yes, you can have fun ouTdoors! I was hoping to catch some youngsters sledding at the ever popular hill at the Coshocton Town & Country Club this past weekend and sure enough – they did not disappoint! These boys and girls were having a great time despite the frigid air on Saturday morning using all kinds of sleds, disks, and other contraptions that I did not even know existed, to ride down the hill. They had even built a small “ramp” to get the most out of their enjoyment. ahhh, the days of youth, warm fingers, toes and hot chocolate that brings back fond memories of our night-time sled runs down the lane or in the field at the old homestead on 541. and yes, i still hold the record among the neighborhood for the longest sled ride – that was across State route 541 with sparks flying from my runners and ending up in the old ohio Power parking lot. But regardless, one thing hasn’t changed all that much – the fun ride down the hill is always followed by that long trudge back uP the hill! More snow photos on page 2. Beacon Photo By Mark fortune

Coshocton: Despite the snowy weather and chilling cold, several dozen people joined with local officials at the Richard Downing Airport on Friday morning, Jan. 8. January 15th, 1950 Conesville Vikings nailed 10th straight win of the season to Radnor in Delaware on January 14th, 1950 under coach Herb Stoll. The score was 56-37. Radnor had only lost three games that season, two of which were to Conesville. Lanky Harold Moyer and Bob McDonald controlled rebounds off the backboard for Conesville with Moyer scoring 13 points for the Vikings. Don Albert scored 12 points and Tommy Mitchell scored 11 for the team. McDonald scored 10 points for Conesville to help claim their victory over Radnor.

January 17th, 1960 WTNS began broadcasting over its new antenna system located near Canal Lewisville, according to Bruce Wallace, president of Coshocton Broadcasting Company. The new facility replaced the antenna system in Roscoe, which had been in use since the station began in 1947. This former site had been sold to Ebony Coal Co who stripped the area for coal. Wallace said the new location will provide better conductivity for radio signals. The new antenna is the same height as the old one, but ground elevation at the new site is 750 feet above sea level compared to 1100 feet at the old site. The tower was purchased from Stainless Inc. in Philadelphia, PA. and was erected by Marshall Jacobs in Coshocton.

January 18th, 1970 The Coshocton Shrine Club donated $4,000 to the Aladdin Temple Crippled Children’s Hospital Fund, thanks to those who attended the Shrinabration the past July 4th at the Coshocton County Fair. A check was presented to Gordon Y. Boyd, potentate for the Shrine at Columbus by Ted Manson, retiring president of the club. The Coshocton Shrine Club scored first among the 42 Shrine Clubs in Ohio as the biggest contributor to the hospital fund.

January 13th, 1980 The Village of West Lafayette gathered at Andy’s Restaurant to honor the newly retired Chief of Police, Jerry Graham. He retired on January 1, 1980 after 20 years of service on the police department. More than 60 guests attended the event including West Lafayette Village Officials, representatives of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, Ohio 94th District Representative and James Ross, several representatives of local law enforcement agencies, and many friends. Graham received many gifts including a 35 mm camera from the Master of Ceremonies, Mayor James Griffith. Graham wanted to travel to Alaska after retiring to chase grizzly bears, moose and salmon. s we enter into 2010, I would like to send a very big and heartfelt “Thank You” to everyone who helped with the Community Food Pantry and the Community Outreach Dinners in 2009. You have sacrificed your time, energy, and money, showing your love and concern for our community. You volunteered your time to work, cook, bake, pack grocery bags, push grocery carts in all sorts of weather to peoples cars, unload trucks, serve people, donate food and financial gifts, and anything else you were asked to do to help our community. I thank all the Pastors who allowed offerings and food drives for the Pantry to take place in their churches, God Bless each of you! Thank you to local businesses and schools who helped including the VFW’s, American Legion, Am Vets, Kraft foods, and Annin Flag Company, as well as many private individuals. We could not have accomplished as much without the help of each and every one of you. May God’s very best always be yours. For the Community Outreach Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, we delivered 407 meals and fed 155 people in the church including some of our help. For the Christmas Dinner, we delivered 462 meals and including some of our help served 170 meals here in the church. There were a total of 82 turkeys and 15 hams cooked for the meals. There were very few leftovers from either of our dinners. We are currently serving over 700 people through the Food Pantry at this time. We purchased and gave out 218,481 pounds of food, which we purchased from the Mid-Ohio Foodbank for the Food Pantry in 2009 at a cost of $39,037.00. Our food costs held steady compared to last year for two reasons: 1) Due to the high unemployment rate in Coshocton County, we were able to purchase some of the food items for half price and 2) Mid-Ohio Foodbank in Columbus was given a generous donation to be used to help defray the cost of food purchased by New Life Ministries Community Food Pantry. We are thanking God and the Longaberger Foundation for this. We also distributed food from food drives, as well as around five thousand pounds of deer from the FHFH (Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry), and 78,229 pounds of fresh produce received at no cost to us. We are thankful for the Feeding America Program and Wal-Mart and our local Wal-Mart Store through which we received 20,333 pounds of food items consisting of dry goods, bakery, meat, produce, dairy, and deli items. We are doing the very best we can with what we have been given to help people. I had to stand in line at the grocery store the other day and felt impatient, I felt as though people were looking at me and I did not like it. I thought that is how the Food Pantry people must feel standing in line in the rain, cold, heat, and snow and that everyone driving by was looking at them. It is humiliating for many who have to come to a Food Pantry, but their backs are against the wall and they have to endure whatever to get food for themselves and their families. It can be as simple as naming who is in a photo, what is going on, or when and where a photo was taken. A quote from a friend or brief anecdote also make terrific additions. Another quick and easy option is to add a brief label or one-word reminder to a set of photos. For example, in a travel book, you might add “Bon Voyage” to a page with photos of your family leaving for a trip. For a book of a child’s first year, you might add “Milestones in the Making” for a page that shows baby’s first steps, first birthday cake, first haircut, and so on. The Rainbow Child Care Center in Coshocton is looking for a new partner to bring in more revenue to help them stay open to the community. But because of loss of state funding, the Rainbow Child Care Center that has been in the community for over twenty years, will be closing their doors on January 31. The Center is currently down from three infant/toddler classrooms to two. Staff hours have been cut in an attempt to keep the Center afloat, but to no avail. The Headstart program will remain under a new federal grant and will provide classes next month. “We want to thank the community and the families for their support,” said Rainbow Director, Amanda Armstrong, “Rainbow has been a part of this community for twenty plus years now. It’s going to be hard on the community and the staff to see this go.”

tune The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County and Club Scion have partnered to provide young women in our community with the opportunity to purchase a slightly worn – or even brand new – prom or formal dress at bargain prices. You can visit The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County on Main Street to shop for a dress the second Saturday of each month until prom season. This means that you can visit them on February 13 and March 13 from 10 am until 4 pm. With around 100 dresses to choose from, 20 pieces of jewelry, purses and even shoes, you can walk away feeling – and looking – like a queen. Jessie Tubbs said, “We have our own fitting rooms and the dresses range from $25 to $200 with most prices being negotiable. These dresses are here on consignment and we even have a couple of dresses that could be used for a wedding dress”. Tubbs also added her appreciation to Golden’s for the use of a dress rack. Laurie Stephan of Club Scion commented, “This is an opportunity to help the young people in our community with something that is a rite of passage – and especially considering the current economic times . . . some of these dresses have only been worn once – or even not at all. This is a win-win situation for everyone”. Tubbs stated that the consignment fees will go to help fund events for The Mentoring Center and scholarships that Club Scion gives away each year at Ridgewood High School. Coshocton C.A.R.E.S will conduct a FAFSA Assistance Night on Monday, Feb. 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Coshocton High School in the 3rd floor computer labs to assist parents and students in filing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information online for the 2010-11 school year. You will need record of any income earned by the parent and the student in 2009. Please bring the following to the workshop to assist in completing the FAFSA that night: Parent and student FAFSA PIN numbers. Warsaw Business Parents express appreciation, request no Association presents more cards for son You may recall an article in the December 16 legitimate but as of December 15, 2009, Nate’s check edition of The Coshocton County Beacon, parents, Dode McVey and Todd Elfrink, have titled, “Young boy with brain tumor wants Christmas cards”. The article appeared on page 11 and had a request from 7 and a half year old Nate Elfrink of West Jefferson, Ohio. He was requesting one million cards for Christmas! The Beacon, through someone in our community, has learned of a valuable website that provides updates on these circulating email requests. You can use this web resource to confirm if a particular request is legitimate and also to search out current information. The website is located at www.snopes.com. The situation about Nate is
requested that no more cards be sent. They appreciate the thousands of cards they received, but the amount has become too much for them to handle. The family asks that instead of sending Christmas cards, consider making a donation in Nate’s name to help other children. They recommended St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Hospice Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Both have provided Nate with care in the past. Many people feel some post-Christmas “blues.” For some people it’s unavoidable, some people catch a severe case of the blues while other people just go on as usual. We may feel a little blue after Christmas but we’re doing ourselves in. Many things contribute to the post-Christmas blues; absence of family, going back to work and school, didn’t get what I wanted, remorse, and just plain missing the action of Christmas. After-Christmas blues can’t be totally “beat” but they can be less blue. Get Off the “High”: Many people keep the shopping and spending going too long. It’s like a drug. You need to go “cold turkey” and move
on. Look Forward to Something Else: Set your sights on the next big event; Super Bowl Party, Valentine’s Day, that Spring Break ski or beach trip or whatever. Plan now for those things and put away some cash. You’ll feel better. Keep Helping Other People: Nothing is better for your blues and for other people than helping other people. Christmas is over but the giving should only be just starting. Do something nice for someone every day. Give the trash guy a few extra bucks for hauling away all that Christmas garbage, give bigger tips to restaurant servers, and give a flower to the grocery store check-out lady and other things like that. Make A Plan For Next Christmas: Take out a notebook and start planning for next Christmas. Evaluate what went right this year and what went wrong. Plan to do better next year.

Coshocton High School was the site for the one day Stitchco Wrestling Invitational that saw three area wrestlers earns championships. The event is normally held on a Friday and Saturday but a somewhat abbreviated version was held all day Saturday. Coach Brian Baughman of the Redskins said, “We have a pretty good mix of veterans and young kids. Our lineup is pretty solid but we got off to a slow start with the football playoffs. We’re improving every match – we have some young guys with a lot of potential.” Coach Baughman said some of the wrestlers to watch this year include, junior Zack Cantrell at 119 for the Stitchco meet, freshman Matt Gadfield at 130, who has a lot of potential and is continuing to show improvement, senior Layton Graves who wrestles at 189, Mason Ruby a sophomore who is solid at 135, Jacob Bresciani, a sophomore at 160 who is pretty good and Kevin Lepley, a senior and a pretty tough kid”. ready to go. Our inexperience is hurting – but our kids are learning. The one day format gives our young kids less experience but we will deal with that like everyone else here. Some of our kids to watch are senior Mark Hale in the 215 weight, sophomore Jake Ziegler at 152 and is coming off of a broken hand from football, Nathan Anderson, who is a 160 pound senior and Jake Conrad at 171 pounds. Someone that we have high hopes for is junior Jarod Conrad, at 145 pounds. He’s done well so far this season and we’re hoping he’ll have a breakout year. He is kind of our “go to” guy this season”. All three area wrestling coaches expressed their appreciation for the tournament and are looking forward to a good season from their wrestlers.
