director of Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County, liked the idea of doing a veteran’s build when it was first brought up by the Rev Cliff Biggers, but the timing wasn’t right. Plans, however, are finally starting to fall into place to make that dream become a reality. “I talked to Jim Barstow from the veterans’ service office and Marge Pizzino from the Blue Star Mothers and they were both excited to help,” Hardesty said. “We are also working on the idea of getting funding from different (veteran) organizations in town.” A recent brainstorming session really got all interested parties energized. “We all left thinking yes we can do this,” said Helen Scholfield, president of the Habitat board of directors. Habitat is currently in the process of finishing its 12th home and hopes to make its 13th home, which will be built on North 15th Street, the residence of a local veteran and his or her family. Applications to become a partner family are due Tuesday, Jan. 15. Several factors will be considered including: You family’s actual housing need based on the suitability of your current shelter; your current income and ability to pay for a Habitat house; and your willingness to participate as a partner family. Veterans also will have to show proof of being honorably

I think this is a great thing for Habitat to do.” Pre-applications to become a Habitat partner family are available in Barstow’s office. “Our whole office is going to take an active role in promoting this project and I hope the service organizations in the county get on board too whether its financially or donating time to help build,” he said. Pizzino also is excited to get the Blue Star Mother involved in the veterans build. “The concept of this project fits right in with our mission of supporting active members of the military and veterans and their families,” she said. “There are so many things that we could do to help the process along from fundraisers, to speaking engagements to cooking food for whoever is working that day. The possibilities are endless for us, other veterans’ organization and individuals who want to give back to those who served their country.” Funding will be a big part of getting this project up and running. “We will be finishing up house number 12 and working on 13,” Scholfield said. “It cost between $65,000 and $70,000 to build a Habitat house and we try to purchase as much locally as we can.” The houses are typically three bedrooms, but that depends on the family’s size. “They do all have a full poured basement that can be finished for more living space if the family decides to do that later,” Scholfield said. Partner families also have to commit to volunteer time, a $450 down payment, classes on finances, home ownership and nutrition and a credit check. They also must pay the mortgage once the house is completed, which usually takes about a year. “We want to get rid of the stigma that we are giving away houses to the poor,” Hardesty said. “This is not a hand out. Elks deliver Christmas gifts for veterans

COSHOCTON - Once again, the Coshocton Elks made Christmas a little brighter for area veterans. Canvas totes (donated by Alltel) were filled with candy, crackers (donated by Wal-Mart), popcorn, hot chocolate mix and pears along with a hand written card and a calendar (donated by the Beach Co.). The gifts were delivered by Elk members and helpers to 85 local veterans at their homes and 33 vets in four care centers. Twenty “new” veterans on the list were given hand quilted lap robes made by the Coshocton Canal Quilters, for a total of 138 gifts. The Coshocton Elks honor our veterans with Christmas gifts, a dinner in November and packages for troops overseas. The Ohio Elks have Reps in four VA hospitals (Chillicothe, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Cleveland) and the two Ohio Veterans Homes in Sandusky and Georgetown where veterans are treated to parties, games and outing to local lodges for dinners every month. The motto of the Elks is “As long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” The Beacon wants your opinion! 1953
January 4th, 1953 After a two-week holiday break, the Coshocton-Roscoe bridge was scheduled to resume work that Monday morning. Not too much work remained on the project and was scheduled for completion by that spring. If weather conditions permitted, work on the seventh and final pier for the bridge would begin. The Beaumont Bridge Co., who was in charge of the bridge, would also begin work on one more abutment to be located on the east side of the river. The overpass and underpass on the west side of the bridge also needed completed.
1963
January 4th, 1963 Postmaster W. Hilliard Maxwell of West Lafayette received word from the regional office in Cincinnati that effective Feb. 2, home delivery services would be in effect for West Lafayette. An estimated total of 2,000 residents would benefit from this service, which included some new sections that had not been incorporated. The postmaster asked all resident to cooperate by erecting mailboxes, street signs, and house numbers. Service would be denied to those who did not put up house numbers. Much credit for the new delivery system went to the West Lafayette Rotary Club.
1973
January 7th, 1973 In an attempt to bring more business to the Coshocton area, a $300,000 building was to be constructed on Clow Lane between the Penn-Central railroad tracks and S. 2nd St. it was announced by William Black, president of the Community Improvement Corporation. The structure was to be a one-story building of 50,000 square feet and constructed on a six-acre tract. The plans called for unfinished interior to be determined by the buyer and would have room for expansion. The building plans represented the culmination of more than two years of planning by CIC to develop a program of industrial development.
1983
January 7th, 1983 The River View freshman basketball squad extended their winning streak to eight after their 38-31 victory over West Muskingum. The Bears, who were 8-0 would take on Cambridge in their next game who were 4-3. Leading the Bears to victory were Scott Carpenter with 12 points and Doug Uher with 11 points. Even though they lost, West Muskingum put up a good fight with John Callon leading his team with 11 points.

All three choirs were founded and are conducted by Charles R. Snyder, who is highly respected throughout the state. He is also the conductor of the 200-voice All-Ohio Youth Choir.

Church Events
Public Hearings. Coshocton County Auditor Chris Sycks and Engineer Fred Wachtel have scheduled two public hearings concerning modifications to the County’s Real Estate Conveyance Standards, as required by ORC 319.203. The hearings will be in Room 145 of the County Services Building, 724 S. 7th Street, Coshocton. The hearings are scheduled on Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 a.m. and Monday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. Copies of the proposed revised Real Estate Conveyance Standards are available from either the County Auditor or the County Engineer.
Back Door Café. Bakersville Presbyterian Church will have an all-you-can-eat menu of pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and drinks at their Back Door Café on Jan. 17, Feb. 21, and March 21 from 7:30 – 11 a.m. A $5 donation will be appreciated to continue their community outreach programs. Sweet rolls will also be available for sale.
Flu Shots. The Coshocton City Health Department at 400 Brown Lane will have flu clinics every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. now by appointment only. There is no cost for clients with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. For all other clients, the cost is $20. Donate food this holiday season. One out of seven households in the United States are food insecure. This holiday season, team up with your local Sears Hometown Store owners Bobby and Amanda Chaney in Coshocton and proud partner, The Salvation Army of Coshocton, to take a stand against hunger during their annual holiday food drive. Community members are encouraged to visit the Sears Hometown Store at 480 Downtowner Plaza and donate non-perishable food items. As a thank you for donating, customers will receive a coupon off their purchase. Sears Hometown Stores will collect non-perishable food items through Dec. 29. See store for details. With over 930 locations, Sears Hometown Stores hopes to impact hunger epidemic in communities across America. Volunteers Needed. Second Chance Homeless Shelter is currently accepting volunteer applications for part-time Resident Advisor positions. The volunteer Resident Advisor helps to provide a positive emotional and social living environment for residents of the shelter. The regular meetings for the Coshocton County Board of Health will now be the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. in the County Services Building.
Community Shoe Drive. Prairie Chapel Youth Alive for Christ is having a Community Shoe Drive now through Feb. 10. You can drop off your donation of gently-used or new shoes to Wilson Carpet & Furniture, Carroll’s Men Shop, The Three Rivers District Office on 415 Walnut St., or to Prairie Chapel UMC on US 36. The youth will be dividing the shoes up among local destinations, The Open Shelter in Columbus and to Souls for Soles in Africa. For the churches attending the Three Rivers District Leadership Event on Jan. 26 at Grace UMC, the youth will have a table set up where you can drop off your shoes. Coshocton Baptist Church and the Coshocton McDonald’s are teaming up to share information about the Ronald McDonald House in Akron. Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The Coshocton Senior Center is a distribution site for free monthly groceries for low income senior citizens (age 60 and over) living in Coshocton County. To be eligible, your monthly income cannot exceed $1,211 for one person in the household. Add $429 for each additional household member. The Coshocton County Commissioners certifies to the State of Ohio that Dane R. Shryock, in his/her capacity as President of County Commissioners, consents to accept the jurisdiction of Federal courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. The legal effect of the certification is that upon its approval, the Coshocton County Commissioners may use the Federal funds, and the State of Ohio will have satisfied its responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended. The State of Ohio will accept an objection to its approval of the release of funds and acceptance of the certification only if it is on one of the following grounds: (a) the certification was not, in fact, executed by the responsible entity’s Certifying Officer; (b) the responsible entity has failed to make one of the two findings pursuant to Section 58.40 or to make the written determination required by section 58.35, 58.47, or 58.53 for the project, as applicable; c) the responsible entity has omitted one or more of the steps set forth at subpart E of 24 CFR Part 58 for the preparation, publication, and completion of an Environmental Assessment; d) the responsible entity has omitted one or more of the steps set forth at subparts F and G of 24 CFR Part 58 for the conduct, preparation, publication, and completion of an Environmental Impact Statement; e) the recipient has committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before release of funds and approval of the environmental certification by the State; or f) another federal agency, acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504, has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality.
CONCERT
The band Half Moon came to Sacred Heart School on Dec. 21 to entertain the students. The children danced and listened to rock and roll music as played by Steve Shaw, Bill Given, Joe Cullison and John Zingg. SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER
Ten members of the Teen Institute at Ridgewood High School traveled to Gabrail Cancer Center in Canton on Dec. 21 to spread some Christmas cheer. Dressed up as Christmas packages, the teens traveled on a charter bus to the cancer center with 20 fleece blankets, 20 cancer caps, and 50 gift bags for the patients. The Salvation Army. “It’s cold outside,” said Jerry Olinger, principal at the school. “I had the dress on but when I stepped outside this morning I didn’t like the direction the wind was blowing. I knew you would all understand.” However, after Christmas performances by the fifth and sixth grade band and the choir, Olinger informed the students, teacher and parents who gathered in the school gym Dec. 21, for the concerts that he would indeed keep his bet. “At the beginning of the month The Salvation Army asked you and your families to bring in canned goods to help people who are less fortunate,” Olinger said to the students. “After you brought in 450 cans in four days I made a wild statement that if you brought in
BY JOSIE SELLERS 3,000 I’d dress up like a woman.” Olinger thought it was impossible for the students to meet his goal in the time they had left to bring in donations. “I was sure it wasn’t going to happen and I was actually right because you brought in 4,112,” he said. “I think this week if you learn one thing only it should be that if you say you are going to do something, you need to do it.” Olinger also advised the students to be careful what they say. “I’m embarrassed, but I’m going to change into a woman right now,” he said. Olinger had his friend Lila Jarvis help him with his makeup before he stepped backstage to change into a red dress. The Commissioners also approved the hiring of eight part time employees for EMS. “Seven of them have experience with our auxiliary program and all of them but one lives in Coshocton County,” Minet said. “They are all very interested in becoming active part time employees and this will help us stay on top of our staffing.” The Commissioners also: - Reappointed Bob Nelson to the Regional Planning Commission and having Tiffany Swigert, regional planning/safety coordinator, getting in touch with local attorneys to try and find one interested in filling the open legal slot on that board. - Discussed having Mike LaVigne, director of information technology and Ike Reger, maintenance supervisor, attend one of the first two meetings of 2013 to discuss call out hours. - Requested motions to: Adopt the Coshocton County Commissioners new Personnel Policy Manual effective Jan. 1, 2013; sign a Commendation for David Dilly, Coshocton County Recorder and Coshocton County Veterans commission employee for his

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met Dec. 26, with Bernie Minet and Todd Shroyer from Coshocton County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to discuss leasing property on County Road 621 and hiring additional part time staff. “We wanted you to see a copy of the lease so you can review it and make suggestions before we finalize it,” said Shroyer. After taking a look at the lease, Commissioners Dane Shryock and Curtis Lee brought up a few questions to Minet and Shroyer. “This is a two year lease without an out clause and most we sign have one,” Shryock said. “If you don’t want this property a year from now, you will still have to pay for it.” Lee wanted the EMS officials to think about what would happen at the end of that two year lease. “You might want to consider going month to month after the two year lease is up or at least talk to them about how it will be renegotiated if you still need the property,” he said. The property EMS plans to rent is a home and garage across from Hannah Truck Repair. The building will help eliminate overcrowding at the Coshocton station and improve response time in that area of the county while plans are made for a permanent location in

COSHOCTON – Christmas 2012 was extra special for Jodi Stipes, who was a winner in the Ellen (Degeneres) 12 days of Christmas contest. “I watch the show and they were saying you could enter online,” Stipes said. “I didn’t enter the first few days, but then I decided to get online and go through the steps.” The few minutes she spent online filling out her personal contact information paid off Dec. 14. “The phone at the house rang and I was thinking it was a telemarketer since the caller id said Burbank, Calif., but it was Ronnie from the ‘Ellen Show,’” Stipes said. “I kept thinking is this for real and my husband was telling me to hang up the phone.” She was extremely glad she took the call seriously because she ended up winning everything from day 10 of the contest. “I was running around like crazy and jumping up and down,” Stipes said. “It’s amazing. I’ve never really entered anything like this before. I’m just so excited. It’s a good Christmas in the Stipes home.” Her prize package included a variety of items including a stay at a resort in Laguna Beach, Calif., credit for the spa there, a Kiehl’s gift basket, a Lacoste card and more. “The trip to California is absolutely what I’m most excited about,” Stipes said. “I’ve been out to California a couple times and my husband and I were married out there a couple of years ago, but Laguna is in the south and I’ve never been to Southern California.” However, even if she didn’t win the contest, Stipes would still love The Ellen Degeneres Show. “She’s hilarious and wonderful to come home and watch,” Stipes said. “I think she’d be fun to sit down with and chat or hangout with.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
