Sarah Jane Lindsey retired from her position at the OSU Extension office at the end of the year after serving the people and youth of Coshocton County for over 30 years. The employees and people she worked with recently honored her with a retirement party held at The Frontier Power. We chatted with the people that worked with Sarah Jane and asked them what their favorite memory was. Alonna Hoffman said, “Sarah Jane had been at a directors meeting and was all dressed up. When she returned to the office she said, “Come out and check out the beaver in my van!” Apparently someone had hit a beaver on the road and she stopped to get it – she made all of us touch it – it was dead of course – and her idea was to have it stuffed and placed at 4-H Camp Ohio”. Kim Gress mentioned all the tailgate parties. “We are all huge Ohio State fans so during football season we would have a “tailgate” party at lunch. Well, we really needed a tailgate so one time Rod (Sarah Jane’s husband, Rod Lindsey) brought in an actual tailgate from an old pickup and we used that to hold our food. She (Sarah Jane) is a lot of fun!” Tammi Rogers remarked, “Every year as the Coshocton County fair marches ever closer, the office staff would get more and more frazzled – while Sarah Jane’s smile just got bigger and bigger. She lives for the fair and 4-H camp”. Janet Smith commented “One time Sarah Jane left me in charge of the baby chicks that had arrived for our 4-H youth. Now, I have an animal phobia – and by the time the last 4-H youth came to pick up their chicks – the remaining ones were dead. You see, I did not know that you were supposed to dip their beaks in sugar water – but how do you know which ones you’ve done that
Thank You All! The family of Suzanne Mounts would like to express a heartfelt Thank You to the staff of Bethesda Hospital, Given-Dawson Funeral Home, Pastor Ron Davis, Pastor Ivan Ford, Gospel Hill Ministries, Prairie Chapel Church, and all family and friends for all the prayers, food, flowers, and cards during the recent and unexpected death of my wife, and our mother. A special Thank You to all of our Cow Corner friends. An extra special Thank You to whoever the nurse was that performed CPR along the road until the squad came. Not enough words can express how wonderful you all are. May God bless each and every one of you. All of your generosity will never be forgotten.

with when there are so many chicks?” Debbie Bowman said her favorite memory is when Sarah Jane told her why we never use the word “assume” at the office!” Bob Buxton said he had so many memories but, “It would have to be the time we sang “Happy Birthday” to her during the junior fair livestock auction sale at the fair. She was totally embarrassed!” Jan Luce said laughingly, “It would have to be the prank that we pulled with Bobbi Hughes. You remember when the Ameriflora show was in Columbus – Bobbi was the “Clover Critter” at the time. This was a mascot for the Clover Buds program in 4-H. We had someone from the Chamber call her and tell her that they wanted her to go and be a part of Ameriflora with the Clover Critter. This also happened to be during 4-H Camp and Bobbi is a huge part of that and a big help to Sarah Jane. She kept trying to come up with ways to tell Sarah Jane that she would not be able to help at 4-H camp – and she kept trying to find a hotel room – of course they were all taken due to the Ameriflora – finally we had to tell Bobbi that it was just a prank. I think she finally forgave us!” Sarah Jane Lindsey exclaimed about the retirement party, “I’m really amazed that this many people came today. It means a lot to me that this many people both locally and from out of our area took the time to come”. In addition to dozens of local friends, family, co-workers, youth, fair and 4-H supporters attending, local officials including Mayor Steve Mercer and the Coshocton County Commissioners also attended. Several extension office representatives from around the state also came to show their appreciation to Sarah Jane Lindsey for a job well done. The Coshocton County Beacon knows that the local 4-H community, 4-H Camp Ohio and the Coshocton County Junior Fair will be missing a big piece this coming year without the presence and enthusiasm of Sarah Jane Lindsey. You will be missed. Now, go enjoy that grandchild!

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration was held Sunday, Jan. 17 at the St. Andrews AME Church in Coshocton. The event was organized by Yvonne Ross, who was celebrating her 84th birthday and the Rev. Philip Hunt. Refreshments were served following the celebration by the Coshocton BPW. The Rev. Edward Henson, pastor at St. Andrews AME Church, had an enthusiastic opening telling those present to “Run for Jesus”. Yvonne Ross read some excerpts from previous editions of The Coshocton Tribune, saying that, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream and he lived the dream. By working together and gathering together like this we can keep Dr. King’s dream alive”. Coshocton Mayor Steve Mercer welcomed those in attendance and used the Haiti tragedy to reflect that “People are coming together and I can’t help but think that was what Dr. King dreamed about. Hardship can bring us together – that is happening in this community as well”. Mayor Mercer concluded by commenting that, “The significance of this event is not validated by the numbers present but by those that attend”. State Representative Troy Balderson read the scripture lesson, Luke 4:16-21. A four person choir provided special music with a stirring rendition of “Glory, Glory,

Thank a National Guard Man or Woman Letter to the editor by William M. Owens, Coshocton With the demise of the draft and the difficulty of the all volunteer military to complete its mission, the United States has relied more heavily upon the National Guard for missions on foreign soil. In December, the 1st Battalion, 137th Aviation Regiment, returned home from a one-year tour of duty in Iraq. Joe Klier, West Lafayette, Ohio, was one member of the Battalion. While in Iraq, the Battalion completed its year-long mission of transportation and forward assault with Apache Helicopters. Joe Klier was a member of ground support Company E. The assault group flew over 15,000 flight hours, assaulted pockets of resistance and suspected bomb-making sites, and transported without incident over 15,000 civilian and military persons including over 500 dignitaries, generals, the Commanding General
of the allied Forces in Iraq, and the United States Ambassador to Iraq. Between twenty and twenty-four Apache Helicopters were flightready twenty-four hours a day. The Battalion received 95% efficiency rating, the highest of all Apache Helicopter Battalions and all men and women came home alive. Joe Klier is the husband of Ashley Klier, the son-in-law of Bill and Carol Owens, all of West Lafayette, Ohio, and the son of Ron and Marian Klier, St. Clairsville, Ohio. Joe has been employed locally be WTNS and InTrust. Ashley is employed by Ridgewood Schools. These employers have been very supportive of the Ohio National Guard. William M. The restaurant is part of the recent resurgence of businesses locating to the South Second Street area. The restaurant offers pizza, subs, wings and pasta with the main feature being a pizza buffet. The buffet has a variety of pizza, pastas, antipasti salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw, soup, cottage cheese, fruit salad and desserts, including dessert pizzas. Crowtown Pizza will also have beer available beginning February 1. Ralston stated that the new location and full service family restaurant is, “More of the vision that I had for our business. I have a passion for cooking and relating to people”. When asked how the name “Crowtown Pizza” was discovered, Ralston said, “After I bought the business (Wally’s Pizza) from Matt Hanes I was talking to the late Matt Lingo and he said, “Why not just call it Crowtown Pizza, Bud”? I liked that name and it stuck – so I really give Matt credit for helping us get going”. Marty and his wife Tammria have been married for 17 years and have three children, Derik, Brooke and Colton. The couple met at Longaberger where they both used to work. Ralston explained that the restaurant will eventually be adding hamburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, ribs and more. Crowtown Pizza employs 20 people and Ralston exclaimed, “There are just so many people to thank for helping us expand and relocate our business. January, 22 1950 Coshocton music lovers have something to sing about. The Coshocton High School choir director, Mr. Harold LeFavor, has announced that he will be forming an alumni choir for the high school. Any former member of the Coshocton High School Choir is welcome to join. All parties interested are to report to the high school on Thursday, January 26 at 8 p.m. for a meeting and brief rehearsal. The regular rehearsals will be once a week at a time to be discussed at the meeting on Thursday. LeFavor said one reason he wanted to form an alumni choir was because membership dwindles during graduation and he hopes the alumni choir can “pick up the slack” so to speak.
help us out with this move. There are just so many people in our community working hard to provide jobs and help each other along in these challenging times – and that is the way it should be. Most businesses realize that in order for one small business to be successful everyone needs to be successful. I just really want to thank everyone that helped us out”. When asked about how the new location and expansion of the business is helping the community, Ralston said, “This new location and full service restaurant provides more jobs and a place for people to go within our community. You can come in and sit down and relax – and this helps keep our money local. I believe in local and we purchase as much of our food products locally that we can”. Crowtown Pizza is open Monday thru Thursday 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to midnight and Sunday from noon to 10 pm. extensive rehabilitation. She had to learn how to tie her shoes, feed herself, walk, button her clothes, and other everyday activities other people take for granted. Because of the accident, she has severe nerve damage in one foot. Jenn says she used to enjoy the outdoors, walking, jogging, hiking, camping, and white water rafting. Now, she says she still can enjoy some of those activities, but to a lesser extent. There have also been some positive things in Jenn’s life after the car accident. She received a new pancreas and kidney in October of 2006. Unfortunately, the kidney failed three years later, with no apparent reason, but the pancreas is still going strong. Because of this, Jenn no longer has diabetes. She’s had an increase in eye sight, circulation, and says she feels better now than she did when she had diabetes. “At birthday parties, I could only have cake or ice cream,” she said, “Now, I don’t have to make a choice. I can have both. I can experience new foods I’ve never been able to have before.” Jenn credits her husband and her many friends as helping her through her trying times. She also has a strong faith in God and believes that He has given her the strength she has needed to make it through. “He’s the strongest point, the love of my life,” she said about her husband, Chris, “He was always there pushing me, telling me I could do it and no to give up. He’s the reason I’m here today.” Monday, Wednesday and Friday of every week since October has been spent at Davita Dialysis, ever since her transplant kidney has failed. She’s there a total of twelve hours every week. Jenn has also become an advocate for organ

Technological advances and an aging population have led to the expansion of the home health care industry in recent years. Older individuals dealing with age-related conditions, patients recovering from surgery and those with chronic illness can benefit from a variety of home health care equipment, products and services. Home-based patients will find help from blood pressure meters, home dialysis, mobility devices and respiratory equipment. Home health care products can assist with ostomy and mastectomy care, pain management, physical therapy and bathroom safety. Services, such as nursing care, meal preparation and housecleaning are also available to at-home patients. This column will highlight the various ways the profession is working to keep patients where they are most comfortable - at home. We at INTERIM HEALTHCARE would like to welcome you to our new weekly column on home heathcare issues. We hope you find upcoming installments to be both interesting and informative. We know that no two home care situations are alike, so we make sure we can meet your needs, on a part-time or full-time basis. We have been Medicare certified since 1981 and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide a broad array of home care and supportive services, including RNs, LPNs, therapists, medical social work, home care aides, enterostomal therapy, and IV therapy. Call 877-759-2106 to learn more about what we can do for you. Our address is 420 Downtowner Plaza. Home care delivered right to your door. P.S. Private health insurance, Medicaid and Medicare may cover some or all of home health care costs in many selected circumstances.
Still strong Jennifer Wilson is in need of a new kidney after being in a car accident in October of 2002. She has received a new pancreas, which has cured her diabetes, and also received a new kidney in 2006, but it failed last October. Ever since, Jenn spends twelve hours a week at Davita Dialysis. Although she has suffered much hardship in her life, Jenn is a very upbeat and positive person. She says it’s all about looking at what you do have in life, not at what you don’t. Beacon photo by beth dulaney donation. She encourages the community to sign up to be either a living or deceased organ donor. In order to have a successful kidney match, Jenn needs someone with Type O blood to donate their kidney. She also stresses that people know the facts about donating. “If you can give that chance of life to someone, what price can you put on that?” she said. For more information about becoming a living donor, contact Jennifer Wilson at 740622-1104 or The Ohio State University Pre Transplant Clinic at 1-800-293-8965. For more information about being a deceased donor, contact Lifeline at 740-623-8416. One deceased organ donor can potentially save thirty to forty people. Jennifer Wilson of Coshocton was in the prime of her life when she had a horrible car accident two days before Christmas in 2002. Since then, her life has changed drastically, some for the better. “You have to look at what you have,” she said, “not at what you don’t.” When Jennifer was only four years old, she was diagnosed with diabetes. Luckily, she was able to keep her disease under control until the day of her car accident. As she was driving down the road, Jenn’s blood sugar dropped and she basically fell asleep at the wheel with her foot still on the accelerator. Moments later, her car crashed and she was severely injured. Unfortunately, one soul was lost in the accident, Nathaniel, Jenn’s baby boy she had been carrying in her womb for 20 ½ weeks. “I would do it all again, go through all the pain, learn how to walk and feed myself again if I could only bring my little boy back,” she said. After the car accident, Jenn went through

Halleleujah” during the celebration while Valerie McMarrow and Kayla Chandler shared a reflection and a poem. Linda Yoder sang the song that was notably Dr. King’s favorite, “If I Can Help Somebody” accompanied on the piano by Sarah King. Jan Shannen also provided special music on her guitar. Yvonne Ross provided her gift of playing the piano during the celebration. The guest speaker was the Rev. Dr. LaTaunya Bynum, who spoke on “From Heritage to Horizon”. Dr. Bynum reflected on the Ebenezer Baptist Church that has become a destination in Atlanta as it was the church led by Dr. King. This destination brought prestige to the congregation but also caused angst as the members competed for seats with visitors. The church eventually decided – following much discussion and debate – to build a new church near the current site. The sanctuary in the old church is known as “The Heritage Sanctuary” while the new sanctuary is called “The Horizon Sanctuary”. Dr. Bynum explained that Dr. King understood the heritage while he also kept his eye on the horizon. “The horizon is yet out there and is a light in the glimmer of darkness”. Dr. Bynum also told those present that, “For people of faith, the Bible is our heritage and our horizon”.
