Motorcycles across the county are once again revving up their engines for the third annual Riders for Relief event on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. sponsored by Auer Ace Hardware and supported by Autumn Healthcare, Home Loan Savings Bank and Roscoe Village. This year, the event will be located in Roscoe Village, so as to have all the events in one location. Last year, they had events both at Drennen Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Autumn Healthcare. There will be fun for the whole family including a kids playground, monster truck bounce house, a bike parade and live music by Jet, Half Moon, and Alliance. There will also be a Bloodmobile during the event. The cost to register a bike is $5 and a nonperishable food item. All proceeds will go toward Shepherd’s Christian Assembly, New Life Ministry Food Pantry, and Autumn Healthcare’s Alzheimer’s Wing. Funds are also being raised for Deb’s “Fight Like a Farm Girl” Susan G. Komen, Walk for the Cure team, Coshocton Relay for Life Central Committee, and Boy Scout Troop 400. Admission and parking are free. They will also be having a basket raffle at about 2:30 p.m. About 28 themed baskets will be raffled off and they are currently on display at Auer Ace Hardware. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six and are currently being sold at the store. Winners to not have to be present to receive the basket. Working with choir director, Chuck Snyder is something Barrick says she really enjoys and she feels privileged to be involved in these choirs. “He is a wealth of knowledge and I respect his opinion,” she said. “I am amazed at how he creates and puts these concerts together each season. I was in high school and college, and for several vocal groups in college,” she said. “Currently, I also do a lot of accompanying for the high school and junior high solo and ensemble contests at Tri Valley.” Playing for the Coshocton Community Choir has been an additional outlet for her talents. “The selection of music that is chosen for this choir is something you don’t normally get the opportunity to play,” she said. “It was a real challenge for me at first since my personality is more barriCk reserved. Relay teams had different stations set up selling food, t-shirts, and other items to raise money for Relay. After the walk, the dogs and their owners gathered back at the stations to compete for prizes in a course for the dogs and Frisbee. Coshocton Relay teams have first Bark for a Cure fundraiser

The Millfork Valley 4-H Club was called to order by past secretary, Tessa Frazer on March 22 at the Roscoe United Methodist Church in the gym. Devon Fortune led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Kendra Walsh led the 4-H Pledge and Davina Stroia recited the 4-H motto. Roll call was answered by favorite spring flower. Canal Quilters to have 24th annual show

Genealogy, Crime Prevention, Fingerprinting, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, and Scholarship merit badges. Chip Udischas gave a Friends of Scouting presentation. The troop met the goal to receive their badges and rank for the year. The Scoutmaster, Steve Bordenkircher, circulated information about Boy Scout Summer Camp at MVSR. The Troop is planning to work on Veterinary Medicine merit badge, Stamp Collecting merit badge, and Cycling merit badge at the meetings in the next few months. They will be traveling to OSU Airport to complete the Aviation merit badge in May. Over 200 quilts will be on public display at the 24th annual Canal Quilters quit show on Friday, April 29 – Sunday, May 1. In keeping the bicentennial celebrations, the theme this year will be “Bicentennial: Bringing the Generations Together”. Quilts will be divided into separate categories for the show including pieced bed quilts, appliqué bed quilts, mixed technique bed quilts, youth quilts and wall hangings. There will also be a miscellaneous category including clothing and needlework. One quilt will be up for raffle during the show. April 27th, 1951 Kick up your spurs! The Coshocton High School junior and freshman class were throwing a western-themed party in the gymnasium. The fun kicked off that evening with the junior party and the freshman party took place the next evening. The party promised to be a lot of fun for any student with a little cowboy or cowgirl in him. There was to be square dancing, round dancing and card games. Each home room class also presented a skit that was judged by a panel of faculty members. Yeehaw!

1961

April 27th, 1961 The Coshocton Redskins handed the Newcomerstown Trojans a defeat the previous Wednesday with a score of 8-1. The Coshocton boys scored in the first five innings, dashing the Trojans’ dream of victory. The Trojans scored a run in the seventh inning, but that wasn’t enough as the Redskins were already up by eight. Bill McConnell and Kenny Sturtz had two hits and four at-bats for the Redskins. McConnell also had two runs for the team. The Redskins were scheduled to play Dover that night and hopefully still had some of their momentum left.

1971

April 27th, 1971 The 97th Kentucky Derby was soon approaching and after the National Anthem and the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home”, the River View High School band would give the world’s finest racehorses a good ol’ Coshocton County sendoff. The 130-member band had a full trip ahead of them including a tribute to America in the Pegasus Parade, a concert at Louisville Downs and performances leading up to the Derby. They also planned a tour of President Lincoln’s home and the Mammoth Cave, along with a boat ride down the Ohio River. Director J.P. Branahm hoped the band would be featured on TV.

May 2nd, 1981 The Coshocton County winners of the ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ poster contest were announced. They were selected from each grade level throughout the elementary county schools and received a savings bond and cash from Bank One. Posters were judged by members of the Coshocton County Fine Arts Guild. All posters were to be on display in the Coshocton downtown merchant windows during the Be Kind to Animals Week.

She told Coffman that in the April edition of PPB, they were having a special feature on calendars and wanted to do a showcase featuring The Novelty Advertising Company. Coffman jumped at the idea and scheduled a phone interview with the editor. In their April edition, PPB featured, ‘Elliot Calendar Co.: Marking the days for more than a century’. The Elliot Calendar Company, which is a part of Novelty Advertising, manufactures calendars for thousands of distributors across the country. They produce 60 different types of calendars, everything from desk pad calendars to large wall calendars. They are one of only two companies that still manufacture day-to-day calendars. Their biggest seller is the #43 Almanac Calendars, which features the farmer’s almanac, and the design of the calendar hasn’t changed in 80 years. Coffman said that usually customers like the traditional calendars and designs, although some prefer to have something different every year. Coffman also said the business has been tracking popularity of calendars and finds that while more people are using digital calendars, most prefer to have a paper calendar available in front of them to write down appointments and to be able to quickly refer to when needed. But the Novelty Advertising Company is so much more than calendars. They can print logos on just about anything, everything from teeshirts to water bottles to Frisbees. They can also print posters, fliers, brochures or programs for any organization. “It’s an opportunity for folks in Coshocton to do business with a company, a manufacturer in Coshocton,” said Coffman. Coffman has always been passionate about keeping the business locally-owned and in the family. In 1917, Coffman’s great-grandfather started working at Novelty and became an officer of the company. After his death, the president of the company contacted Coffman’s grandfather and he began working in 1935, staying for 30 years. His father became involved in 1965 and Greg came on in 1997 after leaving a job in Cleveland because he wanted to keep the company locally-owned. “Coshocton is a good place,” said Coffman, “It’s a great town and I thought, I at least owe this opportunity a shot. The last thing I wanted was for Coshocton to lose a business. When I look at Coshocton, I look at what we have, not at what we’ve lost. I think if we do more of that, we’ll have not only a better attitude, but we’ll be appreciative of what we do have.” The Novelty Advertising Company is located at 1148 Walnut Street and can be contact at 622-3113 or (800) 848-9163. In the late 1800s, a newspaper man named Jasper Meek strolled down the dusty Main Street of Coshocton. He saw a young girl with a pile of books in her hands, which she suddenly dropped, sending dust everywhere. This made a big impression on Jasper and he came up with a clever solution: a burlap bag for school children to carry their books. He decided to contact his good friend from Cantwell Shoes and told him his new idea. He asked his friend if he would give each school child who came into his store to purchase shoes a new burlap book bag with Cantwell Shoes’ logo printed on it. The school children would receive something they could use and the popular shoe store would be advertised on each bag. It was a huge success. Business at Cantwell Shoes had never been better, and Jasper continued to receive orders for more items with company logos imprinted on them. He called his friend William Shaw and in 1886, started the first promotional product industry in the country, which today is a $20 billion industry. “It’s still a booming industry,” said Greg Coffman, president of Novelty Advertising, “and it all started right here in Coshocton.” Together, William and Jasper created many promotional products on any item imaginable in the late 1800s including horse blankets, rulers, fuel gages, metal signs, metal trays, carpenter aprons, and flyswatters. William worked with Jasper for 10 years until he eventually broke away from Jasper and started his own business in 1895, The Novelty Advertising Company, which is still in Coshocton today and still operates in the same building as it did when it was born. The business quickly began to grow and was incorporated in the state of Ohio in 1900. Coshocton used to have 12 promotional product companies in the county. Instead of being in competition with each other, these companies worked together to create new and innovative products for their community. Over time, however, the bigger companies were bought out and the smaller companies faded away, leaving only The Novelty Advertising Company and The Beach Company, both of which were recognized as being one of only about 15 companies in the industry 100 years old or older. “It’s an exciting industry,” said Coffman, “It’s a fun industry and it’s something that Coshocton should be very proud of that it started here and it’s continued on today.” Recently, this 116 year old business was featured in the April edition of PPB, Promotional Products Business. This leading-industry publisher is recognized world-wide, highlighting and showcasing trends in the promotional product industry and reporting on innovative and upcoming products. At a PPI (Promotional Product Industry) conference in Las Vegas, Coffman spoke with the editor of PPB about The Novelty Advertising Company. He told her a little of its history and e-mailed her some photos of his grandfather, who was president of PPAI (Promotional

The Fresno Bible Church Relay Team will be having a silent auction on May 1 at the church to raise money for Relay for Life. Bidding will be from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Some of the items up for auction will be an autographed picture of Kentucky basketball coach, John Calapari; five Cleveland Indians tickets, first row by the visitor’s dug out; an autographed basketball by CBS announcer, Clark Kellog; and items signed by West Virginia basketball coach, Bob Huggins, which will include a basketball, a photo, a set of cups featuring his picture and autograph, and one limited-edition basket with a photo of Coach Huggins and his mother, who passed away from cancer. Only 3500 of the baskets were ever produced.

Charity Kiefner has been announced as the United Way Volunteer of the Month for April 2011. Charity volunteers for Union Recreation starting as a coach five years ago and now has stepped up to be the president when no one else would take it on. Since becoming the president, she has made many improvements to the rec, including better fields, equipment, uniforms and concessions. “Our recreation is truly better due to Charity’s commitment to improve our organization,” said Union treasurer, Heather Filimon, “She is a wonderful person with a huge heart. Union Rec thanks Charity for all she has done.” Charity lives with her husband, Andrew and daughter Kirsten. She works out of the home and also started the Union Aces volleyball program for girls in 3rd – 6th grade.

The Relay Team will also be auctioning off a prime rib dinner, a cutting board, desserts, a basket full of hair care products, among many other items. Some light refreshments will also be available during the silent auction. “We want everyone to come out and bid and raise a lot of money for cancer,” said cochairperson, Debbie Bradford. This is the second year Fresno Bible Church has had a Relay team and they hope to raise somewhere between $5,000 - $10,000 for cancer research. They have also done other fundraisers throughout the year including a spaghetti dinner, a baked potato and salad bar, and bake sales. They did well last year and hope to do even better this year.

area senior high school singers perform last concert with by Jan myers Coshocton youth Chorale Twenty-one seniors with the Coshocton Youth Chorale will be singing for the last time as part of the Coshocton Community Choir’s upcoming spring concert, Soli Deo Gloria. The concert will be Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium. The 12-grade singers include Trent Adams, Kyle Blust, Shawna Carling, Kyle Conrad, Corey Elliott, Stephanie Ellis, McKayla Evans, Meredith Evans, Neal Fox, Brad Harvey, Katie Hildreth, Elizabeth Hilgenberg, Kasi Karr, Cody Kirker, Jenna Kreider, John Lindig, Michael Ondayko, Aaron Owens, Melanie Rice, Dolly Sylacsa, and Colby Tarrh. Many of the students have been a part of the Youth Chorale, under the direction of Charles R. Snyder, for a number of years. Brad Harvey

is a senior at Ridgewood High School and has been singing in the Youth Chorale for three years. “This choir has been a good experience for me,” he said. “It is nice to see people from other schools and I would encourage others to join this choir. If you enjoy singing, this choir is a great experience.” Elizabeth Hilgenberg is a senior at Coshocton High School, has been a four-year member of the group, and was a five-year member of the Children’s Choir. “Mr. Snyder is amazing,” she said. “I love the music and the people. It is so much fun. I was hooked from the first year. Everyone in the group gets along even though we are from different high schools.” John Lindig is a senior at Coshocton County Career Center in the Culinary Arts program

and has been a four-year member of the Youth Chorale. “I am in the choir because of Mr. Snyder’s shameless recruiting,” he said. “I came to a rehearsal one night with a friend and was asked to audition for the group. I enjoy singing and have made many friends in this choir, friends who’ve helped me through some difficult times.” Meredith Evans is a senior at Ridgewood High School and has been singing in the choir for three years. She was also a five-year member of the Children’s Choir. “It is so much fun to sing, especially in Mr. Snyder’s choir,” she said. “I enjoy singing with the other students from the other high schools and then when each of our high schools do the school musicals, we get together and attend each other’s shows.”

liberty Church hosts easter egg hunt Civil war dance mistress to visit by mark fortune Coshocton by Jan myers

The Coshocton County courthouse lawn was decorated with plastic colored Easter eggs of all colors on Easter morning for the Liberty Church Easter egg hunt. The church, located on Main Street in Coshocton, hosted a large Easter egg hunt at the Courtsquare following their Easter morning church service. Pastor Andy Loos said, “This is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. When you have a celebration, that’s a party so we’re throwing a party for Jesus and his resurrection and also have an opportunity for kids to get out and hunt eggs. It’s a lot of fun for them. I think we have a total of 5,000 eggs here. We’ve had a lot of hard work from our volunteers stuffing every egg with candy or prize coupons. This is an opportunity to celebrate but also to draw people in and let them hear the good news of Jesus Christ.” The courthouse was divided into age defined areas by large balloons and shouts of glee filled the morning air as children of all ages ran to and fro filling baskets and buckets with brightly colored plastic Easter eggs filled with candies or gift certificates.

There will be a Civil War Ball on Aug. 13 as part of the Civil War Encampment Days at the Coshocton Airport Grounds. This Coshocton Bicentennial Event will take place Aug. 12 - 14, and the ball will be at 8 p.m. that Saturday evening at the Coshocton Readiness Center. The entire event, including the ball, is free to attend. To help Coshocton prepare for the Civil War Ball, the Coshocton Bicentennial Committee has invited Civil War Dance Mistress, Elizabeth Reeb, from Zanesville, to conduct a free, public informational meeting on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will be in the parlor at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, located at 142 N. Fourth St. Reeb is a professional Civil War dance caller and dress specialist. She will also be the caller who will be at Coshocton’s Civil War Ball on Aug. 13. At the April 27 meeting, Reeb will share information about attire to wear to a Civil War Ball. She will bring several examples of Civil Warera ball gowns, discuss fabrics and patterns for those wishing to make gowns, and share information about where to purchase gowns. The concert, held in conjunction with the Coshocton Community Choir, will be Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at Coshocton High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s McKinley Auditorium. Eighth Grade singers include: Vicky Share, Conner Drennen, Jacqueline Roman, Nikki Leasure, Kelbie Johnson, Ellie Brems, Brendan Dickson, Evan Youker, Sam Scott, Seth Kittner, Lydia Els, James Smith, Patrick Brouse, Hannah Lain, Katie Tupper, Cameron Wiandt and Jacob Panteloukas. Snyder, for several years and most say they plan to try out for the high school group, The Coshocton Youth Chorale. Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The Coshocton Senior Center is a distribution site for free monthly groceries for low income senior citizens age 60 and over living in Coshocton County. To be eligible, your monthly income cannot exceed $1,180 for one person in the household. Add $414 for each additional household member. You can apply for the program at the Coshocton Senior Center at 201 Brown’s Lane, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 622-4852. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music will be the fourth Saturday of each month at the Agents Realty and Auction Services Building located at intersection of State Route 36 and County Road 621. Admission is $5 and there is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and nonalcoholic drinks will be available and furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. Featured band performs each month from 7 – 9 p.m. Acoustic jam to follow from 9 – 11 p.m. Featured band for May is Joe Williams and Deep Water Bluegrass Band. Yellow Flag Sale. There will be a Yellow Flag sale on May 6 – 7 at the First Baptist Church in West Lafayette. The Coshocton County Senior Center will be having a Senior Day on Friday, May 13 from 10 a.m. – Noon. Representatives from area organizations and businesses will have booths set up with information about their services including but not limited to, Coshocton County Coordinated Transportation, Kid’s America, Triplett’s Pharmacy, Area Agency on Aging, and many more! Blood pressure checks will be available by the Health Services of Coshocton County from 10:30 a.m. – Noon. Root beer floats will be served from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Door prizes will be given away. Everyone is encouraged to wear their “coolest sunglasses” as there will be a prize awarded for the coolest shades. The menu will include Salisbury Steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, glazed carrots, pears, dinner roll and milk. Call with lunch reservations by May 9.

Scholarships. The Coshocton County Board of Realtors will be awarding a $1000 scholarship to a senior/graduate from each of the local high schools (River View, Ridgewood and Coshocton) as well as the Coshocton County Career Center. Coshocton County Career Center students should apply through the CCCC, not their home high school. See your guidance counselor or senior advisor for scholarship application and application deadline information. Baseball Game. There will be a Ridgewood Alumni baseball game and banquet on April 30. The banquet is to honor members of the past regional teams. The cost is $50 per person and includes playing in the game, a t-shirt, and dinner at the banquet. Additional dinners can be purchased for $20 per person. The dinner will be at the Coshocton Elks with a social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 50/50 drawing and raffles. The Conesville Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry will be April 30 from 4 – 7 p.m. The menu will include fish or ham, baked beans, potato salad, pie, and coffee. Rent A Wrestler. Area residents can rent a wrestler of Ridgewood High School for a maximum of two hours to do odd jobs around the house such as clean up, loading, hauling, yard work, painting, organizing, etc. Please pay a minimum of $10 per hour. They will also haul away junk including appliances, lawn chairs, batteries, mowers, motors, bed springs, copper, and even old cars. Rent a Wrestler Day is a fundraiser of the Ridgewood Wrestling Boosters in collaboration with Larry Sturtz Cleaning and Hauling. Certain activities are restricted such as operating heavy machinery and all work must be done on site. Wrestlers cannot be transported to another location by a resident. Wrestlers will work in pairs. Golf Outing. The American Red Cross of Ohio Hills Red Cross Classic Golf Outing is scheduled for Saturday, May 14 at River Greens Golf Course located on SR 751 in West Lafayette. Shotgun start at 1 p.m. There will also be a steak fry and many prizes given throughout the day. Event proceeds support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross in the community. Spring Tea. Women of Witness of Coshocton County will be having their annual Spring Tea Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. National Day of Prayer. The Coshocton Ministerial Association and Women of Witness will be hosting the annual National Day of Prayer at the Courtsquare by the Pavilion on May 5 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a prayer service and a coordinated Bible reading. Sign up beforehand at the Good News Bookstore for the Bible reading. There will also be a balloon lift off for the children. Rummage Sale. Central Christian Church will be having a rummage sale on Friday, May 6 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. – Noon, Bag Day. The church is located at the corner of 8th and Main Street in Coshocton. Rummage Sale. The Presbyterian Church on the corner of 4th and Chestnut will be having a Rummage Sale May 13 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. with lots of adult and children’s clothing, and Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. with a bag sale and $4 garbage bag. All proceeds will go to the Presbyterian Woman’s Mission Projects. Martha’s Cupboard. “Martha’s Cupboard” offers free items to any Coshocton County resident in need. #47 The Coshocton Wochenblatt The only foreign newspaper to be published in Coshocton County was the Coshocton Wochenblatt, a German language newspaper established in 1880. The paper lasted 25 years.

Total family income cannot exceed Federal Poverty guidelines at 200% or less of the poverty level. All information will need to be obtained before the child is considered for enrollment. The parents need to provide birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, custody papers, if applicable, and proof of family income. The 107th anniversary and last graduating class of Conesville High School will be June 4 at the Conesville Elementary School Auditorium. The Above and Beyond 4-H Club had their third meeting April 10. Officers were elected at the Friday meeting. Officers are President, Trevor Moden; Vice President, Allen Lautenschleger; Secretary, Trevor Cooper; Treasurer, Carter McGuire; News Reporter, Josh Kempf; Health and Safety, Logan Moses; Environment and Energy, Own Kempf; and Recreation, Nathan Smith. Project books were handed out and officer and livestock project members were reminded of Quality Assurance on April 21 and May 11. They finished their first fundraiser. For their community service project, they are donating 1500 pounds of dog food and some bags of newspapers to the Coshocton animal shelter. The club has 14 members and nine cloverbuds. Advisors are Amanda Lautenschleger, Malinda Lorenz, and Amy McGuire. Cloverbuds leaders are Tonya Cooper and Jennifer Moden.
