areas of Coshocton’s development. Nine regions of cultural identity are presented: agriculture, surveying, industry, civic buildings and banking, utilities/infrastructure, education, influential people, media, and the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, an 80-year old cultural institution. The artifacts are diverse, from an 1827 Ledger of the McClain & Frew Store, now the Warehouse Restaurant, to surveying tools and drawings by Ross Hamilton, early 20th C. Coshocton surveyor. Visitors will be surprised by the number of newspapers that have come and gone, such as the Coshocton Daily Times and the Times-Age. Even a German-language paper, Coshocton Wochenblatt, is displayed. A 1931 edition of the Coshocton Tribune is also available for visitors to leaf through. JHM’s Coshocton Bicentennial exhibit will be displayed in the Golden Gallery through December. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum’s fall exhibit, Inspired by Coshocton—Artwork by Artists with Ties to Coshocton County, features works of any media by people with a connection to Coshocton. Artists are invited to submit an application to the show. Deadline is Sept. 1. The subject matter does not have to relate directly to Coshocton. This contemporary exhibit is another way to celebrate the Coshocton community as its members continue to create and express themselves. Bicentennial Lunchtime Chats: Wednesdays starting June 8 and running through July: The public is invited to meet in the Montgomery Gallery at Noon for an hour of reminiscing and conversing about people and events from Coshocton’s past 100 years. Participants are encouraged to share their stories or just engage as a listener. Storytelling is no lost art around this county, so it’s sure to be an entertaining time. JHM staff will facilitate the conversation. A craft time from 12:30 – 1 p.m. will be available for children who are attending the Lunchtime Chats with their parents. This will be in the adjacent gallery so that parents may continue to be a part of the discussion while their children play. simple City ward structure
letter to tHe editor
By steVe merCer mayor of tHe City of CosHoCton
This year, the city of Coshocton is participating in the America in Bloom beautification competition, and as a fun way to encourage resident participation, the city is having a challenge between “WARDS” for “Best Ward”. So what is a ward and what is that about? Wards are set up in cities as a means to represent the people in government. Different-sized cities can be divided up into multiple wards. We in Coshocton are divided into quarters, first through fourth Wards. Our city council has an elected official for each ward as chosen by those in that ward, and then three atlarge councilpersons that represent the whole city for a total of seven. The mayor and president of council
represent the whole city as well. The primary factor to create the divisions is to use the U.S. Census taken every 10 years and then establish boundaries in four equal parts. The census taken in 2010 shows a city population of 11,216. Using the census, instead of voting records or geographical size, means that some wards are much smaller in territory than others, but the quantity of residents are about the same. It’s now time for the 10 year review and reapportionment. I hope this gives you a simple understanding of the Ward System but even more so, incentive to take pride in your ward and participate in making our city the best and most beautiful in the competition. Mayor Steve Mercer

Answer: This is a great question. I have been an Ohio licensed funeral director for 15 years and only once have I buried a deceased person on their own property. So the answer is yes, however that are some issues to consider. Some cities and townships have ordinances against doing this, but some don’t. It takes a little bit of research to find out if it’s possible or not. However, I do discourage families of this. The chances of your own property remaining in your family’s name forever are slim at best, that’s why we have cemeteries. Cemeteries are dedicated places to place our deceased loved ones, forever, as long as forever is. I feel it’s important to have a designated place for our deceased loved ones, so the living have a place to go, remember, reflect, lay some flowers, say a prayer for those that have gone on before us. As I always say, it’s always best to set up your arrangements ahead of time. It doesn’t cost anything to come in and talk with myself or Jim Lapp to get your wishes down on paper. Please contact us at The Miller Funeral Home, 622-8000 to make an appointment.
First flag raised at waggoner Cemetery The friends of Waggoner Cemetery hosted its annual Memorial Services Saturday, May 21 in the cemetery, located at Oxford Township Road 474, West Lafayette. State Representative Troy Balderson gave the keynote speech. Deacon Andy Duda of Sacred Heart served as Clergy, and the Coshocton County Honor Guard performed the gun salute and taps. Approximately 45 were in attendance for the services, which also included a speech by Michelle A. Carpenter of the Friends Board of Directors. She explained the Friends group began in February 1992 and have done many projects in the cemetery. Two special projects were done this year for the 200th anniversary of the cemetery’s first burial, Philip Waggoner. The group purchased flowers for the over 300 at rest there, including one World War II and eight Civil War veterans. Also, Mark Fletcher of Dallas, TX assisted Carpenter in the raising of the first ever Waggoner cemetery flag. The flag was designed by Carpenter with advice from the late Vane S. Scott Jr. of Newcomerstown and assistance from Rick Merrell of Annin and Co., Coshocton, also the flag’s manufacturers. The service concluded with the annual covered dish luncheon, business meeting, and fellowship at the River Greens Golf Course Banquet Room.

Well, sort of. As Brotherhood of the Brush organizer Malcolm Shaw read the summons with an entirely straight face (not to be confused with a straight razor) Paul Golden stood with a bemused look on his face. Until, that is, he was placed in the “stocks” at the Coshocton County Courtsquare for “public observation and ridicule” not to say anything about the substantial cash penalty paid for restitution of his grievous actions. The action, according to the summons, is a “failure to sprout and cultivate facial hair

thought, “Oh, wow, we have a lot of work”, but God came through with the many hours of people giving of their time, talent and treasures. It’s just so wonderful to be a part of it. “The community has been supportive in so many ways. I won’t know this side of heaven how many volunteer hours and effort and sweat has went into it. It’s incredible and a fun, fun day.” Dr. Kevin Doherty, said about the day, “It’s just a wonderful event. It’s just such a privilege to be a part and see how this community came together and the way God raised up individuals. We had no idea that would allow something like this to take place. To give back to the community, I just feel fortunate. When asked about the renovation of the former dry cleaners into the various spaces and examination rooms that now house the Hope Clinic, Dr. Doherty said, “The transformation has been very moving for the Callahan family, and I’m sure the people that come here will feel similar. Kent and I saw this building when it was abandoned and never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be this fast. I thought it would be years. All the volunteer hours, the money, the time, talent and treasures that people put into this, what a testament to this community. They should be extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished. It’s truly a community effort.” Jeanne Davis Callahan, who donated the building to the Hope Clinic, said, “Several years ago when it became vacant, and my son became ill, we decided to close it (Davis Dry Cleaners) down. I thought there must be a good purpose for it. I listed it with a Realtor, they brought me back an offer and I kept thinking, I had this nagging feeling, so I called around to see if anyone needed it. I thought it might become a church; I had it earmarked for a church, then Rick (Merrell) called me one afternoon and asked if I would consider selling the building. I asked, “What is this for?” He said, “It’s for Hope Clinic”, and I said, “If it’s for Hope Clinic, it’s a deal. But I’m not going to sell it, it’s theirs. “It makes me feel that there has been a miracle wrought by a lot of wonderful people

Volunteers, board members, representatives of the Callahan family and community supporters applauded as the red ribbon was cut marking the official opening of the Hope Clinic at its new location; 131 South Sixth Street in Coshocton, this past Saturday. Dr. Kent Doherty, who along with his brother Dr. Kevin Doherty, had the vision to establish a clinic in Coshocton, said, “This is wonderful. It’s the culmination of hours and hours of dreaming on not just my part, but Kevin’s part, and all the people here. We are just so thrilled to be a small part of it. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to help. The vision for the Hope Clinic is to use medicine as a vehicle to share the hope we have in Jesus and that’s it. We hope to give good medical care to people who are in between medical insurances so there is a place for them to come and get good care, pray with someone if they want to, and just be loved. “It’s a miracle how the dry cleaners had a fire in it, I looked in it in the beginning and

who walked in here cold and they saw what had to be done, they set about it and they did it. They are the ones who created the miracle. It’s been a miracle, simple as that.” Following a prayer of dedication by Pastor Mark Granger, comments from board President Maureen Karl, board Vice President Rick Merrell, and Dr.’s Kevin and Kent Doherty, Coshocton City Mayor Steve Mercer read a proclamation. Granger prayed, “Father, we just thank you today for people with vision that could see beyond themselves that God has a vision to help others . . .Father, thank you most of all for making a way where there sometimes seemed to be no way.” A plaque on the outside wall of the building reads, “In memory of Shawn Callahan”. In a fitting tribute, the building is dedicated to the daughter of Jeanne Davis Callahan. Callahan’s grandson, Patrick Unger, Shawn’s son, said about the plaque and the day itself, “It’s just an awesome feeling. So much has been done to this building. It’s amazing. I’m glad that everyone got together to make this happen.” Board President Maureen Karl, said, “This is overwhelming. This is a culmination of everyone’s hopes and dreams that have come true. We couldn’t thank our volunteers enough who have come and joined us today and made this dream a reality. We have been truly blessed.” Sharon Doherty, mother of Dr. Kent and Dr. Kevin Doherty, said about the day, “Today my feeling in my heart is that God is working a wonder. He’s gathering his people together. The boys’ whole goal was to bring Christ to people through medicine. I’m so proud of them because they’re so sincere. I feel blessed to be their mother. I thank God for it.” The Hope Clinic is located at 131 South Sixth Street in Coshocton. Registration begins each Thursday at 5 p.m. with patients being seen at 6 p.m.

June 11th, 1961 Horses at the Coshocton County Fair would soon have a new place to call their own. A new horse barn was being constructed in the southeast corner of the fairgrounds. Plans called for a 112 by 40 foot concrete block building to provide space for 22 horse stalls. Completion date for the project was set for Sept. 15, but the building was expected to be done much sooner. The need for more space for the horses during the fair prompted the fair board to make the necessary improvement. The new barn would be used for race horses.

June 9th, 1971 Jeff Corder and Terry Holsclow of Coshocton County became good friends when riding the bus together. But their friendship was strengthened when Jeff, 15, saved Terry’s life. Terry, 13, and his three sisters were playing on a raft built of oil drums and planks when Terry lost his balance and fell in. Luckily, Jeff was nearby riding on horseback when he saw Terry fall in. Jeff jumped off his horse and kicked off his shoes when he saw Terry struggling in the water. He swam 10 yards and pulled Terry to safety. When asked if he could swim, Terry said, “Nope.” When asked if he was glad to see Jeff, Terry replied, “Yep.”

June 13th, 1981 Drinking milk is good for you. That’s what Dairy Princess Jamie Cunningham and her attendant Teresa Hostetler tried to portray to the public as they passed out free milk and recipes for homemade ice cream at a local grocery store. They reminded everyone that the dairy industry was very important to Coshocton County, but milk sales had been dropping in the county, according to the Ohio Crop Reporting Service. The figures had dropped from 48.4 million pounds of milk sold in the county to 45.7 million. Princess Jamie and her attendant hoped to increase that number.

Fresno Farmer’s Market has a new place to call home. Previously located at the Fresno Elementary School, the Farmer’s Market has moved to downtown Fresno not far from Mark McCoy Auto. “I’m hoping we’ll grow and flourish and I think we will there,” said Julia Brown, founder of the Fresno Farmer’s Market, “Mark McCoy has been absolutely wonderful in letting us use his property.” Vendors from all over Coshocton County have been selling their wares at the Fresno Farmer’s Market for the past three years, now beginning their fourth year. Everything they sell has been handmade or hand grown with pride, perseverance, and a lot of love. They sell everything from strawberries, rhubarb, radishes, lettuce, baked goods, eggs, bread, honey, maple syrup, crafts, rugs, lotions, jellies, flowers, herbs and much more. June 8th, 1951 Walter Ernest Sittel, 14, of Coshocton, was in for quite a trip. He would be sailing to visit relatives for the first time in Germany on June 23 with an expected return on Aug. 28. Sittel had just completed the eighth grade and would be traveling to Germany alone on the Queen Elizabeth. Walter’s aunt, a wealthy widow from New Jersey, would be paying his way. Walter was a carrier for the Ohio State Journal and loved sports. His father originally came from Germany in 1929 and was employed at the Moore Enameling and Mfg. Co. in West Lafayette.

I think everyone understands the dynamics of what goes into fund-raising and events like this, they just came and asked how they could help and it’s been fantastic. I would
each year. We’re hoping to touch lives and increase awareness, that’s our main goal.” Prizes were awarded to the top finishers in various age categories and a picnic followed the event for families affected by Williams Syndrome. uncorked now offers outdoor grilling Reservations do not need to be made for Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Everybody loves it,” said Lorrie Hardesty, owner of Uncorked, “So we’re looking forward to utilizing it a lot.” Lorrie hopes to use the grill at least four times a week. However, the Hill Street Grill is also available for private parties such as graduation parties and class reunions, as long as a reservation is made ahead of time. The Hill Street Grill is also used during Roscoe Village Festivals. The next big event they will be grilling for will be the Corvette Show on June 12. Lorrie said that Roscoe Village was more than supportive during the construction of the grill. “Roscoe and the community needed more options where to go get a good steak,” said Lorrie. She hopes that as more people come to know about the grill, that Uncorked will become the place where people gather for a good meal and good friends.

Who doesn’t love a big juicy steak cooked out on the grill? Every Friday and Saturday night from now until the end of the summer months, Uncorked Wine and Coffee Bar, located in Roscoe Village, will be having steak night featuring their new outdoor grill, constructed by Ernie Kahoun of Kahoun Construction. Unwind in a calm, relaxing atmosphere and enjoy fresh steak, a baked potato, salad, bread, and a glass of wine. These steaks are ordered fresh from a USDA processing plant and have a 0 – 1% fat content. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Uncorked at 622-3000. During steak night, customers have the chance to cook their own steaks just the way they like it. For those who just want to sit back and relax, a chef will always be available to cook your steaks for you. Uncorked is also thinking of having local celebrities come in once a month to grill. If steak’s not your thing, stop by on Thursday evenings for $2 burgers and brats, $1 beer night. Uncorked will be featuring Chef Mike Cichon every Wednesday as he cooks two different meats on the grill with the addition of two sides.
