Coshocton Relay For Life exceeds goal! The 14th annual Coshocton County Relay for Life is now in the history books and the final tally exceeded the goal of $125,000 by over $8,000, coming in at $133,729.72. This achievement was accomplished by 52 participating teams and a record number (17) of new teams participating in this year’s Relay. This year’s Relay also had five platinum teams (those teams raising over $10,000) – number one team, Grace United Methodist Church with $12,000 raised, Team Annin, River View Bears, Keene United Methodist Church and Miracles Around The Corner raise over $50,000 of the total monies. The funds raised will help fund local cancer research and resources, according to Tim Callahan, with the American Cancer Society Zanesville office. Co-chair Kim Gress said, “I continue to be amazed about how our community can out do itself year after year! I can’t think of another community where I would want to live. Coshocton County people ROCK! When people care this much . . . the rest is easy. Thanks Coshocton!” With gorgeous start weather wise on Friday evening, cancer survivors, caregivers and team members gathered at the fairgrounds to either observe or join in the survivor lap, caregiver lap and team processional. Many emotional moments were shared as cochair Bob Nicholson asked for those that had been diagnosed with cancer since last year’s Relay to cut the ribbon officially opening the 14th annual event. With over 1,000 team members, 500 survivors and many others in attendance, County Commissioner Dane Shryock read a proclamation from the Board of Commissioners. Girl Scout senior cadet troops 667, 669 and 318 gave the pledge of allegiance and a combined high school chorus under the direction of Dawn Anglin sang the opening song penned by Sheldon Mencer. Tim Callahan told the crowd, “Don’t ever give up!” Mary Mason, honorary chair, told everyone that, “I did not have cancer at this time last year”. Mason said, “Smile and giggle every day. I celebrate life every single day. I have – and urge you to – put color into your life. Do things that are going to make you feel good. We’d love to find that cure for cancer. We’ll continue to work and smile and giggle”. Beverly Wright, who joined in the survivor lap for the first time and has been a survivor since August, 1990, said, “They gave me five months to live and here I am. I think the Relay is wonderful”. Alyssa Cushman, a member of the Remember Alana Team, and one of Alana Branstetter’s best friends, said, “It’s really nice to come out here and see a lot of younger people. I think Alana opened up our eyes to the impact of cancer. Until Alana, I had not
been to the Relay – and I didn’t know the community support it had. It’s just really cool to see all the younger people here. Alana touched a lot of lives – she was really outgoing – everyone wants to be a part of this”. Alana’s sister, Amber Branstetter, said, “Alana didn’t die in vain. She died to bring us all together. It makes us appreciate each other more and learn to be healthy”. “Team Teresa”, was at the Relay in support of Mrs. Teresa Lucas, wife of former Coshocton City Schools superintendent Wade Lucas. Team members Patti Mercer, Delia Meek and Sarah Meek said of their first year being at the Relay, “It’s awesome!” The Relay continued with the luminary ceremony at 9:00 p.m., a time of reflection and time to honor survivors and remember those that have passed on from cancer. Many area musicians and performers gave of their time and talent to entertain – all at no charge – to the Relay. And with 24 hour guy Dave Lear manning the sound – everyone was always aware of what was happening at Relay. Several events are held during the night for teams to earn points. Saturday morning brings a fresh round of energy and enthusiasm for the always popular Miss Relay contest. Emcee Larry Pepper, in his usual great form, provided entertainment along with the contestants – and we must say that this year’s batch of entries were beyond comparison. Compared to what, we’re not sure! In a moment to reflect on our country an Armed Forces, dignitaries, elected officials and first responder’s ceremony at noon was led off by an honor guard. Later in the afternoon, Terry Longsworth provided his auctioneering skills to the cake, quilt and craft auction – an event that grows in popularity each year. As the Relay started to wind down and teams started dismantling their campsites, we caught up with Melanie Kunze and Wendy Croy from the River View team. Kunze said that, “We lost Judy Dolick and Mary Mattison to cancer this past year. This is our fourth year having a team and our first
year we raised $2600. This year we will be a platinum team. We got two of our elementary schools involved – Warsaw and Conesville – and hope to get everyone involved next year. We used spirit weeks, staff donations, bake sales, daffodils and the luminary to raise the money”. Wendy Croy said, “One of our fourth grade students lost their mom – and we all know someone who has suffered – and when we lost Mary and Judy last year – it really hit home”. A sudden downpour during the closing ceremony did not dampen the enthusiasm of the co-chairs, team captains, team members or those that joined in the closing lap. Members of the Sheriff’s office team endured the soaking rains to finish what they had started a mere 24 hours earlier. The 2009 Coshocton County Relay for Life is truly a tribute to all those in our community who gave of themselves so that a cure may be found. The inspiration and encouragement from everyone that contributed, participated and worked long hours baking or making set another wonderful example of what makes our community a great place to live, work and play. And it is justly fitting that our community exceeded the goal in the current economic climate with a theme of Hope! Celebrate! and Fight Back! For that is exactly what we are doing each and every day here in Coshocton County.

River View High School Teachers Recognized Two junior members of the River View student council recently took the initiative to organize a recognition ceremony in the Luther Stover gymnasium for the faculty. Event organizers Duane Stutzman and Jessica Paynter said, “Our teachers don’t get appreciated enough – our teachers put in a lot of extra hours that they don’t get paid for. That was our reason for doing this. With chairs arranged in the form of the letters “R” and “V”, Paynter and Stutzman presented faculty members with certificates and flowers. Superintendent Kyle Kanuckel said, “It means a lot to the staff that the kids took the time to recognize them – it makes the teachers feel very special”. Stutzman and Paynter both reported following the assembly that, “That was awesome! It was an amazing feeling to do something great for our teachers”.

In a true display of leadership qualities and a positive reflection on our community, the Coshocton County Leadership Class of 2009 presented a check in the amount of $3500 during their graduation ceremonies to Nate McNeal, coordinator at the school. Kathleen Thompson, Executive Director of The Coshocton Foundation, a primary sponsor of the program, told the class that, “You have accomplished something very important. the evening, “This (the alternative school) is the last stop . . . but not the last chance for these kids. To raise funds the class held a spaghetti dinner at New Bethel Ministries along with a hog raffle. The class also made donations each month to the cause. The class was also grateful to the Jason Pendola band for performing at the event. A grateful and emotional McNeal humbly accepted the donation – tell-

McNeal continued, “What an amazing thing these people have done for these kids, we have great kids – they really deserve it – it’s a joy and privilege to work with them every day.
