the wonders of the season The word “Spring” conjures up different meanings for just about everyone. In addition to the beauty of the
dogwoods, magnolia trees, daffodils and tulips, there is another sign of spring. And that sign is made of metal with bright orange paint and can generate a different type of “ooh” and “aah”. But it is a necessity of progress and maintaining our infrastructure. Construction is slated to begin as early as Monday, Apr. 19 to resurface Second Street in Coshocton as this sign located at the lower end of Main Street indicates. BeACon

We might not be able to hear your laugh, But we know you are still laughing. We might not be able to see you smile, But we know you’re watching over us and still smiling. We might not ever fully get over you being gone, But we know we were blessed for the time we did have with you. Your laughter echoes in our memories, today we are honoring those memories, celebrating your gracious spirit and remembering a wonderful life.

We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all our many friends and family who helped us get through this trying time. Maybe you sent a beautiful card, food, monetary donation or a beautiful flower arrangement, each of these items was greatly appreciated. Mostly we would like to thank all who have kept Jacki and her family in their daily prayers. It has helped us and will continue to keep us strong. A special thank you to Don Dolick for his wonderful message and words of encouragement. Also a thank you to the ladies of the church who provided a wonderful dinner for us. A thank you to Lincoln Elementary and Coshocton Junior High for all that you have done for the family. Thanks also to Given Dawson Funeral Home for guiding us through this difficult time. Jacki’s smiling face will be missed by the many lives she touched, but the memories we have will remain in our hearts forever.
Thanks again to everyone and God Bless. 0014_041410

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 18 - 24 and the Victims’ Rights Week Annual Luncheon will be Tuesday, April 20 from Noon - 1 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church, located at 4th and Chestnut Streets. Guest speakers are Jim and Elsa Croucher, the founders of “Citizens Against Domestic Violence”. On Dec. 21, 1992, Tina Croucher was asleep in her bed in her parent’s home when her abusive ex-boyfriend, Joseph Parker, came into her room and shot her in the head as she slept. He then turned the gun on himself. This tragic event took place just four days before Christmas. Tina was only 18 years old. Four years after Tina’s death, Jim and Elsa Croucher began “Citizens Against Domestic Violence”. Jim & Elsa decided to dedicate their lives to helping other young people avoid Tina’s fate. “We were going to have to make something positive out of our daughter’s murder,” said Elsa Croucher. Currently House Bill 19, dubbed “Tina’s Law” has been signed by Governor Ted Strickland on Dec. 29, 2009. From The Coshocton Wochenblatt January 1910 Twenty nine of the thirty one land surveyers held a meeting at the Courthouse last week to discuss and estimate Real Estates. They came to the conclusion that real estate (land property) is worth more than 10 years ago. A higher estimate meets lower taxes. A heavy church bell, weighing 1800 lbs, fell to the basement of St Clemens church in Navarre. It crashed through the bell tower while the bell was ringing. Luckily, no one was injured, but the damage was about $500. The instruments arrived for the new music band of the German City Band. The boys are already diligently practicing. The schooled musicians with an emminent director are expected to perform for the members of the City Council one evening soon. The Beacon wants your opinion! man that she is very thankful to have in her life and who is very supportive of her. Jessie Marcincavage introduced the next speaker who has suffered from domestic violence her whole life, even witnessing it as a child. She talked a little bit of why women stay with their abusers. That seems to be the first question asked of women when people learn they were in an abusive relationship, but as she said, this question lays the blame on the woman for staying, when in reality, it’s not her fault. Some of the many reasons include: low self esteem, believing it’s your own fault, isolation from family and friends, the line they hear from their abuser “I’m sorry. I’ll never do it again”, and worried about what others would say if they left their current situation. She ended her life story with a song that has been a meaningful part of her life, “Ask Me” by Amy Grant. The event ended with Victoria L. Laudick, Executive Director, sharing her thoughts about First Step. “The tears today are ‘I made it’,” said Laudick, “The tears used to be about fear and suffering. Tears of sorrow from past memories and happiness for a bright future flowed as two brave women stood up and told their stories of domestic violence at the 15th Year Celebration of First Step Family Violence Intervention Services Inc. in Coshocton. The event took place at the Lake Park Pavilion on Thursday, April 8 and was dedicated in honor of the fearless survivors and the memory of those who had been killed due to domestic violence. A multitude of t-shirts made by victims of domestic violence or sexual assault were hung over the windows in the Pavilion. The shirts were all different colors, each color representing a different form of abuse. White represented the death of a victim, yellow represented battered or assaulted victims, red, pink and orange represented incest and sexual abuse survivors, and blue and green represented victims attacked due to sexual orientation. Each shirt was made by a victim in Coshocton County. First Step also provided a small memorial for each person who were killed at the hands of their abusers. An empty seat decorated with a white t-shirt stood solemnly at each table. A plate with a sign bearing the word, “Reserved” was placed on the table in front of the empty chair. This small but poignant memorial reminded everyone present that, although victims may have lost their lives due to domestic violence, they will never be forgotten. The event started at 6 p.m. with a warm welcome by President Kathy Bauman. She explained the empty place at the table, the symbolism of the t-shirts, and two posters that were hung behind the podium made by River View students. Kim Gress introduced Board Members, staff and volunteers at First Step, and Jill Lahna welcomed elected officials. Rita Myers gave the prayer and then dinner was served. The Coshocton Memorial Hospital Dietary Department provided a delicious meal of fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, carrots, rolls, salad, and cake. After dinner, Crystal Kiser introduced past Board Members and then Tomma Bordenkircher introduced Troy Balderson, State Representative 94th District. He spoke about laws being passed in the House that will protect victims of domestic violence, including Housebill 391. This bill will allow victims of domestic violence to keep their address private. “The fact that one in four women will be abused in their lifetime is hard to fathom,” said Balderson, “But it’s the truth.” Balderson ended his speech by praising First Step for all of their hard work and dedication and wishing them a happy anniversary. Then, B.J. Taylor introduced one of the victims of domestic violence that spoke about her experience. She spoke of how she escaped her pain with drugs, alcohol, crime and overeating. Now, she is a changed woman and has lost 150 pounds. Her dramatic life story was filled with people in her life that helped her get to where she is today. This wonderful woman has finally found true love and will be married soon to a

a table of 6 to 8 judges (total number of judges for this contest was 56), in presentation, tenderness and taste would be deemed the “Top of the Lake BBQ Affair” Grand Champion. A perfect score in all 4 classes of meat would be 800 points. Team Rine-O finished 32nd, out of 44 professional teams, with a score of 681.56667. They missed the “Top Ten” by a mere 47.08332 points and finished only 87.03334 points behind the Grand Champion. Greg, Randy, Steve along with their families and friends have started an adventure into the BBQ Cooking Circuit, that many never knew existed. Team Rine-O would like to thank their sponsors, the Coshocton Browns Backers, Don Freed and Scott and Pam Grisset. A special thanks to Dave Lear, Mary Countryman and Sadie for making the trip and rooting them on. Team Rine-O also wanted to thank their families and loyal friends for making their first contest truly a family affair, with memories to last a lifetime. Team Rine-O also looks forward to hosting a Coshocton BBQ Contest, in the future. Your next chance to taste the Team Rine-O style of BBQ will be on April 24, at the 2nd, “Riders 4 Relief Charity Motorcycle Show”, which is hosted by Auer Ace Hardware, Autumn Health Care, Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Coshocton, H & H Auto Body and Stewart Interiors. This event will benefit the New Life Ministries Food Pantry of Coshocton and Lowernine.org of New Orleans. For more info on this event, call Amy or Debbie at 622-4056. A local BBQ catering/ food vending company, Team Rine-O, recently traveled to Florida to compete in the “Top of the Lake BBQ Affair”. This event was sanctioned by the Florida Bar-B-Que Association, and is the first contest of their Triple Crown Series of contests. Greg, Randy, and his wife Janet, joined their Florida brother, Steve, and his wife Cindy, along with Kerry Vordtriedt and Bruce Fuhrer, to compete against some of the biggest names in the BBQ world. Team Rine-O competed in all 4 meat categories, making them eligible for the Grand Championship. Forty-four professional teams competed for this coveted title. The Team Rine-O “BBQ Brew Crew” arrived at the Agri-Civic Center at 11:15 a.m. on Friday to set up their cooking site. After passing the inspection and trimming and prepping of the chicken, ribs, pork and brisket began. Team Rine-O used their own blend of seasoning, Team Rine-O Seasoning/Rub, which is available locally at Collins Meat Market, Buehlers and Bakers IGA. Using three home offset “Stick Burners”, and 1 Orion Home Smoker, the “David’s” challenged the “Goliaths”, who were cooking on professional and custom-made smokers. Team Rine-O has fixed and served food to thousands of people, but this was their first attempt to follow a regulated pre-determined turn-in time schedule. Four different types of meat must be turned in within 1 hour of each other. Chicken comes off the smoker first, with a turn in time of 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by ribs at noon, pork at 1 p.m. and finally brisket at 2 p.m. After a night of spraying, slopping and saucing their meats, it was time to start thinking about the presentation category of the judging. The FBA does not allow any type of garnishment in your turn in container, meat only. That means your placement of your individual pieces, whether they are sliced, pulled or chunked, must look “I’d walk 200 miles to taste that” good. There are a number of tricks of the trade, all of which Team Rine-O learned after the competition. The team with the best scores, determined by

Health limitations or depression may require at-home seniors to have help maintaining their personal hygiene and appearance, and a home healthcare aide can assist. Bathing should be a regular routine. Hair washing may be done in the home, or the aide may take the senior to the barber shop or salon for a regular appointment. Assistance or supervision with shaving may include the use of an electric razor. Women may like to have makeup applied. The aide can make sure senior clients keep their fingernails and toenails trimmed. Also, they will encourage twice-a-day tooth brushing and proper care of dentures. These procedures help maintain the health and promote a sense of dignity and self-worth in the senior. Maintaining independence is vital to keeping your loved ones happy and healthy at home. Bathing and grooming is just part of that. At INTERIM HEALTHCARE OF COSHOCTON, our home healthcare aides can also help with meals, getting dressed, and errands, all of which can keep your parents in their homes longer. We can also provide skilled medical care from experienced RNs, LPNs, and therapists, if your loved one requires more complex at-home attention. Call 877-759-2106 today to learn about our wide variety of services, from occasional overnight respite care to full-time live-in care. We know nobody likes to think about these things, but we’re here when you need us. We are located at 420 Downtowner Plaza. People you count on, care you can trust. P.S. Always treat a senior as an adult, with the dignity and respect he or she deserves.

earth greets sky and sky greets water.” Staufer says all of the pieces included in the show were created to convey and interpret her life journey on the physical, emotional and spiritual plane. She utilizes the consistent appearance of horizon or horizontal lines as an implicit theme within the paintings. “For me, the horizon represents a boundary that I can strive toward, try to surpass, yet never reach, like a moving target,” she said. “Perhaps the most powerful and beautiful symbol, my attraction is not to the horizon as a line, but to its implication as a space between worlds.” Staufer is formerly from Medina, Ohio, but now lives on an old farm in Coshocton County, where she teaches and holds many classes at her farm studio. “I am an artist as a teacher,” she said. “Within every individual is the capacity to create, but it requires an experienced teacher with a depth of artistic knowledge to guide the student toward finding their authentic voice.” A price list is available for the pieces in the Horizons show at the Pomerene Center for the Arts. The Center is located at 317 Mulberry Street in Coshocton and is open Tuesday through Friday from 1- 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday by appointment. Horizons is a unique solo art show featuring the work of Ohio mixed media artist, Joan Staufer. Over 50 pieces are on display until April 25, at the Pomerene Center for the Arts. Horizons explores Staufer’s visual musings on lines of separation through her use of mixed media paintings on canvas, wood and altered books. “I can’t help but wonder if living in the low lands of Ohio in a narrow valley fuels my fascination with and longing towards the horizon,” said Staufer. “In this show we have included many of my newer pieces that have never been exhibited, along with a few favorite horizon landscape ‘oldies’. The show includes works that range in size from 48” x 48” to 2” x 2”.” Many things about Staufer’s paintings are unique, including how she does it, tossing aside the traditional easel for a more ‘down to earth’ process. “When I paint, I work on the floor,” she said. “I have a large canvas that I lay on the floor and that’s where I work. I even paint a lot with my hands.” There’s more than meets the eye in Staufer’s paintings. If you look closely, you’ll see many, many layers, some of them being a layer of water. “I’ve always been a drip painter,” said Staufer. “Drips of paint or water create a sense of movement and the passage of time.” In addition to traditional paints, pastels and graphite, Staufer also incorporates other natural materials such as sage, porcupine quills, pine needles, semi precious stones, charcoal from a Montana forest fire, South Dakota sage stems and even a ceremony dress. “Horizons exposes a visual subtext within my work,” said Staufer. “As a symbolist painter, I utilize both universal and personal iconography to convey earthly and spiritual realms. Some Horizon pieces were created in times of sorrow, some in fun, some in response to a dream, some as a meditative mantra, some, simply as an exploration of where

Clary Gardens will be having its annual “Bulbs in Bloom” weekends to celebrate spring and to offer guided tours of this region’s newest developing botanical garden. This event will be April 17, 18, 24, and 25. Guided tours will be given every half hour on each Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and each Sunday from Noon – 3 p.m. However, due to the unseasonably warm temperatures, visitors are encouraged to come out to the gardens right now and see the early peak bloom of the daffodils and tulips. This year, there will not be as many bulbs blooming towards the end of April. The bulbs were planted throughout the garden last fall by volunteers as well as community service workers from Coshocton Municipal Court. There are several varieties of tulips in bloom such as Darwin hybrids, single late, and triumph. Numerous types of daffodils like ‘Thalia’, and the heirloom ‘Mount Hood’, circa 1930. Sprinkled amid the tulips and daffodils are some grape hyacinths and Fritillaria. Clary Gardens has free admission and is open daily to the public, daily, from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. this time of year. Visitors are always welcome to take a self-guided tour anytime during these hours and brochures/maps are available in the parking
home and outdoors
lots. Be sure to check-out the springhouse, walk the half mile woodland trail, and then look for the shubunkin fish in one of the ponds. Visitors are welcome to bring a blanket for picnicking in the garden or in the amphitheatre, being sure to leave no food and trash. Clary Gardens is located at 588 West Chestnut Street (SR 541 West), Coshocton, OH 43812, just past the south entrance to Roscoe Village. Viva las Vegas! The name of the game was Texas Hold ‘Em poker. One hundred eighty-nine people participated in the World Series Poker Tournament for Senior Citizens in Wheeling, WV. Charles Allmack, owner of C & M Collectibles in Coshocton, was one competitor. He fought his way up to the final ten and then made it all the way to the top five. The lucky contestants who made it to the top five received an all-expenses paid trip to the World Series Poker Tournament for Senior Citizens in Las Vegas this June. “I’ve been playing for a long time,” said Charles, “Ever since I was a kid. I’m 73 years old

He’s been to Las Vegas to play poker before, but he’s looking forward to going again. Charles plays poker with friends whenever he can and plays online for fun. He said he would like to especially thank his wife, Martha, for supporting him and taking him to Las Vegas.

April 16th, 1950. Dig out those dirty clothes and start washing. A new and improved Laundromat opened on Walnut St in Coshocton and was ready for some bubbles and suds. The new business featured some brand spanking new equipment such as 15 Westinghouse Laundromat automatic washers, two large Hammond gas dryers, and a centrifugal extractor for removing access water from those wet clothes. The new center provided customers with plenty of room, more than enough washers and dryers, and chairs so that customers could rest their weary feet while they wait on their load to finish.

With the retirement of postmaster Clara Sohngen came the possible end of the Roscoe post office. The post office was started by James LeRetilley back in 1826, and since then, over 20 postmasters have taken over the position. No official word of closing the post office had been decided yet, but since post office departments seldom have two locations in a city the size of Coshocton, the old building was likely to be closed. Mail service to residents living on the west side of the river would now receive mail via a city route. Because of this, each resident was now required to display house numbers and to erect a mailbox in their front yard.

The locally esteemed artist, Vivian Williams, planed to showcase some of her work at her 11th art show before heading to Los Angeles to teach at the California Institute of Arts. She had been a resident in Coshocton for 21 years and had won many local and national awards for her art. She told reporters that her favorite art medium was watercolor because, “If you make a mistake with water colors, you have no choice but to make something of it.” She even studied art in Italy and had some of her work published in “The Wonderful World of Ohio” magazine. She said she is looking forward to spending more time with her son in California, a former WTNS radio announcer, who became a TV news anchorman in California.

The 2010 Coshocton County Dairy Banquet, hosted by the Coshocton County Dairy Service unit, was held on Friday, Apr. 9 at the Coshocton County Career Center. Following a fantastic meal topped off by udderly delicious ice cream sundaes prepared under the direction of Marilyn Wyler and the Fresno United Methodist Church women, the attendees heard from veterinarian Dr. Rick Daugherty. Daugherty spoke about his mission trip to the Middle East, where he spent time in both Iraq and Egypt. The purpose of the trip was to take the gospel to the Middle East, where it is against the law in many countries to evangelize Muslims. Daugherty said that the group spreads the gospel through their example of love and friendship. Coshocton County dairy producers were awarded for top production in the county. Charles and Daryl Duncan were awarded first place in milk – 29,536 pounds, Tumblin Dairy Farm was awarded second place in milk – 21,603 pounds and Paul Snyder was awarded third place in milk – 21,148 pounds. People enjoy getting together at this event and catching up on their families, sharing best practices and talk about what they’re doing to stay profitable.” Tiffany Zimmerman was crowned the 2010 Coshocton County Dairy

river View ffa member talks about “change” Following a wonderful meal prepared by the RV food staff and helped by Nelson and Linda Hall and Tai McCurdy of the FFA alumni, River View FFA student and 2009-2010 State FFA Vice-President Suzie McMullen captivated the audience as the guest speaker at the 45th annual River View FFA banquet, held on Apr. 6 at the high school. McMullen talked about her own life and the fact that, “Change is inevitable; you can’t avoid it or slow it down.” McMullen used six of her fellow FFA members to hold large letter signs each proclaiming a letter in the word Change. “Care about others, Help others, Achieve, Never give up, Get tough and Excel, starting with yourself! McMullen continued, “This is surreal to me. I always dreamed of speaking in front of my own FFA chapter. Mr. Rich and Mrs. Buxton have always been there for me. If you have a dream, follow it. Look in the mirror and ask, “Are you proud of what you see? If not, change! Be the person you want to be.” Over 270 members were present at the banquet. Scholarship awards were presented to the member of each class with the highest grade point average in his or her respective class. Freshman class winner was Justine Moran, sophomore, Jessie Carnes, junior class winner was Emily Stout and senior class winner was Kim Croft. The chapter star Greenhand award went to Marion Stutzman. The River View star chapter farmer for 2010 was Jordon Mullett, with the top sophomore award going to Danielle WoodwardWells. Top junior was Jordon Mullett and the top senior was Duane Stutzman. Two members earned their state FFA degree, which will be awarded in May in Columbus at the State FFA convention. The two are; Joel Hamric and Jordon Mullett. River View had two American Degree recipients who were; Allyssa McMullen and Jesse Wright. The chapter has now had forty six American Degrees awarded. Three more members of the River View FFA chapter will be awarded their degrees this coming October in Indianapolis; Morgan Carey, Craig Hunter and Morgan Landis. said, “This is our way of giving back. This is a good group of kids. I enjoy it.” Guest speaker Suzie McMullen commented on how it felt to speak at her own school, “During the year I have spoken at a lot of schools but to come back here is really an honor. These are the people that helped get me to where I am today and I owe them a lot. I just really want to come back and impress them and show them that they have done a great job with me.” River View FFA member and chapter President Duane Stutzman, said, “FFA probably has been the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life. It’s really built me as a person and my character; it’s really boosted my self-esteem. From being really shy in my freshman year talking in front of crowds to now I could speak in front of a thousand people and I wouldn’t mind.
FFA really picks something out of you that you like. I’m very proud to serve as an officer – it’s an honor to serve as a chapter officer – in the largest youth organization in the world. I want to wish the new officer team the best of luck.” River View high school principal Mr. Chuck Rinkes, added, “The really neat thing is that you see all the active alumni and the parents here supporting the program. To see all that support makes you feel really good about where you are. River View FFA is well known not only in this region but all the way across the state. Our two advisors, Mr. Rich and Mrs. Buxton, have been doing this a long time and have prepared our kids well for the events they’re in. We have great kids in the entire school district and the kids in FFA are just another shining example of the things we try to do every day”.

The Coshocton Fire Department will be checking hydrants in the city, weather permitting, beginning on April 19. The duty shift will notify WTNS radio and the Tribune which area of the city they will be checking each day. The residents in the area that is being tested may experience some discoloration in their water. Just let the water run for a few minutes and it should clear up. The hydrants are tested each spring and fall to ensure that each hydrant works correctly. Thank you for your patience.
