So You Think You’re Tough? Mark’s Musings

MARK FORTUNE Pictured are a group of unidentified Boy Scouts that attended the annual Klondike Derby and camped outside in frigid temperatures. (Beacon photo by Mark Fortune)

Boy Scouts from around the area convened at the Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 16, 17 and 18 for the annual running of the Klondike Derby. The Klondike Derby is where a group of scouts pull a sled that they have built on a preestablished course with several stops – or stations. The stations range from building a fire and cooking pancakes to first aid, compass reading and more. Essentially the Derby is about learning to survive in the outdoors. Landon Arnold, of host Troop 438, which meets at Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, was this year’s program director. Arnold explained that the Klondike Derby is meant to “help scouts learn to survive in the

winter time and brave the elements. We’ll be testing scout skills at each station with a set time limit. The scouts have to make a pancake in a mess kit is one example of this”, Arnold explained. When asked to comment on the weekends activities during the harsh weather conditions, Arnold quickly quipped, “Mother’s don’t camp!” Glenn Fischer, the local district chairman of the Boy Scouts, said that, “this is the first time we’ve let a boy run the event – that’s why we ordered the low temperatures and the snow!” Jeff Wickerham, Senior District Executive with the Muskingum Valley Council of the Boy Scouts added that, “we want to try and make sure the boys were prepared. We talked to each

scout master – if a boy was uncomfortable they did not have to participate. This event is meant to provide an opportunity to challenge these boys and give them (the boys) a chance to achieve and survive in these extreme temperatures. We had a meeting to make sure everyone knew the signs of frostbite – and were prepared”. Wickerham reported that there were 56 youth and adults camping with 40 of those spending Friday night outdoors in the frigid temperatures. A low temperature of minus 23 degrees was recorded early Saturday morning – a new record for the Klondike Derby. In fact, as one scout explained, “this is the first time we’ve actually had snow for the Derby that I have participated in!”

A

new President, a new direction and a new spirit of energy for the country has emerged from Washington D.C. That is what I see happening right now with the Barack Obama administration. The majority of the pundits are saying that the first 100 days in office are critical and the timeframe to make things happen. While I agree that the first 100 days are most important, I think it is going to take longer than that to get the country moving again in the proper direction. Setting the proper stage will be key. 2009 may very well be a challenging year as areas of the country not previously affected by the economic downturn are

now being thrust into the spotlight. I believe that we are adjusted to operating in a sluggish environment although there may still be some pain to endure as we monitor the recent cutbacks at the city and county level. These things are happening throughout the nation as local governments find themselves having to adjust to meet reduced taxes and less federal funding. Despite all of these conditions, our area is well poised for economic recovery and our leaders in local civic groups, government, business, faith and education are doing everything they can to work together and minimize the losses locally. The Coshocton County Commissioners are continuing to push forward with the rural broadband initiative which will have a deep and long lasting positive impact on our economy and open up our citizens to the world through the internet. Opportunities abound in this technological arena and one only has to look at the impact from YouTube, FaceBook, Google, Yahoo! or any of the dozens of other internet based companies to see that our

industrial landscape has changed forever. America is based on creativity and innovation, with scientists and inventors finding ways to help our country when it needed it most. The cotton gin, the combine, the electric light bulb and the steam engine transformed America and generated wealth beyond measure – but not without loss for many. Ask a canal boat captain what he thought of the locomotive and you probably had to hold your ears! I believe that we are once again facing similar challenges – and changes – in our country. Educating ourselves about new technology, new industries and new devices is what America is all about. Hang on world, and watch the people of America rise to the challenge once again! The President has asked us to do our part to help. Super Bowl prediction – Cardinals 24, Steelers 21. Kurt Warner will do it again.

With classes at Union Elementary cancelled for the day, the energetic youngsters went sledding on the hill behind their home. Early that morning their dad, Stan Hardesty, managed to get to work in Coshocton despite less-than-favorable road conditions. Devore proceeded to organize the first Guns vs. Hoses Charity Basketball Game that will be played at noon on Saturday, January 31, at Kids America. “We have about 20 players on the Sheriff’s Office team and there are around 24 on the Fire Department team,” she said. “All the proceeds from the game, 50/50 drawing and concessions will benefit George.” Hare is a firefighter with

started brainstorming for their project in late October with artists Steven Matthew Brown, Jack Walker, and Anne Cornell, director of The Pomerene Center, who stated, “This is the highlight of our year. Over sixty hours has been invested in this – lots of brainstorming and organizational work went in to the kids efforts. These kids like talking to people”. One of the students, Megan Carroll, said that “I never thought I could help with volunteering – it made me feel good about myself”. Carroll, along with fellow students Kaelie Darr, Cassie Holmes, Tiffany Jennings and Changdera Mack, volunteered at the Good Shepherd Christian Assembly located on Main Street in Coshocton. The students helped prepare and serve food. The first of the three videos, titled “Time Well Spent”, focused on encouraging volunteerism and the time that the above mentioned students spent at the Good Shepherd Christian Assembly. The second video, titled “From Power Line to Plate”, was a humorous look at the lowly pigeon – or squab – as a food source. The video pointed out that in many countries Pigeon is considered a delicacy. Students Jon Geary, Bryear Mitchem, Robert Reber, Devin Taylor and Josh Vestal interviewed several area residents about squab. Believe it or not, there were some folks that knew squab

Fourteen students from the Coshocton Opportunity School worked with the Pomerene Center for the Arts to produce three separate videos for their Media Arts Project. is actually pigeon! The highlight of the video had to be the boys ordering squab at several of Coshocton’s fast food establishments. No, none serve squab but the boys had a couple of pretty convincing moments! And of course, what video would be complete without an actual sampling of pigeon – which the boys all exclaimed that they would try again! The third video documented the need for donations at the two of the local food pantries in our community; New Life Ministries and the Open Pantry of Nellie. Participating students were Devon Brady, Cody Darr, Jeanee Gerthing and Dylon Hawk. These students interviewed Pastor Mark Granger of New

Life Ministries and Sharon Kirck at the Open Pantry of Nellie. The students discovered and documented the need for quality and nutritious food such as; canned goods without syrup and low in sodium. There were several questions from the audience during this segment regarding what the local food pantries and the Good Shepherd Christian Assembly need with mainly food and monetary donations being the response. Devon Brady said that the most important thing she gained from this experience is that there is a lot to be learned and “to treat others the way you want to be treated – I realized that I would want someone to help me if necessary”.

A circus theme will be the backdrop for this year's Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids' Sake event on February 20 and 21 at the Coshocton Bowling Lanes. A special school bowl event will be held on February 27 for school-aged teams. Available bowling times are11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Teams are encouraged to call 623-8110 to reserve a lane. Sheila Mayse, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), says the annual event, now in its 28th year, is the primary fundraiser for them raising nearly 50% of the agency’s annual budget."The goal this year is to raise $45,000," she said. "Last year the event brought in just over $39,000. I feel this goal is attainable. If every bowler we had last year returns this year and raises an additional $12.00, we can meet goal." Mayse says the circus theme will feature "Merf the Clown", who will bring balloon animals and air brushed tattooing. "We will also have large picture cutouts for teams to get their photo taken as one of their favorite circus entertainers," explained Mayse. "This year’s cutout photo board was designed by Big Sister and artist Kelsey Schott and painted by Littles and Peer Mentors participating in the BBBS program."

information about their businesses to share with bowlers at the event," stated Mayse. Mayse says she is anxiously awaiting the formation of the teams for next month's event. "It's always very nerve wracking waiting for the teams to call in for information," admitted Mayse. "We have great return teams each year. Annin & Co. usually brings several teams and last year they had 17. Ridgewood Middle School was also a huge supporter last year bringing a large number of teams." Mayse says she hopes to see some challenges developed among teams such as between the Rotary Club and Kiwanis. Bowl for Kids' Sake is also a good way to increase the awareness of the needs BBBS has for volunteers. Currently there are 19 community based matches in their traditional program with 21 children on a waiting list. "The majority of those waiting are boys," said Mayse. "There are a lot of little boys in our community who need positive male role models."

They have around 30 teens who serve as peer mentors during group events. "This provides training opportunities for the teen volunteers to learn more about mentoring," stated Mayse. "We also have the Side-by-Side parent mentoring which matches inexperienced young parents with more experienced parents offering them a support system." SMILES is a school based mentoring program that focuses on both the academic and social development of children in the school setting. Volunteers commit to meeting with the child in the school for one class period per week. They also offer a program for mentoring children of incarcerated parents. BBBS is a United Way agency, with last year’s allocation comprising 10% of the budget. The remaining is derived from donations, fundraisers, and grants. Mayse is hopeful that there will be at least 95 teams as there have been in the past. In addition to that number, there are usually nearly 50 schools teams that participate. The five-person teams have two hours to bowl two games. They receive a free Dominoes pizza and enjoy the DJ music of Big D's Music on the Run. "Funds are raised by individuals on the teams, who raise money on behalf of the agency," explained Mayse. "Each adult team member is asked to raise at least $50.00. Anyone who raises $75 or more gets one of the Bowl for Kids' Sake T-shirts." Additional funds come from sponsorships from local businesses, including corporate and lane sponsorships. This year’s corporate sponsors are Coshocton Bowling Lanes, Domino’s Pizza, and Kraft Foods. Bowling lanes are also available for sponsorship. At the $100.00 level, lane sponsors are recognized with a banner placed above the lanes. "We encourage sponsors to provide us with

The census will help to update records on current members and the survey will give direction to the Stewardship Committee for future programs and activities within the parish. Parishioners that are currently registered with Sacred Heart Church will receive the census and survey, along with a cover letter, in the mail. It may be completed by all adults in the
