island was designed to manage and improve water quality, as well as provide a recreational and educational experience to visitors and residents of Century City.

This is when Intaka Island was born. The aim of the development was to not only conserve rare and threatened vegetation, but to preserve a rare type of wetland habitat, and to provide a peaceful habitat for water breeding birds. Today, Intaka Island is home to more than 231 species of indigenous plants, including 24 red data species. It also boasts an internationally recognised heronry and is home to 120 bird species. Intaka Island has always maintained an educational presence in Century City, therefore the introduction of the multifunctional Intaka Island Environmental Education Centre was welcomed. This eco-centre was funded by donations from environmentally conscious corporations and individuals, and has contributed to making Intaka Island a place with enormous environmental educational potential.

“The aim of the development was to not only conserve rare and threatened vegetation, but to preserve a rare type of wetland habitat, and to provide a peaceful habitat for water breeding birds.”

Intaka Island is made up of two regions – east and west. The western region comprises eight hectares of reconstructed wetlands. Here you will find our ponds that serve as a natural water purifyer for the eight kilometres of canals that run through Century City. The area is home to various water fowl, which live and breed in this region. The eastern half of the island consists of a further eight hectares of some of the last remaining seasonal salt pans and fynbos which have been widely eradicated elsewhere on the Cape Flats due to urbanisation. A number of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and two fish species take refuge on this part of the island. Before the development of Century City, the surroundings consisted of nothing more than bush, with the main invasive alien being the Port Jackson acacia – a terror for hayfever sufferers. The site was a somewhat degraded wetland which water birds used for breeding. The development of Century City was intended to successfully merge property development and conservation.

In an interview for SA Property News, Chris Blackshaw, chief executive officer of the Century City Property Owners’ Association and a trustee of the Intaka Island Environmental Trust, said, “More than half of the required R2.5 million capital costs of the centre have been raised, along with numerous donations in kind and all the professionals have offered their services pro bono.” Furthermore, the Intaka Island Environmental Trust, was established in part as the fundraising vehicle of the eco-centre, and has been registered as a public benefit organisation. This means that the eco-centre can issue Section 18A certificates to all its donors and sponsors.

Intaka Island and its eco-centre is fast becoming an environmental hotspot for Cape Town residents and visitors alike. Because of its convenient location, Intaka Island is ideal for a before or after shopping relaxation spot as lapa and picnic facilities are available. Self-guided trails allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of the land from an educational point of view. For more information on Intaka Island at Century City, visit www.intaka.co.za.

2011 Century city SPORTS FESTIVAL – right here

Chris’s corner

Century City Sports Festival

T

he highlight on the Century City sports calendar is our annual Sports Festival which will take place this year from Friday, 4 March until Sunday, 6 March.

This will be the third year we have staged the event which has grown exponentially and the Century City 2011 Sports Festival promises to be even bigger and better than previous years. Aimed at both corporate teams and individual participants, and providing both participatory and spectator sports, the Festival will again be held in and around Central Park and will include fun, food and entertainment for the whole family. The signature event of this year’s Festival will be the 10-kilometre road race, which forms part of the Western Province Athletics calendar, and in fact doubles up as the official 2011 Western Province 10-kilometre Championship Event. In addition, we will also hold a 2.5-kilometre family fun run/walk which has proven to be extremely popular with families at the previous festivals. A five-kilometre road race may also be introduced, if not this year then in future years. The 10-kilometre road race is a flat, fast course and we are expecting a large number of runners to enter in an attempt to achieve personal best times over the distances. Last year, three times Comrades winner, Vladimir Kotov, who is our brand ambassador and who runs in Century City colours, set a new Western Province Masters record with a time of 31 minutes 47 seconds. The Festival will include corporate touch rugby tournaments, five-a-side corporate soccer competitions, Kermesse road circuit cycling races, a Western Province junior canoe marathon and a senior reverse order canoe race, a dragon boat regatta as well as a junior touch rugby competition. The Festival will kick

off with the junior touch rugby on Friday. The road race/s and the family fun run/walk as well as dragon boat racing takes place on the Saturday morning, followed by corporate touch rugby. Sunday’s festivities will start with the Kermesse and canoeing events followed by the five-a-side corporate soccer. The running events are open to the public. Registration details, including fees, are available on our website at www.centurycity.co.za. Cash prizes will be awarded to category winners and places with all finishers receiving medals. Great spot prizes and lucky draws for participants in the other sporting codes will be held over the three-day festival which will offer all day fun, food and entertainment for the whole family. A Kiddies Corner near the field will offer a wide range of entertainment for the youngsters including a jumping castle, a giant slide, face painting and balloons. The Natural Goods Market will also be taking place on the Sunday morning. Corporate teams wishing to participate in the touch rugby tournaments should contact Neil or Graham on 021 439 8646. Corporate teams wishing to take part in the five-a-side soccer should contact Daniel on 021 433 1155 or e-mail him on daniel@interactivesport.co.za. General enquiries should be directed to Alan Liebenberg or Bianca Church on 021 552 6889 or e-mail bianca@ccpoa.co.za or alanl@ccpoa.co.za. We look forward to seeing you there!
