HOT TIME IN CHILI! It was a hot time in Chili – that is, the town of Chili Sunday evening. The Chili Crossroads Bible Church held its annual Hot
Wings and Wild Game Dinner on Feb. 12. Despite chilly temperatures outside, it was hot indoors as contestants munched on a variety of hot wing recipes. Prior to the contest, local officials judged what they thought to be the best wings. Pictured above is 10 year old Alex Haarman, who tied with older brother, Anthony (13) for junior champion. They each consumed eight wings. Mike Bechtol downed 13 wings to claim the senior division. Alex simply said, ‘Hot”, when asked for a one word quote. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

TO BY JOSIE McCORMICK Fifty years ago snow wasn’t cleared off roads as efficiently as it is today. “Guys used to ride in the back of a truck with shovels and throw cinders out,” said Fred Wachtel, county engineer. Wachtel was one of 16 people who attended the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum’s Feb. 9, Our Town Stories discussion group. The group meets the second Thursday of each month and attendees are invited to share memories from their past or retell stories that their parents or neighbors

have told them over the years. The theme of the Feb. 9 meeting was Snow, Plowing, Games & Memorable Storms. Dan Markley shared pictures of snow on Main Street in the 1950s and also spoke about the blizzard of 1978. “I really kind of enjoyed it,” he said. “No one could get in or out. Our electric stayed on, we had a fire in the fire place and our kids at home.” Dan’s wife, June commented that the blizzard was so bad because of the wind that came with it. “The snow drifted badly,” she said. “We had a rope from the house to the barn so we could get down there and back.” The group also talked about building snowmen, constructing forts and sled riding. “I heard Jack Baumgardner and other old timers talk about sliding down Hill Street and that

Coshocton man plans to vote for Susan Turner
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I have been a resident of Coshocton County for over 60 years. I don’t make a habit of writing letters to the newspapers. In fact, this is the first time and probably the last. We are fast approaching election time and I want to make sure that the people of Coshocton County are aware of a very qualified and sincere candidate. Her name is Susan Turner and she is candidate for Coshocton County Recorder. She is currently Chief Deputy Recorder in the Recorder’s Office and she has worked in that office for more than 20 years. Over the past ten years, I have been a Property Title Searcher and as such, have spent many, many hours in the Recorder’s Office. During this period of time, I have become well acquainted with Susan, her work habits and business ethics. She is a very dependable and punctual County employee. Susan is very intelligent and knows all the ins and outs of the Recorder’s Office. She will make a very good successor to David Dilly. The County Recorder’s Office contains a wealth of information concerning property (deeds), leases and mortgages. Susan is the best at

locating information. She is very diligent in her searches and will continue looking until she finds the information or determines that it is not in the files. Her job can be very stressful, especially at the present time with so many out of town oil and gas searches in such a small office. She keeps her composure and works well under pressure. She develops new ideas and procedures so that the daily routine runs smoothly. Susan is very customer-relationorientated. Sometimes people coming into the office present very little information. Other times, they are irritated, impatient, or just plain rude. She handles these situations with diplomacy and patience and usually is able to help these people. Of course, there are times when you just can’t satisfy a person. If you are looking for a dependable, intelligent, wellqualified candidate with a wealth of experience, then vote for Susan Turner for Coshocton County Recorder. I can assure you that all of Coshocton County will be proud to have her as their Recorder.

Members of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office recently met with business owners to arm them with knowledge that will hopefully curb a recent rash of break-ins in the area. The meeting was held Feb. 7 at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites and hosted by the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce and the sheriff’s office. More than 60 people gathered to hear a variety of crime prevention tips presented by Deputy Steve Fox. Fox spoke about alarm systems, sufficient lighting in and around businesses and video recording equipment. “Videos are a great asset for law enforcement,” he said. “We can look at the recording and find out who was inside when they shouldn’t have been.” Fox also discussed the need for employees to pay attention during the day to who is coming in and out of the business. “When I go into Tractor Supply whoever is at the register turns and says hi even if they are working with someone,” he said. “If I go in and I’m up to no good I’m going to have in the back of my mind that you just saw me.” Business owners were also encouraged to watch out for suspicious vehicles. “If a vehicle pulls into your parking lot and no one comes out of it for a while we have no problem with you calling us and saying something doesn’t feel right,” Fox said. “We will pull up and check that person out.” It also is helpful to get license plate information and descriptions of the vehicle and the people in them. “If we get a vehicle stopped the description you give us has to match the people in it,” Fox said. He also encouraged business owners to exercise caution if they find themselves involved in a robbery. “Years ago criminals robbed banks, but now it is restaurants, carry outs and places like Circle Ks,” Fox said. “These types of robberies are becoming more and more common and if you

Park National Corporation reports fourth quarter and year end financial results CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON
Park National Corporation announced financial results for the three months (fourth quarter) and year ended Dec. 31, 2011. The financial statements include the effect of a restatement of previously reported results due to a change in the timing for recognition of losses at Park’s Florida-based subsidiary Vision Bank. Park also reported a record high in net income for The Park National Bank, Park’s subsidiary that consists of 11 community banking divisions in Ohio. On Jan. 31, 2012, Park filed a Current Report on form 8-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission, describing Park’s plan to restate the results for the year ended Dec. 31, 2010, and each quarterly period in 2011. The restatements include recognition of loan loss provisions and other real estate owned devaluations at Vision Bank in 2010 instead of 2011. The result was a reduction in 2010 net income of $16.1 million, or $1.06 per diluted common share, all affecting the fourth quarter of 2010. The reduction to 2010 net income is fully offset by an increase to net income during 2011. Park previously announced net income for the year ended Dec. 31, 2010, of $74.2 million, or $4.51 per diluted common share and net income for the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2011, of $60.0 million, or $3.61 per diluted common share. All amounts discussed in the remainder of this news release represent the restated results for 2010 and 2011. Park’s net income was $84.7 million for the year ended Dec. 31, 2011 (2011 year) and its net income was $58.1 million for the same period in 2010. Net income for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $13.2 million, compared to a loss of $3.4 million for the same period in 2010. Net income per diluted common share for the 2011 year was $5.12, compared to $3.45 per diluted common share for the same period in 2010. Net income (loss) per diluted common share for the 2011 fourth quarter was $0.76, compared to $(0.32) per diluted common share in the fourth quarter of 2010. Ohio Operational Results Excluding Vision Bank, Park reported net income of $104.7 million for the 2011 year,

compared to $103.5 million for the same period in 2010. This performance resulted in return on average assets of 1.62 percent and 1.58 percent for Park’s Ohio operations in 2011 and 2010, respectively. Additionally, Park’s two Ohiobased subsidiaries, The Park National Bank and Guardian Financial Services Company, reported record annual net incomes of $106.9 million and $2.7 million, respectively, for 2011. Credit Quality Park significantly reduced non-performing assets during 2011. At December 31, 2011, non-performing assets were $272.6 million, or 3.91 percent of total assets, compared to $334.6 million or 4.59 percent of total assets at Dec. 31, 2010. Vision Bank reduced non-performing loans by approximately $70 million during 2011, accounting for most of this large decline. Sale of Investment Securities During 2011, Park realized a pre-tax gain of $28.8 million from the sale of approximately $581 million of investment securities. During 2010, Park realized a pre-tax gain of $11.9 million from the sale of approximately $448 million of investment securities. Headquartered in Newark, Park National Corporation has $7.0 billion in total assets (as of Dec. 31, 2011). Park consists of 13 community bank divisions and two specialty finance companies. Park’s Ohio-based banking operations are conducted through Park subsidiary The Park National Bank and its divisions which include Fairfield National Bank Division, Richland Bank Division, Century National Bank Division, First-Knox National Bank Division, Farmers & Savings Bank Division, United Bank Division, Second National Bank Division, Security National Bank Division, Unity National Bank Division, The Park National Bank of Southwest Ohio & Northern Kentucky Division and Scope Leasing, Inc. “Please get rid of any bricks or large stones you have laying around,” he said. Twenty-three robberies have taken place at businesses since January, but the sheriff’s office has some ideas of who might be committing the crimes. “We want this solved as quickly as we can, but we want a good case,” Rogers said. “The community has been very good at helping us. We’ve gotten a lot of phone calls and tips and will piece together what is good and bad information.” Business owners also were encouraged to provide the sheriff’s office with contact information for their establishment in case something happens at night. “Keep it updated,” Rogers said. “I can’t tell you how many times we’ve called a number only to find out that the person had been let go, retired or simply was not there anymore.” Sandy Kreis, an employee of Clark’s Bar &

BY JOSIE McCORMICK PLAYTIME Clara Yoder, 3, takes a break from driving her car to look at a toy teapot. She was playing at the Coshocton Parent and Toddlers group meeting which is held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Church of the Nazarene. Parents, grandparents or anyone looking after a child between the ages of 0-3 is welcome to attend the program. There are lots of toys for the children to play with and refreshments for them and the adults. The program is organized by Heather Swanson who moved to Coshocton from Scotland with her children and husband who is working at Missionary Maintenance Service. Swanson enjoyed a similar program in Scotland and wanted to give caretakers of young children in Coshocton a place to go to socialize and let their children play with others their age. Cost is $2 per child and there is no charge for adults. Those who decided to become members only need to pay $1 per child. Your first meeting is free and becoming a member is optional. Fees go toward the cost of refreshments. For information, call 740-552-5220. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE

February 17th, 1952 When Charles Milligan was 13 years old, he helped an older man to his home when he came upon him sitting on the side of the road. The man was James Ogilvie, a veteran from the War of 1812. As a reward, Ogilvie gave the boy a coin that was fresh from the mint and had never been owned by anyone else. This small act of kindness started a hobby for Charles, who was well into his 80’s at this time. Over the years, he had collected coins and paper money, some dating as far back as the 1700s. He also had autographed dollar bills featuring names like Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Gen. George Patton.

The teams competing from Coshocton were Speaks Jewelry, Fortune Shoe Service, Corner Carry-Out, Thompson Sunoco, Coshocton Ceramic Tile, and Coshocton Recreation.

Keirsten Ashcraft, a senior soccer player for River View, signed her letter of intent to play soccer for the Youngstown State Penguins in a ceremony held Friday, Feb. 10 at the high school. Ashcraft said, “It’s really exciting and it’s also kind of a relief. I looked for awhile to try and choose a school and now I finally know. They have a really good program that I want, I’m going into biology and I’m also looking forward to playing with a really good soccer team. It’s exciting all around.” “I feel really blessed to have other girls that feel the way I do and have the passion of soccer like I do, and to be coached by one of the best coaches around. He’s hands down the best coach I’ve ever had.” Ashcraft said she would miss, “The teacher support, the different coaches, my friends, our team - we like to win - and we’re always there for each other.” One of her favorite memories is winning the ECOL this year. “I want to thank everyone that has been there to support me and helping me figure out which school to go to and I also want to thank River View for helping me with everything and especially Coach Kridler. He’s the reason I work so hard, he’s always been there for me, he pushes me and I’m just really thankful for him, my mom and dad and family,” said Ashcraft. River View varsity soccer coach Dave Kridler said, “We’re very gratified and happy for her. She’s made the sacrifices to play at the next level. Keirsten has the technical and physical strength to play at a Division I school. Youngstown State scouted her when she was injured – but they could see both pieces that she can bring – her dedication and fitness – they will be pleasantly surprised at what she can contribute.” “She’s such a likeable kid, you want her to have success,” said Kridler. “She’ll bring a lot of qualities to Youngstown State that maybe they’re underestimating. I would like to thank her parents for going through this methodically – and
being patient with the process – they found a great opportunity for her playing and her education.” Keirsten’s dad, Aaron Ashcraft said, “We’re very proud of her. She’s worked very hard for a lot of years for the accomplishment that she’s earning. I believe that it’s the right fit for her academically and athletically. We’d like to thank Coach Kridler for his input. He’s a big part of this – it has taken all of us working together to make it happen.” River View athletic director Rod Lindsey said, “We’re real excited for Keirsten. Not only is this our second signing in two weeks but she’s going to a Division I school, Youngstown State in the Horizon League. It will be a very, very competitive situation but we know they’re getting a kid that is very competitive and
we’re sure that she’s up to that challenge. It’s exciting for everyone here to send someone with Keirsten’s spirit to the next level and we’re sure that she’ll do just fine there.” Lindsey said that the annual Labor Day soccer showcase organized by Coach Kridler gives college coaches the opportunity to see the talent and ability that is available. “College coaches came to that event to see these girls and that kind of opened up doors, and it’s becoming something that he wants it to become. It’s exciting that he’s keeping that event alive and it’s just another way of helping the kids out to further their education and athletic careers.” MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

RENOVATIONS The emergency department and the second floor of Coshocton Hospital are being renovated. The second floor projects will be done in four separate
phases and include adding private bathrooms to rooms that do not already have them and other updates such as fresh paint jobs and new flooring. BEACON PHOTO
BY JOSIE McCORMICK The days of trying to decide on going to the emergency room or the medical clinic will soon be over at Coshocton Hospital. Starting Thursday, March 1, the hospital will have a new approach to its emergency room department and also introduce the QuickCare facility. “We were making you decide how sick you were instead of us,” said Mary Ellen Given, marketing coordinator at the hospital. “Now the first person you see when you come to the emergency department will be a triage nurse who will decide if you need to see an emergency room physician or go to QuickCare.” The triage nurse will be where the emergency room registration desk and switchboard are currently located. The old triage area will become an office for emergency medical services personnel and the switchboard will move to the business annex. QuickCare will be around the corner from the emergency department where the business office once was. “When you are dealing with a hospital you just never have enough space,” Given said. “We cleared out the old business space and moved them to the annex to make space for the expanded emergency department.” Patients who are directed to QuickCare will be seen on a first come first served bases. “In the emergency room it’s the sickest that are seen first,” Given said. QuickCare will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week and patients will be treated in the emergency room when it is closed. The area will have its own staff, but because it will be adjacent to the emergency room the two departments will be able to help each other out if necessary. It also will have a waiting room, five exam bays and two regular sized exam rooms that will be more private. Many items in QuickCare such as countertops, sinks and cabinets will be refurbished from the medical clinic on the ground floor, which will close at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17. QuickCare also will have a comfortable
more modern feel. “We are getting rid of that 1950s look,” Given said. Starting Tuesday, March 13, patients also will be registered at bedside when the hospital introduces Meditech, a new electronic records system. “You use to have to stand at the registration window when you didn’t feel good and answer a lot of questions,” Given said. Now a portable cart will be brought to your treatment room and your registration information can be taken while you are sitting or lying down. “It will allow all departments to communicate and give more comfort to the patient,” Given said. The emergency department is not the only place the hospital is making changes. The second floor also is receiving a facelift in four separate phases. The first step is to update rooms 211, 213, and 215 and change their shared bathroom facilities to private ones. Step two is to add updates to the nine rooms from 217 to 229 that already have private bathrooms. “We are trying out new wall colors and will have nice wood floors,” said Joe Slominski, director of facilities. The third phase includes remodeling the outpatient and prep/recovery areas and the fourth is to renovate the hallway, second floor lobby and the waiting area. The second floor changes will be completed as funds through donations are available and the emergency department renovations were done with operating money. “We want to be good stewards of our money,” said Rick Davis, chief operating officer of support services. “That is why we are shutting down the medical clinic Feb. 17 and taking what we already have downstairs and moving it upstairs and not buying new.” As much work as possible also is being done by the hospital’s own plumbing, electrical and maintenance staff.
“They get to know the building very well,” Slominski said. The hospital also launched a new website in December and has plans to offer a new service that was not previously available in Coshocton County in the space that was occupied by the medical clinic. The changes are all being made with the patient’s comfort and quality of care in mind. “We want to get you back home and feeling better,” Given said. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

advertising and the $20,000 to $30,000 they need for obstacles. “There are some sponsors out there and next year we will need less cash,” he said. “We will already have the obstacles and we will have videos and pictures to help us with advertising. People like to stay around at the end to watch and take pictures that they usually post on Facebook.” Cushman explained that participants also usually like to sit down and have a beer after finishing the course. “I’d like to have a beer wagon,” he said. “This could be a huge money maker.” Cushman wrapped up his presentation with reminding the group that the Indian Mud Run organizers don’t want anything to do with the money raised from the event. “We just want to generate the money and let you do what you want with it,” he said. “If we do this right it will grow. We have a beautiful place and no one can match what we have here.” They also will hopefully get more people involved in taking care of the parks. “There are a lot of young people on this committee that have the same enthusiasm and commitment to this project that people did when the Playvilion was built,” said Tom Edwards, Coshocton City Councilman. Since its levy failed, park officials have been focusing on surviving and stressing the need for volunteers. “Our wish list is short because our focus has been on trying to keep the park running from day to day,” Everhart said. “We also need someone to donate their time to serve as a volunteer coordinator because volunteers are going to become more and more important because our finances are so low.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
Upcoming Events
The Friends of the Parks know money is tight for the park district after its levy failed in 2011 so they are throwing their support to an adventures event that has the potential to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars to the park district and the area. Hubie Cushman presented the idea for the Indian Mud Run to the Friends of the Park during their Feb. 6 meeting. “We are going to take the best of the Warrior Dash and Tough Mudder and put them together for our own event,” said Cushman, who is cocoordinator of the Indian Mud Run. “I ran a Warrior Dash in Logan and had so much fun that I wanted to do the one in Carrolton, but it was sold out.” The events are basically obstacle courses that include everything from water slides to cargo net climbs. Two Warrior Dashes were held in Ohio in 2011 in Logan and Carrollton. “These courses were not near as nice as what is available here,” Cushman said. “We have the potential to make this work and have it be great.” He explained to the Friends of the Parks that participants paid an average of $60 to compete and a total of 30,623 people finished the events. The Indian Mud Run organizers plan to only charge $40-$45 to compete and believe they can draw anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 people. Two thousand racers would bring in $80,000-$90,000 in entry fees and 5,000 racers would bring in $200,000 to $225,000. “I guarantee people are going to come do this and they are going to have a blast,” Cushman said. The Indian Mud Run will be held July 14 and center around an Indian theme. “People dress up crazy for these and we are hoping they will go with the theme,” Cushman said. Participants will be given a T-shirt and medal shaped like an arrowhead after working their way through at least 20 obstacles that also will focus on the Indian theme. “We want to keep them as natural as we can,” Cushman said. “There will be logs to jump over, mud pits and I want to do a plastic tube people have to crawl through but put rocks around it so it looks like you are going into a cave.” The 5K race will utilize Lake Park’s nature trails, but obstacles will not be on the trails. “They will all be off of it,” said Lori Everhart, park district director. “The last time the park board met we gave our full support to the project as long as our insurance was sufficient, the trails were left in as good or better condition than when they started and the canal was not damaged in anyway.” Cushman said the biggest challenge for his group right now is a lack of photos to use for

Bates and Bond also hope the students pick up some good habits. “The earlier you start healthy habits the easier they are to stick with when you become an adult,” Bond said. Bates and Bond also encourage the students to share what they learn at Running Club with their families. “We try to encourage them to get up during commercial breaks of shows and do the stretching and yoga we show them and get their parents involved,” Bates said. “The elementary school had a 5K race last year and we’d like to get more families involved this year.” The school’s race is set for Saturday, April 28. First grader Jeremy Tidwell thinks he is pretty fast and enjoys getting to work on his skills when the Ridgewood Elementary Running Club meets. “We get to run and we get to pass people,” Tidwell said. “I love that.” The Running Club, for first through third graders, was started in October by second grade teacher Sonda Bates and school nurse Barb Bond. “We both love running and are concerned with the well being of our students,” Bates said. The Running Club meets on Wednesdays and starts out with some warm up exercises and a little bit of yoga. “You have to get yourself warmed up and get your heart rate going,” Bates said to the students. Snow and cold weather kept the students inside at their last meeting so they divided into groups and took turns running the school hallways and laps around the gym. Bates and Bond also added in some walking, skipping and marching. “We switch things up so the students don’t get bored,” Bond said. The Running Club meets from about 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. and ends its gatherings with cool down exercises. “I like it,” said Aden Troyer, who is in first grade. “It’s kind of fun and I get to spend time with my friends.”

Hidden Treasures: Conesville covered bridge had a history of fires
FIRE These photos are of a bridge in Conesville that was originally built in 1853 and burned down at least twice. The photos were submitted by Ed Stoecker and information about the bridge can be found in the book, “The Covered Bridges of Coshocton County, Ohio: A History” by Terry E. Miller. “These photos came from the man who owned United Photo on Main Street,” he said. “I was taking film to them to have developed and he had these two slides shown in there. I liked them and asked if I could have a copy.” The bridge was built on County Road 273 in 1853, next to Cone’s Distillery, which made whiskey. According to the book, “The Covered Bridges of Coshocton County, Ohio: A History” by Terry E. Miller, the bridge and the distillery burned down in 1857. The bridge was rebuilt in 1859 and caught on fire once again in 1865.
