COSHOCTON - Our Town Coshocton’s first annual ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas event will be held downtown Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Children’s activities kick off at 9:30 a.m. in the ArtPARK with an ornament hunt for kids up to age 10 (please bring a Christmas gift bag to hold found ornaments).

Free donuts and cocoa will also be available to all children in attendance. At 10:30 a.m., Santa Claus will take the stage for a special reading of Clement Moore’s poem “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” After the reading, Santa will mingle with children and hand out a small gift to each child. Children are also welcome to do a snowman craft provided by the Coshocton Public Library before heading on a self-guided tour of the library’s “Snowmen at Christmas” story walk down Main Street.

The event also features the Sugar-Plum Shop Hop where shoppers can earn entry tickets

Wide-eyed children on Russell Avenue in West Lafayette waited patiently for the end of the West Lafayette Christmas parade when Santa Claus made his grand entrance into the community seated in his sleigh. The jolly old elf waved to excited children during the parade and officially kicked off the holiday

season in West Lafayette on Saturday, Dec. 3.

The parade also featured area royalty, Mayor Steven Bordenkircher, 4-H groups, among other floats. The parade was part of the West Lafayette Chamber’s Christmas in the Village celebration.

WWI Collectors Show and Share scheduled COSHOCTON - The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is pleased to host WWI Collectors Show and Share on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. Ten people loaned their memorabilia to the museum for its WWI exhibit. Some had only a few family heirlooms and others, hundreds of objects - helmets, gas masks, medals, etc. During this program many of these contributors will show their favorite pieces and share the stories behind them. The collectors will also present their personal histories as to how they became interested in WWI memorabilia. WWI Collectors Show and Share will be fascinating not only because of the historical details behind each item but also because of the human story.

The program will be held in the Montgomery Gallery where the exhibit, Remembering the Great War: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of WWI is displayed.

The museum opens at 1 p.m. on Sunday so visitors are encouraged to come early to view the other galleries.

The program is free with regular admission: Adults, $4; Students, $3; Families with children ($11); and free for Friends of the Museum.

Remembering the Great War, sponsored by Auer Ace Hardware in Coshocton, will be on display through Dec. 31. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located at 300 N. Agricultural & Natural Resources  OSU Extension and Local Bounty Coshocton once again partnered to offer a Local Foods Kids Cooking

Camp. Twenty children ages 4 to 11 years old learned to make simple meals and treats using locally produced vegetables, herbs, cheeses, honey, and baked goods. All caregivers of the participants agreed that their child gained skills in food preparation and was more willing to try new foods than before. A total of 65 children have completed the program over the past 4 years.

 Over 60 people attended a program titled “Amazing Coyotes” taught by OSU Wildlife Specialist, Dr. Stan

Gehrt. Dr. Gerht shared some remarkable social behaviors of coyotes. One of the best things we can do is to not feed coyotes as coyotes should always be afraid of people. You should report any fearless or aggressive coyotes immediately, because this is not common behavior.

 OSU Extension, Soil and Water Conservation District (CSWCD) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) have collabo-

rated for many years to implement the annual Coshocton County Fall Foliage and Farm Tour. The 2016 tour brought nearly 1800 people through the northwestern section of Coshocton County over the beautiful weekend. These participants represented 10 states and 34 Ohio counties. The volunteer tour stops included beef, dairy, and horse farms, a furniture manufacturer and an upland gamebird hunting preserve.

 The Coshocton County Farmers Breakfasts continue to increase awareness on a variety of timely agricultural

and rural topics. The first breakfast of the new season was in November and featured Diane McDaniel with the FDA who explained the new Veterinary Feed Directive. These programs are open to everyone and are a collaborative effort of OSU Extension, CSWCD and FSA.

If you have had an address change or paid off your mortgage in the past year and have not contacted the treasurer’s office with your new address, please call 740-622-2731 within the next two weeks to have your address updated to allow

your tax bills to reach you in a timely manner.

Failure to receive a tax bill does not eliminate the responsibility to pay. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to keep their mailing address current with the treasurer’s office.

Ohio Department of Agriculture offers tips for purchasing firewood REYNOLDSBURG - As winter quickly approaches and more people look to firewood to help heat their homes, the Ohio Department of Agriculture is offering some basic tips to help when purchasing wood.

“Many Ohioans rely on firewood to heat their homes during the cold winter months,” said David Daniels, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

“That’s why it’s important to know the laws about how firewood must be sold in order to make sure you, the consumer, are getting what you pay for.”

The following firewood rules and regulations are helpful to review before making purchases: • Non-packaged firewood must be sold by the cord or by fractions of a cord. One cord, when properly stacked, should be 8 feet long by 4 feet high and 4 feet wide (128 cubic feet).

• If sold in bulk, firewood must be purchased by the weight in ton measurements. This must be weighed on a certified scale.

• It is illegal to sell firewood by any other unit of measurement such as a rick, rack, face cord or truckload. If a consumer believes that a seller did not comply

with these rules and regulations, the person should immediately contact the seller.

• If non-packaged firewood is purchased, the seller must present the consumer with a delivery ticket or sales invoice that includes contact information and the terms and conditions of the sale.

• If the firewood is advertised and sold as a certain type of wood, the load must contain at least 90 percent of that species.

• Be aware of different firewood movement regulations in place concerning invasive species such as gypsy moth and Asian longhorned beetle. It is always good practice to not move firewood long distances and to buy local and burn local.

• When burning firewood for heat, the State Fire Marshal advises to follow all necessary safety practices to avoid any serious problems.

If you have questions or concerns with a firewood sale, and the seller will not correct the problem, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Weights and Measures at 614-728-6290 or contact your county auditor’s office.

Historical club to present program on historical presidential Christmas dinners COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Historical Club will meet Monday, Dec. 12 at 12:30 p.m. at the Roscoe United Methodist Church.

Lunch will be served. Devotions will be given by Joyce Mullet. Roll call will be to name a favorite Christmas cookie. The program, “Historical Presidential Christmas Dinners” will be presented by Bee Lehner and Brenda Davis.

COSHOCTON – Coshocton City Council had a quick meeting Monday evening, Nov. 28, but made sure to discuss how excited they were for the Coshocton High School football team.

“I think we all need to congratulate the Redskins on the year they had,” said Service Director Jerry Stenner.

“They had some pretty great performances, but met a great team that may end up being the state champion for something like the fifth year in a row.”

The CHS varsity football team finished the regular season 9-1 and 5-1 in the ECOL. They then went on to the playoffs where they won three games before falling to Coldwater High School in the state semifinals.

Councilman Bob Fetters suggested Mayor Steve Mercer recognize the team with a meal or at least invite them to attend a meeting so they can be acknowledged.

“We will consider an appropriate recognition for the football team,” Mercer said.

Fetters also pointed out to council the improvements Tlaquepaque made to the exterior of its building by

painting it and adding a mural.

“They made big improvements and it looks fantastic,” he said.

Councilman Roger Moore also mentioned to Stenner that it was nice to see the unnecessary stop signs removed from the railroad tracks on Pleasant Valley Drive.

Stenner agreed with him and stated, “They were a great source of confusion and were very dangerous.”

The meeting wrapped up with Stenner sharing that the city will continue to pick up leaves for residents as long as it can.

“Those trucks also are used for snow removal so we will do our best to get the leaves before the snow flies,” he said.

The latest model of Oldsmobile featured a little bit of Coshocton inside each and every car. The No.2053 was a printed electronic circuit system made using a laminate made right here in Coshocton’s GE plant.

These printed circuits could also be found in a variety of GE radios and televisions.

DECEMBER 3, 1966 Heralded as one of the most advanced in the state, the new water treatment plant opened that day. As part of the ceremonies, Russel Caton of the American Legion presented the flag which would fly by the plant. Residents were invited to tour the facility the next day.

DECEMBER 9, 1976 The local United Way had met 102% of its goal for that year. The fund drive began October 11 and ended on November 14. David Bash, the campaign chairman, made the announcement the previous afternoon. The official total was $143, 311.

DECEMBER 3, 1986 To kick-start the holiday season, local artists were putting on demonstrations in the Towne Centre on Friday. They showed a variety of mediums including water colors, acrylics, and a type of paper cutting called scherenschnitte at a number of businesses around the court square. The Vietnam Veterans of America were overseeing the Ceremony of Lights scheduled for later in the evening and the Salvation Army raised money through the triumphant return of their famed donut stand. The night culminated in the lighting of the luminaria along Main Street.

Food vouchers still available for income eligible veterans COSHOCTON - Veterans wishing to obtain food vouchers for the upcoming Christmas holiday are encouraged to apply at the Veterans Service Office.

Vouchers will be available to veterans whose annual income does not exceed 200 percent of the 2016 Federal Poverty Guidelines.

The financial guidelines are as follows: One person - $23,540; two people - $31,860; three people $40,180; four people - $48,500; five people - $56,820; six people - $65,140; seven people - $73,460; eight people - $81,780.

Veterans who wish to receive a voucher must provide proof of household income and Coshocton County residency for a minimum of 90 days, have served on active duty for other than training and have been Honorably Discharged.

Each $50 voucher may be redeemed at Baker’s IGA, Buehler’s Food Market, Aldi’s or Collins Meat Market and are to be used for food only.

A list of items that are not to be purchased will be provided to successful applicants and store receipts will be reviewed. Anyone purchasing unauthorized items may be barred from participating in any future voucher programs and/or financial assistance.

This is the fourth year that the Veterans Service Commission and Office are providing these vouchers. Vouchers will be issued on a first-come, firstserved basis as they are limited in quantity.

ITM employees working on Christmas project COSHOCTON - Employees at ITM are working together to help bring a brighter Christmas to 40 families in the community. These families consist of approximately 95 children and the parents are either in recovery or have experienced financial hardships.

Monetary donations, gift cards or toys can be dropped off at ITM in the plaza from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday before Dec. 14. Employees will distribute gifts to the families during a celebration held on Dec. 18 at the Senior Center. The families will also be treated to lunch and photos with Santa.

COSHOCTON – The red kettles are out and bells are ringing in Coshocton County, but The Salvation Army has much more than this project going on for the holidays.

The Salvation Army red kettle project kicked off Nov. 18 and will continue through Christmas Eve at eight locations in Coshocton County.

“The majority of the money raised during this time frame helps us sustain our services,” said Envoy Vicki Clark. “A small pile of it goes to our Christmas efforts, but most of it helps us from January to November with special needs requests and family services.”

The Salvation Army’s goal is to raise $35,000 this year.

“We had to up our goal,” Clark said.

“Last year it was between $30,000 and $32,000, but we’ve seen a greater need in Coshocton. We didn’t see the high last year with WestRock closing, but we know many from WestRock contributed to United Way, which we are a partner agency with. We will see a loss from that so that’s another reason we increased our goal for the coming year to offset that percentage of funds we get from United Way.” The Salvation Army has been in Coshocton since 1904, but the red kettle project dates back to 1891. At that time Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. His goal was to provide a free Christmas dinner for 1,000 of the city’s poorest, but he needed to come up with a way to fund his project. McFee thought back to his sailor days and came up with the idea to place a pot at a ferry landing where he soon had collected enough money for the meal he wanted to serve.

Six years later the idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area and 150,000 Christmas dinners were provided to the needy. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four and a half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The Salvation Army is still looking for individuals, groups, churches or organizations that would be willing to volunteer their time at red kettle locations.

Clark said individuals are usually scheduled during the week to work shifts of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

and groups on the weekends to handle the entire time frame of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This, however, isn’t the only opportunity to give back to the community this holiday season. The Salvation Army also is need of volunteers to help with Christmas Castle shopping dates and Christmas food distribution.

The Christmas Castle shopping dates are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12 and Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Wal-Mart and volunteers will help children 6-18-years-old shop.

“We help with clothing and winter gear because some of those items are expensive especially if a family is on a very fixed and limited income,” Clark said.

“To get boots for two to three children and winter coats is outrageous. This relieves families of some stress and the extra support goes a long way at Christmas time.”

Three hundred and twenty-two families are signed up for the program and Clark said they want to make the shopping days as enjoyable as possible.

“We want this to be a wonderful stress free experience that is a fun time enjoyed by all,” she said.

Twenty-five children are scheduled for each half hour time slot.

“The more volunteers we have the smoother it will go for parents and children,” Clark said.

Volunteers also are needed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21. They will help hand out Christmas gifts to families with children who are preschool age and younger who were adopted by local organizations and churches and assist those who will be receiving food boxes.

“We will return your call and let you know when and where to come and help, but you don’t have to call,” Clark said. “If you just show up we will still find something for you to do to help the process go smoother. I think there are a lot of people out there that really want to give a half hour or so of their time, but don’t know what direction to go. We can provide them with an opportunity and a little bit of time will make a huge difference.”

DOVER - The River View swim team competed in the Dover Invite on Saturday.

The girls placed 8th out of 13 teams, and the boys came in 3rd out of 11.

The Black Bears finished in the top 10 in several events. Shawna Shroyer was 9th out of 31 in the 200 free (2:25.49), Lyndsey Ashcraft was 7th of 14 in the IM (2:36.35), and 4th of 27 in the 100 breast (1:20.65), and the 200 free relay group of Jesse Vanderbark, Josie Fornara, Shroyer, and Ashcraft was 8th of 33 (2:00.76).

On the boys side, Jake Mitchell was 7th (24.93) and Nate Cooper was 8th (25.00) out of 57 in the 50 free, Caleb Fischer was 3rd in the 100 free (1:04.61)

and the 100 breast (1:10.49), Mitchell was 7th (6:26.60) and Dylan Harsh 8th (6:57.58) in the 500 free, Cooper was 3rd of 21 in the 100 back (1:01.95), the 200 free relay of Xavier Lewis, Trase Berry, Harsh, and Zared Tumblin was 7th (1:54.02), and the relay of Cooper, Fischer, Mitchell, and R.J. Hammond finished 2nd in both the 200 medley (1:52.51), and the 400 free (3:55.07).

Scheetz Tree Farm remembers a milestone

COSHOCTON – When Kenny and Joan Sheetz entered one of their Christmas trees into the OCTA display and contest at the Ohio State Fair, they never imagined it would lead them to Washington D.C. and the White House.

“It was bewildering is what it was,” said Joan.

The couple, who have owned Scheetz Tree Farm since 1962, entered one of their home-grown Christmas trees in the Ohio State Fair 20 years ago in 1996 and came away as grand champion, which made them eligible to enter the national competition in Kansas City, MO. “It was the first time we had ever gone to nationals for any reason,” said Joan. “Some people who don’t show go just to go. We had a six-foot tree and Kenny wrapped it in burlap. We took it to nationals in the back of a pick-up truck. The national competition is in August so it was hot and we had to keep spraying it with water just to keep it moist.”

That tree was named the national grand champion Christmas tree, which automatically made them eligible to donate a tree to the White House.

“We had the responsibility of getting that huge tree cut down without breaking it,” said Joan.

Philip Wagner provided a crane to secure the 25-foot Blue Spruce while it was being cut down. The tree made

its grand entrance onto the White House lawn in a 28foot trailer hauled by a pick-up truck.

“We had quite a time getting that outfit in that space,” said Kenny. “Of course, there was also Secret Service police everywhere, and it had to stay there because there was nowhere else in the city to park it.”

The Scheetz family was received by former First Lady Hillary Clinton and was able to tour the White House.

“One of the things I remember was, of course, presenting the tree was neat and meeting the Clintons,” said Jane Hartsock, daughter of Kenny and Joan. “Touring the White House meant a lot to me immensely and it’s something that I cherish because it’s something you don’t get to do nowadays.”

“I remember just the beauty of everything,” said Hartsock. “Being a small-town girl, that was a big deal. The diplomatic room is where we had the reception after the

During the presentation of the tree, President Clinton was receiving the Thanksgiving turkey at that time, which also came from Ohio. Joanna, 10 years old at the time, and Rebecca, eight years old, are the granddaughters of Kenny and Joan, and were able to see the turkey presentation.

“We were at the turkey presentation with Bill,” said Joanna. “We shook hands with Bill and were able to go right up to the turkey. I remember his name was Carl.”

The family stayed at The Jefferson Hotel, located three blocks from the White House.

“The hotel staff was so excited to have kids staying there that they brought us up a tray of hot chocolate,” said Joanna.

The family has other memories of the trip which include playing with Socks, the White House cat, doing cartwheels in the diplomatic room, and visiting the china room where past first ladies china patterns were displayed. First Lady Hillary Clinton also did individual pictures with each family member.

“I thought she was very gracious, down to earth, and easy to talk to,” said Jane.

Scheetz Tree Farm is a locally-owned business located on State Route 541 in Coshocton. They farm 24 acres of Christmas trees and it is owned by Kenny and Joan Scheetz but mostly run now by daughter Jane, sonin-law, Larry, and granddaughters Joanna and Rebecca.

WEST LAFAYETTE – The West Lafayette Library celebrated the upcoming holiday season with an open house on Saturday, Dec. 3. Patrons of all ages were invited to the library for refreshments, a chance to win door prizes, and crafts for the kids.

“We’ve been a chamber member for over 10 years and we enjoy partnering with the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce,” said Andrea Schweitzer Smith, branch manager. “This is a nice opportunity to kick off the season and invite people to the library.”

The event was sponsored by the Friends of the Library and two members, Patty Thompson and Arlene Reddick were volunteering that day. Also volunteering was Milena Cognion, a junior at Ridgewood High School who has been volunteering at the library since March.

“I was getting tired of sitting around the house,” said Cognion. “I want to get into the National Honor Society and this was a volunteer opportunity and so I thought I should take it. It gives me an opportunity to learn about the community and about the library.”

During the month of December, the library will be accepting food for fines. Patrons can bring in a non-perishable food item to the library as payment for

COSHOCTON – Coshocton City Councilman Jim Baker passed away Dec. 2 and Mayor Steve Mercer ordered the United States flag be flown at half staff at City Hall and upon all city buildings and grounds to honor him.

“I was very surprised to hear the news,” said Mayor Steve Mercer. “I talked with him just a day or two ago.

When something like this happens it really catches you off guard.”

Baker was a dedicated councilman for the City of Coshocton since Jan. 1, 2010. Flags will stay lowered until Baker’s funeral.

“He loved feeling like he was contributing to the city and he was,” Mercer said.

The Mayor said Baker was a member of the Democratic Party so the Democratic Central Committee will be responsible for filling his vacant position on council.

Baker’s calling hours were held at Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Dec. 5 and a funeral Mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Dec. 6. Per the family’s wishes, Baker was cremated after his services. For those who wish, contributions in his memory can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 805 Main St. Coshocton, OH 43812.

PROGRAM: Church creates a new program for children FROM PAGE 1 Wednesday night to go along with their adult Bible Study.

“Either the parents wouldn’t come because we had nothing for the kids or the kids would have to sit with their parents during Bible study,” said Pastor Jerrod Mitchel, pastor at Church of God. It has been more than 15 years since the church has had a Wednesday night children’s ministry.

“Our children’s ministry is growing,” said Mitchel. “We’re getting ready to start another youth program in January. We’re excited to be adding that.”

For more than a year, the church has seen more children become involved in the church and wanted to add a program designed for them.

“I think families want to have their children grow up in the church,” said Mitchel. “I think kids want a safe place and I think families want their children to be in a safe place, and the church is supposed to be a safe place.”

The ministry has been in existence since last August, and for the month of December, the children are traveling to local assisted living facilities to sing

Christmas carols and hand out handmade Christmas cards. They had their first visit to a local facility last Wednesday.

“They said the response was great and some people were singing with them,” said Mitchel.

Although the ministry started in August, the church decided to add a family dinner in October. The meals are served at 5:30 p.m. and then the children go to a classroom and the adults go to the fellowship hall for Bible study, both at 7 p.m.

The children’s ministry is not the only thing the church is doing to welcome children into their church family. They also have Sunday School classes for ages three and up, and the women’s group is currently working on renovating the nursery for infants. The Wednesday night ministry is for children ages 12 and up.

“We want them to know that they are loved,” said Mitchel. “We love them and we appreciate them being here. God loves them and has an awesome plan for them. We want them to know they are welcome here.”

The Church of God has Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and church at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

COSHOCTON - The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission continues to offer area residents help with their heating bill. Emergency HEAP is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Assistance that provides financial assistance to low-income households that are threatened with disconnection from their heating source, or have already had service disconnected. Those households serviced by a PUCO-regulated utility are encouraged to sign up for the Percentage of Income Payment Plus Plan (PIPP Plus) or an alternate budget payment plan. Households utilizing bulk fuel must have a tank containing less than 25% of its capacity. Income documentation for all household members along with social security numbers, electric and gas bills, photo ID, proof of U.S. citizenship/legal residency for all household members, proof of disability if disabled, and other documentation must be presented at the appointment. Income guidelines are based at 175% of the Federal Poverty Level. For a family of four the annual income must be at or below $42,525. Income may also be calculated using the past three months, whichever benefits the client. Those wishing to enroll in PIPP Plus have a lower income eligibility threshold. Approved

applicants will also have their application automatically transmitted to the State HEAP office, where additional assistance may be available under the Regular HEAP program.

Eligible households may receive financial assistance once per heating season. The HEAP heating season is Nov. 1, 2016 - March 31, 2017. The benefit amounts are as follows: PUCO regulated gas or electric customers may receive a benefit of up to $175, non-regulated electric or gas (i.e. co-ops) may receive a benefit amount up to $550. Income eligible bulk fuel customers may receive up to $450 for wood or coal, up to $750 is available for bulk fuel propane/bottled gas and fuel oil consumers.

The March 2017 deadline to meet this requirement is coming fast and we have an answer to help. Ohio State University Extension, Coshocton County has partnered with TAP (Training Achievement Program) Series to offer an on-line version of the Level 2 Food Safety training which meets all Ohio Department of Health requirements. You can complete the online course at your own speed and at a time that works for you. There is a registration fee of $100 for the online class.

Once training is completed, you will register for a proctored certification exam. The ServSafe Manager exam is proctored by the Coshocton County Health Department who is a Certified ServSafe® Proctor. Exam dates are: Dec. 30, 2016 and Jan. 27 and Feb. 17, 2017 at the Job and Family Services Building.

Jingle Bell Jangle 5K returns to Lake Park C

COSHOCTON – Celebrate the holidays and enjoy some exercise at the same time with the Jingle Bell Jangle 5K. This Christmas-themed night race will be held at Lake Park from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.

“We are changing the course a little bit from last year because since it’s a night race we had some concerns last year with areas where it was a little too dark,” said Dustin Haywood from DK Races & Events, which is organizing the 5K. The course will be decked out in holiday-themed decorations and lights and everyone will start at the Lake Park Canal Boat Parking Lot. “We start there to mix it up and do something different,” Haywood said. “We

also thought it would be really cool to light up that area and run through the tunnel.”

River View goalies receive honors

WARSAW – When Danielle Muhleman started high school, she made it her goal to have her name added to the All-Ohio board at River View High School.

“My coach’s daughter got All-Ohio and so did my neighbor growing up,” she said. “When I came in my freshman year I saw their names up there and knew I wanted mine up there too. I made it my goal as a freshman and it took me until my senior year, but I got it.”

Muhleman, who played goalie for the River View Lady Bears, was named to the 2016 Girls Division II Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Second Team.

Joining her on the list is the boys’ keeper Jorn Hocter who was named to the 2016 Boys Division II Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association First Team.

“Always work hard. That’s the only way you can achieve something. Never give up and never stop working.”

Jorn, the son of Jill Dotson and Josh Hocter, said he has always played goalie.

“There is a lot of pressure that comes with it and I love handling that,” Jorn said.

Like Jorn, Muhleman also remembers being surprised when she heard about her honor.

“I was at Taco Bell when a friend read that I was on the list,” she said. “I thought they were kidding.”

think what got me there though is a lot of hard work.

There was a lot of frustration, but I always worked through it and tried my best and it paid off.”

Muhleman also thinks it helped that she had the same coach throughout high school.

“It was nice to have one coach work with me throughout my entire high school career,” she said. “He (Coach Dave Kridler) is pretty much the best of the best.”

Assistant Coaches Wes Brenly and Katie Sampsel and her parents Scott and Tammy Muhleman also helped her get where she is today.

“Katie used to be a goalie back in the day when she played and helped me transition to that role,” Danielle said.

Her advice to younger students is to set their goals high and work hard.

Danielle’s next stop after graduating from River View this spring will be to attend The Ohio State University to study nursing and hopefully play on their club soccer team.

“West Liberty was looking at me for soccer, but their nursing program wasn’t the best and I’m one to pick academics over athletics,” she said.

Jorn still has another year of high school, but said he would actually like to play baseball in college. His advice to younger athletes is very similar to Danielle’s.

“Always work hard,” he said. “That’s the only way you can achieve something. Never give up and never stop working.”

COSHOCTON – Annin likes to keep its fundraising for United Way of Coshocton County interesting. Last year a manager kissed a pig when employees hit a fundraising goal and this year one of them was ducted taped to a wall.

“Our goal is to suspend him, but I don’t know how it’s going to work,” said Bobbi Parks. “We have 15 roles of duct tape though.”

Parks had the pleasure of kissing a pig in 2015 and this year’s challenge went to Dave Rogers. Employees paid money for the opportunity to help duct tape him to the wall and then throw a whipped cream pie in his face.

“He’s such a great support when it comes to this kind of thing,” Parks said.

When Rogers’ platform was removed he did manage to stay attached to the plywood on the wall for a minute or two before the tape slowly pulled away.

“I felt very vulnerable just standing there and having no control,” he said.

The company has raised $5,600 so far for United Way and hopes to raise a total of $6,300 when they are done with their fundraising activities.

“It makes you feel great that the employees want to be involved and that makes it easy for me to be involved in fundraisers,” Rogers said.

Burr humbled by community’s support during his battle with Melanoma

COSHOCTON – Swim for Cure was a very humbling experience for Mike and Linda Burr.

“This has been a blessing,” Mike said. “The goodness and kindness people have showed us is very humbling.”

Mike is the varsity boys’ soccer coach at River View and early in the 2016 season he was diagnosed with Melanoma. Since then the River View community has rallied behind him with a Fight Like Mike campaign and River View’s varsity swim coach Kristina King carried the support over to the swim season.

Swim for Cure was held Nov. 29 when the team opened its season with a meet against Coshocton. Fans from both schools did their best to white out Melanoma by purchasing white shirts that said Swim for Cure or Cure for Burr. Tickets for raffle prizes also were sold and there was a 50/50 drawing.

By the time the evening was over $3,311.55 was raised for Mike and his family and King said a few donations are still coming in.

Mike said the money will go toward their Relay for Life team at Fresno Bible Church and to help with medical expenses.

“My wife heads up the team there and has done that for several years because her mom died of cancer,” he said.

Mike’s own journey with cancer started on Aug. 15 when he went to the doctor for what he thought was a hemorrhoid. He ended up getting sent for a colonoscopy

and the pathology report from that procedure confirmed he had cancer.

“It’s a very rare type of Melanoma,” Mike said. “They say 1.7 cases out of a million are internal Melanoma.”

He had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on Sept. 23, which was right in the middle of soccer season.

“I’m a Christian, but I feel like I’m closer to God now than I’ve ever been. Those shirts that say Fight Like Mike – that’s not me fighting, it’s God. I’m just trying to keep a good attitude and give all the glory to God. The devil can put thoughts in my head, but I just try to remember that God’s in control.”

-Mike Burr “I missed a lot of practices and games, but my assistant coach Vince Andrews stepped in and took over,” Mike said. “It was really hard on everyone, but the guys did well. They said they were going to win for me, but I told them I was going to be ok and to win for River View.”

The boys went on to win the ECOL and their sectionals before falling in the district championships.

“They really responded,” Mike said. “We had probably our best season in 10 years or so. They as a team were an inspiration to me. It’s really easy to get caught up in all the bad news that is out there, but this whole thing with cancer has really reminded me that most people are good. There are people who have sent me cards and said they were praying for me that don’t even really know me.”

He has been doing well since his surgery, but was told there is a 50 percent chance his cancer could come back.

“I was given two choices to wait and see if it comes back and then try chemo or whatever else they suggest or try to get into an immunotherapy trial program,” Mike said. “I applied for the trial because I want to be a step ahead and battle before it comes back.”

Throughout all this, he has focused on his faith in God. “I’m a Christian, but I feel like I’m closer to God now than I’ve ever been,” Mike said. “Those shirts that say Fight Like Mike – that’s not me fighting, it’s God. Riebesell to serve on Ohio School Boards committee COSHOCTON - John D. Riebesell, a member of the board of education from Ridgewood Local and the Coshocton County Career Center, will serve a one-year term on the Ohio School Boards Association’s Legislative Platform Committee as a representative from the association’s southeast region.

Riebesell is one of five board members from the region who are appointed to serve on the committee. Annually, the LPC reviews resolutions submitted by member boards of education to amend the OSBA Legislative Platform and makes recommendations to the delegate

assembly at the annual business meeting in November at the association’s Capital Conference in Columbus.

His appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2017.

The southeast region covers 18 counties with a membership of 16 city districts, five exempted village districts, 48 local districts, nine vocational school district s• and seven educational service centers for a total of 85 member boards of education as well as nearly 400 board members and more than 119,000 students. Restaurants benefit from deer hunters

COSHOCTON COUNTY – Deer hunters flocked to Coshocton County last week for gun season, but they weren’t just in the woods. They also supported many of our county’s restaurants.

“Sales were up because of them,” said Keith Saylor, co-owner of Roberta’s Diner in Warsaw. “We even opened Monday for them, which is one day we are normally closed.”

He said the hunters they spoke with came from all over.

“There was a gentleman this morning (Nov. 30) that was from the upper peninsula of Michigan,” Saylor said.

“There was another one from Chicago, some from Indiana and several from different places in Ohio.”

Late breakfast time seemed to be the most popular time for hunters to stop at Roberta’s.

“They’d go directly to the woods in the morning and then hit us around 10 a.m.,” Saylor said.

Peggy Sue Wilson from Peggy Sue’s Steak & Ribs in Newcastle saw most of her deer hunters for lunch and dinner.

“Most of mine went into the woods early and then when they’d get cold they’d come in for lunch and dinner later,” she said.

Wilson stayed open later on Monday and Tuesday for the hunters and tried to pass out some coupons for them.

“Deer hunters bring a lot of money into Coshocton County,” she said. “They don’t just show up though. A lot of them have been hunting Woodbury for many years.

from. Coming back here is a tradition for most.”

Cricket Myer from Myer’s Country Diner in West Lafayette said she had one gentleman from Cleveland say he started coming to Coshocton County because his uncle used to live in the area.

“Most of my hunters come at lunch,” she said. “They come out of the woods for a while, eat and turn around and go right back out.”

John Larson from the Warehouse Steak n’ Stein agreed with Wilson that hunters have a big impact on business in the county.

“We’ve had a nice turn out of hunters,” he said. “Some we see from year to year and some are new. We’ve seen hunters from Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and really from all over. We have nice conversations with them and find out that some stay here in cabins and some lease property.”

Senior football players honored at special dinner

COSHOCTON – About seven or eight years ago Pastor Rod Uhlig became the chaplain for the Ridgewood High School football team.

“This combined two of my greatest passions,” Uhlig said. “I love serving God and love football. This has been one of the greatest joys of my ministry.”

Ridgewood’s coach John Slusser said he wasn’t sure what to expect when Uhlig first started speaking to his team, but said it really caught on with the kids.

“They will tell you it’s one of the most special things we do,” Slusser said.”I’ve never made it mandatory, but I think in the eight years or so he’s been with us I’ve only had two kids miss his meetings.”

He also feels like Uhlig’s presence with the team created a different type of camaraderie and bond than they had before he started speaking with them.

“When it’s all said and done football is just a short amount of time,” Slusser said. “It doesn’t matter how much you win or lose. It’s what type of people we become.”

Uhlig wanted River View and Coshocton high school football players to have the same experience Ridgewood’s did and school administrators and coaches gladly welcomed area preachers to their teams. Uhlig was assisted at Ridgewood by Dan Eggan. Joel Mason and Nick Johnson were the chaplains for River View and Caleb Mason and Chad Olinger ministered at Coshocton.

This fall a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group also started meeting at River View High School and an FCA Coshocton Area dinner was held on Dec. 4 to recognize senior football players from all three county high schools.

The football chaplains worked together this year to present all three teams with the same lesson that concerned four principals of manhood: Reject passivity, accept responsibility, lead courageously, and expect the greater reward. The seniors at the dinner were present-

“It’s something we hope you will keep forever,” Uhlig said.

One of the first people to congratulate the seniors after they received their coin was Cie Grant. Grant, a graduate of New Philadelphia High School, played football for The Ohio State University. He is well known for his final fourth down play in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl that helped OSU win the BCS National Championship. He also played briefly in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.

“I’m truly honored to see all of you seniors here,” Grant said. “I’m proud of each and every one of you. To make it to this point in your life is a big deal.”

He also spoke to the seniors about taking responsibility for their action, not being passive about finding their purpose in life and fighting through adversity.

“I understand there were some different outcomes to your seasons, but there is a greater cause to everything you do. One day all of the hard work will make sense.”

Hart to portray British soldier in WWI truce

NEWCOMERSTOWN - On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10, the Newcomerstown Museum is having a performance by Chris Hart.

Titled “Oh Holy Night,” Hart will tell the true story of a Christmas Eve truce during World War I and play the part of a British soldier who takes part in the truce.

In addition to the story, the evening will feature a meal including lasagna, tossed salad, breadsticks, drink, and homemade dessert.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the show will follow dinner.

Cost of tickets is $16. Tickets can be reserved by calling the museum at 740-498-7735 when the box office on Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to Noon. In addition, the box office will be open Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 5 - 6:30 p.m., and that will be the last possible time to buy tickets.

Sports equipment drive continues until Dec. 16

WARSAW – The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and More sports equipment drive continues until Friday, Dec. 16.

The group, which meets at River View High School, is collecting new or gently-used baseballs, baseball gloves, baseball bats, pinnies, footballs, volleyballs, basketballs and soccer balls to donate to a sports mission.

River View students can bring their donations to the high school’s main office and anyone in the community interested in contributing is welcome to call John Strasser at 740-622-5541.

The Coshocton Community Choir Christmas concert is a must-attend for many in Coshocton County, and this year was no exception. The choir gave an outstanding performance to a packed house Sunday, Dec. 4.

Each year, the choir delivers a message of hope, joy, and peace to audience members during the Christmas season, and they showed their appreciation at the end of the concert with a standing ovation. This year, the theme was “O Holy Night” and the narrative message spoke about finding peace in Christ during an uncertain and fearful time. In addition to the choir’s performance, there were also portrayals of Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child, angels, and shepherds who were featured throughout the concert.

The concert also featured the Coshocton Singers, a group of young singers throughout the county, and the Coshocton Youth Chorale, a group of high school singers who attend school in and around the county.

Roscoe Village starts the Christmas season with Candlelighting COSHOCTON - The magic and wonder of the Christmas season was evident in Roscoe Village Saturday evening for the first candlelighting of the year. Candles and beautifully decorated Christmas trees softly lit the streets as visitors enjoyed hot chocolate, cookies and cider. Music of the season played and Santa stopped to visit with everyone. The night was just cold enough to add to the feel of the season.

Jon Cotterman, the director for “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” was dressed as a character from the play and rang a bell up and down the street inviting the public to the play after the candlelighting. The play will also be presented Dec. 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. at the Triple Locks Theater.

Rachel Hotlieb, from Columbus, attended the candlelighting for the first time with her two children, Eisley and Luke. She said her cousin had attended before and they decided to bring all six children this weekend.

Monica Baker said she knew the children would enjoy the music and seeing the candles. Her children, Callie, Camryn, Madeline and Jake, sat with their cousins to

enjoy cookies and popcorn.

Seven year old Baylor Forbes was walking through the streets with her grandparent’s dog, Maggie. Baylor was excited to be at the candlelighting and was enjoying leading Maggie around. Maggie was enjoying the fact the cookie crumbs and popcorn were all over the street.

Jennifer Williams, director of special events in Roscoe Village, welcomed the large crowd to the candlelighting.

She said the tree lighting and candlelighting have been a tradition in Roscoe Village for 45 years. The village tree used to be cut from the Montgomery family farm, but when their trees became too large, the tradition became that a local family or organization would donate the tree. This year, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church donated the beautiful tree.

The Ridgewood High School choir provided music for the evening. Vicki Durben was in the crowd to support her daughter, Katie, who is a senior in the choir. She said Katie has been part of the choir for five years and loves being part of this great group of teenagers. Durben also said the last time the choir sang at the candlelighting, it was bitterly cold and she was glad it was a little warmer this time.

As a story about a special Christmas star was shared, the official village tree was lit up. The “aahhs” from the crowd proved the huge tree was beautiful. The official candlelighter for the evening was Megan Stonebraker, 2016 Canal Days Queen. She lit her candle from the candle on the stage and then lit the candles of people on the stage. Once each candle was lit, that candle lit another and the sounds of “Silent Night” filled the air. In just a few minutes, every person in the crowd was holding a lit candle and singing.

ODA issues health alert for raw milk REYNOLDSBURG - The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is issuing a health alert for unpasteurized raw milk and raw milk products from Sweet Grass Dairy’s herd share, due to contamination with Campylobacter. Sweet Grass Dairy is located in Knox County at 6049 Bryant Rd., Fredericktown, OH 43019.

This alert is the result of an investigation by ODA and the Ohio Department of Health after foodborne illnesses were reported in Franklin County. Later testing confirmed a connection between the illnesses and raw milk from Sweet Grass Dairy.

Campylobacter bacteria may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting within two to five days after exposure to the organism. Illness can last for up to a week or more and can be especially severe for those who have weakened or compromised immune
