Girl Scout Cookies, that is. Bundled in hats, coats, and mittens, members of Daisy Troop 60388, Brownie Troop 60455 and Junior Girl Scout Troop 60352 braved the chilly Saturday morning temperatures on the last day of February to hawk some cookies
from 10 am to 2 pm in front of Bakers IGA in the Downtowner Plaza. Complete with a poster that tracked their sales by type of cookie, the girls were selling Thin Mints, Tagalongs (that is the Peanut Butter Patty cookie!), Shortbreads, and even a new
cookie called “Duke de Leche”, which is a caramel cookie. With the price remaining at $3.00 per box, the same price as last year, the girls explained that the economy has not affected this year’s sales. The girls reported that they have sold just as many boxes
of cookies as last year. Jennifer Minton, Troop Leader, stated that “the girls are doing a good job. They’re braving the cold and no one has complained”. The girls meet at the Warsaw United Methodist Church.

will follow suit and start warming up like the weather! We can only hope so as the news of unemployment in our community hovering near 13% is not good news. But still, that means a lot more folks are working than not, we just need to continue focusing on the positive and remain optimistic. Yes, it is possible that things will get a bit worse before we seen signs of the stimulus package starting to boost the economy. Now, if we could only get Manny to plunk some of that hard earned $45 million for his two year deal towards the federal deficit! On the home front, the Business Growth Alliance of Coshocton County is working hard to help provide some fun and the opportunity to win the Pot ‘O Gold gift basket worth over $500 in merchandise and gift certificates. These area businesses are the same businesses that support our kids little league teams, scouting, 4-H, the junior fair livestock auction and dozens of other area events and organizations. They could use your help to make this promotion a success! All you need to do is show up at the various stores and register for their door prize – which also registers you for the Pot ‘O Gold grand prize – and shop their store for some great deals. You

can find out more in this issue of The Beacon by turning to pages 10 and 11. There is also a story providing more detail, written by Jan Myers in this edition. We were saddened to hear of the passing of long-time Warsaw businessman and auto dealer, Mr. Jack Lewis, last week. Those that were lucky enough to know Jack knew him as a straightforward and honest man with a great sense of humor and a level of integrity that was second to none. This is certainly proven by the simple fact that Jack Lewis Auto Sales has stood the test of time in our community. Jack, this community will miss you. Congratulations deserve to go out to the area swimmers and wrestlers that have fared well in their respective areas of competition. Particularly, Brett Mellor from River View, who finished third in the state in wrestling. Mellor, an All-Ohio senior at River View, compiled a record of 180 career wins during his tenure. Anyone involved with youth winter sports, whether it is cheerleading, the pep band, players, or fans, know that it was a difficult winter with cancellations, delays and over all cold weather. As you think about the parents, grandparents, aunts uncles, brothers and sisters that often times
travelled long distances to watch their favorite participant, be sure to say “thank you” to all those that make the games and participation possible. Maybe that is the athletic director, a coach, parent, food stand volunteer or whomever, just be sure to show them your appreciation for a job well done. (I think next year we will be unveiling our “top concession stand food rankings” at area high schools column!) Just kidding. You deserve a quick update on The Beacon. We are currently printing and distributing 10,500 copies of The Beacon twice each month throughout Coshocton County with a smattering of copies to Holmes County and Newcomerstown. I would estimate that we pick up about 30 to 40 copies left over at various stores and businesses (I do this myself right now so I pretty much know!), with probably around two dozen copies used by various people in the community to line bird cages, hamster cages, wrap fish, etc. Other than that, I would imagine the rest are pretty well thumbed through. At least, that is what our readers tell us. Hey, Coshocton, just remember that we love ‘ya for reading The Beacon! Tell those advertisers.

We wanted to bring members of the community together (this morning) and show what we do here. It’s also about partnerships and working together. This community really embraces our organization. Holly Rine, director of children’s programs explained that
Tired of coping with
the breakfast was to provide awareness of the programs offered and also as a thank you to the community. “The community does a lot for us, Rine stated, “and the entire community is part of what we do. This is a chance to take a pause and talk to those that help us. Debra Croft was given a hearty round of applause for her efforts in coordinating the breakfast. Julieann Spalding, mother of three

Coshocton Hospital Serves Dinner at New Life Ministries Members of the Coshocton Hospital dietary team volunteered to prepare and help serve a meal at New Life Ministries, located on Seventh Street in Coshocton. Greg Nowak, Hospital Administrator and CEO explained. “We’re trying to give back to the community. These are trying times today and the end of the month seems to be a challenge. We know there’s a need and we just wanted to help. (At the hospital), we’re seeing more things that are a concern to us. We selected this particular church because of their food drives and the fact that they already have a process in place. We expect to serve 200 to 250 meals”. Pastor Mark Granger said, “We greatly appreciate it
and we’re glad they had confidence in us to host this. The food’s great and we’re just glad to serve the
community. The hospital staff and our volunteers all worked hard to provide this evening’s meal”.

Based on the crowd’s response, those in attendance at the breakfast would agree that the omelets – made this year by Van Horn’s husband Jim with assistance from Bob Domer - were a great idea. Bill Ogle stated that, “the breakfast was very good – the omelet with sour cream was delicious!” When asked about the impact of the Relay for Life, Ogle responded that, “I think we’re more aware of cancer now and the amount of research being done more than ever before through the efforts of Relay. Mayor Mercer Recognizes March as Red Cross Month Mayor Steve Mercer today signed a proclamation recognizing March as American Red Cross Month in Coshocton, a tradition dating back to 1943, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, signed the first such proclamation. This year the Red Cross is taking time in March to focus on the volunteers and employees who demonstrate such compassion and generosity by supporting the Red Cross in Coshocton County and around the country. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Steve Mercer, Mayor of the city of Coshocton by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of Coshocton do hereby proclaim March 2009
as American Red Cross Month. Especially during this extraordinary time for our country, I encourage all Americans to support this organization’s noble humanitarian mission. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the City of Coshocton, Ohio. “The Red Cross wants to thank Mayor Mercer for supporting us, and for issuing this proclamation in honor of March as Red Cross Month,” said Jen Fannin, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Coshocton County. “We are proud to be the place where everyday people can
do extraordinary things, and we hope our entire community will continue to support us so that we can continue to offer lifesaving services everyday.” Every day, Red Cross volunteers and employees provide essential services in this community to help those affected by everything from house or apartment fires, flooding, and other natural and human caused disasters, thanks to the generous support of the people in Coshocton County. For more than 90 years, Coshoctonians have relied on the Red Cross to provide disaster relief, water safety and first aid/CPR/AED training. Over the past year, nearly two thousand people
have enrolled in American Red Cross Health and Safety Courses in Coshocton. The Coshocton Chapter has sent 77 emergency messages to active duty personnel and their families. Our chapter also reaches out to the members of the National Guard and Reserves and their families who reside in nearly every community in Coshocton. The American Red Cross of Coshocton County also serves as the bridge between more than 3000 generous blood donors and millions of patients in need each year. playing the part of Dr. Maro Johnson for visitors touring the village. Now that he has accepted a part-time position as village historian, he won’t have as much opportunity to play the doctor’s role, but intends to step into character a couple times a month. “I enjoy it too

brick-laying. Wilma expresses that her favorite project as Roscoe Village historian was the re-creation of Dr. Maro Johnson’s office. Wilma endeavored to credibly restore an 1840s doctor’s office on a tight budget. Appropriate instruments, medicines and décor were needed to accurately replicate the space. With diligent searching and the generosity of Dr. Robert Secrest of Coshocton, Wilma managed to bring the office back to an authentic reproduction of what it once was, replete with museum quality items. Dr. Secrest aided her in the identification of different pharmaceutical methods used to make medicines during the mid-1800s, and kindly offered her several genuine period medical books to display. “It took a year to complete,” she says with a pleased nod. Now, after years of

Wilma was a shoo-in with 30 years of experience in local research under her belt. “I jumped in right away,” Wilma pronounces. Hundreds of books line the shelves in her office, many of which she has read and still refers to regularly. The collection boasts scads of interesting volumes, including several out-ofprint titles. “I gave myself an education and read every book about Roscoe and that era I could get my hands on, from canal boats to costumes.” That dedication to research served her well during her first undertaking, which was redoing the hillside in the heart of the village. The display included a brick kiln, pit saw, water wheel and a foot-turned lathe. “I loved seeing hard work come to life,” Wilma recollects. She had even carried her research efforts as far as Williamsburg, Virginia to study period

town’s past and present significant events and way Rivers Fireof life. Friday, February will hold a27th, 2009 commemorates h 14, 2009 yet another noteworthy enCommunity try – Wilma’s retirement. Possessing an inherent love of history and genealogy, Wilma enjoyed researching her family’s past even at twelve years old. “Well, I was nosy and wanted to know about everything,” she cheerfully recalls. And she discovered a lot. Her mother’s family, the Tiltons, were among the first families to settle in Coshocton County, and the Springs, her father’s family, were some of the first to make their homes in Muskingum County.
So how very apt that she would eventually marry Paul Hunt, a man with deep historical roots in our county. Paul’s great-grandfather penned the 1876 book “Hunt’s History”, which recorded Coshocton’s history from 1764 to 1876. The Hunt family itself has been traced back to the Revolutionary War. Over the years, on any business trip her husband would take, Wilma tagged along. You’d never find her lounging by the pool or shopping – she was interested in the cities’ libraries and courthouses. “I wanted to know all about this town I was in,” Wilma said. “The library was the first thing I looked for.” In the mid-60s Wilma began doing local research for other families as a paid profession, rather than a mere hobby. When Miss Ruth Norton’s position as Roscoe Village’s historian became available in 1993,

Free Masons Open their Doors On March 21st, all 518 Masonic Lodges will open their doors for a public open house. Locally, Coshocton Lodge #96, Wakatomica Lodge #108, and Warsaw Lodge #255 will share in welcoming the public to the open house at the Coshocton Lodge, located at 4th and Main Street from 4:00 to 6:00. There will be other Masonic affiliated organizations also represented to share information and answer questions. Anyone who would like to know more about Freemasonry or is just curious and would like a peek inside may attend. Members and their families are also invited to come share the day. Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest men’s fraternity in the world. Thirteen signers of the Constitution and fourteen Presidents of the United States, including George Washington, were Freemasons. Today, there are more than 2 million Freema-
sons in North America alone, 110,000 of which are Ohio Freemasons. The origins of Freemasonry are rooted in the guilds of stonemasons, who built the castles and cathedrals during the middle ages. The tools and objects used by stonemasons have been adapted as symbols in the ceremonies of modern Freemasonry to teach moral lessons; known worldwide as a symbol of character, charity and friendship, the Square and Compasses design is the emblem of every Masonic lodge. Today, Freemasonry is a fraternity that brings together good men from various political, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds to work to improve themselves and their communities in the spirit of brotherly love, relief and truth. Please plan to attend the open house at the Coshocton Lodge on March 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 or visit www.freemason.com.

"The Alliance really wanted to have an event that would include Roscoe Village businesses, the Downtowner Plaza stores, Coshocton Main Street businesses and other stores in the outlying areas," explained Wilson. "We are so pleased to have the 23 stores participating and also the support of the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce." The Lucky Leprechaun Days participating businesses include Canal Cargo, Liberty Lady, The Party Package Too, Roscoe General Store, Krasco Baskets, Susan's Footwear, Sprint Print Marketing Media, Fortune's Boot Shop, Vacshak, Front Porch Store, Pampered Chef, Marilyn's Natural Foods, Andrea's Fashions, Baby of Mine, Sue's Hallmark, Linnet's Flowers, Good News Bookstore, Candy Bouquet, America's Harvest Bulk Foods, Carton's Shoes, Josie's Things, Roma's Gifts & Florist and Wilson's Carpet & Furniture. "Each of the businesses will have their own door prize drawings," said Wil-
son. "You can sign up at every store for a chance to win that store's door prize. Signing up at each store also enters you in the 'Pot of Gold' Grand Prize drawing which will include prizes from all 23 businesses. All the names from each store will be emptied into a big basket after March 17 and then on the 18th I'll go to WTNS and draw the winning name. So the more businesses you visit, the better your chance of winning this grand prize." Wilson says the Business Growth Alliance is excited about this event, which will be a perfect way to welcome spring weather. "We hope shoppers will take advantage of the specials and deals at each of these businesses as well as signing up for the door prizes," she said. "This will be a fun activity for Coshocton and we'd like to encourage as many people as possible to visit these local stores." For more information about Lucky Leprechaun Days or the Business Growth Alliance, contact Wilson at (740) 622-6237.

Friday the 13th just may be your lucky day, since this Friday begins the Lucky Leprechaun Days at many area retail businesses. From March 13 through 17, twenty-three stores will be offering special discounts, deals and drawings for door prizes. Trish Wilson, from Wilson's Carpet and Furniture, says the event is coordinated through the newly formed Business Growth Alliance of Coshocton County. "The alliance started about a year ago," said Wilson. "I am a member of the Coshocton Community Development Council, and the idea for this business alliance grew out of that." Wilson says the goal of the Business Growth Alliance is to promote the awareness, growth, value and retention of local businesses. The group typically meets every other month and there are no dues or fees to belong to the alliance. "We would like to include businesses throughout the county," added Wilson. "If any business would like to have more information they can contact me at the store."
COMING SOON! Lucky Leprechaun Days!
The Lucky Leprechaun Sale will start Friday, March 13th and run until March 17th. (Not all participating businesses are open on Sunday.) Each business will have individual door prizes. At the close of business on March 17th, all of the names from each store will be put into one big “Pot of Gold” drawing. One lucky person will win this grand prize which will have something donated from each store. Visit the Chamber of Commerce at 401 Main Street to see the “Pot o’ Gold” prizes!

Coshocton County HeadStart has earned their third star, which is the highest rating that can be received. This is only the second third star in a ten county area, and as Steve Troendly, Executive Director, stated, “We’re very proud of this award and it is a great honor. We’re pleased with all the hard work that our teachers and staff invest in serving our kids and their families to earn this prestigious award”. Carla Aronhalt, who is responsible for education at the facility, added, “It’s a huge honor to know that our teachers have

the commitment to get this third star. This is especially great for our staff”. Aronhalt continued, “We’re doing what we need to do to prepare our kids to move into the K-12 programs”. HeadStart Board of Directors President Ken Smailes, said, “Things are always changing in this arena. We respect the commitment of the staff here and even the families. The families may change but we see the new ones get involved. We are making a difference and the commitment of the leadership and staff at this facility speaks for itself”.

Amid a sea of green basketball jerseys and cheerleading uniforms, players, cheerleaders, coaches and parents recently gathered at the Coshocton Christian Tabernacle to celebrate the end of the Upwards Basketball season. Utilizing a program that is faith based and where every child plays, Upwards Basketball is a program geared to build kids self-esteem and also provide education and a foundation in the Bible. Pastor Dan Keaton explained that, “Every kid gets to play – every kid is important”. Nikki Markel, said, “This is the
first time I’ve ever coached basketball. It was amazing to see the kid’s progress and just having fun. They learned the fundamentals and also learned about God and having a relationship with Jesus. This is teaching them how to become followers of Jesus”. Casey Claxon, who learned about the program at Perry Chapel said, “We support the program – especially because the gospel is part of the program – and it’s important to have that as a part. Upwards Basketball is very structured and very organized. The coaches did an
outstanding job, especially for the first year. It was a very positive experience for our son”. Steve Mason, who coordinated the program, said, “This gives the kids something to do, get away from the TV and be introduced to Jesus. These kids are learning the fundamentals of basketball – learning how to be a team player and making friends. For me this was a very rewarding experience, just awesome!” Each player was introduced to the hearty applause of the crowd and the roaring of the team’s cheerleaders. Cheerleaders were also individually introduced and each child was presented with a handshake or high five and a certificate. Judged by their peers, Jim and Brenda McCoy were awarded with the K-2 coach of the year award while Mike and Mindy Kohman were presented with the 3-6 coach of the year honor. Thad Coffman wrapped up the evening’s activities with a lively talk using PowerPoint and telling the kids that, “Listening and obeying is important when learning to follow God. Drawing upon experiences from his own life, Coffman
told the kids using LeBron James’ pre-game practice of throwing talc high in the air, that, “Nothing is too big for God”.

The River View Speech & Debate team, under the advisement of Mr. Dave Kridler, held a special evening for parents, school officials and invited legislators on Friday evening, February 27th in the high school library. Being the only debate team in a five county area presents special challenges, says Kridler. The team competes in the Canton district, two to three times a month from October to March. The debates are called “Public Forum Debates”, and the topic for the month is selected by the National organization – and the students need to learn all sides of the debate because they do not know if they will be “pro” or “con” on the topic. Kridler explained that, “It gets them (the students) comfortable in public speaking – and helps them rationalize an issue without just jumping in – this helps the kids learn to research and recognize all sides of an issue. Jeannie Eaton, the mother of Jordan Eaton, said of her and father Scott’s son, “This has given him a lot of confidence. It’s been really good for him”. Special guests in attendance for the evening were former State Senator Joy Padgett and current State Representative (94th District) Troy Balderson. Kridler stated that their attendance “honors the work that the kids have done”. Jill Fry stated that the debate team shows, “the ability for kids to think on their feet and to recognize how important that skill is”. Kridler told the audience in attendance that, “some very good commu-

nicators have come out of a program like this. The kids work hard and we have beaten some good teams like Upper Arlington and Mason. Our goal for next year is to qualify for state. I’m just very proud of them”. Caleb Chapman, a member of the debate team, said, “speaking and thinking on your feet is something that can help you throughout life”. Lexi Davis told the audience that, “this program has helped me discover what kind of person I am and it will benefit my aspirations to become a medical doctor”. Jordan Eaton said that being a member of the team will, “help me with future plans to become a lawyer – and debate much better in the courtroom”. Nathan Shutt, a freshman member of the team who plans to major in meteorology, said that, “I love this . . . speech and debate. I’m very glad we have this program at RVHS.

A demonstration debate on the “No Child Left Behind Act” was held for the audience, with two of the team members taking the “pro” viewpoint and two holding the “con” stance. A lively debate ensued for about 20 minutes, with several in the audience thinking it was the high school version of Hannity & Combs! Advisor Mr. Dave Kridler concluded the evening by stating, “I would like this to be a tradition at River View. We need to find some mechanism for funding”. Local attorney Mr. Mike McCullough said that he “came to see how kids are doing these days – and my faith in the youth of America has been restored”. Family members, guests and the debate team were treated to refreshments served by the parents of the team following the debate.
