SAMMY Always popular with children, Sammy is a life-size mascot who makes it fun to learn about how to save energy. Sammy entertained children and families at Keim Lumber’s recent anniversary celebration. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

Sammy was created as a way to enhance ProVia’s long-standing relationship with the ENERGY STAR program, as ProVia has participated in the program with their energy efficient doors and windows since 2002. One thing the U.S. Department of Energy looks for from their manufacturing-partners is an emphasis on education. So in 2012, ProVia launched a children’s educational campaign to show young consumers how to save energy and be environmentally responsible. ProVia accomplishes this through an in-school educational program and Sammy the Star

SUGARCREEK – ProVia’s popular children’s character, “Sammy the Star” (performed by Kevin North, ProVia’s customer service rep for doors) appeared at Keim Lumber’s Anniversary celebration April 17-20. Sammy’s special gift is sharing all his knowledge about ENERGY STAR products for the home, and how they can save energy and help families become more environmentally responsible. Meeting Sammy makes learning about saving energy fun and memorable, a lasting experience for all.

and industry for being very generous in regards to their donations. This is probably the most looked forward to event for youth in Coshocton County. It’s a special day, it puts a lot of smiles on kids’ faces, and they look forward to it, no question about that. There is always a lot of anticipation building up to the fishing derby and we were fortunate the Good Lord supplied us with great weather. It was certainly a success again this year. Thanks again to everybody that was involved.” There were a total of 19 tagged fish caught which means there are still plenty to catch! CONESVILLE - April 27, 2013 marked the date of the annual Fish Fry at the Conesville Station. It is time to recognize and thank those responsible for its success. The excellent weather was partially responsible for the fine turnout however several persons, businesses and organizations made the evening happen. Our list is in danger of being incomplete as several persons often support in silence and escape our attention. To those we thank first and then, all who supported by attending the event or ordered “take out”. The community continues to support our efforts even during difficult economic times with generous monetary donations, pies, cakes and other foods. Our Auxiliary & Friends of the Department cooked, baked, fried & served food. Buehler’s, Baker’s & Edie Ryan provided food & supplies. Lacy’s Meats, Annin & Co, Designs by Michele and the F.C.V. Firefighters Association furnished ‘Door Prizes or Raffle Gifts’. Members of React assisted by organizing our parking space. The Lucky Learners ‘Four H’ Club cleared tables while their leaders & parents assisted. Rock Tenn printed our postal flyers and Bruce Uher designed it. This annual event has been a focal point in the community for over 58 years and creates an opportunity for many individuals & organizations to work together to accomplish worthwhile goals. “Thank you”, we will put the proceeds to good use. We are forwarding the proceeds from our Meat Raffle along with our donation to West Volunteer Fire Department in Texas, location of the fertilizer plant explosion that took the lives of eleven First Responders & Firefighters. F.C.V. Volunteer Fire Department provides primary fire protection for Franklin Township, Conesville Village & Virginia Township in Coshocton County. RayWorthington740-829-2274

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Farmers Market opened up for its first Saturday of the season. The vendors were set up with hanging baskets, pepper and tomato plants, jellies, onions, hostas, laundry soaps and more. Have you tried Krista Seibert’s laundry detergent? It comes in a variety of scents and also unscented. Lisa Cutshall is planning to bring individual slices of pie (and plastic forks) for those of us that shouldn’t devour the 8 inch pecan pie alone. Steve and Julie Troendly have beautiful flowering plants and succulent mini gardens. I can picture little fairy gardens in those hens and chicks. The Praters will be there with their green house plants and beautiful variety for your gardens. Cassie Seigrist has a huge selection of hanging baskets perfect for moms. Dick Mullet has the buzz on what’s what in the honey department. Who knew there were so many varieties? Windy Hills Berry Farm has fresh brown eggs in their stand at our market. Delicious is all we can say about them. Penny Carroll has truck loads (literally) of perennials. Elenor brings breads and baked goods. Johnathan Snyder from Our Farm always has a wonderful assortment of veggies and is a joy to talk to each week. The Pickleman was there with his jellies and goodies. Gary Kilpatrick sold out of his rhubarb and onions in a matter of fewer than two hours last Saturday. As the season progresses, our number of vendors will continue to grow!

Tim Thomas sang three selections during Warsaw’s National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 2. BEACON PHO-

TO BY BETH SCOTT specific areas, including the village of Warsaw, the state of Ohio, and the nation. Tim Thomas provided inspirational music. “The important thing is the Lord in our nation, the Lord in our people, and the Lord in our hearts,” said John Rahter, pastor at Warsaw United Methodist Church. Rahter prayed for the village of Warsaw and Charles Warren, pastor at Tyndall United Methodist Church, prayed for Coshocton County. “I feel it’s a great privilege that I live in this county,” said Warren. “It’s so wonderful to know that God created this county for all of us.” Richard King, pastor at the Nazarene Church, prayed for the State of Ohio, and Philip Hunt, pastor at Central Christian Church, prayed for the federal government. All members of past and present armed forces were prayed for by Jeremy Roseberry, pastor of Canal Lewisville and Park United Methodist Church, and Sharon Kirch of God’s Eternal Love Fellowship, prayed for our schools. “There’s nothing more important than our children,” she said. “They may rebel. All

children rebel, but they hold on to the seeds instilled in them by their parents.” John Kirch of God’s Eternal Love Fellowship prayed for the emergency and law forces in the county. Tim Thomas ended the event with a song. “Each of you has a job today,” said Thomas. “You’re going to run into someone today who doesn’t know Jesus, someone who needs prayer, and I’m going to ask that you become the difference in someone’s life today.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

1963

May 9th, 1963 The Coshocton Stadium committee had banded together to aid the high school in raising funds for new football bleachers that they hoped to have completed by the first football game on Sept. 6. Reasons for the new bleachers included having too many repair bills on the current bleachers with more than $400 in 1962 alone, and safety issues. Roy McKinley, superintendent of the city schools, reported that some bleachers in Ohio had collapsed last year and he wanted to avoid that happening in Coshocton. He also stated that community pride and poor visibility were secondary reasons for new bleachers.

COSHOCTON – More than 30 residents of Coshocton County had a unique and unforgettable experience last Saturday night during the Pomerene Center for the Arts’ Gala Dinner, which was featured as part of the Dogwood Festival. The dinner followed four original murals in the city of Coshocton and participants learned the history of each mural and the artist. The first mural was located at Chase Bank on 4th Street in Coshocton. This mural, entitled, ‘Canal Days’ was painted by the late Dean Cornwell and was unveiled at Coshocton National Bank on May 14, 1960. It was moved to its current located in the late 60s. This was Cornwell’s last work of his life. When asked what he thought was unique about the mural, area Chase bank manager, Todd Brown, said, “I think the vibrant colors, and we’re really pleased that it’s a connection with the bank and the community.” “There are still people who come in who make a connection with the painting,” added Patrick Carroll, relationship banker. A variety of prepared vegetables were served by Bob McKenna of Medbery Marketplace at the Chase Bank location. The mural celebrating the 200th anniversary of Col. Bouquet and his troops coming from Pennsylvania to sign a peace treaty with the Delaware Natives was the next mural viewed and discussed, which is currently located at Central Elementary. This painting, completed in 1964, was originally commissioned by the 1964 Coshocton High School graduating class to Benton Clark. Clark unfortunately died before he could start on this mural, but his friend, Benjamin Blackson took over and completed the job. Blackson’s brother, Lewis ‘Pooch’ Blackson, was present to speak about the mural. “I would come over and watch him paint this mural,” Blackson said. “I was amazed that he could do that.” Chris Thomas from the SportZone catered the Central Elementary site, serving prime rib

BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, and potato gratin. Col. Bouquet’s treaty with the Delaware Natives is also depicted in Arthur Willliam Woelfle’s famous mural which has been hanging at the Coshocton County Courthouse since 1908. This 30-foot long, 5-foot high mural was originally painted on canvas and then glued to the wall inside the courthouse behind the judge’s bench. In 1963, Benton Clark restored Woelfle’s painting. “This is, I think, the most breathtaking mural you will find in Coshocton County,” said Irene Miller of the courthouse. Bruce Kotab of Oscar Rose catered at the courthouse location, serving grits and shrimp. The last painting of the evening, located at Edie Ryan’s, depicts a panoramic view of Roscoe Village created by George Young in 1978. This 5 by 16 foot mural was started by Young in 1974 when Edie Ryan waitressed at the restaurant. ` “It was really interesting to watch him because you’d come in every day and it would look different,” said Ryan. “He was a good worker. He was really dedicated to it.” Edie Ryan’s served pie and coffee to end the event. Johnny Dotson and his crew provided musical entertainment at each location, having to tear down and move all of their instruments and equipment to and from each location. Dotson played a wide variety of music throughout the evening.

The Gala Dinner was a fundraiser to bring a conservation painter to Coshocton from Cleveland to help restore the murals in the county so that the history they represent can be preserved and appreciated for generations to come. Ohio United Way’s Board Chair, Attorney Clair Dickinson, said, “Ohio United Way is thrilled to be using the occasion of its anniversary to honor people who have made its work possible: individuals from across Ohio who have given selflessly to make a positive difference in their communities.” Locally, United Way of Coshocton nominated both Rev. Bob Millspaugh and RockTenn because of their tremendous show of support for the United Way here in Coshocton. Steve Miller, United Way Treasurer, Rev. Bob Millspaugh, Winnie Ellis, United Way board member and RockTenn employee and Gwen Miller of RockTenn all attended the luncheon. When Rev. Bob moved into Coshocton, he immediately became involved with the United Way in a leadership capacity. For the past 30 plus years, he has served in many ways including President for many years. been a loyal supporter always giving generously. Rev. Bob has also been willing to be a voice for the United Way on the radio or in the media. He believes passionately in the power of the multiplied dollar and has high expectations for his fellow givers. Rev. Bob inspires all of us to give from the heart as he leads by example. Industries in Coshocton Ohio have taken a large hit by the economy and employers are hard pressed to maintain their employees, but RockTenn has continued to stay deeply immersed and supportive of Coshocton. Since 1863, they have had a presence in Coshocton, gainfully employing thousands of Coshoctonians over the years. As avid United Way supporters, over the last 20 years, RockTenn employees and corporate gifts amount to almost a million dollars, with 10 out of the last 11 years having been our top giver. RockTenn’s support has been the rock for Coshocton and the United Way!

President Emily McBurney surprised Tomma Bordenkircher by honoring her for being a STAR of BPW for making a difference in the political arena. She has served on the Region and State levels as Legislative Chair. Equal Pay is the issue that means the most to Bordenkircher. Since 1995, she has worked to bring attention to Equal Pay Day every April with bake sales, displays, mayor proclamations, letters to the editor, dinners with keynote speakers, and talk show appearances. The biggest impact of a politically-active program that she has been involved with is the organization of Meet the Candidates Night which BPW co-sponsors with the Coshocton County Farm Bureau. WTNS radio carries the program live in the evening, records it and plays it again the next day on the talk show. The candidates appreciate how well organized the night was, and the public appreciates the valuable information. Center committed to providing prenatal and well child care

BY JOSIE SELLERS

“We are very personable and have played with a lot of kids while parents were here to take care of another child,” Rohr said. The staff, which also includes Sara King, nurse practitioner – child health; Tammy Smith, child health registered nurse; Darcy Brickles, billing clerk; and Erma Downer, clerk, especially likes it when moms continue to bring their children back for services. “We have a good connection with our moms and like to watch their children grow,” Rohr said. The center is funded by United Way, the Ohio Department of Health, Medicaid and through grants as they become available. “We try to keep our costs to patients as low as possible,” Rohr said. Some funds also are received from patients who pay out of their own pockets. Those charges come from a sliding fee scale based on family size and income. “Don’t let finances stop you from coming in,” Rohr said. “We are here to offer a service to the community in what we believe is a friendly environment.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – The Maternal & Child Health Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive prenatal care and well child exams. “We are here to help those who are self paid, uninsured or even underinsured no matter what walk of life you come from,” said Leane Rohr, project director at the center. Mothers to be who come to the clinic receive care from Dr. Paul Prior and Cindy Abood, a registered nurse with more than 40 years of prenatal experience. “You get the same care you would in an OBGYN office, but we also provide social support,” Rohr said. “We can help connect patients to social services and are here to listen to those who just want someone to talk to. We try to be real good at supporting our moms. A lot of them have needs and we work with them to meet those needs.”

The center also offers pregnancy tests, education and nutrition information as needed and will do postpartum checks. However, they do not provide ongoing gynolocical services. “We can help our prenatal moms with their first prescription of birth control, but then we have to refer them to other places for help because we only do pregnancy related services,” Rohr said. The center also offers well child exams to children two weeks of age to 12-years-old, does preschool and daycare physicals, immunizations from birth to age 18, vision, hearing and developmental screenings and led poisoning and iron screenings. However, services to children who are sick and simply not feeling well are not available. “If we see any issues we can refer children and moms to be receiving prenatal care to places to get further treatment,” Rohr said. She also stressed the importance of getting your children vaccinated. “The few minutes of pain they experience from a shot is much less than the pain a disease (from not getting a vaccination) could cause,” Rohr said. “Not getting a vaccine could cause a child to have permanent issues or even die.” She also noted that the center’s staff does its best to make the vaccination process as easy as possible on everyone.

The program has served over 8,000 children from low-income families with health, nutrition, cognitive, social and emotional development during the important first five years of life. Now they’re planning to make important changes to their Hilltop Facility on County Road 16 and are inviting the public to the official kick-off of this important fundraising campaign. The Hilltop Transformation Committee is having a fundraising kick-off on Thursday, May 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds Commercial Building in Coshocton. The event will showcase the proud history of Head Start in this community and will outline the proposed designs for the Hilltop Facility that will transform the classrooms from the building’s past use as a nursing home to purpose-designed classrooms created to enhance learning. The county’s Head Start program’s federal funding only extends to programs and does not cover the cost of the building that houses those programs. COOPERDALE – Richard and Mildred Wright of the Cooperdale area celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 14 with a family dinner at Hyde Park Prime Steak House in Columbus. The celebration was organized and hosted by the couple’s children. Richard and WRIGHT Mildred were married on April 25 in the Cooperdale Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. deliver,” McKeown said. “It just depends on how many patients we have. We don’t just see laboring patients. We also see those with postpartum and pregnancy complications.” A surgery room for c-sections also is on the floor and an epidural is available for moms who want it. Once babies are born they are kept safe with the help of a security system. “The baby gets a radio transmitter band on its ankle that remain there until dismissal,” McKeown said. “If our alarm gets set off the unit locks down, but we’ve never had an issue.” Four ids also are made after the baby is born. “Mom gets one, the significant other gets one and baby gets two,” McKeown said. “The baby also is always with a staff member or in the room with the mom.” While in the hospital, moms also have the opportunity to speak with Jenny Philabaum, a breast feeding consultant, learn some baby care tips from the staff and watch videos on several important topics related to their child. “We think staying local is important because we have excellent physicians and staff here that are qualified to take care of patients,” McKeown said. The hospital also treats the new parents to a special stork meal or a basket of goodies, such as fruits, cookies and candies if the mom isn’t up

COSHOCTON - The birthing centre at Coshocton Memorial Hospital can be a pretty busy place. “We are not a unit with just one thing happening,” said Beth McKeown, RNC OB, head nurse in the newborn nursery. “We have patients here for pre-delivery, delivery, post delivery and the infants to care for. There can be a lot going on.” Most of the time it’s also a happy place to be. “It’s not a sick environment,” said McKeown. “We want to make moms feel comfortable both physically and emotionally.” The hospital also features a family centered atmosphere. “A lot of hospitals are going stricter, but here it’s not uncommon to see both sets of grandparents, the dad and a child or two,” said Mary Ellen Given, marketing coordinator at the hospital. However, the number of people in the room is restricted once the pushing starts. “Prior to the pushing we don’t have huge visitor restrictions,” McKeown said. “We also encourage the support person to stay in the room with our moms.” The floor features four labor and delivery rooms and six other private rooms. “We don’t always move you after you

WARSAW - The River View music department presented their annual performance on Friday and Saturday evening, May 3 and 4 at the high school. This year’s performance was “Guys and Dolls”, based on a story and characters of Damon Runyon. Directed by Deborah English, the annual River View musical is always something that goes above and beyond with hours upon hours of set building, rehearsals and costumes that look like they just walked off 1940’s Broadway onto the stage at River View. And although this writer was not able to see the entire performance, those that attended surely walked away feeling a bit lighter in their step. Lead characters were Zach Pessia, Sam Hart, Rachel Duncan and Kassidy Meek. All four, along with the entire cast and crew deserve to be complimented on a terrific presentation of the 1940’s based classic. With scenery from New York City and Havana, Cuba, singing scenes were spot on delightful and the co-stars,

indeed everyone involved, deserve to be proud of their efforts. Costars were Alexis Speicher, Seth Kittner, Chase Warren, Ross Anglin, Dakota Kiger, Sarah Kittner, Brandon Ferdman and Clay Mercer. Another classic that shows our young people across this community are indeed doing good things. For more photos visit our website and photo gallery at www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com. Pictured are Zach Pessia (Sky Masterson) and Rachel Duncan (Sarah Brown) in Act I, scene 9, of the RV musical “Guys and Dolls”. This scene was set in Havana, Cuba. Masterson had a wager with Samuel Hart (Nathan Detroit) that he could not woo the leader of Save a Soul Mission (Brown) to his favorite restaurant, which just happened to be in Cuba. In an appropriate twist of fate, Brown (Duncan) had a few too many beverages that Masterson (Pessia) assured her were heavy on milk. That’s just all there is to it.” Dave Lapp, Stephanie’s father, said, “The community has been unreal with the support. I never dreamed there would be anything like this, it’s just great, just great, and I love living here. I guess that really reflects on Pat and Stephanie, what kind of people they are, what kind of teacher she is, and especially what kind of kids we have here at River View. COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce announces their upcoming Coshocton Cash Mob. The Cash Mob will be on Monday, May 13 at Kiefer’s Florist located in historic Roscoe Village. The Cash Mob will meet at 5 p.m. outside the store. Come visit the new Commonwealth Americana shop located within the store. Commonwealth Americana sells distinctive Coshocton-made products in Roscoe Village and was recently founded by Edward Kiefer and Robert Colby, PhD. According to Amy Stockdale, Executive Director of the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, cash mobs encourage members of a community to make a change and help support a local business. Mobbers typically spend $10-20 at the business being mobbed, which creates an immediate economic stimulus. The term ‘cash mob’ comes from the same concept of a ‘flash mob’. Just as flash mobs call together a group of people to meet for a short period of time, so

do cash mobs. A cash mob is a new trend in which people use social media to plan organized events, providing a way to join together and support local businesses. “Not only are cash mobs helping local businesses achieve financial success, they are creating everlasting customers and uniting people of the community,” said Stockdale. “Our local businesses are so important to our community and this is an easy way to get involved to shop locally. Anyone is invited to attend by showing up at the Kiefer’s Florist on Monday at 5 p.m. We encourage everyone to participate in this grass root event.” For more information and to keep updated on future Cash Mob locations, ‘Like’ Coshocton Cash Mob on Facebook or call the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce at 622-5411.

COSHOCTON - County Auditor Christine Sycks is warning property owners to beware of companies offering to assist with obtaining deeds and other public records for a fee. Property Transfer Services of Wilmington, Delaware has mailed letters to area residents saying they are recommending property owners obtain a copy of their ‘Grant Deed’ and complete ‘Property Profile’. “The mailer is a little misleading, because it appears to be a bill with a due date, even though they specifically state “this is not a bill” in smaller print. It also appears they may be targeting parcels under the Homestead Reduction that have recently been transferred,” said Sycks. Similar mailings have been reported in other counties. For a charge of around $80 or $90, the mailings offer to provide copies of the deed and property record information that can be acquired at little or no charge from the County Recorder’s and Auditor’s Offices. “The only thing listed in the mailing that is not normally included in the deed or property record card are “comparable values” of the property address,” Sycks said. “Most people don’t need that unless they are planning on appealing their taxable value. However, owners can do the research on their own from sales records on file in my office for no charge, if needed. Taxpayers can also either contact a realtor who is active in their area for an independent opinion of their value or they can also review recent sales of comparable properties on our website www.coshcoauditor.org.” The County Auditor’s Office can be reached at 622-1243 and the County Recorder’s number is 622-2817. Or email Susan Turner, county recorder at susanturner@coshoctoncounty.net.

He was also a member of the Finance Committee, the State and Local Government Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee, the Highways and Transportation Committee, the Health and Human Services and Aging Committee. Prior to that he served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served as speaker pro tempore two terms. Cates started his

political career as a township trustee, serving as both president and vice president in the 1990s. Cates holds a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a master’s from the University of Dayton. SPECIAL PURPOSE ATV

Lucas McCoy is pictured on his new special purpose ATV that he will use for his favorite pursuit, hunting. McCoy was injured in an accident last year and a recently held benefit provided the funds to get an ATV for hunting. Joanne Nys said, “He was so excited and couldn’t believe he was able to actually get it after dreaming about having one all of this time. We always made sure he got everything he needed, but we thought he deserved a “want” for a change. I think we were as excited as him though, honestly. He someday thinks he might want to be a sales rep for this chair company.”
