Coshocton Schools taking preschool applications CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The Coshocton City School District will receive applications for preschool children for the 20122013 school year Monday, April 9 through Friday, April 20. Children who are eligible for the Early Childhood Education preschool classrooms must be 3-years-old on or before Aug. 1 of this year, toilet trained, reside in the school district and meet income eligibility guidelines. The total family income cannot exceed Federal Poverty Guidelines at 200 percent or less of the poverty level. All information will need to be completed before the child is considered for enrollment. The parents will need to provide a birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization record, custody papers if applicable and proof of family income. Emmanuel Lutheran Church will have a Christian Seder Meal open to the Coshocton Community on Maundy Thursday, April 5 starting at 6 p.m. This ceremony and meal will uniquely combine the elements of the traditional Jewish Seder and the Christian celebration of Christ’s Passion. The Seder Meal has been celebrated by Jewish families since Old Testament times to commemorate Passover, the Children of Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian subjugation as told in the Old Testament Book of Exodus, Chapter 12 and the Torah. Maundy Thursday is a Christian celebration commemorating the institution of Holy Communion by Jesus of Nazareth at a Passover meal the day before he was crucified on what is now celebrated as Good Friday. Since about the 10th Century AD, the Seder meal has been formalized by a Jewish text called Haggadah, and many books and pamphlets have been published over the ensuing centuries giving guidance on ways to celebrate the Seder

Hunting and Wildlife Classes rescheduled CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

Hunting & Wildlife classes for 4-H members have been rescheduled for four Saturdays from 12:30 - 2 p.m., in April and May. Classes will be Saturday, April 14 and 28, and May 12 and 26. The first class will meet at the Coshocton Gun Club on SR 83 South. Youth must be at least 9 and in the third grade through age 18. Cost is $18 per youth and includes a project book and compass. A minimum of four youth are needed for the classes to start. Activities teach youth skills needed to navigate in the woods, observe and recognize plants and animals, understand animal habits, understand hunting regulations and ethical behavior in natural settings. This class is useful for youth wishing to hunt with a camera or a firearm. Instructor Dean Freund is both state and nationally certified in the 4-H hunting curriculum, teaching since 2004. He taught Outdoor Education for Worthington Schools for 30 years before becoming a 4-H volunteer. can register for classes through the local OSU Extension Office. All classes are taught by 4-H certified shooting sports instructors. Call the OSU Extension Coshocton County Office at 622-2265 to register or stop in at 724 S. Seventh St. Muzzleloading classes start April 2 and run eight Mondays from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Classes are taught at the Coshocton Gun Club on SR 83 South. Youth must be at least 12 years old, physically capable of safely handling the muzzleloader, and have previously completed a 4-H shooting class in rifle, pistol, or shotgun. Cost of the muzzleloading classes is $25 per youth and includes a 4-H muzzleloading project book and ammunition. Muzzleloaders are provided for use during class. Youth are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses or may borrow safety glasses from 4-H for use during classes. Class size is limited. Instructor Tom Allman has been working with 4-H youth in rifle, pistol and muzzleloading classes since 1999. Instructor Dean Freund is state and nationally trained in 4-H muzzleloading with 13 years’ experience with 4-H. For questions and registration, contact the extension office at 622-2265.

There are about 45 4-H Clubs in Coshocton County and Jenny Cherry, OSU Extension educator, 4-H Youth Development, was excited to see more children signing up for them and adults wanting to volunteer their time.

Olivia Griffith learned about first aid and Liz Kittner got a history lesson all from the same organization - 4-H. Griffith and Kittner were representing their clubs and helping to spread the word about them at Focus on 4-H Day, which was held March 24, at the Coshocton County Career Center. “I love it (4-H) because there are so many different projects,” said Griffith, who is a member of the This-N-That 4-H Club. She did a scrapbooking project two years ago and did a first aid project last year. “I got first at the county fair and placed at the state fair too,” Griffith said. “I learned how to do a number of things including the importance of stretching and eating right.” Kittner, her sister Sarah, and Nathan Arnold were at Focus on 4-H Day to share about the living history group. “We meet about once a month to talk about our projects and have historical discussions,” Liz said. “It’s fun to share something you love with others who also love it.” Doing living history projects taught Liz how to do proper research. “You have to know all the pieces of your person’s life,” she said. “You have to know what they eat, what they did and about their social class.” Sarah said you also have to find a costume to represent the person you pick to research and then give a presentation to judges during the fair. “I’m kind of shy so it’s helped me learn to talk more,” she said. There also is some creativity that comes along with living history projects. “I’m interested in history, but I also like art and to act so this puts all that together,” Arnold said. “You have to become the character.” Liz and Sarah agreed with Arnold. “You have to think like them and feel like them,” Liz said. Sarah said the goal is to take people back to the time period of your character. “You have to act like you just stepped out of time,” she said. shotgun and safety glasses. 2012 is the 18th year that lead shotgun instructor Vearl Specht has taught 4-H youth. Instructor Randy Hutchison has been working with shotgun classes for seven years. Both Specht and Hutchison completed advanced 4-H shotgun training in 2006. The local 4-H Shooting Sports program is seeking adults who wish to teach various shooting sports to local youth. A weekend training session will be Friday through Sunday, May 4 - 6, in Jackson, to certify volunteers wanting to work with the local program. For details about adult training, contact the OSU Extension Office at 622-2265. Deadline to register for the May training workshop is Wednesday, April 4. I GOT YOU BABE The Janusian Club promised a night of good food, great entertainment, and fun times with friends, and they certainly delivered on Thursday, March 22 during their annual Ladies Night Out. Over 300 women attended the event in the Ridgewood Junior High auditorium. Four types of sandwiches, barbequed pork, creamed chicken, beef, and meatball, were catered by Wendy Schumaker of Schumaker Farms, and a wide variety of fruits, salads, vegetables, and desserts were served up buffet style for everyone to enjoy. Door prizes were given away and various items were raffled off. Then, the Janusian Club presented their annual style show. Pictured here are Angie Pyle and Jon Cotterman as Sonny and Cher singing ‘I Got You Babe’. To All of Sue’s Hallmark Friends and Family… We are so proud to announce the opening of Dee’s Gifts and Florist Shop and very sad to say that Sue’s Hallmark and Florist will be coming to an end. It is with great pride that I can truly say that Mom was already talking to Dee about buying the shop and that this was her wish as Mom was ready to retire. In a lot of ways Mom had “hand-picked” Dee herself to take over the store. The greatest gift I’ve been given since Mom passed was to return home and spend every week in the store listening to the stories about this wonderful and generous woman, that this town will miss for many years to come. I have truly been blessed to be able to call her “Mom” and will cherish that gift. It is my hope that we all embrace Dee and welcome her to Main Street. She is so excited to be a part of this community. So, just pop in and say “Hello”, she will be so excited to meet all of you. When I came home and took over the endeavor of running the shop, I had no clue what I was doing and so many people have been so generous with their time and words of kindness. Jones also is excited to have her own store in Coshocton. “I love Coshocton,” she said. “I’ve been coming down here all my life.” Jones enjoys working with dried and silk flowers and will offer those types of arrangements and wreaths and other decorations for the home. She however, will not carry Hallmark items because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars Hallmark requires a person to have in assets to carry their items. “It’s almost impossible for a private person to now own a Hallmark store,” Zimmer said. “She has enough items that mom purchased to probably get her through a year’s worth of holidays, but after that it will eventually dissipate.” Jones plans to carry another line of cards and hopefully Christmas ornaments. “I’ve learned that you have to offer a variety of things in order to keep going,” she said. “I’m so excited and I’ve received so much good feedback. This is something I’ve wanted to do all my life.” Zimmer was very happy she was able to spend some time in her Mom’s shop before selling it. “There is nothing like a small town,” she said. “Every single day I felt the warmth that you can’t get anywhere else.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Last week Pam Zimmer finished a deal started by her late mother Sue Border and made sure the shop she ran for almost 30 years was left in good hands. On March 21, Zimmer turned Sue’s Hallmark and Florist over to Dee Jones of Millersburg who will rename the store Dee’s Gift and Florist Shop. “It wasn’t a hard decision,” Zimmer said. “Mom had already decided she wanted to do this. She talked to Dee a couple of months before she passed so I felt like Mom had her hands in this and it felt ok for me to do.” Several people wanted Zimmer to continue to run the store herself, but she knew her mother was ready to retire before she passed away and was preparing to move on from the store. “I did get so much comfort from being there,” Zimmer said. “I had all these people come into the store and tell me things I never would have known she did. She was so generous and giving. It makes me proud.” She particularly recalled one women coming into the store and sharing with her that when she was going through a tough financial time, Border would let her children play with books and toys that were taken out of the package. “She’d put them on the floor and sometimes let them play for three or four hours and them pick them up and pack them up like they’d never been touched,” Zimmer said. “Everyday someone would come and tell me a story like that. Working in the store after her death was one of the most amazing times of my life.” Border’s former customers will still find a friendly and caring person at the store. “Dee is really sweet,” Zimmer said. “People can learn the business, how to do payroll and run a cash register, but they can’t learn people skills. Dee really likes people and I’m so excited for her.”

March 30th, 1952 The first orchard owner in Coshocton County had just purchased the latest in farming technology. Mr. Everett Van Winkle of New Guilford was the proud owner of the Buffalo Turbine machine, the new type of turbulent air sprayer-duster. Although he had not yet put it to use, Mr. Van Winkle estimated that he would be able to go over his 35 acre orchard by spraying or dusting in about one-half days’ time. With his old equipment, it took him two days. The new machine also permitted a one-man operation where his old equipment required two. Mr. Van Winkle said it was just the machine he needed to move forward with his apple orchard.

March 29th, 1962 A part of Coshocton history was coming down forever. The south dock of the old Pennsylvania railroad station was being dismantled to make room for a parking lot for Shaw-Barton employees. Shaw-Barton purchased the freight station in 1961 for warehousing raw materials. Workers removed a part of the building’s interior as well as repairing it. The dock along the west side of the former freight station was repaired and a concrete ramp was added. Land for the original station was acquired by the Steubenville and Indiana railroad in 1863. The south dock dated back to 1891.

March 29th, 1972 The Roscoe Village Society had recently approved a campaign to raise funds for the restoration of the Jackson Township Hall. It was to be repaired, refinished, and restored. The exterior had been sandblasted and the large garage doors that were used while the building was a firehouse were removed. A bell tower was reconstructed and the original bell was hung inside. The building was to be used as a meeting place and to have elections when completed. It would also be an information center for guests to Roscoe Village and would house antique displays, brochures and have costumed hostesses.

BY JOSIE McCORMICK When you meet Stephanie Sheehan Hammons you instantly like her. “She has a huge heart,” said Tracy Freetage, who is her neighbor. Sheehan also unfortunately has a rare terminal disease called Systemic Sclerosis, which also is known as Scleroderma. The 37-year-old mother of three was diagnosed with Scleroderma in June 2011 and the disease has now attacked 75 percent of her vital organs. There are only four specialists in the country who know about the disease and Sheehan was supposed to see one in Chicago, Ill., but her condition deteriorated too quickly. “She’s been poked and prodded to death and they didn’t think the treatment was going to work,” said Rich Hammons, her fiancé. “She can’t even walk now. The doctors have never seen it evolve this fast.” Freetage and her husband Mike are planning a benefit dodge ball tournament to help Hammons

March 28th, 1982 The Coshocton Lumber Company was planning for their third annual Home Show to be May 1. Over 200 local businesses had been invited and over 5,000 people were expected to visit the many booths that offered everything from doors, windows, paint, and appliances to pianos, make-up, and hairstyles. Thirty-five vendors had already reserved spots for the show and Chris Werley, vice president of Coshocton Lumber, was advising more businesses to participate. He said it was a great way for businesses to reach potential customers. A 12-foot aluminum Starcraft fishing boat and trailer was to be given away at the show. Joseph A. Yacapraro Sr. age 78, of West Lafayette passed away at Autumn Extended Care on Saturday March 24, 2012. He was born August 10, 1933 in Wooster, Ohio a son of the late Frank Joseph and Teresa Marie Tomassetti Yacapraro. Joseph graduated from Apple Creek High School in Wayne County. He served and protected his nation in the US Army, where he was an Army Instructor in Radio Communications. He eventually ended his career after 20 plus years of service as an Army Recruiter. He was electrician by trade and a farmer. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Coshocton, Ohio. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son David Brian Yacapraro; Brother Frank Joseph Yacapraro Jr.; Sister Rose Gilbert and Son-In-Law Orville Starkey. He is survived by his Wife Bessie Mildred Sigler Yacapraro of the home,

Thomas Jones is facial hair free for the first time since 1970 thanks to the efforts of students from Sacred Heart School. Students were challenged to raise $500 for new playground equipment during Play Around with Reading. Each student asked friends and family to pledge so much per half an hour of reading with a five hour maximum. The school’s parent teacher organization then matched the

students funds for a total of $1,000 raised. Their success was celebrated March 19, by watching Jones get his beard shaved off. “I am running for office and was told I should get rid of my beard,” he said. “I thought someone should benefit out of the whole thing. I’m a special education teacher and my assignment is here. I don’t have any students at this time, but I still wanted to help raise money and get kids reading more.” Jones had been growing his beard for the last five or six years and has at least had a mustache since 1970. Anisha Seitz and Paige Hamilton, both seniors in the cosmetology program at the Coshocton County Career Center, had the honor of shaving Jones. “I’ve been a substitute at the Career Center and when I asked for volunteers they said yes,” Jones said. Seitz agreed to be part of the celebration because it was for a good cause. “I’m excited but kind of nervous too,” she said. “It makes you nervous because he’s a teacher. If we mess up he could be mean to us.” Hamilton, however, knew they were going to do just fine. “We aren’t going to mess up,” she said. “I’m good at cutting beards.”

Seitz and Hamilton skillfully shaved Jones while the students watched. “It was fun,” said Joshua Woolard, who is in kindergarten at Sacred Heart. He also enjoyed the challenge Jones gave the students. “I like to learn how to read,” Woolard said. “If we can’t read we figure the page out.” Two ways the students do that is by sounding words out and looking at the pictures on the pages. Payton Tubbs and Jaden Everhart also enjoyed reading for the fundraiser and had their own ideas for additions to the school’s playground. “I want a teeter-totter,” Tubbs said. Everhart was pulling for swings and Woolard was hoping that they also could get a tire swing. Mary Stenner, principal at Sacred Heart said school officials have discussed getting a tetherball, swings and the four square and hopscotch areas repainted. “Every time we have a project they just go gung ho,” she said. “They are just really good about raising money and are a carrying group.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Darci Wilson and Katie Spaulding walked the runway Wednesday afternoon at Windsorwood Place. “I thought it was fun,” Wilson said. “I like making the residents smile.” She and Spaulding are both seniors at the Coshocton County Career Center and volunteer at Windsorwood. “Today was entertaining,” Spaulding said. “I get a good feeling volunteering.” The fashion show was one of several activities held March 21 to honor Celebration of Women Month at Windsorwood. Students from the career center’s cosmetology program came to do facials and work on the residents’ hair and nails, Mary Kay did makeup and Kreuter Massotherapy gave massages in the morning. “I got a facial and a massage,” said Rilla Tumblin, a Windsorwood resident. “I enjoyed both.” In the afternoon the residents enjoyed the fashion show and a presentation by Martha Almack who owns C & M Collectibles with her husband Charles. “This was an experience,” Martha said.

Junior Woman’s Club celebrates 100 years BY BETH SCOTT The Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a celebration dinner April 11 at 6 p.m. at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum. “We think that the setting of the museum is particularly important since we are 100 years old,” said Carol Freund, member of the Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club, “and the museum has some costumes or dress of earlier eras, and so helping to create the scene will be mannequins appropriately attired in earlier garb.” Invitations have gone out to the more than 90 members of the club for the celebratory dinner, which includes a three-course meal and a cake provided by the students at the Coshocton County Career Center under the direction of Mike Cichon. Guest speaker will be Cathy Horyn, New York Times fashion critic and graduate of Coshocton High School.

The Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club was founded in March 1912 by 10 women. One of the founding women was Mrs. H.B. Hunt, whose husband had written a book about the history of Coshocton. The club’s purpose was to research and present papers on various topics. Two papers would be presented during each club meeting and one member of the club would critique each presentation. “That was the era of that sort of thing happening,” said Freund. “It was part of the woman’s club movement.” Those who were absent, tardy, or who did not present their paper on time had to pay a fine. The first humanitarian work the club was involved in was the aftermath of the Great Flood of 1913. Since then, humanitarian work and serving the community has been their ultimate goal. “What began as a literary society has morphed into a service organization,” said Freund. Each year in September, the Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club has their annual Bargain Fair at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds where they sell gently-used clothes and household items. All the proceeds then go back into the community through various agencies. The Bargain Fair usually brings in about $4,000 each year. The Bargain Fair was originally at the Coshocton Fairgrounds and then was moved to the Old Armory on Otsego Avenue. In 2001, as the women were setting up for the event, the World Trade Center was attacked and the Bargain Fair was moved back to the Fairgrounds for security reasons. There are currently more than 90 members in the Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club: 41 are active, 37 are associates, and 16 are honorary. To become an honorary member, a woman must be an active member of the club for 25 years. Women who want to join the club must first be invited to join and then approved by members. Annual dues, including the Christmas project, are $25. Members are looking for women who would be willing to be an active member, participate in the Bargain Fair, and give back to the community. Freund said one of the club’s major accomplishments is their continuity of meeting monthly from October to May and the fact that they are always concerned about helping the community. “It’s pretty exciting to think we’ve been around for 100 years and we’re going to have a lovely dinner party for all the members who are able to come,” she said. The other student is Natalie Uhl, a fourth grader at Lincoln Elementary who had her work chosen to be exhibited at the Youth Art Month Exhibition. Her artwork will be on display at the State Teachers Retirement System in Columbus. More than one hundred and sixty pieces of art work were selected from the nine OAEA regions in Ohio for this show. The recognition ceremony was held March 10.

Recently two students from the Coshocton City Schools had their artwork on display in Columbus for the Ohio Art Education Association. Scott Shepherd, a fourth grader from South Lawn Elementary was chosen to be exhibited at the 32nd annual Young People’s Art Exhibition. His artwork will be displayed in the Ohio Department of Education building during the summer of 2012.

Continuing a series of economic development based workshops, the Coshocton Port Authority is hosting an entrepreneurism seminar Friday, April 13. The seminar, which will be facilitated on the Coshocton Campus by the Small Business Development Center at Kent State Tuscarawas, will center on generating ideas and the planning needed to develop those ideas. It is open to anyone, whether you are in a business now and want to expand your current offerings or if you are just considering starting a business. The focus of this seminar will be on the oil and gas industry that is on the doorstep of our county. The workshop will be held on the Coshocton Campus of COTC in Room 150. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. There is no charge to attend thanks to funds provided to the port authority by the Schooler Family Foundation. Ed Penland, who also is a resident at Echoing Hills, was enjoying his time at Kids America, especially the second place ribbon he earned in the basketball event. “I love it,” he said. “I enjoy sports.” Dane Weaver, Colten Kelso and Shawn Walters, seniors from River View High School were having fun volunteering and working with the track and field participants. “They aren’t really competitive,” Weaver said. “They are all just happy to get out and do the events.” Kelso agreed with Weaver. “They all cheer for each other,” he said. “It’s awesome to see them smile and be happy. They all tell each other they did an awesome job and did good.” Walters was glad he could help out at the football toss event with his River View classmates. “I’m very fortunate and I wanted to give back to help others who need it,” he said. “The best thing has been seeing how excited they are. They don’t care if they threw it two feet or 20 feet.” The participants in the March 20 event were from Echoing Hill, RHDD, Hopewell Industries and Lafayette Meadows. Community Calendar Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. The featured band performs from 7 – 9 p.m. and acoustic jam follows from 9:15 – 11 p.m. The featured band for April 28 is Frosty Morning Bluegrass Band. Connect Your Community Classes. Upcoming Connect Your Community Classes will be at 509 Main Street in Coshocton on the following days: each Saturday in March from 9 a.m. – Noon. Call 575-4487 to schedule a class. Classes may be canceled due to lack of participants.

Coshocton High School Class of 1977 Reunion. They are making plans for their 35th reunion and need help locating classmates. The Star Family Circus will be at the National Guard Armory in Coshocton on March 29-30 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students 13 – 17 years old, and children 12 years and younger are admitted free. The circus will feature “Might Jack” the boxing kangaroo, and trained animals, acrobats, aerialists, and jugglers. Adults must attend with children. MS Ohio Walk team Crowtown Crusaders fundraiser. They will have a cornhole tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at St. John’s United Church of Christ. The cost is $20 for teams of two and there also will be a 50/50 drawing, food and a monetary prize for the first and second place team. Those interested in competing are asked to call Murray at 202-0762 by Saturday, March 24. Cemetery Clean-Up. The Coshocton City Mayor’s Office announced that the annual spring clean-up at South Lawn, Oakridge and Roscoe cemeteries will begin on Monday, April 2. Anyone wishing to save grave blankets, wreaths or other miscellaneous items must remove them by Friday, March 30. New wreaths, grave blankets, etc. may be placed on graves after April 8.

Cornhole Tournament to Benefit MS Ohio Buckeye Walk. There will be a cornhole tournament to benefit MS Ohio Buckeye Walk on Saturday, March 31 at St. Johns United Church of Christ starting at 11 a.m. This is a bracket style tournament. First and second place prizes will be awarded. Best of three single elimination. There will be a 50/50 drawing and food stand. Registration required for event with $20 team fee. All proceeds go to Team Crowtown Crusaders Fund for Walk MS and National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The walk will be April 21 at Dawes Arboretum in Newark, Ohio. A meal, music and more will be at Agents Auction Building on Sunday, April 15 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The menu will include spaghetti, salad, roll, drink, and dessert with live entertainment by Max Hardesty. The game is set for noon Saturday, April 21, at Kids America and will benefit Breanne “Breezy” Williams. She was diagnosed in September with Stage Four Breast Cancer, which recently spread to her chest and lymph nodes. Admission and concession stand are a donation. There also will be raffles, a 50/50 drawing and halftime entertainment by Jody’s Dance. Donations also can be made at Home Loan Savings Bank. Fifth annual Leanne Marie Hittle Memorial Golf Tournament. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for this four-man scramble set for Saturday, May 12, at Hickory Flat Greens Golf Course. There is a limit of 36 teams and entry fee per person is $30 for members with cart, $40 for members without cart and $50 for non-members. The top three places win money (based on the number of teams) and a hole in one wins a new car sponsored by DeCosky Dealerships. All proceeds benefit the Leanne Marie Hittle Memorial Scholarship Fund. There will be a steak dinner at the end, 50/50 raffles and skin pot optional. Deadline for entry is Saturday, May 5. Church Events Yard Sale. A yard sale will be at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Proceeds will be going towards Relay For Life.

Card Shower. Autumn Extended Care is hosting a card shower for Mother Sara Thomas to welcome her to Autumn Extended Care located at 1433 Walnut Street in Coshocton.

A Gathering of Songs. Event is planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Cornerstone North Church, 1124 W. State St., Newcomerstown. Admission and food are free and all are welcome. A nursery will be provided.

Donations. Linda Taylor Johnson of West Lafayette has stage two breast cancer. She is undergoing treatment. If you would like to help, donations can be mailed to The Home Loan Savings Bank, 503 W. Main St., West Lafayette, OH 43845.

Community Dinner. The Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church has a community dinner the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The dinner is served at the Burt Fellowship Hall on Orange Street.

Church of Christ. The Church of Christ at 1800 Chestnut Street has new winter hours for the clothing room and food pantry. They are March 29 from 9 – 11 a.m. Beginning in April, they will be open every Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m. Bus to pick up kids for church events. The Chili Crossroads Bible Church is using its new 33-passenger bus to pick up kids in Baltic every Wednesday night. The bus stops in the Baltic park at 6 p.m. and returns at 8:20 p.m. Children are brought to the church for exciting AWANA games and fun learning about God. Clubs and Organizations Pancake Day. The Warsaw Lions Pancake Day will be Saturday, March 31 from 7 a.m. – Noon at the Warsaw Fire Department. A donation of $5 is asked for those eight years or older and $3 for those under eight years old. There will also be a bake sale by the Warsaw United Methodist Church. 4-H Frozen Food Sale. It is time once again for the annual 4-H Frozen Food Sale. Order forms are currently available from any 4-H member or may be picked up from the OSU Extension Office. Orders will be accepted now through April 13. The annual Frozen Food sale has the potential to be a large fundraiser for all local 4-H Clubs as each club earns 10% of their total sales. The frozen food sale also enables members to earn 4-H Camp scholarships. Each member who sells at least $250 in frozen food receives a $15 scholarship toward their 4-H Junior Camp experience. Scholarships are also offered for those who sell $500 or more and several youth sell in excess of $1,000 which allows them to attend 4-H Junior Camp at no charge. The sale is offered annually and they are always very grateful to the overwhelming support that each member and club receives from our community. As always, the entire 4-H program thanks you for your support! Farmer’s Market Forum. The Fresno Market will be having an Open Forum for any and all county residents that would be interested in becoming a new vendor for the 2012 Farm Market season. On Friday, April 13 from 4 - 6 p.m., stop in at the Farmers’ Market red building located next to McCoy’s Auto in downtown Fresno to meet current vendors and see what is in the works for the 2012 Fresno Farmers’ Market. First Step 5 K Walk. First Step will be sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk on April 28 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Coshocton County Courthouse. Equal Pay Day Dinner. The Coshocton BPW will be having their Equal Pay Day Dinner Tuesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. at Roscoe United Methodist Church located at 475 High Street. The speaker will be Kathy Groobs, author of Pink Politics. Her topic will be “Nowhere Near Equal” – a candid discussion on women’s politics and equal pay. Cost for women is $8 and cost for men is $10. Tickets are available from any BPW member or call 294-0199. Coshocton Parent and Toddlers. The group meets from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Church of the Nazarene. Parents, grandparents or anyone looking after a child between the ages of 0-3 is welcome to attend the program. There are lots of toys for the children to play with and refreshments for them and the adults. Cost is $2 per child and there is no charge for adults. Those who decided to become members only need to pay $1 per child. Your first meeting is free and becoming a member is optional. Fees go toward the cost of refreshments. VFW 1330 Auxiliary meets the first Monday of each month at the Post located at 614 Walnut Street at 9 a.m. Please attend. Their nominations and election of officers will be April 2 at 9 a.m. at the post. To avoid losing their charter, new officers are needed. Members please attend.

School Events Shrimp and Fish Dinner. Sacred Heart School’s annual Fish and Shrimp Dinner will be March 30 from 5 – 8 p.m. in the school gym. They will be serving deep fried cod, shrimp, hushpuppies, coleslaw, beverages, and desserts. Homemade clam chowder and shecrab soup will be available as well. All proceeds to benefit Sacred Heart School. Rising Tide Aquatic Club. Rising Tide Aquatic Club will be having a registration at the Janet Jones Mulligan Memorial Natatorium at Coshocton High School April 4 – 5 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. New swimmers must arrive at the pool prepared to swim for the coach. The Club is for individuals between the ages of 5 and 18 who are able to swim 25 meters without assistance. Expectations are proficient freestyle stroke and ability to dive from the side of the pool. Cost for advanced swimmers is $135, intermediate is $80, and beginners is $50. Need-based scholarships or payment options are available. The club practices April through July at different meeting times depending on swimming level. Swim meets are Wednesdays at 6 p.m. beginning in midJune and running through the end of July. Also on April 4, they will be conducting a mock swim meet at 5:30 p.m.
